The Rasa Dance

Verse 1 (vishnu.5.13.1)

गते शक्र तु गोपालाः कृष्णमक्लिष्टकारिणम् । ऊचुः प्रीत्या धृतं दृष्ट्वा तेन गोवर्द्धनाचलम्

gate śakra tu gopālāḥ kṛṣṇamakliṣṭakāriṇam ūcuḥ prītyā dhṛtaṁ dṛṣṭvā tena govarddhanācalam

When Shakra had gone, the cowherds, having seen Mount Govardhana held up by him, spoke with affection to Krishna of untiring deeds.

Verse 2 (vishnu.5.13.2)

वयमस्मान्महाबाहो! भवता महतो भयात् । गावश्व भवता त्राता गिरिधारणकर्म्मणा

vayamasmānmahābāho! bhavatā mahato bhayāt gāvaśva bhavatā trātā giridhāraṇakarmmaṇā

"'We, mighty-armed one, were saved by you from a great terror, and the cows too, saved by you, through the act of holding up the mountain.'"

Verse 3 (vishnu.5.13.3)

बालीक्रीड़ेयमतुला गोपालत्वं जुगुप्सितम् । दिव्यञ्च कर्म्म भवतः किमेतत् तात!कथ्यताम्

bālīkrīr̤eyamatulā gopālatvaṁ jugupsitam divyañca karmma bhavataḥ kimetat tāta!kathyatām

"'This incomparable childhood play of yours, this lowly form of a cowherd, and yet this divine deed — what is this, dear one? Tell us.'"

Verse 4 (vishnu.5.13.4)

कालियो दमितस्तोये प्रलम्बो विनिपातितः । धृतो गोवर्द्धनश्वायं शङ्कितानि मनांसि नः

kāliyo damitastoye pralambo vinipātitaḥ dhṛto govarddhanaśvāyaṁ śaṅkitāni manāṁsi naḥ

"'Kaliya was subdued in the water, Pralamba was struck down, and now this Govardhana has been held up — our minds are full of wonder.'"

Verse 5 (vishnu.5.13.5)

सत्यं सत्यं हरेः पादौ शापामीऽमितविक्रम । यथा त्वद्रीर्य्यमालोक्य न त्वां मन्यामहे नरम्

satyaṁ satyaṁ hareḥ pādau śāpāmī'mitavikrama yathā tvadrīryyamālokya na tvāṁ manyāmahe naram

"'O one of measureless prowess, I swear truly, by the very feet of Hari, that having seen your might we do not take you for a mortal man.'"

Verse 6 (vishnu.5.13.6)

प्रीतिः सस्त्रीकुमारस्य व्रजस्य तव केशव! कर्म्म चेदमशक्यं यत् समस्तैस्त्रिदशैरपि

prītiḥ sastrīkumārasya vrajasya tava keśava! karmma cedamaśakyaṁ yat samastaistridaśairapi

"'O Keshava, all of Vraja, women and children alike, loves you — and this deed of yours is one all the gods together could not accomplish.'"

Verse 7 (vishnu.5.13.7)

बालत्वं चातिवीर्य्यञ्च जन्म जास्मास्वशोभनम् । चिन्त्यमानममेयात्मन्!शङ्कां कृष्ण प्रयच्छति

bālatvaṁ cātivīryyañca janma jāsmāsvaśobhanam cintyamānamameyātman!śaṅkāṁ kṛṣṇa prayacchati

"'O immeasurable self, this childhood, this surpassing might, and this birth among us — when we ponder it, Krishna, it stirs up wonder in us.'"

Verse 8 (vishnu.5.13.8)

देवो वा दानवो वा त्वं यक्षो गन्धर्व्व एव वा । किं वास्माकं विचारेण बान्धवोऽसि नमोऽस्तु ते

devo vā dānavo vā tvaṁ yakṣo gandharvva eva vā kiṁ vāsmākaṁ vicāreṇa bāndhavo'si namo'stu te

"'Whether you are a god, a Danava, a Yaksha, or a Gandharva — what use is our wondering? You are our kinsman; salutation to you.'"

Verse 9 (vishnu.5.13.9)

क्षणं भूत्वा त्वसौ तूष्णीं किञ्चित् प्रणयकोपवान् । इत्येवमुक्तस्तैर्गोपैः कृष्णोऽप्याह महामुने

kṣaṇaṁ bhūtvā tvasau tūṣṇīṁ kiñcit praṇayakopavān ityevamuktastairgopaiḥ kṛṣṇo'pyāha mahāmune

O great sage, thus addressed by the cowherds, Krishna, after a moment's silence, a little displeased out of sheer affection, spoke.

Verse 10 (vishnu.5.13.10)

मत्सम्बन्धेन भो गोपा! यदि लज्जा न जायते । शलाध्यो वाहं ततऋः किं वो विचारेण प्रयोजनम्

matsambandhena bho gopā! yadi lajjā na jāyate śalādhyo vāhaṁ tataṛḥ kiṁ vo vicāreṇa prayojanam

"'O cowherds, if my kinship with you brings you no shame, and if I am worthy in your eyes — then what need have you of this speculation?'"

Verse 11 (vishnu.5.13.11)

यदि वोऽस्ति मयि प्रीतिः श्लाध्योऽहं भवतां यदि । तदात्मबन्धुसदृशी बुद्धिर्वः क्रियतां मयि

yadi vo'sti mayi prītiḥ ślādhyo'haṁ bhavatāṁ yadi tadātmabandhusadṛśī buddhirvaḥ kriyatāṁ mayi

"'If you love me, and if I am worthy of praise from you, then let your feeling toward me be that of a kinsman as dear as your own self.'"

Verse 12 (vishnu.5.13.12)

नाहं देवो न गन्धर्व्वो न यक्षो न च दानवः । अहं वो बान्धवो जातो नास्ति चिन्त्यमतोऽन्यथा

nāhaṁ devo na gandharvvo na yakṣo na ca dānavaḥ ahaṁ vo bāndhavo jāto nāsti cintyamato'nyathā

"'I am no god, no Gandharva, no Yaksha, no Danava; I have been born your own kinsman — there is nothing further to consider.'"

Verse 13 (vishnu.5.13.13)

इति श्रुत्वा हरेर्वाक्यं बद्धमौनास्ततो वनम् । ययूर्गोपा महाभाग!तस्मिन् प्रणयकोपितनि

iti śrutvā harervākyaṁ baddhamaunāstato vanam yayūrgopā mahābhāga!tasmin praṇayakopitani

O illustrious one, hearing these words of Hari, the cowherds went off silently into the forest, while he remained, still mildly displeased out of affection.

Verse 14 (vishnu.5.13.14)

कृष्णस्तु विमलं व्योम शरच्चन्द्रस्य चन्दिरकाम् । तथा कुमुदिनीं फुल्लामामोदितदिगन्तराम्

kṛṣṇastu vimalaṁ vyoma śaraccandrasya candirakām tathā kumudinīṁ phullāmāmoditadigantarām

Krishna, beholding the clear sky, the moonlight of the autumn moon, and the blooming lotus-bed filling the horizon with fragrance —

Verse 15 (vishnu.5.13.15)

वनराजिं तथा कूजदूभृङ्गमालां मनोरमाम् । विलोक्य सह गोपीभिर्मनश्वक्र रतिं प्रति

vanarājiṁ tathā kūjadūbhṛṅgamālāṁ manoramām vilokya saha gopībhirmanaśvakra ratiṁ prati

— and the lovely rows of forest trees, humming with garlands of bees, seeing all this, his mind turned toward delight together with the gopis.

Verse 16 (vishnu.5.13.16)

सह रामेणा मधुरमतीव वनिताप्रियम् । जगौ कलपदं शौरिर्नानातन्त्री-कृतव्रतम्

saha rāmeṇā madhuramatīva vanitāpriyam jagau kalapadaṁ śaurirnānātantrī-kṛtavratam

Together with Rama, Shauri sang a most sweet melody, dear to women, matched to a variety of stringed instruments.

Verse 17 (vishnu.5.13.17)

रम्यं गीतध्वनि श्रत्वा सन्त्यज्यावसथांस्तदा । आजग्मुस्त्वरिता गोप्यो यत्रास्ते मधृसूदनः

ramyaṁ gītadhvani śratvā santyajyāvasathāṁstadā ājagmustvaritā gopyo yatrāste madhṛsūdanaḥ

Hearing that lovely sound of song, the gopis then left their homes and hurried to where Madhusudana was.

Verse 18 (vishnu.5.13.18)

शनैः शनैर्ज्जगौ गोपी काचित् तस्य लयानुगम् । दत्तावधाना काचित्तू तमेव मनसास्मरत्

śanaiḥ śanairjjagau gopī kācit tasya layānugam dattāvadhānā kācittū tameva manasāsmarat

One gopi sang softly along, following his rhythm; another, wholly attentive, held him alone in mind.

Verse 19 (vishnu.5.13.19)

काचित् कृष्णेति कृष्णेति प्रेक्त्वा लज्जामुपागता । ययौ च काचित् प्रेमान्धा ततपार्श्वमविलज्जिता

kācit kṛṣṇeti kṛṣṇeti prektvā lajjāmupāgatā yayau ca kācit premāndhā tatapārśvamavilajjitā

One, crying "Krishna, Krishna!", was overcome with shyness; another, blinded by love, went to his side with no shyness at all.

Verse 20 (vishnu.5.13.20)

काचिदावसथस्यान्तः स्थिता दृष्ट्वा बहिर्गुरून् । तन्मयत्वेन गोविन्दं दध्यौ मीलितलोचना

kācidāvasathasyāntaḥ sthitā dṛṣṭvā bahirgurūn tanmayatvena govindaṁ dadhyau mīlitalocanā

One, remaining inside her house, seeing the elders outside, meditated on Govinda alone, wholly absorbed, her eyes shut.

Verse 21 (vishnu.5.13.21)

तच्विन्ताविपुलाह्लाद-क्षीणपुणयचया तथा । तदप्राप्ति-महादुःविलीनाशेषपातका

tacvintāvipulāhlāda-kṣīṇapuṇayacayā tathā tadaprāpti-mahāduḥvilīnāśeṣapātakā

— she whose store of merit was spent away in the vast joy of contemplating him, and whose every remaining sin dissolved in the deep sorrow of not attaining him —

Verse 22 (vishnu.5.13.22)

चिन्तयन्ती जगत्सूतिं परब्रह्मस्वरूपिणम् । निरुच्छ्वासतया मुक्ति गतान्या गोपकन्यका

cintayantī jagatsūtiṁ parabrahmasvarūpiṇam nirucchvāsatayā mukti gatānyā gopakanyakā

— another cowherd girl, meditating on him, the origin of the world, of the very nature of the Supreme Brahman, attained liberation through the stilling of her breath.

Verse 23 (vishnu.5.13.23)

गोपीपरिवृतो रात्रि शरचन्द्रमनोरमाम् । मानयामास गोविन्दो रासारम्भरसोत्सुकः

gopīparivṛto rātri śaracandramanoramām mānayāmāsa govindo rāsārambharasotsukaḥ

Govinda, surrounded by the gopis, eager for the delight of beginning the Rasa dance, honored that night, lovely with the autumn moon.

Verse 24 (vishnu.5.13.24)

गोप्यश्व वृन्दशः कृष्णचेष्टास्वायत्तमूर्त्तयः । अन्यदेशं गते कृष्णो चेरुर्वृन्दावमान्तरम्

gopyaśva vṛndaśaḥ kṛṣṇaceṣṭāsvāyattamūrttayaḥ anyadeśaṁ gate kṛṣṇo cerurvṛndāvamāntaram

And the gopis, in throngs, their bodies given over entirely to Krishna's play, when Krishna had gone off elsewhere, wandered through Vrindavana.

Verse 25 (vishnu.5.13.25)

कृष्णो निरुद्धह्टदया इदसूचुः परस्परम् । कृष्णोऽहमेतल्ललितं व्रजाम्यालोक्यतां गतिः । अन्या ब्रवीति कष्णस्य मम गीतिर्निशम्यताम्

kṛṣṇo niruddhahṭadayā idasūcuḥ parasparam kṛṣṇo'hametallalitaṁ vrajāmyālokyatāṁ gatiḥ anyā bravīti kaṣṇasya mama gītirniśamyatām

Their hearts held fast by Krishna, they said to one another: "I am Krishna! Watch this graceful walk of mine!" said one. Another said: "Hear this song of mine about Krishna!"

Verse 26 (vishnu.5.13.26)

दुषृकालिय!तिष्ठात्र कृणोऽहमिति चापरा । बाहुमास्फोठ्य कृष्णस्य लीलासर्व्वस्वमाददे

duṣṛkāliya!tiṣṭhātra kṛṇo'hamiti cāparā bāhumāsphoṭhya kṛṣṇasya līlāsarvvasvamādade

"Wicked Kaliya, stand your ground — I am Krishna!" said another, and, slapping her own arm, took up the whole play of Krishna's deed.

Verse 27 (vishnu.5.13.27)

अन्यां ब्रवीति भो गोपा!निः शङ्कः स्थीयतामिह । अलं बृष्टिभयेनात्र धृतो गोवर्द्धनो मया

anyāṁ bravīti bho gopā!niḥ śaṅkaḥ sthīyatāmiha alaṁ bṛṣṭibhayenātra dhṛto govarddhano mayā

Another said: "Cowherds, stay right here without fear; enough of the terror of the rain — I have held up Govardhana!"

Verse 28 (vishnu.5.13.28)

धेनुकोऽयं मया क्षिप्तो विचरन्लु यथेच्छया । गोपी ब्रवीति वै चान्या कृष्मालीलानुकारिणी

dhenuko'yaṁ mayā kṣipto vicaranlu yathecchayā gopī bravīti vai cānyā kṛṣmālīlānukāriṇī

"This Dhenuka, wandering about as he pleased, I flung down myself" — so said yet another gopi, mimicking Krishna's deeds.

Verse 29 (vishnu.5.13.29)

एवं नानाप्रकारासु कृष्णचेष्टासु तास्तदा । गोप्या व्यग्राः समं चरू रम्य वृन्दावनान्तरम्

evaṁ nānāprakārāsu kṛṣṇaceṣṭāsu tāstadā gopyā vyagrāḥ samaṁ carū ramya vṛndāvanāntaram

Thus absorbed in Krishna's deeds in one way or another, the gopis wandered together through lovely Vrindavana.

Verse 30 (vishnu.5.13.30)

विलोक्यैका भुवं प्राह् गोपी गोपवराङ्गना । पुलकाञ्चितसर्व्वाङ्गी विकाशि-नयनोत्पला

vilokyaikā bhuvaṁ prāh gopī gopavarāṅganā pulakāñcitasarvvāṅgī vikāśi-nayanotpalā

One gopi, finest among the cowherd women, her whole body thrilling with joy, her lotus-eyes wide, looking down at the ground, said —

Verse 31 (vishnu.5.13.31)

ध्वजवज्राङ्कु शाब्जाङ्क-रेखावन्त्यालि पश्यत । पदान्येतानि कृष्णस्य लीलालङ्कृतगामिनः

dhvajavajrāṅku śābjāṅka-rekhāvantyāli paśyata padānyetāni kṛṣṇasya līlālaṅkṛtagāminaḥ

"'Friends, look — these footprints, marked with the lines of banner, thunderbolt, goad, and lotus, are the very footprints of Krishna, whose walk is grace itself.'"

Verse 32 (vishnu.5.13.32)

कापि तेम समं याता कृतपुण्या मदालसा । पदानि तस्याश्चैतानि घनान्यल्पतनूनि च

kāpi tema samaṁ yātā kṛtapuṇyā madālasā padāni tasyāścaitāni ghanānyalpatanūni ca

"'Some fortunate, love-languid one has gone along at his side; these are her footprints too, close-set and small.'"

Verse 33 (vishnu.5.13.33)

पुष्पावचयमत्रोच्चैश्वक्रे दामोदरो ध्रु वम् । येनाग्राक्रान्तिमात्राणि पदान्यत्र महात्मनः

puṣpāvacayamatroccaiśvakre dāmodaro dhru vam yenāgrākrāntimātrāṇi padānyatra mahātmanaḥ

"'Surely here Damodara reached up high to gather flowers, for here that great soul's footprints touch the ground only at the toes.'"

Verse 34 (vishnu.5.13.34)

अत्रोपविश्य सा तेन कापि पुष्पैरलङ्कृता । अन्यजन्मनि सर्व्वात्मा विष्णुरभ्यर्ज्वितो यया

atropaviśya sā tena kāpi puṣpairalaṅkṛtā anyajanmani sarvvātmā viṣṇurabhyarjvito yayā

"'Here he sat and decked with flowers that fortunate one who, in some other birth, had worshipped the all-Self Vishnu.'"

Verse 35 (vishnu.5.13.35)

पुष्पबन्धनसम्मान-कृतमानामपास्य ताम् । नन्दगोपसुतो यातो मार्गेणानेन पश्यत

puṣpabandhanasammāna-kṛtamānāmapāsya tām nandagopasuto yāto mārgeṇānena paśyata

"'See — leaving that woman, made proud by the honor of being decked in flowers, the son of Nandagopa went off along this path.'"

Verse 36 (vishnu.5.13.36)

अनुयानेऽसमर्थान्या नितम्बभरमन्थरा । या गन्तव्ये द्रुतं याति निम्रपादाग्रसंस्थितिः

anuyāne'samarthānyā nitambabharamantharā yā gantavye drutaṁ yāti nimrapādāgrasaṁsthitiḥ

"'This other one, slowed by the weight of her hips, could not keep pace; yet where haste was needed she moved quickly, up on the balls of her feet.'"

Verse 37 (vishnu.5.13.37)

हस्तन्यस्ताग्रहस्तेयं तेन याति तथा सखि! अनायत्तपदन्यासा लक्ष्यते पदपद्धतिः

hastanyastāgrahasteyaṁ tena yāti tathā sakhi! anāyattapadanyāsā lakṣyate padapaddhatiḥ

"'Friend, this one walked with her hand held in his — so her row of footprints comes out uneven, not set down on her own.'"

Verse 38 (vishnu.5.13.38)

हस्तसंस्पर्शमात्रेण धूर्त्तेनैषा विमानिता । नैराश्यमन्दगामिन्या निवुत्तं लक्ष्यते पदम

hastasaṁsparśamātreṇa dhūrttenaiṣā vimānitā nairāśyamandagāminyā nivuttaṁ lakṣyate padama

"'Deceived by that rogue with the mere touch of his hand, this one's footprints, slow with despair, are seen turning back.'"

Verse 39 (vishnu.5.13.39)

नूनमुक्ता त्वरामीति पुनरेष्यामि तेऽन्तिकम् । तेन कृष्णेन येनैषा त्वरिता पदपद्धतिः

nūnamuktā tvarāmīti punareṣyāmi te'ntikam tena kṛṣṇena yenaiṣā tvaritā padapaddhatiḥ

"'Surely that Krishna told her, \'Do not hurry, I shall come to you again\' — for see how quick her row of footprints runs.'"

Verse 40 (vishnu.5.13.40)

प्रविष्टो गहनं कृष्णः पदमत्र न लक्ष्यते । निवर्त्तध्व शशाङ्कस्य नैतद्दीधितिगोचरे

praviṣṭo gahanaṁ kṛṣṇaḥ padamatra na lakṣyate nivarttadhva śaśāṅkasya naitaddīdhitigocare

"'Krishna has gone into the thicket; no footprint shows here any further — turn back, for this lies beyond the moon's own light.'"

Verse 41 (vishnu.5.13.41)

निवृत्तास्तास्ततो गोप्यो निराशाः कृष्णदर्शने । यमुनातीरमागत्य जगुस्तज्वरितं तदा

nivṛttāstāstato gopyo nirāśāḥ kṛṣṇadarśane yamunātīramāgatya jagustajvaritaṁ tadā

Then those gopis, having turned back, despairing of seeing Krishna, came to the bank of the Yamuna and sang there of his deeds.

Verse 42 (vishnu.5.13.42)

ततो ददृशुरायान्तं विकाशिमुखपङ्कजम् । गोप्यस्त्रैलोक्यगोप्तारं कृष्णमक्लिष्टचेष्टितम्

tato dadṛśurāyāntaṁ vikāśimukhapaṅkajam gopyastrailokyagoptāraṁ kṛṣṇamakliṣṭaceṣṭitam

Then the gopis saw Krishna approaching, guardian of the three worlds, of untiring deeds, his lotus-face in bloom.

Verse 43 (vishnu.5.13.43)

काचिदालोक्य गोविन्दमायान्तमतिहर्षिता । कूष्ण् कृष्णेति कृष्णेति प्राह नान्यदुदैरयत्

kācidālokya govindamāyāntamatiharṣitā kūṣṇ kṛṣṇeti kṛṣṇeti prāha nānyadudairayat

One, seeing Govinda approach, overjoyed, cried only, "Krishna, Krishna, Krishna!" and said nothing else.

Verse 44 (vishnu.5.13.44)

काचिदू भ्रू भङ्गुरं कृत्वा ललाटफलकं हरिम् । विलोक्य नैत्रभृङ्गाभ्यां पपौ यन्मुखपङ्कजम्

kācidū bhrū bhaṅguraṁ kṛtvā lalāṭaphalakaṁ harim vilokya naitrabhṛṅgābhyāṁ papau yanmukhapaṅkajam

One, arching her brow upon her forehead, gazed at Hari, and with the two bees of her eyes drank in his lotus-face.

Verse 45 (vishnu.5.13.45)

काचिदालोक्य गोविन्दं निमीलित-विलोचना । तस्यैव रूपं ध्यायन्ती योगारूढ़ेव चाबभौ

kācidālokya govindaṁ nimīlita-vilocanā tasyaiva rūpaṁ dhyāyantī yogārūr̤heva cābabhau

One, having seen Govinda, closed her eyes, and, meditating on his form alone, shone as though absorbed in yoga.

Verse 46 (vishnu.5.13.46)

ततः काश्वित् प्रियालापैः काश्विदू भ्रू भङ्गवीक्षणः । निन्येऽनुनयमन्याञ्च करस्पर्शेन माघवः

tataḥ kāśvit priyālāpaiḥ kāśvidū bhrū bhaṅgavīkṣaṇaḥ ninye'nunayamanyāñca karasparśena māghavaḥ

Then Madhava won some over with loving words, some with a glance and an arch of the brow, and others by the touch of his hand.

Verse 47 (vishnu.5.13.47)

ताभिः प्रसन्नचित्तामभिर्गोपीभिः सह सादरम् । रराम रासगोष्ठीभिरुदारचरितो हरिः

tābhiḥ prasannacittāmabhirgopībhiḥ saha sādaram rarāma rāsagoṣṭhībhirudāracarito hariḥ

Hari, of noble conduct, sported respectfully with those gopis, their hearts now content, in the gatherings of the Rasa dance.

Verse 48 (vishnu.5.13.48)

रासमणडलबन्धोऽपि कृष्णपार्श्वमनुजूझता । गोपीजनेन नैवाभूदेकस्थानस्थिरात्मना

rāsamaṇaḍalabandho'pi kṛṣṇapārśvamanujūjhatā gopījanena naivābhūdekasthānasthirātmanā

Even the shape of the Rasa circle would not stay fixed in one place, since every gopi pressed to remain close beside Krishna.

Verse 49 (vishnu.5.13.49)

हर्ते प्रगृह्य चैकैकां गोपिकां रासमणडलीम् । चकार तत्करस्पर्श-निमीलितदृशं हरिः

harte pragṛhya caikaikāṁ gopikāṁ rāsamaṇaḍalīm cakāra tatkarasparśa-nimīlitadṛśaṁ hariḥ

Taking each gopi by the hand, Hari formed the Rasa circle, and at the touch of his hand each one's eyes closed.

Verse 50 (vishnu.5.13.50)

ततः स ववृते रासश्वलदूवलयनिः स्वनः । अनुयातशरतूकाव्यगेयगीतिरनुक्रमात्

tataḥ sa vavṛte rāsaśvaladūvalayaniḥ svanaḥ anuyātaśaratūkāvyageyagītiranukramāt

Then that Rasa dance turned round, ringing with the jingle of moving bangles, its songs following in order, sung to autumn's own melodies.

Verse 51 (vishnu.5.13.51)

कृष्णाः शरज्वन्द्रमसं कौमुदीं कुमुदाकरम् । जगौ गोपीजनस्त्वेकं कूष्णनाम पुनः पुनः

kṛṣṇāḥ śarajvandramasaṁ kaumudīṁ kumudākaram jagau gopījanastvekaṁ kūṣṇanāma punaḥ punaḥ

Some sang of the autumn moon, the moonlight, the bed of lotuses; but the rest of the gopis sang, again and again, of Krishna's name alone.

Verse 52 (vishnu.5.13.52)

परिवर्त्तश्रमेणोक चलदूवलयलापिनीम् । ददौ बाहुलतां स्कन्धे गोपी मधुनिघातिनः

parivarttaśrameṇoka caladūvalayalāpinīm dadau bāhulatāṁ skandhe gopī madhunighātinaḥ

One gopi, tired from the whirling, her bangles jingling, laid her creeper-like arm upon the shoulder of the slayer of Madhu.

Verse 53 (vishnu.5.13.53)

काचित् प्रविलसदूबाहुः परिरभ्य चुचुम्ब तम् । गोपी गीतस्तुतिव्याज-निपुणा मधुसूदनम्

kācit pravilasadūbāhuḥ parirabhya cucumba tam gopī gītastutivyāja-nipuṇā madhusūdanam

One gopi, skilled at disguising it as praise through song, would embrace and kiss Madhusudana with her gleaming arm.

Verse 54 (vishnu.5.13.54)

गोपी-कपोल-संश्लेषमभिपत्य हरेभुर्जौ । पुलकोदूगमशस्याय स्वेदाम्बुघनतां गतौ

gopī-kapola-saṁśleṣamabhipatya harebhurjau pulakodūgamaśasyāya svedāmbughanatāṁ gatau

Hari's arms, pressed against the cheeks of a gopi, grew thick with beads of sweat, as though to nourish the crop of thrilled goose-flesh springing up there.

Verse 55 (vishnu.5.13.55)

रासगेयं जगौ कृष्णेति यावत् तारतरध्वनिः । साधु कृष्णेति कृष्णेतितावत् ता द्रिगुणं अगुः

rāsageyaṁ jagau kṛṣṇeti yāvat tārataradhvaniḥ sādhu kṛṣṇeti kṛṣṇetitāvat tā driguṇaṁ aguḥ

As high as Krishna's voice rose in the Rasa-song, that much and twice again did they sing out, "Well done, Krishna! Krishna!"

Verse 56 (vishnu.5.13.56)

गते तु गमनं चक्रु र्वलने सम्मुखं ययुः । प्रतिलोमानुलोमाब्यां भेजुर्गोपाङ्गना हरिम्

gate tu gamanaṁ cakru rvalane sammukhaṁ yayuḥ pratilomānulomābyāṁ bhejurgopāṅganā harim

When he moved forward, they moved too; when he turned, they turned to face him; matching his every step, forward and back, the cowherd women followed Hari.

Verse 57 (vishnu.5.13.57)

स तथा सह गोपीभी रराम मघुसूदनः । यथाब्दकोटिप्रमितः क्षणस्तेन विनामवत्

sa tathā saha gopībhī rarāma maghusūdanaḥ yathābdakoṭipramitaḥ kṣaṇastena vināmavat

Thus Madhusudana sported with the gopis, until even a single moment spent with him seemed to them long as a hundred million years.

Verse 58 (vishnu.5.13.58)

ता वार्य्यमाणाः पतिभिः पितृभिर्भ्रातृभिस्तथा । कृष्णां गोपाङ्गना रात्रौ रमयन्ति रतिप्रियाः

tā vāryyamāṇāḥ patibhiḥ pitṛbhirbhrātṛbhistathā kṛṣṇāṁ gopāṅganā rātrau ramayanti ratipriyāḥ

Those cowherd women, restrained though they were by their husbands, fathers, and brothers, given over to that love, would still sport with Krishna through the night.

Verse 59 (vishnu.5.13.59)

सोऽपि कैशोरकवयो मानयन् मधुसूदनः । रेमे ताभिरमेयात्मा क्षपासु क्षपिताहितः

so'pi kaiśorakavayo mānayan madhusūdanaḥ reme tābhirameyātmā kṣapāsu kṣapitāhitaḥ

He too, Madhusudana of immeasurable self, having destroyed his foes, honoring the ways proper to his youth, sported with them through those nights.

Verse 60 (vishnu.5.13.60)

तद्भर्त्तृषु तथा तासु सर्व्वभूतेषु चेश्वरः । आत्मखरूपरूपोऽसौ व्याप्य सर्व्वमवस्थितः

tadbharttṛṣu tathā tāsu sarvvabhūteṣu ceśvaraḥ ātmakharūparūpo'sau vyāpya sarvvamavasthitaḥ

For in their husbands as much as in those gopis, and indeed in every being, the Lord, whose very form is the Self, stands, pervading all alike.

Verse 61 (vishnu.5.13.61)

यथा समस्तभूतेषु नभोऽग्रिः पृथिवी जलम् । वायुश्वात्मा तथैवासौ व्याप्य सर्व्वमवस्थितः

yathā samastabhūteṣu nabho'griḥ pṛthivī jalam vāyuśvātmā tathaivāsau vyāpya sarvvamavasthitaḥ

As sky, fire, earth, water, wind, and the Self dwell alike in every being, so too does he remain, pervading all things equally.
