Amsa 4 · Chapter 6
The Line of Soma, Budha, and Pururavas
Verse 1 (vishnu.4.6.1)
maitreya uvāca | sūryasya vaṁśyā bhagavankathitā bhavatā mama | somasyāpyakhilānvaśyāñchrotumicchāmi pārthivān
Maitreya said: The lineage of the Sun, O Lord, has been told to me by you; now I wish to hear of all the kings descended from Soma, the Moon.
Verse 2 (vishnu.4.6.2)
kīrttyate sthirakīrttīnāṁ yeṣāmadyāpi saṁtatiḥ | prasādasumukhastānme brahmannākhyātumarhasi
Tell me of those of enduring fame whose descendants still exist today; be pleased, O brahmin, to relate them to me.
Verse 3 (vishnu.4.6.3)
śrīparāśara uvāca | śrūyatāṁ muniśārdūla vaṁśaḥ pratithatejasaḥ | somasyānukramātkhyātā yatrorvīpatayo'bhavan
Sri Parashara said: Hear, O tiger among sages, the lineage of renowned splendor, wherein, in due succession from Soma, kings of the earth arose.
Verse 4 (vishnu.4.6.4)
ayaṁ hi vaṁśotibalaparākramadyutiśīlaceṣṭavadbhiratiguṇānvitairnahuṣayayāti-kārtavīryārjunādibhirbhūpālairalaṁkṛtaḥ tamahaṁ kathayāmi śrūyatām
This lineage is adorned with kings of great strength, prowess, splendor, and virtuous conduct, endowed with excellent qualities — Nahusha, Yayati, Kartavirya Arjuna, and others; that lineage I now relate, hear it.
Verse 5 (vishnu.4.6.5)
akhilajagatsraṣṭurbhagavato nārāyaṇasya nābhisarojasamudbhavābjayonerbrahmaṇaḥ putro'triḥ
Atri was the son of Brahma, the lotus-born, who arose from the navel-lotus of Lord Narayana, creator of the entire universe.
Verse 6 (vishnu.4.6.6)
atressomaḥ
Atri's son was Soma, the Moon.
Verse 7 (vishnu.4.6.7)
taṁ ca bhagavānabjayoniḥ aśeṣauṣadhīdvijanakṣatrāṇāmādhipatye'bhyaṣecayat
That lotus-born Lord consecrated him to sovereignty over all herbs, brahmanas, and constellations.
Verse 8 (vishnu.4.6.8)
sa ca rājasūyamakarot
And he performed the Rajasuya sacrifice.
Verse 9 (vishnu.4.6.9)
tatprabhāvādatyutkṛṣṭādhipatyādhiṣṭhātṛtvāccainaṁ mada āviveśa
From its power, and from being installed in so exalted a sovereignty, pride overcame him.
Verse 10 (vishnu.4.6.10)
madāvalepācca sakaladevagurorbṛhaspatestārāṁ nāma patnīṁ jahāra
In the arrogance of that pride, he abducted Tara, the wife of Brihaspati, guru of all the gods.
Verse 11 (vishnu.4.6.11)
bahuśaśca bṛhaspaticoditena bhagavatā brahmaṇā codyamānasakalaiśca devarṣibhiryācamānopi na mumoca
Though repeatedly entreated by Brihaspati, urged also by Lord Brahma, and besought by all the divine sages, he still would not release her.
Verse 12 (vishnu.4.6.12)
tasya caṁdra sya ca bṛhaspaterdveṣāduśanā pārṣṇigrāhobhūt
Out of this enmity between Chandra and Brihaspati, Ushanas (Shukra) became Chandra's ally.
Verse 13 (vishnu.4.6.13)
aṁgirasaśca sakāśādupalabdhavidyo bhagavānrudro bṛhaspateḥ sahāyyamakarot
And the Lord Rudra, who had obtained learning from Angiras, gave Brihaspati his assistance.
Verse 14 (vishnu.4.6.14)
yataścośanā tato jaṁbhakuṁbhādyāḥ samastā eva daityadānavanikāyā mahāntamudyamaṁ cakruḥ
Since Ushanas sided with Chandra, all the hosts of Daityas and Danavas, headed by Jambha and Kumbha, made a great effort on his behalf.
Verse 15 (vishnu.4.6.15)
bṛhaspaterapi sakaladevasainyayutaḥ sahāyaḥ śakro'bhavat
And for Brihaspati, Indra, with the entire army of the gods, became his ally.
Verse 16 (vishnu.4.6.16)
evaṁ ca tayoratīvograsaṁgrāmastārānimittastārakāmayo nāmābhūt
Thus arose between them, on account of Tara, an exceedingly fierce war, which came to be called Tarakamaya.
Verse 17 (vishnu.4.6.17)
tataśca samastaśastrāṇyasureṣu rudra purogamā devā deveṣu cāśeṣadānavā mumucuḥ
Then the gods, led by Rudra, hurled all their weapons upon the demons, and all the Danavas hurled theirs upon the gods.
Verse 18 (vishnu.4.6.18)
evaṁ devāsurāhavasaṁkṣobhakṣubdhahṛdayamaśeṣameva jagadbrahmāṇaṁ śaraṇaṁ jagāma
Thus the entire world, its heart troubled by the turmoil of the battle between gods and demons, went for refuge to Brahma.
Verse 19 (vishnu.4.6.19)
tataśca bhagavānabjayonirapyuśanasaṁ śaṁkaramasurāndevāṁśca nivārya bṛhaspataye tārāmadāpayat
Then the lotus-born Lord, restraining Ushanas, Shankara, the demons and the gods, caused Tara to be restored to Brihaspati.
Verse 20 (vishnu.4.6.20)
tāṁ cāṁtaḥprasavāmavalokya bṛhaspatirapyāha
Seeing her pregnant, Brihaspati said —
Verse 21 (vishnu.4.6.21)
naiṣa mama kṣetre bhavatyā'nyasya suto dhāryassamutsṛjainamalamalamatidhārṣṭyeneti
'This son of another, not conceived in my field, is not to be borne by you — cast it off; enough of this impudence.'
Verse 22 (vishnu.4.6.22)
sā ca tenaivamuktātipativratā bhartṛvacanānaṁtaraṁ tamiṣīkāstaṁbe garbhamutsasarja
That most devoted wife Tara, at once upon her husband's word, cast forth the foetus into a clump of reeds.
Verse 23 (vishnu.4.6.23)
sa cotsṛṣṭamātra evātitejasā devānāṁ tejāṁsyācikṣepa
That child, the moment he was cast forth, so radiant, outshone even the splendor of the gods.
Verse 24 (vishnu.4.6.24)
bṛhaspatimiṁduṁ ca tasya kumārasyāticārutayā sābhilāṣau dṛṣṭvā devassamutpannasaṁdehāstārāṁ papracchuḥ
Seeing that boy's exceeding beauty, both Brihaspati and Chandra desired him; then the gods, in doubt, questioned Tara —
Verse 25 (vishnu.4.6.25)
satyaṁ kathayāsmākamiti subhage somasyātha vā bṛhaspaterayaṁ putra iti
'Tell us the truth, O fortunate one — is this son Soma's, or Brihaspati's?'
Verse 26 (vishnu.4.6.26)
evaṁ tairuktā sā tārā hriyā kiṁcinnovāca
Thus questioned, Tara, out of shame, said nothing.
Verse 27 (vishnu.4.6.27)
bahuśopyabhihitā yadā'sau devebhyo nācacakṣe tatassa kumārastāṁ śaptumudyataḥ prāha
When, though asked repeatedly, she still would not tell the gods, that boy, ready to curse her, said —
Verse 28 (vishnu.4.6.28)
duṣṭeṁva kasmānmama tātaṁ nākhyāsi
'O wicked one, why do you not tell me who my father is?'
Verse 29 (vishnu.4.6.29)
adyaiva te vyalīkalajjāvatyāstathā śāstimahaṁ karomi
'This very day I shall inflict such a punishment upon you, so full of false shame,'
Verse 30 (vishnu.4.6.30)
yathā ca naivamadyāpyatimaṁtharavacanābhaviṣyasīti
'that you shall never again be so slow to speak.'
Verse 31 (vishnu.4.6.31)
athāha bhagavān pitāmahaḥ taṁ kumāraṁ sannivārya svayamapṛcchattāṁ tārām
Then the Lord Grandsire, restraining that boy, himself asked Tara —
Verse 32 (vishnu.4.6.32)
kathaya vatse kasyāyamātmajaḥ somasya vā bṛhaspatervā ityuktā lajjamānāha somasyeti
'Tell me, my child, whose son is this — Soma's or Brihaspati's?' Thus asked, ashamed, she said: 'He is Soma's.'
Verse 33 (vishnu.4.6.33)
tataḥ prasphuraducchvāsitāmalakapolakāṁtirbhagavānuḍupatiḥ kumāramāliṁgya sādhu sādhu vatsa prājñosītibudha iti tasya ca nāma cakre
Then the Lord Chandra, his cheeks glowing with joyful sighs, embraced the boy and said, 'Well done, well done, my child, you are wise!' — and gave him the name Budha.
Verse 34 (vishnu.4.6.34)
tadākhyātamevaitat sa ca yathelāyāmātmajaṁ purūravasamutpādayāmāsa
This has already been told — how he begot upon Ila a son, Pururavas.
Verse 35 (vishnu.4.6.35)
purūravāstvatidānaśīlo'tiyajvātitejasvī yaṁ satyavādinamatirūpasvinaṁ manasvinaṁ mitrāvaruṇaśāpānmānuṣe loke mayā vastavyamiti kṛtamatirurvaśī dadarśa
Pururavas was exceedingly generous, a great sacrificer, and exceedingly radiant; Urvashi, who by the curse of Mitra and Varuna had resolved to dwell in the world of men, beheld him — truthful, handsome, and wise.
Verse 36 (vishnu.4.6.36)
dṛṣṭamātre ca tasminnapahāya mānamaśeṣamapāsya svargasukhābhilāṣaṁ tanmanaskā bhūtvā tamevopatasthe
The moment she saw him, casting aside all pride and her longing for heaven's joys, her mind fixed on him alone, she went and stood before him.
Verse 37 (vishnu.4.6.37)
so'pi ca tāmatiśayitasakalalokastrīkāṁtisaukumāryalāvaṇyaga-tivilāsahāsādiguṇāmavalokya tadāyattacittavṛttirbabhūva
He too, beholding her beauty, delicacy, grace, gait, playfulness and laughter, surpassing every woman in all the worlds, became one whose mind was wholly hers.
Verse 38 (vishnu.4.6.38)
ubhayamapi tanmanaskamananyadṛṣṭi parityaktasamastānyaprayojanamabhūt
Both, their minds fixed on each other alone, their gaze turned to nothing else, abandoned every other concern.
Verse 39 (vishnu.4.6.39)
rājā tu prāgalbhyāttāmāha
The king, with boldness, said to her —
Verse 40 (vishnu.4.6.40)
subhru tvāmahamabhikāmo'smi prasīdā'nurāgamudvahetyuktā lajjāvakhaṁḍitamurvaśī taṁ prāha
'O fair-browed one, I desire you — be gracious, receive my love.' Thus addressed, Urvashi, her modesty unbroken, said to him —
Verse 41 (vishnu.4.6.41)
bhavatvevaṁ yadi me samayaparipālanaṁ bhavān karotītyākhyāte punarapi tāmāha
'Let it be so, if you observe my conditions.' At this, he again asked her —
Verse 42 (vishnu.4.6.42)
ākhyāhi me samayamiti
'Tell me the conditions.'
Verse 43 (vishnu.4.6.43)
atha pṛṣṭā punarapyabravīt
Being asked again, she said —
Verse 44 (vishnu.4.6.44)
śayanasamīpe mamoraṇakadvayaṁ putrabhūtaṁ nāpaneyam
'These two lambs of mine, dear as sons, must never be removed from beside my bed.'
Verse 45 (vishnu.4.6.45)
bhavāṁśca mayā na nagno draṣṭavyaḥ
'And you must never let me see you unclothed.'
Verse 46 (vishnu.4.6.46)
ghṛtamātraṁ ca mamāhāra iti
'And clarified butter alone shall be my food.'
Verse 47 (vishnu.4.6.47)
evameveti bhūpatirapyāha
'So be it,' the king replied.
Verse 48 (vishnu.4.6.48)
tayā saha sa cāvanipatiralakayāṁ caitrarathādivaneṣvamalapadmakhaṁḍeṣu mānasādisarassvatiramaṇīyeṣu ramamāṇa ekaṣaṣṭivarṣāṇyanudinapravarddhamānapramodo'nayat
With her, that lord of the earth, sporting in Alaka, in the Chaitraratha and other forests, amid spotless lotus-groves and the delightful lakes of Manasa and the rest, spent sixty-one years with joy increasing day by day.
Verse 49 (vishnu.4.6.49)
urvaśī ca tadupabhogātpratidinapravarddhamānānurāgā amaralokavāse'pi na spṛhāṁ cakāra
And Urvashi's love, growing daily through her enjoyment of him, left her with no longing even for dwelling among the immortals.
Verse 50 (vishnu.4.6.50)
vinā corvaśyā suraloko'psarasāṁ siddhagaṁdharvāṇāṁ ca nātiramaṇīyo'bhavat
And without Urvashi, the world of the gods no longer seemed so delightful even to the apsarases, siddhas, and gandharvas.
Verse 51 (vishnu.4.6.51)
tataścorvaśī purūravasossamayavidviśvāvasurgaṁdharvasamaveto niśi śayanābhyāśādekamuraṇakaṁ jahāra
Then Vishvavasu, the gandharva who knew the terms of the pact between Pururavas and Urvashi, with other gandharvas, stole one lamb from beside her bed at night.
Verse 52 (vishnu.4.6.52)
tasyākāśe nīyamānasyorvaśī śabdamaśṛṇot
As it was carried off through the sky, Urvashi heard its cry.
Verse 53 (vishnu.4.6.53)
evamuvāca ca mamānāthāyāḥ putraḥ kenāpahriyate kaṁ śaraṇamupayāmīti
It cried out: 'The son of me, who am without protector, is being carried off by whom? To whom shall I flee?'
Verse 54 (vishnu.4.6.54)
tadākarṇya rājā māṁ nagnaṁ devī vīkṣyatīti na yayau
Hearing this, the king, thinking 'the goddess will see me unclothed,' did not go.
Verse 55 (vishnu.4.6.55)
athānyamapyuraṇakamādāya gaṁdharvā yayuḥ
Then the gandharvas took the other lamb as well.
Verse 56 (vishnu.4.6.56)
tasyāpyapahriyamāṇasyākarṇya śabdamākāśe punarapyanāthāsmyahamabhartṛkā kāpuruṣā śrayetyārttarāviṇī babhūva
Hearing that one's cry too, being carried off through the sky — 'Once more I am without protector, husbandless — what coward shall shelter me!' — she cried out in anguish.
Verse 57 (vishnu.4.6.57)
rājāpyamarṣavaśādaṁdhakārametaditi khaḍgamādāya duṣṭaduṣṭa hatosīti vyāharannabhyadhāvat
The king, overcome with indignation, thinking 'it is only darkness,' seized his sword and rushed out, crying, 'You wicked one, you wicked one, you are slain!'
Verse 58 (vishnu.4.6.58)
tāvacca gaṁdharvairapyatīvojjvalā vidyujjanitā
But at that instant the gandharvas produced an exceedingly brilliant flash of lightning.
Verse 59 (vishnu.4.6.59)
tatprabhayā corvaśī rājānamapagatāṁbaraṁ dṛṣṭvāpavṛttasamayā tatkṣaṇādevāpakrāntā
By its light, Urvashi saw the king unclothed, and, her condition broken, vanished that very instant.
Verse 60 (vishnu.4.6.60)
parityajya tāvapyuraṇakau gaṁdharvāssuralokamupagatāḥ
The gandharvas, leaving both lambs behind, returned to the world of the gods.
Verse 61 (vishnu.4.6.61)
rājāpi ca tau meṣāvādāyātihṛṣṭamanāḥ svaśayanamāyāto norvaśīṁ dadarśa
The king, taking up the two lambs, exceedingly delighted, returned to his bed, but did not find Urvashi.
Verse 62 (vishnu.4.6.62)
tāṁ cāpaśyan vyapagatāṁbara evonmattarūpo babhrāma
Not finding her, still unclothed, he wandered about like one gone mad.
Verse 63 (vishnu.4.6.63)
kurukṣetre cāṁbhojasarasyanyābhiścatasṛbhirapsarobhissamavetāmurvaśīṁ dadarśa
In Kurukshetra, by a lotus-lake, he saw Urvashi with four other apsarases.
Verse 64 (vishnu.4.6.64)
tataśconmattarūpo jāye he tiṣṭha manasi ghore tiṣṭha vacasi kapaṭike tiṣṭhetyevamanekaprakāraṁ sūktamavocat
Then, like a madman, he cried: 'O wife, stay! O hard-hearted one, stay! O deceitful-worded one, stay!' — lamenting thus in many ways.
Verse 65 (vishnu.4.6.65)
āha corvaśī
Then Urvashi said —
Verse 66 (vishnu.4.6.66)
mahārājālamanenāvivekaceṣṭitena
'O great king, what use is this senseless behavior?'
Verse 67 (vishnu.4.6.67)
aṁtarvatnyahamabdāṁte bhavatā'trāgaṁtavyaṁ kumāraste bhabiṣyati ekāṁ ca niśāmahaṁ tvayā saha vatsyāmītyuktaḥ prahṛṣṭassvapuraṁ jagāma
'I am with child; at the year's end come here, you shall have a son, and I shall spend one night with you.' Hearing this, greatly delighted, he returned to his city.
Verse 68 (vishnu.4.6.68)
tāsāṁ cāpsarasāmūrvaśī kathayāmāsa
Urvashi told those apsarases —
Verse 69 (vishnu.4.6.69)
ayaṁ sa puruṣotkṛṣṭo yenāhametāvaṁtaṁ kālamanurāgākṛṣṭamānasā sahoṣiteti
'This is that most excellent of men, with whom, my mind drawn by love, I dwelt so long.'
Verse 70 (vishnu.4.6.70)
evamuktāstāścāpsarasa ūcuḥ
Hearing this, those apsarases said —
Verse 71 (vishnu.4.6.71)
sādhusādhvasya rūpamapyanena sahāsmākamapi sarvakālamāsyā bhavediti
'Beautiful, most beautiful is his form! Would that we too might always be in his company!'
Verse 72 (vishnu.4.6.72)
abde ca pūrṇe sa rājā tatrājagāma
When the year had passed, the king came there.
Verse 73 (vishnu.4.6.73)
kumāraṁ cāyuṣamasmai corvaśī dadau
Urvashi gave him the son, Ayus.
Verse 74 (vishnu.4.6.74)
dattvā caikāṁ niśāṁ tena rājñā sahoṣitvā paṁca putrotpattaye garbhamavāpa
Having given him the child, and spending one night with the king, she conceived again, for the birth of five sons.
Verse 75 (vishnu.4.6.75)
uvāca cainaṁ rājānamasmatprītyā mahārājāya sarva eva gaṁdharvā varadāssaṁvṛttāḥ vriyatāṁ ca vara iti
She said to the king: 'Out of affection for us, O great king, all the gandharvas have become willing to grant you a boon; choose one.'
Verse 76 (vishnu.4.6.76)
āha ca rājā
The king said —
Verse 77 (vishnu.4.6.77)
vijitasakalārātiravihateṁdri yasāmarthyo baṁdhumānamitabalakośo'smi nānyadasmākamurvaśīsālokyātprāptavyamastitadahamanayā sahorvaśyā kālaṁ netumabhilaṣāmītyukte gaṁdharvā rājñe'gnisthālīṁ daduḥ
'I have conquered all my enemies, my senses are unimpaired, I have kinsmen, boundless strength and wealth — nothing remains for me except to remain ever with Urvashi; that is what I desire.' At this, the gandharvas gave the king a vessel of sacred fire.
Verse 78 (vishnu.4.6.78)
ūcuścainamagnimāmnāyānusārī bhūtvā tridhā kṛtvorvaśī salokatāmanorathamuddiśya samyagyajethāḥ tato'vaśyamabhilaṣitamavāpsyatītyuktastāmagnisthālīmādāya jagāma
They said to him: 'Following sacred tradition, divide this fire into three, and, wishing for constant companionship with Urvashi, duly sacrifice with it; then you shall surely obtain your desire.' Thus told, taking the vessel of fire, he set off.
Verse 79 (vishnu.4.6.79)
aṁtaraṭavyāmaciṁtayat aho me'tīva mūḍhatā kimahamakaravam
On the way, in the forest, he thought: 'Ah, how utterly foolish of me — what have I done!'
Verse 80 (vishnu.4.6.80)
vahnisthālī mayaiṣānītā norvaśīti
'I have brought only this vessel of fire, not Urvashi.'
Verse 81 (vishnu.4.6.81)
athaināmaṭavyāmevāgnisthālīṁ tatyāja svapuraṁ ca jagāma
So, right there in the forest, he abandoned the vessel of fire and went on to his own city.
Verse 82 (vishnu.4.6.82)
vyatīte'rddharātre vinidraścāciṁtayat
When half the night had passed, unable to sleep, he thought —
Verse 83 (vishnu.4.6.83)
mamorvaśīsālokyaprāptyarthamagnisthālī gaṁdharvairdattā sā ca mayāṭavyāṁ parityaktā
'The vessel of fire the gandharvas gave me for constant companionship with Urvashi — I have abandoned it in the forest!'
Verse 84 (vishnu.4.6.84)
tadahaṁ tatra tadāharaṇāya yāsyāmītyutthāya tatrāpyupagato nāgnisthālīmapaśyat
'I shall go there and fetch it.' Rising, he went there, but did not find the vessel of fire.
Verse 85 (vishnu.4.6.85)
śamīgarbhaṁ cāśvatthamagnisthālīsthāne dṛṣṭvā'ciṁtayat
Seeing, in place of the vessel, an ashvattha tree growing within a shami tree, he thought —
Verse 86 (vishnu.4.6.86)
mayātrāgnisthālī nikṣiptā sā cāśvatthaśśamīgarbho'bhūt
'I placed the vessel of fire here, and it has become this ashvattha growing within a shami.'
Verse 87 (vishnu.4.6.87)
tadenamevāhamagnirūpamādāya svapuramabhigamyāraṇīṁ kṛtvā tadutpannāgnerupāstiṁ kariṣyāmīti
'Therefore, taking this very wood as fire's form, I shall carry it to my city, make a fire-drill of it, and worship the fire it produces.'
Verse 88 (vishnu.4.6.88)
evameva svapuramabhigamyāraṇiṁ cakāra
And so, returning to his city, he made a fire-drill from it.
Verse 89 (vishnu.4.6.89)
tatpramāṇaṁ cāṁgulaiḥ kurvan gāyatrīmapaṭhat
Measuring it in finger-breadths, he recited the Gayatri mantra.
Verse 90 (vishnu.4.6.90)
paṭhataścākṣarasaṁkhyānyevāṁgulānyaraṇyabhavat
As many finger-breadths as the mantra had syllables, so long the fire-drill became.
Verse 91 (vishnu.4.6.91)
tatrāgniṁ nirmathyāgnitrayamāmnāyānusārī bhūtvā juhāva
Churning fire from it, and, following sacred tradition, dividing it into three sacred fires, he made offerings.
Verse 92 (vishnu.4.6.92)
urvaśīsālokyaṁ phalamabhisaṁdhitavān
He fixed his purpose upon the fruit of eternal companionship with Urvashi.
Verse 93 (vishnu.4.6.93)
tenaiva cāgnividhinā bahuvidhān yajñāniṣṭvā gāṁdharvalokānavāpyorvaśyā sahāviyogamavāpa
By that very rite of fire, performing many kinds of sacrifices, he obtained the worlds of the gandharvas and attained undying union with Urvashi.
Verse 94 (vishnu.4.6.94)
eko'gnirādāvabhavadekena tvatra manvaṁtare tredhā pravartitāḥ
In the beginning there was but a single fire; in this Manvantara it was he, Pururavas, who first divided it into three.
