Sita's Joy and Hanuman's Assurance

Shloka 1 (sundara.36.1)

भूय एव महातेजा हनूमान् पवनात्मजः। अब्रवीत् प्रश्रितं वाक्यं सीताप्रत्ययकारणात् ॥ 36.1 ॥

bhūya eva mahātejā hanūmān pavanātmajaḥ| abravīt praśritaṃ vākyaṃ sītāpratyayakāraṇāt || 36.1 ||

Once more the greatly radiant Hanuman, son of the wind-god, spoke humbly, in order to win Sita's confidence.

Shloka 2 (sundara.36.2)

वानरोऽहं महाभागे दूतो रामस्य धीमतः। रामनामाङ्कितं चेदं पश्य देव्यङ्गुलीयकम् ॥ 36.2 ॥

vānaro'haṃ mahābhāge dūto rāmasya dhīmataḥ| rāmanāmāṅkitaṃ cedaṃ paśya devyaṅgulīyakam || 36.2 ||

"I am a monkey, O illustrious lady, a messenger of the wise Rama. O princess, look at this ring too, marked with Rama's name."

Shloka 3 (sundara.36.3)

प्रत्ययार्थं तवानीतं तेन दत्तं महात्मना। समाश्वसिहि भद्रं ते क्षीणदुःखफला ह्यसि ॥ 36.3 ॥

pratyayārthaṃ tavānītaṃ tena dattaṃ mahātmanā| samāśvasihi bhadraṃ te kṣīṇaduḥkhaphalā hyasi || 36.3 ||

"It was given by that great soul to win your confidence, and I have brought it for you. Take comfort; may you be blessed — you are now free of the fruit of grief."

Shloka 4 (sundara.36.4)

गृहीत्वा प्रेक्षमाणा सा भर्तुः करविभूषितम्। भर्तारमिव सम्प्राप्तं जानकी मुदिताभवत् ॥ 36.4 ॥

gṛhītvā prekṣamāṇā sā bhartuḥ karavibhūṣitam| bhartāramiva samprāptaṃ jānakī muditābhavat || 36.4 ||

Taking that ornament adorned by her husband's hand and gazing at it, Janaki became joyful, as though she had reached her husband himself.

Shloka 5 (sundara.36.5)

चारु तद् वदनं तस्यास्ताम्रशुक्लायतेक्षणम्। बभूव हर्षोदग्रं च राहुमुक्त इवोडुराट् ॥ 36.5 ॥

cāru tad vadanaṃ tasyāstāmraśuklāyatekṣaṇam| babhūva harṣodagraṃ ca rāhumukta ivoḍurāṭ || 36.5 ||

That lovely face of hers, with its wide, red-and-white eyes, shone like the moon, lord of the stars, freed from Rahu's grasp.

Shloka 6 (sundara.36.6)

ततः सा ह्रीमती बाला भर्तुः संदेशहर्षिता। परितुष्टा प्रियं कृत्वा प्रशशंस महाकपिम् ॥ 36.6 ॥

tataḥ sā hrīmatī bālā bhartuḥ saṃdeśaharṣitā| parituṣṭā priyaṃ kṛtvā praśaśaṃsa mahākapim || 36.6 ||

Then that bashful young woman, gladdened by her husband's message, deeply satisfied, spoke pleasing words and praised the great monkey.

Shloka 7 (sundara.36.7)

विक्रान्तस्त्वं समर्थस्त्वं प्राज्ञस्त्वं वानरोत्तम। येनेदं राक्षसपदं त्वयैकेन प्रधर्षितम् ॥ 36.7 ॥

vikrāntastvaṃ samarthastvaṃ prājñastvaṃ vānarottama| yenedaṃ rākṣasapadaṃ tvayaikena pradharṣitam || 36.7 ||

"You are valiant, you are capable, you are wise, O best of monkeys, in that you alone have overrun this realm of demons."

Shloka 8 (sundara.36.8)

शतयोजनविस्तीर्णः सागरो मकरालयः। विक्रमश्लाघनीयेन क्रमता गोष्पदीकृतः ॥ 36.8 ॥

śatayojanavistīrṇaḥ sāgaro makarālayaḥ| vikramaślāghanīyena kramatā goṣpadīkṛtaḥ || 36.8 ||

"The ocean, a hundred yojanas wide and the abode of crocodiles, was made by you, praiseworthy in valour, into a mere cow's hoofprint as you strode across it."

Shloka 9 (sundara.36.9)

नहि त्वां प्राकृतं मन्ये वानरं वानरर्षभ। यस्य ते नास्ति संत्रासो रावणादपि सम्भ्रमः ॥ 36.9 ॥

nahi tvāṃ prākṛtaṃ manye vānaraṃ vānararṣabha| yasya te nāsti saṃtrāso rāvaṇādapi sambhramaḥ || 36.9 ||

"I do not think you an ordinary monkey, O bull among monkeys, for you have neither fear of Ravana nor even confusion before him."

Shloka 10 (sundara.36.10)

अर्हसे च कपिश्रेष्ठ मया समभिभाषितुम्। यद्यसि प्रेषितस्तेन रामेण विदितात्मना ॥ 36.10 ॥

arhase ca kapiśreṣṭha mayā samabhibhāṣitum| yadyasi preṣitastena rāmeṇa viditātmanā || 36.10 ||

"You deserve to converse with me, O best of monkeys, if indeed you were sent by that Rama who truly knows his own worth."

Shloka 11 (sundara.36.11)

प्रेषयिष्यति दुर्धर्षो रामो नह्यपरीक्षितम्। पराक्रममविज्ञाय मत्सकाशं विशेषतः ॥ 36.11 ॥

preṣayiṣyati durdharṣo rāmo nahyaparīkṣitam| parākramamavijñāya matsakāśaṃ viśeṣataḥ || 36.11 ||

"The indomitable Rama surely would not send anyone untested, without first knowing his valour, especially to come before me."

Shloka 12 (sundara.36.12)

दिष्ट्या च कुशली रामो धर्मात्मा सत्यसंगरः। लक्ष्मणश्च महातेजाः सुमित्रानन्दवर्धनः ॥ 36.12 ॥

diṣṭyā ca kuśalī rāmo dharmātmā satyasaṃgaraḥ| lakṣmaṇaśca mahātejāḥ sumitrānandavardhanaḥ || 36.12 ||

"By good fortune Rama is well, that righteous soul devoted to duty; and Lakshmana too, of great splendour, who gladdens Sumitra's heart."

Shloka 13 (sundara.36.13)

कुशली यदि काकुत्स्थः किं न सागरमेखलाम्। महीं दहति कोपेन युगान्ताग्निरिवोत्थितः ॥ 36.13 ॥

kuśalī yadi kākutsthaḥ kiṃ na sāgaramekhalām| mahīṃ dahati kopena yugāntāgnirivotthitaḥ || 36.13 ||

"If Kakutstha is truly well, why then does he not, in his anger, burn this ocean-girdled earth, like the fire that rises at the end of an age?"

Shloka 14 (sundara.36.14)

अथवा शक्तिमन्तौ तौ सुराणामपि निग्रहे। ममैव तु न दुःखानामस्ति मन्ये विपर्ययः ॥ 36.14 ॥

athavā śaktimantau tau surāṇāmapi nigrahe| mamaiva tu na duḥkhānāmasti manye viparyayaḥ || 36.14 ||

"Or perhaps those two are indeed capable, able even to restrain the gods themselves; yet I think there is no end at all to my own sorrows."

Shloka 15 (sundara.36.15)

कच्चिन्न व्यथते रामः कच्चिन्न परितप्यते। उत्तराणि च कार्याणि कुरुते पुरुषोत्तमः ॥ 36.15 ॥

kaccinna vyathate rāmaḥ kaccinna paritapyate| uttarāṇi ca kāryāṇi kurute puruṣottamaḥ || 36.15 ||

"Does Rama suffer? Is he not tormented? Is that best of men, even now, doing what remains to be done?"

Shloka 16 (sundara.36.16)

कच्चिन्न दीनः सम्भ्रान्तः कार्येषु च न मुह्यति। कच्चित् पुरुषकार्याणि कुरुते नृपतेः सुतः ॥ 36.16 ॥

kaccinna dīnaḥ sambhrāntaḥ kāryeṣu ca na muhyati| kaccit puruṣakāryāṇi kurute nṛpateḥ sutaḥ || 36.16 ||

"Is the king's son not wretched, not bewildered, not confounded in his tasks? I hope the prince is doing all that a man must do."

Shloka 17 (sundara.36.17)

द्विविधं त्रिविधोपायमुपायमपि सेवते। विजिगीषुः सुहृत् कच्चिन्मित्रेषु च परंतपः ॥ 36.17 ॥

dvividhaṃ trividhopāyamupāyamapi sevate| vijigīṣuḥ suhṛt kaccinmitreṣu ca paraṃtapaḥ || 36.17 ||

"Does that scorcher of foes, wishing victory, resort to the twofold and threefold means, and remain kind toward his friends?"

Shloka 18 (sundara.36.18)

कच्चिन्मित्राणि लभतेऽमित्रैश्चाप्यभिगम्यते। कच्चित् कल्याणमित्रश्च मित्रैश्चापि पुरस्कृतः ॥ 36.18 ॥

kaccinmitrāṇi labhate'mitraiścāpyabhigamyate| kaccit kalyāṇamitraśca mitraiścāpi puraskṛtaḥ || 36.18 ||

"Does he gain friends, and is he approached by friends in turn? I hope he has good friends and is honoured by them as well."

Shloka 19 (sundara.36.19)

कच्चिदाशास्ति देवानां प्रसादं पार्थिवात्मजः। कच्चित् पुरुषकारं च दैवं च प्रतिपद्यते ॥ 36.19 ॥

kaccidāśāsti devānāṃ prasādaṃ pārthivātmajaḥ| kaccit puruṣakāraṃ ca daivaṃ ca pratipadyate || 36.19 ||

"Does the king's son seek the gods' favour? Does he give due place both to human effort and to fate?"

Shloka 20 (sundara.36.20)

कच्चिन्न विगतस्नेहो विवासान्मयि राघवः। कच्चिन्मां व्यसनादस्मान्मोक्षयिष्यति राघवः ॥ 36.20 ॥

kaccinna vigatasneho vivāsānmayi rāghavaḥ| kaccinmāṃ vyasanādasmānmokṣayiṣyati rāghavaḥ || 36.20 ||

"O monkey, has Raghava's love for me not faded through this separation? Will he indeed free me from this calamity?"

Shloka 21 (sundara.36.21)

सुखानामुचितो नित्यमसुखानामनूचितः। दुःखमुत्तरमासाद्य कच्चिद् रामो न सीदति ॥ 36.21 ॥

sukhānāmucito nityamasukhānāmanūcitaḥ| duḥkhamuttaramāsādya kaccid rāmo na sīdati || 36.21 ||

"Rama, ever accustomed to happiness and unused to sorrow, having met with this great pain — is he not sinking under it?"

Shloka 22 (sundara.36.22)

कौसल्यायास्तथा कच्चित् सुमित्रायास्तथैव च। अभीक्ष्णं श्रूयते कच्चित् कुशलं भरतस्य च ॥ 36.22 ॥

kausalyāyāstathā kaccit sumitrāyāstathaiva ca| abhīkṣṇaṃ śrūyate kaccit kuśalaṃ bharatasya ca || 36.22 ||

"Do you constantly hear news of the welfare of Kausalya, and likewise of Sumitra, and of Bharata's well-being?"

Shloka 23 (sundara.36.23)

मन्निमित्तेन मानार्हः कच्चिच्छोकेन राघवः। कच्चिन्नान्यमना रामः कच्चिन्मां तारयिष्यति ॥ 36.23 ॥

mannimittena mānārhaḥ kaccicchokena rāghavaḥ| kaccinnānyamanā rāmaḥ kaccinmāṃ tārayiṣyati || 36.23 ||

"Does honourable Raghava grieve on my account? Is Rama's mind not fixed elsewhere? Will he indeed rescue me?"

Shloka 24 (sundara.36.24)

कच्चिदक्षौहिणीं भीमां भरतो भ्रातृवत्सलः। ध्वजिनीं मन्त्रिभिर्गुप्तां प्रेषयिष्यति मत्कृते ॥ 36.24 ॥

kaccidakṣauhiṇīṃ bhīmāṃ bharato bhrātṛvatsalaḥ| dhvajinīṃ mantribhirguptāṃ preṣayiṣyati matkṛte || 36.24 ||

"I hope Bharata, devoted to his brother, will send for my sake a terrible army of akshauhinis, bannered and guarded by his ministers."

Shloka 25 (sundara.36.25)

वानराधिपतिः श्रीमान् सुग्रीवः कच्चिदेष्यति। मत्कृते हरिभिर्वीरैर्वृतो दन्तनखायुधैः ॥ 36.25 ॥

vānarādhipatiḥ śrīmān sugrīvaḥ kaccideṣyati| matkṛte haribhirvīrairvṛto dantanakhāyudhaiḥ || 36.25 ||

"Will glorious Sugriva, lord of monkeys, indeed come for my sake, surrounded by heroic monkeys whose weapons are their fangs and claws?"

Shloka 26 (sundara.36.26)

कच्चिच्च लक्ष्मणः शूरः सुमित्रानन्दवर्धनः। अस्त्रविच्छरजालेन राक्षसान् विधमिष्यति ॥ 36.26 ॥

kaccicca lakṣmaṇaḥ śūraḥ sumitrānandavardhanaḥ| astraviccharajālena rākṣasān vidhamiṣyati || 36.26 ||

"And will valiant Lakshmana, who gladdens Sumitra, that master of weapons, indeed destroy the demons with a net of arrows?"

Shloka 27 (sundara.36.27)

रौद्रेण कच्चिदस्त्रेण रामेण निहतं रणे। द्रक्ष्याम्यल्पेन कालेन रावणं ससुहृज्जनम् ॥ 36.27 ॥

raudreṇa kaccidastreṇa rāmeṇa nihataṃ raṇe| drakṣyāmyalpena kālena rāvaṇaṃ sasuhṛjjanam || 36.27 ||

"Within a short time may I see Ravana, together with his kinsmen, slain in battle by Rama with fearsome, blazing weapons."

Shloka 28 (sundara.36.28)

कच्चिन्न तद्धेमसमानवर्णं तस्याननं पद्मसमानगन्धि। मया विना शुष्यति शोकदीनं जलक्षये पद्ममिवातपेन ॥ 36.28 ॥

kaccinna taddhemasamānavarṇaṃ tasyānanaṃ padmasamānagandhi| mayā vinā śuṣyati śokadīnaṃ jalakṣaye padmamivātapena || 36.28 ||

"That face of his, golden in hue and fragrant as a lotus — I hope it is not withering in grief without me, like a lotus parched by the sun as its pool dries up."

Shloka 29 (sundara.36.29)

धर्मापदेशात् त्यजतः स्वराज्यं मां चाप्यरण्यं नयतः पदातेः। नासीद् यथा यस्य न भीर्न शोकः कच्चित् स धैर्यं हृदये करोति ॥ 36.29 ॥

dharmāpadeśāt tyajataḥ svarājyaṃ māṃ cāpyaraṇyaṃ nayataḥ padāteḥ| nāsīd yathā yasya na bhīrna śokaḥ kaccit sa dhairyaṃ hṛdaye karoti || 36.29 ||

"He who, giving up his kingdom for righteousness' sake and leading me on foot into the forest, felt neither disturbance nor fear nor sorrow — I hope that same Rama still holds firm courage in his heart."

Shloka 30 (sundara.36.30)

न चास्य माता न पिता न चान्यः स्नेहाद् विशिष्टोऽस्ति मया समो वा। तावद्ध्यहं दूत जिजीविषेयं यावत् प्रवृत्तिं शृणुयां प्रियस्य ॥ 36.30 ॥

na cāsya mātā na pitā na cānyaḥ snehād viśiṣṭo'sti mayā samo vā| tāvaddhyahaṃ dūta jijīviṣeyaṃ yāvat pravṛttiṃ śṛṇuyāṃ priyasya || 36.30 ||

"Neither his mother nor his father nor anyone else is dearer to him than I, or equal to me, in affection. O messenger, I wish to live only as long as I hear news of my beloved."

Shloka 31 (sundara.36.31)

इतीव देवी वचनं महार्थं तं वानरेन्द्रं मधुरार्थमुक्त्वा। श्रोतुं पुनस्तस्य वचोऽभिरामं रामार्थयुक्तं विरराम रामा ॥ 36.31 ॥

itīva devī vacanaṃ mahārthaṃ taṃ vānarendraṃ madhurārthamuktvā| śrotuṃ punastasya vaco'bhirāmaṃ rāmārthayuktaṃ virarāma rāmā || 36.31 ||

Having spoken thus these deeply meaningful, sweet words, the princess Rama fell silent, so as to hear once more his own delightful words concerning Rama.

Shloka 32 (sundara.36.32)

सीताया वचनं श्रुत्वा मारुतिर्भीमविक्रमः। शिरस्यञ्जलिमाधाय वाक्यमुत्तरमब्रवीत् ॥ 36.32 ॥

sītāyā vacanaṃ śrutvā mārutirbhīmavikramaḥ| śirasyañjalimādhāya vākyamuttaramabravīt || 36.32 ||

Hearing Sita's words, Hanuman of terrible valour, placing his joined palms upon his head, spoke these further words.

Shloka 33 (sundara.36.33)

न त्वामिहस्थां जानीते रामः कमललोचनः। तेन त्वां नानयत्याशु शचीमिव पुरंदरः ॥ 36.33 ॥

na tvāmihasthāṃ jānīte rāmaḥ kamalalocanaḥ| tena tvāṃ nānayatyāśu śacīmiva puraṃdaraḥ || 36.33 ||

"Rama, lotus-eyed, does not know that you are here; that is why he has not swiftly brought you back, as Indra did not swiftly bring back Shachi."

Shloka 34 (sundara.36.34)

श्रुत्वैव च वचो मह्यं क्षिप्रमेष्यति राघवः। चमूं प्रकर्षन् महतीं हर्यृक्षगणसंयुताम् ॥ 36.34 ॥

śrutvaiva ca vaco mahyaṃ kṣiprameṣyati rāghavaḥ| camūṃ prakarṣan mahatīṃ haryṛkṣagaṇasaṃyutām || 36.34 ||

"The moment he hears these words from me, Raghava will come swiftly, leading forth a great army thronging with monkeys and bears."

Shloka 35 (sundara.36.35)

विष्टम्भयित्वा बाणौघैरक्षोभ्यं वरुणालयम्। करिष्यति पुरीं लङ्कां काकुत्स्थः शान्तराक्षसाम् ॥ 36.35 ॥

viṣṭambhayitvā bāṇaughairakṣobhyaṃ varuṇālayam| kariṣyati purīṃ laṅkāṃ kākutsthaḥ śāntarākṣasām || 36.35 ||

"Damming the imperturbable ocean with floods of arrows, Kakutstha will make the city of Lanka empty of demons."

Shloka 36 (sundara.36.36)

तत्र यद्यन्तरा मृत्युर्यदि देवा महासुराः। स्थास्यन्ति पथि रामस्य स तानपि वधिष्यति ॥ 36.36 ॥

tatra yadyantarā mṛtyuryadi devā mahāsurāḥ| sthāsyanti pathi rāmasya sa tānapi vadhiṣyati || 36.36 ||

"There, should Death itself, or the gods together with the demons, stand in Rama's path, he will slay them too."

Shloka 37 (sundara.36.37)

तवादर्शनजेनार्ये शोकेन परिपूरितः। न शर्म लभते रामः सिंहार्दित इव द्विपः ॥ 36.37 ॥

tavādarśanajenārye śokena paripūritaḥ| na śarma labhate rāmaḥ siṃhārdita iva dvipaḥ || 36.37 ||

"O noble one, overwhelmed by grief at not seeing you, Rama finds no peace, like an elephant tormented by a lion."

Shloka 38 (sundara.36.38)

मन्दरेण च ते देवि शपे मूलफलेन च। मलयेन च विन्ध्येन मेरुणा दर्दुरेण च ॥ 36.38 ॥

mandareṇa ca te devi śape mūlaphalena ca| malayena ca vindhyena meruṇā dardureṇa ca || 36.38 ||

"I swear to you, O princess, by Mandara and by our staple food of roots and fruits, by Malaya, Vindhya, Meru, and Dardura,"

Shloka 39 (sundara.36.39)

यथा सुनयनं वल्गु बिम्बोष्ठं चारुकुण्डलम्। मुखं द्रक्ष्यसि रामस्य पूर्णचन्द्रमिवोदितम् ॥ 36.39 ॥

yathā sunayanaṃ valgu bimboṣṭhaṃ cārukuṇḍalam| mukhaṃ drakṣyasi rāmasya pūrṇacandramivoditam || 36.39 ||

"that you shall soon see Rama's face — fine-eyed, lovely, red-lipped, bright with handsome earrings, radiant like the rising full moon."

Shloka 40 (sundara.36.40)

क्षिप्रं द्रक्ष्यसि वैदेहि रामं प्रस्रवणे गिरौ। शतक्रतुमिवासीनं नागपृष्ठस्य मूर्धनि ॥ 36.40 ॥

kṣipraṃ drakṣyasi vaidehi rāmaṃ prasravaṇe girau| śatakratumivāsīnaṃ nāgapṛṣṭhasya mūrdhani || 36.40 ||

"Soon, O Vaidehi, you shall see Rama on Mount Prasravana, seated like Indra of the hundred sacrifices upon the crest of Airavata."

Shloka 41 (sundara.36.41)

न मांसं राघवो भुङ्क्ते न चैव मधु सेवते। वन्यं सुविहितं नित्यं भक्तमश्नाति पञ्चमम् ॥ 36.41 ॥

na māṃsaṃ rāghavo bhuṅ‍kte na caiva madhu sevate| vanyaṃ suvihitaṃ nityaṃ bhaktamaśnāti pañcamam || 36.41 ||

"Raghava eats no meat, nor does he ever partake of honeyed wine; every evening he takes only the forest fare that is duly set out for him."

Shloka 42 (sundara.36.42)

नैव दंशान् न मशकान् न कीटान् न सरीसृपान्। राघवोऽपनयेद् गात्रात् त्वद्गतेनान्तरात्मना ॥ 36.42 ॥

naiva daṃśān na maśakān na kīṭān na sarīsṛpān| rāghavo'panayed gātrāt tvada‍gatenāntarātmanā || 36.42 ||

"With his inmost self fixed upon you, Raghava does not even brush away from his body the gnats, mosquitoes, insects, or crawling things."

Shloka 43 (sundara.36.43)

नित्यं ध्यानपरो रामो नित्यं शोकपरायणः। नान्यच्चिन्तयते किंचित् स तु कामवशं गतः ॥ 36.43 ॥

nityaṃ dhyānaparo rāmo nityaṃ śokaparāyaṇaḥ| nānyaccintayate kiṃcit sa tu kāmavaśaṃ gataḥ || 36.43 ||

"Rama is ever lost in thought, ever given over to sorrow; he ponders nothing else, so wholly is he mastered by longing."

Shloka 44 (sundara.36.44)

अनिद्रः सततं रामः सुप्तोऽपि च नरोत्तमः। सीतेति मधुरां वाणीं व्याहरन् प्रतिबुध्यते ॥ 36.44 ॥

anidraḥ satataṃ rāmaḥ supto'pi ca narottamaḥ| sīteti madhurāṃ vāṇīṃ vyāharan pratibudhyate || 36.44 ||

"Rama is sleepless without end; and even should that best of men fall asleep, he wakes again murmuring the sweet word, 'Sita.'"

Shloka 45 (sundara.36.45)

दृष्ट्वा फलं वा पुष्पं वा यच्चान्यत् स्त्रीमनोहरम्। बहुशो हा प्रियेत्येवं श्वसंस्त्वामभिभाषते ॥ 36.45 ॥

dṛṣṭvā phalaṃ vā puṣpaṃ vā yaccānyat strīmanoharam| bahuśo hā priyetyevaṃ śvasaṃstvāmabhibhāṣate || 36.45 ||

"Seeing a fruit, or a flower, or anything else lovely enough to delight a woman's heart, he sighs again and again and speaks of you as 'my beloved'."

Shloka 46 (sundara.36.46)

स देवि नित्यं परितप्यमान- स्त्वामेव सीतेत्यभिभाषमाणः। धृतव्रतो राजसुतो महात्मा तवैव लाभाय कृतप्रयत्नः ॥ 36.46 ॥

sa devi nityaṃ paritapyamāna- stvāmeva sītetyabhibhāṣamāṇaḥ| dhṛtavrato rājasuto mahātmā tavaiva lābhāya kṛtaprayatnaḥ || 36.46 ||

"O princess, that great-souled prince, ever consumed with grief, ever murmuring only 'Sita, Sita,' steadfast in his vow, strives only to win you back."

Shloka 47 (sundara.36.47)

सा रामसंकीर्तनवीतशोका रामस्य शोकेन समानशोका। शरन्मुखेनाम्बुदशेषचन्द्रा निशेव वैदेहसुता बभूव ॥ 36.47 ॥

sā rāmasaṃkīrtanavītaśokā rāmasya śokena samānaśokā| śaranmukhenāmbudaśeṣacandrā niśeva vaidehasutā babhūva || 36.47 ||

That daughter of Videha, her grief lightened at hearing Rama so praised yet still sharing equally in Rama's sorrow, became like an autumn night with the moon veiled by the last remaining clouds.
