Ravana Faces Indra
Shloka 1 (uttara.28.1)
sumālinaṃ hataṃ dṛṣṭvā vasunā bhasmasātkṛtam| svasainyaṃ vidrutaṃ cāpi lakṣayitvā 'rditaṃ suraiḥ || 28.1 ||
Seeing Sumali slain, reduced to ashes by the Vasu, and beholding his own army routed and harried by the gods,
Shloka 2 (uttara.28.2)
tataḥ sa balavānkruddho rāvaṇasya sutastadā| nivartya rākṣasānsarvānmeghanādo vyavasthitaḥ || 28.2 ||
then that mighty, enraged son of Ravana, Meghanada, rallying all the rakshasas, took his stand.
Shloka 3 (uttara.28.3)
surathenāgnivarṇena kāmagena mahārathaḥ| abhidudrāva senāṃ tāṃ vanānyagniriva jvalan || 28.3 ||
That great warrior charged upon that army in his fine chariot, fire-hued and swift as thought, like a blazing fire rushing through forests.
Shloka 4 (uttara.28.4)
tataḥ praviśatastasya vividhāyudhadhāriṇaḥ| vidudruvurdiśaḥ sarvā darśanādeva devatāḥ || 28.4 ||
As he advanced, bearing weapons of every kind, the gods fled in every direction at the very sight of him.
Shloka 5 (uttara.28.5)
na babhūva tadā kaścidyuyutsorasya sammukhe| sarvānāviddhya vitrastāṃstataḥ śakro 'bravītsurān || 28.5 ||
There was then no one willing to face him who wished to fight; seeing all the gods struck with terror and fleeing, Shakra spoke to them —
Shloka 6 (uttara.28.6)
na bhetavyaṃ na gantavyaṃ nivartadhvaṃ raṇe surāḥ| eṣa gacchati putro me yuddhārthamaparājitaḥ || 28.6 ||
"There is no need for fear, no need to flee; turn back to the battle, O gods! This is my own son advancing, unconquered, for the fight."
Shloka 7 (uttara.28.7)
tataḥ śakrasuto devo jayanta iti viśrutaḥ| rathenādbhutakalpena saṅgrāme so 'bhyavartata || 28.7 ||
Then Shakra's son, the god known as Jayanta, advanced into that battle in his wondrous chariot.
Shloka 8 (uttara.28.8)
tataste tridaśāḥ sarve parivārya śacīsutam| rāvaṇasya sutaṃ yuddhe samāsādya prajaghnire || 28.8 ||
Then all the gods, surrounding Shachi's son, engaged Ravana's son in battle and began to strike at him.
Shloka 9 (uttara.28.9)
teṣāṃ yuddhaṃ samabhavatsadṛśaṃ devarakṣasām| mahendrasya ca putrasya rākṣasendrasutasya ca || 28.9 ||
A battle broke out between them, fitting for gods and rakshasas alike — between great Indra's son and the son of the lord of rakshasas.
Shloka 10 (uttara.28.10)
tato mātaliputre tu gomukhe rākṣasātmajaḥ| sārathau pātayāmāsa śarānkanakabhūṣaṇān || 28.10 ||
Then that son of the rakshasa (Ravani) loosed gold-adorned arrows upon Gomukha, the son of Matali, who was serving as charioteer.
Shloka 11 (uttara.28.11)
śacīsutaścāpi tathā jayantastasya sārathim| taṃ cāpi rāvaṇiḥ kruddhaḥ samantātpratyavidhyata || 28.11 ||
And Jayanta, Shachi's son, likewise struck at his charioteer; the enraged son of Ravana then pierced him from every side in return.
Shloka 12 (uttara.28.12)
sa hi krodhasamāviṣṭo balī visphāritekṣaṇaḥ| rāvaṇiḥ śakratanayaṃ śaravarṣairavākirat || 28.12 ||
For that mighty son of Ravana, filled with rage, his eyes wide with fury, showered arrows upon Shakra's son.
Shloka 13 (uttara.28.13)
tato nānāpraharaṇāñchitadhārānsahasraśaḥ| pātayāmāsa saṅkruddhaḥ surasainyeṣu rāvaṇiḥ || 28.13 ||
Then, enraged, Ravani rained down weapons of every kind, with sharpened edges, by the thousand, upon the armies of the gods.
Shloka 14 (uttara.28.14)
śataghnīmusalaprāsagadākhaḍgaparaśvadhān| mahānti giriśṛṅgāṇi pātayāmāsa rāvaṇiḥ || 28.14 ||
Ravani hurled down shataghnis, clubs, javelins, maces, swords and axes, and huge mountain peaks as well.
Shloka 15 (uttara.28.15)
tataḥ pravyathitā lokāḥ sañjajñe ca tamo 'bhavat| tasya rāvaṇaputrasya śatrusainyāni nighnataḥ || 28.15 ||
Then the worlds were thrown into terror, and darkness fell, as that son of Ravana struck down the enemy hosts.
Shloka 16 (uttara.28.16)
tatastaddaivatabalaṃ samantāttaṃ śacīsutam| bahuprakāramasvasthamabhavaccharapīḍitam || 28.16 ||
Then that army of the gods, all around Shachi's son, pierced by his arrows, was thrown into disorder of every kind.
Shloka 17 (uttara.28.17)
nābhyajānanta cānyonyaṃ rakṣo vā devatā 'thavā| tatra tatra viparyastaṃ samantātparidhāvati || 28.17 ||
None could any longer tell apart the other — whether rakshasa or god; in utter confusion, all ran about here and there on every side.
Shloka 18 (uttara.28.18)
devā devānnijaghnuste rākṣasānrākṣasāstathā| sammūḍhāstamasācchannā vyadravannapare tathā || 28.18 ||
The gods struck down other gods, and rakshasas struck down other rakshasas; utterly bewildered, shrouded in darkness, others simply fled.
Shloka 19 (uttara.28.19)
etasminnantare vīraḥ pulomā nāma vīryavān| daityendrastena saṅgṛhya śacīputro 'pavāhitaḥ || 28.19 ||
Meanwhile, the valiant lord of the daityas named Puloma, mighty in strength, seized hold of Shachi's son and carried him off.
Shloka 20 (uttara.28.20)
saṅgṛhya taṃ tu dauhitraṃ praviṣṭaḥ sāgaraṃ tadā| āryakaḥ sa hi tasyāsītpulomā yena sā śacī || 28.20 ||
Having seized his own daughter's son, he then entered the ocean; for that Puloma was Jayanta's own grandfather — the very father of Shachi.
Shloka 21 (uttara.28.21)
jñātvā praṇāśaṃ tu tadā jayantasyātha devatāḥ| aprahṛṣṭāstataḥ sarvā vyathitāḥ sampradudruvuḥ || 28.21 ||
Learning then that Jayanta was seemingly lost, the gods, all dismayed and stricken with grief, fled in every direction.
Shloka 22 (uttara.28.22)
rāvaṇistvatha saṅkruddho balaiḥ parivṛtaḥ svakaiḥ| abhyadhāvata devāṃstānmumoca ca mahāsvanam || 28.22 ||
Then Ravani, enraged, surrounded by his own forces, charged upon those gods and let out a mighty roar.
Shloka 23 (uttara.28.23)
dṛṣṭvā praṇāśaṃ putrasya daivateṣu ca vidrutam| mātaliṃ cāha deveśo rathaḥ samupanīyatām || 28.23 ||
Seeing his son apparently lost, and the gods in rout, the lord of the gods said to Matali: "Let my chariot be brought up."
Shloka 24 (uttara.28.24)
sa tu divyo mahābhīmaḥ sajja eva mahārathaḥ| upasthito mātalinā vāhyamāno mahājavaḥ || 28.24 ||
That divine, immensely awesome, and mighty chariot, already prepared, was then brought forward by Matali, driven at tremendous speed.
Shloka 25 (uttara.28.25)
tato meghā rathe tasmiṃstaḍittvanto mahābalāḥ| agrato vāyucapalā neduḥ paramaniḥsvanāḥ || 28.25 ||
Then, around that chariot, mighty clouds charged with lightning, swift as the wind, roared out ahead of it with the deepest thunder.
Shloka 26 (uttara.28.26)
nānāvādyāni vādyanta gandharvāśca samāhitāḥ| nanṛtuścāpsaraḥsaṅghā niryāte tridaśeśvare || 28.26 ||
Instruments of every kind resounded, gandharvas played with rapt attention, and throngs of apsaras danced, as the lord of the gods went forth.
Shloka 27 (uttara.28.27)
rudrairvasubhirādityaissādhyaiśca samarudgaṇaiḥ| vṛto nānāpraharaṇairniryayau tridaśādhipaḥ || 28.27 ||
Surrounded by the Rudras, Vasus, Adityas, Sadhyas and the host of Maruts, all bearing weapons of every kind, the lord of the gods set forth.
Shloka 28 (uttara.28.28)
nirgacchatastu śakrasya paruṣaṃ pavano vavau| bhāskaro niṣprabhaścāsīnmaholkāśca prapedire || 28.28 ||
As Shakra set out, a harsh wind blew, the sun lost its brilliance, and great meteors fell.
Shloka 29 (uttara.28.29)
etasminnantare śūro daśagrīvaḥ pratāpavān| āruroha rathaṃ divyaṃ nirmitaṃ viśvakarmaṇā || 28.29 ||
Meanwhile, the valiant and mighty ten-necked Ravana mounted his divine chariot, fashioned by Vishvakarma.
Shloka 30 (uttara.28.30)
pannagaiḥ sumahākāryairveṣṭitaṃ romaharṣaṇaiḥ| teṣāṃ niḥśvāsavātena pradīptamiva saṃyuge || 28.30 ||
It was wrapped about with huge, hair-raising serpents, and, from the breath of their hissing, seemed ablaze in that battle.
Shloka 31 (uttara.28.31)
daityairniśācaraiścaiva sa rathaḥ parivāritaḥ| samarābhimukho daityo mahendraṃ so 'bhyavartata || 28.31 ||
That chariot, surrounded by daityas and night-roamers alike, that mighty lord, facing toward battle, advanced upon Mahendra.
Shloka 32 (uttara.28.32)
putraṃ taṃ vārayitvā tu svayameva vyavasthitaḥ| so 'pi yuddhādviniṣkramya rāvaṇiḥ samupāviśat || 28.32 ||
Restraining his own son, he himself took the field; and Ravani too, withdrawing from the fight, sat down.
Shloka 33 (uttara.28.33)
tato yuddhaṃ pravṛttaṃ tu surāṇāṃ rākṣasaiḥ saha| śastrāṇi varṣatāṃ ghoraṃ meghānāmiva saṃyuge || 28.33 ||
Then battle resumed between the gods and the rakshasas, terrible, weapons raining down as thick as clouds in that combat.
Shloka 34 (uttara.28.34)
kumbhakarṇastu duṣṭātmā nānāpraharaṇodyataḥ| nājñāyata tadā yuddhe saha kenāpyayudhyata || 28.34 ||
Wicked-souled Kumbhakarna, poised with weapons of every kind, could not even be told with whom he was fighting in that battle.
Shloka 35 (uttara.28.35)
dantairbhujābhyāṃ padbhyāṃ ca śaktitomarasāyakaiḥ| yena kenaiva saṃrabdhastāḍayāmāsa vai surān || 28.35 ||
With his teeth, with both arms, with his feet, and with javelins, lances and arrows — with whatever came to hand — he furiously struck at the gods.
Shloka 36 (uttara.28.36)
tato rudrairmahāghoraiḥ saṅgamyātha niśācaraḥ| prayuddhastaiśca saṅgrāme kṣataḥ śastrairnirantaram || 28.36 ||
Then, engaged by the fearsome Rudras, that night-roamer, fighting against them in the battle, was wounded continuously by their weapons.
Shloka 37 (uttara.28.37)
babhau śastrācitatanuḥ kumbhakarṇaḥ kṣarannasṛk| vidyutstanitanirghoṣo dhāravāniva toyadaḥ || 28.37 ||
Kumbhakarna, his body studded with weapons, blood streaming from him, shone like a rain-cloud pouring down, roaring with thunder and lightning.
Shloka 38 (uttara.28.38)
tatastadrākṣasaṃ sainyaṃ prayuddhaṃ samarudgaṇaiḥ| raṇe vidrāvitaṃ sarvaṃ nānāpraharaṇaiḥ śitaiḥ || 28.38 ||
Then that army of rakshasas, engaged in battle with the Maruts and their host, was entirely routed in that combat by sharp weapons of every kind.
Shloka 39 (uttara.28.39)
kecidvinihatāḥ kṛttāśceṣṭanti sma mahītale| vāhaneṣvavasaktāśca sthitā evāpare raṇe || 28.39 ||
Some, struck down and cut to pieces, still writhed upon the ground; others, still clinging to their mounts, remained standing in the battle.
Shloka 40 (uttara.28.40)
rathānnāgānkharānuṣṭrānpannagāṃsturagān raṇe| śiṃśumārānvarāhāṃśca piśācavadanāntathā || 28.40 ||
Chariots, elephants, donkeys, camels, serpents, horses in that battle, and crocodile-like and boar-faced and demon-faced creatures —
Shloka 41 (uttara.28.41)
tānsamāliṅgya bāhubhyāṃ viṣṭabdhāḥ keciducchrutāḥ| devaistu śastrasambhinnā mamrire ca niśācarāḥ || 28.41 ||
some night-roamers, pierced through by the weapons of the gods, died still clinging to these with both arms, propped up, thrown upward.
Shloka 42 (uttara.28.42)
citrakarma ivābhāti sa teṣāṃ raṇasamplavaḥ| nihatānāṃ pramattānāṃ rākṣasānāṃ mahītale || 28.42 ||
That chaotic tangle of battle, of those slain, frenzied rakshasas strewn upon the ground, shone forth like some strange painted tableau.
Shloka 43 (uttara.28.43)
śoṇitodakaniṣpandakaṅkagṛdhrasamākulā| pravṛttā saṃyugamukhe śastragrāhavatī nadī || 28.43 ||
At the very front of that battle there flowed a river, its water blood, thronged with kankas and vultures, its crocodiles made of weapons.
Shloka 44 (uttara.28.44)
etasminnantare kruddho daśagrīvaḥ pratāpavān| nirīkṣya tadbalaṃ kṛtsnaṃ daivatairvinipātitam || 28.44 ||
Meanwhile, enraged, the mighty ten-necked one, beholding his entire army struck down by the gods,
Shloka 45 (uttara.28.45)
sa taṃ prati vigāhyāśu pravṛddhaṃ sainyasāgaram| tridaśānsamare nighnañchakramevābhyavartata || 28.45 ||
swiftly plunged into that surging ocean of the enemy host, and, slaying the gods in that battle, advanced straight upon Shakra.
Shloka 46 (uttara.28.46)
āgācchakro mahaccāpaṃ visphārya sumahāsvanam| yasya visphāraghoṣeṇa stananti sma diśo daśa || 28.46 ||
Shakra advanced, drawing his great bow with a mighty twang, the sound of whose drawing made the ten directions themselves resound.
Shloka 47 (uttara.28.47)
tadvikṛṣya mahaccāpamindro rāvaṇamūrdhani| nipātayāmāsa śarānpāvakādityavarcasaḥ || 28.47 ||
Drawing that great bow, Indra loosed arrows, bright as fire and the sun, down upon Ravana's head.
Shloka 48 (uttara.28.48)
tathaiva ca mahābāhurdaśagrīvo vyavasthitaḥ| śakraṃ kārmukavibhraṣṭaiḥ śaravarṣairavākirat || 28.48 ||
And likewise, mighty-armed ten-necked Ravana, standing firm, showered Shakra in turn with a rain of arrows loosed from his own bow.
Shloka 49 (uttara.28.49)
prayudhyatoratha tayorbāṇavarṣaiḥ samantataḥ| na jñāyate tadā kiñcitsarvaṃ hi tamasā vṛtam || 28.49 ||
As the two of them fought on, amid showers of arrows on every side, nothing at all could be discerned — everything was shrouded in darkness.
