Amsa 5 · Chapter 18

Akrura's Vision and Hymn in the Yamuna

Chapter 17All chaptersChapter 19

Verse 1 (vishnu.5.18.1)

cintayanniti govindamupāgamya sa yādavaḥ akrūro'smīti caraṇau nanāma śirasā hareḥ

Thinking thus, that Yadava approached Govinda and, saying 'I am Akrura,' bowed his head to Hari's feet.

Verse 2 (vishnu.5.18.2)

so'pyenaṁ dhvajavajrābjakṛtacihnena pāṇinā saṁspṛśyākṛṣya ca prītyā sugāḍhaṁ pariṣasvaje

He too, with a hand marked with the signs of the banner, thunderbolt, and lotus, touched him, drew him close, and embraced him tightly with affection.

Verse 3 (vishnu.5.18.3)

kṛtasaṁvādanau tena yathāvadbalakeśavau tataḥ praviṣṭau saṁhṛṣṭau tamādāyātmamandiram

Having thus duly exchanged greetings with Bala and Keshava, they, filled with joy, took him along into their own dwelling.

Verse 4 (vishnu.5.18.4)

saha tābhyāṁ tadākrūraḥ kṛtasaṁvādanādikaḥ bhuktabhojyo yathānyāyamācacakṣe tatastayoḥ

Seated with the two of them, having exchanged the courtesies, and after the meal was taken, Akrura then related to them, in due order —

Verse 5 (vishnu.5.18.5)

yathā nirbhartsyate tena kaṁsenānakadundubhiḥ yathā ca devakī devī dānavena durātmanā

how Anakadundubhi was reviled by Kamsa, and how the goddess Devaki too was reviled by that wicked demon,

Verse 6 (vishnu.5.18.6)

ugrasene yathā kaṁsaḥ sudurātmā ca varttate yaṁ caivārthaṁ samuddiśya sa kaṁsena visarjitaḥ

and how utterly evil was Kamsa's conduct toward Ugrasena, and the very purpose for which Kamsa had sent him — all of this he related.

Verse 7 (vishnu.5.18.7)

tat sarvvaṁ vistarācchrutvā bhagavān keśisūdanaḥ uvācākhilamapyetajjñātaṁ dānapate mayā

Having heard all this in full detail, the Blessed Lord, slayer of Keshi, said: 'O most generous one, all this was already known to me.'

Verse 8 (vishnu.5.18.8)

kariṣye ca mahābhāga yadatraupayikaṁ matam vicintyaṁ nānyathaitat te viddhi kaṁsaṁ hataṁ mayā

'O illustrious one, whatever course seems fitting here, that I shall do; there is no need to ponder otherwise — know that Kamsa is already as good as slain by me.'

Verse 9 (vishnu.5.18.9)

ahaṁ rāmaśca mathurāṁ śvo yāsyāvaḥ samaṁ tvayā gopavṛddhāśca yāsyanti ādāyopāyanaṁ bahu

'Tomorrow Rama and I shall go to Mathura together with you, and the elders among the cowherds too will go, bringing much tribute.'

Verse 10 (vishnu.5.18.10)

niśeyaṁ nīyatāṁ vīra na cintāṁ karttumarhasi trirātrābhyantare kaṁsaṁ haniṣyāmi sahānugam

'O hero, let this night pass here; you have no need to worry. Within three nights I shall slay Kamsa along with his followers.'

Verse 11 (vishnu.5.18.11)

samādiśya tato gopānakrūro'pi sakeśavaḥ suṣvāpa balabhadraśca nandagopagṛhe sukham

Having thus instructed the cowherds, Akrura, together with Keshava, and Balabhadra too, slept happily that night in the house of Nanda the cowherd.

Verse 12 (vishnu.5.18.12)

tataḥ prabhāte vimale kṛṣṇarāmau mahāmatī akrūreṇa samaṁ gantumudyatau mathurāṁ prati

Then, when the clear dawn had come, the wise Krishna and Rama made ready to depart for Mathura together with Akrura.

Verse 13 (vishnu.5.18.13)

dṛṣṭvā gopījanaḥ sāśruḥ ślathadvalayabāhukaḥ niḥśvasya cātiduḥkhārttaḥ prāha cedaṁ parasparam

Seeing this, the gopis, their eyes filled with tears and the bangles slipping loose on their arms, sighing in the depths of their grief, said to one another —

Verse 14 (vishnu.5.18.14)

mathurāṁ prāpya govindaḥ kathaṁ gokulameṣyati nāgarastrīkalālāpamadhu śrotreṇa pāsyati

'Once Govinda reaches Mathura, how will he ever return to Gokula? His ears will drink in the sweet, clever chatter of the city women there.'

Verse 15 (vishnu.5.18.15)

vilāsivākyapāneṣu nāgarīṇāṁ kṛtāspadam cittamasya kathaṁ bhūyo grāmyagopīṣu yāsyati

'Once his mind takes root among those city women, absorbed in drinking their playful, seductive words, how could it ever turn back again to us, mere village cowherd-girls?'

Verse 16 (vishnu.5.18.16)

sāraṁ samastagoṣṭhasya vidhinā haratā harim prahṛtaṁ gopayoṣitsu nirghṛṇena durātmanā

'By fate's own decree, Hari — the very essence of this whole cow-settlement — is being carried away; this is a blow struck against us cowherd women by that pitiless, evil-souled one.'

Verse 17 (vishnu.5.18.17)

bhāvagarbhasmitaṁ vākyaṁ vilāsalalitā gatiḥ nāgarīṇāmatīvaitat kaṭākṣaikṣitameva ca

'That smile brimming with feeling, that sweet playful speech, that graceful, alluring gait — all this will now be seen only through the sidelong glances of city women.'

Verse 18 (vishnu.5.18.18)

grāmyo harirayaṁ tāsāṁ vilāsanigaḍairyutaḥ bhavatīnāṁ punaḥ pārśvaṁ kayā yuktyā sameṣyati

'This rustic Hari of ours, now bound in the fetters of their allurements — by what stratagem will he ever come back again to your side?'

Verse 19 (vishnu.5.18.19)

eṣa eṣa rathamāruhya mathurāṁ yāti keśavaḥ krūreṇākrūrakeṇātra nirāśena pratāritaḥ

'Look, look — Keshava, mounting his chariot, is going to Mathura, deceived by this cruel, hope-destroying Akrura here.'

Verse 20 (vishnu.5.18.20)

kiṁ na vetti nṛśaṁso'yamanurāgaparaṁ janam yenemamakṣṇorāhlādaṁ nayatyanyatra no harim

'Does this merciless man not know that we are people utterly given over to love, that he is taking away this very delight of our eyes elsewhere?'

Verse 21 (vishnu.5.18.21)

eṣa rāmeṇa sahitaḥ prayātyatyantanirghṛṇaḥ rathamāruhya govindastvaryatāmasya vāraṇe

'Look, this utterly pitiless Govinda, together with Rama, mounted upon his chariot, is going — hasten now to hold him back!'

Verse 22 (vishnu.5.18.22)

gurūṇāmagrato vaktuṁ kiṁ bravīṣi na naḥ kṣamam guravaḥ kiṁ kariṣyanti dagdhānāṁ virahāgninā

'Is it not fitting for us to speak before our elders? But what indeed can our elders do for us, consumed as we already are by the fire of separation?'

Verse 23 (vishnu.5.18.23)

nandagopamukhā gopā gantumete samudyatāḥ nodyamaṁ kurute kaścidgovindavinivartane

'Even the cowherds, led by Nanda, are themselves getting ready to go along; yet no one at all is making any effort to turn Govinda back.'

Verse 24 (vishnu.5.18.24)

suprabhātādya rajanī mathurāvāsiyoṣitām pāsyantyacyutavaktrābjāṁ yāsāṁ netrālipaṅktayaḥ

'Today the night will dawn most auspiciously for the women dwelling in Mathura, whose very rows of glances shall drink in Achyuta's lotus-face.'

Verse 25 (vishnu.5.18.25)

dhanyāste pathi ye kṛṣṇamito yāntyanivāritāḥ udvahiṣyanti paśyantaḥ svadehaṁ pulakāñcitam

'Blessed indeed are those who, unhindered, shall go this road with Krishna — seeing their own bodies thrilled with rapture, they shall count themselves fortunate.'

Verse 26 (vishnu.5.18.26)

mathurānagarīpauranayanānāṁ mahotsavaḥ govindāvayavairdṛṣṭairatīvādya bhaviṣyati

'For the eyes of the citizens of Mathura city, a great festival is about to take place today, at the very sight of Govinda's limbs.'

Verse 27 (vishnu.5.18.27)

ko nu svapnaḥ subhāgyābhirdṛṣṭastābhiradhokṣajam vistārikāntinayanā yā drakṣyantyanivāritam

'What dream indeed was it, by which those most fortunate women beheld Adhokshaja — those wide, lustrous-eyed women who shall now see him without hindrance?'

Verse 28 (vishnu.5.18.28)

aho gopījanasyāsya darśayitvā mahānidhim uddhṛtānyatra netrāṇi vidhātrākaruṇātmanā

'Alas! Having first shown this multitude of gopis so great a treasure, the merciless Ordainer has, as it were, plucked out our very eyes here on the spot.'

Verse 29 (vishnu.5.18.29)

anurāgeṇa śaithilyamasmāsu vrajatā hareḥ śaithilyamupayāntyāśu kareṣu valayānyapi

As Hari departs from us, the very slackness that love has brought upon us is, even now, swiftly overtaking the bangles upon his own hands as well.

Verse 30 (vishnu.5.18.30)

akrūraḥ krūrahṛdayaḥ śīghraṁ prerayate hayān evamārttāsu yoṣitsu ghṛṇā kasya na jāyate

That cruel-hearted Akrura drives the horses on with all speed; who indeed would not feel pity, seeing women so afflicted as these?

Verse 31 (vishnu.5.18.31)

hā hā kṛṣṇarathasyoccaiśca cakrareṇurnirīkṣyatām dūrīkṛto hariryena so'pi reṇurna lakṣyate

'Alas, alas! Look now only at the high-risen dust from Krishna's chariot-wheel — the very one on account of which Hari has become distant; even that dust itself can no longer be seen.'

Verse 32 (vishnu.5.18.32)

ityevamatihārdena gopījananirīkṣitaḥ tatyāja vrajabhūbhāgaṁ saha rāmeṇa keśavaḥ

Thus, gazed upon with the deepest tenderness by the multitude of gopis, Keshava, together with Rama, left the land of Vraja behind.

Verse 33 (vishnu.5.18.33)

gacchanto javitāśvena rathena yamunātaṭam prāptā madhyāhnasamaye rāmākrūrajanārdanāḥ

Journeying on with a chariot of swift horses, Rama, Akrura, and Janardana reached the bank of the Yamuna at the hour of midday.

Verse 34 (vishnu.5.18.34)

athāha kṛṣṇamakrūro bhavadbhyāṁ tāvadāsyatām yāvat karomi kālindyāmāhnikārhaṇamambhasi

Then Akrura said to Krishna: 'Let the two of you wait here a while, until I complete my daily rites in the waters of the Kalindi.'

Verse 35 (vishnu.5.18.35)

tathetyuktastataḥ snātaḥ svācāntaḥ sa mahāmatiḥ dadhyau brahma paraṁ vipra praviśya yamunājale

'So be it,' was said; then that wise Akrura, having bathed and rinsed his mouth, entered the waters of the Yamuna and, O brahmin, began to meditate upon the supreme Brahman.

Verse 36 (vishnu.5.18.36)

phaṇāsahasramālāḍhyaṁ balabhadraṁ dadarśa saḥ kundamālāṅgamunnidrapadmapatrāruṇekṣaṇam

There he beheld Balabhadra, resplendent with a garland of a thousand serpent-hoods, his limbs adorned with a garland of kunda flowers, his eyes as ruddy as the petals of a fully-blossomed lotus,

Verse 37 (vishnu.5.18.37)

vṛtaṁ vāsukirambhādyairmahadbhiḥ pavanāśibhiḥ saṁstūyamānaṁ gandharvairvanamālāvibhūṣitam

encircled by the great air-feeding serpents headed by Vasuki and the rest, praised by gandharvas, adorned with a garland of forest flowers —

Verse 38 (vishnu.5.18.38)

dadhānamasite vastre cārupadmāvataṁsakam cārukuṇḍalinaṁ bhāntamantarjalatale sthitam

clad in dark-blue garments, wearing a lovely lotus for an ear-ornament, adorned with beautiful earrings, radiant, seated at the bottom of the water, absorbed in bliss —

Verse 39 (vishnu.5.18.39)

tasyotsaṅge ghanaśyāmamātāmrāyatalocanam caturbāhumudārāṅgaṁ cakrādyāyudhabhūṣaṇam

and in his lap, one of deep dark hue, with large coppery-red eyes, four-armed, of noble limbs, adorned with the discus and other weapons —

Verse 40 (vishnu.5.18.40)

pīte vasānaṁ vasane citramālyavibhūṣaṇam śakracāpataḍinmālāvicitramiva toyadam

wearing a yellow garment, adorned with varied garlands of flowers, like a rain-cloud streaked with the rainbow and a garland of lightning —

Verse 41 (vishnu.5.18.41)

śrīvatsavakṣasaṁ cārukeyūramukuṭojjvalam dadarśa kṛṣṇamakliṣṭapuṇḍarīkāvataṁsakam

his chest marked with Shrivatsa, gleaming with lovely armlets and crown, wearing a spotless lotus for an ear-ornament — Krishna, whom he beheld thus,

Verse 42 (vishnu.5.18.42)

sanandanādyairmunibhiḥ siddhayogairakalmaṣaiḥ vicintyamānaṁ tatrasthairnāsāgranyastalocanaiḥ

upon whom the sinless sages headed by Sanandana, present there, and the perfected yogis, their eyes fixed upon the tip of the nose, were meditating.

Verse 43 (vishnu.5.18.43)

balakṛṣṇau tathākrūraḥ pratyabhijñāya vismitaḥ so'cintayadrathācchīghraṁ kathamatrāgatāviti

Recognizing both Bala and Krishna, Akrura was astonished, and thought: 'How have these two, so swiftly, come here into the water?'

Verse 44 (vishnu.5.18.44)

vivakṣoḥ stambhayāmāsa vācaṁ tasya janārdanaḥ tato niṣkramya salilādrathamabhyāgataḥ punaḥ

Just as he was about to speak, Janardana checked his voice; then, coming forth from the water, he returned once more to the chariot.

Verse 45 (vishnu.5.18.45)

dadarśa tatra caivobhau rathasyoparyadhiṣṭhitau rāmakṛṣṇau yathāpūrvaṁ manuṣyavapuṣānvitau

There he saw both Rama and Krishna seated upon the chariot, once again clothed in their human bodies, just as before.

Verse 46 (vishnu.5.18.46)

nimagnaśca tatastoye sa dadarśa tathaiva tau saṁstūyamānau gandharvamunisiddhamahoragaiḥ

Then, plunging again into the water, he saw the two of them there just as before, praised by gandharvas, sages, siddhas, and the great serpents.

Verse 47 (vishnu.5.18.47)

tato vijñātasadbhāvaḥ sa tu dānapatistadā tuṣṭāva sarvavijñānamayamacyutamīśvaram

Then, having thus understood the true nature of things, that most generous Akrura praised the all-knowing, unfallen Lord —

Verse 48 (vishnu.5.18.48)

sanmātrarūpiṇe'cintyamahimne paramātmane vyāpine naikarūpaikasvarūpāya namo namaḥ

'To you, whose very form is pure existence, of inconceivable glory, the Supreme Self, all-pervading, one in essence though present in countless forms — homage, homage.'

Verse 49 (vishnu.5.18.49)

sattvarūpāya te'cintyahavirbhūtāya te namaḥ namo'vijñātapārāya parāya prakṛteḥ prabho

'To you, whose form is goodness itself, inconceivable, whose very self is the sacrificial offering — homage; homage to you whose limit is unknown, who are beyond primal nature itself, O Lord.'

Verse 50 (vishnu.5.18.50)

bhūtātmā cendriyātmā ca pradhānātmā tathā bhavān ātmā ca paramātmā ca tvamekaḥ pañcadhā sthitaḥ

'You are the Self of the elements, the Self of the senses, and the Self of primal matter; you are the individual Self and the Supreme Self — one alone, yet abiding in five forms.'

Verse 51 (vishnu.5.18.51)

prasīda sarva sarvātman kṣarākṣaramayeśvara brahmaviṣṇuśivādyābhiḥ kalpanābhirudīritaḥ

'Be gracious, O All, O Self of all, O Lord composed of the perishable and imperishable — you who are named through the concepts of Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, and the rest.'

Verse 52 (vishnu.5.18.52)

anākhyeyasvarūpātman anākhyeyaprayojana anākhyeyābhidhānaṁ tvāṁ nato'smi parameśvara

'O Self whose true form cannot be named! O you whose purpose cannot be named! To you, whose very name cannot be named, I bow, O Supreme Lord!'

Verse 53 (vishnu.5.18.53)

na yatra nātha vidyante nāmajātyādikalpanāḥ tad brahma paramaṁ nityamavikāri bhavānajaḥ

'O Lord, where no concept of name, class, or the like exists at all — that eternal, changeless, supreme Brahman is you yourself, O unborn one!'

Verse 54 (vishnu.5.18.54)

na kalpanāmṛte'rthasya sarvvasyādhigamo yataḥ tataḥ kṛṣṇācyutānantaviṣṇusaṁjñābhirīḍyase

'Since without some conceptual name the understanding of anything at all is impossible, it is for this reason that you are praised under the names Krishna, Achyuta, Ananta, and Vishnu.'

Verse 55 (vishnu.5.18.55)

sarvārthastvamaja vikalpanābhiretaddevādyaṁ jagadakhilaṁ tvameva viśvam viśvātmaṁstvamiti vikārabhāvahīnaḥ sarvasmin na hi bhavato'sti kiñcidanyat

'O unborn one, you yourself are the very meaning of all things; through these very concepts this entire universe, beginning with the gods, exists — you yourself are this whole universe manifest. O Self of the universe, thus are you free of all change — in this entire creation there is nothing whatsoever apart from you.'

Verse 56 (vishnu.5.18.56)

tvaṁ brahmā paśupatiraryamā vidhātā dhātā tvaṁ tridaśapatiḥ samīraṇo'gniḥ toyeśo dhanapatirantakastvameko bhinnārthairjagadapi pāsi śaktibhedaiḥ

'You are Brahma, Pashupati, Aryaman, Vidhatri, Dhatri, the Lord of the thirty gods, the wind, and fire; you are the lord of the waters, the lord of wealth, and the ender of all — one alone, yet through your differing powers you sustain this entire universe.'

Verse 57 (vishnu.5.18.57)

viśvaṁ bhavān sṛjati sūryagabhastirūpo viśvaṁ ca te guṇamayo'yamaja prapañcaḥ rūpaṁ paraṁ saditivācakamakṣaraṁ yajjñānātmane sadasate praṇato'smi tasmai

'In the form of the sun's rays you yourself create this universe, and this entire manifold world of qualities is likewise your own form, O unborn one; that supreme, imperishable form called "Being" — to you, whose very nature is knowledge, who are both the existent and non-existent, I bow.'

Verse 58 (vishnu.5.18.58)
