Lakshmana Upbraids Sugriva

Shloka 1 (kishkindha.34.1)

तमप्रतिहतं क्रुद्धं प्रविष्टं पुरुषर्षभम्। सुग्रीवो लक्ष्मणं दृष्ट्वा बभूव व्यथितेन्द्रियः॥ 34.1 ॥

tamapratihataṃ kruddhaṃ praviṣṭaṃ puruṣarṣabham| sugrīvo lakṣmaṇaṃ dṛṣṭvā babhūva vyathitendriyaḥ|| 34.1 ||

Seeing Lakshmana, that illustrious man, enter unimpeded and enraged, Sugriva's senses were thrown into agitation.

Shloka 2 (kishkindha.34.2)

क्रुद्धं निःश्वसमानं तं प्रदीप्तमिव तेजसा। भ्रातुर्व्यसनसंतप्तं दृष्ट्वा दशरथात्मजम्॥ 34.2 ॥

kruddhaṃ niḥśvasamānaṃ taṃ pradīptamiva tejasā| bhrāturvyasanasaṃtaptaṃ dṛṣṭvā daśarathātmajam|| 34.2 ||

Seeing Dasharatha's son, breathing heavily in his fury, blazing as if with fire, scorched by his brother's suffering,

Shloka 3 (kishkindha.34.3)

उत्पपात हरिश्रेष्ठो हित्वा सौवर्णमासनम्। महान् महेन्द्रस्य यथा स्वलंकृत इव ध्वजः॥ 34.3 ॥

utpapāta hariśreṣṭho hitvā sauvarṇamāsanam| mahān mahendrasya yathā svalaṃkṛta iva dhvajaḥ|| 34.3 ||

Sugriva, foremost of monkeys, sprang up from his golden seat, tottering like the great, richly-adorned banner-pole of Indra about to be brought down.

Shloka 4 (kishkindha.34.4)

उत्पतन्तमनूत्पेतू रुमाप्रभृतयः स्त्रियः। सुग्रीवं गगने पूर्णं चन्द्रं तारागणा इव॥ 34.4 ॥

utpatantamanūtpetū rumāprabhṛtayaḥ striyaḥ| sugrīvaṃ gagane pūrṇaṃ candraṃ tārāgaṇā iva|| 34.4 ||

As Sugriva sprang up, Ruma and the other women rose with him, just as clusters of stars rise together with the full moon in the sky.

Shloka 5 (kishkindha.34.5)

संरक्तनयनः श्रीमान् संचचार कृताञ्जलिः। बभूवावस्थितस्तत्र कल्पवृक्षो महानिव॥ 34.5 ॥

saṃraktanayanaḥ śrīmān saṃcacāra kṛtāñjaliḥ| babhūvāvasthitastatra kalpavṛkṣo mahāniva|| 34.5 ||

That fortunate but red-eyed Sugriva went forward with joined palms, and stood there like some great wish-granting tree.

Shloka 6 (kishkindha.34.6)

रुमाद्वितीयं सुग्रीवं नारीमध्यगतं स्थितम्। अब्रवील्लक्ष्मणः क्रुद्धः सतारं शशिनं यथा॥ 34.6 ॥

rumādvitīyaṃ sugrīvaṃ nārīmadhyagataṃ sthitam| abravīllakṣmaṇaḥ kruddhaḥ satāraṃ śaśinaṃ yathā|| 34.6 ||

To Sugriva, standing there with Ruma at his side amid a throng of women, like the moon amid its ring of stars, the enraged Lakshmana spoke thus.

Shloka 7 (kishkindha.34.7)

सत्त्वाभिजनसम्पन्नः सानुक्रोशो जितेन्द्रियः। कृतज्ञः सत्यवादी च राजा लोके महीयते॥ 34.7 ॥

sattvābhijanasampannaḥ sānukrośo jitendriyaḥ| kṛtajñaḥ satyavādī ca rājā loke mahīyate|| 34.7 ||

"A king endowed with strength and noble lineage, compassionate, master of his senses, grateful, and truthful — such a one alone is honoured in this world.

Shloka 8 (kishkindha.34.8)

यस्तु राजा स्थितोऽधर्मे मित्राणामुपकारिणाम्। मिथ्या प्रतिज्ञां कुरुते को नृशंसतरस्ततः॥ 34.8 ॥

yastu rājā sthito'dharme mitrāṇāmupakāriṇām| mithyā pratijñāṃ kurute ko nṛśaṃsatarastataḥ|| 34.8 ||

But what king could be more merciless than one who, standing in unrighteousness, breaks a false promise made to a friend who has helped him?

Shloka 9 (kishkindha.34.9)

शतमश्वानृते हन्ति सहस्रं तु गवानृते। आत्मानं स्वजनं हन्ति पुरुषः पुरुषानृते॥ 34.9 ॥

śatamaśvānṛte hanti sahasraṃ tu gavānṛte| ātmānaṃ svajanaṃ hanti puruṣaḥ puruṣānṛte|| 34.9 ||

A man who lies about a horse incurs the guilt of killing a hundred; about a cow, of killing a thousand; and one who breaks his word to a fellow man brings destruction upon himself and his own kin.

Shloka 10 (kishkindha.34.10)

पूर्वं कृतार्थो मित्राणां न तत्प्रतिकरोति यः। कृतघ्नः सर्वभूतानां स वध्यः प्लवगेश्वर॥ 34.10 ॥

pūrvaṃ kṛtārtho mitrāṇāṃ na tatpratikaroti yaḥ| kṛtaghnaḥ sarvabhūtānāṃ sa vadhyaḥ plavageśvara|| 34.10 ||

O king of monkeys, one who has already had his purpose fulfilled through a friend's help, yet does not requite it, is an ingrate deserving of death at the hands of all beings.

Shloka 11 (kishkindha.34.11)

गीतोऽयं ब्रह्मणा श्लोकः सर्वलोकनमस्कृतः। दृष्ट्वा कृतघ्नं क्रुद्धेन तन्निबोध प्लवंगम॥ 34.11 ॥

gīto'yaṃ brahmaṇā ślokaḥ sarvalokanamaskṛtaḥ| dṛṣṭvā kṛtaghnaṃ kruddhena tannibodha plavaṃgama|| 34.11 ||

O monkey, at the sight of just such an ingrate, Brahma himself, in anger, once uttered a verse revered throughout all the worlds — hear it now.

Shloka 12 (kishkindha.34.12)

गोघ्ने चैव सुरापे च चौरे भग्नव्रते तथा। निष्कृतिर्विहिता सद्भिः कृतघ्ने नास्ति निष्कृतिः॥ 34.12 ॥

goghne caiva surāpe ca caure bhagnavrate tathā| niṣkṛtirvihitā sadbhiḥ kṛtaghne nāsti niṣkṛtiḥ|| 34.12 ||

'For the slayer of a cow, for the drunkard, for the thief, and for the breaker of a vow, the wise have ordained atonement — but for the ingrate, there is no atonement at all.'

Shloka 13 (kishkindha.34.13)

अनार्यस्त्वं कृतघ्नश्च मिथ्यावादी च वानर। पूर्वं कृतार्थो रामस्य न तत्प्रतिकरोषि यत्॥ 34.13 ॥

anāryastvaṃ kṛtaghnaśca mithyāvādī ca vānara| pūrvaṃ kṛtārtho rāmasya na tatpratikaroṣi yat|| 34.13 ||

O monkey, you are base, ungrateful, and false to your word — for you had your own purpose fulfilled by Rama long ago, and now you fail to return the favour.

Shloka 14 (kishkindha.34.14)

ननु नाम कृतार्थेन त्वया रामस्य वानर। सीताया मार्गणे यत्नः कर्तव्यः कृतमिच्छता॥ 34.14 ॥

nanu nāma kṛtārthena tvayā rāmasya vānara| sītāyā mārgaṇe yatnaḥ kartavyaḥ kṛtamicchatā|| 34.14 ||

O monkey, having had your own purpose achieved through Rama, is it not your plain duty now, if you wish his purpose fulfilled in turn, to make the effort of searching for Sita?

Shloka 15 (kishkindha.34.15)

स त्वं ग्राम्येषु भोगेषु सक्तो मिथ्याप्रतिश्रवः। न त्वां रामो विजानीते सर्पं मण्डूकराविणम्॥ 34.15 ॥

sa tvaṃ grāmyeṣu bhogeṣu sakto mithyāpratiśravaḥ| na tvāṃ rāmo vijānīte sarpaṃ maṇḍūkarāviṇam|| 34.15 ||

Rama has not yet recognized you for what you are — you, so given over to base pleasure, so false to your promise — a serpent that croaks like a frog.

Shloka 16 (kishkindha.34.16)

महाभागेन रामेण पापः करुणवेदिना। हरीणां प्रापितो राज्यं त्वं दुरात्मा महात्मना॥ 34.16 ॥

mahābhāgena rāmeṇa pāpaḥ karuṇavedinā| harīṇāṃ prāpito rājyaṃ tvaṃ durātmā mahātmanā|| 34.16 ||

It was through the compassion of that great, noble-souled Rama alone that you, sinner and evil-souled as you are, came to gain the kingdom of the monkeys.

Shloka 17 (kishkindha.34.17)

कृतं चेन्नातिजानीषे राघवस्य महात्मनः। सद्यस्त्वं निशितैर्बाणैर्हतो द्रक्ष्यसि वालिनम्॥ 34.17 ॥

kṛtaṃ cennātijānīṣe rāghavasya mahātmanaḥ| sadyastvaṃ niśitairbāṇairhato drakṣyasi vālinam|| 34.17 ||

If you fail to recognize what the noble Raghava has done for you, you will soon be struck down by his sharp arrows and go to join Vali.

Shloka 18 (kishkindha.34.18)

न स संकुचितः पन्था येन वाली हतो गतः। समये तिष्ठ सुग्रीव मा वालिपथमन्वगाः॥ 34.18 ॥

na sa saṃkucitaḥ panthā yena vālī hato gataḥ| samaye tiṣṭha sugrīva mā vālipathamanvagāḥ|| 34.18 ||

The path by which slain Vali departed, Sugriva, is no narrower now than it was then; so hold to your pledge, and do not follow Vali down that same road.

Shloka 19 (kishkindha.34.19)

न नूनमिक्ष्वाकुवरस्य कार्मुका- च्छरांश्च तान् पश्यसि वज्रसंनिभान्। ततः सुखं नाम विषेवसे सुखी न रामकार्यं मनसाप्यवेक्षसे॥ 34.19 ॥

na nūnamikṣvākuvarasya kārmukā- ccharāṃśca tān paśyasi vajrasaṃnibhān| tataḥ sukhaṃ nāma viṣevase sukhī na rāmakāryaṃ manasāpyavekṣase|| 34.19 ||

"Surely you have never seen the thunderbolt-like arrows that fly from the bow of Rama, best of the Ikshvaku line — that is why, blissfully sunk in pleasure, you give no thought, even in your heart, to Rama's cause." Thus spoke Lakshmana.
