Amsa 6 · Chapter 6
Self-Study, Yoga, and the King Who Sought a Teacher's Fee
Verse 1 (vishnu.6.6.1)
parāśara uvāca svādhyāyasaṁyamābhyāṁ sa dṛśyate puruṣottamaḥ tatprāptikāraṇaṁ brahma tad etad iti paṭhyate
Parashara said: "That Supreme Person is seen through self-study of scripture together with restraint; the cause that leads to his attainment is what is called Brahman — so it is taught.
Verse 2 (vishnu.6.6.2)
svādhyāyād yogam āsīta yogāt svādhyāyam ācaret svādhyāyayogasaṁpattyā paramātmā prakāśate
From self-study one should proceed into yoga, and from yoga one should return to self-study; through the perfection born of self-study joined with yoga, the Supreme Self is revealed.
Verse 3 (vishnu.6.6.3)
For beholding him, self-study is one eye, and yoga is the other; that one who has become Brahman cannot be seen with the fleshly eye.
Verse 4 (vishnu.6.6.4)
maitreya uvāca bhagavaṁs tam ahaṁ yogaṁ jñātum icchāmi taṁ vada jñāte yatrākhilādhāraṁ paśyeyaṁ parameśvaram
Maitreya said: "Lord, I wish to know that yoga — tell it to me, so that, having known it, I might see the Supreme Lord who is the support of all things."
Verse 5 (vishnu.6.6.5)
parāśara uvāca yathā keśidhvajaḥ prāha khāṇḍikyāya mahātmane janakāya purā yogaṁ tathāhaṁ kathayāmi te
Parashara said: "Just as, long ago, Keshidhvaja declared that yoga to the great-souled Khandikya-Janaka, so shall I now relate it to you.
Verse 6 (vishnu.6.6.6)
maitreya uvāca khāṇḍikyaḥ ko 'bhavad brahman ko vā keśidhvajo 'bhavat kathaṁ tayoś ca saṁvādo yogasaṁbandhavān abhūt
Maitreya said: "Brahmin, who was Khandikya, and who was Keshidhvaja? And how did this dialogue between them, concerning yoga, come to take place?"
Verse 7 (vishnu.6.6.7)
parāśara uvāca dharmadhvajo vai janakas tasya putro 'mitadhvajaḥ kṛtadhvajaś ca nāmnāsīt sadādhyātmaratir nṛpaḥ
Parashara said: "There was a Janaka named Dharmadhvaja; his son was Amitadhvaja; and there was also one named Kritadhvaja, a king ever devoted to spiritual knowledge.
Verse 8 (vishnu.6.6.8)
kṛtadhvajasya putro 'bhūt khyātaḥ keśidhvajo dvija putro 'mitadhvajasyāpi khāṇḍikyajanako 'bhavat
O twice-born, the son of Kritadhvaja was the renowned Keshidhvaja; and the son of Amitadhvaja was Khandikya-Janaka.
Verse 9 (vishnu.6.6.9)
karmamārge 'ti khāṇḍikyaḥ pṛthivyām abhavat kṛtī keśidhvajo 'py atīvāsīd ātmavidyāviśāradaḥ
Khandikya became, on this earth, an accomplished master of the path of ritual action; and Keshidhvaja, in turn, became exceedingly skilled in the knowledge of the Self.
Verse 10 (vishnu.6.6.10)
tāv ubhāv api caivāstāṁ vijigīṣū parasparam keśidhvajena khāṇḍikyaḥ svarājyād avaropitaḥ
Both of these two sought to conquer the other; and Khandikya was driven from his own kingdom by Keshidhvaja.
Verse 11 (vishnu.6.6.11)
purodhasā mantribhiś ca samaveto 'lpasādhanaḥ rājyān nirākṛtaḥ so 'tha durgāraṇyacaro 'bhavat
Accompanied by his family priest and his ministers, with scant resources, driven out from his kingdom, he then became a wanderer in a dense, impenetrable forest.
Verse 12 (vishnu.6.6.12)
iyāja so 'pi subahūn yajñāñ /jñānavyapāśrayaḥ brahmavidyām adhiṣṭhāya tartuṁ mṛtyum avidyayā
He, relying on knowledge and established in the wisdom of Brahman, performed very many sacrifices in order to cross over death through the path of ritual action.
Verse 13 (vishnu.6.6.13)
ekadā vartamānasya yāge yogavidāṁ vara dharmadhenuṁ jaghānograḥ śārdūlo vijane vane
O best of those versed in yoga, once, while Khandikya was engaged in that sacrifice, a fierce tiger, in the lonely forest, killed the sacrificial "dharma-cow."
Verse 14 (vishnu.6.6.14)
Then the king, learning that the cow had been killed by the tiger, asked the officiating priests: "What penance is prescribed for this?"
Verse 15 (vishnu.6.6.15)
te cocur na vayaṁ vidmaḥ kaśeruḥ pṛcchyatām iti kaśerur api tenoktas tatheti prāha bhārgavam
They said: "We do not know; ask Kaseru." Kaseru, when questioned by him, said "so be it" and directed him to Bhargava.
Verse 16 (vishnu.6.6.16)
śunakaṁ pṛccha rājendra nāhaṁ vedmi sa vetsyati sa gatvā tam apṛcchac ca so 'py āha śṛṇu yan mune
"Ask Shunaka, O lord of kings; I myself do not know, but he will know." He went and questioned him, and Shunaka too said: "Hear, O sage, what I have to say —
Verse 17 (vishnu.6.6.17)
na kaśerur na caivāhaṁ na cānyaḥ sāmprataṁ bhuvi vetty eka eva tvacchatruḥ khāṇḍikyo yo jitas tvayā
— neither Kaseru, nor I, nor anyone else now living on this earth knows it; the only one who knows is your very enemy Khandikya, whom you have conquered."
Verse 18 (vishnu.6.6.18)
sa cāha taṁ prayāmy eṣa praṣṭum ātmaripuṁ mune prāpta eva mayā yajño yadi māṁ sa haniṣyati
And he said: "Sage, I will go to ask my own enemy this question; even if he should kill me for it, I shall already have gained the merit of the sacrifice.
Verse 19 (vishnu.6.6.19)
prāyaścittaṁ sa cet pṛṣṭo vadiṣyati ripur mama tataś cāvikalo yāgo muniśreṣṭha bhaviṣyati
But if my enemy, once asked, tells me the penance, then, O foremost of sages, my sacrifice will be rendered whole and flawless."
Verse 20 (vishnu.6.6.20)
parāśara uvāca ity uktvā ratham āruhya kṛṣṇājinadharo nṛpaḥ vanaṁ jagāma yatrāste khāṇḍikyaḥ sa mahāmatiḥ
Parashara said: Having said this, the king, clad in a garment of black antelope skin, mounted his chariot and set out for the forest where the great-minded Khandikya dwelt.
Verse 21 (vishnu.6.6.21)
tam āyāntaṁ samālokya khāṇḍikyo ripum ātmanaḥ provāca krodhatāmrākṣaḥ samāropitakārmukaḥ
Seeing his own enemy approaching, Khandikya, his eyes red with fury, raised his bow and spoke to him.
Verse 22 (vishnu.6.6.22)
khāṇḍikya uvāca kṛṣṇājinaṁ tvaṁ kavacam ābadhyāsmān nihaṁsyasi kṛṣṇājinadhare vetsi na mayi prahariṣyati
Khandikya said: "You have bound on that black antelope skin as armor, meaning to strike us down — thinking that I would never strike a man who wears the deerskin!
Verse 23 (vishnu.6.6.23)
mṛgāṇāṁ vada pṛṣṭheṣu mūḍha kṛṣṇājinaṁ na kim yeṣāṁ mayā tvayā cogrāḥ prahitāḥ śitasāyakāḥ
Fool, tell me — does not the black antelope skin grow on the very backs of the deer at which both you and I have loosed our sharp and terrible arrows?
Verse 24 (vishnu.6.6.24)
sa tvām ahaṁ haniṣyāmi na me jīvan vimokṣyase ātatāyy asi durbuddhe mama rājyaharo ripuḥ
I shall slay you; you will not escape me alive. You are an aggressor, evil-minded one, my enemy who robbed me of my kingdom."
Verse 25 (vishnu.6.6.25)
keśidhvaja uvāca khāṇḍikya saṁśayaṁ praṣṭuṁ bhavantam aham āgataḥ na tvāṁ hantuṁ vicāryaitat kopaṁ bāṇaṁ vimuñca vā
Keshidhvaja said: "Khandikya, I have come to ask you about a doubt of mine, not to kill you. Consider this well — and then release either your anger or your arrow, as you choose."
Verse 26 (vishnu.6.6.26)
parāśara uvāca tataḥ sa mantribhiḥ sārdham ekānte sapurohitaiḥ mantrayām āsa khāṇḍikyaḥ sarvair eva mahāmatiḥ
Parashara said: Then the great-minded Khandikya withdrew apart and took counsel with all his ministers, together with his priest.
Verse 27 (vishnu.6.6.27)
tam ūcur mantriṇo vadhyo ripur eṣa vaśaṁ gataḥ hate tu pṛthivī sarvā tava vaśyā bhaviṣyati
The ministers said to him: "This enemy of yours, now fallen into your power, deserves death; and once he is slain, the whole earth will come under your sway."
Verse 28 (vishnu.6.6.28)
khāṇḍikyaś cāha tān sarvān evam etan na saṁśayaḥ hate tu pṛthivī sarvā mama vaśyā bhaviṣyati
And Khandikya said to them all: "This is true; there is no doubt of it — once he is killed, the whole earth will indeed become mine.
Verse 29 (vishnu.6.6.29)
paralokajayas tasya pṛthivī sakalā mama na hanmi cel lokajayo mama tv asya vasuṁdharā
If I kill him, the conquest of the world beyond will be his, and the whole earth will be mine; but if I do not kill him, the conquest of that world will be mine, while this earth remains his.
Verse 30 (vishnu.6.6.30)
paralokajayo 'nantaḥ svalpakālo mahījayaḥ tasmād enaṁ na haniṣye yat pṛcchati vadāmi tat
The conquest of the world beyond is unending; the conquest of the earth lasts only a short while. Therefore I shall not kill him — whatever he asks, I shall tell him."
Verse 31 (vishnu.6.6.31)
parāśara uvāca tatas tam abhyupetyāha khāṇḍikyajanako ripum praṣṭavyaṁ yat tvayā sarvaṁ tat pṛcchasva vadāmy aham
Parashara said: Then Khandikya-Janaka approached his enemy and said: "Whatever you wish to ask me, ask it now; I shall answer."
Verse 32 (vishnu.6.6.32)
tataḥ sarvaṁ yathāvṛttaṁ dharmadhenuvadhaṁ dvija kathayitvā sa papraccha prāyaścittaṁ hi tadgatam
Then, O twice-born, having related the whole matter exactly as it had happened — the killing of the dharma-cow — he asked him about the penance appropriate to it.
Verse 33 (vishnu.6.6.33)
sa cācaṣṭa yathānyāyaṁ dvija keśidhvajāya tat prāyaścittam aśeṣeṇa yad vai tatra vidhīyate
And, O twice-born, he told Keshidhvaja, in due order and in full, the entire penance that is indeed prescribed for such a case.
Verse 34 (vishnu.6.6.34)
viditārthaḥ sa tenaiva anujñāto mahātmanā yāgabhūmim upāgamya cakre sarvāḥ kriyāḥ kramāt
Having thus learned what he sought, and taking leave of that great soul, he returned to the sacrificial ground and performed all the rites in their proper order.
Verse 35 (vishnu.6.6.35)
krameṇa vidhivad yāgaṁ nītvā so 'vabhṛthāplutaḥ kṛtakṛtyas tato bhūtvā cintayām āsa pārthivaḥ
Having thus duly brought the sacrifice through to completion according to rule, and having bathed in the concluding avabhritha rite, the king, his task now fulfilled, fell to reflecting.
Verse 36 (vishnu.6.6.36)
pūjitā ṛtvijaḥ sarve sadasyā mānitā mayā tathaivārthijano 'py arthair yojito 'bhimatair mayā
"All the officiating priests have been honored by me, and the assembly's members shown due respect; and likewise all who came seeking have been furnished by me with the wealth they desired.
Verse 37 (vishnu.6.6.37)
yathārham atra lokasya mayā sarvaṁ viceṣṭitam aniṣpannakriyaṁ cetas tathāpi mama kiṁ yathā
I have done everything here that was fitting, as the occasion required; and yet my mind feels as though some task remains unfinished — how can that be?"
Verse 38 (vishnu.6.6.38)
Reflecting in this way, the king suddenly remembered: "I have never given Khandikya the teacher's fee that is his due!"
Verse 39 (vishnu.6.6.39)
Maitreya, the king then mounted his chariot once again and set off for that same impenetrable, dense forest where Khandikya dwelt.
Verse 40 (vishnu.6.6.40)
khāṇḍikyo 'pi punar dṛṣṭvā tam āyāntaṁ dhṛtāyudhaḥ tasthau hantuṁ kṛtamatis tam āha sa punar nṛpaḥ
Khandikya too, seeing him coming once more, took up his weapon and stood ready, resolved to kill him; and the king spoke to him again.
Verse 41 (vishnu.6.6.41)
bho nāhaṁ te 'pakārāya prāptaḥ khāṇḍikya mā krudhaḥ guror niṣkrayadānāya mām avehi tvam āgatam
"Khandikya, I have not come to harm you — do not be angry. Know that I have come only to discharge the debt I owe my teacher.
Verse 42 (vishnu.6.6.42)
niṣpādito mayā yāgaḥ samyak tvadupadeśataḥ so 'haṁ te dātum icchāmi vṛṇuṣva gurudakṣiṇām
By your instruction, my sacrifice has been fully and properly accomplished; and now I wish to give you your due — name your teacher's fee."
Verse 43 (vishnu.6.6.43)
parāśara uvāca bhūyaḥ sa mantribhiḥ sārdhaṁ mantrayām āsa pārthivaḥ guruniṣkṛtikāmo 'tra kim ayaṁ prārthyatām iti
Parashara said: Once again the king took counsel with his ministers: "This man wishes to repay his debt to his teacher — what should be asked of him for it?"
Verse 44 (vishnu.6.6.44)
tam ūcur mantriṇo rājyam aśeṣaṁ prārthyatām ayam kṛtibhiḥ prārthyate rājyam anāyāsitasainikaiḥ
The ministers said to him: "Ask him for the whole kingdom; for clever men obtain a kingdom this way without even having to exhaust an army for it."
Verse 45 (vishnu.6.6.45)
prahasya tān āha nṛpaḥ sa khāṇḍikyo mahāmatiḥ svalpakālaṁ mahīrājyaṁ mādṛśaiḥ prārthyate katham
The great-minded King Khandikya laughed and said to them: "How could a man like myself ask for a kingdom of the earth, which lasts only a little while?
Verse 46 (vishnu.6.6.46)
evam etad bhavanto 'tra arthasādhanamantriṇaḥ paramārthaḥ kathaṁ ko 'tra yūyaṁ nātra vicakṣaṇāḥ
This is exactly so; you here are ministers skilled only in the pursuit of worldly advantage — but as to what the true and highest good is in this matter, you are not wise at all."
Verse 47 (vishnu.6.6.47)
parāśara uvāca ity uktvā samupetyainaṁ sa tu keśidhvajaṁ nṛpam uvāca kim avaśyaṁ tvaṁ dadāsi gurudakṣiṇām
Parashara said: Having said this, he approached King Keshidhvaja and said to him: "Will you truly give me whatever I ask as my teacher's fee?"
Verse 48 (vishnu.6.6.48)
bāḍham ity eva tenoktaḥ khāṇḍikyas tam athābravīt bhavān adhyātmavijñānaparamārthavicakṣaṇaḥ
When he had simply answered, "Yes, certainly," Khandikya then said to him: "You are skilled in the highest truth of spiritual knowledge.
Verse 49 (vishnu.6.6.49)
yadi ced dīyate mahyaṁ bhavatā guruniṣkrayaḥ tat kleśapraśamāyālaṁ yat karma tad udīraya
If the teacher's fee is indeed to be given to me by you, then tell me that discipline which is sufficient to bring all suffering to an end."
