Verse 1 (vishnu.6.8.1)
parāśara uvāca ity eṣa kathitaḥ samyak tṛtīyaḥ pratisaṁcaraḥ ātyantiko vimuktir yā layo brahmaṇi śāśvate
Parashara said: "Thus has this third dissolution been fully declared — the absolute dissolution, which is itself liberation, dissolution into the eternal Brahman.
Verse 2 (vishnu.6.8.2)
sargaś ca pratisargaś ca vaṁśo manvantarāṇi ca vaṁśānucaritaṁ caiva bhavato gaditaṁ mayā
Creation and re-creation, the dynasties, the Manvantaras, and likewise the history of those dynasties — all of this has been told to you by me.
Verse 3 (vishnu.6.8.3)
purāṇaṁ vaiṣṇavaṁ tv etat sarvakilbiṣanāśanam viśiṣṭaṁ sarvaśāstrebhyaḥ puruṣārthopapādakam
This Vaishnava Purana destroys every sin; it stands distinguished above all other scriptures, and it establishes the true goals of human life.
Verse 4 (vishnu.6.8.4)
tubhyaṁ yathāvan maitreya proktaṁ śuśrūṣave 'vyayam yad anyad api vaktavyaṁ tat pṛcchādya vadāmi te
Maitreya, to you, eager to hear it, this imperishable Purana has been declared exactly as it should be; if there is anything more to be said, ask it now, and I shall tell you."
Verse 5 (vishnu.6.8.5)
maitreya uvāca bhagavan kathitaṁ sarvaṁ yat pṛṣṭo 'si mayā mune śrutaṁ caitan mayā bhaktyā nānyat praṣṭavyam asti me
Maitreya said: "Lord, O sage, everything I asked you has been told; and I have heard it all with devotion. There is nothing more for me to ask.
Verse 6 (vishnu.6.8.6)
vicchinnāḥ sarvasaṁdehā vaimalyaṁ manasaḥ kṛtam tvatprasādān mayā jñātā utpattisthitisaṁyamāḥ
All my doubts have been severed, and my mind has been made spotless; by your grace I have come to know the origin, the continuance, and the withdrawal of all things.
Verse 7 (vishnu.6.8.7)
jñātaś caturvidho rāśiḥ śaktiś ca trividhā guro vijñātā cāpi kārtsnyena trividhā bhāvabhāvanā
O teacher, I have come to know the fourfold aggregate and the threefold power; and I have also come to understand fully the threefold contemplation of being.
Verse 8 (vishnu.6.8.8)
tvatprasādān mayā jñātaṁ jñeyair anyair alaṁ dvija yathaitad akhilaṁ viṣṇor jagan na vyatiricyate
By your grace, O twice-born, I have come to know that this whole universe is nothing apart from Vishnu — enough now of anything else that remains to be known!
Verse 9 (vishnu.6.8.9)
kṛtārtho 'smy apasaṁdehas tvatprasādān mahāmune varṇadharmādayo dharmā viditā yad aśeṣataḥ
I am fulfilled, great sage, and free of every doubt, by your grace, since the duties of the varnas and the other dharmas have all been made known to me in their entirety.
Verse 10 (vishnu.6.8.10)
pravṛttaṁ ca nivṛttaṁ ca jñātaṁ karma mayākhilam prasīda viprapravara nānyat praṣṭavyam asti me
I have come to know all action, both of engagement and of renunciation; be gracious to me, O foremost of brahmins — there is nothing else left for me to ask."
Verse 11 (vishnu.6.8.11)
yad asya kathanāyāsair yojito 'si mayā guro tat kṣamyatāṁ viśeṣo 'sti na satāṁ putraśiṣyayoḥ
O teacher, if I have burdened you with the labor of relating all this, may that be forgiven me; for among the good, there is no real difference between a son and a disciple."
Verse 12 (vishnu.6.8.12)
parāśara uvāca etat te yan mayākhyātaṁ purāṇaṁ vedasaṁmitam śrute 'smin sarvadoṣotthaḥ pāparāśiḥ praṇaśyati
Parashara said: "This Purana that I have declared to you, equal in authority to the Veda — when it is heard, the whole mass of sin arising from every fault is utterly destroyed.
Verse 13 (vishnu.6.8.13)
sargaś ca pratisargaś ca vaṁśo manvantarāṇi ca vaṁśānucaritaṁ kṛtsnaṁ mayātra tava kīrtitam
Creation and re-creation, the dynasties, the Manvantaras, and the whole history of those dynasties have here been declared by me to you.
Verse 14 (vishnu.6.8.14)
atra devās tathā daityā gandharvoragarākṣasāḥ yakṣā vidyādharāḥ siddhāḥ kathyante 'psarasas tathā
Here the gods and the Daityas, the Gandharvas, the serpents, the Rakshasas, the Yakshas, the Vidyadharas, the Siddhas, and likewise the Apsarases, are all described.
Verse 15 (vishnu.6.8.15)
munayo bhāvitātmānaḥ kathyante tapasānvitāḥ cāturvarṇyaṁ tathā puṁsāṁ viśiṣṭacaritā narāḥ
The sages, their souls purified, endowed with austerity, are described here; and likewise the fourfold order of men, and men of distinguished character.
Verse 16 (vishnu.6.8.16)
puṇyāḥ pradeśā medinyāḥ puṇyā nadyo 'tha sāgarāḥ parvatāś ca mahāpuṇyāś caritāni ca dhīmatām
The sacred regions of the earth, the sacred rivers, the oceans, the mountains of great holiness, and the deeds of the wise —
Verse 17 (vishnu.6.8.17)
varṇadharmādayo dharmā vedaśākhāś ca kṛtsnaśaḥ yeṣāṁ saṁśravaṇāt sadyaḥ sarvapāpaiḥ pramucyate
— the duties of the varnas and the other dharmas, and the branches of the Veda in their entirety — by hearing all of these, one is at once freed from every sin.
Verse 18 (vishnu.6.8.18)
utpattisthitināśānāṁ hetur yo jagato 'vyayaḥ sa sarvabhūtaḥ sarvātmā kathyate bhagavān hariḥ
He who is the imperishable cause of the world's origin, its persistence, and its destruction, who is all beings and the Self of all — he is spoken of as the Lord Hari.
Verse 19 (vishnu.6.8.19)
avaśenāpi yan nāmni kīrtite sarvapātakaiḥ pumān vimucyate sadyaḥ siṁhatrastair mṛgair iva
When his name is uttered, even unintentionally, a man is instantly freed from every sin — even as deer, terrified by a lion, flee at once.
Verse 20 (vishnu.6.8.20)
yan nāmakīrtanaṁ bhaktyā vilāyanam anuttamam maitreyāśeṣapāpānāṁ dhātūnām iva pāvakaḥ
Maitreya, the devoted chanting of his name is the supreme means of dissolving every sin, just as fire dissolves the ores of metal.
Verse 21 (vishnu.6.8.21)
kalikalmaṣam atyugraṁ narakārtipradaṁ nṛṇām prayāti vilayaṁ sadyaḥ sakṛd yatra ca saṁsmṛte
Even the most terrible sin of the Kali age, which brings men to the torment of hell, is dissolved at once, the very moment he is called to mind, even a single time.
Verse 22 (vishnu.6.8.22)
hiraṇyagarbhadevendrarudrādityāśvivāyubhiḥ pāvakair vasubhiḥ sādhyair viśvedevādibhiḥ suraiḥ
By Hiranyagarbha, by Indra the lord of the gods, by Rudra, the Adityas, the Ashvins, the wind-gods, the fire-gods, the Vasus, the Sadhyas, the Vishvedevas, and the other divinities,
Verse 23 (vishnu.6.8.23)

by the Yakshas, the Rakshasas, the serpents, the Siddhas, the Daityas, the Gandharvas, the Danavas, the Apsarases, and likewise by the stars, the constellations, and all the planets,
Verse 24 (vishnu.6.8.24)
saptarṣibhis tathā dhiṣṇyair dhiṣṇyādhipatibhis tathā brāhmaṇādyair manuṣyaiś ca tathaiva paśubhir mṛgaiḥ
and by the Seven Sages, by the celestial spheres and the lords presiding over them, and likewise by men beginning with the brahmins, and by domestic and wild animals as well,
Verse 25 (vishnu.6.8.25)
sarīsṛpair vihaṁgaiś ca palāśādyair mahīruhaiḥ vanādrisāgarasaritpātālaiḥ sadharādibhiḥ
by reptiles and birds, by trees such as the palasha and the rest, by the forests, mountains, oceans, rivers, and netherworlds, together with the earth and all such things,
Verse 26 (vishnu.6.8.26)
śabdādibhiś ca sahitaṁ brahmāṇḍam akhilaṁ dvija meror ivāṇur yasyaitad yanmayaṁ ca dvijottama
O twice-born, and together with sound and the other elements — this entire cosmic egg is, beside him, no more than a speck beside Mount Meru, O best of the twice-born, and consists wholly of him —
Verse 27 (vishnu.6.8.27)
sa sarvaḥ sarvavit sarvasvarūpo rūpavarjitaḥ bhagavān kīrtito viṣṇur atra pāpapraṇāśanaḥ
— that Lord Vishnu, who is all things, who knows all things, whose nature is all form and yet who is free of form, is celebrated here, in this Purana, as the destroyer of sin.
Verse 28 (vishnu.6.8.28)
yad aśvamedhāvabhṛthe snātaḥ prāpnoti vai phalam sakalaṁ tad avāpnoti śrutvaitan munisattama
O foremost of sages, whatever merit a man gains by bathing in the concluding avabhritha rite of a horse-sacrifice, he gains that same merit entirely, merely by hearing this Purana.
Verse 29 (vishnu.6.8.29)
prayāge puṣkare caiva kurukṣetre tathārbude kṛtopavāsaḥ prāpnoti tad asya śravaṇān naraḥ
Whatever a man obtains by observing a fast at Prayaga, at Pushkara, at Kurukshetra, and at Arbuda, he obtains that same merit merely by hearing this.
Verse 30 (vishnu.6.8.30)
yad agnihotre suhute varṣeṇāpnoti vai phalam mahāpuṇyamayaṁ vipra tad asya śravaṇāt sakṛt
O brahmin, whatever great and meritorious fruit a man obtains through a year of duly performed fire-offerings, he obtains that very fruit by hearing this even a single time.
Verse 31 (vishnu.6.8.31)
yaj jyeṣṭhaśukladvādaśyāṁ snātvā vai yamunājale mathurāyāṁ hariṁ dṛṣṭvā prāpnoti paramāṁ gatim
Whatever supreme goal a man attains by bathing in the waters of the Yamuna on the twelfth day of the bright fortnight of Jyeshtha, and beholding Hari at Mathura —
Verse 32 (vishnu.6.8.32)
tad āpnoti phalaṁ samyak samādhānena kīrtanāt purāṇasyāsya viprarṣe keśavārpitamānasaḥ
— that same fruit, O sage among brahmins, he obtains in full through the recitation of this Purana with concentrated mind, his heart offered up to Keshava.
Verse 33 (vishnu.6.8.33)
yamunāsalile snātaḥ puruṣo munisattama jyeṣṭhāmūle 'male pakṣe dvādaśyām upavāsakṛt
O foremost of sages, a man who has bathed in the waters of the Yamuna, and who has kept a fast on the twelfth day of the pure fortnight, under the Jyeshtha asterism,
Verse 34 (vishnu.6.8.34)
samabhyarcyācyutaṁ samyaṅ mathurāyāṁ samāhitaḥ aśvamedhasya yajñasya prāpnoty avikalaṁ phalam
and who, with a concentrated mind, has duly worshipped the imperishable Lord at Mathura, obtains the complete and unimpaired fruit of the horse-sacrifice.
Verse 35 (vishnu.6.8.35)
ālokyarddhim athānyeṣām unnītānāṁ svavaṁśajaiḥ etat kilocur anyeṣām pitaraḥ sapitāmahāḥ
Seeing the prosperity of others, raised up by their own descendants' merit, the fathers and grandfathers of other lineages are said to have spoken thus of these others:
Verse 36 (vishnu.6.8.36)
kaccid asmatkule jātaḥ kālindīsalilāplutaḥ arcayiṣyati govindaṁ mathurāyām upoṣitaḥ
"Will there ever be one born in our own family who will bathe in the waters of the Kalindi, and, having observed a fast, worship Govinda at Mathura,
Verse 37 (vishnu.6.8.37)
jyeṣṭhāmūle site pakṣe yenaivaṁ vayam apy uta parām ṛddhim avāpsyāmas tāritāḥ svakulodbhavaiḥ
under the Jyeshtha asterism, in the bright fortnight — so that we too, delivered by one sprung from our own family, might attain that supreme prosperity?"
Verse 38 (vishnu.6.8.38)
jyeṣṭhāmūle site pakṣe samabhyarcya janārdanam dhanyānāṁ kulajaḥ piṇḍān yamunāyāṁ pradāsyati
"Will one born among the fortunate, having duly worshipped Janardana under the Jyeshtha asterism, in the bright fortnight, offer the funeral rice-balls to us upon the Yamuna,
Verse 39 (vishnu.6.8.39)
tasmin kāle samabhyarcya tatra kṛṣṇaṁ samāhitaḥ dattvā piṇḍaṁ pitṛbhyaś ca yamunāsalilāplutaḥ
worshipping Krishna there at that time with a concentrated mind, and, having bathed in the waters of the Yamuna, offering the funeral rice-ball to his ancestors —
Verse 40 (vishnu.6.8.40)
yad āpnoti naraḥ puṇyaṁ tārayan svapitāmahān śrutvādhyāyaṁ tad āpnoti purāṇasyāsya bhaktimān
— whatever merit a man gains thereby, delivering his own forefathers, a devoted man obtains that same merit simply by hearing this chapter of this Purana."
Verse 41 (vishnu.6.8.41)
etat saṁsārabhīrūṇāṁ paritrāṇam anuttamam duḥsvapnanāśanaṁ nṝṇāṁ sarvaduṣṭanibarhaṇam
This is the supreme refuge for those who fear worldly existence, the destroyer of bad dreams for men, the eradicator of every evil thing.
Verse 42 (vishnu.6.8.42)
idam ārṣaṁ purā prāha ṛbhave kamalodbhavaḥ ṛbhuḥ priyavratāyāha sa ca bhāguraye 'bravīt
Long ago, the lotus-born Brahma declared this ancient teaching to Ribhu; Ribhu told it to Priyavrata; and he in turn told it to Bhaguri.
Verse 43 (vishnu.6.8.43)
bhāguriḥ stambhamitrāya dadhīcāya sa coktavān sārasvatāya tenoktaṁ bhṛguḥ sārasvatād api
Bhaguri told it to Stambhamitra; he told it to Dadhichi; by him it was told to Sarasvata; and Bhrigu received it from Sarasvata as well.
Verse 44 (vishnu.6.8.44)
bhṛguṇā purukutsāya narmadāyai sa coktavān narmadā dhṛtarāṣṭrāya nāgāyāpūraṇāya ca
By Bhrigu it was told to Purukutsa; he told it to Narmada; Narmada told it to the serpent Dhritarashtra, and to Apurana.
Verse 45 (vishnu.6.8.45)
tābhyāṁ ca nāgarājāya proktaṁ vāsukaye dvija vāsukiḥ prāha vatsāya vatsaś cāśvatarāya vai
O twice-born, by those two it was declared to Vasuki, king of the serpents; Vasuki told it to Vatsa; and Vatsa told it to Ashvatara.
Verse 46 (vishnu.6.8.46)
kambalāya ca tenoktam elāpatrāya tena vai
And by him it was told to Kambala, and by him, in turn, to Elapatra.
Verse 47 (vishnu.6.8.47)
Then the sage Vedashiras, having journeyed to the netherworld, obtained this teaching in its entirety, and he gave it over to Pramati.
Verse 48 (vishnu.6.8.48)
dattaṁ pramatinā caiva jātūkarṇāya dhīmate jātūkarṇena caivoktam anyeṣāṁ puṇyaśālinām
And it was given by Pramati to the wise Jatukarna; and by Jatukarna it was declared to other men blessed with merit.
Verse 49 (vishnu.6.8.49)
pulastyavaradānena mamāpy etat smṛtiṁ gatam mayāpi tubhyaṁ maitreya yathāvat kathitaṁ tv idam
By the boon of Pulastya, this teaching came to be held in my own memory as well; and by me too, Maitreya, it has now been declared to you exactly as it stands.
Verse 50 (vishnu.6.8.50)
tvam apy etac chinīkāya kaler ante vadiṣyasi
And you, too, shall declare this teaching to Shinika, at the end of the Kali age.
Verse 51 (vishnu.6.8.51)
ity etat paramaṁ guhyaṁ kalikalmaṣanāśanam yaḥ śṛṇoti naraḥ pāpaiḥ sa sarvair dvija mucyate
Thus, O twice-born, this is a supreme secret, the destroyer of the sin of the Kali age; whatever man hears it is freed from every sin whatsoever.
Verse 52 (vishnu.6.8.52)
pitṛyakṣamanuṣyebhyaḥ samastāmarasaṁstutiḥ kṛtā tena bhaved etad yaḥ śṛṇoti dine dine
By the man who hears it day after day, praise is understood to have been offered to the ancestors, to the Yakshas, to men, and to all the immortal gods.
Verse 53 (vishnu.6.8.53)
kapilādānajanitaṁ puṇyam atyantadurlabham śrutvā tv asya daśādhyāyān avāpnoti na saṁśayaḥ
By hearing ten chapters of this Purana, without any doubt, one obtains the merit — exceedingly difficult to attain — that is born of the gift of a Kapila cow.
Verse 54 (vishnu.6.8.54)
yas tvaitat sakalaṁ śṛṇoti puruṣaḥ kṛtvā manasy acyutaṁ sarvaṁ sarvamayaṁ samastajagatām ādhāram ātmāśrayam jñānaṁ jñeyam anantam ādirahitaṁ sarvāmarāṇāṁ hitaṁ sa prāpnoti na saṁśayo 'sty avikalaṁ yad vājimedhe phalam
But whatever man hears this entire Purana, holding fixed in his mind the imperishable Lord — who is all things, made of all things, the support of all the worlds, his own sole refuge, knowledge itself, the object of knowledge, infinite, without beginning, the well-being of all the immortal gods — that man obtains, without any doubt, the complete and unbroken fruit that is won in the horse-sacrifice.
Verse 55 (vishnu.6.8.55)
yatrādau bhagavāṁś carācaragurur madhye tathānte ca sa brahmajñānamayo 'cyuto 'khilajaganmadhyāntasargaprabhuḥ tac chṛṇvan puruṣaḥ pavitraparamaṁ bhaktyā paṭhan dhārayan prāpnoty asti na tat samastabhuvaneṣv ekāntasiddhir hariḥ
He, the Lord, present at the beginning, the teacher of all moving and unmoving things, present likewise at the middle and at the end, consisting of the knowledge of Brahman, imperishable, the master of the beginning, middle, and dissolution of the entire universe — the man who hears this most sacred Purana, recites it with devotion, and holds it fast in memory, attains that very Hari; there is nothing among all the worlds left for him to attain, for this alone is the perfection reached through single-minded devotion to him.
Verse 56 (vishnu.6.8.56)
yasmin nyastamatir na yāti narakaṁ svargo 'pi yac cintane vighno yatra niveśitātmamanaso brāhmo 'pi loko 'lpakaḥ muktiṁ cetasi yaḥ sthito 'maladhiyāṁ puṁsāṁ dadāty avyayaḥ kiṁ citraṁ yad aghaṁ prayāti vilayaṁ tatrācyute kīrtite
He on whom, once the mind is fixed, one no longer goes to hell; in contemplating whom even heaven becomes an obstacle; for whose sake, in one whose self and mind are surrendered to him, even the world of Brahma seems a small thing; that imperishable Lord, dwelling in the hearts of men of stainless understanding, grants them liberation — what wonder is it, then, that sin should pass into utter dissolution the very instant Achyuta is spoken of?
Verse 57 (vishnu.6.8.57)
yajñair yajñavido yajanti satataṁ yajñeśvaraṁ karmiṇo yaṁ yaṁ brahmamayaṁ parāparaparaṁ dhyāyanti ca jñāninaḥ yaṁ saṁprāpya na jāyate na mriyate no vardhate hīyate naivāsan na ca sad bhavaty ati tataḥ kiṁ vā hareḥ śrūyatām
He whom sacrificers, knowing the rites, ceaselessly worship as the Lord of sacrifice through their offerings; whom the wise, knowers of Brahman, meditate upon as the highest beyond the high; attaining whom, one is neither born nor dies, neither increases nor decreases, is neither unreal nor becomes real — what more, then, is there to hear concerning Hari?
Verse 58 (vishnu.6.8.58)
kavyaṁ yaḥ pitṛrūpadhṛg vidhihutaṁ havyaṁ ca bhuṅkte vibhur devatve bhagavān anādinidhanaḥ svāhāsvadhāsaṁjñitaḥ yasmin brahmaṇi sarvaśaktinilaye mānāni no mānināṁ niṣṭhāyai prabhavanti hanti kaluṣaṁ śrotraṁ sa yāto hariḥ
He who, taking the form of the ancestors, partakes of the offering called "kavya," and who, in his own divine nature, the all-pervading Lord without beginning or end, known under the names Svaha and Svadha, partakes as well of the duly offered "havya" — that Brahman, the abode of every power, in whom the pride of the proud can accomplish nothing toward their own true establishment — that very Hari, the instant he reaches the ear, destroys all its impurity.
Verse 59 (vishnu.6.8.59)
nānto 'sti yasya na ca yasya samudbhavo 'sti vṛddhir na yasya pariṇāmavivarjitasya nāpakṣayaṁ ca samupaity avikalpavastu yas taṁ nato 'smi puruṣottamam īśam īḍyam
To him who has neither end nor origin, who, being beyond all change, undergoes neither growth nor decline, that undivided reality — to him, the Supreme Person, the Lord worthy of all praise, I bow down.
Verse 60 (vishnu.6.8.60)
tasyaiva yo 'nuguṇabhug bahudhaika eva śuddho 'py aśuddha iva mūrtivibhāgabhedaiḥ jñānānvitaḥ sakalatattvavibhūtikartā tasmai nato 'smi puruṣāya sadāvyayāya
To him — who, though one alone, partakes in many ways of the qualities he assumes, who, pure in himself, appears as though impure through the divisions of his differing forms, who, possessed of knowledge, is the maker of the manifold glory of all things — to that ever-imperishable Person, I bow.
Verse 61 (vishnu.6.8.61)
jñānapravṛttiniyamaikyamayāya puṁso bhogapradānapaṭave triguṇātmakāya avyākṛtāya bhavabhāvanakāraṇāya vande svarūpabhavanāya sadājarāya
I praise him who is the very union of knowledge, activity, and the restraint governing them, skilled in bestowing enjoyment upon the Supreme Person, of the nature of the three gunas, undifferentiated, the cause from which worldly existence arises, the very abode of his own true nature, ever ageless.
Verse 62 (vishnu.6.8.62)
vyomānilāgnijalabhūracanāmayāya śabdādibhogyaviṣayopanayakṣamāya puṁsaḥ samastakaraṇair upakārakāya vyaktāya sūkṣmavimalāya sadā nato 'smi
I bow ever to him who consists in the fashioning of ether, wind, fire, water, and earth, who is capable of bringing within reach the objects of enjoyment — sound and the rest — who, through all the instruments of perception, renders service to the Supreme Person, who is manifest, subtle, and stainless.
Verse 63 (vishnu.6.8.63)
iti vividham ajasya yasya rūpaṁ prakṛtiparātmamayaṁ sanātanasya pradiśatu bhagavān aśeṣapuṁsāṁ harir apajanmajarādikāṁ sa siddhim
Thus have I described the manifold form of that unborn, eternal one, whose nature consists of Prakriti and the Supreme Self alike — may the Lord Hari bestow upon all men that perfection which frees them from birth, old age, and all such things.
