The Battle Begins

Shloka 1 (aranya.25.1)

अवष्टब्ध धनुम् रामम् क्रुद्धम् च रिपु घातिनम् | ददर्श आश्रमम् आगम्य खरः सह पुरःसरैः ॥ 3.25.1 ॥

avaṣṭabdha dhanum rāmam kruddham ca ripu ghātinam | dadarśa āśramam āgamya kharaḥ saha puraḥsaraiḥ || 25.1 ||

Arriving at the hermitage with his vanguard, Khara saw Rama, bow drawn, wrathful, the destroyer of foes.

Shloka 2 (aranya.25.2)

तम् दृष्ट्वा सगुणम् चापम् उद्यम्य खर निःस्वनम् | रामस्य अभिमुखम् सूतम् चोद्यताम् इति अचोदयत् ॥ 3.25.2 ॥

tam dṛṣṭvā saguṇam cāpam udyamya khara niḥsvanam | rāmasya abhimukham sūtam codyatām iti acodayat || 25.2 ||

Seeing him, Khara raised his string-fitted bow, which twanged harshly, and urged his charioteer: ‘Drive on, toward Rama!’

Shloka 3 (aranya.25.3)

स खरस्य आज्ञया सूतः तुरगान् समचोदयत् | यत्र रामो महाबाहुः एको धुन्वन् धनुः स्थितः ॥ 3.25.3 ॥

sa kharasya ājñayā sūtaḥ turagān samacodayat | yatra rāmo mahābāhuḥ eko dhunvan dhanuḥ sthitaḥ || 25.3 ||

At Khara's command, the charioteer drove the horses to where the mighty-armed Rama stood alone, brandishing his bow.

Shloka 4 (aranya.25.4)

तम् तु निष्पतितम् दृष्ट्वा सर्वे ते रजनी चराः | मुंचमाना महानादम् सचिवाः पर्यवारयन् ॥ 3.25.4 ॥

tam tu niṣpatitam dṛṣṭvā sarve te rajanī carāḥ | muṃcamānā mahānādam sacivāḥ paryavārayan || 25.4 ||

Seeing him rush forth, all those night-rangers, his counselors, roaring loudly, surrounded him.

Shloka 5 (aranya.25.5)

स तेषाम् यातुधानानाम् मध्ये रथः गतः खरः | बभूव मध्ये ताराणाम् लोहिताङ्ग इव उदितः ॥ 3.25.5 ॥

sa teṣām yātudhānānām madhye rathaḥ gataḥ kharaḥ | babhūva madhye tārāṇām lohitāṅga iva uditaḥ || 25.5 ||

Khara, riding in his chariot amid those demons, shone like the red planet Mars risen amid the stars.

Shloka 6 (aranya.25.6)

ततः शर सहस्रेन रामम् अप्रतिम ओजसम् | अर्दयित्वाअ महानादम् ननाद समरे खरः ॥ 3.25.6 ॥

tataḥ śara sahasrena rāmam apratima ojasam | ardayitvāa mahānādam nanāda samare kharaḥ || 25.6 ||

Then, having assailed Rama, of matchless might, with a thousand arrows, Khara roared a great battle cry in that combat.

Shloka 7 (aranya.25.7)

ततः तम् भीम धन्वानम् क्रुद्धाः सर्वे निशाचराः | रामम् नाना विधैः शस्त्रैः अभ्यवर्षन्त दुर्जयम् ॥ 3.25.7 ॥

tataḥ tam bhīma dhanvānam kruddhāḥ sarve niśācarāḥ | rāmam nānā vidhaiḥ śastraiḥ abhyavarṣanta durjayam || 25.7 ||

Then all the enraged night-rangers rained down weapons of every kind upon that invincible Rama of terrible bow.

Shloka 8 (aranya.25.8)

मुद्गरैः आयसैः शूलैः प्रासैः खड्गैः परश्वधैः | राक्षसाः समरे रामम् निजघ्नू रोष तत्पराः ॥ 3.25.8 ॥

mudgaraiḥ āyasaiḥ śūlaiḥ prāsaiḥ khaḍgaiḥ paraśvadhaiḥ | rākṣasāḥ samare rāmam nijaghnū roṣa tatparāḥ || 25.8 ||

With iron maces, spears, javelins, swords, and axes, the demons, given over to fury, struck at Rama in that battle.

Shloka 9 (aranya.25.9)

ते वलाहक संकाशा महाकाया महाबलाः | अभ्यधावन्त काकुत्स्थम् रथैः वाजिभिः एव च ॥ 3.25.9 ॥

te valāhaka saṃkāśā mahākāyā mahābalāḥ | abhyadhāvanta kākutstham rathaiḥ vājibhiḥ eva ca || 25.9 ||

Those demons, huge as storm-clouds, immense of body and mighty, rushed upon the son of Kakutstha, some in chariots, some on horses,

Shloka 10 (aranya.25.10)

गजैः पर्वत कूट अभैः रामम् युद्धे जिंघासवः | ते रामे शर वर्षाणि व्यसृजन् रक्षसाम् गणाः ॥ 3.25.10 ॥

gajaiḥ parvata kūṭa abhaiḥ rāmam yuddhe jiṃghāsavaḥ | te rāme śara varṣāṇi vyasṛjan rakṣasām gaṇāḥ || 25.10 ||

-and some on elephants like mountain-peaks, eager to slay Rama in battle. Those hosts of demons let loose showers of arrows upon Rama,

Shloka 11 (aranya.25.11)

शैलेन्द्रम् इव धाराभिर् वर्षमाणा महाधनाः | सर्वैः परिवृतो रामो राक्षसैः कॄरदर्शिनैः ॥ 3.25.11 ॥

śailendram iva dhārābhir varṣamāṇā mahādhanāḥ | sarvaiḥ parivṛto rāmo rākṣasaiḥ kṝradarśinaiḥ || 25.11 ||

-as great rain-clouds pour their torrents upon a mountain-king. Surrounded on every side by those grim-visaged demons, Rama...

तिथिषु इव महादेवो वृतः पारिषदाम् गणैः | तानि मुक्तानि शस्त्राणि यातुधानैः स राघवः ॥ 3.25.12 ॥

tithiṣu iva mahādevo vṛtaḥ pāriṣadām gaṇaiḥ | tāni muktāni śastrāṇi yātudhānaiḥ sa rāghavaḥ || 25.12 ||

-appeared like Mahadeva on certain sacred days, surrounded by the hosts of his attendants. Those weapons hurled by the demons, that Raghava...

Shloka 13 (aranya.25.13)

प्रतिजग्राह विशिखैः नदि ओघान् इव सागरः | स तैः प्रहरणैः घोरैः भिन्न गात्रो न विव्यथे ॥ 3.25.13 ॥

pratijagrāha viśikhaiḥ nadi oghān iva sāgaraḥ | sa taiḥ praharaṇaiḥ ghoraiḥ bhinna gātro na vivyathe || 25.13 ||

-intercepted with his own arrows, as the ocean receives the floods of rivers. Though his limbs were gashed by those terrible weapons, he was not shaken,

Shloka 14 (aranya.25.14)

रामः प्रदीप्तैर् बहुभिर् वज्रैर् इव महा अचलः | स विद्धः क्षतज दिग्धः सर्व गात्रेषु राघवः ॥ 3.25.14 ॥

rāmaḥ pradīptair bahubhir vajrair iva mahā acalaḥ | sa viddhaḥ kṣataja digdhaḥ sarva gātreṣu rāghavaḥ || 25.14 ||

-like a great mountain unmoved by many blazing thunderbolts. Pierced and smeared with blood over all his limbs, that Raghava...

Shloka 15 (aranya.25.15)

बभूव रामः सन्ध्य अभ्रैः दिवाकर इव आवृतः | विषेदुर् देव गन्धर्वाः सिद्धाः च परम ऋषयः ॥ 3.25.15 ॥

babhūva rāmaḥ sandhya abhraiḥ divākara iva āvṛtaḥ | viṣedur deva gandharvāḥ siddhāḥ ca parama ṛṣayaḥ || 25.15 ||

-appeared like the sun wrapped in the clouds of evening twilight. The gods, gandharvas, siddhas, and the great sages grew despondent,

Shloka 16 (aranya.25.16)

एकम् सहस्रैः बहुभिः तदा दृष्ट्वा समावृतम् | ततो रामः तु सुसंक्रुद्धो मण्डली कृत कार्मुकः ॥ 3.25.16 ॥

ekam sahasraiḥ bahubhiḥ tadā dṛṣṭvā samāvṛtam | tato rāmaḥ tu susaṃkruddho maṇḍalī kṛta kārmukaḥ || 25.16 ||

-seeing him, alone, then surrounded by so many thousands. Then Rama, greatly enraged, curved his bow into a full circle,

Shloka 17 (aranya.25.17)

ससर्ज निशितान् बाणान् शतशः अथ सहस्रशः | दुरवारान् दुर्विषहान् कालपाश उपमान् रणे ॥ 3.25.17 ॥

sasarja niśitān bāṇān śataśaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ | duravārān durviṣahān kālapāśa upamān raṇe || 25.17 ||

-and loosed sharp arrows by the hundred, then by the thousand - irresistible, unbearable, like the very noose of Death in that battle.

Shloka 18 (aranya.25.18)

मुमोच लीलया रामः कंकपत्रान् कांचन भूषणान् | ते शराः शत्रु सैन्येषु मुक्ता रामेण लीलया ॥ 3.25.18 ॥

mumoca līlayā rāmaḥ kaṃkapatrān kāṃcana bhūṣaṇān | te śarāḥ śatru sainyeṣu muktā rāmeṇa līlayā || 25.18 ||

Rama loosed, as if in play, arrows fledged with kanka-feathers and adorned with gold. Those arrows, loosed playfully by Rama into the enemy ranks,

Shloka 19 (aranya.25.19)

आददू रक्षसाम् प्राणान् पाशाः कालकृता इव | भित्त्वा राक्षस देहान् ताम् ते शरा रुधिर आप्लुताः ॥ 3.25.19 ॥

ādadū rakṣasām prāṇān pāśāḥ kālakṛtā iva | bhittvā rākṣasa dehān tām te śarā rudhira āplutāḥ || 25.19 ||

-seized the lives of the demons like the very snares fashioned by Death. Piercing the bodies of the demons, those arrows, drenched in blood,

Shloka 20 (aranya.25.20)

अंतरिक्ष गता रेजुः दीप्त अग्नि सम तेजसः | असंख्येयाः तु रामस्य सायकाः चाप मण्डलात् ॥ 3.25.20 ॥

aṃtarikṣa gatā rejuḥ dīpta agni sama tejasaḥ | asaṃkhyeyāḥ tu rāmasya sāyakāḥ cāpa maṇḍalāt || 25.20 ||

-shone in the sky with a brilliance like blazing fire. Innumerable were the arrows that flew from the circle of Rama's bow,

Shloka 21 (aranya.25.21)

विनिष्पेतुः अतीव उग्रा रक्षः प्राण अपहारिणः | तैः धनूंषि ध्वज अग्राणि चर्माणि च शिरांसि च ॥ 3.25.21 ॥

viniṣpetuḥ atīva ugrā rakṣaḥ prāṇa apahāriṇaḥ | taiḥ dhanūṃṣi dhvaja agrāṇi carmāṇi ca śirāṃsi ca || 25.21 ||

-flew forth, exceedingly fierce, snatching away the lives of the demons. With those arrows he sheared bows, banner-tops, shields, and heads,

Shloka 22 (aranya.25.22)

बहून् स हस्त आभरणान् ऊरून् करि कर उपमान् | चिछ्हेद रामः समरे शतशः अथ सहस्रशः ॥ 3.25.22 ॥

bahūn sa hasta ābharaṇān ūrūn kari kara upamān | cichheda rāmaḥ samare śataśaḥ atha sahasraśaḥ || 25.22 ||

-and many bejeweled arms, and thighs like the trunks of elephants, Rama cut down in that battle, by the hundred and then by the thousand.

Shloka 23 (aranya.25.23)

हयान् कांचन सन्नाहान् रथ युक्तान् स सारथीन् | गजाम् च स गज आरोहान् स हयान् सारधिनः तदा ॥ 3.25.23 ॥

hayān kāṃcana sannāhān ratha yuktān sa sārathīn | gajām ca sa gaja ārohān sa hayān sāradhinaḥ tadā || 25.23 ||

Horses harnessed in gold, yoked to chariots, together with their charioteers; elephants with their riders; and horses with their riders...

Shloka 24 (aranya.25.24)

चिछ्हिदुः बिभिदुः च एव राम बाणा गुण च्युताः | पदातीन् समरे हत्वा हि अनयत् यम सदनम् ॥ 3.25.24 ॥

cichhiduḥ bibhiduḥ ca eva rāma bāṇā guṇa cyutāḥ | padātīn samare hatvā hi anayat yama sadanam || 25.24 ||

-Rama's arrows, loosed from the bowstring, cut down and pierced through; and, slaying the foot-soldiers in battle, he sent them to the abode of Yama.

Shloka 25 (aranya.25.25)

ततो नालीक नाराचैः तीक्ष्ण अग्रैः विकर्णिभिः | भीमम् आर्त स्वरम् चक्रुः छ्हिद्यमाना निशाचराः ॥ 3.25.25 ॥

tato nālīka nārācaiḥ tīkṣṇa agraiḥ vikarṇibhiḥ | bhīmam ārta svaram cakruḥ chhidyamānā niśācarāḥ || 25.25 ||

Then, torn apart by broad-headed arrows, iron shafts, and sharp, barbed points, the night-rangers screamed in terrible anguish.

Shloka 26 (aranya.25.26)

तत् सैन्यम् निशितैः बाणैः अर्दितम् मर्म भेदिभिः | न रामेण सुखम् लेभे शुष्कम् वनम् इव अग्निना ॥ 3.25.26 ॥

tat sainyam niśitaiḥ bāṇaiḥ arditam marma bhedibhiḥ | na rāmeṇa sukham lebhe śuṣkam vanam iva agninā || 25.26 ||

That army, tormented by Rama's sharp, vital-piercing arrows, found no relief - like a dry forest consumed by fire.

Shloka 27 (aranya.25.27)

केचिद् भीम बलाः शूराः प्रासान् शूलान् परश्वधान् | चिक्षिपुः परम क्रुद्धा रामाय रजनीचराः ॥ 3.25.27 ॥

kecid bhīma balāḥ śūrāḥ prāsān śūlān paraśvadhān | cikṣipuḥ parama kruddhā rāmāya rajanīcarāḥ || 25.27 ||

Some of the night-rangers, of terrible strength and valiant, in utmost fury hurled javelins, tridents, and axes at Rama.

Shloka 28 (aranya.25.28)

तेषाम् बाणैः महाबाहुः शस्त्राणि आवार्य वीर्यवान् | जहार समरे प्राणान् चिच्छ्हेद च शिरो धरान् ॥ 3.25.28 ॥

teṣām bāṇaiḥ mahābāhuḥ śastrāṇi āvārya vīryavān | jahāra samare prāṇān cicchheda ca śiro dharān || 25.28 ||

The mighty-armed and valiant Rama, warding off their weapons with his arrows, took their lives in that battle and severed the heads from their necks.

Shloka 29 (aranya.25.29)

ते छ्हिन्न शिरसः पेतुः छ्हिन्न चर्म शरासनाः | सुपर्ण वात विक्षिप्ता जगत्याम् पादपा यथा ॥ 3.25.29 ॥

te chhinna śirasaḥ petuḥ chhinna carma śarāsanāḥ | suparṇa vāta vikṣiptā jagatyām pādapā yathā || 25.29 ||

They fell, their heads severed, their shields and bows cut down, like trees scattered upon the earth by the wind raised by Garuda's wings.

Shloka 30 (aranya.25.30)

अवशिष्टाः च ये तत्र विषण्णाः ते निशाचराः | खरम् एव अभ्यधावन्त शरणार्थम् शर आहताः ॥ 3.25.30 ॥

avaśiṣṭāḥ ca ye tatra viṣaṇṇāḥ te niśācarāḥ | kharam eva abhyadhāvanta śaraṇārtham śara āhatāḥ || 25.30 ||

Those night-rangers who remained, dejected and struck by arrows, fled for refuge to Khara alone.

Shloka 31 (aranya.25.31)

तान् सर्वान् धनुर् आदाय समाश्वास्य च दूषणः | अभ्यधावत सुसंक्रुद्धः क्रुद्धः क्रुद्ध इव अन्तकः ॥ 3.25.31 ॥

tān sarvān dhanur ādāya samāśvāsya ca dūṣaṇaḥ | abhyadhāvata susaṃkruddhaḥ kruddhaḥ kruddha iva antakaḥ || 25.31 ||

Taking up his bow and comforting them all, Dushana, greatly enraged, rushed forward against the enraged Rama, like Death himself enraged.

Shloka 32 (aranya.25.32)

निवृत्ताः तु पुनः सर्वे दूषण आश्रय निर्भयाः | रामम् एव अभ्यधावन्त साल ताल शिल आयुधाः ॥ 3.25.32 ॥

nivṛttāḥ tu punaḥ sarve dūṣaṇa āśraya nirbhayāḥ | rāmam eva abhyadhāvanta sāla tāla śila āyudhāḥ || 25.32 ||

Then, emboldened by Dushana's shelter, all of them turned back once more and rushed upon Rama alone, wielding sala and tala trees and boulders as weapons.

Shloka 33 (aranya.25.33)

शूल मुद्गर हस्ताः च पाश हस्ता महाबलाः | सृजन्तः शर वर्षाणि शस्त्र वर्षाणि संयुगे ॥ 3.25.33 ॥

śūla mudgara hastāḥ ca pāśa hastā mahābalāḥ | sṛjantaḥ śara varṣāṇi śastra varṣāṇi saṃyuge || 25.33 ||

Those mighty demons, tridents and maces in hand, nooses in hand, poured down showers of arrows and showers of weapons in that battle,

Shloka 34 (aranya.25.34)

द्रुम वर्षाणि मुंचन्तः शिला वर्षाणि राक्षसाः | तद् बभूव अद्भुतम् युद्धम् तुमुलम् रोम हर्षणम् ॥ 3.25.34 ॥

druma varṣāṇi muṃcantaḥ śilā varṣāṇi rākṣasāḥ | tad babhūva adbhutam yuddham tumulam roma harṣaṇam || 25.34 ||

-and hurled showers of trees and showers of boulders. That battle became wondrous, tumultuous, and hair-raising,

Shloka 35 (aranya.25.35)

रामस्य अस्य महाघोरम् पुनः तेषाम् च रक्षसाम् | ते समन्तात् अभिक्रुद्धा राघवम् पुनर् आर्दयन् ॥ 3.25.35 ॥

rāmasya asya mahāghoram punaḥ teṣām ca rakṣasām | te samantāt abhikruddhā rāghavam punar ārdayan || 25.35 ||

-most terrible, between this Rama and those demons once more. Enraged on every side, they again tormented Raghava.

Shloka 36 (aranya.25.36)

ततः सर्वा दिशो दृष्ट्वा प्रदिशाः च समावृताः | राक्षसैः सर्वतः प्राप्तैः शर वर्षाभिः आवृतः ॥ 3.25.36 ॥

tataḥ sarvā diśo dṛṣṭvā pradiśāḥ ca samāvṛtāḥ | rākṣasaiḥ sarvataḥ prāptaiḥ śara varṣābhiḥ āvṛtaḥ || 25.36 ||

Then, seeing all the quarters and intermediate quarters filled, covered on every side by demons who had converged there, showering arrows,

Shloka 37 (aranya.25.37)

स कृत्वा भैरवम् नादम् अस्त्रम् परम भास्वरम् | समयोजयत् गान्धर्वम् राक्षसेषु महाबलः ॥ 3.25.37 ॥

sa kṛtvā bhairavam nādam astram parama bhāsvaram | samayojayat gāndharvam rākṣaseṣu mahābalaḥ || 25.37 ||

-that mighty Rama, uttering a terrifying roar, invoked against the demons the supremely brilliant Gandharva weapon.

Shloka 38 (aranya.25.38)

ततः शर सहस्राणि निर्ययुः चाप मण्डलात् | सर्वा दश दिशो बानैः आपूर्यन्त समागतैः ॥ 3.25.38 ॥

tataḥ śara sahasrāṇi niryayuḥ cāpa maṇḍalāt | sarvā daśa diśo bānaiḥ āpūryanta samāgataiḥ || 25.38 ||

Then thousands of arrows sprang forth from the circle of his bow, and all the ten directions were filled with the arrows that converged there.

Shloka 39 (aranya.25.39)

न आददानाम् शरान् घोरान् विमुंचंतम् शर उत्तमान् | विकर्षमाणम् पश्यन्ति राक्षसाः ते शर आर्दिताः ॥ 3.25.39 ॥

na ādadānām śarān ghorān vimuṃcaṃtam śara uttamān | vikarṣamāṇam paśyanti rākṣasāḥ te śara ārditāḥ || 25.39 ||

Those demons, tormented by the arrows, could not even perceive him drawing the terrible shafts, or fitting the finest arrows, or loosing them, or drawing his bow.

Shloka 40 (aranya.25.40)

शर अन्धकारम् आकाशम् आवृणोत् स दिवाकरम् | बभूव अवस्थितो रामः प्रक्षिपन् इव तान् शरान् ॥ 3.25.40 ॥

śara andhakāram ākāśam āvṛṇot sa divākaram | babhūva avasthito rāmaḥ prakṣipan iva tān śarān || 25.40 ||

A darkness of arrows enveloped the sky, the sun itself, while Rama stood firm, ceaselessly hurling forth those arrows.

Shloka 41 (aranya.25.41)

युगपत् पतमानैः च युगपच्च हतैः भ्रिशम् | युगपत् पतितैः चैव विकीर्णा वसुधा अभवत् ॥ 3.25.41 ॥

yugapat patamānaiḥ ca yugapacca hataiḥ bhriśam | yugapat patitaiḥ caiva vikīrṇā vasudhā abhavat || 25.41 ||

The earth became strewn far and wide with demons falling all at once, struck down all at once, and lying fallen all at once.

Shloka 42 (aranya.25.42)

निहताः पतिताः क्षीणा च्छ्हिन्न भिन्न विदारिताः | तत्र तत्र स्म दृश्यन्ते राक्षसाः ते सहस्रशः ॥ 3.25.42 ॥

nihatāḥ patitāḥ kṣīṇā cchhinna bhinna vidāritāḥ | tatra tatra sma dṛśyante rākṣasāḥ te sahasraśaḥ || 25.42 ||

Slain, fallen, spent, cut, cleft, and torn apart - thousands of demons were seen lying there in every direction.

Shloka 43 (aranya.25.43)

स उष्णीषैः उत्तम अंगैः च स अंगदैः बाहुभिः तथा | ऊरुभिः बाहुभिः च्छ्हिन्नैः नाना रूपैः विभूषणैः ॥ 3.25.43 ॥

sa uṣṇīṣaiḥ uttama aṃgaiḥ ca sa aṃgadaiḥ bāhubhiḥ tathā | ūrubhiḥ bāhubhiḥ cchhinnaiḥ nānā rūpaiḥ vibhūṣaṇaiḥ || 25.43 ||

-heads still crowned with turbans, arms still bearing their armlets, and thighs and arms severed, adorned with ornaments of every kind,

हयैः च द्विप मुख्यैः च रथैः भिन्नैः अनेकशः | चामर व्यजनैः छ्हत्रैः ध्वजैः नाना विधैः अपि ॥ 3.25.44 ॥

hayaiḥ ca dvipa mukhyaiḥ ca rathaiḥ bhinnaiḥ anekaśaḥ | cāmara vyajanaiḥ chhatraiḥ dhvajaiḥ nānā vidhaiḥ api || 25.44 ||

-together with horses, splendid elephants, and shattered chariots in great numbers, and with fly-whisks, fans, parasols, and banners of many kinds,

Shloka 45 (aranya.25.45)

रामेण बाण अभिहतैः विच्छ्हिन्नैः शूल पट्टिशैः | खड्गैः खण्डीकृतैः प्रासैः विकीर्णैः च पश्वधैः ॥ 3.25.45 ॥

rāmeṇa bāṇa abhihataiḥ vicchhinnaiḥ śūla paṭṭiśaiḥ | khaḍgaiḥ khaṇḍīkṛtaiḥ prāsaiḥ vikīrṇaiḥ ca paśvadhaiḥ || 25.45 ||

-struck down by Rama's arrows: tridents and pattisha-blades shattered, swords broken to pieces, javelins and axes scattered about,

Shloka 46 (aranya.25.46)

चूणिताभिः शिलाभिः च शरैः चित्रैः अनेकशः | विच्छ्हिन्नैः समरे भूमिः विस्तीर्णा आभूत् भयंकरा ॥ 3.25.46 ॥

cūṇitābhiḥ śilābhiḥ ca śaraiḥ citraiḥ anekaśaḥ | vicchhinnaiḥ samare bhūmiḥ vistīrṇā ābhūt bhayaṃkarā || 25.46 ||

-and with pulverized boulders and countless splintered, richly wrought arrows - with all this the wide battlefield became a fearsome sight.

Shloka 47 (aranya.25.47)

तान् दृष्ट्वा निहतान् सर्वे रक्षसाः परम आतुराः | न तत्र चलितुम् शक्ता रामम् पर पुरंजयम् ॥ 3.25.47 ॥

tān dṛṣṭvā nihatān sarve rakṣasāḥ parama āturāḥ | na tatra calitum śaktā rāmam para puraṃjayam || 25.47 ||

Seeing all those demons slain, the surviving demons, utterly distressed, were unable even to move against Rama, the conqueror of enemy citadels.
