Lakshmana's Fury
Shloka 1 (kishkindha.31.1)
sa kāminaṃ dīnamadīnasattvaṃ śokābhipannaṃ samudīrṇakopam| narendrasūnurnaradevaputraṃ rāmānujaḥ pūrvajamityuvāca|| 31.1 ||
To his elder brother, prince Rama — who, though unbroken in resolve, had grown pitiable with longing, was overwhelmed with grief, and whose anger had now flared to its height — the princely Lakshmana, Rama's younger brother, spoke these words.
Shloka 2 (kishkindha.31.2)
na vānaraḥ sthāsyati sādhuvṛtte na manyate karmaphalānuṣaṅgān| na bhokṣyate vānararājyalakṣmīṃ tathā hi nābhikramate'sya buddhiḥ|| 31.2 ||
"This forest-dweller Sugriva will not hold to the conduct of the honorable; he pays no heed to the reward that your deed has brought him; he will not even enjoy the splendor of his monkey kingdom — clearly, his understanding has become stagnant.
Shloka 3 (kishkindha.31.3)
matikṣayād grāmyasukheṣu sakta- stava prasādāt pratikārabuddhiḥ| hato'grajaṃ paśyatu vīravālinaṃ na rājyamevaṃ viguṇasya deyam|| 31.3 ||
With his judgment ruined and lost in base pleasures, he never even considers repaying your kindness. Let him be slain and sent to join his brave brother Vali — a kingdom should never be given to one so devoid of virtue.
Shloka 4 (kishkindha.31.4)
na dhāraye kopamudīrṇavegaṃ nihanmi sugrīvamasatyamadya| haripravīraiḥ saha vāliputro narendraputryā vicayaṃ karotu|| 31.4 ||
I can no longer restrain this surging anger — today I shall kill this faithless Sugriva, and let Vali's son Angada, with the finest of the monkey warriors, carry out the search for the princess." Thus spoke Lakshmana.
Shloka 5 (kishkindha.31.5)
tamāttabāṇāsanamutpatantaṃ niveditārthaṃ raṇacaṇḍakopam| uvāca rāmaḥ paravīrahantā svavīkṣitaṃ sānunayaṃ ca vākyam|| 31.5 ||
Then Rama, slayer of enemy heroes, spoke this well-considered and gently persuasive reply to Lakshmana, who — having declared his intent, seized his bow, and blazing with battle-fury — had sprung up to go.
Shloka 6 (kishkindha.31.6)
nahi vai tvadvidho loke pāpamevaṃ samācaret| kopamāryeṇa yo hanti sa vīraḥ puruṣottamaḥ|| 31.6 ||
"One such as you would never commit so grave a wrong in this world. He who, with noble bearing, slays his own anger — he alone is truly valiant, the best among men.
Shloka 7 (kishkindha.31.7)
nedamatra tvayā grāhyaṃ sādhuvṛttena lakṣmaṇa| tāṃ prītimanuvartasva pūrvavṛttaṃ ca saṃgatam|| 31.7 ||
Lakshmana, you are a man of righteous conduct — it does not become you to see this matter so. Hold instead to that old friendship and the bond already formed between us.
Shloka 8 (kishkindha.31.8)
sāmopahitayā vācā rūkṣāṇi parivarjayan| vaktumarhasi sugrīvaṃ vyatītaṃ kālaparyaye|| 31.8 ||
Setting aside all harshness, you should speak to Sugriva only in conciliatory words — for his fault, after all, is no more than letting the appointed time slip by." Thus Rama counselled Lakshmana.
Shloka 9 (kishkindha.31.9)
so'grajenānuśiṣṭārtho yathāvat puruṣarṣabhaḥ| praviveśa purīṃ vīro lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā|| 31.9 ||
Thus duly counselled by his elder brother, that heroic destroyer of enemy warriors, Lakshmana, foremost among men, entered the city of Kishkindha.
Shloka 10 (kishkindha.31.10)
tataḥ śubhamatiḥ prājño bhrātuḥ priyahite rataḥ| lakṣmaṇaḥ pratisaṃrabdho jagāma bhavanaṃ kapeḥ|| 31.10 ||
Then that pure-minded, wise Lakshmana, ever devoted to his brother's welfare, swallowed his fury and made his way toward the palace of the monkey king.
Shloka 11 (kishkindha.31.11)
śakrabāṇāsanaprakhyaṃ dhanuḥ kālāntakopamam| pragṛhya giriśṛṅgābhaṃ mandaraḥ sānumāniva|| 31.11 ||
Bearing his bow — as radiant as Indra's own and as terrible as Death itself — he seemed, with it in hand, like Mount Mandara crowned with its peaks.
Shloka 12 (kishkindha.31.12)
yathoktakārī vacanamuttaraṃ caiva sottaram| bṛhaspatisamo buddhyā matvā rāmānujastadā|| 31.12 ||
Lakshmana, ever obedient to Rama's word and equal to Brihaspati in wisdom, turned over in his mind the words he would speak, Sugriva's likely reply, and his own answer to it.
Shloka 13 (kishkindha.31.13)
kāmakrodhasamutthena bhrātuḥ kopāgninā vṛtaḥ| prabhañjana ivāprītaḥ prayayau lakṣmaṇastataḥ|| 31.13 ||
Wrapped in the fire of fury kindled by his brother's love-born grief, discontented Lakshmana surged forward like a raging storm-wind.
Shloka 14 (kishkindha.31.14)
sālatālāśvakarṇāṃśca tarasā pātayan balāt| paryasyan girikūṭāni drumānanyāṃśca vegitaḥ|| 31.14 ||
In his headlong speed he tore down sala, tala, and ashvakarna trees by sheer force, uprooting mountain-crests and other trees in his path.
Shloka 15 (kishkindha.31.15)
śilāśca śakalīkurvan padbhyāṃ gaja ivāśugaḥ| dūramekapadaṃ tyaktvā yayau kāryavaśād drutam|| 31.15 ||
Shattering boulders underfoot, striding in great single steps like a swift-moving elephant, he pressed on rapidly, driven by the urgency of his mission.
Shloka 16 (kishkindha.31.16)
tāmapaśyad balākīrṇāṃ harirājamahāpurīm| durgāmikṣvākuśārdūlaḥ kiṣkindhāṃ girisaṃkaṭe|| 31.16 ||
There, amid the mountain defile, the tiger of the Ikshvaku line beheld Kishkindha — that impregnable, magnificent capital of the monkey king, teeming with his army.
Shloka 17 (kishkindha.31.17)
roṣāt prasphuramāṇoṣṭhaḥ sugrīvaṃ prati lakṣmaṇaḥ| dadarśa vānarān bhīmān kiṣkindhāyāṃ bahiścarān|| 31.17 ||
His lips quivering with rage against Sugriva, Lakshmana caught sight of the fearsome monkeys roaming about the outskirts of Kishkindha.
Shloka 18 (kishkindha.31.18)
taṃ dṛṣṭvā vānarāḥ sarve lakṣmaṇaṃ puruṣarṣabham| śailaśṛṅgāṇi śataśaḥ pravṛddhāṃśca mahīruhān| jagṛhuḥ kuñjaraprakhyā vānarāḥ parvatāntare|| 31.18 ||
At the sight of Lakshmana, foremost of men, all those elephantine monkeys dwelling among the mountain caves snatched up hundreds of mountain-crests and towering trees.
Shloka 19 (kishkindha.31.19)
tān gṛhītapraharaṇān sarvān dṛṣṭvā tu lakṣmaṇaḥ| babhūva dviguṇaṃ kruddho bahvindhana ivānalaḥ|| 31.19 ||
Seeing them all seize such weapons, Lakshmana's fury doubled, like a fire fed with fresh fuel.
Shloka 20 (kishkindha.31.20)
taṃ te bhayaparītāṅgā kṣubdhaṃ dṛṣṭvā plavaṃgamāḥ| kālamṛtyuyugāntābhaṃ śataśo vidrutā diśaḥ|| 31.20 ||
Seeing him so enraged, terrible as death itself, as the fire that ends an age, those monkeys, their bodies seized with terror, scattered by the hundreds in every direction.
Shloka 21 (kishkindha.31.21)
tataḥ sugrīvabhavanaṃ praviśya haripuṃgavāḥ| krodhamāgamanaṃ caiva lakṣmaṇasya nyavedayan|| 31.21 ||
Then some of the finest monkeys went into Sugriva's palace and reported to him both the arrival of Lakshmana and his fury.
Shloka 22 (kishkindha.31.22)
tārayā sahitaḥ kāmī saktaḥ kapivṛṣastadā| na teṣāṃ kapisiṃhānāṃ śuśrāva vacanaṃ tadā|| 31.22 ||
But at that hour Sugriva, foremost of monkeys, absorbed in pleasure and lost in Tara's company, paid no heed at all to what those lion-like monkeys said.
Shloka 23 (kishkindha.31.23)
tataḥ sacivasaṃdiṣṭā harayo romaharṣaṇāḥ| girikuñjarameghābhā nagarānniryayustadā|| 31.23 ||
Then, at the ministers' bidding, those hair-raising monkeys — huge as mountains, elephants, and storm-clouds — went out from the city.
Shloka 24 (kishkindha.31.24)
nakhadaṃṣṭrāyudhāḥ sarve vīrā vikṛtadarśanāḥ| sarve śārdūladarpāśca sarve ca vikṛtānanāḥ|| 31.24 ||
All those warriors, armed only with fang and claw, were dreadful to look upon — every one of them carrying a tiger's pride, every one with a fearsome, contorted face.
Shloka 25 (kishkindha.31.25)
daśanāgabalāḥ kecit kecid daśaguṇottarāḥ| kecinnāgasahasrasya babhūvustulyavarcasaḥ|| 31.25 ||
Some among them had the strength of ten elephants, some ten times that, and some equalled the might of a thousand elephants.
Shloka 26 (kishkindha.31.26)
tatastaiḥ kapibhirvyāptāṃ drumahastairmahābalaiḥ| apaśyallakṣmaṇaḥ kruddhaḥ kiṣkindhāṃ tāṃ durāsadām|| 31.26 ||
Then the enraged Lakshmana saw how Kishkindha, that formidable city, had been made impassable, crowded with those mighty monkeys brandishing trees in their hands.
Shloka 27 (kishkindha.31.27)
tataste harayaḥ sarve prākāraparikhāntarāt| niṣkramyodagrasattvāstu tasthurāviṣkṛtaṃ tadā|| 31.27 ||
Then all those monkeys, their spirits high, came out from within the city's rampart and moat, and stood openly arrayed before him.
Shloka 28 (kishkindha.31.28)
sugrīvasya pramādaṃ ca pūrvajasyārthamātmavān| dṛṣṭvā krodhavaśaṃ vīraḥ punareva jagāma saḥ|| 31.28 ||
Recalling Sugriva's negligence and his own elder brother's purpose, the wise and valiant Lakshmana, at the sight of them, again gave way to anger.
Shloka 29 (kishkindha.31.29)
sa dīrghoṣṇamahocchvāsaḥ kopasaṃraktalocanaḥ| babhūva naraśārdūlaḥ sadhūma iva pāvakaḥ|| 31.29 ||
Breathing long, hot, heaving breaths, his eyes reddened with fury, that tiger among men seemed like a smoldering fire wreathed in smoke.
Shloka 30 (kishkindha.31.30)
bāṇaśalyasphurajjihvaḥ sāyakāsanabhogavān| svatejoviṣasambhūtaḥ pañcāsya iva pannagaḥ|| 31.30 ||
With his arrowheads like darting tongues, his bow curved like a serpent's hood, and his own blazing fury swelling like venom, he seemed a five-headed serpent.
Shloka 31 (kishkindha.31.31)
taṃ dīptamiva kālāgniṃ nāgendramiva kopitam| samāsādyāṅgadastrāsād viṣādamagamat param|| 31.31 ||
Approaching him — blazing like the fire of doomsday, terrible as an enraged king of serpents — Angada was overcome with deep dismay born of fear.
Shloka 32 (kishkindha.31.32)
so'ṅgadaṃ roṣatāmrākṣaḥ saṃdideśa mahāyaśāḥ| sugrīvaḥ kathyatāṃ vatsa mamāgamanamityuta|| 31.32 ||
Then that greatly renowned Lakshmana, his eyes red with anger, said to Angada, "Go, my child, and tell Sugriva of my arrival."
Shloka 33 (kishkindha.31.33)
eṣa rāmānujaḥ prāptastvatsakāśamariṃdama| bhrāturvyasanasaṃtapto dvāri tiṣṭhati lakṣmaṇaḥ|| 31.33 ||
"'O destroyer of foes, know that this Lakshmana, Rama's brother, has come to your presence, tormented by his brother's suffering, and stands waiting at your door.'
Shloka 34 (kishkindha.31.34)
tasya vākyaṃ yadi ruciḥ kriyatāṃ sādhu vānara| ityuktvā śīghramāgaccha vatsa vākyamariṃdama|| 31.34 ||
'If it please you, O foremost of monkeys, hear his words with due regard' — having said this, my child, come back to me quickly." Thus Lakshmana instructed Angada.
Shloka 35 (kishkindha.31.35)
lakṣmaṇasya vacaḥ śrutvā śokāviṣṭo'ṅgado'bravīt| pituḥ samīpamāgamya saumitrirayamāgataḥ|| 31.35 ||
Hearing Lakshmana's words, Angada, overcome with grief, went to his father and said, "Saumitri Lakshmana has come."
Shloka 36 (kishkindha.31.36)
athāṅgadastasya sutīvravācā sambhrāntabhāvaḥ paridīnavaktraḥ| nirgatya pūrvaṃ nṛpatestarasvī tato rumāyāścaraṇau vavande|| 31.36 ||
Bewildered and downcast at Lakshmana's harsh words, the valiant Angada went out and bowed first at the feet of the king, his father, and then at the feet of Ruma.
Shloka 37 (kishkindha.31.37)
saṃgṛhya pādau piturugratejā jagrāha mātuḥ punareva pādau| pādau rumāyāśca nipīḍayitvā nivedayāmāsa tatastadartham|| 31.37 ||
The fiery Angada clasped his father's feet, then his mother Tara's feet, and pressed Ruma's feet as well, and only then did he tell them the reason — Lakshmana's message.
Shloka 38 (kishkindha.31.38)
But Sugriva, wrapped in drowsy stupor, could not fully grasp it — for he was besotted with drink and bewildered still by passion.
Shloka 39 (kishkindha.31.39)
tataḥ kilakilāṃ cakrurlakṣmaṇaṃ prekṣya vānarāḥ| prasādayantastaṃ kruddhaṃ bhayamohitacetasaḥ|| 31.39 ||
Then, at the sight of the enraged Lakshmana, the monkeys, their hearts numbed with fear, set up a chattering din, trying to appease him.
Shloka 40 (kishkindha.31.40)
te mahaughanibhaṃ dṛṣṭvā vajrāśanisamasvanam| siṃhanādaṃ samaṃ cakrurlakṣmaṇasya samīpataḥ|| 31.40 ||
Seeing him like a raging flood, like the crash of a thunderbolt, they all at once raised a lion's roar there beside Lakshmana.
Shloka 41 (kishkindha.31.41)
tena śabdena mahatā pratyabudhyata vānaraḥ| madavihvalatāmrākṣo vyākulaḥ sragvibhūṣaṇaḥ|| 31.41 ||
That great uproar finally woke Sugriva, but his coppery eyes were still dazed with intoxication, and his garlands and ornaments hung in disarray.
Shloka 42 (kishkindha.31.42)
athāṅgadavacaḥ śrutvā tenaiva ca samāgatau| mantriṇau vānarendrasya sammatodāradarśanau|| 31.42 ||
On hearing Angada's report, two of the monkey-king's ministers — respected and large-hearted in outlook — came along with him.
Shloka 43 (kishkindha.31.43)
plakṣaścaiva prabhāvaśca mantriṇāvarthadharmayoḥ| vaktumuccāvacaṃ prāptaṃ lakṣmaṇaṃ tau śaśaṃsatuḥ|| 31.43 ||
These two ministers, Plaksha and Prabhava, well-versed in matters of policy and righteousness, informed Sugriva that Lakshmana had come to speak with him on various urgent affairs.
Shloka 44 (kishkindha.31.44)
prasādayitvā sugrīvaṃ vacanaiḥ sārthaniścitaiḥ| āsīnaṃ paryupāsīnau yathā śakraṃ marutpatim|| 31.44 ||
Seated close beside Sugriva, as attendants sit beside Indra, lord of the winds, those two ministers began, with meaningful and carefully chosen words, to set his mind at ease.
Shloka 45 (kishkindha.31.45)
satyasaṃdhau mahābhāgau bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau| vayasyabhāvaṃ samprāptau rājyārhau rājyadāyinau|| 31.45 ||
"Those brothers Rama and Lakshmana, ever true to their word and greatly blessed, though themselves worthy of a kingdom, chose instead to bestow one upon you, and have become your true friends.
Shloka 46 (kishkindha.31.46)
tayoreko dhanuṣpāṇirdvāri tiṣṭhati lakṣmaṇaḥ| yasya bhītāḥ pravepanto nādān muñcanti vānarāḥ|| 31.46 ||
One of the two, Lakshmana, bow in hand, stands at the gate — the very one whose presence has set the monkeys trembling and crying out in fear.
Shloka 47 (kishkindha.31.47)
sa eṣa rāghavabhrātā lakṣmaṇo vākyasārathiḥ| vyavasāyarathaḥ prāptastasya rāmasya śāsanāt|| 31.47 ||
This Lakshmana, Raghava's brother, has come here at Rama's command, as though riding a chariot called Resolve, with the word of Rama himself as his charioteer.
Shloka 48 (kishkindha.31.48)
ayaṃ ca tanayo rājaṃstārāyā dayito'ṅgadaḥ| lakṣmaṇena sakāśaṃ te preṣitastvarayānagha|| 31.48 ||
And this Angada, O blameless king, Tara's beloved son, has been sent to you in haste by Lakshmana himself.
Shloka 49 (kishkindha.31.49)
so'yaṃ roṣaparītākṣo dvāri tiṣṭhati vīryavān| vānarān vānarapate cakṣuṣā nirdahanniva|| 31.49 ||
O king of monkeys, that mighty Lakshmana stands there at the gate, his eyes ringed with fury, as though he would burn the very monkeys to ash with his gaze alone.
Shloka 50 (kishkindha.31.50)
tasya mūrdhnā praṇāmaṃ tvaṃ saputraḥ sahabāndhavaḥ| gaccha śīghraṃ mahārāja roṣo hyadyopaśāmyatām|| 31.50 ||
