Amsa 5 · Chapter 30

The Parijata Tree

Chapter 29All chaptersChapter 31

Verse 1 (vishnu.5.30.1)

parāśara uvāca garuḍo vāruṇaṁ chatraṁ tathaiva maṇiparvatam sabhāryaṁ ca hṛṣīkeśaṁ līlayaiva vahan yayau

Parashara said: Garuda, bearing Varuna's umbrella, the jeweled mountain-peak, and Hrishikesha together with his wife, all as if in mere sport, flew onward.

Verse 2 (vishnu.5.30.2)

tataḥ śaṅkham upādhmāsīt svargadvāragato hariḥ upatasthustato devāḥ sārghyapātrā janārdanam

Then, having reached the gate of heaven, Hari blew his conch; and the gods came forward to receive Janardana, bearing vessels of offering.

Verse 3 (vishnu.5.30.3)

sa devairarcitaḥ kṛṣṇo devamāturniveśanam sitābhraśikharākāraṁ praviśya dadṛśe'ditim

Honored by the gods, Krishna entered the dwelling of the mother of the gods, resembling in form a peak of white cloud, and there beheld Aditi.

Verse 4 (vishnu.5.30.4)

Bowing to her, together with Shakra, he presented her with those excellent earrings, and Janardana related to her the destruction of Naraka.

Verse 5 (vishnu.5.30.5)

tataḥ prītā jaganmātā dhātāraṁ jagatāṁ harim tuṣṭāvāditiravyagrā kṛtvā tatpravaṇaṁ manaḥ

Then the mother of the world, Aditi, was pleased, and, undisturbed, her mind wholly given over to him, she praised Hari, the sustainer of the worlds.

Verse 6 (vishnu.5.30.6)

aditiruvāca namaste puṇḍarīkākṣa bhaktānām abhayaṁkara sanātanātman sarvātman bhūtātman bhūtabhāvana

Aditi said: Salutations to you, O lotus-eyed one, giver of fearlessness to your devotees — O eternal self, self of all, self within all beings, source of all beings.

Verse 7 (vishnu.5.30.7)

praṇetā manaso buddherindriyāṇāṁ guṇātmaka triguṇātīta nirdvandva śuddha sarvahṛdisthita

O guide of the mind, the intellect, and the senses, embodiment of the qualities — beyond the three gunas, free of all dualities, pure, dwelling within every heart.

Verse 8 (vishnu.5.30.8)

sitadīrghādiniḥśeṣakalpanāparivarjita janmādibhirasaṁspṛṣṭa svapnādiparivarjita

Free of every notion whatsoever — such as 'white' or 'long'; untouched by birth and its train of changes; beyond sleep and the other states of being.

Verse 9 (vishnu.5.30.9)

saṁdhyā rātriraho bhūmirgaganaṁ vāyurambu ca hutāśano mano buddhirbhūtādistvaṁ tathācyuta

You are the twilight, the night, the day; the earth, the sky, the wind, and the water; the fire, the mind, the intellect, and the very origin of the elements, O Achyuta.

Verse 10 (vishnu.5.30.10)

sṛṣṭisthitivināśānāṁ kartā kartṛpatirbhavān brahmaviṣṇuśivākhyābhirātmamūrtibhirīśvara

You are the doer, and the lord of all doers, of creation, preservation, and destruction, O Lord — through your own forms called Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva.

Verse 11 (vishnu.5.30.11)

devā yakṣāstathā daityā rākṣasāḥ siddhapannagāḥ kūṣmāṇḍāśca piśācāśca gandharvā manujāstathā

Gods, yakshas, and daityas; rakshasas, siddhas, and serpents; kushmandas, pishachas, gandharvas, and men as well —

Verse 12 (vishnu.5.30.12)

paśavo mṛgāḥ pataṁgāśca tathaiva ca sarīsṛpāḥ vṛkṣagulmalatāvallīsamastatṛṇajātayaḥ

cattle, wild beasts, birds, and creeping things as well; trees, shrubs, creepers, vines, and every species of grass —

Verse 13 (vishnu.5.30.13)

sthūlā madhyāstathā sūkṣmāḥ sūkṣmāt sūkṣmatarāśca ye dehabhedā bhavān sarve ye kecit pudgalāśrayāḥ

gross, middling, and subtle, and whatever is subtler still than the subtle — you yourself are all these differentiated bodies, whatever rests upon an individual soul.

Verse 14 (vishnu.5.30.14)

māyā taveyam ajñātaparamārthātimohinī anātmany ātmavijñānaṁ yayā mūḍho nirudhyate

This is your maya — deeply bewildering, keeping the highest truth unknown — by which the deluded man remains bound, mistaking the self for what is not the self.

Verse 15 (vishnu.5.30.15)

ahaṁ mameti bhāvo'tra yat puṁsām abhijāyate saṁsāramāturmāyāyāstavaitan nātha ceṣṭitam

That sense of 'I' and 'mine' which arises in men — this, O Lord, is nothing but the working of your maya, the very mother of worldly bondage.

Verse 16 (vishnu.5.30.16)

yaiḥ svadharmaparairnātha narairārādhito bhavān te taranty akhilām etāṁ māyām ātmavimuktaye

Those men, O Lord, devoted to their own proper duty, by whom you are worshipped — they cross over this entire maya, unto the liberation of the self.

Verse 17 (vishnu.5.30.17)

brahmādyāḥ sakalā devā manuṣyāḥ paśavastathā viṣṇumāyāmahāvartamohāndhatamasā vṛtāḥ

Brahma and all the other gods, men, and cattle as well — all are enveloped in the blinding darkness of delusion, the great whirlpool of Vishnu's maya.

Verse 18 (vishnu.5.30.18)

ārādhya tvām abhīpsante kāmān ātmabhavakṣayam yad ete puruṣā māyā saiveyaṁ bhagavaṁstava

In worshipping you, these men seek after worldly desires rather than the destruction of their own cycle of rebirth — and that they do so, O Blessed Lord, is itself nothing but this very maya of yours.

Verse 19 (vishnu.5.30.19)

mayā tvaṁ putrakāminyā vairipakṣakṣayāya ca ārādhito na mokṣāya māyāvilasitaṁ hi tat

Desiring a son, and for the destruction of my enemies' party, I worshipped you — not for liberation. That too was indeed the play of maya.

Verse 20 (vishnu.5.30.20)

kaupīnācchādanaprāyā vāñchā kalpadrumād api jāyate yad apuṇyānāṁ so'parādhaḥ svadoṣajaḥ

To wish for no more than a loincloth's covering even from the wish-fulfilling tree — that such a paltry desire should arise in the unmeritorious is a fault born purely of their own defect.

Verse 21 (vishnu.5.30.21)

tat prasīdākhilajaganmāyāmohakarāvyaya ajñānaṁ jñānasadbhāvabhūtaṁ bhūteśa nāśaya

Therefore be gracious, O imperishable one, who works delusion upon the whole world through maya; destroy my ignorance, O lord of beings, through the true reality of knowledge.

Verse 22 (vishnu.5.30.22)

namaste cakrahastāya śārṅgahastāya te namaḥ gadāhastāya te viṣṇo śaṅkhahastāya te namaḥ

Salutation to you, discus in hand; salutation to you, the bow Sharnga in hand; salutation to you, O Vishnu, mace in hand; salutation to you, conch in hand.

Verse 23 (vishnu.5.30.23)

This form of yours I behold, marked only by its outward, gross signs; your supreme form I do not know. Be gracious, O Supreme Lord.

Verse 24 (vishnu.5.30.24)

parāśara uvāca adityaivaṁ stuto viṣṇuḥ prahasyāha surāraṇim mātā devi tvam asmākaṁ prasīda varadā bhava

Parashara said: Thus praised by Aditi, Vishnu smiled and said to the mother of the gods: 'O goddess, you are our mother; be gracious, and grant your blessing.'

Verse 25 (vishnu.5.30.25)

aditiruvāca evam astu yathecchā te tvam aśeṣaiḥ surāsuraiḥ ajeyaḥ puruṣavyāghra martyaloke bhaviṣyasi

Aditi said: 'So be it, as you wish. O tiger among men, in the world of mortals you shall be unconquerable by all gods and asuras alike.'

Verse 26 (vishnu.5.30.26)

parāśara uvāca tato'nantaram evāsya śakrāṇīsahitāditim satyabhāmā praṇamyāha prasīdeti punaḥ punaḥ

Parashara said: Then, immediately after, Satyabhama bowed to Aditi, together with Shachi, Indra's wife, and said again and again, 'Be gracious to me.'

Verse 27 (vishnu.5.30.27)

Aditi said: 'By my grace, O fair-browed one, neither old age nor disfigurement shall ever touch you; you shall remain flawless of limb for all time.'

Verse 28 (vishnu.5.30.28)

parāśara uvāca adityā tu kṛtānujño devarājo janārdanam yathāvat pūjayām āsa bahumānapuraḥsaram

Parashara said: Having received Aditi's leave, the king of the gods duly honored Janardana, showing him the highest reverence.

Verse 29 (vishnu.5.30.29)

tato dadarśa kṛṣṇo'pi satyabhāmāsahāyavān devodyānāni hṛdyāni nandanādīni sattama

Then, O worthy one, Krishna, with Satyabhama at his side, beheld the lovely gardens of the gods — Nandana and the rest.

Verse 30 (vishnu.5.30.30)

dadarśa ca sugandhāḍhyaṁ mañjarīpuṣpadhāriṇam śaityāhlādakaraṁ tāmrabālapallavaśobhitam

And he beheld a tree rich with fragrance, laden with clustered blossoms, delightfully cool, resplendent with tender, copper-red shoots —

Verse 31 (vishnu.5.30.31)

mathyamāne'mṛte jātaṁ jātarūpopamatvacam pārijātaṁ jagannāthaḥ keśavaḥ keśisūdanaḥ

— born at the churning of the nectar of immortality, its bark gleaming like gold: the Parijata tree, beheld there by Keshava, Lord of the world, slayer of Keshi.

Verse 32 (vishnu.5.30.32)

taṁ dṛṣṭvā prāha govindaṁ satyabhāmā dvijottama kasmān na dvārakām eṣa nīyate kṛṣṇa pādapaḥ

Seeing it, O foremost of the twice-born, Satyabhama said to Govinda: 'Krishna, why should this tree not be taken to Dvaraka?'

Verse 33 (vishnu.5.30.33)

yadi te tad vacaḥ satyaṁ satyātyarthaṁ priyeti me madgehaniṣkuṭārthāya tad ayaṁ nīyatāṁ taruḥ

'If that word of yours is true — that I, Satya, am exceedingly dear to you — then let this tree be carried off for the garden of my own house.'

Verse 34 (vishnu.5.30.34)

na me jāmbavatī tādṛg abhīṣṭā na ca rukmiṇī satye yathā tvam ity uktaṁ tvayā kṛṣṇāsakṛt priyam

'Neither Jambavati nor Rukmini is as dear to me as you, Satya' — this you, Krishna, have told me lovingly, again and again.

Verse 35 (vishnu.5.30.35)

satyaṁ tad yadi govinda nopacārakṛtaṁ tava tad astu pārijāto'yaṁ mama gehavibhūṣaṇam

'If that is true, Govinda, and not merely a courteous flattery, then let this Parijata become an ornament for my own home.'

Verse 36 (vishnu.5.30.36)

bibhratī pārijātasya keśapakṣeṇa mañjarīm sapatnīnām ahaṁ madhye śobheyam iti kāmaye

'Wearing a spray of Parijata blossoms in my hair, I long to outshine my rival co-wives.'

Verse 37 (vishnu.5.30.37)

parāśara uvāca ity uktaḥ sa prahasyaināṁ pārijātaṁ garutmati āropayām āsa haristam ūcurvanarakṣiṇaḥ

Parashara said: Thus addressed, Hari laughed and had the Parijata loaded onto Garuda; but the guardians of the grove said to him:

Verse 38 (vishnu.5.30.38)

bho śacī devarājasya mahiṣī tatparigraham pārijātaṁ na govinda hartum arhasi pādapam

'O Govinda, this Parijata tree belongs to Shachi, chief queen of the king of the gods — it is not fitting for you to carry it off.'

Verse 39 (vishnu.5.30.39)

śacīvibhūṣaṇārthāya devairamṛtamanthane utpādito'yaṁ na kṣemī gṛhītvainaṁ gamiṣyasi

'It was raised up by the gods at the churning of the nectar for Shachi's own adornment; you shall not go away safely, taking it with you.'

Verse 40 (vishnu.5.30.40)

devarājo mukhaprekṣo yasyāstasyāḥ parigraham mauḍhyāt prārthayase kṣemī gṛhītvainaṁ hi ko vrajet

'You are foolishly seeking to take what belongs to her, on whom the king of the gods himself dotes; who indeed could carry it off and go unharmed?'

Verse 41 (vishnu.5.30.41)

avaśyam asya devendro niṣkṛtiṁ kṛṣṇa yāsyati vajrodyatakaraṁ śakram anuyāsyanti cāmarāḥ

'The king of the gods will certainly take retribution for this, O Krishna; the immortals will follow Shakra with his thunderbolt raised.'

Verse 42 (vishnu.5.30.42)

tad alaṁ sakalairdevairvigraheṇa tavācyuta vipākakaṭu yat karma tan na śaṁsanti paṇḍitāḥ

'So enough, Achyuta, of this quarrel with all the gods together; the wise do not approve an act whose fruit turns out bitter.'

Verse 43 (vishnu.5.30.43)

parāśara uvāca ity ukte tairuvācaitān satyabhāmātikopinī kā śacī pārijātasya ko vā śakraḥ surādhipaḥ

Parashara said: When this was said, Satyabhama, now greatly angered, said to them: 'What claim has Shachi on the Parijata? And who, indeed, is Shakra, lord of the gods?'

Verse 44 (vishnu.5.30.44)

sāmānyaḥ sarvalokānāṁ yady eṣo'mṛtamanthane samutpannaḥ surāḥ kasmād eko gṛhṇāti vāsavaḥ

'If this tree, born at the churning of the nectar, belongs equally to all the worlds, O gods, why should Vasava alone lay claim to it?'

Verse 45 (vishnu.5.30.45)

yathā sudhā yathaivenduryathā śrīrvanarakṣiṇaḥ sāmānyaḥ sarvalokasya pārijātastathā drumaḥ

'O guardians of the grove — just as the nectar of immortality, just as the moon, and just as the goddess Shri, so too this Parijata tree belongs equally to every world.'

Verse 46 (vishnu.5.30.46)

bhartṛbāhumahāgarvād ruṇaddhy enam atho śacī tat kathyatām alaṁ kṣāntyā satyā hārayati drumam

'Out of sheer pride in her husband's arm, Shachi tries to obstruct this — so tell her plainly: enough of restraint. Satya herself is carrying this tree away.'

Verse 47 (vishnu.5.30.47)

kathyatāṁ ca drutaṁ gatvā paulomyā vacanaṁ mama satyabhāmā vadaty etad iti garvoddhatākṣaram

'And go quickly, and tell Shachi, Puloman's daughter, this word of mine, in these proud, ringing terms — that it is Satyabhama who says this.'

Verse 48 (vishnu.5.30.48)

yadi tvaṁ dayitā bharturyadi vaśyaḥ patistava madbharturharato vṛkṣaṁ tat kāraya nivāraṇam

'If you are truly your husband's beloved, if your husband is truly under your sway, then have him stop my own husband, who is carrying off this tree.'

Verse 49 (vishnu.5.30.49)

jānāmi te patiṁ śakraṁ jānāmi tridaśeśvaram pārijātaṁ tathāpy enaṁ mānuṣī hārayāmi te

'I know your husband is Shakra; I know he is lord of the thirty gods. Even so, I, a mere mortal woman, am carrying off this Parijata of yours.'

Verse 50 (vishnu.5.30.50)

parāśara uvāca ity uktā rakṣiṇo gatvā śacyā ūcuryathoditam śacī cotsāhayām āsa tridaśādhipatiṁ patim

Parashara said: Thus instructed, the guardians went and reported the matter to Shachi exactly as it had been said; and Shachi in turn incited her husband, the lord of the thirty gods.

Verse 51 (vishnu.5.30.51)

tataḥ samastadevānāṁ sainyaiḥ parivṛto harim prayayau pārijātārtham indro yodhayituṁ dvija

Then, O twice-born, surrounded by the armies of all the gods, Indra set out to do battle with Hari over the Parijata.

Verse 52 (vishnu.5.30.52)

tataḥ parighanistriṁśagadāśūlavarāyudhāḥ babhūvustridaśāḥ sajjāḥ śakre vajrakare sthite

Then, armed with iron clubs, swords, maces, spears, and other fine weapons, the thirty gods stood ready as Shakra took his place, thunderbolt in hand.

Verse 53 (vishnu.5.30.53)

tato nirīkṣya govindo nāgarājopari sthitam śakraṁ devaparīvāraṁ yuddhāya samupasthitam

Then Govinda, seeing Shakra stationed atop the king of elephants, surrounded by the gods and arrayed for battle —

Verse 54 (vishnu.5.30.54)

cakāra śaṅkhanirghoṣaṁ diśaḥ śabdena pūrayan mumoca ca śaravrātaṁ sahasrāyutasaṁmitam

— blew his conch, filling every direction with the sound, and loosed a torrent of arrows numbering in the thousands upon thousands.

Verse 55 (vishnu.5.30.55)

tato diśo nabhaścaiva dṛṣṭvā śaraśatācitam mumucustridaśāḥ sarve astraśastrāṇy anekaśaḥ

Then, seeing the sky and every quarter filled with hundreds of arrows, all the thirty gods in turn released their weapons and missiles in great numbers.

Verse 56 (vishnu.5.30.56)

ekaikaṁ śastram astraṁ ca devairmuktaṁ sahasradhā ciccheda līlayaiveśo jagatāṁ madhusūdanaḥ

Each single weapon and missile the gods released, Madhusudana, Lord of the worlds, cut into a thousand pieces, as if in mere sport.

Verse 57 (vishnu.5.30.57)

pāśaṁ salilarājasya samākṛṣyoragāśanaḥ cakāra khaṇḍaśaścañcvā bālapannagadehavat

Garuda, devourer of serpents, seized the noose of Varuna, lord of the waters, and tore it to pieces with his beak, as easily as the body of a young snake.

Verse 58 (vishnu.5.30.58)

yamena prahitaṁ daṇḍaṁ gadāvikṣepakhaṇḍitam pṛthivyāṁ pātayām āsa bhagavān devakīsutaḥ

The Blessed Lord, son of Devaki, shattered with a blow of his mace the staff hurled by Yama, and cast it down to the earth.

Verse 59 (vishnu.5.30.59)

śibikāṁ ca dhaneśasya cakreṇa tilaśo vibhuḥ cakāra śaurirarkaṁ ca dṛṣṭidṛṣṭaṁ hataujasam

The mighty Shauri also shattered Kubera's palanquin into fragments with his discus, and, with a mere glance, robbed the sun of its power.

Verse 60 (vishnu.5.30.60)

nīto'gniḥ śataśo bāṇairdrāvitā vasavo diśaḥ cakravicchinnaśūlāgrā rudrā bhuvi nipātitāḥ

Agni was driven off by a hundred arrows; the Vasus were scattered to the four quarters; the Rudras, their spear-points shorn away by the discus, were struck down to the ground.

Verse 61 (vishnu.5.30.61)

sādhyā viśve ca maruto gandharvāścaiva sāyakaiḥ śārṅgeṇa preritairastā vyomni śālmalitūlavat

The Sadhyas, the Vishvedevas, the Maruts, and the Gandharvas as well, struck by arrows loosed from the Sharnga bow, were scattered across the sky like tufts of silk-cotton down.

Verse 62 (vishnu.5.30.62)

garutmān api vaktreṇa pakṣābhyāṁ nakharāṅkuraiḥ bhakṣayaṁstāḍayan devān dārayaṁśca cacāra vai

Garutman too ranged through the gods, biting them with his beak, striking them with his wings, and tearing at them with the tips of his talons.

Verse 63 (vishnu.5.30.63)

tataḥ śarasahasreṇa devendramadhusūdanau parasparaṁ vavarṣāte dhārābhiriva toyadau

Then the king of the gods and Madhusudana rained thousands of arrows upon each other, like two storm-clouds pouring down their torrents.

Verse 64 (vishnu.5.30.64)

airāvatena garuḍo yuyudhe tatra saṁkule devaiḥ samastairyuyudhe śakreṇa ca janārdanaḥ

In that chaos of battle, Garuda fought with Airavata, while Janardana fought against all the gods together, and against Shakra himself.

Verse 65 (vishnu.5.30.65)

chinneṣv aśeṣabāṇeṣu śastreṣv astreṣu ca tvaran jagrāha vāsavo vajraṁ kṛṣṇaścakraṁ sudarśanam

When all their arrows, weapons, and missiles had been cut to pieces, Vasava swiftly seized his thunderbolt, and Krishna his discus Sudarshana.

Verse 66 (vishnu.5.30.66)

tato hāhākṛtaṁ sarvaṁ trailokyaṁ dvijasattama vajracakradharau dṛṣṭvā devarājajanārdanau

Then, O best of the twice-born, the entire threefold world cried out in dismay, seeing the king of the gods and Janardana, thunderbolt and discus raised.

Verse 67 (vishnu.5.30.67)

kṣiptaṁ vajram athendreṇa jagrāha bhagavān hariḥ na mumoca tathā cakraṁ śakraṁ tiṣṭheti cābravīt

Then, when Indra hurled his thunderbolt, the Blessed Hari caught it in his hand, yet did not release his own discus in turn, and said to Shakra, 'Stand still!'

Verse 68 (vishnu.5.30.68)

praṇaṣṭavajraṁ devendraṁ garuḍakṣatavāhanam satyabhāmābravīd vīraṁ palāyanaparāyaṇam

To that hero — the king of the gods, his thunderbolt now lost, his mount wounded by Garuda, and now bent on flight — Satyabhama said:

Verse 69 (vishnu.5.30.69)

trailokyeśvara no yuktaṁ śacībhartuḥ palāyanam pārijātasragābhogā tvām upasthāsyate śacī

'O lord of the three worlds, flight ill becomes Shachi's husband. Shachi, decked in a full garland of Parijata blossoms even so, will still come to attend upon you.'

Verse 70 (vishnu.5.30.70)

kīdṛśaṁ devarājyaṁ te pārijātasragujjvalām apaśyato yathā pūrvaṁ praṇayābhyāgatāṁ śacīm

'What kind of kingship over the gods is yours, if you can no longer even behold Shachi, radiant with her Parijata garland, coming to you in love as she always has?'

Verse 71 (vishnu.5.30.71)

alaṁ śakra prayātena na vrīḍāṁ gantum arhasi nīyatāṁ pārijāto'yaṁ devāḥ santu gatavyathāḥ

'Enough of retreating, Shakra — you need feel no shame. Let this Parijata be carried off; let the gods be free of their distress.'

Verse 72 (vishnu.5.30.72)

patigarvāvalepena bahumānapuraḥsaram na dadarśa gṛhāyātām upacāreṇa māṁ śacī

'Out of sheer pride and arrogance in her husband's greatness, Shachi did not receive me with due honor and courtesy when I came to her house.'

Verse 73 (vishnu.5.30.73)

strītvād agurucittāhaṁ svabhartṛślāghanāparā tataḥ kṛtavatī śakra bhavatā saha vigraham

'Being a woman, my mind not naturally so grave, and intent only on my own husband's glory, it was I, O Shakra, who brought about this quarrel with you.'

Verse 74 (vishnu.5.30.74)

tad alaṁ pārijātena parasvena hṛtena naḥ rūpeṇa garvitā sā tu bhartrā strī kā na garvitā

'So enough, then, of the Parijata — another's property, seized by us. She is proud of her beauty and her husband — but then, what woman is not proud of her own husband?'

Verse 75 (vishnu.5.30.75)

parāśara uvāca ity ukto vai nivavṛte devarājastayā dvija prāha cainām alaṁ caṇḍi sakhi khedātivistaraiḥ

Parashara said: Thus addressed, O twice-born, the king of the gods, pacified by her, turned back, and said to her: 'Enough now, fierce one, my friend — no need for such excessive distress.'

Verse 76 (vishnu.5.30.76)

na cāpi sargasaṁhārasthitikartākhilasya yaḥ jitasya tena me vrīḍā jāyate viśvarūpiṇā

'Nor is there any shame for me in being defeated by him who is the very maker of creation, dissolution, and preservation for all things — he of universal form.'

Verse 77 (vishnu.5.30.77)

yasmiñ jagat sakalam etad anādimadhye yasmād yataśca na bhaviṣyati sarvabhūtāt tenodbhavapralayapālanakāraṇena vrīḍā kathaṁ bhavati devi nirākṛtasya

'He in whom this entire beginningless world abides, from whom it arises and into whom it shall one day dissolve, out of all beings — being defeated by him, the very cause of origination, dissolution, and preservation, how, O goddess, can there be any shame in that?'

Verse 78 (vishnu.5.30.78)

sakalabhuvanasūtirmūrtirasyāṇusūkṣmā viditasakalavedyairjñāyate yasya nānyaiḥ tam ajam akṛtam īśaṁ śāśvataṁ svecchayainaṁ jagadupakṛtimartyaṁ ko vijetuṁ samarthaḥ

'His form, the very source of all the worlds, subtler than the atom, is known only to those who have known all there is to know — and by no others. That unborn, uncreated, eternal Lord, who by his own will has assumed this mortal form for the world's benefit — who could possibly be capable of conquering him?'
