Maricha's Final Warning
Shloka 1 (aranya.41.1)
ājñapto rāvaṇena ittham pratikūlam ca rājavat | abravīt paruṣam vākyam niḥśanko rākṣasādhipam || 41.1 ||
Thus commanded by Ravana in that contrary manner, for all his kingliness, Maricha, unafraid, spoke these harsh words to the lord of the rakshasas.
Shloka 2 (aranya.41.2)
"Night-wanderer, what evil-doer has put into your mind this notion that will ruin you together with your son, your kingdom, and your ministers?
Shloka 3 (aranya.41.3)
kaḥ tvayā sukhinā rājan na abhinandati pāpakṛt | kena idam upadiṣṭam te mṛtyu dvāram upāyataḥ || 41.3 ||
Which sinner, O king, cannot bear to see you happy, and who has so cunningly shown you this doorway to death?
Shloka 4 (aranya.41.4)
śatravaḥ tava suvyaktam hīna vīryā niśā cara | icchanti tvām vinaśyantam uparuddham balīyasā || 41.4 ||
It is plain to see, night-wanderer, that your feeble-strength enemies desire your utter ruin at the hands of one far mightier than you.
Shloka 5 (aranya.41.5)
kena idam upadiṣṭam te kṣudreṇa ahita buddhinā | yaḥ tvām icchati naśyantam sva kṛtena niśācara || 41.5 ||
Who is that malicious wretch, night-wanderer, who has counselled you toward this self-made ruin, wishing your destruction by your own hand?
Shloka 6 (aranya.41.6)
vadhyāḥ khalu na vadhyante sacivāḥ tava rāvaṇa | ye tvām utpatham ārūḍham na nigṛhṇanti sarvaśaḥ || 41.6 ||
Ravana, your ministers who fail to restrain you in any way as you climb this road to ruin truly deserve death, and yet they go unpunished.
Shloka 7 (aranya.41.7)
amātyaiḥ kāma vṛtto hi rājā kāpatham āśritaḥ | nigrāhyaḥ sarvathā sadbhiḥ na nigrāhyo nigṛhyase || 41.7 ||
Truly, a self-willed king who has taken to a wrong path ought always to be restrained by honest ministers; yet you, though you deserve restraint, remain unrestrained.
Shloka 8 (aranya.41.8)
dharmam artham ca kāmam ca yaśaḥ ca jayatām vara | svāmi prasādāt sacivāḥ prāpnuvanti niśācara || 41.8 ||
O best among conquerors, night-wanderer, it is by their master's grace that ministers attain virtue, prosperity, pleasure, and fame.
Shloka 9 (aranya.41.9)
viparyaye tu tat sarvam vyartham bhavati rāvaṇa | vyasanam svāmi vaiguṇyāt prāpnuvanti itare janāḥ || 41.9 ||
But when it is otherwise, Ravana, and the king turns perverse, all of that becomes futile -- the rest of his people reap only distress from their master's flaw.
Shloka 10 (aranya.41.10)
rāja mūlo hi dharmaḥ ca jayaḥ ca jayatām vara | tasmāt sarvāsu avasthāsu rakṣitavyo narādhipāḥ || 41.10 ||
The king alone is the root of both righteousness and victory, O best of the victorious; therefore kings must be protected in every circumstance.
Shloka 11 (aranya.41.11)
rājyam pālayitum śakyam na tīkṣṇena niśācara | na ca api pratikūlena na avinītena rākṣasa || 41.11 ||
A kingdom cannot be ruled, night-wanderer, by one who is harsh, nor by one who is contrary, nor, demon, by one who lacks discipline.
Shloka 12 (aranya.41.12)
ye tīkṣṇa mantrāḥ sacivā bhajyante saha tena vai | viṣame turagāḥ śīghrā manda sārathayo yathā || 41.12 ||
Ministers who counsel harshly are broken along with such a king, just as swift horses come to grief on rough terrain when driven by an inept charioteer.
Shloka 13 (aranya.41.13)
bahavaḥ sādhavo loke yukta dharmam anuṣṭhitāḥ | pareṣām aparādhena vinaṣṭāḥ sa paricchadāḥ || 41.13 ||
Many high-minded and virtuous people in this world, devoted to righteousness, are destroyed along with their kinsfolk by the misdeeds of others.
Shloka 14 (aranya.41.14)
svāminā pratikūlena prajāḥ tīkṣṇena rāvaṇa | rakṣyamāṇā na vardhante meṣā gomāyunā yathā || 41.14 ||
Ravana, subjects protected by a contrary and ruthless lord never flourish, just as goats guarded by a jackal can never thrive.
Shloka 15 (aranya.41.15)
avaśyam vinaśiṣyanti sarve rāvaṇa rākṣasāḥ | yeṣām tvam karkaśo rājā durbuddhiḥ ajita indriyaḥ || 41.15 ||
All the demons, Ravana, whose king you are -- harsh, evil-minded, and a slave to your own senses -- are surely destined for ruin.
Shloka 16 (aranya.41.16)
tad idam kāka tālīyam ghoram āsāditam mayā | atra tvam śocanīyo asi sa sainyo vinaśiṣyasi || 41.16 ||
This dreadful fate I have brought on myself, like the chance falling of the palm-fruit as the crow alighted; but in this affair it is you who deserve pity, for you will be destroyed along with your entire army.
Shloka 17 (aranya.41.17)
mām nihatya tu rāmo asau acirāt tvām vadhiṣyati | anena kṛta kṛtyo asmi mriye ca api ariṇā hataḥ || 41.17 ||
That Rama, once he has killed me, will soon slay you too; and I, dying at an enemy's hand, shall thereby find my life's purpose fulfilled.
Shloka 18 (aranya.41.18)
darśanāt eva rāmasya hatam mām avadhāraya | ātmānam ca hatam viddhi hṛtvā sītām sa bāndhavam || 41.18 ||
Know that I am as good as dead the instant Rama lays eyes on me; and know that you, together with your kinsmen, are as good as dead the instant you steal Sita.
Shloka 19 (aranya.41.19)
ānayiṣyasi cet sītām āśramāt sahito mayā | na eva tvam asi na eva aham na eva laṃkā na rākṣasāḥ || 41.19 ||
If, going there with me, you carry Sita off from that hermitage, then you will cease to exist, and so shall I, and so shall Lanka, and so shall the demons.
Shloka 20 (aranya.41.20)
nivāryamāṇaḥ tu mayā hita eṣiṇā | na mṛṣyase vākyam idam niśācara | pareta kalpā hi gata āyuṣo narā | hitam na gṛhṇanti suhṛdbhiḥ īritam || 41.20 ||
Though I, wishing only your welfare, dissuade you thus, you do not take this word of mine kindly, night-wanderer; but men whose span of life is exhausted become like corpses, and a corpse never accepts the wholesome counsel spoken by its well-wishers.
