atha pratisamādiṣṭo lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā| praviveśa guhāṃ ramyāṃ kiṣkindhāṃ rāmaśāsanāt|| 33.1 ||

Then, invited within, Lakshmana, destroyer of enemy heroes, entered that delightful cave-city of Kishkindha at Rama's command.

Shloka 2 (kishkindha.33.2)

dvārasthā harayastatra mahākāyā mahābalāḥ| babhūvurlakṣmaṇaṃ dṛṣṭvā sarve prāñjalayaḥ sthitāḥ|| 33.2 ||

The huge and mighty monkeys standing at the gateway, on seeing Lakshmana, all drew back with joined palms.

Shloka 3 (kishkindha.33.3)

niḥśvasantaṃ tu taṃ dṛṣṭvā kruddhaṃ daśarathātmajam| babhūvurharayastrastā na cainaṃ paryavārayan|| 33.3 ||

Seeing Dasharatha's son breathing hard in fury, the monkeys grew frightened and did not even venture close to him.

Shloka 4 (kishkindha.33.4)

sa tāṃ ratnamayīṃ divyāṃ śrīmān puṣpitakānanām| ramyāṃ ratnasamākīrṇāṃ dadarśa mahatīṃ guhām|| 33.4 ||

The glorious Lakshmana beheld that vast cavern-city, resplendent, studded with jewels, its groves in bloom, delightful and richly strewn with gems.

Shloka 5 (kishkindha.33.5)

harmyaprāsādasambādhāṃ nānāratnopaśobhitām| sarvakāmaphalairvṛkṣaiḥ puṣpitairupaśobhitām|| 33.5 ||

It was crowded with mansions and towering palaces, adorned with every kind of jewel, and further beautified by blossoming trees bearing fruit to satisfy every desire.

Shloka 6 (kishkindha.33.6)

devagandharvaputraiśca vānaraiḥ kāmarūpibhiḥ| divyamālyāmbaradharaiḥ śobhitāṃ priyadarśanaiḥ|| 33.6 ||

The city was graced by monkeys, sons as it were of gods and gandharvas, able to change form at will, clad in celestial garlands and robes, lovely to behold.

Shloka 7 (kishkindha.33.7)

candanāgurupadmānāṃ gandhaiḥ surabhigandhitām| maireyāṇāṃ madhūnāṃ ca sammoditamahāpathām|| 33.7 ||

It was fragrant with the scents of sandalwood, agarwood, and lotus, and its great avenues were made merry with the bouquet of fruit-wines and mead.

Shloka 8 (kishkindha.33.8)

vindhyamerugiriprakhyaiḥ prāsādairnaikabhūmibhiḥ| dadarśa girinadyaśca vimalāstatra rāghavaḥ|| 33.8 ||

There the Raghava prince saw many-storeyed mansions rising like Mount Vindhya and Mount Meru, and clear mountain streams flowing through the city.

Shloka 9 (kishkindha.33.9)

aṅgadasya gṛhaṃ ramyaṃ maindasya dvividasya ca| gavayasya gavākṣasya gajasya śarabhasya ca|| 33.9 ||

He saw the exquisite mansion of Angada, and also those of Mainda, Dvivida, Gavaya, Gavaksha, Gaja, and Sharabha.

Shloka 10 (kishkindha.33.10)

vidyunmāleśca sampāteḥ sūryākṣasya hanūmataḥ| vīrabāhoḥ subāhośca nalasya ca mahātmanaḥ|| 33.10 ||

He saw too the mansions of Vidyunmali, Sampati, Suryaksha, and Hanuman, and those of Virabahu, Subahu, and the noble Nala.

Shloka 11 (kishkindha.33.11)

kumudasya suṣeṇasya tārajāmbavatostathā| dadhivaktrasya nīlasya supāṭalasunetrayoḥ|| 33.11 ||

Likewise the mansions of Kumuda, Sushena, Tara, and Jambavan, and of Dadhivaktra, Nila, Supatala, and Sunetra.

Shloka 12 (kishkindha.33.12)

eteṣāṃ kapimukhyānāṃ rājamārge mahātmanām| dadarśa gṛhamukhyāni mahāsārāṇi lakṣmaṇaḥ|| 33.12 ||

Thus, along the royal highway, Lakshmana beheld the magnificent, richly-appointed mansions of these great monkey chieftains.

Shloka 13 (kishkindha.33.13)

pāṇḍurābhraprakāśāni gandhamālyayutāni ca| prabhūtadhanadhānyāni strīratnaiḥ śobhitāni ca|| 33.13 ||

Those mansions gleamed like pale clouds, hung with fragrant garlands, brimming with wealth and grain, and graced by jewel-like women.

Shloka 14 (kishkindha.33.14)

pāṇḍureṇa tu śailena parikṣiptaṃ durāsadam| vānarendragṛhaṃ ramyaṃ mahendrasadanopamam|| 33.14 ||

The delightful palace of the monkey king, comparable to Indra's own abode, stood ringed by a pale mountain and was hard indeed to approach.

Shloka 15 (kishkindha.33.15)

śuklaiḥ prāsādaśikharaiḥ kailāsaśikharopamaiḥ| sarvakāmaphalairvṛkṣaiḥ puṣpitairupaśobhitam|| 33.15 ||

Its white spires resembled the peaks of Kailasa, and it was adorned with flowering trees that bore fruit to fulfill every wish.

Shloka 16 (kishkindha.33.16)

mahendradattaiḥ śrīmadbhirnīlajīmūtasaṃnibhaiḥ| divyapuṣpaphalairvṛkṣaiḥ śītacchāyairmanoramaiḥ|| 33.16 ||

There too stood trees, gifts of Indra, splendid and dark as rain-clouds, bearing celestial flowers and fruit, casting cool and delightful shade.

Shloka 17 (kishkindha.33.17)

haribhiḥ saṃvṛtadvāraṃ balibhiḥ śastrapāṇibhiḥ| divyamālyāvṛtaṃ śubhraṃ taptakāñcanatoraṇam|| 33.17 ||

Its gates were guarded by mighty, weapon-bearing monkeys; it was hung with celestial garlands, its resplendent archway wrought of refined gold.

Shloka 18 (kishkindha.33.18)

sugrīvasya gṛhaṃ ramyaṃ praviveśa mahābalaḥ| avāryamāṇaḥ saumitrirmahābhramiva bhāskaraḥ|| 33.18 ||

The mighty Saumitri entered Sugriva's beautiful palace without hindrance, as the sun enters a great cloud.

Shloka 19 (kishkindha.33.19)

sa sapta kakṣyā dharmātmā yānāsanasamāvṛtāḥ| dadarśa sumahada‍guptaṃ dadarśāntaḥpuraṃ mahat|| 33.19 ||

That righteous prince, passing through seven successive courtyards lined with palanquins and seats, came upon the vast and closely-guarded inner apartments.

Shloka 20 (kishkindha.33.20)

haimarājataparyaṅkairbahubhiśca varāsanaiḥ| mahārhāstaraṇopetaistatra tatra samāvṛtam|| 33.20 ||

It was filled, here and there, with countless couches of gold and silver and fine seats, all spread with priceless coverings.

Shloka 21 (kishkindha.33.21)

praviśanneva satataṃ śuśrāva madhurasvanam| tantrīgītasamākīrṇaṃ samatālapadākṣaram|| 33.21 ||

The moment he stepped in, he heard, unbroken, a sweet music mingling song with the strains of stringed instruments, its rhythm, words, and notes all in perfect measure.

Shloka 22 (kishkindha.33.22)

bahvīśca vividhākārā rūpayauvanagarvitāḥ| striyaḥ sugrīvabhavane dadarśa sa mahābalaḥ|| 33.22 ||

The mighty Lakshmana saw in Sugriva's palace many women of varied and striking form, each taking pride in her beauty and youth.

Shloka 23 (kishkindha.33.23)

dṛṣṭvābhijanasampannāstatra mālyakṛtasrajaḥ| varamālyakṛtavyagrā bhūṣaṇottamabhūṣitāḥ|| 33.23 ||

He saw women there of noble birth, weaving lovely garlands, absorbed in fashioning fine floral chains, adorned with the finest jewellery.

Shloka 24 (kishkindha.33.24)

nātṛptān nāti cāvyagrān nānudāttaparicchadān| sugrīvānucarāṃścāpi lakṣayāmāsa lakṣmaṇaḥ|| 33.24 ||

Lakshmana also took note that Sugriva's attendant women were, one and all, at ease, untroubled, and richly attired.

Shloka 25 (kishkindha.33.25)

kūjitaṃ nūpurāṇāṃ ca kāñcīnāṃ niḥsvanaṃ tathā| sa niśamya tataḥ śrīmān saumitrirlajjito'bhavat|| 33.25 ||

Then, hearing the tinkling of anklets and the chiming of golden girdles, the resplendent Saumitri grew abashed.

Shloka 26 (kishkindha.33.26)

roṣavegaprakupitaḥ śrutvā cābharaṇasvanam| cakāra jyāsvanaṃ vīro diśaḥ śabdena pūrayan|| 33.26 ||

On hearing the jingle of ornaments, the valiant Lakshmana, seized anew by sudden fury, twanged his bowstring, filling every quarter with its sound.

Shloka 27 (kishkindha.33.27)

cāritreṇa mahābāhurapakṛṣṭaḥ sa lakṣmaṇaḥ| tasthāvekāntamāśritya rāmakopasamanvitaḥ|| 33.27 ||

Restrained by his own decency, the mighty-armed Lakshmana drew back and stood apart in solitude, still carrying Rama's anguish within his heart.

Shloka 28 (kishkindha.33.28)

tena cāpasvanenātha sugrīvaḥ plavagādhipaḥ| vijñāyāgamanaṃ trastaḥ sa cacāla varāsanāt|| 33.28 ||

By that twang of the bowstring, Sugriva, king of monkeys, understood that Lakshmana had come, and startled, he sprang up at once from his splendid seat.

Shloka 29 (kishkindha.33.29)

aṅgadena yathā mahyaṃ purastāt prativeditam| suvyaktameṣa samprāptaḥ saumitrirbhrātṛvatsalaḥ|| 33.29 ||

"Just as Angada informed me earlier — it is now quite clear that Saumitri, so devoted to his brother, has indeed arrived.

Shloka 30 (kishkindha.33.30)

aṅgadena samākhyāto jyāsvanena ca vānaraḥ| bubudhe lakṣmaṇaṃ prāptaṃ mukhaṃ cāsya vyaśuṣyata|| 33.30 ||

Warned already by Angada, and now by the sound of the bowstring, the monkey king was certain that Lakshmana had come, and his face went dry with fear.

Shloka 31 (kishkindha.33.31)

tatastārāṃ hariśreṣṭhaḥ sugrīvaḥ priyadarśanām| uvāca hitamavyagrastrāsasambhrāntamānasaḥ|| 33.31 ||

Then Sugriva, chief of the monkeys, his heart bewildered with dismay yet outwardly composed, spoke this useful word to the lovely Tara.

Shloka 32 (kishkindha.33.32)

kiṃ nu ruṭkāraṇaṃ subhru prakṛtyā mṛdumānasaḥ| saroṣa iva samprāpto yenāyaṃ rāghavānujaḥ|| 33.32 ||

"O fair-browed Tara, what could truly be the cause of his displeasure? This brother of Raghava is by nature so gentle-hearted, yet he has come here as if in real anger.

Shloka 33 (kishkindha.33.33)

kiṃ paśyasi kumārasya roṣasthānamanindite| na khalvakāraṇe kopamāharennarapuṅgavaḥ|| 33.33 ||

O flawless one, what do you suppose could be the ground for this young man's anger? Surely so fine a man would never take offence without cause.

Shloka 34 (kishkindha.33.34)

yadyasya kṛtamasmābhirbudhyase kiṃcidapriyam| tada‍buda‍dhyā sampradhāryāśu kṣipramevābhidhīyatām|| 33.34 ||

If you sense that we have done anything, however small, to displease him, then determine it swiftly with your good judgment and tell me at once.

Shloka 35 (kishkindha.33.35)

athavā svayamevainaṃ draṣṭumarhasi bhāmini| vacanaiḥ sāntvayuktaiśca prasādayitumarhasi|| 33.35 ||

Or better still, O lovely lady, go and see him yourself, and win him over with gentle, conciliatory words.

Shloka 36 (kishkindha.33.36)

tvaddarśane viśuddhātmā na sma kopaṃ kariṣyati| nahi strīṣu mahātmānaḥ kvacit kurvanti dāruṇam|| 33.36 ||

The moment he sees you, that pure-hearted Lakshmana will surely let his anger subside, for noble souls never behave harshly toward women.

Shloka 37 (kishkindha.33.37)

tvayā sāntvairupakrāntaṃ prasannendriyamānasam| tataḥ kamalapatrākṣaṃ drakṣyāmyahamariṃdamam|| 33.37 ||

"Once your soothing words have set his heart and senses at peace, only then will I be able to face that lotus-eyed destroyer of foes." So Sugriva said to Tara.

Shloka 38 (kishkindha.33.38)

sā praskhalantī madavihvalākṣī pralambakāñcīguṇahemasūtrā| salakṣaṇā lakṣmaṇasaṃnidhānaṃ jagāma tārā namitāṅgayaṣṭiḥ|| 33.38 ||

Graceful Tara, her steps unsteady and eyes swimming with the wine's effect, her golden girdle-strings swaying, her slender form gently bowed, made her way to where Lakshmana stood.

Shloka 39 (kishkindha.33.39)

sa tāṃ samīkṣyaiva harīśapatnīṃ tasthāvudāsīnatayā mahātmā| avāṅmukho'bhūnmanujendraputraḥ strīsaṃnikarṣād vinivṛttakopaḥ|| 33.39 ||

The moment the noble prince saw the monkey-king's wife, he stood back with studied indifference; out of respect for her presence, his anger subsided, and he lowered his face.

Shloka 40 (kishkindha.33.40)

sā pānayogācca nivṛttalajjā dṛṣṭiprasādācca narendrasūnoḥ| uvāca tārā praṇayapragalbhaṃ vākyaṃ mahārthaṃ parisāntvarūpam|| 33.40 ||

Emboldened both by the wine and by the gentle look in the prince's eyes, Tara, her shyness gone, spoke a weighty and wholly conciliatory speech, bold in its affection.

Shloka 41 (kishkindha.33.41)

kiṃ kopamūlaṃ manujendraputra kaste na saṃtiṣṭhati vāṅ‍‍nideśe| kaḥ śuṣkavṛkṣaṃ vanamāpatantaṃ dāvāgnimāsīdati nirviśaṅkaḥ|| 33.41 ||

"O prince, what is the root of your anger? Who fails to obey your word? And who, without a shadow of fear, would go near a wildfire falling upon a forest of dry timber?

Shloka 42 (kishkindha.33.42)

sa tasyā vacanaṃ śrutvā sāntvapūrvamaśaṅkitaḥ| bhūyaḥ praṇayadṛṣṭārthaṃ lakṣmaṇo vākyamabravīt|| 33.42 ||

Hearing her words, gentle in tone and evidently born of goodwill, Lakshmana, his suspicion allayed, spoke once more.

Shloka 43 (kishkindha.33.43)

kimayaṃ kāmavṛttaste luptadharmārthasaṃgrahaḥ| bhartā bhartṛhite yukte na cainamavabudhyase|| 33.43 ||

"O you who are so devoted to your husband's welfare — is it that your husband is so given over to pleasure that he neglects rectitude and duty altogether, and you have not even noticed his lapse?

Shloka 44 (kishkindha.33.44)

na cintayati rājyārthaṃ so'smān śokaparāyaṇān| sāmātyapariṣat tāre kāmamevopasevate|| 33.44 ||

He gives no thought, Tara, either to the interests of his kingdom or to us sunk in grief; he and his council of ministers are absorbed in nothing but pleasure.

Shloka 45 (kishkindha.33.45)

sa māsāṃścaturaḥ kṛtvā pramāṇaṃ plavageśvaraḥ| vyatītāṃstān madodagro viharan nāvabudhyate|| 33.45 ||

That lord of monkeys fixed a term of four months, yet lost in his revels and his intoxication, he has not even noticed that the time has long since run out.

Shloka 46 (kishkindha.33.46)

nahi dharmārthasiddhyarthaṃ pānamevaṃ praśasyate| pānādarthaśca kāmaśca dharmaśca parihīyate|| 33.46 ||

Such drinking is never commended as a means to attain rectitude and prosperity; indeed, wealth, desire, and duty — all three — are ruined by drink.

Shloka 47 (kishkindha.33.47)

dharmalopo mahāṃstāvat kṛte hyapratikurvataḥ| arthalopaśca mitrasya nāśe guṇavato mahān|| 33.47 ||

For one who fails to repay a favour done to him, a grave loss to his own righteousness follows; and in losing so worthy a friend, a great loss to his own interests follows too.

Shloka 48 (kishkindha.33.48)

mitraṃ hyarthaguṇaśreṣṭhaṃ satyadharmaparāyaṇam| tada‍dvayaṃ tu parityaktaṃ na tu dharme vyavasthitam|| 33.48 ||

A friend devoted to truth and righteousness is worth more than wealth or any other advantage — yet your husband has cast aside just such a friend, and he does not even stand by what is right.

Shloka 49 (kishkindha.33.49)

tadevaṃ prastute kārye kāryamasmābhiruttaram| tat kāryaṃ kāryatattvajñe tvamudāhartumarhasi|| 33.49 ||

"So, with our present task left thus unfinished, what remains for us to do next? You, who understand the heart of the matter, are the one fit to say." Thus Lakshmana spoke to Tara.

Shloka 50 (kishkindha.33.50)

sā tasya dharmārthasamādhiyuktaṃ niśamya vākyaṃ madhurasvabhāvam| tārā gatārthe manujendrakārye viśvāsayuktaṃ tamuvāca bhūyaḥ|| 33.50 ||

Having heard those words — mellow in tone, yet weighted with both duty and purpose — Tara, aware that the prince's task had indeed been delayed, nonetheless spoke again to him with quiet confidence.

Shloka 51 (kishkindha.33.51)

na kopakālaḥ kṣitipālaputra na cāpi kopaḥ svajane vidheyaḥ| tvadarthakāmasya janasya tasya pramādamapyarhasi vīra soḍhum|| 33.51 ||

"O prince, this is no time for anger, nor should anger ever be turned upon one's own people. O hero, it becomes you to bear even this lapse of one whose only wish is to serve your cause.

Shloka 52 (kishkindha.33.52)

kopaṃ kathaṃ nāma guṇaprakṛṣṭaḥ kumāra kuryādapakṛṣṭasattve| kastvadvidhaḥ kopavaśaṃ hi gacchet sattvāvaruddhastapasaḥ prasūtiḥ|| 33.52 ||

How, O prince, could one of such superior virtue turn his anger upon a lesser being? And how could one such as you, whose very nature is disciplined and born of austerity, ever fall under anger's sway?

Shloka 53 (kishkindha.33.53)

jānāmi kopaṃ harivīrabandho- rjānāmi kāryasya ca kālasaṅgam| jānāmi kāryaṃ tvayi yatkṛtaṃ na- staccāpi jānāmi yadatra kāryam|| 33.53 ||

I know why Rama, friend of the monkey champion, is angered; I know too how the appointed time for the task has slipped away; I know what wrong has been done to you on our part; and I also know what remains to be done in this matter now.

Shloka 54 (kishkindha.33.54)

taccāpi jānāmi tathāviṣahyaṃ balaṃ naraśreṣṭha śarīrajasya| jānāmi yasmiṃśca jane'vabaddhaṃ kāmena sugrīvamasaktamadya|| 33.54 ||

I know too, O best of men, just how unbearable the pull of bodily desire can be, and I well know among which women Sugriva has, even now, become so helplessly bound by passion.

Shloka 55 (kishkindha.33.55)

na kāmatantre tava buddhirasti tvaṃ vai yathā manyuvaśaṃ prapannaḥ| na deśakālau hi yathārthadharmā- vavekṣate kāmaratirmanuṣyaḥ|| 33.55 ||

Since you are now in the grip of anger, these matters of passion are hard for you to see clearly; but the truth is, a man given over to desire heeds neither place nor time, nor rightful duty and gain.

Shloka 56 (kishkindha.33.56)

taṃ kāmavṛttaṃ mama saṃnikṛṣṭaṃ kāmābhiyogācca vimuktalajjam| kṣamasva tāvat paravīrahanta- stvad‍bhrātaraṃ vānaravaṃśanātham|| 33.56 ||

O destroyer of enemy heroes, forgive, then, your brother-like Sugriva, lord of the monkey race, who lost in passion and, overcome by its violence, has shed all shame, and stays here now by my side.

Shloka 57 (kishkindha.33.57)

maharṣayo dharmatapo'bhirāmāḥ kāmānukāmāḥ pratibaddhamohāḥ| ayaṃ prakṛtyā capalaḥ kapistu kathaṃ na sajjeta sukheṣu rājā|| 33.57 ||

If even great sages, who delight only in righteousness and austerity, can at times be caught in the snares of desire, how then could this restless monkey-king, by his very nature, fail to be caught up in pleasure?

Shloka 58 (kishkindha.33.58)

ityevamuktvā vacanaṃ mahārthaṃ sā vānarī lakṣmaṇamaprameyam| punaḥ sakhedaṃ madavihvalākṣī bharturhitaṃ vākyamidaṃ babhāṣe|| 33.58 ||

Having spoken this weighty word, that monkey-woman, her eyes still swimming with wine, addressed the incomparable Lakshmana once more, somewhat ruefully, for the sake of her husband's welfare.

Shloka 59 (kishkindha.33.59)

udyogastu cirājñaptaḥ sugrīveṇa narottama| kāmasyāpi vidheyena tavārthapratisādhane|| 33.59 ||

"O best of men, even though Sugriva is in thrall to pleasure, he had, long ago, already set the campaign in motion to achieve your purpose.

Shloka 60 (kishkindha.33.60)

āgatā hi mahāvīryā harayaḥ kāmarūpiṇaḥ| koṭīḥ śatasahasrāṇi nānānaganivāsinaḥ|| 33.60 ||

See — mighty and valorous monkeys, dwellers of many different mountains, able to change their shape at will, have already gathered here in their hundreds of thousands, in their millions.

Shloka 61 (kishkindha.33.61)

tadāgaccha mahābāho cāritraṃ rakṣitaṃ tvayā| acchalaṃ mitrabhāvena satāṃ dārāvalokanam|| 33.61 ||

"So come now, O mighty-armed one — you have upheld your propriety enough. For good men, to look upon a friend's wives in a spirit of pure friendship is no impropriety at all." Thus Tara invited Lakshmana within.

Shloka 62 (kishkindha.33.62)

tārayā cābhyanujñātastvarayā vāpi coditaḥ| praviveśa mahābāhurabhyantaramariṃdamaḥ|| 33.62 ||

Given leave by Tara, and pressed on besides by the urgency of his mission, the mighty-armed destroyer of foes entered the inner chamber.

Shloka 63 (kishkindha.33.63)

tataḥ sugrīvamāsīnaṃ kāñcane paramāsane| mahārhāstaraṇopete dadarśādityasaṃnibham|| 33.63 ||

There he saw Sugriva, seated upon a golden throne spread with priceless coverings, radiant as the sun.

Shloka 64 (kishkindha.33.64)

divyābharaṇacitrāṅgaṃ divyarūpaṃ yaśasvinam| divyamālyāmbaradharaṃ mahendramiva durjayam|| 33.64 ||

His body was resplendent with celestial ornaments, his form divine, his fame widespread; clad in heavenly garlands and robes, he seemed as unconquerable as Indra himself.

Shloka 65 (kishkindha.33.65)

divyābharaṇamālyābhiḥ pramadābhiḥ samāvṛtam| saṃrabdhatararaktākṣo babhūvāntakasaṃnibhaḥ|| 33.65 ||

He sat there surrounded by women decked in celestial ornaments and garlands. At the sight of him so, Lakshmana's eyes turned crimson with fresh fury, and he seemed the very image of Death.

Shloka 66 (kishkindha.33.66)

rumāṃ tu vīraḥ parirabhya gāḍhaṃ varāsanastho varahemavarṇaḥ| dadarśa saumitrimadīnasattvaṃ viśālanetraḥ sa viśālanetram|| 33.66 ||

That valiant, golden-hued Sugriva, seated on his splendid throne with Ruma held close in his embrace, turned his wide eyes upon the wide-eyed, unflinching Saumitri.
