The Slaying of Jambumali
Shloka 1 (sundara.44.1)
संदिष्टो राक्षसेन्द्रेण प्रहस्तस्य सुतो बली । जम्बुमाली महादंष्ट्रो निर्जगाम धनुर्धरः ॥ 44.1 ॥
saṃdiṣṭo rākṣasendreṇa prahastasya suto balī | jambumālī mahādaṃṣṭro nirjagāma dhanurdharaḥ || 44.1 ||
Commanded by the lord of the rakshasas, Jambumali, the mighty and great-tusked son of Prahasta, wielder of the bow, went forth.
Shloka 2 (sundara.44.2)
रक्तमाल्याम्बरधरः स्रग्वी रुचिरकुण्डलः । महान् विवृत्तनयनश्चण्डः समरदुर्जयः ॥ 44.2 ॥
raktamālyāmbaradharaḥ sragvī rucirakuṇḍalaḥ | mahān vivṛttanayanaścaṇḍaḥ samaradurjayaḥ || 44.2 ||
Wearing crimson garlands and garments, garlanded, with bright earrings, huge, with wide-rolling eyes, fierce, unconquerable in battle —
Shloka 3 (sundara.44.3)
धनुः शक्रधनुःप्रख्यं महद्रुचिरसायकम् । विस्फारयानो वेगेन वज्राशनिसमस्वनम् ॥ 44.3 ॥
dhanuḥ śakradhanuḥprakhyaṃ mahadrucirasāyakam | visphārayāno vegena vajrāśanisamasvanam || 44.3 ||
— stretching with great speed his bow, splendid as Indra's own bow, huge, with fine arrows, that resounded like thunder and lightning together.
Shloka 4 (sundara.44.4)
तस्य विस्फारघोषेण धनुषो महता दिशः । प्रदिशश्च नभश्चैव सहसा समपूर्यत ॥ 44.4 ॥
tasya visphāraghoṣeṇa dhanuṣo mahatā diśaḥ | pradiśaśca nabhaścaiva sahasā samapūryata || 44.4 ||
At the great twanging roar of his bow, the quarters, the intermediate points and the very sky itself were suddenly filled with sound.
Shloka 5 (sundara.44.5)
रथेन खरयुक्तेन तमागतमुदीक्ष्य सः । हनुमान् वेगसंपन्नो जहर्ष च ननाद च ॥ 44.5 ॥
rathena kharayuktena tamāgatamudīkṣya saḥ | hanumān vegasaṃpanno jaharṣa ca nanāda ca || 44.5 ||
Seeing him arrive in his chariot yoked with mules, Hanuman, full of speed and vigor, rejoiced and roared aloud.
Shloka 6 (sundara.44.6)
तं तोरणविटङ्कस्थं हनुमन्तं महाकपिम् । जम्बुमाली महाबाहुर्विव्याध निशितैः शरैः ॥ 44.6 ॥
taṃ toraṇaviṭaṅkasthaṃ hanumantaṃ mahākapim | jambumālī mahābāhurvivyādha niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ || 44.6 ||
That great-armed Jambumali pierced Hanuman, the great monkey standing atop the archway, with his sharpened arrows.
Shloka 7 (sundara.44.7)
अर्धचन्द्रेण वदने शिरस्येकेन कर्णिना । बाह्वोर्विव्याध नाराचैर्दशभिस्तं कपीश्वरम् ॥ 44.7 ॥
ardhacandreṇa vadane śirasyekena karṇinā | bāhvorvivyādha nārācairdaśabhistaṃ kapīśvaram || 44.7 ||
With a crescent-headed shaft he struck him in the face, with an ear-shaped one on the head, and with ten iron-tipped arrows he pierced that lord of monkeys in the arms.
Shloka 8 (sundara.44.8)
तस्य तच्छुशुभे ताम्रं शरेणाभिहतं मुखम् । शरदीवाम्बुजम्फुल्लं विद्धं भास्कररश्मिना ॥ 44.8 ॥
tasya tacchuśubhe tāmraṃ śareṇābhihataṃ mukham | śaradīvāmbujamphullaṃ viddhaṃ bhāskararaśminā || 44.8 ||
That coppery face of his, struck by the arrow, shone as a lotus blooms in autumn, pierced by the rays of the sun.
Shloka 9 (sundara.44.9)
तत्तस्य रक्तं रक्तेन रञ्जितं शुशुभे मुखम् । यथाकाशे महापद्मं सिक्तं चन्दनबिन्दुभिः ॥ 44.9 ॥
tattasya raktaṃ raktena rañjitaṃ śuśubhe mukham | yathākāśe mahāpadmaṃ siktaṃ candanabindubhiḥ || 44.9 ||
That mouth of his, red and now reddened further with blood, shone like a great lotus in the sky sprinkled with drops of sandal-paste.
Shloka 10 (sundara.44.10)
चुकोप बाणाभिहतो राक्षसस्य महाकपिः । ततः पार्श्वेतिविपुलां ददर्श महतीं शिलाम् ॥ 44.10 ॥
cukopa bāṇābhihato rākṣasasya mahākapiḥ | tataḥ pārśvetivipulāṃ dadarśa mahatīṃ śilām || 44.10 ||
Struck by the arrows, that great monkey grew enraged with the rakshasa, and then saw, close by, a vast boulder.
Shloka 11 (sundara.44.11)
तरसा तां समुत्पाट्य चिक्षेप बलवद्बली । तां शरैर्दशभिः क्रुद्धस्ताडयामास राक्षसः ॥ 44.11 ॥
tarasā tāṃ samutpāṭya cikṣepa balavadbalī | tāṃ śarairdaśabhiḥ kruddhastāḍayāmāsa rākṣasaḥ || 44.11 ||
Wrenching it up with force, that mighty one hurled it; but the enraged rakshasa struck that boulder down with ten arrows.
Shloka 12 (sundara.44.12)
विपन्नं कर्म तद्दृष्ट्वा हनुमांश्चण्डविक्रमः । सालं विपुलमुत्पाट्य भ्रामयामास वीर्यवान् ॥ 44.12 ॥
vipannaṃ karma taddṛṣṭvā hanumāṃścaṇḍavikramaḥ | sālaṃ vipulamutpāṭya bhrāmayāmāsa vīryavān || 44.12 ||
Seeing that effort come to nothing, Hanuman of fierce prowess and great might tore up a huge sal tree and whirled it about.
Shloka 13 (sundara.44.13)
भ्रामयन्तं कपिं दृष्ट्वा सालवृक्षं महाबलम् । चिक्षेप सुबहून् बाणान् जम्बुमाली महाबलः ॥ 44.13 ॥
bhrāmayantaṃ kapiṃ dṛṣṭvā sālavṛkṣaṃ mahābalam | cikṣepa subahūn bāṇān jambumālī mahābalaḥ || 44.13 ||
Seeing that mighty monkey whirling the sal tree, the exceedingly powerful Jambumali loosed a great multitude of arrows.
Shloka 14 (sundara.44.14)
सालं चतुर्भिश्चिच्छेद वानरं पञ्चभिर्भुजे । शिरस्येकेन बाणेन दशभिस्तु स्तनान्तरे ॥ 44.14 ॥
sālaṃ caturbhiściccheda vānaraṃ pañcabhirbhuje | śirasyekena bāṇena daśabhistu stanāntare || 44.14 ||
With four arrows he cut the sal tree apart, with five he struck the monkey's arm, with one arrow the head, and with ten the space between the breasts.
Shloka 15 (sundara.44.15)
स शरैः पूरिततनुः क्रोधेन महता वृतः । तमेव परिघं गृह्य भ्रामयामास वेगतः ॥ 44.15 ॥
sa śaraiḥ pūritatanuḥ krodhena mahatā vṛtaḥ | tameva parighaṃ gṛhya bhrāmayāmāsa vegataḥ || 44.15 ||
His body now filled with arrows, seized by great fury, that monkey took up that same iron bar and, gripping it, whirled it with speed.
Shloka 16 (sundara.44.16)
अतिवेगोतिवेगेन भ्रामयित्वा बलोत्कटः । परिघं पातयामास जम्बुमालेर्महोरसि ॥ 44.16 ॥
ativegotivegena bhrāmayitvā balotkaṭaḥ | parighaṃ pātayāmāsa jambumālermahorasi || 44.16 ||
Whirling it round and round with ever-mounting speed, that one fierce with strength brought the bar down upon Jambumali's mighty chest.
Shloka 17 (sundara.44.17)
तस्य चैव शिरो नास्ति न बाहू न च जानुनी । न धनुर्नरथो नाश्वास्तत्रादृश्यन्त नेषवः ॥ 44.17 ॥
tasya caiva śiro nāsti na bāhū na ca jānunī | na dhanurnaratho nāśvāstatrādṛśyanta neṣavaḥ || 44.17 ||
Of him then, neither head nor arms nor knees were to be seen; neither bow, nor chariot, nor horses, nor even his arrows were seen there.
Shloka 18 (sundara.44.18)
स हतस्तरसा तेन जम्बुमाली महाबलः । पपात निहतो भूमौ चूर्णिताङ्गविभूषणः ॥ 44.18 ॥
sa hatastarasā tena jambumālī mahābalaḥ | papāta nihato bhūmau cūrṇitāṅgavibhūṣaṇaḥ || 44.18 ||
Struck down thus swiftly by him, that mighty Jambumali, his limbs and ornaments crushed to powder, fell slain upon the ground.
Shloka 19 (sundara.44.19)
जम्बुमालिं च निहतं किङ्करांश्च महाबलान् । चुक्रोध रावणः श्रुत्वा कोपसंरक्त लोचनः ॥ 44.19 ॥
jambumāliṃ ca nihataṃ kiṅkarāṃśca mahābalān | cukrodha rāvaṇaḥ śrutvā kopasaṃrakta locanaḥ || 44.19 ||
Hearing that Jambumali and the mighty Kinkaras had been slain, Ravana grew furious, his eyes reddened with rage.
Shloka 20 (sundara.44.20)
स रोषसंवर्तितताम्रलोचनः प्रहस्त पुत्रे निहते महाबले । अमात्यपुत्रानतिवीर्यविक्रमान् समादिदेशाशु निशाचरेश्वरः ॥ 44.20 ॥
sa roṣasaṃvartitatāmralocanaḥ prahasta putre nihate mahābale | amātyaputrānativīryavikramān samādideśāśu niśācareśvaraḥ || 44.20 ||
His eyes rolled coppery-red with fury at the death of the mighty son of Prahasta; that lord of night-roamers at once commanded the sons of his ministers, of surpassing valor and prowess.
