Rama, seeing those terrible portents and perceiving them as harmful to the people, spoke, greatly troubled, these words to Lakshmana.

“Behold, O mighty-armed one, these great portents that have arisen, foreboding the destruction of all beings, as if to bring about the annihilation of all the demons.”
Shloka 4 (aranya.24.4)

sa dhūmāḥ ca śarāḥ sarve mama yuddha abhinanditāḥ | rukma pṛṣṭhāni cāpāni viceṣṭante vicakṣaṇa || 24.5 ||
“O wise one, all my arrows, as though longing for war, seem to smoke, and my gold-backed bows quiver restlessly.”
Shloka 6 (aranya.24.6)
yādṛśā iha kūjanti pakṣiṇo vana cāriṇaḥ | agrato naḥ bhayam prāptam saṃśayo jīvitasya ca || 24.6 ||
“By the way these forest-roaming birds are crying out here, danger surely lies ahead of us, and our very lives are in doubt.”
Shloka 7 (aranya.24.7)

saṃprahāraḥ tu sumahān bhaviṣyati na saṃśayaḥ | ayam ākhyāti me bāhuḥ sphuramāṇo muhur muhuḥ || 24.7 ||
“A great battle will surely take place, there is no doubt; this arm of mine, throbbing again and again, proclaims it to me.”
Shloka 8 (aranya.24.8)
saṃnikarṣe tu naḥ śūra jayam śatroḥ parājayam | suprabham ca prasannam ca tava vaktram hi lakṣyate || 24.8 ||
“And, O valiant one, our victory and the enemy's defeat both draw near; for your face, too, appears bright and serene.”
Shloka 9 (aranya.24.9)
udyatānām hi yuddhārtham yeṣām bhavati lakṣmaṇaḥ | niṣprabham vadanam teṣām bhavati āyuḥ parikṣayaḥ || 24.9 ||
“For, O Lakshmana, of those who set out for battle, if the face loses its luster, their span of life is nearing its end.”
Shloka 10 (aranya.24.10)

“This terrible, mighty roar we hear is that of demons bellowing, and of war-drums beaten by demons of cruel deeds.”
Shloka 11 (aranya.24.11)
anāgata vidhānam tu kartavyam śubham icchhatā | āpadam śaṃkamānena puruṣeṇa vipaścitā || 24.11 ||
“A wise man who desires his own welfare, and who apprehends danger, ought to make provision for what has not yet come to pass.”
Shloka 12 (aranya.24.12)
tasmāt gṛhītvā vaidehīm śara pāṇiḥ dhanur dharaḥ | guhām āśraya śailasya durgām pādapa saṃkulām || 24.12 ||
“Therefore, take Vaidehi with you, bow in hand and arrows ready, and take refuge in an inaccessible mountain cave thick with trees.”
Shloka 13 (aranya.24.13)
pratikūlitum icchhāmi na hi vākyam idam tvayā | śāpito mama pādābhyām gamyatām vatsa mā ciram || 24.13 ||
“I do not wish these words of mine to be opposed by you; I adjure you by my own feet - go, my child, without delay.”
Shloka 14 (aranya.24.14)
tvam hi śūraḥ ca balavān hanyā etān na saṃśayaḥ | svayam nihantum icchhami sarvān eva niśācarān || 24.14 ||
“You are indeed brave and strong, and could surely slay them, without doubt - but I myself wish to destroy all these night-rangers.” Thus Rama spoke to Lakshmana.
Shloka 15 (aranya.24.15)
evam uktaḥ tu rāmeṇa lakṣmaṇaḥ saha sītayā | śarān ādāya cāpam ca guhām durgām samāśrayat || 24.15 ||
Thus addressed by Rama, Lakshmana, taking up his bow and arrows, together with Sita, took shelter in the impassable cave.
Shloka 16 (aranya.24.16)
tasmin praviṣṭe tu guhām lakṣmaṇe saha sītayā | hanta niryuktam iti uktvā rāmaḥ kavacam āviśat || 24.16 ||
When Lakshmana, with Sita, had entered the cave, Rama, saying, ‘Ah, now it is done,’ put on his armor.
Shloka 17 (aranya.24.17)
sa tena agni nikāśena kavacena vibhūṣitaḥ | babhūva rāmaḥ timire mahān agnir iva utthitaḥ || 24.17 ||
Adorned with that armor which blazed like fire, Rama shone in the darkness like a great fire risen up.
Shloka 18 (aranya.24.18)
sa cāpam udyamya mahat śarān ādāya vīryavān | saṃbabhūva avasthitaḥ tatra jyā svanaiḥ pūrayan diśaḥ || 24.18 ||
Raising his great bow and taking up his arrows, the valiant one stood firm there, filling the quarters with the twang of his bowstring.
Shloka 19 (aranya.24.19)
tato devāḥ sagandharvāḥ siddhāḥ ca saha cāraṇaiḥ | sameyuḥ ca mahātmano yuddha darśana kāṃkṣayā || 24.19 ||
Then the gods, together with the gandharvas, the great-souled siddhas, and the charanas, gathered together, eager to witness the battle.
Shloka 20 (aranya.24.20)
ṛṣayaḥ ca mahātmano loke brahmarṣi sattamāḥ | sametya ca ūcuḥ sahitāḥ te anyonyam puṇya karmaṇaḥ || 24.20 ||
And the great sages, foremost among the brahmarshis known in the worlds, having gathered together, those of pious deeds spoke to one another:
Shloka 21 (aranya.24.21)
svasti go brāhmaṇānām ca lokānām ca iti saṃsthitāḥ | jayatām rāghavo yuddhe paulastyān rajanī carān || 24.21 ||
‘May well-being be upon cows and brahmins and upon all the worlds; may Raghava triumph in battle over these night-rangers, the clansmen of Pulastya!’ So they stood, speaking thus.
Shloka 22 (aranya.24.22)
cakra hasto yathā yuddhe sarvān asura puṃgavān | evam uktvā punaḥ pra ūcuḥ ālokya ca parasparam || 24.22 ||
‘-as the discus-bearer once vanquished in battle all the foremost of the asuras.’ Having said this, they spoke again, looking at one another:
Shloka 23 (aranya.24.23)
caturdaśa sahasrāṇi rakṣasām bhīma karmaṇām | ekaḥ ca rāmo dharmātmā katham yuddham bhaviṣyati || 24.23 ||
‘Fourteen thousand demons of terrible deeds, and Rama, righteous, alone - how then will this battle unfold?’
Shloka 24 (aranya.24.24)
iti rājarṣayaḥ siddhāḥ sa gaṇāḥ ca dvijarṣabhāḥ | jāta kautūhalāt tasthur vimānasthāḥ ca devatā || 24.24 ||
Thus spoke the royal sages, the siddhas with their hosts, and the foremost of the twice-born; and the gods, seated in their celestial cars, remained there out of curiosity.
Shloka 25 (aranya.24.25)
āviṣṭam tejasā rāmam saṃgrāma śirasi sthitam | dṛṣṭvā sarvāṇi bhūtāni bhayāt vivyathire tadā || 24.25 ||
Seeing Rama, filled with splendor, standing at the very forefront of the battle, all beings trembled then with fear.
Shloka 26 (aranya.24.26)
rūpam apratimam tasya rāmasya akliṣṭa karmaṇaḥ | babhūva rūpam kruddhasya rudrasya iva mahātmanaḥ || 24.26 ||
The matchless form of Rama, whose deeds are unwearied, became like the form of great-souled Rudra in his fury.
Shloka 27 (aranya.24.27)
iti saṃbhāṣyamāṇo tu deva gaṃdharva cāraṇaiḥ | tato gaṃbhīra nirhrādam ghora carma āyudha dhvajam || 24.27 ||
While he was thus being spoken of by gods, gandharvas, and charanas, then there appeared, with a deep roar, that army terrible with shields, weapons, and banners -
Shloka 28 (aranya.24.28)
anīkam yātudhānānām samantāt pratyadṛśyata | vīra ālāpān visṛjatām anyonyam abhigacchhatām || 24.28 ||
-the army of the man-eating demons, appearing on every side, its warriors shouting battle-cries and rushing upon one another,
Shloka 29 (aranya.24.29)
cāpāni vispharayatām jṛṃbhatām ca api abhīkṣṇaśaḥ | vipraghuṣṭa svanānām ca duṃdubhīm ca api nighnatām || 24.29 ||
-twanging their bows and roaring again and again, their voices resounding loudly, and beating their war-drums.
Shloka 30 (aranya.24.30)
teṣām sutumulaḥ śabdaḥ pūrayāmāsa tad vanam | tena śabdena vitrastāḥ śvāpadā vana cāriṇaḥ || 24.30 ||
Their tumultuous noise filled that forest, and, terrified by that noise, the wild beasts that roamed there...
Shloka 31 (aranya.24.31)
dudruvuḥ yatra niḥśabdam pṛṣṭhato na avalokayan | tat ca anīkam mahāvegam rāmam samanuvartata || 24.31 ||
-fled wherever silence lay, without looking back. And that swift-moving army advanced upon Rama,
Shloka 32 (aranya.24.32)
ghṛta nānā praharaṇam gaṃbhīram sāgaropamam | rāmo api cārayan cakṣuḥ sarvato raṇa paṇḍitaḥ || 24.32 ||
-vast and deep as the ocean, bristling with weapons of every kind. Rama too, skilled in warfare, cast his eyes all about,
Shloka 33 (aranya.24.33)
dadarśa khara sainyam tat yuddha abhimukho gataḥ | vitatya ca dhanur bhīmam tūṇyāḥ ca uddhṛtya sāyakān || 24.33 ||
-and beheld that army of Khara, advancing to meet it in battle; and, stringing his terrible bow and drawing arrows from his quiver,
Shloka 34 (aranya.24.34)
krodham āhārayat tīvram vadhārtham sarva rakṣasām | duṣprekṣyaḥ ca abhavat kruddho yugānta agniḥ iva jvalan || 24.34 ||
-he summoned up fierce anger for the destruction of all the demons, and, enraged, became terrible to behold, blazing like the fire at the end of an age.
Shloka 35 (aranya.24.35)
tam dṛṣṭvā tejasā āviṣṭam prāvyathan vana devatāḥ | tasya ruṣṭsya rūpam tu rāmasya dadṛśe tadā | dakṣasya iva kratum hantum udyatasya pinākinī || 24.35 ||
Seeing him thus filled with splendor, the forest deities trembled; and the form of that enraged Rama then appeared like that of Pinaki, risen up to destroy the sacrifice of Daksha.
Shloka 36 (aranya.24.36)
tat kārmukaiḥ ābharaṇaiḥ rathaiḥ ca tat varmābhiḥ ca agni samāna varṇaiḥ | babhūva sainyam piśita aśaninām sūrya udaye nīlam iva abhra jālam || 24.36 ||
That army of flesh-eaters, with its bows, ornaments, chariots, and armors all the color of fire, became like a mass of dark-blue clouds at sunrise.
