The Coronation of Sugriva
Shloka 1 (kishkindha.26.1)
ततः शोकाभिसंतप्तं सुग्रीवं क्लिन्नवाससम् । शाखामृगमहामात्राः परिवार्योपतस्थिरे ॥ 26.1 ॥
tataḥ śokābhisaṃtaptaṃ sugrīvaṃ klinnavāsasam | śākhāmṛgamahāmātrāḥ parivāryopatasthire || 26.1 ||
Then the eminent ministers of the tree-branch monkeys came and stood close about Sugriva, who was still burning with grief and clad in damp garments.
Shloka 2 (kishkindha.26.2)
अभिगम्य महाबाहुं राममक्लिष्टकारिणम् । स्थिताः प्राञ्जलयः सर्वे पितामहमिवर्षयः ॥ 26.2 ॥
abhigamya mahābāhuṃ rāmamakliṣṭakāriṇam | sthitāḥ prāñjalayaḥ sarve pitāmahamivarṣayaḥ || 26.2 ||
Approaching the mighty-armed Rama, whose deeds are ever effortless, all of them stood with joined palms, as sages stand before Brahma the Grandsire.
Shloka 3 (kishkindha.26.3)
ततः काञ्चनशैलाभस्तरुणार्कनिभाननः । अब्रवीत् प्राञ्जलिर्वाक्यं हनूमान् मारुतात्मजः ॥ 26.3 ॥
tataḥ kāñcanaśailābhastaruṇārkanibhānanaḥ | abravīt prāñjalirvākyaṃ hanūmān mārutātmajaḥ || 26.3 ||
Then Hanuman, son of the Wind-god, radiant as a golden mountain and with a face like the newly risen sun, spoke these words with joined palms.
Shloka 4 (kishkindha.26.4)
भवत्प्रसादात् काकुत्स्थ पितृपैतामहं महत् । वानराणां सुदंष्ट्राणां सम्पन्नबलशालिनाम् ॥ 26.4 ॥
bhavatprasādāt kākutstha pitṛpaitāmahaṃ mahat | vānarāṇāṃ sudaṃṣṭrāṇāṃ sampannabalaśālinām || 26.4 ||
"O Kakutstha, by your grace this vast kingdom of sharp-toothed and mighty monkeys, handed down from their fathers and forefathers,
Shloka 5 (kishkindha.26.5)
महात्मनां सुदुष्प्रापं प्राप्तं राज्यमिदं प्रभो । भवता समनुज्ञातः प्रविश्य नगरं शुभम् ॥ 26.5 ॥
mahātmanāṃ suduṣprāpaṃ prāptaṃ rājyamidaṃ prabho | bhavatā samanujñātaḥ praviśya nagaraṃ śubham || 26.5 ||
this kingdom so hard even for the great-souled to attain, has been regained, O lord! If you but permit him, Sugriva will enter this auspicious city and,
Shloka 6 (kishkindha.26.6)
संविधास्यति कार्याणि सर्वाणि ससुहृद्गणः । स्नातोऽयं विविधैर्गन्धैरौषधैश्च यथाविधि ॥ 26.6 ॥
saṃvidhāsyati kāryāṇi sarvāṇi sasuhṛdgaṇaḥ | snāto'yaṃ vividhairgandhairauṣadhaiśca yathāvidhi || 26.6 ||
together with his band of friends, will set all its affairs in proper order; and once he has duly bathed with various fragrant substances and herbs,
Shloka 7 (kishkindha.26.7)
अर्चयिष्यति माल्यैश्च रत्नैश्च त्वां विशेषतः । इमां गिरिगुहां रम्यामभिगन्तुं त्वमर्हसि ॥ 26.7 ॥
arcayiṣyati mālyaiśca ratnaiśca tvāṃ viśeṣataḥ | imāṃ giriguhāṃ ramyāmabhigantuṃ tvamarhasi || 26.7 ||
he will honour you especially with garlands and jewels. It behoves you to visit this delightful mountain cave.
Shloka 8 (kishkindha.26.8)
कुरुष्व स्वामिसम्बन्धं वानरान् सम्प्रहर्षय । एवमुक्तो हनुमता राघवः परवीरहा ॥ 26.8 ॥
kuruṣva svāmisambandhaṃ vānarān sampraharṣaya | evamukto hanumatā rāghavaḥ paravīrahā || 26.8 ||
Establish this bond between lord and subjects, and gladden the monkeys." Thus addressed by Hanuman, Raghava, slayer of valiant foes,
Shloka 9 (kishkindha.26.9)
प्रत्युवाच हनूमन्तं बुद्धिमान् वाक्यकोविदः । चतुर्दश समाः सौम्य ग्रामं वा यदि वा पुरम् ॥ 26.9 ॥
pratyuvāca hanūmantaṃ buddhimān vākyakovidaḥ | caturdaśa samāḥ saumya grāmaṃ vā yadi vā puram || 26.9 ||
that wise one, skilled in speech, replied to Hanuman: "For fourteen years, O gentle one, whether it be village or city,
Shloka 10 (kishkindha.26.10)
न प्रवेक्ष्यामि हनुमन् पितुर्निर्देशपालकः । सुसमृद्धां गुहां दिव्यां सुग्रीवो वानरर्षभः ॥ 26.10 ॥
na pravekṣyāmi hanuman piturnirdeśapālakaḥ | susamṛddhāṃ guhāṃ divyāṃ sugrīvo vānararṣabhaḥ || 26.10 ||
I shall enter none, O Hanuman, for I am bound to obey my father's command. Let Sugriva, bull among monkeys, having entered this rich and wondrous cave,
Shloka 11 (kishkindha.26.11)
प्रविष्टो विधिवद् वीरः क्षिप्रं राज्येऽभिषिच्यताम् । एवमुक्त्वा हनूमन्तं रामः सुग्रीवमब्रवीत् ॥ 26.11 ॥
praviṣṭo vidhivad vīraḥ kṣipraṃ rājye'bhiṣicyatām | evamuktvā hanūmantaṃ rāmaḥ sugrīvamabravīt || 26.11 ||
that valiant one be swiftly and duly anointed to the kingdom." Having spoken thus to Hanuman, Rama then said to Sugriva -
Shloka 12 (kishkindha.26.12)
वृत्तज्ञो वृत्तसम्पन्नमुदारबलविक्रमम् । इममप्यङ्गदं वीरं यौवराज्येऽभिषेचय ॥ 26.12 ॥
vṛttajño vṛttasampannamudārabalavikramam | imamapyaṅgadaṃ vīraṃ yauvarājye'bhiṣecaya || 26.12 ||
Rama, knower of proper conduct, said to him who was rich in fine bearing and generous in might and valour: "Anoint this valiant Angada also as crown prince.
Shloka 13 (kishkindha.26.13)
ज्येष्ठस्य हि सुतो ज्येष्ठः सदृशो विक्रमेण च । अङ्गदोऽयमदीनात्मा यौवराज्यस्य भाजनम् ॥ 26.13 ॥
jyeṣṭhasya hi suto jyeṣṭhaḥ sadṛśo vikrameṇa ca | aṅgado'yamadīnātmā yauvarājyasya bhājanam || 26.13 ||
For he is indeed the eldest son of your elder brother, and equal to him in valour; this noble-hearted Angada is a fit vessel for the crown-princedom."
Shloka 14 (kishkindha.26.14)
पूर्वोऽयं वार्षिको मासः श्रावणः सलिलागमः । प्रवृत्ताः सौम्य चत्वारो मासा वार्षिक संज्ञिताः ॥ 26.14 ॥
pūrvo'yaṃ vārṣiko māsaḥ śrāvaṇaḥ salilāgamaḥ | pravṛttāḥ saumya catvāro māsā vārṣika saṃjñitāḥ || 26.14 ||
"This is Shravana, the first month of the rains, when the waters begin to come; four months, O gentle one, are reckoned as the rainy season.
Shloka 15 (kishkindha.26.15)
नायमुद्योगसमयः प्रविश त्वं पुरीं शुभाम् । अस्मिन् वत्स्याम्यहं सौम्य पर्वते सहलक्ष्मणः ॥ 26.15 ॥
nāyamudyogasamayaḥ praviśa tvaṃ purīṃ śubhām | asmin vatsyāmyahaṃ saumya parvate sahalakṣmaṇaḥ || 26.15 ||
This is no time for striving; enter, then, the fair city. I, for my part, O gentle one, shall dwell here upon this mountain with Lakshmana.
Shloka 16 (kishkindha.26.16)
इयं गिरिगुहा रम्या विशाला युक्तमारुता । प्रभूतसलिला सौम्य प्रभूतकमलोत्पला ॥ 26.16 ॥
iyaṃ giriguhā ramyā viśālā yuktamārutā | prabhūtasalilā saumya prabhūtakamalotpalā || 26.16 ||
This mountain cave is delightful, spacious, and blessed with pleasant breezes, O gentle one; water is abundant here, and red and blue lotuses aplenty.
Shloka 17 (kishkindha.26.17)
कार्तिके समनुप्राप्ते त्वं रावणवधे यत । एष नः समयः सौम्य प्रविश त्वं स्वमालयम् ॥ 26.17 ॥
kārtike samanuprāpte tvaṃ rāvaṇavadhe yata | eṣa naḥ samayaḥ saumya praviśa tvaṃ svamālayam || 26.17 ||
When Karttika comes, you must strive for Ravana's destruction; this is our covenant, O gentle one. For now, enter your own dwelling,
Shloka 18 (kishkindha.26.18)
अभिषिञ्चस्व राज्ये च सुहृदः सम्प्रहर्षय । इति रामाभ्यनुज्ञातः सुग्रीवो वानरर्षभः ॥ 26.18 ॥
abhiṣiñcasva rājye ca suhṛdaḥ sampraharṣaya | iti rāmābhyanujñātaḥ sugrīvo vānararṣabhaḥ || 26.18 ||
be anointed to the kingdom, and gladden your kinsmen." Thus permitted by Rama, Sugriva, bull among monkeys,
Shloka 19 (kishkindha.26.19)
प्रविवेश पुरीं रम्यां किष्किन्धां वालिपालिताम् । तं वानरसहस्राणि प्रविष्टं वानरेश्वरम् ॥ 26.19 ॥
praviveśa purīṃ ramyāṃ kiṣkindhāṃ vālipālitām | taṃ vānarasahasrāṇi praviṣṭaṃ vānareśvaram || 26.19 ||
entered the delightful city of Kishkindha, once ruled by Vali. Thousands of monkeys, entering along with him,
Shloka 20 (kishkindha.26.20)
अभिवार्य प्रविष्टानि सर्वतः प्लवगेश्वरम् । ततः प्रकृतयः सर्वा दृष्ट्वा हरिगणेश्वरम् ॥ 26.20 ॥
abhivārya praviṣṭāni sarvataḥ plavageśvaram | tataḥ prakṛtayaḥ sarvā dṛṣṭvā harigaṇeśvaram || 26.20 ||
surrounded that lord of monkeys, that master of the leaping tribe, joyfully from every side. Then all the subjects, beholding the lord of the monkey-hosts,
Shloka 21 (kishkindha.26.21)
प्रणम्य मूर्ध्ना पतिता वसुधायं समाहिताः । सुग्रीवः प्रकृतीः सर्वाः सम्भाष्योत्थाप्य वीर्यवान् ॥ 26.21 ॥
praṇamya mūrdhnā patitā vasudhāyaṃ samāhitāḥ | sugrīvaḥ prakṛtīḥ sarvāḥ sambhāṣyotthāpya vīryavān || 26.21 ||
bowed their heads and fell, hands folded, upon the ground. Then the mighty Sugriva, speaking to and raising up
Shloka 22 (kishkindha.26.22)
भ्रातुरन्तःपुरं सौम्यं प्रविवेश महाबलः । प्रविष्टं भीमविक्रान्तं सुग्रीवं वानरर्षभम् ॥ 26.22 ॥
bhrāturantaḥpuraṃ saumyaṃ praviveśa mahābalaḥ | praviṣṭaṃ bhīmavikrāntaṃ sugrīvaṃ vānararṣabham || 26.22 ||
all his subjects, that powerful one entered the fair inner apartments of his brother. When that terribly valiant Sugriva, bull among monkeys, had thus entered,
Shloka 23 (kishkindha.26.23)
अभ्यषिञ्चन्त सुहृदः सहस्राक्षमिवामराः । तस्य पाण्डुरमाजह्रुश्छत्रं हेमपरिष्कृतम् ॥ 26.23 ॥
abhyaṣiñcanta suhṛdaḥ sahasrākṣamivāmarāḥ | tasya pāṇḍuramājahruśchatraṃ hemapariṣkṛtam || 26.23 ||
his friends anointed him as the immortals anoint the Thousand-eyed Indra. For him a white parasol, richly wrought in gold, was brought,
Shloka 24 (kishkindha.26.24)
शुक्ले च वालव्यजने हेमदण्डे यशस्करे । तथा रत्नानि सर्वाणि सर्वबीजौषधानि च ॥ 26.24 ॥
śukle ca vālavyajane hemadaṇḍe yaśaskare | tathā ratnāni sarvāṇi sarvabījauṣadhāni ca || 26.24 ||
and glory-bringing white yak-tail fans with golden handles besides; likewise every kind of gem, and every seed and herb,
Shloka 25 (kishkindha.26.25)
सक्षीराणां च वृक्षाणां प्ररोहान् कुसुमानि च । शुक्लानि चैव वस्त्राणि श्वेतं चैवानुलेपनम् ॥ 26.25 ॥
sakṣīrāṇāṃ ca vṛkṣāṇāṃ prarohān kusumāni ca | śuklāni caiva vastrāṇi śvetaṃ caivānulepanam || 26.25 ||
together with the still-milky sprouts of trees, and flowers, and white robes and white unguent as well,
Shloka 26 (kishkindha.26.26)
सुगन्धीनि च माल्यानि स्थलजान्यम्बुजानि च । चन्दनानि च दिव्यानि गन्धांश्च विविधान् बहून् ॥ 26.26 ॥
sugandhīni ca mālyāni sthalajānyambujāni ca | candanāni ca divyāni gandhāṃśca vividhān bahūn || 26.26 ||
fragrant garlands, lotuses born both on land and in water, divine sandal-paste, and many kinds of numerous perfumes,
Shloka 27 (kishkindha.26.27)
अक्षतं जातरूपं च प्रियङ्गुं मधुसर्पिषी । दधि चर्म च वैयाघ्रं परार्घ्यौ चाप्युपानहौ ॥ 26.27 ॥
akṣataṃ jātarūpaṃ ca priyaṅguṃ madhusarpiṣī | dadhi carma ca vaiyāghraṃ parārghyau cāpyupānahau || 26.27 ||
unbroken rice-grain and gold, priyangu-seed, honey and ghee, curd, tiger-skin, and precious sandals as well,
Shloka 28 (kishkindha.26.28)
समालम्भनमादाय गोरोचनमनःशिलाम् । आजग्मुस्तत्र मुदिता वराः कन्याश्च षोडश ॥ 26.28 ॥
samālambhanamādāya gorocanamanaḥśilām | ājagmustatra muditā varāḥ kanyāśca ṣoḍaśa || 26.28 ||
and, bearing unguents, gorochana and red arsenic-pigment, sixteen joyful and lovely maidens arrived there.
Shloka 29 (kishkindha.26.29)
ततस्ते वानरश्रेष्ठमभिषेक्तुं यथाविधि । रत्नैर्वस्त्रैश्च भक्ष्यैश्च तोषयित्वा द्विजर्षभान् ॥ 26.29 ॥
tataste vānaraśreṣṭhamabhiṣektuṃ yathāvidhi | ratnairvastraiśca bhakṣyaiśca toṣayitvā dvijarṣabhān || 26.29 ||
Then, having duly gratified the foremost of the twice-born with jewels, garments, and delicacies, they made ready, as is proper, to anoint
Shloka 30 (kishkindha.26.30)
ततः कुशपरिस्तीर्णं समिद्धं जातवेदसम् । मन्त्रपूतेन हविषा हुत्वा मन्त्रविदो जनाः ॥ 26.30 ॥
tataḥ kuśaparistīrṇaṃ samiddhaṃ jātavedasam | mantrapūtena haviṣā hutvā mantravido janāḥ || 26.30 ||
that foremost of monkeys. Then men versed in sacred formulas, having offered mantra-hallowed oblation into the kindled fire strewn with kusha grass,
Shloka 31 (kishkindha.26.31)
ततो हेमप्रतिष्ठाने वरास्तरणसंवृते । प्रासादशिखरे रम्ये चित्रमाल्योपशोभिते ॥ 26.31 ॥
tato hemapratiṣṭhāne varāstaraṇasaṃvṛte | prāsādaśikhare ramye citramālyopaśobhite || 26.31 ||
then, upon a throne of golden legs, spread with the finest coverings, set atop that lovely palace-summit adorned with many-hued garlands,
Shloka 32 (kishkindha.26.32)
प्राङ्मुखं विधिवन्मन्त्रैः स्थापयित्वा वरासने । नदीनदेभ्यः संहृत्य तीर्थेभ्यश्च समन्ततः ॥ 26.32 ॥
prāṅmukhaṃ vidhivanmantraiḥ sthāpayitvā varāsane | nadīnadebhyaḥ saṃhṛtya tīrthebhyaśca samantataḥ || 26.32 ||
having with mantras duly seated him facing east upon that excellent seat, and having gathered water from rivers, streams, and sacred fords on every side,
Shloka 33 (kishkindha.26.33)
आहृत्य च समुद्रेभ्यः सर्वेभ्यो वानरर्षभाः । अपः कनककुम्भेषु निधाय विमलं जलम् ॥ 26.33 ॥
āhṛtya ca samudrebhyaḥ sarvebhyo vānararṣabhāḥ | apaḥ kanakakumbheṣu nidhāya vimalaṃ jalam || 26.33 ||
and brought also from every ocean, those foremost of monkeys stored that pure water in golden pitchers,
Shloka 34 (kishkindha.26.34)
शुभैर्ऋषभशृङ्गैश्च कलशैश्चैव काञ्चनैः । शास्त्रदृष्टेन विधिना महर्षिविहितेन च ॥ 26.34 ॥
śubhairṛṣabhaśṛṅgaiśca kalaśaiścaiva kāñcanaiḥ | śāstradṛṣṭena vidhinā maharṣivihitena ca || 26.34 ||
and by the rite prescribed in the scriptures and ordained by the great sages, through auspicious bull-horns and golden vessels -
Shloka 35 (kishkindha.26.35)
गजो गवाक्षो गवयः शरभो गन्धमादनः । मैन्दश्च द्विविदश्चैव हनूमाञ्जाम्बवांस्तथा ॥ 26.35 ॥
gajo gavākṣo gavayaḥ śarabho gandhamādanaḥ | maindaśca dvividaścaiva hanūmāñjāmbavāṃstathā || 26.35 ||
Gaja, Gavaksha, Gavaya, Sharabha, Gandhamadana, Mainda and Dvivida, and likewise Hanuman and Jambavan too,
Shloka 36 (kishkindha.26.36)
अभ्यषिञ्चत सुग्रीवं प्रसन्नेन सुगन्धिना । सलिलेन सहस्राक्षं वसवो वासवं यथा ॥ 26.36 ॥
abhyaṣiñcata sugrīvaṃ prasannena sugandhinā | salilena sahasrākṣaṃ vasavo vāsavaṃ yathā || 26.36 ||
anointed Sugriva with that clear and fragrant water, as the Vasus anoint Vasava, the Thousand-eyed one.
Shloka 37 (kishkindha.26.37)
अभिषिक्ते तु सुग्रीवे सर्वे वानरपुङ्गवाः । प्रचुक्रुशुर्महात्मानो हृष्टाः शतसहस्रशः ॥ 26.37 ॥
abhiṣikte tu sugrīve sarve vānarapuṅgavāḥ | pracukruśurmahātmāno hṛṣṭāḥ śatasahasraśaḥ || 26.37 ||
When Sugriva had thus been anointed, all the great-souled bulls among monkeys, overjoyed, raised a mighty acclaim, hundreds and thousands strong.
Shloka 38 (kishkindha.26.38)
रामस्य तु वचः कुर्वन् सुग्रीवो वानरेश्वरः । अङ्गदं सम्परिष्वज्य यौवराज्येऽभ्यषेचयत् ॥ 26.38 ॥
rāmasya tu vacaḥ kurvan sugrīvo vānareśvaraḥ | aṅgadaṃ sampariṣvajya yauvarājye'bhyaṣecayat || 26.38 ||
Sugriva, lord of monkeys, in order to make good Rama's word, embraced Angada affectionately and anointed him as crown prince.
Shloka 39 (kishkindha.26.39)
अङ्गदे चाभिषिक्ते तु सानुक्रोशाः प्लवंगमाः । साधु साध्विति सुग्रीवं महात्मानो ह्यपूजयन् ॥ 26.39 ॥
aṅgade cābhiṣikte tu sānukrośāḥ plavaṃgamāḥ | sādhu sādhviti sugrīvaṃ mahātmāno hyapūjayan || 26.39 ||
When Angada too had been anointed, those compassionate, great-souled monkeys honoured Sugriva, crying, "Well done! Well done!"
Shloka 40 (kishkindha.26.40)
रामं चैव महात्मानं लक्ष्मणं च पुनः पुनः । प्रीताश्च तुष्टुवुः सर्वे तादृशे तत्र वर्तिनि ॥ 26.40 ॥
rāmaṃ caiva mahātmānaṃ lakṣmaṇaṃ ca punaḥ punaḥ | prītāśca tuṣṭuvuḥ sarve tādṛśe tatra vartini || 26.40 ||
And there, while such things were taking place, all of them, filled with affection, again and again extolled the great-souled Rama, and Lakshmana too.
Shloka 41 (kishkindha.26.41)
हृष्टपुष्टजनाकीर्णा पताकाध्वजशोभिता । बभूव नगरी रम्या किष्किन्धा गिरिगह्वरे ॥ 26.41 ॥
hṛṣṭapuṣṭajanākīrṇā patākādhvajaśobhitā | babhūva nagarī ramyā kiṣkindhā girigahvare || 26.41 ||
Thronged with joyful, thriving folk, adorned with banners and flags, the fair city of Kishkindha in its mountain fastness grew resplendent.
Shloka 42 (kishkindha.26.42)
निवेद्य रामाय तदा महात्मने । महाभिषेकं कपिवाहिनीपतिः । रुमां च भार्यामुपलभ्य वीर्यवान् । अवाप राज्यं त्रिदशाधिपो यथा ॥ 26.42 ॥
nivedya rāmāya tadā mahātmane | mahābhiṣekaṃ kapivāhinīpatiḥ | rumāṃ ca bhāryāmupalabhya vīryavān | avāpa rājyaṃ tridaśādhipo yathā || 26.42 ||
Then, having told the great-souled Rama of that grand consecration, the valiant lord of the monkey army, having also regained his wife Ruma, obtained the kingdom, even as the lord of the thirty gods.
