Mareecha's Tale of the Boy Rama
Shloka 1 (aranya.38.1)
kadācit api aham vīryāt paryaṭan pṛthivīm imām | balam nāga sahasrasya dhārayan parvatopamaḥ || 38.1 ||
"There was a time when I too, in the pride of my might, roamed this earth, bearing the strength of a thousand elephants, my form massive as a mountain.
Shloka 2 (aranya.38.2)
nīla jīmūta saṃkāśaḥ tapta kāṃcana kuṇḍalaḥ | bhayam lokasya janayan kirīṭī parigha āyudhaḥ || 38.2 ||
Dark as a rain-cloud, wearing ear-rings of burnished gold, crowned, and armed with an iron mace, I spread terror through the world,
Shloka 3 (aranya.38.3)
vyacaram daṇḍaka araṇyam ṛṣi māṃsāni bhakṣayan | viśvāmitro atha dharmātmā mat vitrasto mahāmuniḥ || 38.3 ||
as I roamed the Dandaka forest, devouring the flesh of sages. Then the righteous great sage Vishvamitra, thoroughly terrified of me,
Shloka 4 (aranya.38.4)
svayam gatvā daśaratham narendram idam abravīt | ayam rakṣatu mām rāmaḥ parva kāle samāhitaḥ || 38.4 ||
went in person to King Dasharatha and said to him, 'Let this Rama, staying alert, guard me at the time of my sacrificial rite,
Shloka 5 (aranya.38.5)
mārīcāt me bhayam ghoram samutpannam nareśvara | iti evam ukto dharmātmā rājā daśarathaḥ tadā || 38.5 ||
for, O lord of men, a terrible fear of Mareecha has arisen in me.' When he was thus addressed, the righteous King Dasharatha
Shloka 6 (aranya.38.6)
pratyuvāca mahābhāgam viśvāmitram mahāmunim | ūna dvādaśa varṣo ayam akṛta astraḥ ca rāghavaḥ || 38.6 ||
replied to that most fortunate great sage Vishvamitra: 'This Raghava is not yet twelve years of age, and is untrained in the use of weapons;
Shloka 7 (aranya.38.7)
kāmam tu mama yat sainyam mayā saha gamiṣyati | balena caturaṃgeṇa svayam etya niśācaram || 38.7 ||
if you wish, whatever army I possess will march along with me; I myself will go there with my fourfold forces,
Shloka 8 (aranya.38.8)
evam uktaḥ sa tu munī rājānam idam abravīt | rāmāt na anyat balam loke paryāptam tasya rakṣasaḥ || 38.8 ||
and slay your enemy, O foremost of sages, exactly as you wish.' When thus addressed, that sage in turn said this to the king —
Shloka 9 (aranya.38.9)
rāmāt na anyat balam loke paryāptam tasya rakṣasaḥ | devatānām api bhavān samareṣu abhipālakaḥ || 38.9 ||
'No force in the world other than Rama's can match that demon. You, O king, have been the protector of the very gods in their wars;
Shloka 10 (aranya.38.10)
āsīt tava kṛte karma triloka viditam nṛpa | kāmam asti mahat sainyam tiṣṭatu iha paraṃtapa || 38.10 ||
the deeds you have performed, O king, are renowned throughout the three worlds. Let your great army, however remarkable, remain right here, O scorcher of foes;
Shloka 11 (aranya.38.11)
bālo api eṣa mahātejāḥ samarthaḥ tasya nigrahe | gamiṣye rāmam ādāya svasti te astu paraṃtapaḥ || 38.11 ||
this greatly resplendent boy alone is capable of subduing him. I shall go taking Rama with me alone; may good fortune attend you, scorcher of foes.'
Shloka 12 (aranya.38.12)
iti evam uktvā sa muniḥ tam ādāya nṛpātmajam | jagāma parama prīto viśvāmitraḥ svam āśramam || 38.12 ||
Having said this, the sage Vishvamitra, greatly pleased, took the prince along with him and went to his own hermitage.
Shloka 13 (aranya.38.13)
tam tadā daṇḍakāraṇye yajñam uddiśya dīkṣitam | babhūva upasthito rāmaḥ citram visphārayan dhanuḥ || 38.13 ||
Then, in the Dandaka forest, Rama stood in attendance upon Vishvamitra, who had entered upon the vow of that sacrifice, twanging his wondrous bow.
Shloka 14 (aranya.38.14)
ajāta vyaṃjanaḥ śrīmān bālaḥ śyāmaḥ śubhekṣaṇaḥ | eka vastra dharo dhanvī śikhī kanaka mālayā || 38.14 ||
That splendid boy, whose beard had not yet appeared, dark-hued and lovely-eyed, clad in a single garment, bow in hand, his hair-lock and golden pendant in place,
Shloka 15 (aranya.38.15)
śobhayan daṇḍakāraṇyam dīptena svena tejasā | adṛśyata tadā rāmo bāla candra iva uditaḥ || 38.15 ||
irradiated the Dandaka forest with his own splendour; at that time Rama appeared like the newly risen crescent moon.
Shloka 16 (aranya.38.16)
tato aham megha saṃkāśaḥ tapta kāṃcana kuṇḍalaḥ | balī datta varo darpāt ājagāma āśrama aṃtaram || 38.16 ||
Then I, dark as a rain-cloud, wearing ear-rings of burnished gold, mighty and fortified by a boon, arrogantly made my way into the interior of that hermitage.
Shloka 17 (aranya.38.17)
tena dṛṣṭaḥ praviṣṭo aham sahasā eva udyata āyudhaḥ | mām tu dṛṣṭvā dhanuḥ sajyam asambhrāntaḥ cakāra ha || 38.17 ||
No sooner had I entered with my weapon raised than he at once caught sight of me; and seeing me, quite unperturbed, he strung his bow.
Shloka 18 (aranya.38.18)
avajānan aham mohāt bālo ayam iti rāghavam | viśvāmitrasya tām vedim abhyadhāvam kṛta tvaraḥ || 38.18 ||
Foolishly disdaining that Raghava, thinking 'he is but a boy,' I rushed in haste toward Vishvamitra's sacrificial altar.
Shloka 19 (aranya.38.19)
tena muktaḥ tato bāṇaḥ śitaḥ śatru nibarhaṇaḥ | tena aham tāḍitaḥ kṣiptaḥ samudre śata yojane || 38.19 ||
Then he loosed a sharp arrow, one that destroys the enemy; struck by it, I was hurled a hundred yojanas away into the ocean.
Shloka 20 (aranya.38.20)
na icchatā tāta mām hantum tadā vīreṇa rakṣitaḥ | rāmasya śara vegena nirasto bhrānta cetanaḥ || 38.20 ||
That valiant one had no wish to kill me, dear boy, and so I was spared, but the force of Rama's arrow left my mind reeling and my senses scattered.
Shloka 21 (aranya.38.21)
pātito aham tadā tena gaṃbhīre sāgara aṃbhasi | prāpya saṃjñām cirāt tāta laṃkām prati gataḥ purīm || 38.21 ||
Thus flung by him into the deep waters of the ocean, I regained my senses only after a long while, dear boy, and made my way back to the city of Lanka.
Shloka 22 (aranya.38.22)
evam asmi tadā muktaḥ sahāyāḥ te nipātitāḥ | akṛta astreṇa rāmeṇa bālena akliṣṭa karmaṇā || 38.22 ||
Thus, though untrained in weaponry, that boy Rama, whose deeds come to him effortlessly, spared me even as he struck down my companions.
Shloka 23 (aranya.38.23)
tat mayā vāryamāṇaḥ tvam yadi rāmeṇa vigraham | kariṣyasi āpadam ghorām kṣipram prāpya na śiṣyasi || 38.23 ||
Therefore, if despite my warning you provoke a quarrel with Rama, you will soon meet with a terrible calamity and perish.
Shloka 24 (aranya.38.24)
krīḍā rati vidhijñānām samāja utsava śālinām | rakṣasām caiva saṃtāpam anartham ca āhariṣyasi || 38.24 ||
Upon these demons too, skilled in sport and pleasure and given to festive gatherings, you will bring only grief and ruin.
Shloka 25 (aranya.38.25)
harmya prāsāda saṃbādhām nānā ratna vibhūuṣitām | drakṣyasi tvam purīm laṃkām vinaṣṭām maithilī kṛte || 38.25 ||
This city of Lanka, crowded with mansions and palaces and adorned with every kind of gem, you will see laid waste, all for the sake of that Maithili.
Shloka 26 (aranya.38.26)
akurvanto api pāpāni śucayaḥ pāpa saṃśrayāt | para pāpaiḥ vinaśyanti matsyā nāga hrade yathā || 38.26 ||
Even the sinless, though they commit no sin themselves, perish through their association with sinners — as fish perish for another's fault in a lake infested with serpents.
Shloka 27 (aranya.38.27)
divya caṃdana digdha aṃgān divya ābharaṇa bhūṣitān | drakṣyasi abhihatān bhūmau tava doṣāt tu rākṣasān || 38.27 ||
Those demons, their limbs anointed with divine sandal-paste and adorned with divine ornaments, you will see struck down upon the ground, all because of your own transgression.
Shloka 28 (aranya.38.28)
hṛta dārān sa dārān ca daśa vidravato diśaḥ | hata śeṣān aśaraṇān drakṣyasi tvam niśācarān || 38.28 ||
Those night-rangers who survive the slaughter, some bereft of their wives and some still with them, but all without a protector, you will see fleeing in all ten directions.
Shloka 29 (aranya.38.29)
śara jāla parikṣiptām agni jvālā samāvṛtām | pradagdha bhavanām laṃkām drakṣyasi tvam asaṃśayam || 38.29 ||
Encircled by a mesh of arrows, wrapped in tongues of fire, its buildings burnt to ash — such, without doubt, you will see Lanka become.
Shloka 30 (aranya.38.30)
para dāra abhimarṣāt tu na anayat pāpa taram mahat | pramadānām sahasrāṇi tava rājan parigrahe || 38.30 ||
O king, there is no sin graver than laying hands on another man's wife — and this when you yourself already possess thousands of women.
Shloka 31 (aranya.38.31)
bhava sva dāra nirataḥ sva kulam rakṣa rākṣasa | mānam vṛddhim ca rājyam ca jīvitam ca iṣṭam ātmanaḥ || 38.31 ||
Be content, demon, with your own wives, and guard your own race — and thereby guard your honour, your prosperity, your kingdom, and your own dear life.
Shloka 32 (aranya.38.32)
kalatrāṇi ca saumyāni mitra vargam tathaiva ca | yadi icchasi ciram bhoktum mā kṛthā rāma vipriyam || 38.32 ||
If you wish to enjoy for long your gentle wives and the company of your friends, then do nothing displeasing to Rama.
Shloka 33 (aranya.38.33)
nivāryamāṇaḥ suhṛdā mayā bhṛśam prasahya sītām yadi dharṣayiṣyasi | gamiṣyasi kṣīṇa balaḥ sa bāndhavo yama kṣayam rāma śara ātta jīvitaḥ || 38.33 ||
"If, despite my earnest and repeated warning as your true well-wisher, you forcibly violate Sita, your strength will waste away, and with your life taken by Rama's arrow, you will go, along with your kinsmen, to the realm of Yama." Thus spoke Mareecha to Ravana.
