'There is none in this world who could withstand my speed in leaping. Here on this mountain are these crags, thronged with clefts of rock,'

Shloka 37 (kishkindha.67.37)

'the peaks of Mahendra, firm and vast — from these peaks of Mahendra shall I take my running start.'

Shloka 38 (kishkindha.67.38)

nānādrumavikīrṇeṣu dhātuniṣpandaśobhiṣu | etāni mama vegaṃ hi śikharāṇi mahānti ca || 67.38 ||

'Strewn with diverse trees, resplendent with unmoving mineral ores — these vast peaks shall bear the brunt of my speed'

Shloka 39 (kishkindha.67.39)

plavato dhārayiṣyanti yojanānāmitaḥ śatam | tatastu mārutaprakhyaḥ sa harirmārutātmajaḥ | āruroha nagaśreṣṭhaṃ mahendramarimardanaḥ || 67.39 ||

'as I leap forth a hundred yojanas from here.' Then that monkey, renowned as the Wind-god's equal, son of the Wind-god, subduer of foes, climbed up that best of mountains, Mahendra —

Shloka 40 (kishkindha.67.40)

vṛtaṃ nānāvidhaiḥ puṣpairmṛgasevitaśādvalam | latākusumasambādhaṃ nityapuṣpaphaladrumam || 67.40 ||

— covered with flowers of every kind, its meadows frequented by deer, thick with the blossoms of creepers, with trees ever in flower and fruit,

Shloka 41 (kishkindha.67.41)

siṃhaśārdūlasahitaṃ mattamātaṅgasevitam | mattadvijagaṇoda‍ghuṣṭaṃ salilotpīḍasaṃkulam || 67.41 ||

roamed by lions and tigers, frequented by rutting elephants, resounding with flocks of intoxicated birds, and thronged with gushing springs of water.

Shloka 42 (kishkindha.67.42)

mahadbhirucchritaṃ śṛṅgairmahendraṃ sa mahābalaḥ | vicacāra hariśreṣṭho mahendrasamavikramaḥ || 67.42 ||

That mighty one, that foremost of monkeys, equal in prowess to Mount Mahendra itself, ranged over Mahendra, towering with its lofty peaks.

Shloka 43 (kishkindha.67.43)

pādābhyāṃ pīḍitastena mahāśailo mahātmanā | rarāsa siṃhābhihato mahān matta iva dvipaḥ || 67.43 ||

Pressed by the feet of that great-souled one, the huge mountain roared, like a great, rutting elephant struck by a lion.

Shloka 44 (kishkindha.67.44)

mumoca salilotpīḍān viprakīrṇaśiloccayaḥ | vitrastamṛgamātaṅgaḥ prakampitamahādrumaḥ || 67.44 ||

Its heaped-up boulders scattered wide, it let loose gushing torrents of water; its beasts and elephants were terrified, its great trees shaken through.

Shloka 45 (kishkindha.67.45)

nānāgandharvamithunaiḥ pānasaṃsargakarkaśaiḥ | utpatadbhirvihaṃgaiśca vidyādharagaṇairapi || 67.45 ||

With the many pairs of gandharvas, harsh with the effects of drink, taking flight, and with the flocks of birds and hosts of vidyadharas likewise fleeing,

Shloka 46 (kishkindha.67.46)

tyajyamānamahāsānuḥ saṃnilīnamahoragaḥ | śailaśṛṅgaśilotpātastadābhūt sa mahāgiriḥ || 67.46 ||

its great ridges being abandoned, its great serpents shrinking utterly out of sight, that great mountain then became a place of toppling mountain-crags and rocks.

Shloka 47 (kishkindha.67.47)

niḥśvasadbhistadā taistu bhujagairardhaniḥsṛtaiḥ | sapatāka ivābhāti sa tadā dharaṇīdharaḥ || 67.47 ||

With its serpents, then, sighing and half-emerged from their lairs, that earth-bearing mountain seemed, at that moment, to gleam as though decked with banners.

Shloka 48 (kishkindha.67.48)

ṛṣibhistrāsasambhrāntaistyajyamānaḥ śiloccayaḥ | sīdan mahati kāntāre sārthahīna ivādhvagaḥ || 67.48 ||

Forsaken by the sages, bewildered with fright, that towering mass of rock, sinking down in the great wilderness, seemed like a wayfarer bereft of his companions.

Shloka 49 (kishkindha.67.49)

sa vegavān vegasamāhitātmā haripravīraḥ paravīrahantā | manaḥ samādhāya mahānubhāvo jagāma laṅkāṃ manasā manasvī || 67.49 ||

That swift one, his spirit collected in his speed, that foremost hero of monkeys, slayer of enemy champions, that great and noble-minded one, having fixed his mind, made his way to Lanka, resolute in soul.
