Rama's Lament for Autumn

Sarga 29All sargasSarga 31

Shloka 1 (kishkindha.30.1)

gṛhaṃ praviṣṭe sugrīve vimukte gagane ghanaiḥ | varṣarātre sthito rāmaḥ kāmaśokābhipīḍitaḥ || 30.1 ||

When Sugriva had entered his dwelling and the sky was freed of clouds, Rama, who had spent the rainy nights afflicted by longing and grief,

Shloka 2 (kishkindha.30.2)

pāṇḍuraṃ gaganaṃ dṛṣṭvā vimalaṃ candramaṇḍalam | śāradīṃ rajanīṃ caiva dṛṣṭvā jyotsnānulepanām || 30.2 ||

having beheld the pale sky and the spotless orb of the moon, and having seen the autumn night enamelled with moonlight,

Shloka 3 (kishkindha.30.3)

kāmavṛttaṃ ca sugrīvaṃ naṣṭāṃ ca janakātmajām | dṛṣṭvā kālamatītaṃ ca mumoha paramāturaḥ || 30.3 ||

and having observed Sugriva engrossed in lust, and Janaka's daughter lost to him, and the time slipping away, swooned in his extreme distress.

Shloka 4 (kishkindha.30.4)

sa tu saṃjñāmupāgamya muhūrtānmatimān nṛpaḥ | manaḥsthāmapi vaidehīṃ cintayāmāsa rāghavaḥ || 30.4 ||

But that thoughtful king, Raghava, regaining his senses in a moment, began to think of Vaidehi, who dwelt only in his heart.

Shloka 5 (kishkindha.30.5)

dṛṣṭvā ca vimalaṃ vyoma gatavidyudbalāhakam | sārasārāvasaṃghuṣṭaṃ vilalāpārtayā girā || 30.5 ||

And beholding the sky, spotless, its lightning and dark clouds gone, resounding with the calls of cranes, he lamented in a voice full of pain.

Shloka 6 (kishkindha.30.6)

āsīnaḥ parvatasyāgre hemadhātuvibhūṣite | śāradaṃ gaganaṃ dṛṣṭvā jagāma manasā priyām || 30.6 ||

Seated on the summit of a mountain adorned with gold and other ores, beholding the autumnal sky, his mind journeyed to his beloved:

Shloka 7 (kishkindha.30.7)

sārasārāvasaṃnādaiḥ sārasārāvanādinī | yā''śrame ramate bālā sādya me ramate katham || 30.7 ||

"That young one, whose voice resembles the calls of the sarasa birds, used to delight in the resonance of their cries in our hermitage; how, today, can she delight in them without me?

Shloka 8 (kishkindha.30.8)

puṣpitāṃścāsanān dṛṣṭvā kāñcanāniva nirmalān | kathaṃ sā ramate bālā paśyantī māmapaśyatī || 30.8 ||

On seeing the flawless asana trees flowered as if with gold, seeking me with her eyes but not finding me, how can that young one be happy?

Shloka 9 (kishkindha.30.9)

yā purā kalahaṃsānāṃ kalena kalabhāṣiṇī | budhyate cārusarvāṅgī sādya me ramate katham || 30.9 ||

She, of every enchanting limb, who once used to awaken to the melodious calling of the clucking swans -- how does that beloved of mine now amuse herself?

Shloka 10 (kishkindha.30.10)

niḥsvanaṃ cakravākānāṃ niśamya sahacāriṇām | puṇḍarīkaviśālākṣī kathameṣā bhaviṣyati || 30.10 ||

On hearing the sharp cries of the ruddy geese, who always move in pairs, what will become of her, that broad-eyed one whose eyes are like white lotuses?

Shloka 11 (kishkindha.30.11)

sarāṃsi sarito vāpīḥ kānanāni vanāni ca | tāṃ vinā mṛgaśāvākṣīṃ carannādya sukhaṃ labhe || 30.11 ||

Wandering now among lakes, rivers, pools, groves, and forests, I find no joy today without that fawn-eyed one.

Shloka 12 (kishkindha.30.12)

api tāṃ madviyogācca saukumāryācca bhāminīm | sudūraṃ pīḍayet kāmaḥ śaradguṇanirantaraḥ || 30.12 ||

Surely the god of love, with the plethora of autumn's provocations, must be tormenting that frail and lovely one, separated from me as she is - must he not?"

Shloka 13 (kishkindha.30.13)

evamādi naraśreṣṭho vilalāpa nṛpātmajaḥ | vihaṃga iva sāraṅgaḥ salilaṃ tridaśeśvarāt || 30.13 ||

So, and more besides, that best of men, the king's son, lamented, like a rain-cuckoo pining for water from the lord of the thirty gods.

Shloka 14 (kishkindha.30.14)

tataścañcūrya ramyeṣu phalārthī girisānuṣu | dadarśa paryupāvṛtto lakṣmīvā~llakṣmaṇo'grajam || 30.14 ||

Then Lakshmana, blessed with fortune, who had been roaming the pleasant mountain-terraces in search of fruit, returned and saw his elder brother.

Shloka 15 (kishkindha.30.15)

sa cintayā dussahayā parītaṃ | visaṃjñamekaṃ vijane manasvī | bhrāturviṣādāt tvarito'tidīnaḥ | samīkṣya saumitriruvāca dīnam || 30.15 ||

That noble-hearted Saumitri, seeing him alone in that lonely place, beset with unbearable anguish and utterly bewildered, and made wretched himself by his brother's despair, spoke to him hastily -

Shloka 16 (kishkindha.30.16)

kimārya kāmasya vaśaṃgatena | kimātmapauruṣyaparābhavena | ayaṃ hriyā saṃhriyate samādhiḥ | kimatra yogena nivartate na || 30.16 ||

"What use, noble one, in falling under the sway of passion? What use in this trouncing of your own manly resolve? This despondency is stealing away your self-command; what is to be gained now by retreating from your purpose?

Shloka 17 (kishkindha.30.17)

kriyābhiyogaṃ manasaḥ prasādaṃ | samādhiyogānugataṃ ca kālam | sahāyasāmarthyamadīnasattvaḥ | svakarmahetuṃ ca kuruṣva tāta || 30.17 ||

Engage yourself in action, dear brother, with undaunted spirit; restore your mind's composure, bring time under your own steadfast control, muster the strength of your allies, and let your own effort be the very means to your end.

Shloka 18 (kishkindha.30.18)

na jānakī mānavavaṃśanātha | tvayā sanāthā sulabhā pareṇa | na cāgnicūḍāṃ jvalitāmupetya | na dahyate vīra varārha kaścit || 30.18 ||

Janaki is not one easily won by another while you, lord of the race of men, remain her protector; nor, brave and most worthy one, is anyone left unburned who nears a blazing tongue of fire."

Shloka 19 (kishkindha.30.19)

salakṣaṇaṃ lakṣmaṇamapradhṛṣyaṃ | svabhāvajaṃ vākyamuvāca rāmaḥ | hitaṃ ca pathyaṃ ca nayaprasaktaṃ | sasāmadharmārthasamāhitaṃ ca || 30.19 ||

With these seemly, unshakeable words that sprang from his very nature, expedient, wholesome, abiding in righteousness, full of friendliness and meaning, Lakshmana spoke; and Rama replied to him.

Shloka 20 (kishkindha.30.20)

nissaṃśayaṃ kāryamavekṣitavyaṃ | kriyāviśeṣo'pyanuvartitavyaḥ | na tu pravṛddhasya durāsadasya | kumāra vīryasya phalaṃ ca cintyam || 30.20 ||

"Doubtless the accomplishment of the task must be kept ever in view, and every particular factor bearing on it must be attended to; but the fruit of an undertaking that has grown so unwieldy and so hard to attain must also be weighed, dear boy."

Shloka 21 (kishkindha.30.21)

atha padmapalāśākṣīṃ maithilīmanucintayan | uvāca lakṣmaṇaṃ rāmo mukhena pariśuṣyatā || 30.21 ||

Then, thinking still of Maithili, whose eyes were like lotus-petals, Rama spoke to Lakshmana, his face parched with grief:

Shloka 22 (kishkindha.30.22)

tarpayitvā sahasrākṣaḥ salilena vasuṃdharām | nirvartayitvā sasyāni kṛtakarmā vyavasthitaḥ || 30.22 ||

"Having satisfied the earth with water and having brought the crops to fruition, the Thousand-eyed Indra, his task complete, now rests content -- but mine has not even begun.

Shloka 23 (kishkindha.30.23)

dīrghagambhīranirghoṣāḥ śailadrumapurogamāḥ | visṛjya salilaṃ meghāḥ pariśāntā nṛpātmaja || 30.23 ||

The clouds, roving with their long, profound peals over mountains and trees, having let loose their waters, are now at rest, O prince; but no rest comes to me.

Shloka 24 (kishkindha.30.24)

nīlotpaladalaśyāmāḥ śyāmīkṛtvā diśo daśa | vimadā iva mātaṅgāḥ śāntavegāḥ payodharāḥ || 30.24 ||

The rain-clouds, dark as petals of blue lotus, having blackened the ten quarters, have now grown quiet in their swiftness, like elephants whose rut has passed.

Shloka 25 (kishkindha.30.25)

jalagarbhā mahāvegāḥ kuṭajārjunagandhinaḥ | caritvā viratāḥ saumya vṛṣṭivātāḥ samudyatāḥ || 30.25 ||

Those swift, water-laden winds, fragrant with kutaja and arjuna blossoms, having wandered their course, are now stilled, gentle one.

Shloka 26 (kishkindha.30.26)

ghanānāṃ vāraṇānāṃ ca mayūrāṇāṃ ca lakṣmaṇa | nādaḥ prasravaṇānāṃ ca praśāntaḥ sahasānagha || 30.26 ||

The rumbling of the clouds, of the elephants, of the peacocks, and of the mountain-streams too, O Lakshmana, blameless one, has all at once fallen silent.

Shloka 27 (kishkindha.30.27)

abhivṛṣṭā mahāmeghairnirmalāścitrasānavaḥ | anuliptā ivābhānti girayaścandraraśmibhiḥ || 30.27 ||

Scoured clean by the great rain-clouds, the spotless and richly variegated mountain-terraces shine forth as though enamelled with the moon's own rays.

Shloka 28 (kishkindha.30.28)

śākhāsu saptacchadapādapānāṃ | prabhāsu tārārkaniśākarāṇām | līlāsu caivottamavāraṇānāṃ | śriyaṃ vibhajyādya śaratpravṛttā || 30.28 ||

Dividing its glory today upon the boughs of the seven-leaved plantain, upon the brilliance of stars, sun, and moon, and upon the sportiveness of the finest elephants, autumn has come forth.

Shloka 29 (kishkindha.30.29)

sampratyanekāśrayacitraśobhā | lakṣmīḥ śaratkālaguṇopapannā | sūryāgrahastapratibodhiteṣu | padmākareṣvabhyadhikaṃ vibhāti || 30.29 ||

That glistening, many-splendoured grandeur, born of the qualities of the autumn season, now shines most splendidly in the lotus-pools awakened by the touch of the sun's early rays.

Shloka 30 (kishkindha.30.30)

saptacchadānāṃ kusumopagandhī | ṣaṭpādavṛndairanugīyamānaḥ | mattadvipānāṃ pavanānusārī | darpaṃ vineṣyannadhikaṃ vibhāti || 30.30 ||

Redolent with the flowers of the seven-leaved plantain, accompanied by the singing of swarms of bees, and pursuing the rutting elephants like a following breeze, autumn shines forth with an ever-increasing pride.

Shloka 31 (kishkindha.30.31)

abhyāgataiścāruviśālapakṣaiḥ | smarapriyaiḥ padmarajo'vakīrṇaiḥ | mahānadīnāṃ pulinopayātaiḥ | krīḍanti haṃsāḥ saha cakravākaiḥ || 30.31 ||

With their broad and lovely wings, fond of the lakes, strewn with lotus-pollen, come to the sand-dunes of the great rivers, the swans now sport there together with the ruddy geese.

Shloka 32 (kishkindha.30.32)

madapragalbheṣu ca vāraṇeṣu | gavāṃ samūheṣu ca darpiteṣu | prasannatoyāsu ca nimnagāsu | vibhāti lakṣmīrbahudhā vibhaktā || 30.32 ||

Among the elephants bold with rut, among the proud herds of bulls, and among the clear-flowing streams, the glory of autumn shines forth, manifold and divided.

Shloka 33 (kishkindha.30.33)

nabhaḥ samīkṣyāmbudharairvimuktaṃ | vimuktabarhābharaṇā vaneṣu | priyāsvaraktā vinivṛttaśobhā | gatotsavā dhyānaparā mayūrāḥ || 30.33 ||

Beholding the sky now freed of the rain-clouds, the peacocks of the forest have shed their plumaged ornaments; grown indifferent to their mates, their splendour departed, their festivity gone, they now sit lost in brooding.

Shloka 34 (kishkindha.30.34)

manojñagandhaiḥ priyakairanalpaiḥ | puṣpātibhārāvanatāgraśākhaiḥ | suvarṇagaurairnayanābhirāmairudyotitānīva vanāntarāṇi || 30.34 ||

With their sweetly fragrant, abundant priyaka-blossoms whose weight has bent down the tips of the boughs, golden-yellow and delightful to the eye, the interiors of the forest seem lit up as though illumined by lamps.

Shloka 35 (kishkindha.30.35)

priyānvitānāṃ nalinīpriyāṇāṃ | vane priyāṇāṃ kusumodgatānām | madotkaṭānāṃ madalālasānāṃ | gajottamānāṃ gatayo'dya mandāḥ || 30.35 ||

Fond of their mates, fond of the lotus-lakes and the forest, excited by the fragrance of flowers, intoxicated and languorous with rut, the finest of elephants now move with slackened pace.

Shloka 36 (kishkindha.30.36)

vyaktaṃ nabhaḥ śastravidhautavarṇaṃ | kṛśapravāhāni nadījalāni | kahlāraśītāḥ pavanāḥ pravānti | tamo vimuktāśca diśaḥ prakāśāḥ || 30.36 ||

Clear is the sky, its hue as if scoured like a burnished weapon; thinned are the flows of the rivers; breezes cool as red lotuses are blowing; and the quarters, freed from darkness, have grown bright.

Shloka 37 (kishkindha.30.37)

sūryātapakrāmaṇanaṣṭapaṅkā | bhūmiścirodghāṭitasāndrareṇuḥ | anyonyavaireṇa samāyutānāmudyogakālo'dya narādhipānām || 30.37 ||

The mud, dried away by the heat of the sun, the earth thick with dust long confined -- now, for kings bound to one another by mutual enmity, has come the time to bestir themselves.

Shloka 38 (kishkindha.30.38)

śaradguṇāpyāyitarūpaśobhāḥ | praharṣitāḥ pāṃsusamutthitāṅgāḥ | madotkaṭāḥ samprati yuddhalubdhā | vṛṣā gavāṃ madhyagatā nadanti || 30.38 ||

Their handsomeness enhanced by autumn's own virtue, their bodies gladly covered in dust, intoxicated and now eager for combat, the bulls bellow, standing amid the cows.

Shloka 39 (kishkindha.30.39)

samanmathā tīvratarānurāgā | kulānvitā mandagatiḥ kareṇuḥ | madānvitaṃ samparivārya yāntaṃ | vaneṣu bhartāramanuprayāti || 30.39 ||

Passionate, her attachment ever more intense, the slow-paced she-elephant, together with her kind, follows close behind her ruttish mate as he moves through the forest.

Shloka 40 (kishkindha.30.40)

tyaktvā varāṇyātmavibhūṣitāni | barhāṇi tīropagatā nadīnām | nirbhartsyamānā iva sārasaughaiḥ | prayānti dīnā vimanā mayūrāḥ || 30.40 ||

Casting off their splendid plumaged tails, which are their own ornament, the peacocks, arriving near the riverbanks, go about dispirited and despondent, as though intimidated by the flocks of sarasa birds.

Shloka 41 (kishkindha.30.41)

vitrāsya kāraṇḍavacakravākān | mahāravairbhinnakaṭā gajendrāḥ | sarassubaddhāmbujabhūṣaṇeṣu | vikṣobhya vikṣobhya jalaṃ pibanti || 30.41 ||

Startling the karandava and cakravaka birds with their mighty trumpeting, the lordly elephants with their temples in rut churn and churn again the waters of the lakes adorned with tightly-clustered lotuses, and drink.

Shloka 42 (kishkindha.30.42)

vyapetapaṅkāsu savālukāsu | prasannatoyāsu sagokulāsu | sasārasārāvavināditāsu | nadīṣu haṃsā nipatanti hṛṣṭāḥ || 30.42 ||

Freed of their silt, sandy-banked, their waters clear, thronged with herds of cattle, resounding with the calls of sarasa birds, the joyful swans now dive deep into such rivers.

Shloka 43 (kishkindha.30.43)

nadīghanaprasravaṇodakānāmatipravṛddhānilabarhiṇānām | plavaṃgamānāṃ ca gatotsavānāṃ | dhruvaṃ ravāḥ samprati sampraṇaṣṭāḥ || 30.43 ||

The noises of rivers, of clouds, of mountain-cascades, and the once-swollen gusts of wind, and the screaming of peacocks together with the croaking of frogs -- all these, surely, have now completely died away.

Shloka 44 (kishkindha.30.44)

anekavarṇāḥ suvinaṣṭakāyā | navoditeṣvambudhareṣu naṣṭāḥ | kṣudhārditā ghoraviṣā bilebhyaściroṣitā viprasaranti sarpāḥ || 30.44 ||

Their bodies wasted, of many hues, hidden away when the new rain-clouds first arose, tormented by hunger, those dreadfully venomous serpents, long confined, now come slithering forth.

Shloka 45 (kishkindha.30.45)

cañcaccandrakarasparśaharṣonmīlitatārakā | aho rāgavatī saṃdhyā jahāti svayamambaram || 30.45 ||

Ah, see how the twilight, a damsel in love, unfolding her stars in delight at the touch of the shimmering moonbeam, herself releases her rosy hue from the sky!

Shloka 46 (kishkindha.30.46)

rātriḥ śaśāṅkoditasaumyavaktrā | tārāgaṇonmīlitacārunetrā | jyotsnāṃśukaprāvaraṇā vibhāti | nārīva śuklāṃśukasaṃvṛtāṅgī || 30.46 ||

Night, with the risen moon as her gentle face, myriad stars as her lovely twinkling eyes, and veiled in a robe of moonbeams, shines forth like a woman wrapped about in garments of white.

Shloka 47 (kishkindha.30.47)

vipakvaśāliprasavāni bhuktvā | praharṣitā sārasacārupaṅktiḥ | nabhaḥ samākrāmati śīghravegā | vātāvadhūtā grathiteva mālā || 30.47 ||

Having fed on the fully-ripened grain of the rice-fields, the delighted and lovely rows of sarasa birds now sweep swiftly across the sky, like a garland strung together and shaken loose by the wind.

Shloka 48 (kishkindha.30.48)

suptaikahaṃsaṃ kumudairupetaṃ | mahāhradasthaṃ salilaṃ vibhāti | ghanairvimuktaṃ niśi pūrṇacandraṃ | tārāgaṇākīrṇamivāntarikṣam || 30.48 ||

The water of a great lake, thick with white lotuses, with a single swan asleep upon it, shines like the night sky released from its clouds, star-strewn, and bearing the full moon.

Shloka 49 (kishkindha.30.49)

prakīrṇahaṃsākulamekhalānāṃ | prabuddhapadmotpalamālinīnām | vāpyuttamānāmadhikādya lakṣmīrvarāṅganānāmiva bhūṣitānām || 30.49 ||

With swans scattered about like a swaying girdle, and garlanded with fully-blossomed red and blue lotuses, the splendour of the finest of ponds today is heightened, like that of fine women adorned with ornaments.

Shloka 50 (kishkindha.30.50)

veṇusvaravyañjitatūryamiśraḥ | pratyūṣakāle'nilasampravṛttaḥ | sammūrchito gargaragovṛṣāṇāmanyonyamāpūrayatīva śabdaḥ || 30.50 ||

Mingled with the notes of flutes, arising with the breeze at the hour of dawn, the swelling sound of cowbells and lowing cattle seems to fill the air, each note surpassing the other.

Shloka 51 (kishkindha.30.51)

navairnadīnāṃ kusumaprahāsairvyādhūyamānairmṛdumārutena | dhautāmalakṣaumapaṭaprakāśaiḥ | kūlāni kāśairupaśobhitāni || 30.51 ||

Adorned with fresh reed-flowers, like smiles, swaying in the soft breeze, and shining like a washed and spotless silken cloth, the riverbanks are graced with new beds of reeds.

Shloka 52 (kishkindha.30.52)

vanapracaṇḍā madhupānaśauṇḍāḥ | priyānvitāḥ ṣaṭcaraṇāḥ prahṛṣṭāḥ | vaneṣu mattāḥ pavanānuyātrāṃ | kurvanti padmāsanareṇugaurāḥ || 30.52 ||

Rampant in the forest, roguish with drinking nectar, joyful, yellowed with the pollen of lotus and asana flowers, the honeybees now journey along with their mates, borne upon the breeze.

Shloka 53 (kishkindha.30.53)

jalaṃ prasannaṃ kusumaprahāsaṃ | krauñcasvanaṃ śālivanaṃ vipakvam | mṛduśca vāyurvimalaśca candraḥ | śaṃsanti varṣavyapanītakālam || 30.53 ||

Clear waters, flowers smiling open, the calling of the kraunca birds, the rice-fields ripened, the breeze grown gentle, the moon grown bright -- all these proclaim that the season of rains has passed away.

Shloka 54 (kishkindha.30.54)

mīnopasaṃdarśitamekhalānāṃ | nadīvadhūnāṃ gatayo'dya mandāḥ | kāntopabhuktālasagāminīnāṃ | prabhātakāleṣviva kāminīnām || 30.54 ||

Their girdles now shown forth by the fish within them, the river-brides today move slowly, like languorous women, tired from their lovers' embrace, sauntering at the hour of dawn.

Shloka 55 (kishkindha.30.55)

sacakravākāni saśaivalāni | kāśairdukūlairiva saṃvṛtāni | sapatrarekhāṇi sarocanāni | vadhūmukhānīva nadīmukhāni || 30.55 ||

With the ruddy geese and the river-weeds upon them, and half-veiled as if in silken cloth by the reed-beds, streaked as with lines of leaf-painting and touched with a glow, the river-mouths are like the faces of young brides.

Shloka 56 (kishkindha.30.56)

praphullabāṇāsanacitriteṣu | prahṛṣṭaṣaṭpādanikūjiteṣu | gṛhītacāpodyatadaṇḍacaṇḍaḥ | pracaṇḍacāpo'dya vaneṣu kāmaḥ || 30.56 ||

In these forests, painted with flowering bana and asana trees, and murmurous with the delighted humming of bees, the god of love now roams unimpeded, his bow raised, ready to strike.

Shloka 57 (kishkindha.30.57)

lokaṃ suvṛṣṭyā paritoṣayitvā | nadīstaṭākāni ca pūrayitvā | niṣpannasasyāṃ vasudhāṃ ca kṛtvā | tyaktvā nabhastoyadharāḥ praṇaṣṭāḥ || 30.57 ||

Having gladdened the world with abundant rain, having filled the rivers and the tanks, and having brought the earth to yield its harvest, the water-bearing clouds have forsaken the sky and vanished.

Shloka 58 (kishkindha.30.58)

darśayanti śarannadyaḥ pulināni śanaiḥ śanaiḥ | navasaṃgamasavrīḍā jaghanānīva yoṣitaḥ || 30.58 ||

Slowly, slowly, the autumnal rivers now reveal their sandbanks, like shy young brides slowly revealing their hips at a new tryst.

Shloka 59 (kishkindha.30.59)

prasannasalilāḥ saumya kurarābhivināditāḥ | cakravākagaṇākīrṇā vibhānti salilāśayāḥ || 30.59 ||

Their waters clear, gentle one, resounding with the cries of fish-hawks, and teeming with flocks of ruddy geese, the lakes now shine forth.

Shloka 60 (kishkindha.30.60)

anyonyabaddhavairāṇāṃ jigīṣūṇāṃ nṛpātmaja | udyogasamayaḥ saumya pārthivānāmupasthitaḥ || 30.60 ||

For kings bound to one another by mutual hostility, each desirous of victory over the other, gentle one, the time for military endeavour has now come, O prince.

Shloka 61 (kishkindha.30.61)

iyaṃ sā prathamā yātrā pārthivānāṃ nṛpātmaja | na ca paśyāmi sugrīvamudyogaṃ ca tathāvidham || 30.61 ||

This, O prince, is the very season in which kings first set forth on campaign; and yet I see no such striving, no such endeavour, in Sugriva.

Shloka 62 (kishkindha.30.62)

asanāḥ saptaparṇāśca kovidārāśca puṣpitāḥ | dṛśyante bandhujīvāśca śyāmāśca girisānuṣu || 30.62 ||

Asana trees, seven-leaved plantains, and kovidara trees, all in bloom, and bandhujiva trees and dark shyama creepers too, are seen upon the mountain-terraces.

Shloka 63 (kishkindha.30.63)

haṃsasārasacakrāhvaiḥ kuraraiśca samantataḥ | pulinānyavakīrṇāni nadīnāṃ paśya lakṣmaṇa || 30.63 ||

See, Lakshmana, how the sand-dunes of the rivers are strewn all over with swans, sarasa birds, cakravakas, and kraunca birds as well.

Shloka 64 (kishkindha.30.64)

catvāro vārṣikā māsā gatā varṣaśatopamāḥ | mama śokābhitaptasya tathā sītāmapaśyataḥ || 30.64 ||

Four months of the rainy season have gone by, and to me, seething in grief and unable to see Sita, they seemed like a hundred years.

Shloka 65 (kishkindha.30.65)

cakravākīva bhartāraṃ pṛṣṭhato'nugatā vanam | viṣamaṃ daṇḍakāraṇyamudyānamiva cāṅganā || 30.65 ||

Like a female ruddy-goose that follows behind her mate, she followed me, her husband, into the forest -- into the perilous Dandaka wilderness, as though it were a pleasure-garden.

Shloka 66 (kishkindha.30.66)

priyāvihīne duḥkhārte hṛtarājye vivāsite | kṛpāṃ na kurute rājā sugrīvo mayi lakṣmaṇa || 30.66 ||

Bereft of my beloved, tormented by grief, my kingdom seized, and driven into exile, king Sugriva, Lakshmana, shows me no compassion.

Shloka 67 (kishkindha.30.67)

anātho hṛtarājyo'yaṃ rāvaṇena ca dharṣitaḥ | dīno dūragṛhaḥ kāmī māṃ caiva śaraṇaṃ gataḥ || 30.67 ||

'He is helpless, his kingdom seized, oppressed by Ravana, wretched, come from a distant home, lovesick, and has taken refuge in me alone' -- so, perhaps, Sugriva thinks of me.

Shloka 68 (kishkindha.30.68)

ityetaiḥ kāraṇaiḥ saumya sugrīvasya durātmanaḥ | ahaṃ vānararājasya paribhūtaḥ paraṃtapaḥ || 30.68 ||

For these reasons, gentle Lakshmana, scorcher of foes, I have, it seems, been slighted by that base-minded king of monkeys, Sugriva.

Shloka 69 (kishkindha.30.69)

sa kālaṃ parisaṃkhyāya sītāyāḥ parimārgaṇe | kṛtārthaḥ samayaṃ kṛtvā durmatirnāvavudhyate || 30.69 ||

He calculated well the time set for the search of Sita, and having made that covenant, yet, once his own end was achieved, that base-minded one is now heedless of it.

Shloka 70 (kishkindha.30.70)

sa kiṣkindhāṃ praviśya tvaṃ brūhi vānarapuṅgavam | mūrkhaṃ grāmyasukhe saktaṃ sugrīvaṃ vacanānmama || 30.70 ||

Go, then, into Kishkindha, and speak, in my very words, to that arch-monkey Sugriva, that fool tangled up in coarse pleasures:

Shloka 71 (kishkindha.30.71)

arthināmupapannānāṃ pūrvaṃ cāpyupakāriṇām | āśāṃ saṃśrutya yo hanti sa loke puruṣādhamaḥ || 30.71 ||

'"He who breaks the hope of those who came to him for shelter, and even of those who once helped him -- he is the vilest of men in this world.

Shloka 72 (kishkindha.30.72)

śubhaṃ vā yadi vā pāpaṃ yo hi vākyamudīritam | satyena parigṛhṇāti sa vīraḥ puruṣottamaḥ || 30.72 ||

He who, whether the word spoken be for good or ill, truly makes it good by his own action -- he indeed is the champion, the foremost among men.

Shloka 73 (kishkindha.30.73)

kṛtārthā hyakṛtārthānāṃ mitrāṇāṃ na bhavanti ye | tān mṛtānapi kravyādāḥ kṛtaghnān nopabhuñjate || 30.73 ||

Those who, having achieved their own ends through friends, do not stand by those same friends while their ends remain unachieved -- even carrion-eating creatures will not feed upon the flesh of such ingrates when they are dead.

Shloka 74 (kishkindha.30.74)

nūnaṃ kāñcanapṛṣṭhasya vikṛṣṭasya mayā raṇe | draṣṭumicchasi cāpasya rūpaṃ vidyudgaṇopamam || 30.74 ||

Surely you now wish to see, in this very battle, the aspect of my gold-backed bow, drawn taut, resembling a cluster of lightning-flashes.

Shloka 75 (kishkindha.30.75)

ghoraṃ jyātalanirghoṣaṃ kruddhasya mama saṃyuge | nirghoṣamiva vajrasya punaḥ saṃśrotumicchasi || 30.75 ||

Once more you wish to hear that dreadful twang of my bowstring, resounding like the crash of the thunderbolt, when in fury I clang it in battle.

Shloka 76 (kishkindha.30.76)

kāmamevaṃgate'pyasya parijñāte parākrame | tvatsahāyasya me vīra na cintā syānnṛpātmaja || 30.76 ||

Be that as it may, even though he knows full well what my valour is, O prince, O hero, having you as my companion I have no cause for alarm.

Shloka 77 (kishkindha.30.77)

yadarthamayamārambhaḥ kṛtaḥ parapuraṃjaya | samayaṃ nābhijānāti kṛtārthaḥ plavageśvaraḥ || 30.77 ||

That lord of the leaping tribes, O conqueror of hostile cities, having achieved his own end, no longer even recognises the very purpose for which this whole undertaking was begun.

Shloka 78 (kishkindha.30.78)

varṣāḥ samayakālaṃ tu pratijñāya harīśvaraḥ | vyatītāṃścaturo māsān viharan nāvabudhyate || 30.78 ||

Having promised to act once the rains were over, that lord of monkeys, absorbed in his pleasures, remains oblivious that the four months have already slipped away.

Shloka 79 (kishkindha.30.79)

sāmātyapariṣatkrīḍan pānamevopasevate | śokadīneṣu nāsmāsu sugrīvaḥ kurute dayām || 30.79 ||

Sporting with the assembly of his ministers, he devotes himself only to drink, and shows no compassion at all to us, who are wretched with grief.

Shloka 80 (kishkindha.30.80)

ucyatāṃ gaccha sugrīvastvayā vīra mahābala | mama roṣasya yadrūpaṃ brūyāścainamidaṃ vacaḥ || 30.80 ||

Go, O hero of great might, and let Sugriva be told through you the very shape my fury has now taken, and let this word too be spoken to him -"'

Shloka 81 (kishkindha.30.81)

"'The path by which slain Vali went is not so narrow that it has closed up, O Sugriva; keep to your commitment, and do not follow the path of Vali.

Shloka 82 (kishkindha.30.82)

eka eva raṇe vālī śareṇa nihato mayā | tvāṃ tu satyādatikrāntaṃ haniṣyāmi sabāndhavam || 30.82 ||

Vali alone was slain by me, single-handed, with a single arrow in battle; but you, having transgressed the truth, I shall slay together with all your kinsmen.

Shloka 83 (kishkindha.30.83)

yadevaṃ vihite kārye yaddhitaṃ puruṣarṣabha | tat tad brūhi naraśreṣṭha tvara kālavyatikramaḥ || 30.83 ||

Whatever, then, is fitting to be said in this matter, O best of men, O foremost of men, say it now; make haste, for time is passing."'

Shloka 84 (kishkindha.30.84)

kuruṣva satyaṃ mama vānareśvara | pratiśrutaṃ dharmamavekṣya śāśvatam | mā vālinaṃ pretagato yamakṣaye | tvamadya paśyermama coditaḥ śaraiḥ || 30.84 ||

Render true, O king of monkeys, in accordance with the eternal law you yourself acknowledged, what you have promised me; else, driven this very day by my arrows to your death, you shall behold Vali in the realm of Yama."'

Shloka 85 (kishkindha.30.85)

sa pūrvajaṃ tīvravivṛddhakopaṃ | lālapyamānaṃ prasamīkṣya dīnam | cakāra tīvrāṃ matimugratejā | harīśvare mānavavaṃśavardhanaḥ || 30.85 ||

Beholding his elder brother, wretched, prating on in an anger grown ever more intense, that fiercely resplendent Lakshmana, augmenter of the race of Manu, resolved on a stern and unyielding course toward the king of monkeys.
