tataste rākṣasendreṇa coditā mantriṇaḥ sutāḥ| niryayurbhavanāt tasmāt sapta saptārcivarcasaḥ || 45.1 ||
Then those seven sons of the chief minister, urged on by the lord of the rakshasas, blazing with a splendor like fire, went forth from that palace.
Shloka 2 (sundara.45.2)
mahadabalaparīvārā dhanuṣmanto mahābalāḥ| kṛtāstrāstravidāṃ śreṣṭhāḥ parasparajayaiṣiṇaḥ || 45.2 ||
Surrounded by a great host, wielders of bows, mighty ones, foremost among the knowers of weapons and their use, each eager for victory over the other —
Shloka 3 (sundara.45.3)
hemajālaparikṣiptairdhvajavadbhiḥ patākibhiḥ| toyadasvananirghoṣairvājiyuktairmahārathaiḥ || 45.3 ||
— in great chariots strung about with nets of gold, bannered and hung with pennants, rumbling like storm-clouds, yoked with swift steeds,
Shloka 4 (sundara.45.4)
taptakāñcanacitrāṇi cāpānyamitavikramāḥ| visphārayantaḥ saṃhṛṣṭāstaḍidvanta ivāmbudāḥ || 45.4 ||
— stretching their bows, splendid, wrought of refined gold, of measureless valor, exultant, they shone like storm-clouds shot with lightning.
Shloka 5 (sundara.45.5)
jananyastāstatasteṣāṃ viditvā kiṃkarān hatān| babhūvuḥ śokasambhrāntāḥ sabāndhavasuhṛjjanāḥ || 45.5 ||
Their mothers, learning then that the Kinkaras had been slain, grew distraught with grief, together with their kinsmen and friends.
Shloka 6 (sundara.45.6)
te parasparasaṃgharṣāt taptakāñcanabhūṣaṇāḥ| abhipeturhanūmantaṃ toraṇasthamavasthitam || 45.6 ||
Those sons, adorned with ornaments of refined gold, clashing against one another in their eagerness, rushed upon Hanuman as he stood fast upon the archway.
Shloka 7 (sundara.45.7)
sṛjanto bāṇavṛṣṭiṃ te rathagarjitaniḥsvanāḥ| prāvṛṭkāla ivāmbhodā vicerurnairṛtāmbudāḥ || 45.7 ||
Loosing a shower of arrows, their chariots thundering, they ranged about like storm-clouds of the monsoon season, those raincloud-like night-roamers.
Shloka 8 (sundara.45.8)
avakīrṇastatastābhirhanūmān śaravṛṣṭibhiḥ| abhavat saṃvṛtākāraḥ śailarāḍiva vṛṣṭibhiḥ || 45.8 ||
Then, overspread by that rain of arrows, Hanuman became hidden from sight, as a mountain-king is veiled by ceaseless torrents of rain.
Shloka 9 (sundara.45.9)
sa śarān vañcayāmāsa teṣāmāśucaraḥ kapiḥ| rathavegāṃśca vīrāṇāṃ vicaran vimale'mbare || 45.9 ||
Ranging swiftly through the clear sky, that fleet-footed monkey rendered vain both the arrows and the swift chariots of those heroes.
Shloka 10 (sundara.45.10)
sa taiḥ krīḍan dhanuṣmadbhirvyomni vīraḥ prakāśate| dhanuṣmadbhiryathā meghairmārutaḥ prabhurambare || 45.10 ||
Sporting there among those bow-wielders in the sky, that hero shone forth as the mighty wind-god sports among clouds bearing the rainbow.
Shloka 11 (sundara.45.11)
sa kṛtvā ninadaṃ ghoraṃ trāsayaṃstāṃ mahācamūm| cakāra hanumān vegaṃ teṣu rakṣaḥsu vīryavān || 45.11 ||
Then, letting loose a terrible roar and striking terror into that great army, mighty Hanuman fell upon those rakshasas with full force.
Shloka 12 (sundara.45.12)
talenābhihanat kāṃścit pādaiḥ kāṃścit paraṃtapaḥ| muṣṭibhiścāhanat kāṃścinnakhaiḥ kāṃścid vyadārayat || 45.12 ||
That scorcher of foes struck down some with the flat of his hand, some with his feet, some he struck with his fists, and some he tore apart with his claws.
Shloka 13 (sundara.45.13)
pramamāthorasā kāṃścidūrubhyāmaparānapi| kecit tasyaiva nādena tatraiva patitā bhuvi || 45.13 ||
Some he crushed with his chest, others again with his thighs; some fell dead there upon the ground by his very roar alone.
Shloka 14 (sundara.45.14)
tatasteṣvavasan neṣu bhūmau nipatiteṣu ca| tatsainyamagamat sarvaṃ diśo daśa bhayārditam || 45.14 ||
Then, with those demons fallen and lying dead upon the ground, that whole army fled in the ten directions, stricken with terror.
Shloka 15 (sundara.45.15)
vinedurvisvaraṃ nāgā nipeturbhuvi vājinaḥ| bhagnanīḍadhvajacchatrairbhūśca kīrṇābhavad rathaiḥ || 45.15 ||
Elephants trumpeted in discordant cries, horses fell upon the ground; the earth was strewn with chariots, their nests of seats, their banners and their canopies broken.
Shloka 16 (sundara.45.16)
sravatā rudhireṇātha sravantyo darśitāḥ pathi| vividhaiśca svanairlaṅkā nanāda vikṛtaṃ tadā || 45.16 ||
Then streams flowing with blood were seen along the way, and Lanka resounded then with cries of every dreadful kind.
Shloka 17 (sundara.45.17)
sa tān pravṛddhān vinihatya rākṣasān mahābalaścaṇḍaparākramaḥ kapiḥ| yuyutsuranyaiḥ punareva rākṣasai- stadeva vīro'bhijagāma toraṇam || 45.17 ||
That mighty one, of fierce prowess, having thus slain those arrogant rakshasas, still eager for battle with other demons, that hero returned once more to the very same archway.
