The Slaying of Dvivida

Chapter 35All chaptersChapter 37

Verse 1 (vishnu.5.36.1)

parāśara uvāca maitreya śrūyatāṁ tasya balasya balaśālinaḥ kṛtaṁ yad anyat tenābhūt tad api śrūyatāṁ tvayā

Parashara said: Listen, O Maitreya; let this other deed performed by that mighty Bala also be heard by you.

Verse 2 (vishnu.5.36.2)

narakasyāsurendrasya devapakṣavirodhinaḥ sakhābhavan mahāvīryo dvivido nāma vānaraḥ

There was a friend of Naraka, lord of the asuras and foe of the gods' party — a mighty ape named Dvivida.

Verse 3 (vishnu.5.36.3)

vairānubandhaṁ balavān sa cakāra surān prati narakaṁ hatavān kṛṣṇo devarājena coditaḥ

That powerful ape formed a lasting enmity toward the gods, because Krishna, urged on by their king, had slain Naraka.

Verse 4 (vishnu.5.36.4)

kariṣye sarvadevānāṁ tasmād eṣa pratikriyām yajñavidhvaṁsanaṁ kurvan martyalokakṣayaṁ tathā

'Therefore I shall take revenge on all the gods for this' — so thinking, he set about destroying sacrifices and ruining the mortal world as well.

Verse 5 (vishnu.5.36.5)

tato vidhvaṁsayām āsa yajñān ajñānamohitaḥ bibheda sādhumaryādāṁ kṣayaṁ cakre ca dehinām

Then, deluded by ignorance, he destroyed sacrifices, broke down the bounds set by the virtuous, and brought ruin upon living beings.

Verse 6 (vishnu.5.36.6)

dadāha capalo deśān puragrāmāntarāṇi ca kvacicca parvatākṣepairgrāmādīn samacūrṇayat

That fickle creature burned countries, cities, and villages alike; and in some places he crushed villages and the like by hurling mountains at them.

Verse 7 (vishnu.5.36.7)

śailān utpāṭya toyeṣu mumocāmbunidhau tathā punaścārṇavamadhyasthaḥ kṣobhayām āsa sāgaram

He tore up mountains and hurled them into the waters, into the ocean; and again, standing in the midst of the sea, he churned it into turmoil.

Verse 8 (vishnu.5.36.8)

tena vikṣobhitaścābdhirudvelo dvija jāyate plāvayaṁstīrajān grāmān purādīn ativegavān

Thus stirred up, O twice-born, the ocean overflowed its banks and, with tremendous force, flooded the coastal villages, towns, and other settlements.

Verse 9 (vishnu.5.36.9)

kāmarūpī mahārūpaṁ kṛtvā sasyāny aśeṣataḥ luṭhan bhramaṇasaṁmardaiḥ saṁcūrṇayati vānaraḥ

That ape, able to take any form at will, assuming a vast body, rolling and thrashing about, would grind every last crop to dust beneath him.

Verse 10 (vishnu.5.36.10)

tena viprakṛtaṁ sarvaṁ jagad etad durātmanā niḥsvādhyāyavaṣaṭkāraṁ maitreyāsīt suduḥkhitam

By that evil-souled creature this entire world was thrown into disorder, O Maitreya — deprived of Vedic recitation and sacrificial offerings, and reduced to utter misery.

Verse 11 (vishnu.5.36.11)

ekadā raivatodyāne papau pānaṁ halāyudhaḥ revatī ca mahābhāgā tathaivānyā varastriyaḥ

One day, in the Raivata garden, Halayudha drank wine together with the most blessed Revati and other excellent women.

Verse 12 (vishnu.5.36.12)

upagīyamāno vilasallalanāmaulimadhyagaḥ reme yaduvaraśreṣṭhaḥ kubera iva mandare

As songs were sung to him, surrounded by radiant, lovely women, that foremost of the Yadu heroes made merry, like Kubera at play on Mount Mandara.

Verse 13 (vishnu.5.36.13)

tataḥ sa vānaro'bhyetya gṛhītvā sīriṇo halam musalaṁ ca cakārāsya saṁmukhaṁ saviḍambanam

Then that ape came near, seized the plow-bearer's plow and pestle-mace, and made a mockery of him right before his face.

Verse 14 (vishnu.5.36.14)

tathaiva yoṣitāṁ tāsāṁ jahāsābhimukhaṁ kapiḥ pānapūrṇāṁśca karakāñ cikṣepāhatya vai padā

In the same way, the ape jeered mockingly right in the faces of those women, and, kicking them with his foot, flung down the wine-filled vessels.

Verse 15 (vishnu.5.36.15)

tataḥ kopaparītātmā bhartsayām āsa taṁ balaḥ tathāpi tam avajñāya cakre kilakilādhvanim

Then Bala, overcome with anger, rebuked him sharply; but the ape, paying him no heed, only chattered on mockingly.

Verse 16 (vishnu.5.36.16)

tataḥ samutthāya balo jagṛhe musalaṁ ruṣā so'pi śailaśilāṁ bhīmāṁ jagrāha plavagottamaḥ

Then Bala rose up in fury and seized his pestle-mace; and that foremost of apes in turn seized a fearsome boulder from the mountain.

Verse 17 (vishnu.5.36.17)

cikṣepa ca sa tāṁ kṣiptāṁ musalena sahasradhā bibheda yādavaśreṣṭhaḥ sā papāta mahītale

He hurled it, and that foremost of the Yadavas shattered the flying boulder into a thousand pieces with his pestle-mace; it fell crashing to the ground.

Verse 18 (vishnu.5.36.18)

āpatan musalaṁ cāsau samullaṅghya plavaṁgamaḥ vegenāgamya roṣeṇa talenorasy atāḍayat

And that leaping creature, vaulting over the oncoming pestle-mace, rushing forward in a fury, struck Bala on the chest with the flat of his hand.

Verse 19 (vishnu.5.36.19)

tato balena kopena muṣṭinā mūrdhni tāḍitaḥ papāta rudhirodgārī dvividaḥ kṣīṇajīvitaḥ

Then, struck on the head by Bala's furious fist, Dvivida fell to the ground, spewing blood, his life fast draining away.

Verse 20 (vishnu.5.36.20)

patatā taccharīreṇa gireḥ śṛṅgam aśīryata maitreya śatadhā vajrivajreṇeva hi tāḍitam

As that body fell, O Maitreya, the mountain peak shattered into a hundred pieces, as though struck by Indra's own thunderbolt.

Verse 21 (vishnu.5.36.21)

puṣpavṛṣṭiṁ tato devā rāmasyopari cikṣipuḥ praśaśaṁsustathābhyetya sādhv etat te mahat kṛtam

Then the gods showered flowers down upon Rama, and, drawing near, praised him: 'This great deed of yours is excellent!'

Verse 22 (vishnu.5.36.22)

anena duṣṭakapinā daityapakṣopakāriṇā jagan nirākṛtaṁ vīra diṣṭyā sa kṣayam āgataḥ

'This wicked ape, a friend to the daitya faction, had afflicted the whole world, O hero; by good fortune, he has now met his destruction.'

Verse 23 (vishnu.5.36.23)

parāśara uvāca evaṁvidhāny anekāni baladevasya dhīmataḥ karmāṇy aparimeyāni śeṣasya dharaṇībhṛtaḥ

Parashara said: Many such deeds, beyond measure, were performed by the wise Baladeva, Shesha, the bearer of the earth.
