The Awakening of Hanuman
Shloka 1 (kishkindha.66.1)
अनेकशतसाहस्रीं विषण्णां हरिवाहिनीम् । जाम्बवान् समुदीक्ष्यैवं हनूमन्तमथाब्रवीत् ॥ 66.1 ॥
anekaśatasāhasrīṃ viṣaṇṇāṃ harivāhinīm | jāmbavān samudīkṣyaivaṃ hanūmantamathābravīt || 66.1 ||
Jambavan, having watched the monkey army, with its many hundreds of thousands, sunk in dejection, then spoke thus to Hanuman.
Shloka 2 (kishkindha.66.2)
वीर वानरलोकस्य सर्वशास्त्रविदां वर । तूष्णीमेकान्तमाश्रित्य हनूमन् किं न जल्पसि ॥ 66.2 ॥
vīra vānaralokasya sarvaśāstravidāṃ vara | tūṣṇīmekāntamāśritya hanūman kiṃ na jalpasi || 66.2 ||
'O hero, foremost among all who know the scriptures in the world of monkeys, why, Hanuman, do you sit silently apart, saying nothing?'
Shloka 3 (kishkindha.66.3)
हनूमन् हरिराजस्य सुग्रीवस्य समो ह्यसि । रामलक्ष्मणयोश्चापि तेजसा च बलेन च ॥ 66.3 ॥
hanūman harirājasya sugrīvasya samo hyasi | rāmalakṣmaṇayoścāpi tejasā ca balena ca || 66.3 ||
'Hanuman, in splendor and in strength you are indeed equal to Sugriva, the king of monkeys, and even to Rama and Lakshmana.'
Shloka 4 (kishkindha.66.4)
अरिष्टनेमिनः पुत्रो वैनतेयो महाबलः । गरुत्मानिव विख्यात उत्तमः सर्वपक्षिणाम् ॥ 66.4 ॥
ariṣṭaneminaḥ putro vainateyo mahābalaḥ | garutmāniva vikhyāta uttamaḥ sarvapakṣiṇām || 66.4 ||
'There is the greatly mighty son of Vinata, renowned as Garuda, the best of all birds, son of Aristanemi.'
Shloka 5 (kishkindha.66.5)
बहुशो हि मया दृष्टः सागरे स महाबलः । भुजङ्गानुद्धरन् पक्षी महाबाहुर्महाबलः ॥ 66.5 ॥
bahuśo hi mayā dṛṣṭaḥ sāgare sa mahābalaḥ | bhujaṅgānuddharan pakṣī mahābāhurmahābalaḥ || 66.5 ||
'I have often seen that mighty, swift and glorious bird lifting up serpents from the ocean.'
Shloka 6 (kishkindha.66.6)
पक्षयोर्यद् बलं तस्य भुजवीर्यबलं तव । विक्रमश्चापि वेगश्च न ते तेनापहीयते ॥ 66.6 ॥
pakṣayoryad balaṃ tasya bhujavīryabalaṃ tava | vikramaścāpi vegaśca na te tenāpahīyate || 66.6 ||
'Whatever strength lies in his wings, that much strength lies in your arms; nor are your daring and speed inferior to his.'
Shloka 7 (kishkindha.66.7)
बलं बुद्धिश्च तेजश्च सत्त्वं च हरिपुङ्गव । विशिष्टं सर्वभूतेषु किमात्मानं न सज्जसे ॥ 66.7 ॥
balaṃ buddhiśca tejaśca sattvaṃ ca haripuṅgava | viśiṣṭaṃ sarvabhūteṣu kimātmānaṃ na sajjase || 66.7 ||
'O best of monkeys, in strength, intellect, splendor and fortitude you excel among all beings — why then do you not ready yourself?'
Shloka 8 (kishkindha.66.8)
अप्सराऽप्सरसां श्रेष्ठा विख्याता पुञ्जिकस्थला । अञ्जनेति परिख्याता पत्नी केसरिणो हरेः ॥ 66.8 ॥
apsarā'psarasāṃ śreṣṭhā vikhyātā puñjikasthalā | añjaneti parikhyātā patnī kesariṇo hareḥ || 66.8 ||
'The apsara Punjikasthala, most excellent of apsaras, renowned by the name Anjana, was the wife of Kesari, the monkey.'
Shloka 9 (kishkindha.66.9)
विख्याता त्रिषु लोकेषु रूपेणाप्रतिमा भुवि । अभिशापादभूत् तात कपित्वे कामरूपिणी ॥ 66.9 ॥
vikhyātā triṣu lokeṣu rūpeṇāpratimā bhuvi | abhiśāpādabhūt tāta kapitve kāmarūpiṇī || 66.9 ||
'Renowned in the three worlds for her unrivalled beauty, dear boy, she became, through a curse, one who could change form at will, in monkey-form on earth.'
Shloka 10 (kishkindha.66.10)
दुहिता वानरेन्द्रस्य कुञ्जरस्य महात्मनः । मानुषं विग्रहं कृत्वा रूपयौवनशालिनी ॥ 66.10 ॥
duhitā vānarendrasya kuñjarasya mahātmanaḥ | mānuṣaṃ vigrahaṃ kṛtvā rūpayauvanaśālinī || 66.10 ||
'Born as the daughter of the great-souled monkey lord Kunjara, radiant with beauty and youth,'
Shloka 11 (kishkindha.66.11)
विचित्रमाल्याभरणा कदाचित् क्षौमधारिणी । अचरत् पर्वतस्याग्रे प्रावृडम्बुदसंनिभे ॥ 66.11 ॥
vicitramālyābharaṇā kadācit kṣaumadhāriṇī | acarat parvatasyāgre prāvṛḍambudasaṃnibhe || 66.11 ||
'adorned with wondrous garlands and ornaments, clad at times in fine silk, she once wandered on a mountain's summit, like a cloud of the rainy season.'
Shloka 12 (kishkindha.66.12)
तस्या वस्त्रं विशालाक्ष्याः पीतं रक्तदशं शुभम् । स्थितायाः पर्वतस्याग्रे मारुतोऽपाहरच्छनैः ॥ 66.12 ॥
tasyā vastraṃ viśālākṣyāḥ pītaṃ raktadaśaṃ śubham | sthitāyāḥ parvatasyāgre māruto'pāharacchanaiḥ || 66.12 ||
'As that wide-eyed lady stood upon the mountain-top, the wind slowly stole away her lovely yellow garment with its red border.'
Shloka 13 (kishkindha.66.13)
स ददर्श ततस्तस्या वृत्तावूरू सुसंहतौ । स्तनौ च पीनौ सहितौ सुजातं चारु चाननम् ॥ 66.13 ॥
sa dadarśa tatastasyā vṛttāvūrū susaṃhatau | stanau ca pīnau sahitau sujātaṃ cāru cānanam || 66.13 ||
'Then he beheld her round, close-set thighs, her full and paired breasts, and her lovely, well-formed face.'
Shloka 14 (kishkindha.66.14)
तां बलादायतश्रोणीं तनुमध्यां यशस्विनीम् । दृष्ट्वैव शुभसर्वाङ्गीं पवनः काममोहितः ॥ 66.14 ॥
tāṃ balādāyataśroṇīṃ tanumadhyāṃ yaśasvinīm | dṛṣṭvaiva śubhasarvāṅgīṃ pavanaḥ kāmamohitaḥ || 66.14 ||
'Just at the sight of her, ample-hipped, slender-waisted, the glorious one, every limb of hers auspicious, the Wind-god was overcome by desire.'
Shloka 15 (kishkindha.66.15)
स तां भुजाभ्यां दीर्घाभ्यां पर्यष्वजत मारुतः । मन्मथाविष्टसर्वाङ्गो गतात्मा तामनिन्दिताम् ॥ 66.15 ॥
sa tāṃ bhujābhyāṃ dīrghābhyāṃ paryaṣvajata mārutaḥ | manmathāviṣṭasarvāṅgo gatātmā tāmaninditām || 66.15 ||
'The Wind-god, his whole being seized by love, his heart utterly lost, embraced that blameless woman with his two long arms.'
Shloka 16 (kishkindha.66.16)
सा तु तत्रैव सम्भ्रान्ता सुव्रता वाक्यमब्रवीत् । एकपत्नीव्रतमिदं को नाशयितुमिच्छति ॥ 66.16 ॥
sā tu tatraiva sambhrāntā suvratā vākyamabravīt | ekapatnīvratamidaṃ ko nāśayitumicchati || 66.16 ||
'She, bewildered at this, being of virtuous conduct, spoke these words: 'Who wishes to destroy this vow of mine to a single husband?''
Shloka 17 (kishkindha.66.17)
अञ्जनाया वचः श्रुत्वा मारुतः प्रत्यभाषत । न त्वां हिंसामि सुश्रोणि मा भूत् ते मनसो भयम् ॥ 66.17 ॥
añjanāyā vacaḥ śrutvā mārutaḥ pratyabhāṣata | na tvāṃ hiṃsāmi suśroṇi mā bhūt te manaso bhayam || 66.17 ||
'Hearing Anjana's words, the Wind-god replied: 'O fair-hipped one, I do not violate you; let there be no fear in your heart.''
Shloka 18 (kishkindha.66.18)
मनसास्मि गतो यत् त्वां परिष्वज्य यशस्विनि । वीर्यवान् बुद्धिसम्पन्नस्तव पुत्रो भविष्यति ॥ 66.18 ॥
manasāsmi gato yat tvāṃ pariṣvajya yaśasvini | vīryavān buddhisampannastava putro bhaviṣyati || 66.18 ||
'By reason of my having embraced you in mind, O glorious one, a mighty and intelligent son will be born to you.'
Shloka 19 (kishkindha.66.19)
महासत्त्वो महातेजा महाबलपराक्रमः । लङ्घने प्लवने चैव भविष्यति मया समः ॥ 66.19 ॥
mahāsattvo mahātejā mahābalaparākramaḥ | laṅghane plavane caiva bhaviṣyati mayā samaḥ || 66.19 ||
'Greatly valiant, of great splendor, of great strength and prowess, he shall be equal to me in leaping and in flight.'
Shloka 20 (kishkindha.66.20)
एवमुक्ता ततस्तुष्टा जननी ते महाकपे । गुहायां त्वां महाबाहो प्रजज्ञे प्लवगर्षभ ॥ 66.20 ॥
evamuktā tatastuṣṭā jananī te mahākape | guhāyāṃ tvāṃ mahābāho prajajñe plavagarṣabha || 66.20 ||
'When she was spoken to thus, O mighty-armed one, your mother, greatly pleased, gave birth to you, O bull among leapers, in a cave.'
Shloka 21 (kishkindha.66.21)
अभ्युत्थितं ततः सूर्यं बालो दृष्ट्वा महावने । फलं चेति जिघृक्षुस्त्वमुत्प्लुत्याभ्युत्पतो दिवम् ॥ 66.21 ॥
abhyutthitaṃ tataḥ sūryaṃ bālo dṛṣṭvā mahāvane | phalaṃ ceti jighṛkṣustvamutplutyābhyutpato divam || 66.21 ||
'Then, as a child in the great forest, seeing the sun just risen, thinking it a fruit and wishing to seize it, you leapt up and flew into the sky.'
Shloka 22 (kishkindha.66.22)
शतानि त्रीणि गत्वाथ योजनानां महाकपे । तेजसा तस्य निर्धूतो न विषादं गतस्ततः ॥ 66.22 ॥
śatāni trīṇi gatvātha yojanānāṃ mahākape | tejasā tasya nirdhūto na viṣādaṃ gatastataḥ || 66.22 ||
'Having gone three hundred yojanas, O great monkey, though buffeted by his radiance, you did not fall into despair.'
Shloka 23 (kishkindha.66.23)
त्वामप्युपगतं तूर्णमन्तरिक्षं महाकपे । क्षिप्तमिन्द्रेण ते वज्रं कोपाविष्टेन तेजसा ॥ 66.23 ॥
tvāmapyupagataṃ tūrṇamantarikṣaṃ mahākape | kṣiptamindreṇa te vajraṃ kopāviṣṭena tejasā || 66.23 ||
'Then, O great monkey, as you swiftly approached the sky, Indra, seized with anger, hurled his thunderbolt, blazing with fury, at you.'
Shloka 24 (kishkindha.66.24)
तदा शैलाग्रशिखरे वामो हनुरभज्यत । ततो हि नामधेयं ते हनुमानिति कीर्तितम् ॥ 66.24 ॥
tadā śailāgraśikhare vāmo hanurabhajyata | tato hi nāmadheyaṃ te hanumāniti kīrtitam || 66.24 ||
'Then your left jaw was broken upon the mountain's peak; and from that, your name was proclaimed as Hanuman.'
Shloka 25 (kishkindha.66.25)
ततस्त्वां निहतं दृष्ट्वा वायुर्गन्धवहः स्वयम् । त्रैलोक्यं भृशसंक्रुद्धो न ववौ वै प्रभञ्जनः ॥ 66.25 ॥
tatastvāṃ nihataṃ dṛṣṭvā vāyurgandhavahaḥ svayam | trailokyaṃ bhṛśasaṃkruddho na vavau vai prabhañjanaḥ || 66.25 ||
'Then the Wind-god, the carrier of fragrance, seeing you struck down, was himself so greatly enraged that he ceased to blow through the three worlds.'
Shloka 26 (kishkindha.66.26)
सम्भ्रान्ताश्च सुराः सर्वे त्रैलोक्ये क्षुभिते सति । प्रसादयन्ति संक्रुद्धं मारुतं भुवनेश्वराः ॥ 66.26 ॥
sambhrāntāśca surāḥ sarve trailokye kṣubhite sati | prasādayanti saṃkruddhaṃ mārutaṃ bhuvaneśvarāḥ || 66.26 ||
'All the gods, bewildered as the three worlds fell into turmoil, began to appease the enraged Wind-god, those lords of creation.'
Shloka 27 (kishkindha.66.27)
प्रसादिते च पवने ब्रह्मा तुभ्यं वरं ददौ । अशस्त्रवध्यतां तात समरे सत्यविक्रम ॥ 66.27 ॥
prasādite ca pavane brahmā tubhyaṃ varaṃ dadau | aśastravadhyatāṃ tāta samare satyavikrama || 66.27 ||
'When the Wind-god was appeased, Brahma gave you a boon, O true-valianted one, dear child: that you could not be slain in battle by any weapon.'
Shloka 28 (kishkindha.66.28)
वज्रस्य च निपातेन विरुजं त्वां समीक्ष्य च । सहस्रनेत्रः प्रीतात्मा ददौ ते वरमुत्तमम् ॥ 66.28 ॥
vajrasya ca nipātena virujaṃ tvāṃ samīkṣya ca | sahasranetraḥ prītātmā dadau te varamuttamam || 66.28 ||
'And seeing you unhurt even by the fall of his thunderbolt, the thousand-eyed Indra, his heart delighted, also gave you an excellent boon:'
Shloka 29 (kishkindha.66.29)
स्वच्छन्दतश्च मरणं तव स्यादिति वै प्रभो । स त्वं केसरिणः पुत्रः क्षेत्रजो भीमविक्रमः ॥ 66.29 ॥
svacchandataśca maraṇaṃ tava syāditi vai prabho | sa tvaṃ kesariṇaḥ putraḥ kṣetrajo bhīmavikramaḥ || 66.29 ||
'that your death, O lord, would come only by your own will. Such are you: son of Kesari through the field of marriage, of fearsome valor,'
Shloka 30 (kishkindha.66.30)
मारुतस्यौरसः पुत्रस्तेजसा चापि तत्समः । त्वं हि वायुसुतो वत्स प्लवने चापि तत्समः ॥ 66.30 ॥
mārutasyaurasaḥ putrastejasā cāpi tatsamaḥ | tvaṃ hi vāyusuto vatsa plavane cāpi tatsamaḥ || 66.30 ||
'and the very own son of the Wind-god, his equal in splendor as well; you are indeed the Wind-god's son, dear child, his equal too in flight.'
Shloka 31 (kishkindha.66.31)
वयमद्य गतप्राणा भवानस्मासु साम्प्रतम् । दाक्ष्यविक्रमसम्पन्नः कपिराज इवापरः ॥ 66.31 ॥
vayamadya gataprāṇā bhavānasmāsu sāmpratam | dākṣyavikramasampannaḥ kapirāja ivāparaḥ || 66.31 ||
'We today are as good as lifeless; you alone among us now are endowed with skill and valor, like another king of monkeys.'
Shloka 32 (kishkindha.66.32)
त्रिविक्रमे मया तात सशैलवनकानना । त्रिःसप्तकृत्वः पृथिवी परिक्रान्ता प्रदक्षिणम् ॥ 66.32 ॥
trivikrame mayā tāta saśailavanakānanā | triḥsaptakṛtvaḥ pṛthivī parikrāntā pradakṣiṇam || 66.32 ||
'Dear child, during the Trivikrama incarnation I circled the earth with its mountains, forests and thickets twenty-one times, in circumambulation.'
Shloka 33 (kishkindha.66.33)
तथा चौषधयोऽस्माभिः संचिता देवशासनात् । निर्मथ्यममृतं याभिस्तदानीं नो महद्बलम् ॥ 66.33 ॥
tathā cauṣadhayo'smābhiḥ saṃcitā devaśāsanāt | nirmathyamamṛtaṃ yābhistadānīṃ no mahadabalam || 66.33 ||
'And likewise, by the gods' command, we gathered the herbs from which the nectar of immortality was to be churned; such was our great strength then.'
Shloka 34 (kishkindha.66.34)
स इदानीमहं वृद्धः परिहीनपराक्रमः । साम्प्रतं कालमस्माकं भवान् सर्वगुणान्वितः ॥ 66.34 ॥
sa idānīmahaṃ vṛddhaḥ parihīnaparākramaḥ | sāmprataṃ kālamasmākaṃ bhavān sarvaguṇānvitaḥ || 66.34 ||
'Such as I am, I am now old, my valor altogether spent; but at this present time, you alone among us are endowed with every excellence.'
Shloka 35 (kishkindha.66.35)
तद् विजृम्भस्व विक्रान्त प्लवतामुत्तमो ह्यसि । त्वद्वीर्यं द्रष्टुकामा हि सर्वा वानरवाहिनी ॥ 66.35 ॥
tad vijṛmbhasva vikrānta plavatāmuttamo hyasi | tvadvīryaṃ draṣṭukāmā hi sarvā vānaravāhinī || 66.35 ||
'Therefore, O mighty one, bestir yourself, for you are indeed the foremost among leapers; this whole army of monkeys longs to witness your valor.'
Shloka 36 (kishkindha.66.36)
उत्तिष्ठ हरिशार्दूल लङ्घयस्व महार्णवम् । परा हि सर्वभूतानां हनुमन् या गतिस्तव ॥ 66.36 ॥
uttiṣṭha hariśārdūla laṅghayasva mahārṇavam | parā hi sarvabhūtānāṃ hanuman yā gatistava || 66.36 ||
'Arise, O tiger among monkeys, and leap across the great ocean; for, Hanuman, your prowess among all beings is unmatched.'
Shloka 37 (kishkindha.66.37)
विषण्णा हरयः सर्वे हनुमन् किमुपेक्षसे । विक्रमस्व महावेग विष्णुस्त्रीन् विक्रमानिव ॥ 66.37 ॥
viṣaṇṇā harayaḥ sarve hanuman kimupekṣase | vikramasva mahāvega viṣṇustrīn vikramāniva || 66.37 ||
'All the monkeys are dejected, Hanuman; why do you hold back? Show your might, O one of great speed, as Vishnu did with his three strides.'
Shloka 38 (kishkindha.66.38)
ततः कपीनामृषभेण चोदितः प्रतीतवेगः पवनात्मजः कपिः । प्रहर्षयंस्तां हरिवीरवाहिनीं चकार रूपं महदात्मनस्तदा ॥ 66.38 ॥
tataḥ kapīnāmṛṣabheṇa coditaḥ pratītavegaḥ pavanātmajaḥ kapiḥ | praharṣayaṃstāṃ harivīravāhinīṃ cakāra rūpaṃ mahadātmanastadā || 66.38 ||
Then, thus urged on by the foremost of monkeys, Jambavan, that monkey, the son of the Wind-god, of well-known speed, gladdening the army of monkey-heroes, made his own form grow immense.
