Sita's Lament in the Ashoka Grove

Shloka 1 (sundara.26.1)

प्रसक्ताश्रुमुखी त्वेवं ब्रुवती जनकात्मजा । अधोगतमुखी बाला विलप्तुमुपचक्रमे ॥ 26.1 ॥

prasaktāśrumukhī tvevaṃ bruvatī janakātmajā | adhogatamukhī bālā vilaptumupacakrame || 26.1 ||

Speaking thus with a face streaming with tears, Janaka's daughter, the young Sita, bowed her head and began to weep.

Shloka 2 (sundara.26.2)

उन्मत्तेव प्रमत्तेव भ्रान्तचित्तेव शोचती । उपावृत्ता किशोरीव विचेष्टन्ती महीतले ॥ 26.2 ॥

unmatteva pramatteva bhrāntacitteva śocatī | upāvṛttā kiśorīva viceṣṭantī mahītale || 26.2 ||

She grieved like one gone mad, like one intoxicated, like one whose mind was deranged, tossing and rolling on the ground like a young mare.

Shloka 3 (sundara.26.3)

राघवस्य प्रमत्तस्य रक्षसा कामरूपिणा । रावणेन प्रमथ्याहमानीता क्रोशती बलात् ॥ 26.3 ॥

rāghavasya pramattasya rakṣasā kāmarūpiṇā | rāvaṇena pramathyāhamānītā krośatī balāt || 26.3 ||

"While Raghava was distracted, I was seized by force and carried off, crying out, by the shape-shifting demon Ravana."

Shloka 4 (sundara.26.4)

राक्षसीवशमापन्ना भर्त्स्यमाना च दारुणम् । चिन्तयन्ती सुदुःखार्ता नाहं जीवितुमुत्सहे ॥ 26.4 ॥

rākṣasīvaśamāpannā bhartsyamānā ca dāruṇam | cintayantī suduḥkhārtā nāhaṃ jīvitumutsahe || 26.4 ||

"Fallen into the power of these ogresses, cruelly threatened, tormented with grief as I brood, I have no wish to go on living."

Shloka 5 (sundara.26.5)

नहि मे जीवितेनार्थो नैवार्थैर्न च भूषणैः । वसन्त्या राक्षसीमध्ये विना रामं महारथम् ॥ 26.5 ॥

nahi me jīvitenārtho naivārthairna ca bhūṣaṇaiḥ | vasantyā rākṣasīmadhye vinā rāmaṃ mahāratham || 26.5 ||

"Living here amid these ogresses, without Rama the great chariot-warrior, I have no use for life, nor for wealth, nor for ornaments."

Shloka 6 (sundara.26.6)

अश्मसारमिदं नूनमथवाप्यजरामरम् । हृदयं मम येनेदं न दुःखेन विशीर्यते ॥ 26.6 ॥

aśmasāramidaṃ nūnamathavāpyajarāmaram | hṛdayaṃ mama yenedaṃ na duḥkhena viśīryate || 26.6 ||

"Surely this heart of mine is made of iron, or else undecaying and deathless - for it does not shatter under this grief."

Shloka 7 (sundara.26.7)

धिङ्मामनार्यामसतीं याहं तेन विना कृता । मुहूर्तमपि जीवामि जीवितं पापजीविका ॥ 26.7 ॥

dhiṅmāmanāryāmasatīṃ yāhaṃ tena vinā kṛtā | muhūrtamapi jīvāmi jīvitaṃ pāpajīvikā || 26.7 ||

"Shame on me, ignoble and unchaste, that though made to be without him, I, of sinful life, go on living even for a moment."

Shloka 8 (sundara.26.8)

चरणेनापि सव्येन न स्पृशेयं निशाचरम् । रावणं किं पुनरहं कामयेयं विगर्हितम् ॥ 26.8 ॥

caraṇenāpi savyena na spṛśeyaṃ niśācaram | rāvaṇaṃ kiṃ punarahaṃ kāmayeyaṃ vigarhitam || 26.8 ||

"I would not touch that night-wanderer Ravana even with my left foot - how then could I ever desire that despicable one?"

Shloka 9 (sundara.26.9)

प्रत्याख्यानं न जानाति नात्मानं नात्मनः कुलम् । यो नृशंसस्वभावेन मां प्रार्थयितुमिच्छति ॥ 26.9 ॥

pratyākhyānaṃ na jānāti nātmānaṃ nātmanaḥ kulam | yo nṛśaṃsasvabhāvena māṃ prārthayitumicchati || 26.9 ||

"That cruel-natured one who desires to woo me knows neither that he will be refused, nor himself, nor his own lineage."

Shloka 10 (sundara.26.10)

छिन्ना भिन्ना प्रभिन्ना वा दीप्ता वाग्नौ प्रदीपिता । रावणं नोपतिष्ठेयं किं प्रलापेन वश्चिरम् ॥ 26.10 ॥

chinnā bhinnā prabhinnā vā dīptā vāgnau pradīpitā | rāvaṇaṃ nopatiṣṭheyaṃ kiṃ pralāpena vaściram || 26.10 ||

"Even if cut apart, torn asunder, or set ablaze in burning fire, I would never go to Ravana - what use is your prattling any longer?"

Shloka 11 (sundara.26.11)

ख्यातः प्राज्ञः कृतज्ञश्च सानुक्रोशश्च राघवः । सद्वृत्तो निरनुक्रोशः शङ्के मद्भाग्यसंक्षयात् ॥ 26.11 ॥

khyātaḥ prājñaḥ kṛtajñaśca sānukrośaśca rāghavaḥ | sadvṛtto niranukrośaḥ śaṅke madbhāgyasaṃkṣayāt || 26.11 ||

"Raghava is renowned, wise, grateful, compassionate, and of noble conduct - yet I suspect it is only the ruin of my own fortune that has made him seem without pity."

Shloka 12 (sundara.26.12)

राक्षसानां जनस्थाने सहस्राणि चतुर्दश । एकेनैव निरस्तानि स मां किं नाभिपद्यते ॥ 26.12 ॥

rākṣasānāṃ janasthāne sahasrāṇi caturdaśa | ekenaiva nirastāni sa māṃ kiṃ nābhipadyate || 26.12 ||

"He by whose hand alone fourteen thousand demons in Janasthana were destroyed - why does that same Rama not come to claim me?"

Shloka 13 (sundara.26.13)

निरुद्धा रावणेनाहमल्पवीर्येण रक्षसा । समर्थः खलु मे भर्ता रावणं हन्तुमाहवे ॥ 26.13 ॥

niruddhā rāvaṇenāhamalpavīryeṇa rakṣasā | samarthaḥ khalu me bhartā rāvaṇaṃ hantumāhave || 26.13 ||

"I am held captive by this Ravana, a demon of little real strength - surely my husband is well able to slay Ravana in battle."

Shloka 14 (sundara.26.14)

विराधो दण्डकारण्ये येन राक्षसपुंगवः । रणे रामेण निहतः स मां किं नाभिपद्यते ॥ 26.14 ॥

virādho daṇḍakāraṇye yena rākṣasapuṃgavaḥ | raṇe rāmeṇa nihataḥ sa māṃ kiṃ nābhipadyate || 26.14 ||

"He by whom Viradha, foremost among ogres, was slain in battle in the Dandaka forest - why does that Rama not come to claim me?"

Shloka 15 (sundara.26.15)

कामं मध्ये समुद्रस्य लङ्केयं दुष्प्रधर्षणा । न तु राघवबाणानां गतिरोधो भविष्यति ॥ 26.15 ॥

kāmaṃ madhye samudrasya laṅkeyaṃ duṣpradharṣaṇā | na tu rāghavabāṇānāṃ gatirodho bhaviṣyati || 26.15 ||

"Though this Lanka amid the ocean is indeed hard to assail, still there will be no obstacle to the flight of Raghava's arrows."

Shloka 16 (sundara.26.16)

किं नु तत् कारणं येन रामो दृढपराक्रमः । रक्षसापहृतां भार्यामिष्टां यो नाभिपद्यते ॥ 26.16 ॥

kiṃ nu tat kāraṇaṃ yena rāmo dṛḍhaparākramaḥ | rakṣasāpahṛtāṃ bhāryāmiṣṭāṃ yo nābhipadyate || 26.16 ||

"What then can be the reason that Rama of firm valor does not come to claim his beloved wife, carried off by a demon?"

Shloka 17 (sundara.26.17)

इहस्थां मां न जानीते शङ्के लक्ष्मणपूर्वजः । जानन्नपि स तेजस्वी धर्षणां मर्षयिष्यति ॥ 26.17 ॥

ihasthāṃ māṃ na jānīte śaṅke lakṣmaṇapūrvajaḥ | jānannapi sa tejasvī dharṣaṇāṃ marṣayiṣyati || 26.17 ||

"I suspect that Lakshmana's elder brother does not know I am here - yet, knowing it, would that glorious one really tolerate this outrage?"

Shloka 18 (sundara.26.18)

हृतेति मां योऽधिगत्य राघवाय निवेदयेत् । गृध्रराजोऽपि स रणे रावणेन निपातितः ॥ 26.18 ॥

hṛteti māṃ yo'dhigatya rāghavāya nivedayet | gṛdhrarājo'pi sa raṇe rāvaṇena nipātitaḥ || 26.18 ||

"He who, learning of my abduction, sought to inform Raghava of it - that very king of vultures was struck down by Ravana in battle."

Shloka 19 (sundara.26.19)

कृतं कर्म महत् तेन मां तथाभ्यवपद्यता । तिष्ठता रावणवधे वृद्धेनापि जटायुषा ॥ 26.19 ॥

kṛtaṃ karma mahat tena māṃ tathābhyavapadyatā | tiṣṭhatā rāvaṇavadhe vṛddhenāpi jaṭāyuṣā || 26.19 ||

"A great deed indeed was done by aged Jatayu, who thus stood his ground to protect me, even engaging Ravana in mortal combat."

Shloka 20 (sundara.26.20)

यदि मामिह जानीयाद् वर्तमानां हि राघवः । अद्य बाणैरभिक्रुद्धः कुर्याल्लोकमराक्षसम् ॥ 26.20 ॥

yadi māmiha jānīyād vartamānāṃ hi rāghavaḥ | adya bāṇairabhikruddhaḥ kuryāllokamarākṣasam || 26.20 ||

"If Raghava truly knew that I am living here, today, enraged, he would with his arrows rid the world of every demon."

Shloka 21 (sundara.26.21)

निर्दहेच्च पुरीं लङ्कां निर्दहेच्च महोदधिम् । रावणस्य च नीचस्य कीर्तिं नाम च नाशयेत् ॥ 26.21 ॥

nirdahecca purīṃ laṅkāṃ nirdahecca mahodadhim | rāvaṇasya ca nīcasya kīrtiṃ nāma ca nāśayet || 26.21 ||

"He would burn down the city of Lanka, he would burn even the great ocean, and he would destroy the very name and fame of vile Ravana."

Shloka 22 (sundara.26.22)

ततो निहतनाथानां राक्षसीनां गृहे गृहे । यथाहमेवं रुदती तथा भूयो न संशयः ॥ 26.22 ॥

tato nihatanāthānāṃ rākṣasīnāṃ gṛhe gṛhe | yathāhamevaṃ rudatī tathā bhūyo na saṃśayaḥ || 26.22 ||

"Then, in every house, the ogresses whose lords lie slain will weep just as I am weeping now - of this there is no doubt at all."

Shloka 23 (sundara.26.23)

अन्विष्य रक्षसां लङ्कां कुर्याद् रामः सलक्ष्मणः । नहि ताभ्यां रिपुर्दृष्टो मुहूर्तमपि जीवति ॥ 26.23 ॥

anviṣya rakṣasāṃ laṅkāṃ kuryād rāmaḥ salakṣmaṇaḥ | nahi tābhyāṃ ripurdṛṣṭo muhūrtamapi jīvati || 26.23 ||

"Rama, together with Lakshmana, will search out and lay waste to the demons' Lanka - for no enemy sighted by those two lives even a moment longer."

Shloka 24 (sundara.26.24)

चिताधूमाकुलपथा गृध्रमण्डलमण्डिता । अचिरेणैव कालेन श्मशानसदृशी भवेत् ॥ 26.24 ॥

citādhūmākulapathā gṛdhramaṇḍalamaṇḍitā | acireṇaiva kālena śmaśānasadṛśī bhavet || 26.24 ||

"Its streets choked with the smoke of funeral pyres, thronged with circling vultures, this city will soon become just like a cremation ground."

Shloka 25 (sundara.26.25)

अचिरेणैव कालेन प्राप्स्याम्येनं मनोरथम् । दुष्प्रस्थानोऽयमाभाति सर्वेषां वो विपर्ययः ॥ 26.25 ॥

acireṇaiva kālena prāpsyāmyenaṃ manoratham | duṣprasthāno'yamābhāti sarveṣāṃ vo viparyayaḥ || 26.25 ||

"In a short time I shall obtain this heart's desire - this ill-starred setting-out of yours foretells ruin for you all."

Shloka 26 (sundara.26.26)

यादृशानि तु दृश्यन्ते लङ्कायामशुभानि तु । अचिरेणैव कालेन भविष्यति हतप्रभा ॥ 26.26 ॥

yādṛśāni tu dṛśyante laṅkāyāmaśubhāni tu | acireṇaiva kālena bhaviṣyati hataprabhā || 26.26 ||

"Such inauspicious signs as are now seen in Lanka show that before long it will lose all its splendor."

Shloka 27 (sundara.26.27)

नूनं लङ्का हते पापे रावणे राक्षसाधिपे । शोषमेष्यति दुर्धर्षा प्रमदा विधवा यथा ॥ 26.27 ॥

nūnaṃ laṅkā hate pāpe rāvaṇe rākṣasādhipe | śoṣameṣyati durdharṣā pramadā vidhavā yathā || 26.27 ||

"Surely, when the sinful Ravana, lord of the demons, is slain, this once-unassailable Lanka will wither away like a widowed woman."

Shloka 28 (sundara.26.28)

पुण्योत्सवसमृद्धा च नष्टभर्त्री सराक्षसा । भविष्यति पुरी लङ्का नष्टभर्त्री यथांगना ॥ 26.28 ॥

puṇyotsavasamṛddhā ca naṣṭabhartrī sarākṣasā | bhaviṣyati purī laṅkā naṣṭabhartrī yathāṃganā || 26.28 ||

"This city of Lanka, now rich with sacred festivals, will become, with its demon-folk bereft of their lord, like a woman bereft of her husband."

Shloka 29 (sundara.26.29)

नूनं राक्षसकन्यानां रुदतीनां गृहे गृहे । श्रोष्यामि नचिरादेव दुःखार्तानामिह ध्वनिम् ॥ 26.29 ॥

nūnaṃ rākṣasakanyānāṃ rudatīnāṃ gṛhe gṛhe | śroṣyāmi nacirādeva duḥkhārtānāmiha dhvanim || 26.29 ||

"Surely, before long, I shall hear here, in house after house, the wailing sound of the demons' daughters, weeping in grief."

Shloka 30 (sundara.26.30)

सान्धकारा हतद्योता हतराक्षसपुंगवा । भविष्यति पुरी लङ्का निर्दग्धा रामसायकैः ॥ 26.30 ॥

sāndhakārā hatadyotā hatarākṣasapuṃgavā | bhaviṣyati purī laṅkā nirdagdhā rāmasāyakaiḥ || 26.30 ||

"Wrapped in darkness, its brightness quenched, its foremost demons slain, this city of Lanka will lie burnt by Rama's arrows."

Shloka 31 (sundara.26.31)

यदि नाम स शूरो मां रामो रक्तान्तलोचनः । जानीयाद् वर्तमानां यां राक्षसस्य निवेशने ॥ 26.31 ॥

yadi nāma sa śūro māṃ rāmo raktāntalocanaḥ | jānīyād vartamānāṃ yāṃ rākṣasasya niveśane || 26.31 ||

"If only that valiant Rama, with eyes reddened at the corners, knew that I am living here, in the very dwelling of this demon."

Shloka 32 (sundara.26.32)

अनेन तु नृशंसेन रावणेनाधमेन मे । समयो यस्तु निर्दिष्टस्तस्य कालोऽयमागतः ॥ 26.32 ॥

anena tu nṛśaṃsena rāvaṇenādhamena me | samayo yastu nirdiṣṭastasya kālo'yamāgataḥ || 26.32 ||

"The time-limit set for me by this cruel and vile Ravana - that very hour has now arrived."

Shloka 33 (sundara.26.33)

स च मे विहितो मृत्युरस्मिन् दुष्टेन वर्तते । अकार्यं ये न जानन्ति नैर्ऋताः पापकारिणः ॥ 26.33 ॥

sa ca me vihito mṛtyurasmin duṣṭena vartate | akāryaṃ ye na jānanti nairṛtāḥ pāpakāriṇaḥ || 26.33 ||

"And the death allotted to me now rests in the hands of this wicked one; these sinful demons know nothing of what should not be done."

Shloka 34 (sundara.26.34)

अधर्मात् तु महोत्पातो भविष्यति हि साम्प्रतम् । नैते धर्मं विजानन्ति राक्षसाः पिशिताशनाः ॥ 26.34 ॥

adharmāt tu mahotpāto bhaviṣyati hi sāmpratam | naite dharmaṃ vijānanti rākṣasāḥ piśitāśanāḥ || 26.34 ||

"Because of this very unrighteousness, a great calamity is now surely bound to occur - these flesh-eating demons understand nothing of righteousness."

Shloka 35 (sundara.26.35)

ध्रुवं मां प्रातराशार्थं राक्षसः कल्पयिष्यति । साहं कथं करिष्यामि तं विना प्रियदर्शनम् ॥ 26.35 ॥

dhruvaṃ māṃ prātarāśārthaṃ rākṣasaḥ kalpayiṣyati | sāhaṃ kathaṃ kariṣyāmi taṃ vinā priyadarśanam || 26.35 ||

"Surely this demon will prepare me for his morning meal. What then shall I, without the sight of my beloved, do?"

Shloka 36 (sundara.26.36)

रामं रक्तान्तनयनमपश्यन्ती सुदुःखिता । क्षिप्रं वैवस्वतं देवं पश्येयं पतिना विना ॥ 26.36 ॥

rāmaṃ raktāntanayanamapaśyantī suduḥkhitā | kṣipraṃ vaivasvataṃ devaṃ paśyeyaṃ patinā vinā || 26.36 ||

"Not seeing red-eyed Rama, deeply grieving, I would rather soon behold the god Vaivasvata, without my husband."

Shloka 37 (sundara.26.37)

नाजानाज्जीवतीं रामः स मां भरतपूर्वजः । जानन्तौ तु न कुर्यातां नोर्व्यां हि परिमार्गणम् ॥ 26.37 ॥

nājānājjīvatīṃ rāmaḥ sa māṃ bharatapūrvajaḥ | jānantau tu na kuryātāṃ norvyāṃ hi parimārgaṇam || 26.37 ||

"Perhaps Rama, elder brother of Bharata, does not know that I still live; for if those two knew, surely they would not fail to search this earth for me."

Shloka 38 (sundara.26.38)

नूनं ममैव शोकेन स वीरो लक्ष्मणाग्रजः । देवलोकमितो यातस्त्यक्त्वा देहं महीतले ॥ 26.38 ॥

nūnaṃ mamaiva śokena sa vīro lakṣmaṇāgrajaḥ | devalokamito yātastyaktvā dehaṃ mahītale || 26.38 ||

"Surely that heroic elder brother of Lakshmana, out of grief for me alone, has left his body on this earth and gone hence to the world of the gods."

Shloka 39 (sundara.26.39)

धन्या देवाः सगन्धर्वाः सिद्धाश्च परमर्षयः । मम पश्यन्ति ये वीरं रामं राजीवलोचनम् ॥ 26.39 ॥

dhanyā devāḥ sagandharvāḥ siddhāśca paramarṣayaḥ | mama paśyanti ye vīraṃ rāmaṃ rājīvalocanam || 26.39 ||

"Blessed indeed are the gods, the gandharvas, the siddhas and the great sages who now behold my lotus-eyed hero Rama."

Shloka 40 (sundara.26.40)

अथवा नहि तस्यार्थो धर्मकामस्य धीमतः । मया रामस्य राजर्षेर्भार्यया परमात्मनः ॥ 26.40 ॥

athavā nahi tasyārtho dharmakāmasya dhīmataḥ | mayā rāmasya rājarṣerbhāryayā paramātmanaḥ || 26.40 ||

"Or perhaps that wise Rama, devoted to righteousness, the royal sage of supreme spirit, has no more need of me as his wife."

Shloka 41 (sundara.26.41)

दृश्यमाने भवेत् प्रीतिः सौहृदं नास्त्यदृश्यतः । नाशयन्ति कृतघ्नास्तु न रामो नाशयिष्यति ॥ 26.41 ॥

dṛśyamāne bhavet prītiḥ sauhṛdaṃ nāstyadṛśyataḥ | nāśayanti kṛtaghnāstu na rāmo nāśayiṣyati || 26.41 ||

"Affection endures only while one is seen; there is no bond of love for one unseen. Yet only the ungrateful forget - Rama will never forget."

Shloka 42 (sundara.26.42)

किं वा मय्यगुणाः केचित् किं वा भाग्यक्षयो हि मे । या हि सीता वरार्हेण हीना रामेण भामिनी ॥ 26.42 ॥

kiṃ vā mayyaguṇāḥ kecit kiṃ vā bhāgyakṣayo hi me | yā hi sītā varārheṇa hīnā rāmeṇa bhāminī || 26.42 ||

"Are there then some faults in me, or is it simply that my fortune has run out, that I, Sita, a woman worthy of the best, now find myself bereft of Rama?"

Shloka 43 (sundara.26.43)

श्रेयो मे जीवितान्मर्तुं विहीनाया महात्मना । रामादक्लिष्टचारित्राच्छूराच्छत्रुनिबर्हणात् ॥ 26.43 ॥

śreyo me jīvitānmartuṃ vihīnāyā mahātmanā | rāmādakliṣṭacāritrācchūrācchatrunibarhaṇāt || 26.43 ||

"Better for me to die than to live on bereft of that great-souled Rama, of unsullied conduct, valiant, destroyer of foes."

Shloka 44 (sundara.26.44)

अथवा न्यस्तशस्त्रौ तौ वने मूलफलाशनौ । भ्रातरौ हि नरश्रेष्ठौ चरन्तौ वनगोचरौ ॥ 26.44 ॥

athavā nyastaśastrau tau vane mūlaphalāśanau | bhrātarau hi naraśreṣṭhau carantau vanagocarau || 26.44 ||

"Or perhaps those two brothers, foremost among men, having laid down their weapons, now wander the forest as forest-dwellers, living on roots and fruit."

Shloka 45 (sundara.26.45)

अथवा राक्षसेन्द्रेण रावणेन दुरात्मना । छद्मना घातितौ शूरौ भ्रातरौ रामलक्ष्मणौ ॥ 26.45 ॥

athavā rākṣasendreṇa rāvaṇena durātmanā | chadmanā ghātitau śūrau bhrātarau rāmalakṣmaṇau || 26.45 ||

"Or perhaps those valiant brothers, Rama and Lakshmana, have been slain by treachery at the hands of the evil-souled lord of demons, Ravana."

Shloka 46 (sundara.26.46)

साहमेवंविधे काले मर्तुमिच्छामि सर्वतः । न च मे विहितो मृत्युरस्मिन् दुःखेऽतिवर्तति ॥ 26.46 ॥

sāhamevaṃvidhe kāle martumicchāmi sarvataḥ | na ca me vihito mṛtyurasmin duḥkhe'tivartati || 26.46 ||

"In such circumstances, I now wish, by every means, to die - yet even in this grief the death allotted to me does not come."

Shloka 47 (sundara.26.47)

धन्याः खलु महात्मानो मुनयः सत्यसम्मताः । जितात्मानो महाभागा येषां न स्तः प्रियाप्रिये ॥ 26.47 ॥

dhanyāḥ khalu mahātmāno munayaḥ satyasammatāḥ | jitātmāno mahābhāgā yeṣāṃ na staḥ priyāpriye || 26.47 ||

"Blessed indeed are those great-souled sages, honored for their truthfulness, who have conquered the self, most fortunate, for whom pleasure and pain no longer exist."

Shloka 48 (sundara.26.48)

प्रियान्न सम्भवेद् दुःखमप्रियादधिकं भवेत् । ताभ्यां हि ते वियुज्यन्ते नमस्तेषां महात्मनाम् ॥ 26.48 ॥

priyānna sambhaved duḥkhamapriyādadhikaṃ bhavet | tābhyāṃ hi te viyujyante namasteṣāṃ mahātmanām || 26.48 ||

"For them, no sorrow arises from what is dear, nor greater fear from what is not; for they stand free of both - homage to such great souls."

Shloka 49 (sundara.26.49)

साहं त्यक्ता प्रियेणैव रामेण विदितात्मना । प्राणांस्त्यक्ष्यामि पापस्य रावणस्य गता वशम् ॥ 26.49 ॥

sāhaṃ tyaktā priyeṇaiva rāmeṇa viditātmanā | prāṇāṃstyakṣyāmi pāpasya rāvaṇasya gatā vaśam || 26.49 ||

"So I, forsaken even by my own beloved, the wise-souled Rama, and fallen into the power of the sinful Ravana, shall now give up my life."
