Shloka 1 (ayodhya.29.1)

एतत् तु वचनम् श्रुत्वा सीता रामस्य दुह्खिता । प्रसक्त अश्रु मुखी मन्दम् इदम् वचनम् अब्रवीत् ॥ २९.१ ॥

etat tu vacanam śrutvā sītā rāmasya duhkhitā | prasakta aśru mukhī mandam idam vacanam abravīt || 29.1 ||

Hearing this word of Rama's, Sita, grieved, her face streaming with tears, spoke these words softly.

Shloka 2 (ayodhya.29.2)

ये त्वया कीर्तिता दोषा वने वस्तव्यताम् प्रति । गुणान् इति एव तान् विद्धि तव स्नेह पुरः कृतान् ॥ २९.२ ॥

ye tvayā kīrtitā doṣā vane vastavyatām prati | guṇān iti eva tān viddhi tava sneha puraḥ kṛtān || 29.2 ||

'Know that those very faults you have named about dwelling in the forest become, for me, virtues — once your love is set before them.'

Shloka 3 (ayodhya.29.3)

मृगाः सिम्हा गजाश्चैव शार्दूलाः शरभास्तथा । पक्षिणः सृमराश्चैव ये चान्ये वनचारिणः ॥ २९.३ ॥

mṛgāḥ simhā gajāścaiva śārdūlāḥ śarabhāstathā | pakṣiṇaḥ sṛmarāścaiva ye cānye vanacāriṇaḥ || 29.3 ||

'Deer, lions, and elephants, tigers, and sharabhas too, birds and forest oxen, and whatever other creatures roam the wild —'

Shloka 4 (ayodhya.29.4)

अदृष्टपूर्वरूपत्वात्सर्वे ते तव राघव । रूपम् दृष्ट्वापसर्पेयुर्भये सर्वे हि बिभ्यति ॥ २९.४ ॥

adṛṣṭapūrvarūpatvātsarve te tava rāghava | rūpam dṛṣṭvāpasarpeyurbhaye sarve hi bibhyati || 29.4 ||

'— all of them, Raghava, will flee at the very sight of you, your form never before seen by them; for wherever there is cause for fear, indeed all creatures feel it.'

Shloka 5 (ayodhya.29.5)

त्वया च सह गन्तव्यम् मया गुरु जन आज्ञया । त्वद् वियोगेन मे राम त्यक्तव्यम् इह जीवितम् ॥ २९.५ ॥

tvayā ca saha gantavyam mayā guru jana ājñayā | tvad viyogena me rāma tyaktavyam iha jīvitam || 29.5 ||

'I must go with you — by the very command of our elders; for parted from you, Rama, I would have to give up my life here.'

Shloka 6 (ayodhya.29.6)

न च माम् त्वत् समीपस्थम् अपि शक्नोति राघव । सुराणाम् ईश्वरः शक्रः प्रधर्षयितुम् ओजसा ॥ २९.६ ॥

na ca mām tvat samīpastham api śaknoti rāghava | surāṇām īśvaraḥ śakraḥ pradharṣayitum ojasā || 29.6 ||

'Nor, Raghava, could even Indra, lord of the gods, overpower me by his might, so long as I remain at your side.'

Shloka 7 (ayodhya.29.7)

पति हीना तु या नारी न सा शक्ष्यति जीवितुम् । कामम् एवम् विधम् राम त्वया मम विदर्शितम् ॥ २९.७ ॥

pati hīnā tu yā nārī na sā śakṣyati jīvitum | kāmam evam vidham rāma tvayā mama vidarśitam || 29.7 ||

'A woman without her husband cannot go on living; indeed, Rama, this very truth was taught to me by you.'

Shloka 8 (ayodhya.29.8)

अथ च अपि महा प्राज्ञ ब्राह्मणानाम् मया श्रुतम् । पुरा पितृ गृहे सत्यम् वस्तव्यम् किल मे वने ॥ २९.८ ॥

atha ca api mahā prājña brāhmaṇānām mayā śrutam | purā pitṛ gṛhe satyam vastavyam kila me vane || 29.8 ||

'And besides, O truly wise one, I heard long ago, in my father's house, from the brahmins, that I was indeed destined to dwell in a forest.'

Shloka 9 (ayodhya.29.9)

लक्षणिभ्यो द्विजातिभ्यः श्रुत्वा अहम् वचनम् गृहे । वन वास कृत उत्साहा नित्यम् एव महा बल ॥ २९.९ ॥

lakṣaṇibhyo dvijātibhyaḥ śrutvā aham vacanam gṛhe | vana vāsa kṛta utsāhā nityam eva mahā bala || 29.9 ||

'Ever since I heard that word at home from brahmins skilled in reading the marks of the body, O mighty one, I have always been eager for a life in the forest.'

Shloka 10 (ayodhya.29.10)

आदेशो वन वासस्य प्राप्तव्यः स मया किल । सा त्वया सह तत्र अहम् यास्यामि प्रिय न अन्यथा ॥ २९.१० ॥

ādeśo vana vāsasya prāptavyaḥ sa mayā kila | sā tvayā saha tatra aham yāsyāmi priya na anyathā || 29.10 ||

'That decree of forest-dwelling is truly mine to fulfil; so, beloved, I shall go there with you, and in no other way.'

Shloka 11 (ayodhya.29.11)

कृत आदेशा भविष्यामि गमिष्यामि सह त्वया । कालः च अयम् समुत्पन्नः सत्य वाग् भवतु द्विजः ॥ २९.११ ॥

kṛta ādeśā bhaviṣyāmi gamiṣyāmi saha tvayā | kālaḥ ca ayam samutpannaḥ satya vāg bhavatu dvijaḥ || 29.11 ||

'I shall become one who has fulfilled that decree — I shall go with you. This is the very time come for it; let the brahmin's word prove true.'

Shloka 12 (ayodhya.29.12)

वन वासे हि जानामि दुह्खानि बहुधा किल । प्राप्यन्ते नियतम् वीर पुरुषैः अकृत आत्मभिः ॥ २९.१२ ॥

vana vāse hi jānāmi duhkhāni bahudhā kila | prāpyante niyatam vīra puruṣaiḥ akṛta ātmabhiḥ || 29.12 ||

'I know indeed, hero, that many kinds of suffering are surely met with in forest life — but only, and always, by men whose minds are undisciplined.'

Shloka 13 (ayodhya.29.13)

कन्यया च पितुर् गेहे वन वासः श्रुतः मया भिक्षिण्याः साधु वृत्ताया मम मातुर् इह अग्रतः ॥ २९.१३ ॥

kanyayā ca pitur gehe vana vāsaḥ śrutaḥ mayā bhikṣiṇyāḥ sādhu vṛttāyā mama mātur iha agrataḥ || 29.13 ||

'While still a maiden in my father's house, I heard of this forest-dwelling from a well-mannered mendicant woman, in my own mother's presence.'

Shloka 14 (ayodhya.29.14)

प्रसादितः च वै पूर्वम् त्वम् वै बहु विधम् प्रभो । गमनम् वन वासस्य कान्क्षितम् हि सह त्वया ॥ २९.१४ ॥

prasāditaḥ ca vai pūrvam tvam vai bahu vidham prabho | gamanam vana vāsasya kānkṣitam hi saha tvayā || 29.14 ||

'And long ago, my lord, I entreated you in many ways, for I have always longed to journey to the forest at your side.'

Shloka 15 (ayodhya.29.15)

कृत क्षणा अहम् भद्रम् ते गमनम् प्रति राघव । वन वासस्य शूरस्य चर्या हि मम रोचते ॥ २९.१५ ॥

kṛta kṣaṇā aham bhadram te gamanam prati rāghava | vana vāsasya śūrasya caryā hi mama rocate || 29.15 ||

'I have long awaited this very moment, Raghava — good fortune go with you. The wandering forest-life of a hero is truly pleasing to me.'

Shloka 16 (ayodhya.29.16)

शुद्ध आत्मन् प्रेम भावाद्द् हि भविष्यामि विकल्मषा । भर्तारम् अनुगच्चन्ती भर्ता हि मम दैवतम् ॥ २९.१६ ॥

śuddha ātman prema bhāvādd hi bhaviṣyāmi vikalmaṣā | bhartāram anugaccantī bhartā hi mama daivatam || 29.16 ||

'O pure-souled one, following my husband in loving devotion, I shall become free of all sin; for my husband is indeed my deity.'

Shloka 17 (ayodhya.29.17)

प्रेत्य भावे अपि कल्याणः सम्गमः मे सह त्वया । श्रुतिर् हि श्रूयते पुण्या ब्राह्मणानाम् यशस्विनाम् ॥ २९.१७ ॥

pretya bhāve api kalyāṇaḥ samgamaḥ me saha tvayā | śrutir hi śrūyate puṇyā brāhmaṇānām yaśasvinām || 29.17 ||

'Even after death, my union with you shall remain blessed; for this the sacred, meritorious word of renowned brahmins is heard —'

Shloka 18 (ayodhya.29.18)

इह लोके च पितृभिर् या स्त्री यस्य महा मते । अद्भिर् दत्ता स्वधर्मेण प्रेत्य भावे अपि तस्य सा ॥ २९.१८ ॥

iha loke ca pitṛbhir yā strī yasya mahā mate | adbhir dattā svadharmeṇa pretya bhāve api tasya sā || 29.18 ||

'— that whatever woman, O great-minded one, is given in this world by her parents to a man, with water and by sacred rite, she remains his even after death.'

Shloka 19 (ayodhya.29.19)

एवम् अस्मात् स्वकाम् नारीम् सुवृत्ताम् हि पति व्रताम् । न अभिरोचयसे नेतुम् त्वम् माम् केन इह हेतुना ॥ २९.१९ ॥

evam asmāt svakām nārīm suvṛttām hi pati vratām | na abhirocayase netum tvam mām kena iha hetunā || 29.19 ||

'So then, for what reason do you refuse to take with you from here your own wife — one of good conduct, and devoted wholly to her husband?'

Shloka 20 (ayodhya.29.20)

भक्ताम् पति व्रताम् दीनाम् माम् समाम् सुख दुह्खयोह् । नेतुम् अर्हसि काकुत्स्थ समान सुख दुह्खिनीम् ॥ २९.२० ॥

bhaktām pati vratām dīnām mām samām sukha duhkhayoh | netum arhasi kākutstha samāna sukha duhkhinīm || 29.20 ||

'You ought to take me with you, Kakutstha — devoted, faithful to my vow, wretched now, equal in joy and in sorrow, one who shares alike whatever you feel.'

Shloka 21 (ayodhya.29.21)

यदि माम् दुह्खिताम् एवम् वनम् नेतुम् न च इच्चसि । विषम् अग्निम् जलम् वा अहम् आस्थास्ये मृत्यु कारणात् ॥ २९.२१ ॥

yadi mām duhkhitām evam vanam netum na ca iccasi | viṣam agnim jalam vā aham āsthāsye mṛtyu kāraṇāt || 29.21 ||

'If, grieved as I am, you still will not take me to the forest, then I shall resort to poison, or fire, or water, for the sake of death.'

Shloka 22 (ayodhya.29.22)

एवम् बहु विधम् तम् सा याचते गमनम् प्रति । न अनुमेने महा बाहुस् ताम् नेतुम् विजनम् वनम् ॥ २९.२२ ॥

evam bahu vidham tam sā yācate gamanam prati | na anumene mahā bāhus tām netum vijanam vanam || 29.22 ||

Though she pleaded with him thus, in many ways, about going with him, the mighty-armed Rama did not consent to take her to that lonely forest.

Shloka 23 (ayodhya.29.23)

एवम् उक्ता तु सा चिन्ताम् मैथिली समुपागता । स्नापयन्ती इव गाम् उष्णैः अश्रुभिर् नयन च्युतैः ॥ २९.२३ ॥

evam uktā tu sā cintām maithilī samupāgatā | snāpayantī iva gām uṣṇaiḥ aśrubhir nayana cyutaiḥ || 29.23 ||

Thus refused, Maithili fell into anguish, as though bathing the earth with the hot tears streaming down from her eyes.

Shloka 24 (ayodhya.29.24)

चिन्तयन्तीम् तथा ताम् तु निवर्तयितुम् आत्मवान् । ताम्रोष्ठीं स तदा सीताम् काकुत्स्थो बह्व् असान्त्वयत् ॥ २९.२४ ॥

cintayantīm tathā tām tu nivartayitum ātmavān | tāmroṣṭhīṃ sa tadā sītām kākutstho bahv asāntvayat || 29.24 ||

Then Kakutstha, master of himself, seeing Sita of the red lips so distressed, comforted her at length in many ways, seeking to turn her from her purpose.
