Shloka 1 (kishkindha.10.1)

tataḥ krodha samāviṣṭam samrabdham tam upāgatam | aham prasādayān cakre bhrātaram hita kāmyayā

Then, as he returned filled with anger and agitation, I, desiring his own good, sought to appease my brother.

Shloka 2 (kishkindha.10.2)

diṣṭyā asi kuśalī prāpto nihataḥ ca tvayā ripuḥ | anāthasya hi me nāthaḥ tvam eko anātha nandanaḥ

I said, 'By good fortune you have returned safe, and you have slain the enemy. To one as helpless as I, you alone are protector, O joy of the helpless.'

Shloka 3 (kishkindha.10.3)

idam bahu śalākam te pūrṇa candram iva uditam | chatram sa vāla vyajanam pratīcchasva mayā dhṛtam

'Accept this many-ribbed royal umbrella, risen like the full moon, together with the fly-whisk, which I now hold ready for you.'

Shloka 4 (kishkindha.10.4)

ārtasya atha bilā dvāri sthitaḥ saṃvatsaram nṛpa | dṛṣṭvā ca śoṇitam dvāri bilāt ca api samutthitam

'O king, in my anguish I stood a full year at the mouth of that pit; and when I saw blood welling up and flowing from its entrance—

Shloka 5 (kishkindha.10.5)

śoka saṃvigna hṛdayo bhṛśam vyākulita indriyaḥ | apidhāya bila dvāram śaila śṛṅgeṇa tat tadā

—my heart shaken with grief and my senses thrown into utter confusion, I then sealed the mouth of that pit with a mountain peak,

Shloka 6 (kishkindha.10.6)

tasmāt deśāt apākramya kiṣkindhām prāviśam punaḥ | viṣādāt iha mām dṛṣṭvā pauraiḥ maṃtribhir eva ca

—and, departing from that place, returned once more into Kishkindha. Here, seeing me in such despair, the citizens and ministers themselves—

Shloka 7 (kishkindha.10.7)

abhiṣikto na kāmena tanme kṣantum tvam arhasi | tvam eva rājā mānārhaḥ sadā ca aham yathā purā

—crowned me, though not by my own wish; for that you should pardon me. You alone are the rightful king deserving honor, and I shall always remain as I was before.

Shloka 8 (kishkindha.10.8)

rājabhāve niyogaḥ ayam mama tvat virahāt kṛtaḥ | sa amātya paura nagaram sthitam nihata kaṇṭakam

'This appointment to kingship was made only because of your absence. The city, together with its ministers and citizens, now stands free of every thorn.'

Shloka 9 (kishkindha.10.9)

nyāsa bhūtam idam rājyam tava niryātayāmi aham | mā ca roṣam kṛthāḥ saumya mama śatru niṣūdana

'I now return to you this kingdom, which I held only in trust. Do not be angry with me, gentle one, O destroyer of foes.'

Shloka 10 (kishkindha.10.10)

yāce tvām śirasā rājan mayā baddho ayam aṃjaliḥ | balāt asmin samāgamya maṃtribhiḥ pura vāsibhiḥ

'O king, with bowed head I entreat you, my hands joined in supplication. The ministers and townsfolk, gathering together, forcibly—

Shloka 11 (kishkindha.10.11)

rājabhāve niyukto aham śūnya deśa jigīṣayā | snigdham evam bruvāṇam mām sa vinirbhartsya vānaraḥ

—appointed me to kingship, only wishing to keep this leaderless realm secure.' Yet even as I spoke so affectionately, that monkey Vali, scorning me harshly—

Shloka 12 (kishkindha.10.12)

dhik tvām iti ca mām uktvā bahu tat tat uvāca ha | prakṛtīḥ ca samānīya maṃtriṇaḥ caiva sammatān

—said, 'Shame on you!' and much more besides. Then, summoning the subjects and the honored ministers together—

Shloka 13 (kishkindha.10.13)

mām āha suhṛdām madhye vākyam parama garhitam | viditam vo mayā rātrau māyāvī sa mahāasuraḥ

—he spoke to me, before all our friends, these most contemptuous words: 'You all know how, one night, that great demon Mayavi—

Shloka 14 (kishkindha.10.14)

mām samāhvayata kruddho yuddha kāṃkṣī tadā purā | tasya tad bhāṣitam śrutvā niḥsṛtaḥ aham nṛpāalayāt

—in his fury, eager for battle, challenged me. Hearing his words, I came forth at once from the royal palace,

Shloka 15 (kishkindha.10.15)

anuyātaḥ ca mām tūrṇam ayam bhrātā sudāruṇaḥ | sa tu dṛṣṭvā eva mām rātrau sa dvitīyam mahābalaḥ

—and this exceedingly bold brother of mine followed close behind me at once. When that mighty one saw me there in the night, accompanied by a second—

Shloka 16 (kishkindha.10.16)

prādravat bhaya saṃtrasto vīkṣya āvām samupāgatau | abhidrutaḥ tu vegena viveśa sa mahābilam

—he fled in terror; and seeing the two of us bearing down upon him, he rushed headlong and plunged into a vast pit.

Shloka 17 (kishkindha.10.17)

tam praviṣṭam viditvā tu sughoram sumahad bilam | ayam ukto atha me bhrātā mayā tu krūra darśanaḥ

Knowing that he had entered that most terrible and vast pit, I then said to this fierce-looking brother of mine—

Shloka 18 (kishkindha.10.18)

ahatvā na asti me śaktiḥ prati gantum itaḥ purīm | bila dvāri pratīkṣa tvam yāvat enam nihanmi aham

—'I have not the strength to return to the city from here without killing him. Wait you at the mouth of this pit until I have slain him.'

Shloka 19 (kishkindha.10.19)

sthito'yam iti matvā aham praviṣṭaḥ tu durāsadam | tam me mārgayataḥ tatra gataḥ saṃvatsaraḥ tadā

Thinking he would remain waiting there, I entered that forbidding pit; and a whole year passed there as I searched for that enemy.

Shloka 20 (kishkindha.10.20)

sa tu dṛṣṭo mayā śatruḥ anirvedāt bhayāavahaḥ | nihataḥ ca mayā sadyaḥ saḥ sarvaiḥ saha bandhubhiḥ

At last, never giving up, I found that fear-inspiring enemy, and slew him at once, along with all his kinsmen.

Shloka 21 (kishkindha.10.21)

tasya āsyāt tu pravṛttena rudhiraugheṇa tad bilam | pūrṇam āsīt durākrāmam svanataḥ tasya bhūtale

That pit was filled by the stream of blood pouring from his mouth, and, echoing with his death-cries, it became impossible to make one's way out of it.

Shloka 22 (kishkindha.10.22)

sūdayitvā tu tam śatrum vikrāntam tam aham sukham | niṣkrāmam na eva paśyāmi bilasya pihitam mukham

Though I had slain that mighty enemy with ease, I could find no way out, for the mouth of the pit had been sealed shut.

Shloka 23 (kishkindha.10.23)

vikrośamānasya tu me sugrīva iti punaḥ punaḥ | yataḥ prativaco nāsti tataḥ aham bhṛśa duḥkhitaḥ

I called out again and again, 'Sugriva! Sugriva!' — but when no answer came, I was overcome with deep sorrow.

Shloka 24 (kishkindha.10.24)

pāda prahāraiḥ tu mayā bahubhiḥ paripātitam | tataḥ aham tena niṣkramya pathā puram upāgataḥ

Then, with many blows of my feet, I brought that boulder crashing down, and, coming out that way, made my way back to the city.

Shloka 25 (kishkindha.10.25)

tatra anena asmi samruddhaḥ rājyam mṛgayata ātmanaḥ | sugrīveṇa nṛśaṃsena vismṛtya bhrātṛ sauhṛdam

'There this cruel Sugriva, forgetting all brotherly affection in his greed for the kingdom for himself, trapped me shut within that pit.' Thus Vali spoke before the whole assembly.

Shloka 26 (kishkindha.10.26)

evam uktvā tu mām tatra vastreṇa ekena vānaraḥ | tadā nirvāsayāmāsa vālī vigata sādhvasaḥ

Having said this, that monkey Vali, wholly without shame, then and there banished me, clad in but a single garment.

Shloka 27 (kishkindha.10.27)

tena aham apaviddhaḥ ca hṛta dāraḥ ca rāghava | tat bhayāt ca mahīm sarvān krāntavān sa vana arṇavām

Thus, O Raghava, he cast me out and seized my wife as well; and out of fear of him I have wandered over the whole earth, its forests and its seas.

Shloka 28 (kishkindha.10.28)

ṛśyamūkam giri varam bhāryā haraṇa duḥkhitaḥ | praviṣṭo asmi durādharṣam vālinaḥ kāraṇāntare

Grieving for my abducted wife, I came to this formidable mountain Rishyamuka, which, for another reason, remains unassailable even to Vali.

Shloka 29 (kishkindha.10.29)

etat te sarvam ākhyātam vaira anukathanam mahat | anāgasā mayā prāptam vyasanam paśya rāghava

This, O Raghava, is the whole great account of our enmity that I have related to you; see now what calamity has befallen me, though I am innocent of any wrong.

Shloka 30 (kishkindha.10.30)

vālinaḥ ca bhayāt tasya sarvaloka bhayāpaha | kartum arhasi me vīra prasādam tasya nigrahāt

O hero who dispels the fear of all the worlds, be gracious enough to free me from fear of that Vali, and to restrain him.

Shloka 31 (kishkindha.10.31)

evam uktaḥ sa tejasvī dharmajño dharma saṃhitam | vacanam vaktum ārebhe sugrīvam prahasan iva

Thus addressed, the radiant Rama, knower of righteousness, began, as if smiling, to speak to Sugriva words in accord with dharma.

Shloka 32 (kishkindha.10.32)

amoghāḥ sūrya saṃkāśā niśitā me śarā ime | tasmin vālini durvṛtte patiṣyanti ruṣa anvitāḥ

'These sharp, unfailing arrows of mine, blazing like the sun, shall fall, charged with my wrath, upon that wicked Vali.'

Shloka 33 (kishkindha.10.33)

yāvat tam na hi paśyeyam tava bhārya apahāriṇam | tāvat sa jīvet pāpātmā vālī cāritra dūṣakaḥ

'Only until I set eyes upon him — that abductor of your wife — may that sinful, conduct-defiling Vali go on living.'

Shloka 34 (kishkindha.10.34)

ātma anumānāt paśyāmi magnaḥ tvām śoka sāgare | tvām aham tārayiṣyāmi bāḍham prāpsyasi puṣkalam

'From my own experience I can see you are sunk in an ocean of grief. I shall surely bring you across it, and you will indeed regain abundance.'

Shloka 35 (kishkindha.10.35)

tasya tat vacanam śrutvā harṣa pauruṣa vardhanam | sugrīvaḥ parama prītaḥ su mahat vākyam abravīt

Hearing those words of his, which increased both joy and courage, Sugriva, greatly delighted, spoke this weighty reply.
