The Conception in Devaki's Womb
Verse 1 (vishnu.5.2.1)
यथोक्तं सा जगद्धात्री देवदेवेन वै तदा । षड़गर्भ-गर्भविन्यासं चक्र चान्यस्य कर्षणम्
yathoktaṁ sā jagaddhātrī devadevena vai tadā ṣar̤agarbha-garbhavinyāsaṁ cakra cānyasya karṣaṇam
Then, just as instructed by the God of gods, the sustainer of the world carried out the placement of the six embryos, and the drawing-forth of the other, seventh one.
Verse 2 (vishnu.5.2.2)
सप्तमे रोहिणी प्राप्ते गर्भेगर्भं ततो हरिः । लोकत्रयोपकाराय देवक्याः प्रविवेश वै
saptame rohiṇī prāpte garbhegarbhaṁ tato hariḥ lokatrayopakārāya devakyāḥ praviveśa vai
"When the seventh embryo had reached Rohini, then Hari, for the benefit of the three worlds, entered the womb of Devaki."
Verse 3 (vishnu.5.2.3)
योगनिद्रा यशोदायास्तस्मिन्नेव ततो दिने । सम्भूता जठरे तदूदू यथोक्तं परमेष्ठिना
yoganidrā yaśodāyāstasminneva tato dine sambhūtā jaṭhare tadūdū yathoktaṁ parameṣṭhinā
"That very same day, Yoganidra likewise came to be conceived in Yashoda's womb, exactly as the Supreme Lord had ordained."
Verse 4 (vishnu.5.2.4)
ततो ग्रहगणाः सम्यक् प्रचचार दिवि द्रिज । विष्णोरंशे बुवं याते ऋतवश्वाभवन् शुभाः
tato grahagaṇāḥ samyak pracacāra divi drija viṣṇoraṁśe buvaṁ yāte ṛtavaśvābhavan śubhāḥ
"O brahmin, then the planets moved auspiciously through the sky, and when Vishnu's portion had come down to earth, the seasons themselves turned favorable."
Verse 5 (vishnu.5.2.5)
न सेहे देवकी द्रष्टुं कश्विदप्यतितेजसा । जाज्वल्यमानां तां दृष्ट्वा मनांसि क्षोभमाययुः
na sehe devakī draṣṭuṁ kaśvidapyatitejasā jājvalyamānāṁ tāṁ dṛṣṭvā manāṁsi kṣobhamāyayuḥ
"No one could bear to look at Devaki, so great was her radiance; seeing her thus ablaze, every mind grew troubled."
Verse 6 (vishnu.5.2.6)
अदृष्टां पुरुषैः स्त्रीभिर्देवकीं देवतागणाः । विभ्राणां वपुषा विष्णुं तुष्टु वुस्तामहर्निशम्
adṛṣṭāṁ puruṣaiḥ strībhirdevakīṁ devatāgaṇāḥ vibhrāṇāṁ vapuṣā viṣṇuṁ tuṣṭu vustāmaharniśam
"Devaki, unseen by men and women alike, bearing Vishnu within her body, was praised day and night by the hosts of the gods."
Verse 7 (vishnu.5.2.7)
प्रकृतिस्त्व परा सुक्ष्मा ब्रह्मगर्भाभवः पुरा । ततो वाणी जगद्धातुर्व्वेदगर्भासि शोभने
prakṛtistva parā sukṣmā brahmagarbhābhavaḥ purā tato vāṇī jagaddhāturvvedagarbhāsi śobhane
"'You are the supreme, subtle Prakriti; long ago you became the womb from which Brahma arose. O radiant one, you are the very speech of the sustainer of the world, the womb of the Veda.'"
Verse 8 (vishnu.5.2.8)
सूर्य्यस्वरूपगर्भासि सृष्टिभूता सनातनि । बीजभूता तु सर्व्वस्य यज्ञभूताभवस्त्रयी
sūryyasvarūpagarbhāsi sṛṣṭibhūtā sanātani bījabhūtā tu sarvvasya yajñabhūtābhavastrayī
"'You are the womb of the sun's own form, O eternal one, you who have become creation itself; you are the seed of all things, and you became the triple Veda in the form of sacrifice.'"
Verse 9 (vishnu.5.2.9)
फलगर्भा त्वमेवेज्या वह्निगर्भा तथारणिः । अदितिर्देवगर्भा त्वं दैत्यगर्भा तथा दितिः
phalagarbhā tvamevejyā vahnigarbhā tathāraṇiḥ aditirdevagarbhā tvaṁ daityagarbhā tathā ditiḥ
"'You, worthy of worship, are the womb of every fruit of action; you are likewise the fire-drill, the womb of fire. You are Aditi, the womb of the gods, and Diti, the womb of the Daityas, as well.'"
Verse 10 (vishnu.5.2.10)
ज्योतूस्त्रा वासरगर्भा त्वं ज्ञानगर्भासि सन्नतिः । नयगर्भा परा नीतिर्लज्जा त्वं प्रश्रयोदूहा
jyotūstrā vāsaragarbhā tvaṁ jñānagarbhāsi sannatiḥ nayagarbhā parā nītirlajjā tvaṁ praśrayodūhā
"'You are moonlight, the womb of the day; you, humility, are the womb of knowledge; you are the highest policy, the womb of right conduct; you are modesty, born of reverence.'"
Verse 11 (vishnu.5.2.11)
कामगर्भा तथेच्छा त्वं तुष्टिः सन्तोषगर्भिणी । मेधा च भोधगर्भासि धैर्य्यगर्भोदूहा धृतिः
kāmagarbhā tathecchā tvaṁ tuṣṭiḥ santoṣagarbhiṇī medhā ca bhodhagarbhāsi dhairyyagarbhodūhā dhṛtiḥ
"'You are longing, the womb of desire; you are contentment, the womb of satisfaction; you are Medha, the womb of understanding; you are Dhriti, born from the womb of steadfastness.'"
Verse 12 (vishnu.5.2.12)
ग्रहर्क्षतारकागर्भा द्यौरस्य खिलहैतुकी । एता विभूतयो देवि । तथान्याश्व सहस्त्रशः
graharkṣatārakāgarbhā dyaurasya khilahaitukī etā vibhūtayo devi | tathānyāśva sahastraśaḥ
"'This sky, the cause of all creation, is the womb of the planets, constellations, and stars. These, O goddess, are your manifestations, and thousands more besides.'"
Verse 13 (vishnu.5.2.13)
तथासङ्खया जगद्धात्रि । साम्प्रतं जठरे तव । समुद्राद्रि-द्रीप-वन-पत्तनभूषणा
tathāsaṅkhayā jagaddhātri | sāmprataṁ jaṭhare tava samudrādri-drīpa-vana-pattanabhūṣaṇā
"'And, O sustainer of the world, countless are your forms. Now within your womb rests He who is adorned with oceans, mountains, islands, forests, and cities —'"
Verse 14 (vishnu.5.2.14)
ग्राम-खर्व्वट-खैटाढया समस्ता पृथिवी शुभे । समस्तवह्नयोऽम्भांसि सकलाश्व समीरणाः
grāma-kharvvaṭa-khaiṭāḍhayā samastā pṛthivī śubhe samastavahnayo'mbhāṁsi sakalāśva samīraṇāḥ
"'— O auspicious one, the whole earth rich with villages, hamlets, and towns; all the fires, the waters, and every wind;'"
Verse 15 (vishnu.5.2.15)
ग्रहर्क्षतारकाचित्रं विमानशतसङूकुलम् । अवकाशमशेषस्य यदूददातिनभःस्थलम्
graharkṣatārakācitraṁ vimānaśatasaṅūkulam avakāśamaśeṣasya yadūdadātinabhaḥsthalam
"'— the sky adorned with wondrous planets, constellations, and stars, crowded with hundreds of celestial cars, which gives room to everything that exists;'"
Verse 16 (vishnu.5.2.16)
भूर्लोकश्व भुवर्लोकः स्वर्लोकोऽथ महर्ज्जनः । तपश्व ब्रह्मलोकश्व ब्रह्माण्डमखिलं शुभे
bhūrlokaśva bhuvarlokaḥ svarloko'tha maharjjanaḥ tapaśva brahmalokaśva brahmāṇḍamakhilaṁ śubhe
"'— Bhurloka, Bhuvarloka, Svarloka, then Maharloka and Janaloka, Tapoloka and Brahmaloka — O auspicious one, this whole cosmic egg;'"
Verse 17 (vishnu.5.2.17)
तदन्तरे स्थिता देवा दैत्य-गन्धर्व्व-चारणाः । महोरगास्तथ यक्षा राक्षसाः प्रेतगुह्यकाः
tadantare sthitā devā daitya-gandharvva-cāraṇāḥ mahoragāstatha yakṣā rākṣasāḥ pretaguhyakāḥ
"'— and, dwelling within it, the gods, Daityas, Gandharvas, Charanas, great serpents, Yakshas, Rakshasas, ghosts, and Guhyakas;'"
Verse 18 (vishnu.5.2.18)
मनुष्याः पशवश्वान्ये ये ज जीवा यशस्विनि । तैरन्तः स्थैरनन्तोऽसौ सर्वेशः सर्व्वभावनः
manuṣyāḥ paśavaśvānye ye ja jīvā yaśasvini tairantaḥ sthairananto'sau sarveśaḥ sarvvabhāvanaḥ
"'— humans, animals, and every other living creature, O glorious one — holding all of these within Him, that infinite Lord of all, the cause of all, now rests in your womb.'"
Verse 19 (vishnu.5.2.19)
रूपकर्म्मखरूपाणि न परिच्छेदगोचरे । यस्याखिलप्रमाणानि सि विष्णुर्गर्भगस्तव
rūpakarmmakharūpāṇi na paricchedagocare yasyākhilapramāṇāni si viṣṇurgarbhagastava
"'He whose forms and deeds lie beyond all limit, whose full measure is beyond the reach of comprehension — that Vishnu is now within your womb.'"
Verse 20 (vishnu.5.2.20)
त्वं खाहा त्वं स्वधा विद्या सुधा त्वं ज्योतिरम्बरे । त्वं स्वाहा त्वं स्वधा विद्या सुधा त्वं ज्योतिरम्बरे । त्वं सर्व्वलोकरक्षार्थमवतीर्णा महीतले
tvaṁ khāhā tvaṁ svadhā vidyā sudhā tvaṁ jyotirambare tvaṁ svāhā tvaṁ svadhā vidyā sudhā tvaṁ jyotirambare tvaṁ sarvvalokarakṣārthamavatīrṇā mahītale
"'You are Svaha, you are Svadha, Vidya, and Sudha; you are the very light in the sky. You are Svaha, you are Svadha, Vidya, and Sudha; you are the very light in the sky. You have descended to the surface of the earth for the protection of every world.'"
Verse 21 (vishnu.5.2.21)
प्रसीद देवि । सर्व्वस्य जगतः शं शुभे । कुरु । प्रीत्या त्वं धारयेशानं धृतं येनाखिलं जगत्
prasīda devi | sarvvasya jagataḥ śaṁ śubhe | kuru prītyā tvaṁ dhārayeśānaṁ dhṛtaṁ yenākhilaṁ jagat
"'Be gracious, O goddess; grant well-being, O auspicious one, to the whole world. Lovingly bear within you that Lord by whom this entire world is upheld.'"
