The Search of the Eastern Quarter
Shloka 1 (kishkindha.40.1)
अथ राजा समृद्धार्थः सुग्रीवः प्लवगेश्वरः । उवाच नरशार्दूलं रामं परबलार्दनम् ॥ 40.1 ॥
atha rājā samṛddhārthaḥ sugrīvaḥ plavageśvaraḥ | uvāca naraśārdūlaṃ rāmaṃ parabalārdanam || 40.1 ||
Then King Sugreeva, lord of the vanaras, his purpose well accomplished, spoke to Rama, tiger among men, destroyer of hostile hosts.
Shloka 2 (kishkindha.40.2)
आगता विनिविष्टाश्च बलिनः कामरूपिणः । वानरेन्द्रा महेन्द्राभा ये मद्विषयवासिनः ॥ 40.2 ॥
āgatā viniviṣṭāśca balinaḥ kāmarūpiṇaḥ | vānarendrā mahendrābhā ye madviṣayavāsinaḥ || 40.2 ||
"Mighty ones able to take any form at will have come and taken their places, O Rama — monkey lords splendid as Mahendra, who dwell in my own domain.
Shloka 3 (kishkindha.40.3)
त इमे बहुविक्रान्तैर्बलिभिर्भीमविक्रमैः । आगता वानरा घोरा दैत्यदानवसंनिभाः ॥ 40.3 ॥
ta ime bahuvikrāntairbalibhirbhīmavikramaiḥ | āgatā vānarā ghorā daityadānavasaṃnibhāḥ || 40.3 ||
These fierce vanaras have come, of great valour, mighty, of terrible prowess, resembling daityas and danavas;
Shloka 4 (kishkindha.40.4)
ख्यातकर्मापदानाश्च बलवन्तो जितक्लमाः । पराक्रमेषु विख्याता व्यवसायेषु चोत्तमाः ॥ 40.4 ॥
khyātakarmāpadānāśca balavanto jitaklamāḥ | parākrameṣu vikhyātā vyavasāyeṣu cottamāḥ || 40.4 ||
renowned for their deeds and feats, mighty, unwearying, famed for valour, and supreme in enterprise.
Shloka 5 (kishkindha.40.5)
पृथिव्यम्बुचरा राम नानानगनिवासिनः । कोट्योघाश्च इमे प्राप्ता वानरास्तव किंकराः ॥ 40.5 ॥
pṛthivyambucarā rāma nānānaganivāsinaḥ | koṭyoghāśca ime prāptā vānarāstava kiṃkarāḥ || 40.5 ||
Those who roam both land and water, O Rama, dwelling on many mountains — these crores upon crores of vanaras who have come are your servants,
Shloka 6 (kishkindha.40.6)
निदेशवर्तिनः सर्वे सर्वे गुरुहिते स्थिताः । अभिप्रेतमनुष्ठातुं तव शक्ष्यन्त्यरिंदम ॥ 40.6 ॥
nideśavartinaḥ sarve sarve guruhite sthitāḥ | abhipretamanuṣṭhātuṃ tava śakṣyantyariṃdama || 40.6 ||
all obedient to command, all devoted to their elders' welfare; they will be able, O tormentor of foes, to accomplish whatever you desire.
Shloka 7 (kishkindha.40.7)
त इमे बहुसाहस्रैरनीकैर्भीमविक्रमैः । आगता वानरा घोरा दैत्यदानवसंनिभाः ॥ 40.7 ॥
ta ime bahusāhasrairanīkairbhīmavikramaiḥ | āgatā vānarā ghorā daityadānavasaṃnibhāḥ || 40.7 ||
These fierce vanaras have come in many thousands, of manifold valour, resembling daityas and danavas.
Shloka 8 (kishkindha.40.8)
यन्मन्यसे नरव्याघ्र प्राप्तकालं तदुच्यताम् । त्वत्सैन्यं त्वद्वशे युक्तमाज्ञापयितुमर्हसि ॥ 40.8 ॥
yanmanyase naravyāghra prāptakālaṃ taducyatām | tvatsainyaṃ tvadvaśe yuktamājñāpayitumarhasi || 40.8 ||
O tiger among men, say what you judge fitting now that the time has come; this army stands ready under your authority, and it is for you to command it."
Shloka 9 (kishkindha.40.9)
काममेषामिदं कार्यं विदितं मम तत्त्वतः । तथापि तु यथायुक्तमाज्ञापयितुमर्हसि ॥ 40.9 ॥
kāmameṣāmidaṃ kāryaṃ viditaṃ mama tattvataḥ | tathāpi tu yathāyuktamājñāpayitumarhasi || 40.9 ||
"This task of theirs is indeed known to me already; nevertheless, please give whatever order is fitting."
Shloka 10 (kishkindha.40.10)
तथा ब्रुवाणं सुग्रीवं रामो दशरथात्मजः । बाहुभ्यां सम्परिष्वज्य इदं वचनमब्रवीत् ॥ 40.10 ॥
tathā bruvāṇaṃ sugrīvaṃ rāmo daśarathātmajaḥ | bāhubhyāṃ sampariṣvajya idaṃ vacanamabravīt || 40.10 ||
To Sugreeva speaking thus, Rama, son of Dasharatha, embraced him with both arms and spoke these words:
Shloka 11 (kishkindha.40.11)
ज्ञायतां सौम्य वैदेही यदि जीवति वा न वा । स च देशो महाप्राज्ञ यस्मिन् वसति रावणः ॥ 40.11 ॥
jñāyatāṃ saumya vaidehī yadi jīvati vā na vā | sa ca deśo mahāprājña yasmin vasati rāvaṇaḥ || 40.11 ||
"Let it be found out, gentle one, whether Vaidehi lives or not, and also, O most wise, the region where Ravana dwells.
Shloka 12 (kishkindha.40.12)
अधिगम्य तु वैदेहीं निलयं रावणस्य च । प्राप्तकालं विधास्यामि तस्मिन् काले सह त्वया ॥ 40.12 ॥
adhigamya tu vaidehīṃ nilayaṃ rāvaṇasya ca | prāptakālaṃ vidhāsyāmi tasmin kāle saha tvayā || 40.12 ||
Having learned of Vaidehi and Ravana's abode, I shall, together with you, decide what is fitting at that time.
Shloka 13 (kishkindha.40.13)
नाहमस्मिन् प्रभुः कार्ये वानरेन्द्र न लक्ष्मणः । त्वमस्य हेतुः कार्यस्य प्रभुश्च प्लवगेश्वर ॥ 40.13 ॥
nāhamasmin prabhuḥ kārye vānarendra na lakṣmaṇaḥ | tvamasya hetuḥ kāryasya prabhuśca plavageśvara || 40.13 ||
In this matter, O lord of vanaras, neither I nor Lakshmana holds authority; you alone are both the cause and the master of this undertaking, lord of monkeys.
Shloka 14 (kishkindha.40.14)
त्वमेवाज्ञापय विभो मम कार्यविनिश्चयम् । त्वं हि जानासि मे कार्यं मम वीर न संशयः ॥ 40.14 ॥
tvamevājñāpaya vibho mama kāryaviniścayam | tvaṃ hi jānāsi me kāryaṃ mama vīra na saṃśayaḥ || 40.14 ||
You alone, mighty one, should determine the plan for my task; for you, hero, know well what my task requires — of this there is no doubt.
Shloka 15 (kishkindha.40.15)
सुहृद्द्वितीयो विक्रान्तः प्राज्ञः कालविशेषवित् । भवानस्मद्धिते युक्तः सुहृदाप्तोऽर्थवित्तमः ॥ 40.15 ॥
suhṛdadvitīyo vikrāntaḥ prājñaḥ kālaviśeṣavit | bhavānasmaddhite yuktaḥ suhṛdāpto'rthavittamaḥ || 40.15 ||
You are my friend and second self, valiant, wise, and knowing the right occasion; devoted to our welfare, a trusted friend, and the best knower of what is fitting."
Shloka 16 (kishkindha.40.16)
एवमुक्तस्तु सुग्रीवो विनतं नाम यूथपम् । अब्रवीद् रामसांनिध्ये लक्ष्मणस्य च धीमतः ॥ 40.16 ॥
evamuktastu sugrīvo vinataṃ nāma yūthapam | abravīd rāmasāṃnidhye lakṣmaṇasya ca dhīmataḥ || 40.16 ||
Thus addressed, Sugreeva, in the presence of Rama and the wise Lakshmana, spoke to a troop-leader named Vinata —
Shloka 17 (kishkindha.40.17)
शैलाभं मेघनिर्घोषमूर्जितं प्लवगेश्वरम् । सोमसूर्यनिभैः सार्धं वानरैर्वानरोत्तम ॥ 40.17 ॥
śailābhaṃ meghanirghoṣamūrjitaṃ plavageśvaram | somasūryanibhaiḥ sārdhaṃ vānarairvānarottama || 40.17 ||
"Take this lord of monkeys, best of vanaras, huge as a mountain, thundering like a cloud, mighty, together with vanaras radiant as the moon and sun,
Shloka 18 (kishkindha.40.18)
देशकालनयैर्युक्तो विज्ञः कार्यविनिश्चये । वृतः शतसहस्रेण वानराणां तरस्विनाम् ॥ 40.18 ॥
deśakālanayairyukto vijñaḥ kāryaviniścaye | vṛtaḥ śatasahasreṇa vānarāṇāṃ tarasvinām || 40.18 ||
skilled in judging place and time, wise in deciding upon undertakings, surrounded by a hundred thousand swift vanaras —
Shloka 19 (kishkindha.40.19)
अधिगच्छ दिशं पूर्वां सशैलवनकाननाम् । तत्र सीतां च वैदेहीं निलयं रावणस्य च ॥ 40.19 ॥
adhigaccha diśaṃ pūrvāṃ saśailavanakānanām | tatra sītāṃ ca vaidehīṃ nilayaṃ rāvaṇasya ca || 40.19 ||
and go to the eastern quarter, rich in mountains, forests and thickets; seek there Sita, Vaidehi, and the abode of Ravana.
Shloka 20 (kishkindha.40.20)
मार्गध्वं गिरिदुर्गेषु वनेषु च नदीषु च । नदीं भागीरथीं रम्यां सरयूं कौशिकीं तथा ॥ 40.20 ॥
mārgadhvaṃ giridurgeṣu vaneṣu ca nadīṣu ca | nadīṃ bhāgīrathīṃ ramyāṃ sarayūṃ kauśikīṃ tathā || 40.20 ||
Search in the mountain-fastnesses, in the forests and by the rivers — the lovely Bhagirathi, the Sarayu, and the Kaushiki,
Shloka 21 (kishkindha.40.21)
कालिन्दीं यमुनां रम्यां यामुनं च महागिरिम् । सरस्वतीं च सिन्धुं च शोणं मणिनिभोदकम् ॥ 40.21 ॥
kālindīṃ yamunāṃ ramyāṃ yāmunaṃ ca mahāgirim | sarasvatīṃ ca sindhuṃ ca śoṇaṃ maṇinibhodakam || 40.21 ||
the lovely Kalindi and the great mountain from which the Yamuna springs, the Sarasvati and the Sindhu, and the Shona whose waters gleam like jewels,
Shloka 22 (kishkindha.40.22)
महीं कालमहीं चापि शैलकाननशोभिताम् । ब्रह्ममालान् विदेहांश्च मालवान् काशिकोसलान् ॥ 40.22 ॥
mahīṃ kālamahīṃ cāpi śailakānanaśobhitām | brahmamālān videhāṃśca mālavān kāśikosalān || 40.22 ||
the Mahi and Kalamahi, adorned with mountain woods; and in the lands of Brahmamala, Videha, Malava, Kashi and Kosala,
Shloka 23 (kishkindha.40.23)
मागधांश्च महाग्रामान् पुण्ड्रांस्त्वङ्गांस्तथैव च । भूमिं च कोशकाराणां भूमिं च रजताकराम् ॥ 40.23 ॥
māgadhāṃśca mahāgrāmān puṇḍrāṃstvaṅgāṃstathaiva ca | bhūmiṃ ca kośakārāṇāṃ bhūmiṃ ca rajatākarām || 40.23 ||
in Magadha and its great villages, in Pundra and Anga as well, in the land of the silk-weavers, and the land of the silver mines —
Shloka 24 (kishkindha.40.24)
सर्वं च तद् विचेतव्यं मार्गयद्भिस्ततस्ततः । रामस्य दयितां भार्यां सीतां दशरथस्नुषाम् ॥ 40.24 ॥
sarvaṃ ca tad vicetavyaṃ mārgayadbhistatastataḥ | rāmasya dayitāṃ bhāryāṃ sītāṃ daśarathasnuṣām || 40.24 ||
all this must be searched, place after place, seeking Sita, Rama's beloved wife, King Dasharatha's daughter-in-law.
Shloka 25 (kishkindha.40.25)
समुद्रमवगाढांश्च पर्वतान् पत्तनानि च । मन्दरस्य च ये कोटिं संश्रिताः केचिदालयाः ॥ 40.25 ॥
samudramavagāḍhāṃśca parvatān pattanāni ca | mandarasya ca ye koṭiṃ saṃśritāḥ kecidālayāḥ || 40.25 ||
Search the islands set within the ocean, the mountains and the cities, and whatever dwellings cling to the peak of Mount Mandara —
Shloka 26 (kishkindha.40.26)
कर्णप्रावरणाश्चैव तथा चाप्योष्ठकर्णकाः । घोरलोहमुखाश्चैव जवनाश्चैकपादकाः ॥ 40.26 ॥
karṇaprāvaraṇāścaiva tathā cāpyoṣṭhakarṇakāḥ | ghoralohamukhāścaiva javanāścaikapādakāḥ || 40.26 ||
the peoples who wrap themselves in their own ears, the lip-eared ones, the terrible iron-faced ones, the swift one-footed ones,
Shloka 27 (kishkindha.40.27)
अक्षया बलवन्तश्च तथैव पुरुषादकाः । किरातास्तीक्ष्णचूडाश्च हेमाभाः प्रियदर्शनाः ॥ 40.27 ॥
akṣayā balavantaśca tathaiva puruṣādakāḥ | kirātāstīkṣṇacūḍāśca hemābhāḥ priyadarśanāḥ || 40.27 ||
the tirelessly mighty man-eaters, the Kiratas with sharp top-knots, golden-hued and fair to look upon,
Shloka 28 (kishkindha.40.28)
आममीनाशनाश्चापि किराता द्वीपवासिनः । अन्तर्जलचरा घोरा नरव्याघ्रा इति स्मृताः ॥ 40.28 ॥
āmamīnāśanāścāpi kirātā dvīpavāsinaḥ | antarjalacarā ghorā naravyāghrā iti smṛtāḥ || 40.28 ||
the island-dwelling Kiratas who eat raw fish, and the terrible water-roving creatures known as 'tiger-men' —
Shloka 29 (kishkindha.40.29)
एतेषामाश्रयाः सर्वे विचेयाः काननौकसः । गिरिभिर्ये च गम्यन्ते प्लवनेन प्लवेन च ॥ 40.29 ॥
eteṣāmāśrayāḥ sarve viceyāḥ kānanaukasaḥ | giribhirye ca gamyante plavanena plavena ca || 40.29 ||
the haunts of all these forest-dwellers must be searched out, whether reached by mountain paths or by raft and by swimming.
Shloka 30 (kishkindha.40.30)
यत्नवन्तो यवद्वीपं सप्तराजोपशोभितम् । सुवर्णरूप्यकद्वीपं सुवर्णाकरमण्डितम् ॥ 40.30 ॥
yatnavanto yavadvīpaṃ saptarājopaśobhitam | suvarṇarūpyakadvīpaṃ suvarṇākaramaṇḍitam || 40.30 ||
Diligent, go as far as the isle of Yava, adorned with seven kingdoms — an isle rich in gold and silver, decked with mines of gold.
Shloka 31 (kishkindha.40.31)
यवद्वीपमतिक्रम्य शिशिरो नाम पर्वतः । दिवं स्पृशति शृङ्गेण देवदानवसेवितः ॥ 40.31 ॥
yavadvīpamatikramya śiśiro nāma parvataḥ | divaṃ spṛśati śṛṅgeṇa devadānavasevitaḥ || 40.31 ||
Beyond the isle of Yava stands the mountain named Shishira, touching the sky with its peak, frequented by gods and danavas.
Shloka 32 (kishkindha.40.32)
एतेषां गिरिदुर्गेषु प्रपातेषु वनेषु च । मार्गध्वं सहिताः सर्वे रामपत्नीं यशस्विनीम् ॥ 40.32 ॥
eteṣāṃ giridurgeṣu prapāteṣu vaneṣu ca | mārgadhvaṃ sahitāḥ sarve rāmapatnīṃ yaśasvinīm || 40.32 ||
In the fastnesses, precipices and forests of all these lands, search together for Rama's illustrious wife.
Shloka 33 (kishkindha.40.33)
ततो रक्तजलं प्राप्य शोणाख्यं शीघ्रवाहिनम् । गत्वा पारं समुद्रस्य सिद्धचारणसेवितम् ॥ 40.33 ॥
tato raktajalaṃ prāpya śoṇākhyaṃ śīghravāhinam | gatvā pāraṃ samudrasya siddhacāraṇasevitam || 40.33 ||
Then, having crossed the swift river of red water called Shona, and reached the far shore of the ocean, frequented by siddhas and charanas,
Shloka 34 (kishkindha.40.34)
तस्य तीर्थेषु रम्येषु विचित्रेषु वनेषु च । रावणः सह वैदेह्या मार्गितव्यस्ततस्ततः ॥ 40.34 ॥
tasya tīrtheṣu ramyeṣu vicitreṣu vaneṣu ca | rāvaṇaḥ saha vaidehyā mārgitavyastatastataḥ || 40.34 ||
Ravana, together with Vaidehi, must be sought there, place by place, in its lovely fords and its wondrous forests.
Shloka 35 (kishkindha.40.35)
पर्वतप्रभवा नद्यः सुभीमबहुनिष्कुटाः । मार्गितव्या दरीमन्तः पर्वताश्च वनानि च ॥ 40.35 ॥
parvataprabhavā nadyaḥ subhīmabahuniṣkuṭāḥ | mārgitavyā darīmantaḥ parvatāśca vanāni ca || 40.35 ||
The rivers that rise from the mountains, most terrible, with many wooded hollows, must be searched — the caverned mountains, and the forests.
Shloka 36 (kishkindha.40.36)
ततः समुद्रद्वीपांश्च सुभीमान् द्रष्टुमर्हथ । ऊर्मिमन्तं महारौद्रं क्रोशन्तमनिलोद्धतम् ॥ 40.36 ॥
tataḥ samudradvīpāṃśca subhīmān draṣṭumarhatha | ūrmimantaṃ mahāraudraṃ krośantamaniloddhatam || 40.36 ||
Then you shall see the most terrible islands of the ocean, its billowing water dreadful, roaring, whipped up by the wind,
Shloka 37 (kishkindha.40.37)
तत्रासुरा महाकायाश्छायां गृह्णन्ति नित्यशः । ब्रह्मणा समनुज्ञाता दीर्घकालं बुभुक्षिताः ॥ 40.37 ॥
tatrāsurā mahākāyāśchāyāṃ gṛhṇanti nityaśaḥ | brahmaṇā samanujñātā dīrghakālaṃ bubhukṣitāḥ || 40.37 ||
where huge-bodied asuras, permitted by Brahma, ever seize men's shadows, hungering for it since ages past.
Shloka 38 (kishkindha.40.38)
तं कालमेघप्रतिमं महोरगनिषेवितम् । अभिगम्य महानादं तीर्थेनैव महोदधिम् ॥ 40.38 ॥
taṃ kālameghapratimaṃ mahoraganiṣevitam | abhigamya mahānādaṃ tīrthenaiva mahodadhim || 40.38 ||
Having reached, by that ford, that great ocean resembling a dark cloud, thundering greatly, home to great serpents,
Shloka 39 (kishkindha.40.39)
ततो रक्तजलं भीमं लोहितं नाम सागरम् । गत्वा प्रेक्ष्यथ तां चैव बृहतीं कूटशाल्मलीम् ॥ 40.39 ॥
tato raktajalaṃ bhīmaṃ lohitaṃ nāma sāgaram | gatvā prekṣyatha tāṃ caiva bṛhatīṃ kūṭaśālmalīm || 40.39 ||
and then going to the terrible sea of red water named Lohita, you shall behold there the great Kutashalmali tree,
Shloka 40 (kishkindha.40.40)
गृहं च वैनतेयस्य नानारत्नविभूषितम् । तत्र कैलाससंकाशं विहितं विश्वकर्मणा ॥ 40.40 ॥
gṛhaṃ ca vainateyasya nānāratnavibhūṣitam | tatra kailāsasaṃkāśaṃ vihitaṃ viśvakarmaṇā || 40.40 ||
and the mansion of Vinata's son, Garuda, adorned with many jewels, resembling Kailasa, built by Vishvakarma.
Shloka 41 (kishkindha.40.41)
तत्र शैलनिभा भीमा मन्देहा नाम राक्षसाः । शैलशृङ्गेषु लम्बन्ते नानारूपा भयावहाः ॥ 40.41 ॥
tatra śailanibhā bhīmā mandehā nāma rākṣasāḥ | śailaśṛṅgeṣu lambante nānārūpā bhayāvahāḥ || 40.41 ||
There, mountain-huge and terrible rakshasas named Mandehas, of many forms, hang down from the mountain peaks.
Shloka 42 (kishkindha.40.42)
ते पतन्ति जले नित्यं सूर्यस्योदयनं प्रति । अभितप्ताः स्म सूर्येण लम्बन्ते स्म पुनः पुनः ॥ 40.42 ॥
te patanti jale nityaṃ sūryasyodayanaṃ prati | abhitaptāḥ sma sūryeṇa lambante sma punaḥ punaḥ || 40.42 ||
Every day, toward sunrise, they fall into the water, and scorched by the sun, hang there again and again,
Shloka 43 (kishkindha.40.43)
निहता ब्रह्मतेजोभिरहन्यहनि राक्षसाः । ततः पाण्डुरमेघाभं क्षीरोदं नाम सागरम् ॥ 40.43 ॥
nihatā brahmatejobhirahanyahani rākṣasāḥ | tataḥ pāṇḍurameghābhaṃ kṣīrodaṃ nāma sāgaram || 40.43 ||
and are slain daily by the power of a brahmin's austerity. Then, having gone to the pale, cloud-hued ocean named Kshiroda,
Shloka 44 (kishkindha.40.44)
गत्वा द्रक्ष्यथ दुर्धर्षा मुक्ताहारमिवोर्मिभिः । तस्य मध्ये महान् श्वेतो ऋषभो नाम पर्वतः ॥ 40.44 ॥
gatvā drakṣyatha durdharṣā muktāhāramivormibhiḥ | tasya madhye mahān śveto ṛṣabho nāma parvataḥ || 40.44 ||
you daring vanaras shall see it, its waves like a string of pearls; in its midst stands the great white mountain named Rishabha,
Shloka 45 (kishkindha.40.45)
दिव्यगन्धैः कुसुमितैराचितैश्च नगैर्वृतः । सरश्च राजतैः पद्मैर्ज्वलितैर्हेमकेसरैः ॥ 40.45 ॥
divyagandhaiḥ kusumitairācitaiśca nagairvṛtaḥ | saraśca rājataiḥ padmairjvalitairhemakesaraiḥ || 40.45 ||
ringed with divinely fragrant trees, blossoming and laden with fruit, and a lake bright with silvery lotuses ablaze with golden filaments,
Shloka 46 (kishkindha.40.46)
नाम्ना सुदर्शनं नाम राजहंसैः समाकुलम् । विबुधाश्चारणा यक्षाः किंनराश्चाप्सरोगणाः ॥ 40.46 ॥
nāmnā sudarśanaṃ nāma rājahaṃsaiḥ samākulam | vibudhāścāraṇā yakṣāḥ kiṃnarāścāpsarogaṇāḥ || 40.46 ||
named Sudarshana, thronging with royal swans, where gods, charanas, yakshas, kinnaras and hosts of apsaras
Shloka 47 (kishkindha.40.47)
हृष्टाः समधिगच्छन्ति नलिनीं तां रिरंसवः । क्षीरोदं समतिक्रम्य तदा द्रक्ष्यथ वानराः ॥ 40.47 ॥
hṛṣṭāḥ samadhigacchanti nalinīṃ tāṃ riraṃsavaḥ | kṣīrodaṃ samatikramya tadā drakṣyatha vānarāḥ || 40.47 ||
joyfully resort, wishing to sport in that lotus pool. Having crossed beyond the Sea of Milk, you vanaras shall then see —
Shloka 48 (kishkindha.40.48)
जलोदं सागरं शीघ्रं सर्वभूतभयावहम् । तत्र तत्कोपजं तेजः कृतं हयमुखं महत् ॥ 40.48 ॥
jalodaṃ sāgaraṃ śīghraṃ sarvabhūtabhayāvaham | tatra tatkopajaṃ tejaḥ kṛtaṃ hayamukhaṃ mahat || 40.48 ||
the sea named Jaloda, terrifying to all beings; there is that great horse-headed fire, born of a sage's wrath,
Shloka 49 (kishkindha.40.49)
अस्याहुस्तन्महावेगमोदनं सचराचरम् । तत्र विक्रोशतां नादो भूतानां सागरौकसाम् । श्रूयते चासमर्थानां दृष्ट्वाभूद् वडवामुखम् ॥ 40.49 ॥
asyāhustanmahāvegamodanaṃ sacarācaram | tatra vikrośatāṃ nādo bhūtānāṃ sāgaraukasām | śrūyate cāsamarthānāṃ dṛṣṭvābhūd vaḍavāmukham || 40.49 ||
which they call of tremendous force, consuming all moving and unmoving things; there is heard the wailing of helpless sea-dwelling creatures at the sight of that mare's-mouth flame.
Shloka 50 (kishkindha.40.50)
स्वादूदस्योत्तरे तीरे योजनानि त्रयोदश । जातरूपशिलो नाम सुमहान् कनकप्रभः ॥ 40.50 ॥
svādūdasyottare tīre yojanāni trayodaśa | jātarūpaśilo nāma sumahān kanakaprabhaḥ || 40.50 ||
In the land north of that ocean of sweet water, thirteen yojanas away, stands the very great, gold-radiant mountain named Jatarupashila.
Shloka 51 (kishkindha.40.51)
तत्र चन्द्रप्रतीकाशं पन्नगं धरणीधरम् । पद्मपत्रविशालाक्षं ततो द्रक्ष्यथ वानराः ॥ 40.51 ॥
tatra candrapratīkāśaṃ pannagaṃ dharaṇīdharam | padmapatraviśālākṣaṃ tato drakṣyatha vānarāḥ || 40.51 ||
There, vanaras, you shall see that serpent, radiant as the moon, bearing up the earth, his eyes wide as lotus petals,
Shloka 52 (kishkindha.40.52)
आसीनं पर्वतस्याग्रे सर्वदेवनमस्कृतम् । सहस्रशिरसं देवमनन्तं नीलवाससम् ॥ 40.52 ॥
āsīnaṃ parvatasyāgre sarvadevanamaskṛtam | sahasraśirasaṃ devamanantaṃ nīlavāsasam || 40.52 ||
seated upon the mountain's summit, worshipped by all beings — the thousand-headed god Ananta, clad in blue.
Shloka 53 (kishkindha.40.53)
त्रिशिराः काञ्चनः केतुस्तालस्तस्य महात्मनः । स्थापितः पर्वतस्याग्रे विराजति सवेदिकः ॥ 40.53 ॥
triśirāḥ kāñcanaḥ ketustālastasya mahātmanaḥ | sthāpitaḥ parvatasyāgre virājati savedikaḥ || 40.53 ||
Near that great being, set upon the mountain's summit, a three-crested golden palm-banner shines resplendent, together with its altar.
Shloka 54 (kishkindha.40.54)
पूर्वस्यां दिशि निर्माणं कृतं तत् त्रिदशेश्वरैः । ततः परं हेममयः श्रीमानुदयपर्वतः ॥ 40.54 ॥
pūrvasyāṃ diśi nirmāṇaṃ kṛtaṃ tat tridaśeśvaraiḥ | tataḥ paraṃ hemamayaḥ śrīmānudayaparvataḥ || 40.54 ||
This structure was raised in the eastern quarter by the lords of the gods; beyond it stands the golden, glorious mountain of sunrise, Udaya.
Shloka 55 (kishkindha.40.55)
तस्य कोटिर्दिवं स्पृष्ट्वा शतयोजनमायता । जातरूपमयी दिव्या विराजति सवेदिका ॥ 40.55 ॥
tasya koṭirdivaṃ spṛṣṭvā śatayojanamāyatā | jātarūpamayī divyā virājati savedikā || 40.55 ||
Its peak, touching the heavens, extends a hundred yojanas; there a divine golden altar shines resplendent,
Shloka 56 (kishkindha.40.56)
सालैस्तालैस्तमालैश्च कर्णिकारैश्च पुष्पितैः । जातरूपमयैर्दिव्यैः शोभते सूर्यसंनिभैः ॥ 40.56 ॥
sālaistālaistamālaiśca karṇikāraiśca puṣpitaiḥ | jātarūpamayairdivyaiḥ śobhate sūryasaṃnibhaiḥ || 40.56 ||
adorned with flowering sala, tala, tamala and karnikara trees, all divine and golden, radiant as the sun.
Shloka 57 (kishkindha.40.57)
तत्र योजनविस्तारमुच्छ्रितं दशयोजनम् । शृङ्गं सौमनसं नाम जातरूपमयं ध्रुवम् ॥ 40.57 ॥
tatra yojanavistāramucchritaṃ daśayojanam | śṛṅgaṃ saumanasaṃ nāma jātarūpamayaṃ dhruvam || 40.57 ||
There stands the peak named Saumanasa, one yojana in breadth and ten yojanas in height, of unshakable gold.
Shloka 58 (kishkindha.40.58)
तत्र पूर्वं पदं कृत्वा पुरा विष्णुस्त्रिविक्रमे । द्वितीयं शिखरे मेरोश्चकार पुरुषोत्तमः ॥ 40.58 ॥
tatra pūrvaṃ padaṃ kṛtvā purā viṣṇustrivikrame | dvitīyaṃ śikhare meroścakāra puruṣottamaḥ || 40.58 ||
There, long ago, Vishnu the Supreme Being, in his three strides, having set down his first step, planted his second upon this second peak of Meru.
Shloka 59 (kishkindha.40.59)
उत्तरेण परिक्रम्य जम्बूद्वीपं दिवाकरः । दृश्यो भवति भूयिष्ठं शिखरं तन्महोच्छ्रयम् ॥ 40.59 ॥
uttareṇa parikramya jambūdvīpaṃ divākaraḥ | dṛśyo bhavati bhūyiṣṭhaṃ śikharaṃ tanmahocchrayam || 40.59 ||
Circling round to the north, the sun becomes visible over most of Jambudvipa from that lofty peak.
Shloka 60 (kishkindha.40.60)
तत्र वैखानसा नाम वालखिल्या महर्षयः । प्रकाशमाना दृश्यन्ते सूर्यवर्णास्तपस्विनः ॥ 40.60 ॥
tatra vaikhānasā nāma vālakhilyā maharṣayaḥ | prakāśamānā dṛśyante sūryavarṇāstapasvinaḥ || 40.60 ||
There the great sages called Vaikhanasas and Valakhilyas, ascetics radiant as the sun, may be seen shining.
Shloka 61 (kishkindha.40.61)
अयं सुदर्शनो द्वीपः पुरो यस्य प्रकाशते । तस्मिंस्तेजश्च चक्षुश्च सर्वप्राणभृतामपि ॥ 40.61 ॥
ayaṃ sudarśano dvīpaḥ puro yasya prakāśate | tasmiṃstejaśca cakṣuśca sarvaprāṇabhṛtāmapi || 40.61 ||
This is the isle of Sudarshana, whose face shines resplendent; in it lies the very radiance and eye of all living beings.
Shloka 62 (kishkindha.40.62)
शैलस्य तस्य पृष्ठेषु कन्दरेषु वनेषु च । रावणः सह वैदेह्या मार्गितव्यस्ततस्ततः ॥ 40.62 ॥
śailasya tasya pṛṣṭheṣu kandareṣu vaneṣu ca | rāvaṇaḥ saha vaidehyā mārgitavyastatastataḥ || 40.62 ||
On the ridges of that mountain, in its caverns and forests, Ravana, together with Vaidehi, must be sought, place by place.
Shloka 63 (kishkindha.40.63)
काञ्चनस्य च शैलस्य सूर्यस्य च महात्मनः । आविष्टा तेजसा संध्या पूर्वा रक्ता प्रकाशते ॥ 40.63 ॥
kāñcanasya ca śailasya sūryasya ca mahātmanaḥ | āviṣṭā tejasā saṃdhyā pūrvā raktā prakāśate || 40.63 ||
Suffused with the splendour of that golden mountain and of the great sun, the eastern twilight glows red.
Shloka 64 (kishkindha.40.64)
पूर्वमेतत् कृतं द्वारं पृथिव्या भुवनस्य च । सूर्यस्योदयनं चैव पूर्वा ह्येषा दिगुच्यते ॥ 40.64 ॥
pūrvametat kṛtaṃ dvāraṃ pṛthivyā bhuvanasya ca | sūryasyodayanaṃ caiva pūrvā hyeṣā digucyate || 40.64 ||
This gate was made here, in ancient times, for the earth and the world, and it is the very place of the sun's rising; for this reason this quarter is called the eastern direction.
Shloka 65 (kishkindha.40.65)
तस्य शैलस्य पृष्ठेषु निर्झरेषु गुहासु च । रावणः सह वैदेह्या मार्गितव्यस्ततस्ततः ॥ 40.65 ॥
tasya śailasya pṛṣṭheṣu nirjhareṣu guhāsu ca | rāvaṇaḥ saha vaidehyā mārgitavyastatastataḥ || 40.65 ||
On the ridges of that mountain, in its cascades and its caves, Ravana, together with Vaidehi, must be sought, place by place.
Shloka 66 (kishkindha.40.66)
ततः परमगम्या स्याद् दिक्पूर्वा त्रिदशावृता । रहिता चन्द्रसूर्याभ्यामदृश्या तिमिरावृता ॥ 40.66 ॥
tataḥ paramagamyā syād dikpūrvā tridaśāvṛtā | rahitā candrasūryābhyāmadṛśyā timirāvṛtā || 40.66 ||
Beyond that, the eastern quarter becomes unapproachable — encompassed by the gods, without moon or sun, unseen, wrapped in darkness.
Shloka 67 (kishkindha.40.67)
शैलेषु तेषु सर्वेषु कन्दरेषु वनेषु च । ये च नोक्ता मयोद्देशा विचेया तेषु जानकी ॥ 40.67 ॥
śaileṣu teṣu sarveṣu kandareṣu vaneṣu ca | ye ca noktā mayoddeśā viceyā teṣu jānakī || 40.67 ||
In all these mountains, in the caverns and in the forests, seek out Janaki even in those places I have not named.
Shloka 68 (kishkindha.40.68)
एतावद् वानरैः शक्यं गन्तुं वानरपुङ्गवाः । अभास्करममर्यादं न जानीमस्ततः परम् ॥ 40.68 ॥
etāvad vānaraiḥ śakyaṃ gantuṃ vānarapuṅgavāḥ | abhāskaramamaryādaṃ na jānīmastataḥ param || 40.68 ||
This much, O bulls among vanaras, is as far as vanaras can travel; beyond it lies a sunless, boundless region of which we know nothing.
Shloka 69 (kishkindha.40.69)
अभिगम्य तु वैदेहीं निलयं रावणस्य च । मासे पूर्णे निवर्तध्वमुदयं प्राप्य पर्वतम् ॥ 40.69 ॥
abhigamya tu vaidehīṃ nilayaṃ rāvaṇasya ca | māse pūrṇe nivartadhvamudayaṃ prāpya parvatam || 40.69 ||
Having found Vaidehi and Ravana's abode, return, upon reaching Mount Udaya, when a full month has passed.
Shloka 70 (kishkindha.40.70)
ऊर्ध्वं मासान्न वस्तव्यं वसन् वध्यो भवेन्मम । सिद्धार्थाः संनिवर्तध्वमधिगम्य च मैथिलीम् ॥ 40.70 ॥
ūrdhvaṃ māsānna vastavyaṃ vasan vadhyo bhavenmama | siddhārthāḥ saṃnivartadhvamadhigamya ca maithilīm || 40.70 ||
You must not remain beyond a month; whoever stays shall be liable to be slain by me. Your purpose accomplished, having found Maithili, return.
Shloka 71 (kishkindha.40.71)
महेन्द्रकान्तां वनषण्डमण्डितां दिशं चरित्वा निपुणेन वानराः । अवाप्य सीतां रघुवंशजप्रियां ततो निवृत्ताः सुखिनो भविष्यथ ॥ 40.71 ॥
mahendrakāntāṃ vanaṣaṇḍamaṇḍitāṃ diśaṃ caritvā nipuṇena vānarāḥ | avāpya sītāṃ raghuvaṃśajapriyāṃ tato nivṛttāḥ sukhino bhaviṣyatha || 40.71 ||
Having ranged with skill, O vanaras, over that quarter beloved of Mahendra and adorned with groves of trees, and having found Sita, beloved of the race of Raghu, you shall then return and be happy."
