The Coming of Durvasa

Shloka 1 (uttara.105.1)

तथा तयोः संवदतोर्दुर्वासा भगवानृषिः । रामस्य दर्शनाकाङ्क्षी राजद्वारमुपागमत् ।। ७.१०५.१ ।।

tathā tayoḥ saṃvadatordurvāsā bhagavānṛṣiḥ | rāmasya darśanākāṅkṣī rājadvāramupāgamat || 7.105.1 ||

While the two of them were thus conversing, the illustrious sage Durvasa, desiring to see Rama, arrived at the gate of the palace.

Shloka 2 (uttara.105.2)

सो ऽभिगम्य तु सौमित्रिमुवाच ऋषिसत्तमः । रामं दर्शय मे शीघ्रं पुरा मे ऽर्थो ऽतिवर्तते ।। ७.१०५.२ ।।

so 'bhigamya tu saumitrimuvāca ṛṣisattamaḥ | rāmaṃ darśaya me śīghraṃ purā me 'rtho 'tivartate || 7.105.2 ||

That best of sages approached Saumitri and said: "Quickly let me see Rama; my purpose is urgent and passing beyond delay."

Shloka 3 (uttara.105.3)

मुनेस्तु भाषितं श्रुत्वा लक्ष्मणः परवीरहा । अभिवाद्य महात्मानं वाक्यमेतदुवाच ह ।। ७.१०५.३ ।।

munestu bhāṣitaṃ śrutvā lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā | abhivādya mahātmānaṃ vākyametaduvāca ha || 7.105.3 ||

Hearing the sage's words, Lakshmana, slayer of enemy heroes, bowed to the great soul and spoke these words:

Shloka 4 (uttara.105.4)

किं कार्यं ब्रूहि भगवन्को वा ऽर्थः किं करोम्यहम् । व्यग्रो हि राघवो ब्रह्मन्मुहूर्तं प्रतिपाल्यताम् ।। ७.१०५.४ ।।

kiṃ kāryaṃ brūhi bhagavanko vā 'rthaḥ kiṃ karomyaham | vyagro hi rāghavo brahmanmuhūrtaṃ pratipālyatām || 7.105.4 ||

"What is your business, revered one? Tell me what it is -- what may I do? Raghava is occupied just now, O Brahmin; please wait a moment."

Shloka 5 (uttara.105.5)

तच्छ्रुत्वा ऋषिशार्दूलः क्रोधेन कलुषीकृतः । उवाच लक्ष्मणं वाक्यं निर्दहन्निव चक्षुषा ।। ७.१०५.५ ।।

tacchrutvā ṛṣiśārdūlaḥ krodhena kaluṣīkṛtaḥ | uvāca lakṣmaṇaṃ vākyaṃ nirdahanniva cakṣuṣā || 7.105.5 ||

Hearing this, that tiger among sages, clouded with anger, spoke to Lakshmana, seeming to burn him with his very glance:

Shloka 6 (uttara.105.6)

अस्मिन्क्षणे मां सौमित्रे रामाय प्रतिवेदय । अस्मिन्क्षणे मां सौमित्रे न निवेदयसे यदि ।। ७.१०५.६ ।।

asminkṣaṇe māṃ saumitre rāmāya prativedaya | asminkṣaṇe māṃ saumitre na nivedayase yadi || 7.105.6 ||

"This very instant, Saumitri, announce me to Rama. If, Saumitri, you do not announce me this very instant..."

Shloka 7 (uttara.105.7)

विषयं त्वां पुरं चैव शपिष्ये राघवं तथा । भरतं चैव सौमित्रे युष्माकं या च सन्ततिः ।। ७.१०५.७ ।।

viṣayaṃ tvāṃ puraṃ caiva śapiṣye rāghavaṃ tathā | bharataṃ caiva saumitre yuṣmākaṃ yā ca santatiḥ || 7.105.7 ||

"...then I shall curse your kingdom and this city, and Raghava too, and Bharata, Saumitri, and your entire lineage as well."

Shloka 8 (uttara.105.8)

न हि शक्ष्याम्यहं भूयो मन्युं धारयितुं हृदि । तच्छ्रुत्वा घोरसङ्काशं वाक्यं तस्य महात्मनः । चिन्तयामास मनसा तस्य वाक्यस्य निश्चयम् ।। ७.१०५.८ ।।

na hi śakṣyāmyahaṃ bhūyo manyuṃ dhārayituṃ hṛdi | tacchrutvā ghorasaṅkāśaṃ vākyaṃ tasya mahātmanaḥ | cintayāmāsa manasā tasya vākyasya niścayam || 7.105.8 ||

"For I shall no longer be able to hold back my wrath within my heart." Hearing this terrible pronouncement of that great soul, Lakshmana pondered in his mind the resolve those words demanded.

Shloka 9 (uttara.105.9)

एकस्य मरणं मे ऽस्तु मा भूत्सर्वविनाशनम् । इति बुद्ध्या विनिश्चित्य राघवाय न्यवेदयत् ।। ७.१०५.९ ।।

ekasya maraṇaṃ me 'stu mā bhūtsarvavināśanam | iti buddhyā viniścitya rāghavāya nyavedayat || 7.105.9 ||

"Let death be mine alone; let there not be the destruction of everyone." Having resolved thus with his intellect, he informed Raghava.

Shloka 10 (uttara.105.10)

लक्ष्मणस्य वचः श्रुत्वा रामः कालं विसृज्य च । निस्सृत्य त्वरितं राजा अत्रेः पुत्रं ददर्श ह ।। ७.१०५.१० ।।

lakṣmaṇasya vacaḥ śrutvā rāmaḥ kālaṃ visṛjya ca | nissṛtya tvaritaṃ rājā atreḥ putraṃ dadarśa ha || 7.105.10 ||

Hearing Lakshmana's words, Rama took leave of Kala, and, coming out quickly, the king beheld the son of Atri, Durvasa.

Shloka 11 (uttara.105.11)

सो ऽभिवाद्य महात्मानं ज्वलन्तमिव तेजसा । किं कार्यमिति काकुत्स्थः कृताञ्जलिरभाषत ।। ७.१०५.११ ।।

so 'bhivādya mahātmānaṃ jvalantamiva tejasā | kiṃ kāryamiti kākutsthaḥ kṛtāñjalirabhāṣata || 7.105.11 ||

Bowing to that great soul, who blazed as if with splendor, Kakutstha, with joined palms, asked, "What is your business?"

Shloka 12 (uttara.105.12)

तद्वाक्यं राघवेणोक्तं श्रुत्वा मुनिवरः प्रभुम् । प्रत्याह रामं दुर्वासाः श्रूयतां धर्मवत्सल ।। ७.१०५.१२ ।।

tadvākyaṃ rāghaveṇoktaṃ śrutvā munivaraḥ prabhum | pratyāha rāmaṃ durvāsāḥ śrūyatāṃ dharmavatsala || 7.105.12 ||

Hearing these words spoken by Raghava, that foremost of sages, Durvasa, replied to lord Rama: "Listen, you who cherish righteousness."

Shloka 13 (uttara.105.13)

अद्य वर्षसहस्रस्य समाप्तिस्तपसो मम । सो ऽहं भोजनमिच्छामि यथासिद्धं तवानघ ।। ७.१०५.१३ ।।

adya varṣasahasrasya samāptistapaso mama | so 'haṃ bhojanamicchāmi yathāsiddhaṃ tavānagha || 7.105.13 ||

"Today marks the completion of a thousand years of my penance; so, sinless one, I desire food, whatever is ready in your house."

Shloka 14 (uttara.105.14)

तच्छ्रुत्वा वचनं राजा राघवः प्रीतमानसः । भोजनं मुनिमुख्याय यथासिद्धमुपाहरत् ।। ७.१०५.१४ ।।

tacchrutvā vacanaṃ rājā rāghavaḥ prītamānasaḥ | bhojanaṃ munimukhyāya yathāsiddhamupāharat || 7.105.14 ||

Hearing these words, King Raghava, with a glad heart, brought forth whatever food was ready for that foremost of sages.

Shloka 15 (uttara.105.15)

स तु भुक्त्वा मुनिश्रेष्ठस्तदन्नममृतोपमम् । साधु रामेति सम्भाष्य स्वमाश्रममुपागमत् ।। ७.१०५.१५ ।।

sa tu bhuktvā muniśreṣṭhastadannamamṛtopamam | sādhu rāmeti sambhāṣya svamāśramamupāgamat || 7.105.15 ||

That best of sages, having eaten that food which was like nectar, said, "Well done, Rama," and departed to his own hermitage.

Shloka 16 (uttara.105.16)

तस्मिन् गते मुनिवरे स्वाश्रमं लक्ष्मणाग्रजः । संस्मृत्य कालवाक्यानि ततो दुःखमुपागमत् ।। ७.१०५.१६ ।।

tasmin gate munivare svāśramaṃ lakṣmaṇāgrajaḥ | saṃsmṛtya kālavākyāni tato duḥkhamupāgamat || 7.105.16 ||

When that great sage had gone to his own hermitage, Lakshmana's elder brother, recalling the words of Kala, fell into sorrow.

Shloka 17 (uttara.105.17)

दुःखेन च सुसन्तप्तः स्मृत्वा तद्घोरदर्शनम् । अवाङ्मुखो दीनमना व्याहर्तुं न शशाक ह ।। ७.१०५.१७ ।।

duḥkhena ca susantaptaḥ smṛtvā tadghoradarśanam | avāṅmukho dīnamanā vyāhartuṃ na śaśāka ha || 7.105.17 ||

Deeply tormented with grief, recalling that terrible vow, he sat with face bowed down, his mind wretched, unable even to speak.

Shloka 18 (uttara.105.18)

ततो बुद्ध्या विनिश्चित्य कालवाक्यानि राघवः । नैतदस्तीति निश्चित्य तूष्णीमासीन्महायशाः ।। ७.१०५.१८ ।।

tato buddhyā viniścitya kālavākyāni rāghavaḥ | naitadastīti niścitya tūṣṇīmāsīnmahāyaśāḥ || 7.105.18 ||

Then Raghava, pondering the words of Kala with his intellect, and concluding, "This is nothing to grieve over," the greatly renowned one fell silent.
