Sarga 26All sargasSarga 28

Shloka 1 (sundara.27.1)

ityuktāḥ sītayā ghoraṃ rākṣasyaḥ krodhamūrcchitāḥ | kāścijjagmustadākhyātuṃ rāvaṇasya durātmanaḥ || 27.1 ||

Addressed thus terribly by Sita, the ogresses swooned with rage; some of them went to report this to the evil-minded Ravana.

Shloka 2 (sundara.27.2)

tataḥ sītāmupāgamya rākṣasyo bhīmadarśanāḥ | punaḥ paruṣamekārthamanarthārthamathābruvan || 27.2 ||

Then the fearsome-looking ogresses came near Sita again and spoke harsh words, all to one evil purpose.

Shloka 3 (sundara.27.3)

adyedānīṃ tavānārye sīte pāpaviniścaye | rākṣasyo bhakṣayiṣyanti māṃsametad yathāsukham || 27.3 ||

"This very moment, O ignoble Sita, O one of sinful resolve, the ogresses shall devour this flesh of yours at their pleasure."

Shloka 4 (sundara.27.4)

sītāṃ tābhiranāryābhirdṛṣṭvā saṃtarjitāṃ tadā | rākṣasī trijaṭā vṛddhā prabuddhā vākyamabravīt || 27.4 ||

Then, seeing Sita thus threatened by those ignoble ones, the aged ogress Trijata, who had just awoken, spoke these words.

Shloka 5 (sundara.27.5)

ātmānaṃ khādatānāryā na sītāṃ bhakṣayiṣyatha | janakasya sutāmiṣṭāṃ snuṣāṃ daśarathasya ca || 27.5 ||

"O ignoble ones, devour your own selves - you shall not eat Sita, the beloved daughter of Janaka and dear daughter-in-law of Dasaratha."

Shloka 6 (sundara.27.6)

svapno hyadya mayā dṛṣṭo dāruṇo romaharṣaṇaḥ | rākṣasānāmabhāvāya bharturasyā bhavāya ca || 27.6 ||

"For I have just now seen a dreadful, hair-raising dream - one foretelling the destruction of the demons and the triumph of her husband."

Shloka 7 (sundara.27.7)

evamuktāstrijaṭayā rākṣasyaḥ krodhamūrcchitāḥ | sarvā evābruvan bhītāstrijaṭāṃ tāmidaṃ vacaḥ || 27.7 ||

Thus addressed by Trijata, the ogresses, who had swooned with rage, all now grew afraid and said this to Trijata.

Shloka 8 (sundara.27.8)

kathayasva tvayā dṛṣṭaḥ svapno'yaṃ kīdṛśo niśi | tāsāṃ śrutvā tu vacanaṃ rākṣasīnāṃ mukhodgatam || 27.8 ||

"Tell us of what kind was this dream you saw in the night." Hearing these words come from the mouths of those ogresses,

Shloka 9 (sundara.27.9)

uvāca vacanaṃ kāle trijaṭā svapnasaṃśritam | gajadantamayīṃ divyāṃ śibikāmantarikṣagām || 27.9 ||

Trijata then spoke of the dream: "A divine palanquin made of ivory, moving through the sky,

Shloka 10 (sundara.27.10)

yuktāṃ vājisahasreṇa svayamāsthāya rāghavaḥ | śuklamālyāmbaradharo lakṣmaṇena samāgataḥ || 27.10 ||

yoked to a thousand horses - Raghava himself, clad in white garlands and garments, mounted upon it and arrived there together with Lakshmana."

Shloka 11 (sundara.27.11)

svapne cādya mayā dṛṣṭā sītā śuklāmbarāvṛtā | sāgareṇa parikṣiptaṃ śvetaparvatamāsthitā || 27.11 ||

"And in that same dream I saw Sita, clad in white garments, seated upon a white mountain girded by the ocean."

Shloka 12 (sundara.27.12)

rāmeṇa saṃgatā sītā bhāskareṇa prabhā yathā | rāghavaśca punardṛṣṭaścaturdantaṃ mahāgajam || 27.12 ||

"Sita was united with Rama as light is united with the sun. And I saw Raghava again, mounted upon a great four-tusked elephant,

Shloka 13 (sundara.27.13)

ārūḍhaḥ śailasaṃkāśaṃ cakāsa sahalakṣmaṇaḥ | tatastu sūryasaṃkāśau dīpyamānau svatejasā || 27.13 ||

resembling a mountain, and shining brightly, with Lakshmana beside him. Then those two, radiant with their own splendor like the sun,

Shloka 14 (sundara.27.14)

śuklamālyāmbaradharau jānakīṃ paryupasthitau | tatastasya nagasyāgre hyākāśasthasya dantinaḥ || 27.14 ||

clad in white garlands and garments, came near Janaki. Then, upon the head of that elephant standing in the sky,

Shloka 15 (sundara.27.15)

bhartrā parigṛhītasya jānakī skandhamāśritā | bharturaṅkāt samutpatya tataḥ kamalalocanā || 27.15 ||

held fast by her husband, Janaki rested upon its shoulder. Then, the lotus-eyed one, rising up from her husband's lap,

Shloka 16 (sundara.27.16)

candrasūryau mayā dṛṣṭā pāṇibhyāṃ parimārjatī | tatastābhyāṃ kumārābhyāmāsthitaḥ sa gajottamaḥ | sītayā ca viśālākṣyā laṅkāyā upari sthitaḥ || 27.16 ||

I saw her touching the moon and sun with her hands. Then that finest of elephants, mounted by those two princes and by the wide-eyed Sita, stood above Lanka.

Shloka 17 (sundara.27.17)

pāṇḍurarṣabhayuktena rathenāṣṭayujā svayam | ihopayātaḥ kākutsthaḥ sītayā saha bhāryayā || 27.17 ||

"Then Kakutstha himself, in a chariot yoked with eight white bulls, came here together with his wife Sita."

Shloka 18 (sundara.27.18)

śuklamālyāmbaradharo lakṣmaṇena sahāgataḥ | tato'nyatra mayā dṛṣṭo rāmaḥ satyaparākramaḥ || 27.18 ||

"Clad in white garlands and garments, he came together with Lakshmana. Then, elsewhere, I saw Rama of true valor,

Shloka 19 (sundara.27.19)

lakṣmaṇena saha bhrātrā sītayā saha vīryavān | āruhya puṣpakaṃ divyaṃ vimānaṃ sūryasaṃnibham || 27.19 ||

the valorous one, together with his brother Lakshmana and with Sita, mounted upon the divine Pushpaka aerial car, resplendent as the sun,

Shloka 20 (sundara.27.20)

uttarāṃ diśamālocya prasthitaḥ puruṣottamaḥ | evaṃ svapne mayā dṛṣṭo rāmo viṣṇuparākramaḥ || 27.20 ||

gazing toward the northern direction and setting forth, that most excellent of men. Thus, in the dream, I saw Rama, mighty as Vishnu,

Shloka 21 (sundara.27.21)

lakṣmaṇena saha bhrātrā sītayā saha bhāryayā | na hi rāmo mahātejāḥ śakyo jetuṃ surāsuraiḥ || 27.21 ||

together with his brother Lakshmana and his wife Sita. Indeed, that greatly radiant Rama cannot be conquered by gods or demons,

Shloka 22 (sundara.27.22)

rākṣasairvāpi cānyairvā svargaḥ pāpajanairiva | rāvaṇaśca mayā dṛṣṭo muṇḍastailasamukṣitaḥ || 27.22 ||

nor by demons, nor by any others - just as heaven cannot be won by sinners. And I saw Ravana, his head shaven, drenched in oil,

Shloka 23 (sundara.27.23)

raktavāsāḥ pibanmattaḥ karavīrakṛtasrajaḥ | vimānāt puṣpakādadya rāvaṇaḥ patitaḥ kṣitau || 27.23 ||

"clad in red garments, drunk from drinking, garlanded with oleander flowers - this very day Ravana fell down to the earth from the Pushpaka aerial car."

Shloka 24 (sundara.27.24)

kṛṣyamāṇaḥ striyā muṇḍo dṛṣṭaḥ kṛṣṇāmbaraḥ punaḥ | rathena kharayuktena raktamālyānulepanaḥ || 27.24 ||

Again I saw him, his head shaven, clad in black garments, being dragged by a woman, wearing red garlands and red unguents, in a chariot yoked with donkeys,

Shloka 25 (sundara.27.25)

pibaṃstailaṃ hasannṛtyan bhrāntacittākulendriyaḥ | gardabhena yayau śīghraṃ dakṣiṇāṃ diśamāsthitaḥ || 27.25 ||

drinking oil, laughing, dancing, his mind deranged and senses in disorder, hastening upon a donkey toward the southern direction.

Shloka 26 (sundara.27.26)

punareva mayā dṛṣṭo rāvaṇo rākṣaseśvaraḥ | patito'vākśirā bhūmau gardabhād bhayamohitaḥ || 27.26 ||

Again I saw that lord of demons, Ravana, stupefied with fear, fallen head-down upon the ground from that donkey.

Shloka 27 (sundara.27.27)

sahasotthāya sambhrānto bhayārto madavihvalaḥ | unmattarūpo digvāsā durvākyaṃ pralapan bahu || 27.27 ||

Rising up suddenly, bewildered, stricken with fear, overcome by intoxication, naked and looking like a madman, babbling much foul speech,

Shloka 28 (sundara.27.28)

durgandhaṃ duḥsahaṃ ghoraṃ timiraṃ narakopamam | malapaṅkaṃ praviśyāśu magnastatra sa rāvaṇaḥ || 27.28 ||

that Ravana quickly plunged into a filthy mire, foul-smelling, unbearable, dreadful and dark as hell, and sank in it.

Shloka 29 (sundara.27.29)

prasthito dakṣiṇāmāśāṃ praviṣṭo'kardamaṃ hradam | kaṇṭhe baddhvā daśagrīvaṃ pramadā raktavāsinī || 27.29 ||

Having set out toward the southern quarter, he entered a slimy pool; and a woman clad in red, having bound the ten-necked one by the throat,

Shloka 30 (sundara.27.30)

kālī kardamaliptāṃgī diśaṃ yāmyāṃ prakarṣati | evaṃ tatra mayā dṛṣṭaḥ kumbhakarṇo mahābalaḥ || 27.30 ||

black-hued, her body smeared with mud, was dragging him toward the southern direction. There too I saw mighty Kumbhakarna, in the same plight,

Shloka 31 (sundara.27.31)

rāvaṇasya sutāḥ sarve muṇḍāstailasamukṣitāḥ | varāheṇa daśagrīvaḥ śiśumāreṇa cendrajit || 27.31 ||

and all of Ravana's sons, their heads shaven, drenched with oil - the ten-necked one being carried off by a boar, and Indrajit by a porpoise,

Shloka 32 (sundara.27.32)

uṣṭreṇa kumbhakarṇaśca prayāto dakṣiṇāṃ diśam | ekastatra mayā dṛṣṭaḥ śvetacchatro vibhīṣaṇaḥ || 27.32 ||

and Kumbhakarna carried off by a camel, all setting out toward the southern direction. Among them all, only Vibhishana I saw there beneath a white parasol,

Shloka 33 (sundara.27.33)

śuklamālyāmbaradharaḥ śuklagandhānulepanaḥ | śaṅkhadundubhinirghoṣairnṛttagītairalaṃkṛtaḥ || 27.33 ||

clad in white garlands and garments, anointed with white sandal paste, honored with the blare of conches and kettledrums, with dance and song,

Shloka 34 (sundara.27.34)

āruhya śailasaṃkāśaṃ meghastanitaniḥsvanam | caturdantaṃ gajaṃ divyamāste tatra vibhīṣaṇaḥ || 27.34 ||

mounted upon a divine four-tusked elephant, huge as a mountain, rumbling like thunder-clouds - there Vibhishana remained,

Shloka 35 (sundara.27.35)

caturbhiḥ sacivaiḥ sārdhaṃ vaihāyasamupasthitaḥ || 27.35 ||

together with his four ministers, risen up into the sky.

Shloka 36 (sundara.27.36)

samājaśca mahān vṛtto gītavāditraniḥsvanaḥ | pibatāṃ raktamālyānāṃ rakṣasāṃ raktavāsasām || 27.36 ||

And there took place a great gathering, resounding with song and music, of demons clad in red garments and red garlands, drinking there;

Shloka 37 (sundara.27.37)

laṅkā ceyaṃ purī ramyā savājirathakuñjarā | sāgare patitā dṛṣṭā bhagnagopuratoraṇā || 27.37 ||

and this lovely city of Lanka, together with its horses, chariots and elephants, I saw fallen into the ocean, its gate-towers and arches shattered.

Shloka 38 (sundara.27.38)

laṅkā dṛṣṭā mayā svapne rāvaṇenābhirakṣitā | dagdhā rāmasya dūtena vānareṇa tarasvinā || 27.38 ||

In my dream I saw Lanka, though guarded by Ravana, set ablaze by a swift monkey, the messenger of Rama.

Shloka 39 (sundara.27.39)

pītvā tailaṃ pramattāśca prahasantyo mahāsvanāḥ | laṅkāyāṃ bhasmarūkṣāyāṃ sarvā rākṣasayoṣitaḥ || 27.39 ||

In that Lanka now grey with ashes, all the demon-women, having drunk oil and grown intoxicated, were laughing aloud with great noise,

Shloka 40 (sundara.27.40)

kumbhakarṇādayaśceme sarve rākṣasapuṃgavāḥ | raktaṃ nivasanaṃ gṛhya praviṣṭā gomayahradam || 27.40 ||

and all these foremost demons headed by Kumbhakarna, taking up red garments, entered a pool of cow-dung.

Shloka 41 (sundara.27.41)

apagacchata paśyadhvaṃ sītāmāpnoti rāghavaḥ | ghātayet paramāmarṣī yuṣmān sārdhaṃ hi rākṣasaiḥ || 27.41 ||

'Go away! Behold, Raghava is about to win back Sita! In great fury he will slay you all, together with the other demons.'

Shloka 42 (sundara.27.42)

priyāṃ bahumatāṃ bhāryāṃ vanavāsamanuvratām | bhartsitāṃ tarjitāṃ vāpi nānumaṃsyati rāghavaḥ || 27.42 ||

'Raghava will never forgive the threatening or the tormenting of his dear and highly cherished wife, who followed him faithfully into the forest.'

Shloka 43 (sundara.27.43)

tadalaṃ krūravākyaiśca sāntvamevābhidhīyatām | abhiyācāma vaidehīmetaddhi mama rocate || 27.43 ||

'So enough of these cruel words - let only gentle words be spoken. Let us instead entreat Vaidehi - this is what pleases me.'

Shloka 44 (sundara.27.44)

yasyā hyevaṃvidhaḥ svapno duḥkhitāyāḥ pradṛśyate | sā duḥkhairbahubhirmuktā priyaṃ prāpnotyanuttamam || 27.44 ||

'For any sorrowing woman who sees such a dream as this, she is soon released from her many sorrows and attains supreme joy.'

Shloka 45 (sundara.27.45)

bhartsitāmapi yācadhvaṃ rākṣasyaḥ kiṃ vivakṣayā | rāghavāddhi bhayaṃ ghoraṃ rākṣasānāmupasthitam || 27.45 ||

'O ogresses, entreat her even after having threatened her - what use is further talk? A dreadful fear from Raghava now hangs over all the demons.'

Shloka 46 (sundara.27.46)

praṇipātaprasannā hi maithilī janakātmajā | alameṣā paritrātuṃ rākṣasyo mahato bhayāt || 27.46 ||

'For Maithili, the daughter of Janaka, is easily won over by humble submission - she alone is able to save you, O ogresses, from this great peril.'

Shloka 47 (sundara.27.47)

api cāsyā viśālākṣyā na kiṃcidupalakṣaye | virūpamapi cāṃgeṣu susūkṣmamapi lakṣaṇam || 27.47 ||

'Moreover, in this wide-eyed lady I can perceive not even the slightest inauspicious mark upon her limbs, however subtle.'

Shloka 48 (sundara.27.48)

chāyāvaiguṇyamātraṃ tu śaṅke duḥkhamupasthitam | aduḥkhārhāmimāṃ devīṃ vaihāyasamupasthitām || 27.48 ||

'Only a slight dulling of her complexion do I notice, which I believe is due to the grief that has come upon this princess, who deserves no sorrow at all - and who in my dream stood raised into the sky.'

Shloka 49 (sundara.27.49)

arthasiddhiṃ tu vaidehyāḥ paśyāmyahamupasthitām | rākṣasendravināśaṃ ca vijayaṃ rāghavasya ca || 27.49 ||

'I see the fulfilment of Vaidehi's purpose now close at hand, and likewise the destruction of the demon-king and the victory of Raghava.'

Shloka 50 (sundara.27.50)

nimittabhūtametat tu śrotumasyā mahat priyam | dṛśyate ca sphuraccakṣuḥ padmapatramivāyatam || 27.50 ||

'This is itself an omen foretelling great joy for her, soon to be heard - and see, her long eye, like a lotus petal, is now visibly throbbing.'

Shloka 51 (sundara.27.51)

īṣaddhi hṛṣito vāsyā dakṣiṇāyā hyadakṣiṇaḥ | akasmādeva vaidehyā bāhurekaḥ prakampate || 27.51 ||

'And though she stands facing right, her left arm alone, all unbidden, has suddenly begun trembling with slight exhilaration.'

Shloka 52 (sundara.27.52)

kareṇuhastapratimaḥ savyaścoruranuttamaḥ | vepan kathayatīvāsyā rāghavaṃ purataḥ sthitam || 27.52 ||

'And her incomparable left thigh, resembling an elephant's trunk, trembles as though telling us that Raghava himself now stands before her.'

Shloka 53 (sundara.27.53)

pakṣī ca śākhānilayaṃ praviṣṭaḥ punaḥ punaścottamasāntvavādī | susvāgatāṃ vācamudīrayāṇaḥ punaḥ punaścodayatīva hṛṣṭaḥ || 27.53 ||
