Uttara Kanda · Sarga 27
The Slaying of Sumali
Shloka 1 (uttara.27.1)
kailāsaṃ laṅghayitvātha daśagrīvaḥ sa rāvaṇaḥ| āsasāda mahātejā indralokaṃ niśācaraḥ || 27.1 ||
Then, having crossed over Kailasa, that ten-necked Ravana, the mighty night-roaming demon, reached the realm of Indra.
Shloka 2 (uttara.27.2)
tasya rākṣasasainyasya samantādupayāsyataḥ| devalokaṃ yayau śabdo mathyamānārṇavopamaḥ || 27.2 ||
As his rakshasa army advanced from every side, a sound like a churning ocean rose up and reached the world of the gods.
Shloka 3 (uttara.27.3)
śrutvā tu rāvaṇaṃ prāptamindraścalita āsanāt| abravīttatra tān devān sarvāneva samāgatān || 27.3 ||
Hearing that Ravana had arrived, Indra started up from his seat, and spoke there to all the assembled gods.
Shloka 4 (uttara.27.4)
ādityānsavasūnrudrānviśvānsādhyānmarudgaṇān| sajjībhavata yuddhārthaṃ rāvaṇasya durātmanaḥ || 27.4 ||
"O Adityas, Vasus, Rudras, Vishvas, Sadhyas, and hosts of Maruts, make yourselves ready for battle against evil-souled Ravana."
Shloka 5 (uttara.27.5)
evamuktāstu śakreṇa devāḥ śakrasamā yudhi| sannahya sumahāsattvā yuddhaśraddhāsamanvitāḥ || 27.5 ||
Thus addressed by Shakra, the gods, each equal to Shakra in battle, of immense might, and eager for the fight, armed themselves.
Shloka 6 (uttara.27.6)
sa tu dīnaḥ paritrasto mahendro rāvaṇaṃ prati| viṣṇoḥ samīpamāgatya vākyametaduvāca ha || 27.6 ||
Yet great Indra, wretched and terrified at the thought of Ravana, went to Vishnu and spoke these words —
Shloka 7 (uttara.27.7)
viṣṇo kathaṃ kariṣyāmi mahāvīryaparākramaḥ| asau hi balavadrakṣo yuddhārthamabhivartate || 27.7 ||
"O Vishnu, what shall I do? This one, of terrible might and prowess, this powerful rakshasa, advances upon us for battle.
Shloka 8 (uttara.27.8)
varapradānādbalavānna khalvanyena hetunā| tattu satyavacaḥ kāryaṃ yaduktaṃ padmayoninā || 27.8 ||
It is by the granting of a boon that he is powerful, by no other cause; and that promise made by the lotus-born (Brahma) must indeed be kept true.
Shloka 9 (uttara.27.9)
tadyathā namucirvṛtro balirnarakaśambarau| tvadbalaṃ samavaṣṭabhya mayā dagdhāstathā kuru || 27.9 ||
Just as Namuchi, Vritra, Bali, Naraka and Shambara were burnt up by me, relying upon your strength — do so again now.
Shloka 10 (uttara.27.10)
nahyanyo devadeveśa tvāmṛte madhusūdana| gatiḥ parāyaṇaṃ nāsti trailokye sacarācare || 27.10 ||
For there is no other refuge or final recourse, O lord of the gods, slayer of Madhu, apart from you, in all the three worlds with their moving and unmoving beings.
Shloka 11 (uttara.27.11)
tvaṃ hi nārāyaṇaḥ śrīmānpadmanābhaḥ sanātanaḥ| tvayeme sthāpitā lokāḥ śakraścāhaṃ sureśvaraḥ || 27.11 ||
For you are Narayana, glorious, lotus-naveled, eternal; by you these worlds were established, and by you I too was made Shakra, lord of the gods.
Shloka 12 (uttara.27.12)
tvayā sṛṣṭamidaṃ sarvaṃ trailokyaṃ sacarācaram| tvāmeva bhagavansarve praviśanti yugakṣaye || 27.12 ||
By you this entire three-worlds, moving and unmoving, was created; and into you alone, O Lord, all beings enter at the dissolution of the age.
Shloka 13 (uttara.27.13)
tadācakṣva yathā tattvaṃ devadeva mama svayam| api cakrasahāyastvaṃ yotsyase rāvaṇaṃ prabho || 27.13 ||
So tell me now yourself, O god of gods, the truth of the matter — will you, my lord, discus in hand, do battle yourself against Ravana?"
Shloka 14 (uttara.27.14)
evamuktaḥ sa śakreṇa devo nārāyaṇaḥ prabhuḥ| abravīnna paritrāsaḥ kartavyaḥ śrūyatāṃ ca me || 27.14 ||
Thus addressed by Shakra, the lord Narayana replied: "No fear need be entertained; hear me out.
Shloka 15 (uttara.27.15)
na tāvadeṣa duṣṭātmā śakyo jetuṃ surāsuraiḥ| hantuṃ cāpi samāsādya varadānena durjayaḥ || 27.15 ||
This wicked-souled one cannot for now be conquered by gods or asuras; even meeting him to slay him is impossible, for by the granted boon he is unconquerable.
Shloka 16 (uttara.27.16)
sarvathā tu mahatkarma kariṣyati balotkaṭaḥ| rākṣasaḥ putrasahito dṛṣṭametannisargataḥ || 27.16 ||
In every way this mighty, arrogant rakshasa, together with his son, will accomplish a great deed — this is seen by nature's own decree.
Shloka 17 (uttara.27.17)
yattu māṃ tvamabhāṣiṣṭha yuddhyasveti sureśvara| nāhaṃ taṃ pratiyotsyāmi rāvaṇaṃ rākṣasaṃ yudhi || 27.17 ||
But as for what you have said to me, O lord of gods, that I should fight — I shall not do battle against that rakshasa Ravana.
Shloka 18 (uttara.27.18)
nāhatvā samare śatruṃ viṣṇuḥ pratinivartate| durlabhaścaiva kāmo 'dya varaguptāddhi rāvaṇāt || 27.18 ||
For Vishnu never turns back from battle without slaying the enemy; and today, victory over Ravana, protected as he is by his boon, is hard to attain.
Shloka 19 (uttara.27.19)
pratijāne ca devendra tvatsamīpe śatakrato| bhavitā 'smi yathā 'syāhaṃ rakṣaso mṛtyukāraṇam || 27.19 ||
But I make this vow before you, O Devendra, O Shatakratu: that I myself shall in time become the cause of this rakshasa's death.
Shloka 20 (uttara.27.20)
ahameva nihantā 'smi rāvaṇaṃ sapuraḥsaram| devatā nandayiṣyāmi jñātvā kālamupāgatam| etatte kathitaṃ tattvaṃ devarāja śacīpate || 27.20 ||
I alone shall be the slayer of Ravana together with his followers; I shall bring joy to the gods, when I know that the time has come. This truth, O king of gods, O lord of Shachi, I have declared to you.
Shloka 21 (uttara.27.21)
yuddhyasva vigatatrāsaḥ sarvaiḥ sārdhaṃ mahābala || 27.21 ||
Fight now, free of fear, O mighty one, together with all the others."
Shloka 22 (uttara.27.22)
tato rudrāḥ sahādityā vasavo maruto 'śvanau| sannaddhā niryayustūrṇaṃ rākṣasānabhitaḥ purāt || 27.22 ||
Then the Rudras with the Adityas, the Vasus, the Maruts and the two Ashvins, all armed, swiftly went forth from the city to face the rakshasas.
Shloka 23 (uttara.27.23)
etasminnantare nādaḥ śuśruve rajanīkṣaye| tasya rāvaṇasainyasya prayuddhasya samantataḥ || 27.23 ||
Meanwhile, as night drew to its end, a great roar was heard on every side, of Ravana's army now engaged in battle.
Shloka 24 (uttara.27.24)
te prayuddhā mahāvīryā hyanyonyamabhivīkṣya vai| saṅgrāmamevābhimukhā hyabhavartanta hṛṣṭavat || 27.24 ||
Those great warriors, beholding one another, engaged in battle, advancing eagerly to face the fight as though rejoicing.
Shloka 25 (uttara.27.25)
tato daivatasainyanāṃ saṅkṣobhaḥ samajāyata| tadakṣayaṃ mahāsainyaṃ dṛṣṭvā samaramūrdhani || 27.25 ||
Then a great commotion arose among the army of the gods, on seeing that inexhaustible host at the very front of battle.
Shloka 26 (uttara.27.26)
tato yuddhaṃ samabhaveddevadānavarakṣasām| ghoraṃ tumulanirhrādaṃ nānāpraharaṇodyatam || 27.26 ||
Then a battle broke out between the gods, danavas and rakshasas, terrible and tumultuous with its uproar, waged with weapons of every kind.
Shloka 27 (uttara.27.27)
etasminnantare śūrā rākṣasā ghoradarśanāḥ| yuddhārthaṃ samavartanta sacivā rāvaṇasya te || 27.27 ||
Meanwhile those valiant, terrible-looking rakshasas, the ministers of Ravana, advanced together for battle.
Shloka 28 (uttara.27.28)
mārīcaśca prahastaśca mahāpārśvamahodarau| akampano nikumbhaśca śukaḥ sāraṇa eva ca || 27.28 ||
Maricha, Prahasta, Mahaparshva and Mahodara, Akampana, Nikumbha, Shuka and Sarana too,
Shloka 29 (uttara.27.29)
saṃhlādo dhūmaketuśca mahādaṃṣṭro ghaṭodaraḥ| jambumālī mahāhrādo virūpākṣaśca rākṣasaḥ || 27.29 ||
Samhlada, Dhumaketu, Mahadamshtra, Ghatodara, Jambumali, Mahahrada, and the rakshasa Virupaksha,
Shloka 30 (uttara.27.30)
suptaghno yajñakopaśca durmukho dūṣaṇaḥ kharaḥ| triśirāḥ karavīrākṣaḥ sūryaśatruśca rākṣasaḥ || 27.30 ||
Suptaghna, Yajnakopa, Durmukha, Dushana, Khara, Trishiras, Karaviraksha, and the rakshasa Suryashatru,
Shloka 31 (uttara.27.31)
mahākāyo 'tikāyaśca devāntakanarāntakau| etaiḥ sarvaiḥ parivṛto mahāvīryo mahābalaḥ || 27.31 ||
Mahakaya, Atikaya, and Devantaka and Narantaka — surrounded by all these, the mighty and immensely powerful...
Shloka 32 (uttara.27.32)
rāvaṇasyāryakaḥ sainyaṃ sumālī praviveśa ha| sa daivatagaṇānsarvānnānāpraharaṇaiḥ śitaiḥ| vyadhvaṃsayatsusaṅkruddho vāyurjaladharāniva || 27.32 ||
...Sumali, Ravana's grandsire, entered the army; and, fiercely enraged, he scattered all the hosts of gods with weapons of every kind, sharpened for battle, as the wind scatters the clouds.
Shloka 33 (uttara.27.33)
taddaivatabalaṃ rāma hanyamānaṃ niśācaraiḥ| praṇunnaṃ sarvato digbhyaḥ siṃhanunnā mṛgā iva || 27.33 ||
That army of the gods, O Rama, struck down by the night-roamers, was driven back on every side, like deer driven off by a lion.
Shloka 34 (uttara.27.34)
etasminnantare śūro vasūnāmaṣṭamo vasuḥ| sāvitra iti vikhyātaḥ praviveśa raṇājiram || 27.34 ||
Meanwhile, the valiant eighth of the Vasus, known as Savitra, entered the field of battle.
Shloka 35 (uttara.27.35)
tathādityau mahāvīryau tvaṣṭā pūṣā ca daṃśitau| nirbhayau saha sainyena tadā prāviśatāṃ raṇe || 27.35 ||
And then too the two mighty Adityas, Tvashtar and Pushan, both clad in armour, fearless, entered the battle together with their forces.
Shloka 36 (uttara.27.36)
tato yuddhaṃ samabhavatsurāṇāṃ saha rākṣasaiḥ| kruddhānāṃ rakṣasāṃ kīrtiṃ samareṣvanivartinām || 27.36 ||
Then battle broke out between the gods and the rakshasas — a battle worthy of the fame of those enraged rakshasas who never turned back in combat.
Shloka 37 (uttara.27.37)
tataste rākṣasāḥ sarve vibudhānsamare sthitān| nānāpraharaṇairghorairjaghnuḥ śatasahasraśaḥ || 27.37 ||
Then all those rakshasas struck down the gods standing in battle, by the hundred-thousand, with terrible weapons of every kind.
Shloka 38 (uttara.27.38)
devāśca rākṣasānghorānmahābalaparākramān| samare vimalaiḥ śastrairupaninyuryamakṣayam || 27.38 ||
And the gods too, with their bright weapons, sent those terrible rakshasas of immense strength and prowess to the abode of Yama in that battle.
Shloka 39 (uttara.27.39)
etasminnantare rāma sumālī nāma rākṣasaḥ| nānāpraharaṇaiḥ kruddhastatsainyaṃ so 'bhyavartata || 27.39 ||
Meanwhile, O Rama, the rakshasa named Sumali, enraged, bearing weapons of every kind, advanced upon that army.
Shloka 40 (uttara.27.40)
sa daivatabalaṃ sarvaṃ nānāprahaṇaiḥ śitaiḥ| vyadhvaṃsayata saṅkruddho vāyurjaladharaṃ yathā || 27.40 ||
He, in his fury, scattered the entire army of the gods with sharp weapons of every kind, as the wind scatters a cloud.
Shloka 41 (uttara.27.41)
Struck by his great showers of arrows and by fearsome spears and lances, all the gods could no longer hold their ranks together.
Shloka 42 (uttara.27.42)
tato vidrāvyamāṇeṣu daivateṣu sumālinā| vasūnāmaṣṭamaḥ kruddhaḥ sāvitro vai vyavasthitaḥ || 27.42 ||
Then, as the gods were being routed by Sumali, the eighth of the Vasus, Savitra, enraged, stood firm.
Shloka 43 (uttara.27.43)
saṃvṛtaḥ svairathānīkaiḥ praharantaṃ niśācaram| vikrameṇa mahātejā vārayāmāsa saṃyuge || 27.43 ||
Surrounded by his own troops of chariots, the greatly radiant one, by his valour, checked the striking night-roamer in that combat.
Shloka 44 (uttara.27.44)
tatastayormahāyuddhamabhavadromaharṣaṇam || 27.44 ||
Then a great battle broke out between the two of them, one that made the very hair stand on end.
Shloka 45 (uttara.27.45)
sumālino vasoścaiva samareṣvanivartinoḥ| tatastasya mahābāṇairvasunā sumahātmanā| nihataḥ pannagarathaḥ kṣaṇena vinipātitaḥ || 27.45 ||
—between Sumali and the Vasu, both of whom never retreated in battle. Then, by the great arrows of that noble Vasu, Sumali's serpent-drawn chariot was struck and, in an instant, brought crashing down.
Shloka 46 (uttara.27.46)
hatvā tu saṃyuge tasya rathaṃ bāṇaśataiścitam| gadāṃ tasya vadhārthāya vasurjagrāha pāṇinā || 27.46 ||
Having thus struck down his chariot in battle, pierced with hundreds of arrows, the Vasu then took up his mace in hand, to slay him.
Shloka 47 (uttara.27.47)
tataḥ pragṛhya dīptāgrāṃ kāladaṇḍopamāṃ gadām| tāṃ mūrdhni pātayāmāsa sāvitro vai sumālinaḥ || 27.47 ||
Then, seizing that blazing-tipped mace, like the very staff of death, Savitra brought it down upon the head of Sumali.
Shloka 48 (uttara.27.48)
sā tasyopari colkābhā patantīva babhau gadā| indrapramuktā garjantī girāviva mahāśaniḥ || 27.48 ||
That mace, falling upon him like a blazing meteor, shone forth — like the great thunderbolt hurled roaring by Indra upon a mountain.
Shloka 49 (uttara.27.49)
tasya naivāsthi na śiro na māṃsaṃ dadṛśe tadā| gadayā bhasmatāṃ nītaṃ nihatasya raṇājire || 27.49 ||
Of him then, neither bone nor head nor flesh could any longer be seen — struck down by that mace in the field of battle, he was reduced to ashes.
Shloka 50 (uttara.27.50)
taṃ dṛṣṭvā nihataṃ saṅkhye rākṣasāste samantataḥ| vyadravansahitāḥ sarve krośamānāḥ parasparam| vidrāvyamāṇā vasunā rākṣasā nāvatasthire || 27.50 ||
Seeing him slain in that combat, those rakshasas, on every side, all fled together, crying out to one another; routed by the Vasu, the rakshasas could no longer hold their ground.
