Kala Delivers Brahma's Message

Shloka 1 (uttara.104.1)

शृणु राजन्महासत्व यदर्थमहमागतः । पितामहेन देवेन प्रेषितो ऽस्मि महाबल ।। ७.१०४.१ ।।

śṛṇu rājanmahāsattva yadarthamahamāgataḥ | pitāmahena devena preṣito 'smi mahābala || 7.104.1 ||

"Listen, O king of great might, to the purpose for which I have come; I have been sent, O mighty one, by the divine grandsire, Brahma."

Shloka 2 (uttara.104.2)

तवाहं पूर्वसद्भावे पुत्रः परपुरञ्जय । मायासम्भावितो वीर कालः सर्वसमाहरः ।। ७.१०४.२ ।।

tavāhaṃ pūrvasadbhāve putraḥ parapurañjaya | māyāsambhāvito vīra kālaḥ sarvasamāharaḥ || 7.104.2 ||

"O conqueror of enemy cities, in your former state of being I was your son, brought into existence by illusion -- I am Time, the gatherer-in of all things, O hero."

Shloka 3 (uttara.104.3)

पितामहश्च भगवानाह लोकपतिः प्रभुः । समयस्ते कृतः सौम्य लोकान्सम्परिरक्षितुम् ।। ७.१०४.३ ।।

pitāmahaśca bhagavānāha lokapatiḥ prabhuḥ | samayaste kṛtaḥ saumya lokānsamparirakṣitum || 7.104.3 ||

"And the divine grandsire, lord of the worlds, has said: A period was set for you, gentle one, to protect the worlds."

Shloka 4 (uttara.104.4)

सङ्क्षिप्य हि पुरा लोकान्मायया स्वयमेव हि । महार्णवे शयानो ऽप्सु मां त्वं पूर्वमजीजनः ।। ७.१०४.४ ।।

saṅkṣipya hi purā lokānmāyayā svayameva hi | mahārṇave śayāno 'psu māṃ tvaṃ pūrvamajījanaḥ || 7.104.4 ||

"Long ago, having drawn in the worlds through your own illusion, lying upon the waters of the great ocean, you first brought me into being."

Shloka 5 (uttara.104.5)

भोगवन्तं ततो नागमनन्तमुदकेशयम् । मायया जनयित्वा त्वं द्वौ च सत्त्वौ महाबलौ ।। ७.१०४.५ ।।

bhogavantaṃ tato nāgamanantamudakeśayam | māyayā janayitvā tvaṃ dvau ca sattvau mahābalau || 7.104.5 ||

"Then, having created through illusion the serpent Ananta with his hoods, resting upon the waters, you also created two beings of immense might."

Shloka 6 (uttara.104.6)

मधुं च कैटभं चैव ययोरस्थिचयैर्वृता । इयं पर्वतसम्बाधा मेदिनी चाभवन्मही ।। ७.१०४.६ ।।

madhuṃ ca kaiṭabhaṃ caiva yayorasthicayairvṛtā | iyaṃ parvatasambādhā medinī cābhavanmahī || 7.104.6 ||

"These were Madhu and Kaitabha, from whose heaped bones this earth, crowded with mountains, came into being."

Shloka 7 (uttara.104.7)

पद्मे दिव्ये ऽर्कसङ्काशे नाभ्यामुत्पाद्य मामपि । प्राजापत्यं त्वया कर्म मयि सर्वं निवेशितम् ।। ७.१०४.७ ।।

padme divye 'rkasaṅkāśe nābhyāmutpādya māmapi | prājāpatyaṃ tvayā karma mayi sarvaṃ niveśitam || 7.104.7 ||

"And having also brought me forth from your navel, on a divine lotus radiant as the sun, you entrusted to me the entire work of creation, that of Prajapati."

Shloka 8 (uttara.104.8)

सो ऽहं सन्न्यस्तभारो हि त्वामुपासे जगत्पतिम् । रक्षां विधत्स्व भूतेषु मम तेजस्करो भवान् ।। ७.१०४.८ ।।

so 'haṃ sannyastabhāro hi tvāmupāse jagatpatim | rakṣāṃ vidhatsva bhūteṣu mama tejaskaro bhavān || 7.104.8 ||

"I, having laid down that burden, now serve you, lord of the world; ordain protection for all beings, for you are the source of my very power."

Shloka 9 (uttara.104.9)

ततस्त्वमपि दुर्धर्षात्तस्माद्भावात्सनातनात् । रक्षार्थं सर्वभूतानां विष्णुत्वमुपजग्मिवान् ।। ७.१०४.९ ।।

tatastvamapi durdharṣāttasmādbhāvātsanātanāt | rakṣārthaṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ viṣṇutvamupajagmivān || 7.104.9 ||

"Then you too, from that unassailable eternal state of being, assumed the form of Vishnu for the protection of all creatures."

Shloka 10 (uttara.104.10)

अदित्यां वीर्यवान्पुत्रो भ्रातऽणां वीर्यवर्धनः । समुत्पन्नेषु कृत्येषु तेषां साह्याय कल्पसे ।। ७.१०४.१० ।।

adityāṃ vīryavānputro bhrāta'ṇāṃ vīryavardhanaḥ | samutpanneṣu kṛtyeṣu teṣāṃ sāhyāya kalpase || 7.104.10 ||

"As the mighty son born to Aditi, the strengthener of your brothers' valor, you become their helper whenever tasks arise."

Shloka 11 (uttara.104.11)

स त्वं वित्रास्यमानासु प्रजासु जगतां वर । रावणस्य वधाकाङ्क्षी मानुषेषु मनो ऽदधाः ।। ७.१०४.११ ।।

sa tvaṃ vitrāsyamānāsu prajāsu jagatāṃ vara | rāvaṇasya vadhākāṅkṣī mānuṣeṣu mano 'dadhāḥ || 7.104.11 ||

"You, O best of the worlds, seeing the people terrified, and desiring the death of Ravana, set your mind upon being born among men."

Shloka 12 (uttara.104.12)

दश वर्षसहस्राणि दश वर्षशतानि च । कृत्वा वासस्य नियतिं स्वयमेवात्मना पुरा ।। ७.१०४.१२ ।।

daśa varṣasahasrāṇi daśa varṣaśatāni ca | kṛtvā vāsasya niyatiṃ svayamevātmanā purā || 7.104.12 ||

"Having yourself, long ago, of your own accord, fixed the term of your sojourn at ten thousand years and ten hundred years -- eleven thousand years..."

Shloka 13 (uttara.104.13)

स त्वं मनोमयः पुत्रः पूर्णायुर्मानुषेष्विह । कालो ऽयं ते नरश्रेष्ठ समीपमुपवर्तितुम् ।। ७.१०४.१३ ।।

sa tvaṃ manomayaḥ putraḥ pūrṇāyurmānuṣeṣviha | kālo 'yaṃ te naraśreṣṭha samīpamupavartitum || 7.104.13 ||

"...you, the mind-born son, having lived out your full life-span here among men -- O best of men, that time has now come near for you."

Shloka 14 (uttara.104.14)

यदि भूयो महाराज प्रजा इच्छस्युपासितुम् । वस वा वीर भद्रं त एवमाह पितामहः ।। ७.१०४.१४ ।।

yadi bhūyo mahārāja prajā icchasyupāsitum | vasa vā vīra bhadraṃ ta evamāha pitāmahaḥ || 7.104.14 ||

"If, great king, you wish still further to watch over your people, then remain, O hero; may good befall you -- thus has the grandsire spoken."

Shloka 15 (uttara.104.15)

अथ वा विजिगीषा ते सुरलोकाय राघव । सनाथा विष्णुना देवा भवन्तु विगतज्वराः ।। ७.१०४.१५ ।।

atha vā vijigīṣā te suralokāya rāghava | sanāthā viṣṇunā devā bhavantu vigatajvarāḥ || 7.104.15 ||

"Or else, Raghava, if your desire is now for conquest of the heavenly world, let the gods, with Vishnu as their lord, be freed from all affliction."

Shloka 16 (uttara.104.16)

श्रुत्वा पितामहेनोक्तं वाक्यं कालसमीरितम् । राघवः प्रहसन्वाक्यं सर्वसंहारमब्रवीत् ।। ७.१०४.१६ ।।

śrutvā pitāmahenoktaṃ vākyaṃ kālasamīritam | rāghavaḥ prahasanvākyaṃ sarvasaṃhāramabravīt || 7.104.16 ||

Hearing this message spoken by the grandsire and delivered through Kala, Raghava smiled and spoke a word concerning the universal dissolution -- his own coming departure.

Shloka 17 (uttara.104.17)

श्रुत्वा मे देवदेवस्य वाक्यं परममद्भुतम् । प्रीतिर्हि महती जाता तवागमनसम्भवा ।। ७.१०४.१७ ।।

śrutvā me devadevasya vākyaṃ paramamadbhutam | prītirhi mahatī jātā tavāgamanasambhavā || 7.104.17 ||

"Having heard this supremely wondrous message of the god of gods, great indeed is the joy that has arisen in me at your coming."

Shloka 18 (uttara.104.18)

त्रयाणामपि लोकानां कार्यार्थं मम सम्भवः । भद्रं ते ऽस्तु गमिष्यामि यत एवाहमागतः ।। ७.१०४.१८ ।।

trayāṇāmapi lokānāṃ kāryārthaṃ mama sambhavaḥ | bhadraṃ te 'stu gamiṣyāmi yata evāhamāgataḥ || 7.104.18 ||

"My birth was for the sake of the task of all three worlds; may good befall you -- I shall go now to that place from which I came."

Shloka 19 (uttara.104.19)

हद्गतो ह्यसि सम्प्राप्तो न मे तत्र विचारणा । मया हि सर्वकृत्येषु देवानां वशवर्तिनाम् । स्थातव्यं सर्वसंहार यथा ह्याह पितामहः ।। ७.१०४.१९ ।।

hadgato hyasi samprāpto na me tatra vicāraṇā | mayā hi sarvakṛtyeṣu devānāṃ vaśavartinām | sthātavyaṃ sarvasaṃhāra yathā hyāha pitāmahaḥ || 7.104.19 ||

"You have truly entered my heart and arrived there; I have no hesitation in this matter. For, O Sarvasamhara, in every task set by the gods who are your servants, I must act as the grandsire himself has commanded."
