The Future Manvantaras and the Cycle of the Kalpa

Chapter 1All chaptersChapter 3

Verse 1 (vishnu.3.2.1)

maitreya uvāca proktānyetāni bhavatā sapta manvantarāṇi vai bhaviṣyāṇyapi viprarṣa mamākhyātuṁ tvamarhasi

Maitreya said: These seven Manvantaras have been told by you. Now, O sage among Brahmins, you should tell me of the future ones as well.

Verse 2 (vishnu.3.2.2)

śrīparāśara uvāca sūryasya patnī saṁjñābhūttanayā viśvakarmaṇaḥ manuryamo yamī caiva tadapatyāni vai mune

Sri Parashara said: The wife of Surya was Sanjna, daughter of Vishvakarma; Manu, Yama, and Yami, O sage, were her children.

Verse 3 (vishnu.3.2.3)

asahantī tu sā bhartustejaśchāyāṁ yuyoja vai bhartṛśuśrūṣaṇe'raṇyaṁsvayaṁ ca tapase yayau

Unable to bear her husband's fiery radiance, she set her shadow-double, Chhaya, in her own place to serve him, while she herself went off to the forest to practise austerities.

Verse 4 (vishnu.3.2.4)

saṁjñeyamityathārkaśca chāyāyāmātmajatrayam śanaiścaraṁ manuṁ cānyaṁ tapatīṁ cāpyajājanat

Believing her to be Sanjna herself, Surya begot upon Chhaya three children -- Shanaishchara, another Manu, and Tapati.

Verse 5 (vishnu.3.2.5)

chāyāsaṁjñā dadau śāpaṁ yamāya kupitā yadā tadānyeyamasau buddhirityāsīdyamasūryayoḥ

When Chhaya-Sanjna, in anger, cursed Yama, then it was understood by both Yama and Surya that she was someone other than the true Sanjna.

Verse 6 (vishnu.3.2.6)

tato vivasvānākhyātāṁ tayaivāraṇyasaṁsthitām samādhidṛṣṭyādadṛśe tāmaśvāṁ tapasi sthitām

Then Vivasvat (Surya), through the eye of meditation, beheld that same Sanjna, dwelling in the forest in the form of a mare, absorbed in austerity.

Verse 7 (vishnu.3.2.7)

vājirūpadharaḥ sotha tasyāṁ devāvathāśvinau janayāmāsa revantaṁ retasoṁte ca bhāskaraḥ

Then, taking the form of a horse, Surya begot upon her the two divine Ashvins, and from the seed that fell upon the ground he also begot Revanta.

Verse 8 (vishnu.3.2.8)

āninye ca punaḥ saṁjñāṁ svasthānaṁ bhagavān raviḥ tejasaḥ śamanaṁ cāsya viśvakarmā cakāra ha

The illustrious Sun then brought Sanjna back to her rightful place, and Vishvakarma proceeded to temper his fiery radiance.

Verse 9 (vishnu.3.2.9)

bhramamāropya sūryaṁ tu tasya tejoniśātanam kṛtavānaṣṭamaṁ bhāgaṁ sa vyaśātayadavyayam

Placing the Sun upon a lathe, Vishvakarma pared away and shaved off an imperishable eighth portion of his radiance.

Verse 10 (vishnu.3.2.10)

yattasmādvaiṣṇavaṁ tejasśātitaṁ viśvakarmaṇā jājvalyamānamapatattadbhūmau munisattama

That Vaishnava radiance, pared away by Vishvakarma, fell blazing upon the earth, O best of sages.

Verse 11 (vishnu.3.2.11)

tvaṣṭaiva tejasā tena viṣṇoścakramakalpayat triśūlaṁ caiva śarvasya śibikāṁ dhanadasya ca

From that very radiance, Tvashtr fashioned the discus of Vishnu, the trident of Sharva (Shiva), and the palanquin of Dhanada (Kubera).

Verse 12 (vishnu.3.2.12)

śaktiṁ guhasya devānāmanyeṣāṁ ca yadāyudham tatsarvaṁ tejasā tena viśvakarmā vyavardhayat

The spear of Guha (Kartikeya), and whatever other weapons belonged to the rest of the gods -- all these Vishvakarma fashioned from that same radiance.

Verse 13 (vishnu.3.2.13)

chāyāsaṁjñāsuto yosau dvitīyaḥ kathito manuḥ pūrvajasyāsavarṇosau sāvarṇistena kathyate

That second Manu, said to be the son of Chhaya-Sanjna, being of a complexion different from the first-born, is therefore called Savarni.

Verse 14 (vishnu.3.2.14)

tasya manvantaraṁ hyotatsāvarṇikamathāṣṭamam tacchṛṇuṣva mahābhāga bhaviṣyatkathayāmi te

His Manvantara is this eighth one, the Savarnika. Hear it, O fortunate one; I shall tell you of the future Manvantaras.

Verse 16 (vishnu.3.2.16)

Of these gods, each group is remembered as numbering twenty. O best of sages, I shall also tell of the future Seven Sages.

caturyugānte vedānāṁ jāyate kila viplavaḥ pravartayanti tānetya bhuvaṁ saptarṣayo divaḥ

At the end of each set of four Yugas, indeed, a decline of the Vedas occurs; the Seven Sages then descend from heaven to earth and re-establish them.

Verse 47 (vishnu.3.2.47)

kṛtekṛte smṛtervipra praṇetā jāyate manuḥ devā yajñabhujaste tu yāvanmanvantaraṁ tu tat

At the start of each Krita Yuga, O Brahmin, it is the Manu who becomes the promulgator of the sacred law; and for as long as that Manvantara lasts, the gods are the enjoyers of the sacrifice.

Verse 48 (vishnu.3.2.48)

The Manu, the Seven Sages, the gods, the kings who are the Manu's sons, and the ruling Indra -- all these together constitute a Manvantara.

Verse 50 (vishnu.3.2.50)

caturdaśabhiretaistu gatairmanvantarairdvija sahasrayugaparyataḥ kalpo niḥśeṣa ucyate

When these fourteen Manvantaras have passed, O Brahmin, spanning a thousand divine Yugas, a kalpa is said to be complete.

Verse 51 (vishnu.3.2.51)

tāvatpramāṇā ca niśā tato bhavati sattama brahmarūpadharaḥ śete śeṣāhāvaṁbusaṁplave

Of that same duration, O most excellent one, is the night that follows; then, taking the form of Brahma, he lies asleep upon Shesha amid the flood of the deluge.

Verse 52 (vishnu.3.2.52)

trailokyamakhilaṁ grastvā bhagavānādikṛdvibhuḥ svamāyāsaṁsthito vipra sarvabhūto janārdanaḥ

Having swallowed up the entire three worlds, O Brahmin, that all-pervading Lord, the primordial creator, Janardana who is the very self of all beings, remains established within his own maya.

Verse 53 (vishnu.3.2.53)

tataḥ prabuddho bhagavān yathā pūrvaṁ tathā punaḥ sṛṣṭiṁ karotyavyayātmā kalpekalpe rajoguṇaḥ

Then, awakened, that imperishable Lord again performs creation just as before, taking on the quality of rajas, in kalpa after kalpa.

Verse 54 (vishnu.3.2.54)

manavo bhūbhujaḥseṁdrā devāḥsaptarṣayastathā sāttvikoṁśaḥ sthitikaro jagato dvijasattama

The Manus, the kings together with Indra, the gods, and the Seven Sages, O best of Brahmins, arise from his sattvic portion -- the sustainer of the world.

Verse 55 (vishnu.3.2.55)

caduryugopyasau viṣṇuḥ sthitivyāpāralakṣamaḥ yugavyavasthāṁ kurute tathā maitreya tacchṛṇu

And this Vishnu, whose function is preservation, likewise maintains the order of the Yugas across each set of four Yugas; hear that too, O Maitreya.

Verse 56 (vishnu.3.2.56)

kṛte yuge paraṁ jñānaṁ kapilādisvarūpadhṛk dadāti sarvabhūtātmā sarvabhūtahite rataḥ

In the Krita Yuga, taking the form of Kapila and others, the soul of all beings, ever devoted to the welfare of all beings, bestows supreme knowledge.

Verse 57 (vishnu.3.2.57)

cakravartisvarūpeṇa tretāyāmapi sa prabhūḥ duṣṭānāṁ nigraha kurvanparipāti jagattrayam

In the Treta Yuga too, that Lord, in the form of a universal emperor, protects the three worlds while restraining the wicked.

Verse 58 (vishnu.3.2.58)

vedamekaṁ caturbhedaṁ kṛtvā śākhāśatairvibhuḥ karoti bahulaṁ bhūyo vedavyāsasvarūpadhṛk

Taking the form of Vedavyasa, the all-pervading Lord divides the one Veda into four, and then further multiplies it into hundreds of branches.

Verse 59 (vishnu.3.2.59)

vedāṁstu dvāpare vyasya kalerante punarhariḥ kalkisvarūpī durvṛttanmārge sthāpayati prabhuḥ

Having thus divided the Vedas in the Dvapara Yuga, at the end of the Kali Yuga that same Lord Hari, taking the form of Kalki, establishes the wicked upon the right path.

Verse 60 (vishnu.3.2.60)

evametajjagatsarvaṁ śaśvatpāti karoti ca hanti cānteṣvanantātmā nāstyasmavdyatireki yat

Thus, being infinite in his own self, he eternally protects, creates, and at the end destroys this entire world; there is nothing that exists apart from him.

Verse 61 (vishnu.3.2.61)
