Having made a covenant with Sugriva, the sinless Rama, delight of the Raghus, spoke these grave words befitting the season -
Shloka 6 (kishkindha.27.6)
vinītaṃ bhrātaraṃ bhrātā lakṣmaṇaṃ lakṣmivardhanam | iyaṃ giriguhā ramyā viśālā yuktamārutā || 27.6 ||
to his humble brother Lakshmana, increaser of good fortune: "This mountain cave is delightful, spacious, and blessed with pleasant breezes.

In this spot sloping to the east and north the cave will be a fine one; and, gentle one, being raised toward the west, it will also be sheltered from the gusts.
Shloka 13 (kishkindha.27.13)
guhādvāre ca saumitre śilā samatalā śivā | kṛṣṇā caivāyatā caiva bhinnāñjanacayopamā || 27.13 ||
At the cave's mouth, O Saumitri, is a level and auspicious rock, black and broad, like a heap of shattered collyrium.
Shloka 14 (kishkindha.27.14)

And see too, standing in the southern quarter, another peak, white as a garment spread across the sky, rivalling the summit of Kailasa, resplendent with many ores.
Shloka 16 (kishkindha.27.16)
prācīnavāhinīṃ caiva nadīṃ bhṛśamakardamām | guhāyāḥ parataḥ paśya trikūṭe jāhnavīmiva || 27.16 ||
And see, beyond the cave, this river flowing eastward, quite free of mud, as though the Ganga were flowing at Trikuta,
Shloka 17 (kishkindha.27.17)

vānīraistimidaiścaiva bakulaiḥ ketakairapi | hintālaistiniśairnīpairvetasaiḥ kṛtamālakaiḥ || 27.18 ||
With vanira, timida, bakula, and ketaka trees, and with hintala, tinisha, nipa, vetasa, and kritamalaka trees,
Shloka 19 (kishkindha.27.19)

brightened here and there by the trees of manifold forms growing on its banks, that river shines forth as if a young woman finely adorned with raiment and ornaments.
Shloka 20 (kishkindha.27.20)

and served by swans and cranes upon her most delightful sandbanks, this river shines as if smiling -- a woman adorned with jewels.
Shloka 22 (kishkindha.27.22)
kvacinnīlotpalaiśchannā bhātiraktotpalaiḥ kvacit | kvacidābhāti śuklaiśca divyaiḥ kumudakuḍmalaiḥ || 27.22 ||
Somewhere covered with blue lotuses she shines, elsewhere with red lotuses; and elsewhere she gleams with the divine buds of white water-lilies.
Shloka 23 (kishkindha.27.23)

Frequented by hundreds of waterfowl, resounding with peacocks and curlews, this gracious river, gentle one, is served by throngs of sages.
Shloka 24 (kishkindha.27.24)
paśya candanavṛkṣāṇāṃ paṅktiḥ surucirā iva | kakubhānāṃ ca dṛśyante manasaivoditāḥ samam || 27.24 ||
See how these rows of sandalwood trees appear so captivating, as if they had sprung up all at once by mere will; and the rows of Kakubha trees too appear likewise.
Shloka 25 (kishkindha.27.25)
aho suramaṇīyo'yaṃ deśaḥ śatruniṣūdana | dṛḍhaṃ raṃsyāva saumitre sādhvatra nivasāvahe || 27.25 ||
Ah, how truly delightful is this place, O destroyer of foes! Surely we shall find joy here, Saumitri; let us dwell happily in this very spot."
Shloka 26 (kishkindha.27.26)
itaśca nātidūre sā kiṣkindhā citrakānanā | sugrīvasya purī ramyā bhaviṣyati nṛpātmaja || 27.26 ||
And not far from here, O prince, lies Kishkindha of the wondrous groves, the fair city of Sugriva.
Shloka 27 (kishkindha.27.27)

The sound of song and music can be heard from here, O best of the triumphant, along with the roars of monkeys and the din of their drums."
Shloka 28 (kishkindha.27.28)
labdhvā bhāryāṃ kapivaraḥ prāpya rājyaṃ suhṛdvṛtaḥ | dhruvaṃ nandati sugrīvaḥ samprāpya mahatīṃ śriyam || 27.28 ||
"Having won back his wife, having gained his kingdom, and surrounded by his friends, Sugriva, best of monkeys, must surely be rejoicing, having attained such great prosperity."
Shloka 29 (kishkindha.27.29)
ityuktvā nyavasat tatra rāghavaḥ sahalakṣmaṇaḥ | bahudṛśyadarīkuñje tasmin prasravaṇe girau || 27.29 ||
Having spoken thus, Raghava dwelt there with Lakshmana on that Mount Prasravana, amid its many lovely caves and thickets.
Shloka 30 (kishkindha.27.30)
susukhe hi bahudravye tasmin hi dharaṇīdhare | vasatastasya rāmasya ratiralpāpi nābhavat || 27.30 ||
Though that mountain was most comfortable and rich with every resource, yet, dwelling there, Rama felt not the least delight,
Shloka 31 (kishkindha.27.31)
hṛtāṃ hi bhāryāṃ smarataḥ prāṇebhyo'pi garīyasīm | udayābhyuditaṃ dṛṣṭvā śaśāṅkaṃ ca viśeṣataḥ || 27.31 ||
as he remembered his wife, who had been carried off, dearer to him than his own life, especially on seeing the moon just risen from the eastern peak.
Shloka 32 (kishkindha.27.32)
āviveśa na taṃ nidrā niśāsu śayanaṃ gatam | tatsamutthena śokena bāṣpopahatacetanam || 27.32 ||
Sleep would not come to him at night when he lay down to rest, his mind overwhelmed by tears springing from that same grief.
Shloka 33 (kishkindha.27.33)
taṃ śocamānaṃ kākutsthaṃ nityaṃ śokaparāyaṇam | tulyaduḥkho'bravīdbhrātā lakṣmaṇo'nunayaṃ vacaḥ || 27.33 ||
To that Kakutstha who grieved thus, ever given over to sorrow, his brother Lakshmana, sharing equally in his pain, spoke these consoling words -
Shloka 34 (kishkindha.27.34)
"Enough, O hero, of yielding to this anguish; it is not fitting for you to grieve. You know well that for one who grieves, all his purposes come to ruin.
Shloka 35 (kishkindha.27.35)
bhavān kriyāparo loke bhavān devaparāyaṇaḥ | āstiko dharmaśīlaśca vyavasāyī ca rāghava || 27.35 ||
You are one devoted to right action in this world, devoted to the gods; you are a believer, righteous in conduct, and resolute, O Raghava.
Shloka 36 (kishkindha.27.36)
na hyavyavasitaḥ śatruṃ rākṣasaṃ taṃ viśeṣataḥ | samarthastvaṃ raṇe hantuṃ vikrame jihmakāriṇam || 27.36 ||
If you become lackadaisical, you will surely not be able to slay in battle that especially cunning demon-enemy through your valour.
Shloka 37 (kishkindha.27.37)
samunmūlaya śokaṃ tvaṃ vyavasāyaṃ sthirīkuru | tataḥ saparivāraṃ taṃ rākṣasaṃ hantumarhasi || 27.37 ||
Uproot this grief, and make firm your resolve; then you will be able to slay that demon together with all his kin.
Shloka 38 (kishkindha.27.38)
pṛthivīmapi kākutstha sasāgaravanācalām | parivartayituṃ śaktaḥ kiṃ punastaṃ hi rāvaṇam || 27.38 ||
O Kakutstha, you who are capable of overturning even the earth with its oceans, forests, and mountains -- what then of Ravana?
Shloka 39 (kishkindha.27.39)
śaratkālaṃ pratīkṣasva prāvṛṭkālo'yamāgataḥ | tataḥ sarāṣṭraṃ sagaṇaṃ rāvaṇaṃ taṃ vadhiṣyasi || 27.39 ||
Wait for the autumn; this season that has come is one of heavy rains. Thereafter you shall slay that Ravana together with his realm and his hosts."
Shloka 40 (kishkindha.27.40)
ahaṃ tu khalu te vīryaṃ prasuptaṃ pratibodhaye | dīptairāhutibhiḥ kāle bhasmacchannamivānalam || 27.40 ||
"I am but awakening your slumbering valour, as one rekindles with blazing oblations a fire that lies concealed beneath its ashes."
Shloka 41 (kishkindha.27.41)
lakṣmaṇasya hi tad vākyaṃ pratipūjya hitaṃ śubham | rāghavaḥ suhṛdaṃ snigdhamidaṃ vacanamabravīt || 27.41 ||
Honouring that beneficial and auspicious speech of Lakshmana, Raghava spoke this affectionate word to his good-hearted friend -
Shloka 42 (kishkindha.27.42)
vācyaṃ yadanuraktena snigdhena ca hitena ca | satyavikramayuktena taduktaṃ lakṣmaṇa tvayā || 27.42 ||
"What ought to be said by one who is affectionate, amiable, well-wishing, and possessed of true courage -- that, Lakshmana, you have said.
Shloka 43 (kishkindha.27.43)
eṣa śokaḥ parityaktaḥ sarvakāryāvasādakaḥ | vikrameṣvapratihataṃ tejaḥ protsāhayāmyaham || 27.43 ||
This grief, which undermines all endeavour, I have now cast aside; I am rousing anew my unconquerable vigour for feats of valour.
Shloka 44 (kishkindha.27.44)
śaratkālaṃ pratīkṣiṣye sthito'smi vacane tava | sugrīvasya nadīnāṃ ca prasādamanupālayan || 27.44 ||
I shall wait for the autumn, abiding by your word, biding my time in deference to Sugriva's kindness, and to the rivers'.
Shloka 45 (kishkindha.27.45)
upakāreṇa vīrastu pratikāreṇa yujyate | akṛtajño'pratikṛto hanti sattvavatāṃ manaḥ || 27.45 ||
A valiant one, when helped, is bound to make requital; but one who is ungrateful and fails to requite wounds the hearts of the noble-spirited."
Shloka 46 (kishkindha.27.46)
tadeva yuktaṃ praṇidhāya lakṣmaṇaḥ | kṛtāñjalistat pratipūjya bhāṣitam | uvāca rāmaṃ svabhirāmadarśanaṃ | pradarśayan darśanamātmanaḥ śubham || 27.46 ||
Considering that resolve alone to be right, Lakshmana, with joined palms, honouring that speech and revealing his own auspicious view, spoke thus to Rama, whose very sight was delightful -
Shloka 47 (kishkindha.27.47)
yathoktametat tava sarvamīpsitaṃ | narendra kartā nacirāt tu vānaraḥ | śaratpratīkṣaḥ kṣamatāmimaṃ bhavān | jalaprapātaṃ ripunigrahe dhṛtaḥ || 27.47 ||
"All this is as you have said, and all that you desire, O lord of men, the monkey will soon accomplish. Resolved as you are on subduing the enemy, please bear with this downpour while awaiting the autumn.
Shloka 48 (kishkindha.27.48)
niyamya kopaṃ paripālyatāṃ śarat | kṣamasva māsāṃścaturo mayā saha | vasācale'smin mṛgarājasevite | saṃvartayan śatruvadhe samarthaḥ || 27.48 ||
Restrain your anger and let the autumn be awaited; bear with me these four months, dwelling on this mountain frequented by the king of beasts, though you are capable, even now, of accomplishing the enemy's destruction."
