Hanuman Burns the Sanctuary-Palace

Shloka 1 (sundara.43.1)

ततः स किंकरान् हत्वा हनूमान् ध्यानमास्थितः। वनं भग्नं मया चैत्यप्रासादो न विनाशितः ॥ 43.1 ॥

tataḥ sa kiṃkarān hatvā hanūmān dhyānamāsthitaḥ| vanaṃ bhagnaṃ mayā caityaprāsādo na vināśitaḥ || 43.1 ||

Then, having slain the Kinkaras, Hanuman fell to thinking: "The grove I have broken, but the palace of the sanctuary I have not destroyed."

Shloka 2 (sundara.43.2)

तस्मात् प्रासादमद्यैवमिमं विध्वंसयाम्यहम्। इति संचिन्त्य हनुमान् मनसादर्शयन् बलम् ॥ 43.2 ॥

tasmāt prāsādamadyaivamimaṃ vidhvaṃsayāmyaham| iti saṃcintya hanumān manasādarśayan balam || 43.2 ||

"Therefore this very day I shall lay this palace low as well" — thinking thus, Hanuman showed forth his strength in his mind.

Shloka 3 (sundara.43.3)

चैत्यप्रासादमुत्प्लुत्य मेरुशृङ्गमिवोन्नतम्। आरुरोह हरिश्रेष्ठो हनूमान् मारुतात्मजः ॥ 43.3 ॥

caityaprāsādamutplutya meruśṛṅgamivonnatam| āruroha hariśreṣṭho hanūmān mārutātmajaḥ || 43.3 ||

Leaping up toward the sanctuary's palace, lofty as the peak of Meru, that foremost of monkeys, son of the wind-god, ascended it.

Shloka 4 (sundara.43.4)

आरुह्य गिरिसंकाशं प्रासादं हरियूथपः। बभौ स सुमहातेजाः प्रतिसूर्य इवोदितः ॥ 43.4 ॥

āruhya girisaṃkāśaṃ prāsādaṃ hariyūthapaḥ| babhau sa sumahātejāḥ pratisūrya ivoditaḥ || 43.4 ||

Climbing that palace, mountain-like, the lord of the monkey host shone forth like a second risen sun.

Shloka 5 (sundara.43.5)

सम्प्रधृष्य तु दुर्धर्षश्चैत्यप्रासादमुन्नतम्। हनूमान् प्रज्वलँल्लक्ष्म्या पारियात्रोपमोऽभवत् ॥ 43.5 ॥

sampradhṛṣya tu durdharṣaścaityaprāsādamunnatam| hanūmān prajvala~llakṣmyā pāriyātropamo'bhavat || 43.5 ||

That unassailable one, overpowering the lofty sanctuary-palace, blazing with splendor, Hanuman became like the Pariyatra mountain.

Shloka 6 (sundara.43.6)

स भूत्वा सुमहाकायः प्रभावान् मारुतात्मजः। धृष्टमास्फोटयामास लङ्कां शब्देन पूरयन् ॥ 43.6 ॥

sa bhūtvā sumahākāyaḥ prabhāvān mārutātmajaḥ| dhṛṣṭamāsphoṭayāmāsa laṅkāṃ śabdena pūrayan || 43.6 ||

Then, having become vast of body, the son of the wind-god boldly clapped his arms, filling Lanka with the sound.

Shloka 7 (sundara.43.7)

तस्यास्फोटितशब्देन महता श्रोत्रघातिना। पेतुर्विहंगमास्तत्र चैत्यपालाश्च मोहिताः ॥ 43.7 ॥

tasyāsphoṭitaśabdena mahatā śrotraghātinā| peturvihaṃgamāstatra caityapālāśca mohitāḥ || 43.7 ||

At that great, ear-splitting sound of the clap, birds fell there, and the sanctuary's guardians too swooned.

Shloka 8 (sundara.43.8)

अस्त्रविज्जयतां रामो लक्ष्मणश्च महाबलः। राजा जयति सुग्रीवो राघवेणाभिपालितः ॥ 43.8 ॥

astravijjayatāṃ rāmo lakṣmaṇaśca mahābalaḥ| rājā jayati sugrīvo rāghaveṇābhipālitaḥ || 43.8 ||

"Victorious be Rama, skilled in the science of arms, and the mighty Lakshmana! Victorious be King Sugriva, protected by Raghava!"

Shloka 9 (sundara.43.9)

दासोऽहं कोसलेन्द्रस्य रामस्याक्लिष्टकर्मणः। हनूमान् शत्रुसैन्यानां निहन्ता मारुतात्मजः ॥ 43.9 ॥

dāso'haṃ kosalendrasya rāmasyākliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ| hanūmān śatrusainyānāṃ nihantā mārutātmajaḥ || 43.9 ||

"I am the servant of Rama, lord of Kosala, whose deeds are unwearied — Hanuman, son of the wind-god, the destroyer of the armies of the foe."

Shloka 10 (sundara.43.10)

न रावणसहस्रं मे युद्धे प्रतिबलं भवेत्। शिलाभिश्च प्रहरतः पादपैश्च सहस्रशः ॥ 43.10 ॥

na rāvaṇasahasraṃ me yuddhe pratibalaṃ bhavet| śilābhiśca praharataḥ pādapaiśca sahasraśaḥ || 43.10 ||

"A thousand Ravanas would be no match for me in battle, striking as I do with boulders and with trees by the thousand."

Shloka 11 (sundara.43.11)

धर्षयित्वा पुरीं लङ्कामभिवाद्य च मैथिलीम्। समृद्धार्थो गमिष्यामि मिषतां सर्वरक्षसाम् ॥ 43.11 ॥

dharṣayitvā purīṃ laṅkāmabhivādya ca maithilīm| samṛddhārtho gamiṣyāmi miṣatāṃ sarvarakṣasām || 43.11 ||

"Having assailed this city of Lanka, and having paid homage to Maithili, I shall go forth successful in my purpose, before the very eyes of all the rakshasas."

Shloka 12 (sundara.43.12)

एवमुक्त्वा महाकायश्चैत्यस्थो हरियूथपः। ननाद भीमनिर्ह्रादो रक्षसां जनयन् भयम् ॥ 43.12 ॥

evamuktvā mahākāyaścaityastho hariyūthapaḥ| nanāda bhīmanirhrādo rakṣasāṃ janayan bhayam || 43.12 ||

Having spoken thus, that vast-bodied lord of the monkey host, standing on the sanctuary, roared a terrible roar, striking fear into the demons.

Shloka 13 (sundara.43.13)

तेन नादेन महता चैत्यपालाः शतं ययुः। गृहीत्वा विविधानस्त्रान् प्रासान् खड्गान् परश्वधान् ॥ 43.13 ॥

tena nādena mahatā caityapālāḥ śataṃ yayuḥ| gṛhītvā vividhānastrān prāsān khaḍgān paraśvadhān || 43.13 ||

At that great roaring sound, a hundred guardians of the sanctuary went forth, taking up varied weapons — lances, swords and axes.

Shloka 14 (sundara.43.14)

विसृजन्तो महाकाया मारुतिं पर्यवारयन्। ते गदाभिर्विचित्राभिः परिघैः काञ्चनाङ्गदैः ॥ 43.14 ॥

visṛjanto mahākāyā mārutiṃ paryavārayan| te gadābhirvicitrābhiḥ parighaiḥ kāñcanāṅgadaiḥ || 43.14 ||

Hurling these, those huge-bodied ones surrounded Maruti; they came upon him with strange maces, iron bars ringed in gold —

Shloka 15 (sundara.43.15)

आजग्मुर्वानरश्रेष्ठं बाणैश्चादित्यसंनिभैः। आवर्त इव गङ्गायास्तोयस्य विपुलो महान् ॥ 43.15 ॥

ājagmurvānaraśreṣṭhaṃ bāṇaiścādityasaṃnibhaiḥ| āvarta iva gaṅgāyāstoyasya vipulo mahān || 43.15 ||

— and came upon that foremost of monkeys with arrows bright as the sun, as a vast whirlpool of the waters of the Ganga surrounds and encircles him, that host of demons.

Shloka 16 (sundara.43.16)

परिक्षिप्य हरिश्रेष्ठं स बभौ रक्षसां गणः। ततो वातात्मजः क्रुद्धो भीमरूपं समास्थितः ॥ 43.16 ॥

parikṣipya hariśreṣṭhaṃ sa babhau rakṣasāṃ gaṇaḥ| tato vātātmajaḥ kruddho bhīmarūpaṃ samāsthitaḥ || 43.16 ||

Surrounding that foremost of monkeys, that host of demons shone forth; then the son of the wind-god, enraged, assumed a fearsome form.

Shloka 17 (sundara.43.17)

प्रासादस्य महांस्तस्य स्तम्भं हेमपरिष्कृतम्। उत्पाटयित्वा वेगेन हनूमान् मारुतात्मजः ॥ 43.17 ॥

prāsādasya mahāṃstasya stambhaṃ hemapariṣkṛtam| utpāṭayitvā vegena hanūmān mārutātmajaḥ || 43.17 ||

Tearing loose with great force a vast, gold-adorned pillar of that palace, Hanuman, son of the wind-god,

Shloka 18 (sundara.43.18)

ततस्तं भ्रामयामास शतधारं महाबलः। तत्र चाग्निः समभवत् प्रासादश्चाप्यदह्यत ॥ 43.18 ॥

tatastaṃ bhrāmayāmāsa śatadhāraṃ mahābalaḥ| tatra cāgniḥ samabhavat prāsādaścāpyadahyata || 43.18 ||

then whirled it about, that hundred-edged pillar, with all his might; and fire sprang up there, and the palace itself began to burn.

Shloka 19 (sundara.43.19)

दह्यमानं ततो दृष्ट्वा प्रासादं हरियूथपः। स राक्षसशतं हत्वा वज्रेणेन्द्र इवासुरान् ॥ 43.19 ॥

dahyamānaṃ tato dṛṣṭvā prāsādaṃ hariyūthapaḥ| sa rākṣasaśataṃ hatvā vajreṇendra ivāsurān || 43.19 ||

Seeing the palace ablaze, the lord of the monkey host, having slain a hundred demons as Indra slays the asuras with the thunderbolt,

Shloka 20 (sundara.43.20)

अन्तरिक्षस्थितः श्रीमानिदं वचनमब्रवीत्। मादृशानां सहस्राणि विसृष्टानि महात्मनाम् ॥ 43.20 ॥

antarikṣasthitaḥ śrīmānidaṃ vacanamabravīt| mādṛśānāṃ sahasrāṇi visṛṣṭāni mahātmanām || 43.20 ||

standing there in the sky, resplendent, spoke this word: "Thousands upon thousands like me, great of soul,"

Shloka 21 (sundara.43.21)

बलिनां वानरेन्द्राणां सुग्रीववशवर्तिनाम्। अटन्ति वसुधां कृत्स्नां वयमन्ये च वानराः ॥ 43.21 ॥

balināṃ vānarendrāṇāṃ sugrīvavaśavartinām| aṭanti vasudhāṃ kṛtsnāṃ vayamanye ca vānarāḥ || 43.21 ||

"— mighty lords of the monkeys, obedient to Sugriva's will, have been sent forth; we and other monkeys now range over the whole earth."

Shloka 22 (sundara.43.22)

दशनागबलाः केचित् केचिद् दशगुणोत्तराः। केचिन्नागसहस्रस्य बभूवुस्तुल्यविक्रमाः ॥ 43.22 ॥

daśanāgabalāḥ kecit kecid daśaguṇottarāḥ| kecinnāgasahasrasya babhūvustulyavikramāḥ || 43.22 ||

"Some have the strength of ten elephants, some the strength beyond that tenfold; some are equal in valor to a thousand elephants."

Shloka 23 (sundara.43.23)

सन्ति चौघबलाः केचित् सन्ति वायुबलोपमाः। अप्रमेयबलाः केचित् तत्रासन् हरियूथपाः ॥ 43.23 ॥

santi caughabalāḥ kecit santi vāyubalopamāḥ| aprameyabalāḥ kecit tatrāsan hariyūthapāḥ || 43.23 ||

"Some have the strength of a mighty torrent; some are equal to the wind in strength; some lords of the monkey host are of measureless might."

Shloka 24 (sundara.43.24)

ईदृग्विधैस्तु हरिभिर्वृतो दन्तनखायुधैः। शतैः शतसहस्रैश्च कोटिभिश्चायुतैरपि ॥ 43.24 ॥

īdṛgvidhaistu haribhirvṛto dantanakhāyudhaiḥ| śataiḥ śatasahasraiśca koṭibhiścāyutairapi || 43.24 ||

"Surrounded by hundreds, thousands, hundred-thousands, crores and myriads of such monkeys, armed with tooth and claw, Sugriva will come, the destroyer of you all."

Shloka 25 (sundara.43.25)

आगमिष्यति सुग्रीवः सर्वेषां वो निषूदनः। नेयमस्ति पुरी लङ्का न यूयं न च रावणः। यस्य त्विक्ष्वाकुवीरेण बद्धं वैरं महात्मना ॥ 43.25 ॥

āgamiṣyati sugrīvaḥ sarveṣāṃ vo niṣūdanaḥ| neyamasti purī laṅkā na yūyaṃ na ca rāvaṇaḥ| yasya tvikṣvākuvīreṇa baddhaṃ vairaṃ mahātmanā || 43.25 ||

"He, who is coming, is the destroyer of all of you. This city Lanka shall no longer stand, nor shall you, nor Ravana — for you have bound fast your enmity with the great-souled hero of the Ikshvaku line."
