Mareecha's Counsel of Caution

Sarga 36All sargasSarga 38

Shloka 1 (aranya.37.1)

tat śrutvā rākṣasendrasya vākyam vākya viśāradaḥ | pratyuvāca mahāprājño mārīco rākṣaseśvaram || 37.1 ||

On hearing these words of the lord of demons, the eloquent and highly wise Mareecha replied to the ruler of the rakshasas.

Shloka 2 (aranya.37.2)

sulabhāḥ puruṣā rājan satatam priya vādinaḥ | apriyasya ca pathyasya vaktā śrotā ca durlabhaḥ || 37.2 ||

"O king, those who ever speak pleasant words are easy enough to find; but one who speaks an unpleasant yet wholesome truth, and one willing to hear it, are both hard to come by.

Shloka 3 (aranya.37.3)

na nūnam budhyase rāmam mahāvīryam guṇa unnatam | ayukta cāraḥ capalo mahendra varuṇa upamam || 37.3 ||

Being careless with your spies and fickle by nature, you surely fail to recognize Rama for what he is — supremely valorous, exalted in virtue, and equal in majesty to Mahendra and Varuna.

Shloka 4 (aranya.37.4)

api svasti bhavet tāta sarveṣām bhuvi rakṣasām | api rāmo na saṃkruddhaḥ kuryāt lokam arākṣasam || 37.4 ||

My boy, will there truly be well-being for all the demons on this earth? Might not an enraged Rama render this whole world free of rakshasas!

Shloka 5 (aranya.37.5)

Has this daughter of Janaka perhaps been born only to bring your life to its end? Might not this Sita become the cause of some great calamity!

Shloka 6 (aranya.37.6)

api tvām īśvaram prāpya kāma vṛttam niraṃkuśam | na vinaśyet purī laṃkā tvayā saha sa rākṣasā || 37.6 ||

With you as its lord — self-willed and unrestrained as you are — might not this city of Lanka, together with its demons, perish along with you!

Shloka 7 (aranya.37.7)

tvat vidhaḥ kāma vṛtto hi duḥśīlaḥ pāpa maṃtritaḥ | ātmānam sva janam rāṣṭram sa rājā hanti durmatiḥ || 37.7 ||

A king such as you — self-willed, ill-natured, counselled by sin, and depraved in judgment — truly ruins himself, his own people, and his own kingdom.

Shloka 8 (aranya.37.8)

na ca pitrā parityakto na amaryādaḥ kathaṃcana | na lubdho na ca duḥśīlo na ca kṣatriya pāṃsanaḥ || 37.8 ||

Rama was not cast out by his father, nor is he in any way unseemly; he is neither greedy, nor ill-natured, nor a disgrace to his Kshatriya lineage.

Shloka 9 (aranya.37.9)

na ca dharma guṇair hīnaiḥ kausalyā ānaṃda vardhanaḥ | na ca tīkṣṇo hi bhūtānām sarva bhūta hite rataḥ || 37.9 ||

Kausalya's delight, he lacks none of the virtues of righteousness, nor is he harsh toward any being; rather he delights always in the welfare of all creatures.

Shloka 10 (aranya.37.10)

vaṃcitam pitaram dṛṣṭvā kaikeyyā satya vādinam | kariṣyāmi iti dharmātmā tataḥ pravrajito vanam || 37.10 ||

Seeing his truth-speaking father entrapped by Kaikeyi, the righteous Rama resolved, 'I shall make his word come true,' and so set out from Ayodhya into the forest.

Shloka 11 (aranya.37.11)

kaikeyyāḥ priya kāmārtham pitur daśarathasya ca | hitvā rājyam ca bhogān ca praviṣṭo daṇḍakā vanam || 37.11 ||

For the sake of Kaikeyi's cherished wish and his father Dasharatha's word, he gave up his kingdom and every comfort, and entered the Dandaka forest.

Shloka 12 (aranya.37.12)

na rāmaḥ karkaśaḥ tāta na avidvān na ajita indriyaḥ | anṛtam na śrutam caiva naiva tvam vaktum arhasi || 37.12 ||

My boy, Rama is neither harsh, nor unlearned, nor a slave to his senses. This is untrue, unheard-of talk, and it does not become you to speak so.

Shloka 13 (aranya.37.13)

rāmo vigrahavān dharmaḥ sādhuḥ satya parākramaḥ | rājā sarvasya lokasya devānām iva vāsavaḥ || 37.13 ||

Rama is righteousness given form, a virtuous man whose valour is truth itself; he is king of the entire world, as Vasava is among the gods.

Shloka 14 (aranya.37.14)

katham nu tasya vaidehīm rakṣitām svena tejasā | icchase prasabham hartum prabhām iva vivasvataḥ || 37.14 ||

How can you wish to seize by force that Vaidehi, guarded as she is by his own splendour — as though you sought to snatch the very radiance from the sun!

Shloka 15 (aranya.37.15)

śara arciṣam anādhṛṣyam cāpa khaḍga indhanam raṇe | rāma agnim sahasā dīptam na praveṣṭum tvam arhasi || 37.15 ||

Into that unassailable fire called Rama — its flames are arrows, its fuel bow and sword, blazing up of a sudden in battle — you ought not to venture.

Shloka 16 (aranya.37.16)

dhanur vyādita dīpta āsyam śara arciṣam amarṣaṇam | cāpa bāṇa dharam tīkṣṇam śatru senā apahāriṇam || 37.16 ||

His stretched bow a gaping, blazing mouth, his arrows its tongues of flame — insufferable, wielding bow and shaft, that fierce annihilator of enemy hosts —

Shloka 17 (aranya.37.17)

rājyam sukham ca saṃtyajya jīvitam ca iṣṭam ātmanaḥ | na ati āsādayitum tāta rāma aṃtakam iha arhasi || 37.17 ||

my boy, casting aside your kingdom, your comforts, and your own dear life, you ought not to venture so very near that Rama, who is death itself.

Shloka 18 (aranya.37.18)

aprameyam hi tat tejo yasya sā janakātmajā | na tvam samarthaḥ tām hartum rāma cāpa āśrayām vane || 37.18 ||

That daughter of Janaka belongs to one whose splendour is beyond measure; you have no power to abduct her, sheltered as she is in the forest under Rama's bow.

Shloka 19 (aranya.37.19)

tasya vai nara siṃhasya siṃha uraskasya bhāminī | prāṇebhyo api priyatarā bhāryā nityam anuvratā || 37.19 ||

That radiant lady is the wife of that lion-chested man-lion, dearer to him than his own life, and she has forever vowed to follow him alone.

Shloka 20 (aranya.37.20)

na sā dharṣayitum śakyā maithilī ojasvinaḥ priyā | dīptasya iva huta āśasya śikhā sītā sumadhyamā || 37.20 ||

That slender-waisted Maithili, beloved of the mighty Rama, cannot be violated — no more than one can lay hold of the flame-tip of a blazing sacrificial fire.

Shloka 21 (aranya.37.21)

kim udyamam vyartham imam kṛtvā te rākṣasādhipa | dṛṣṭaḥ cet tvam raṇe tena tat aṃtam tava jīvitam || 37.21 ||

O lord of the rakshasas, what will you gain by this futile endeavour? If in battle he but looks upon you, that very glance will be the end of your life.

Shloka 22 (aranya.37.22)

jīvitam ca sukham caiva rājyam caiva sudurlabham | yat icchasi ciram bhoktum mā kṛthā rāma vipriyam || 37.22 ||

If you wish to enjoy your life, your comforts, and this kingdom so hard to attain, for a long time yet, then do nothing displeasing to Rama.

Shloka 23 (aranya.37.23)

sa sarvaiḥ sacivaiḥ sārdham vibhīṣaṇa puraskṛtaiḥ | maṃtrayitvā tu dharmiṣṭhaiḥ kṛtvā niścayam ātmanaḥ | doṣāṇām ca guṇānām ca saṃpradhārya bala abalam || 37.23 ||

You should take counsel with all your righteous ministers, Vibhishana foremost among them, then arrive at your own resolve, carefully weighing the faults and merits on both sides, as well as your own strength and weakness,

Shloka 24 (aranya.37.24)

ātmanaḥ ca balam jñātvā rāghavasya ca tattvataḥ | hitam hi tava niścitya kṣamam tvam kartum arhasi || 37.24 ||

and, knowing in truth both your own strength and Raghava's, having determined what is truly good for you, you should then act only as is fitting.

Shloka 25 (aranya.37.25)

aham tu manye tava na kṣamam raṇe samāgamam kosala rāja sūnunā | idam hi bhūyaḥ śṛṇu vākyam uttamam kṣamam ca yuktam ca niśācara adhipa || 37.25 ||

O lord of the night-rangers, I for my part hold that a confrontation with the prince of Kosala in battle is not fitting for you. So hear once again this counsel of mine, which is excellent, proper, and sound."
