Shurpanakha Goads Khara

Shloka 1 (aranya.21.1)

स पुनः पतिताम् दृष्ट्वा क्रोधात् शूर्पणखाम् खरः | उवाच व्यक्तता वाचा ताम् अनर्थ अर्थम् आगताम् ॥ 3.21.1 ॥

sa punaḥ patitām dṛṣṭvā krodhāt śūrpaṇakhām kharaḥ | uvāca vyaktatā vācā tām anartha artham āgatām || 21.1 ||

Seeing Shurpanakha fallen at his feet once again, having returned only to bring calamity, Khara spoke to her in clear words, in anger.

Shloka 2 (aranya.21.2)

मया तु इदानीम् शूराः ते राक्षसा पिशित अशनाः | त्वत् प्रियार्थम् विनिर्दिष्टाः किम् अर्थम् रुद्यते पुनः ॥ 3.21.2 ॥

mayā tu idānīm śūrāḥ te rākṣasā piśita aśanāḥ | tvat priyārtham vinirdiṣṭāḥ kim artham rudyate punaḥ || 21.2 ||

“I have just now commanded those valiant, flesh-eating demons for your sake alone - why then do you weep once more?”

Shloka 3 (aranya.21.3)

भक्ताः चैव अनुरक्ताः च हिताः च मम नित्यशः | हन्यमाना अपि न हन्यन्ते न न कुर्युः वचो मम ॥ 3.21.3 ॥

bhaktāḥ caiva anuraktāḥ ca hitāḥ ca mama nityaśaḥ | hanyamānā api na hanyante na na kuryuḥ vaco mama || 21.3 ||

“They are devoted, loyal, and ever well-wishing toward me; even when struck they cannot be slain, and they would never fail to carry out my command.”

Shloka 4 (aranya.21.4)

किम् एतत् श्रोतुम् इच्छ्हामि कारणम् यत् कृते पुनः | हा नाथ इति विनर्दन्ती सर्पवत् चेष्टसे क्षितौ ॥ 3.21.4 ॥

kim etat śrotum icchhāmi kāraṇam yat kṛte punaḥ | hā nātha iti vinardantī sarpavat ceṣṭase kṣitau || 21.4 ||

“I wish to know the reason why you cry out, ‘Alas, my lord!’ and writhe upon the ground like a serpent.”

Shloka 5 (aranya.21.5)

अनाथ वत् विलपसि किम् नु नाथे मयि स्थिते | उत्तिष्ठोत्तिष्ठ मा मैवम् वैक्लव्यम् त्यज्यताम् इति ॥ 3.21.5 ॥

anātha vat vilapasi kim nu nāthe mayi sthite | uttiṣṭhottiṣṭha mā maivam vaiklavyam tyajyatām iti || 21.5 ||

“Why do you lament like one who has no protector, when I, your protector, stand before you? Rise, rise! Cast off this despair.” So Khara spoke.

Shloka 6 (aranya.21.6)

इति एवम् उक्ता दुर्धर्षा खरेण परिसान्त्विता | विमृज्य नयने स अस्रे खरम् भ्रातरम् अब्रवीत् ॥ 3.21.6 ॥

iti evam uktā durdharṣā khareṇa parisāntvitā | vimṛjya nayane sa asre kharam bhrātaram abravīt || 21.6 ||

Thus consoled and spoken to by Khara, that formidable demoness wiped her tear-filled eyes and said to her brother Khara:

Shloka 7 (aranya.21.7)

अस्मि इदानीम् अहम् प्रप्ता हत श्रवण नासिका | शोणित ओघ परिक्लिन्ना त्वया च परिसमन्विता ॥ 3.21.7 ॥

asmi idānīm aham praptā hata śravaṇa nāsikā | śoṇita ogha pariklinnā tvayā ca parisamanvitā || 21.7 ||

“I came to you just now with my ears and nose cut off, drenched in streams of blood - and you have offered me comfort.”

Shloka 8 (aranya.21.8)

प्रेषिताः च त्वया शूरा राक्षसाः ते चतुर् दश | निहन्तुम् राघवम् घोराम् मत् प्रियार्थम् स लक्ष्मणम् ॥ 3.21.8 ॥

preṣitāḥ ca tvayā śūrā rākṣasāḥ te catur daśa | nihantum rāghavam ghorām mat priyārtham sa lakṣmaṇam || 21.8 ||

“You sent those fourteen valiant demons to kill, for my sake, the fearsome Raghava together with Lakshmana.”

Shloka 9 (aranya.21.9)

ते तु रामेण सामर्षाः शूल पट्टिस पाणयः | समरे निहताः सर्वे सायकैः मर्म भेदिभिः ॥ 3.21.9 ॥

te tu rāmeṇa sāmarṣāḥ śūla paṭṭisa pāṇayaḥ | samare nihatāḥ sarve sāyakaiḥ marma bhedibhiḥ || 21.9 ||

“But all of them, spears and blades in hand and burning with rage, were slain in battle by Rama with arrows that pierced their vital parts.”

Shloka 10 (aranya.21.10)

तान् भूमौ पतितान् दृष्ट्वा क्षणेन एव महाजवान् | रामस्य च महत् कर्म महान् त्रासो अभवन् मम ॥ 3.21.10 ॥

tān bhūmau patitān dṛṣṭvā kṣaṇena eva mahājavān | rāmasya ca mahat karma mahān trāso abhavan mama || 21.10 ||

“Seeing those swift, mighty demons fall to the earth in an instant, and beholding Rama's extraordinary feat, great terror seized me.”

Shloka 11 (aranya.21.11)

सा अस्मि भीता समुद्विग्ना विषण्णा च निशाचर | शरणम् त्वाम् पुनः प्राप्ता सर्वतो भय दर्शिनी ॥ 3.21.11 ॥

sā asmi bhītā samudvignā viṣaṇṇā ca niśācara | śaraṇam tvām punaḥ prāptā sarvato bhaya darśinī || 21.11 ||

“I am frightened, distraught, and despairing, O night-wanderer; seeing peril on every side, I have come again to you for shelter.”

Shloka 12 (aranya.21.12)

विषाद नक्र अध्युषिते परित्रास ऊर्मि मालिनि | किम् माम् न त्रायसे मग्नाम् विपुले शोक सागरे ॥ 3.21.12 ॥

viṣāda nakra adhyuṣite paritrāsa ūrmi mālini | kim mām na trāyase magnām vipule śoka sāgare || 21.12 ||

“Why do you not rescue me, drowning as I am in a vast ocean of sorrow, infested with crocodiles of despair and garlanded with waves of terror?”

Shloka 13 (aranya.21.13)

एते च निहता भूमौ रामेण निशितैः शरैः | ये च मे पदवीम् प्राप्ता राक्षसाः पिशित अशनाः ॥ 3.21.13 ॥

ete ca nihatā bhūmau rāmeṇa niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ | ye ca me padavīm prāptā rākṣasāḥ piśita aśanāḥ || 21.13 ||

“And those flesh-eating demons who followed in my footsteps have likewise been struck down upon the ground by Rama's sharp arrows.”

Shloka 14 (aranya.21.14)

मयि ते यदि अनुक्रोशो यदि रक्षःसु तेषु च | रामेण यदि शक्तिः ते तेजो वा अस्ति निशा चर ॥ 3.21.14 ॥

mayi te yadi anukrośo yadi rakṣaḥsu teṣu ca | rāmeṇa yadi śaktiḥ te tejo vā asti niśā cara || 21.14 ||

“If you feel any compassion for me, and for those demons who perished, and if you still possess the strength or valor to face Rama, O night-wanderer...”

Shloka 15 (aranya.21.15)

दण्डकारण्य निलयम् जहि राक्षस कण्टकम् | यदि रामम् अमित्रघ्नम् न त्वम् अद्य वधिष्यसि ॥ 3.21.15 ॥

daṇḍakāraṇya nilayam jahi rākṣasa kaṇṭakam | yadi rāmam amitraghnam na tvam adya vadhiṣyasi || 21.15 ||

“...then kill that thorn in the side of the demons dwelling in the Dandaka forest! And if you do not slay this destroyer of enemies, Rama, this very day...”

Shloka 16 (aranya.21.16)

तव चैव अग्रतः प्राणान् त्यक्ष्यामि निरपत्रपा | बुद्ध्या अहम् अनुपश्यामि न त्वम् रामस्य संयुगे ॥ 3.21.16 ॥

tava caiva agrataḥ prāṇān tyakṣyāmi nirapatrapā | buddhyā aham anupaśyāmi na tvam rāmasya saṃyuge || 21.16 ||

“...then, shameless as I now am, I shall give up my life before your very eyes. For, weighing it in my mind, I see that you are no match for Rama in battle...”

Shloka 17 (aranya.21.17)

स्थातुम् प्रति मुखे शक्तः स बलो अपि महा रणे | शूरमानी न शूरः त्वम् मिथ्या आरोपित विक्रमः ॥ 3.21.17 ॥

sthātum prati mukhe śaktaḥ sa balo api mahā raṇe | śūramānī na śūraḥ tvam mithyā āropita vikramaḥ || 21.17 ||

“...even with your whole army behind you, in a mighty war. You believe yourself brave, but you are no hero - your courage is nothing but false pretense.”

Shloka 18 (aranya.21.18)

अपयाहि जन स्थानात् त्वरितः सह बान्धवः | जहि त्वम् समरे मूढान् यथा तु कुलपांसन ॥ 3.21.18 ॥

apayāhi jana sthānāt tvaritaḥ saha bāndhavaḥ | jahi tvam samare mūḍhān yathā tu kulapāṃsana || 21.18 ||

“Flee this instant from Janasthana together with your kinsfolk - or else slay them in battle, you fool, disgrace of your lineage!”

Shloka 19 (aranya.21.19)

मानुषौ तौ न शक्नोषि हन्तुम् वै राम लक्ष्मणौ | निःसत्त्वस्य अल्प वीर्यस्य वासः ते कीदृशः तु इह ॥ 3.21.19 ॥

mānuṣau tau na śaknoṣi hantum vai rāma lakṣmaṇau | niḥsattvasya alpa vīryasya vāsaḥ te kīdṛśaḥ tu iha || 21.19 ||

“You are not able to kill those two mere mortals, Rama and Lakshmana - of what use, then, is your dwelling here, feeble and destitute of valor?”

Shloka 20 (aranya.21.20)

राम तेजो अभिभूतो हि त्वम् क्षिप्रम् विनशिष्यसि | स हि तेजः समायुक्तो रामो दशरथात्मजः ॥ 3.21.20 ॥

rāma tejo abhibhūto hi tvam kṣipram vinaśiṣyasi | sa hi tejaḥ samāyukto rāmo daśarathātmajaḥ || 21.20 ||

“Overpowered by Rama's blazing might, you will swiftly perish - for Rama, the son of Dasharatha, is possessed of such splendor.”

Shloka 21 (aranya.21.21)

भ्राता च अस्य महा वीर्यो येन च अस्मि विरूपिता | एवम् विलाप्य बहुशो राक्ष्सी प्रदरोदरी ॥ 3.21.21 ॥

bhrātā ca asya mahā vīryo yena ca asmi virūpitā | evam vilāpya bahuśo rākṣsī pradarodarī || 21.21 ||

“And his brother too, who disfigured me, is a man of immense valor!” Having lamented thus at length, the demoness with the gaping belly...

Shloka 22 (aranya.21.22)

भ्रातुः समीपे शोक आर्ता नष्ट संज्ञा बभूव ह | कराभ्याम् उदरम् हत्वा रुरोद भृश दुःखिता ॥ 3.21.22 ॥

bhrātuḥ samīpe śoka ārtā naṣṭa saṃjñā babhūva ha | karābhyām udaram hatvā ruroda bhṛśa duḥkhitā || 21.22 ||

...overwhelmed with grief before her brother, lost her senses; beating her belly with both her hands, she wept in utter anguish.
