Then Rama, with joined palms and humility, asked that sage of the southern hermitage these meaningful words —

'Then, having penetrated the city of Lanka and Ravana's inner apartments, he saw Sita, spoke with her, and comforted her.'

Shloka 6 (uttara.35.6)

'And when, freed once more from his bonds, he had spoken with the ten-headed one, by him was Lanka burnt to ashes, as the earth might be burnt by fire.'

Shloka 8 (uttara.35.8)

na kālasya na śakrasya na viṣṇorvittapasya ca | karmāṇi tāni śrūyante yāni yuddhe hanūmataḥ || 35.8 ||

'Not of Death himself, not of Shakra, not of Vishnu, nor of the lord of wealth — such deeds are never heard of, as those of Hanuman in battle.'

Shloka 9 (uttara.35.9)

kimarthaṃ vālyanenaiva sugrīvapriyakāmyayā | tadā vaire samutpanne na dagdho vīrudho yathā || 35.11 ||

'Why is it that, when the enmity first arose out of his desire to please Sugriva, this very Hanuman was not consumed by Vali, as a creeper might be consumed?'

Shloka 12 (uttara.35.12)

rāghavasya vacaḥ śrutvā hetuyuktamṛṣistadā | hanūmataḥ samakṣaṃ tamidaṃ vacanamabravīt || 35.14 ||

Having heard Raghava's reasoned words, the sage then, in Hanuman's very presence, spoke these words to him —

Shloka 15 (uttara.35.15)

satyametadraghuśreṣṭha yadbravīṣi hanūmataḥ | na bale vidyate tulyo na gatau na matau paraḥ || 35.15 ||

'True indeed is this, O best of the Raghus, that which you say of Hanuman — none is his equal in strength, none surpasses him in speed or in wisdom.'

Shloka 16 (uttara.35.16)

'His wife was renowned by the name Anjana; in her the Wind-god begot his own excellent son.'

Shloka 21 (uttara.35.21)

śāliśūkanibhābhāsaṃ prāsūtāmuṃ tadā 'ñjanā | phalānyāhartukāmā vai niṣkrāntā gahanecarā || 35.21 ||

'Anjana gave birth to this child, radiant as the awn of a rice-grain; then, desiring to gather fruits, she who roved the forest went out.'

Shloka 22 (uttara.35.22)

eṣa māturviyogācca kṣudhayā ca bhṛśārditaḥ | ruroda śiśuratyarthaṃ śiśuḥ śaravaṇe yathā || 35.22 ||

'This child, tormented both by separation from his mother and by hunger, wept exceedingly, as the infant Kartikeya once wept in the reed-thicket.'

Shloka 23 (uttara.35.23)

tadodyantaṃ vivasvantaṃ japāpuṣpotkaropamam | dadarśa phalalobhācca hyutpapāta raviṃ prati || 35.23 ||

'Then he saw the rising sun, red as a mass of hibiscus flowers, and out of greed for what he took to be a fruit, leapt up toward it.'

Shloka 24 (uttara.35.24)

bālārkābhimukho bālo bālārka iva mūrtimān | grahītukāmo bālārkaṃ plavate 'mbaramadhyagaḥ || 35.24 ||

'That child, facing the young morning sun, himself like the young sun given form, leapt through the midst of the sky, wishing to seize it.'

Shloka 25 (uttara.35.25)

etasminplavamāne tu śiśubhāve hanūmati | devadānavayakṣāṇāṃ vismayaḥ sumahānabhūt || 35.25 ||

'As this Hanuman, still an infant, leapt on through the sky, the astonishment of gods, danavas and yakshas was very great.'

Shloka 26 (uttara.35.26)

nāpyevaṃ vegavānvāyurgaruḍo vā manastathā | yathā 'yaṃ vāyuputrastu kramate 'mbaramuttamam || 35.26 ||

'Not the wind itself, so swift, nor Garuda, nor even the mind, moves as this son of the Wind moved through the high heavens.'

Shloka 27 (uttara.35.27)

yadi tāvacchiśorasya tvīdṛśo gativikramaḥ | yauvanaṃ balamāsādya kathaṃ vego bhaviṣyati || 35.27 ||

'If such is the speed and prowess of this mere child, what indeed will his speed become once he attains youth and full strength?'

Shloka 28 (uttara.35.28)

tamanuplavate vāyuḥ plavantaṃ putramātmanaḥ | sūryadāhabhayādrakṣaṃstuṣāracayaśītalaḥ || 35.28 ||

'The Wind-god, cool as a mass of frost, followed close behind his leaping son, protecting him from fear of being burnt by the sun.'

Shloka 29 (uttara.35.29)

bahuyojanasāhasraṃ kramatyeṣa gatombaram | piturbalācca bālyācca bhāskarābhyāśamāgataḥ || 35.29 ||

'He traversed many thousand yojanas of sky, and, through both his father's power and his own childish daring, drew near to the sun.'

Shloka 30 (uttara.35.30)

śiśureṣa tvadoṣajña iti matvā divākaraḥ | kāryaṃ cātra samāyattamityevaṃ na dadāha saḥ || 35.30 ||

'Thinking, "this is but an innocent child," and sensing that some higher purpose was at work here, the maker of the day did not burn him.'

Shloka 31 (uttara.35.31)

yameva divasaṃ hyeṣa grahītuṃ bhāskaraṃ plutaḥ | tameva divasaṃ rāhurjighṛkṣati divākaram || 35.31 ||

'Now, on that very day when this child had leapt to seize the sun, on that same day Rahu too was seeking to seize the day-maker.'

Shloka 32 (uttara.35.32)

anena sa parāmṛṣṭo rāma sūryarathopari | apakrāntastatastrasto rāhuścandrārkamardanaḥ || 35.32 ||

'By him, O Rama, Rahu — that crusher of moon and sun — was seized upon the very chariot of the sun, and, terrified, fled from there.'

Shloka 33 (uttara.35.33)

sa indrabhavanaṃ gatvā saroṣaḥ siṃhikāsutaḥ | abravīdbhrukuṭiṃ kṛtvā devaṃ devagaṇairvṛtam || 35.33 ||

'That son of Simhika, going in fury to Indra's abode, frowning, spoke thus to the god surrounded by his host of deities —'

Shloka 34 (uttara.35.34)

bubhukṣāpanayaṃ dattvā candrārkau mama vāsava | kimidaṃ tattvayā dattamanyasya balavṛtrahan || 35.34 ||

"'You granted me, O Vasava, the moon and sun to remove my hunger — O slayer of Bala and Vritra, what is this, that you have given them to another?'"

Shloka 35 (uttara.35.35)

adyāhaṃ parvakāle tu jighṛkṣuḥ sūryamāgataḥ | athānyo rāhurāsādya jagrāha sahasā ravim || 35.35 ||

"'Today, at the time of the eclipse, I came wishing to seize the sun — but some other Rahu came upon it and suddenly seized the sun himself!'"

Shloka 36 (uttara.35.36)

sa rāhorvacanaṃ śrutvā vāsavaḥ sambhramānvitaḥ | utpapātāsanaṃ hitvā codvahankāñcanīṃ srajam || 35.36 ||

Hearing Rahu's words, Vasava, seized with alarm, sprang up, leaving his throne, wearing his garland of gold.

Shloka 37 (uttara.35.37)

tataḥ kailāsakūṭābhaṃ caturdantaṃ madasravam | śṛṅgāradhāriṇaṃ prāṃśuṃ svarṇaghaṇṭāṭṭahāsinam || 35.37 ||

Then, upon his elephant, white as a peak of Kailasa, four-tusked, streaming with rut, richly caparisoned, tall, its golden bells ringing out like laughter —

Shloka 38 (uttara.35.38)

indraḥ karīndramāruhya rāhuṃ kṛtvā puraḥsaram | prāyādyatrābhavatsūryaḥ sahānena hanūmatā || 35.38 ||

— Indra, mounting it, with Rahu leading the way, set out to where the sun was, together with this Hanuman.

Shloka 39 (uttara.35.39)

athātirabhasenāgādrāhurutsṛjya vāsavam | anena ca sa vai dṛṣṭaḥ pradhāvañchailakūṭavat || 35.39 ||

Then Rahu, leaving Vasava behind, rushed forward with great speed; and Hanuman saw him rushing on, like a mountain peak in motion.

Shloka 40 (uttara.35.40)

tataḥ sūryaṃ samutsṛjya rāhuṃ phalamavekṣya ca | utpapāta punarvyoma grahītuṃ siṃhikāsutam || 35.40 ||

Then, letting go of the sun, and regarding Rahu himself as a fruit, Hanuman leapt up once more into the sky, to seize the son of Simhika.

Shloka 41 (uttara.35.41)

utsṛjyārkamimaṃ rāma pradhāvantaṃ plavaṅgamam | avekṣyaivaṃ parāvṛttya mukhaśeṣaḥ parāṅmukhaḥ || 35.41 ||

Letting go of the sun, O Rama, and glancing back at that monkey rushing toward him, Rahu turned away, only his face still showing as he fled.

Shloka 42 (uttara.35.42)

indramāśaṃsamānastu trātāraṃ siṃhikāsutaḥ | indra indreti saṃtrāsānmuhurmahurabhāṣata || 35.42 ||

The son of Simhika, hoping for Indra as his protector, cried out again and again in terror, 'Indra! Indra!'

Shloka 43 (uttara.35.43)

rāhorvikrośamānasya prāgevālakṣitaṃ svaram | śrutvendrovāca mā bhaiṣīrahamenaṃ niṣūdaye || 35.43 ||

Hearing Rahu's cry — a sound never marked before this — Indra said, 'Fear not, I shall destroy this one.'

Shloka 44 (uttara.35.44)

airāvataṃ tato dṛṣṭvā mahattadidamityapi | phalaṃ matvā hastirājamabhidudrāva mārutiḥ || 35.44 ||

Then, seeing Airavata and thinking, 'this too is a great fruit,' the son of the Wind rushed at that king of elephants.

Shloka 45 (uttara.35.45)

tathāsya dhāvato rūpamairāvatajighṛkṣayā | muhūrtamabhavadghoramindrāgnyoriva bhāsvaram || 35.45 ||

As he rushed on, desiring to seize Airavata, his form for a moment became terrible and blazing, like the very radiance of Indra's own fire.

Shloka 46 (uttara.35.46)

evamādhāvamānaṃ tu nātikruddhaḥ śacīpatiḥ | hastāntādatimuktena kuliśenābhyatāḍayat || 35.46 ||

As he thus rushed on, the lord of Shachi, not overly angered, struck him with the thunderbolt released from his hand.

Shloka 47 (uttara.35.47)

tato girau papātaiṣa indravajrābhitāḍitaḥ | patamānasya caitasya vāmo hanurabhajyata || 35.47 ||

Struck by Indra's thunderbolt, he then fell upon a mountain; and as he fell, his left jaw was broken.

Shloka 48 (uttara.35.48)

tasmiṃstu patite bāle vajratāḍanavihvale | cukrodhendrāya pavanaḥ prajānāmahitāya saḥ || 35.48 ||

When that child had fallen, stunned by the blow of the thunderbolt, the Wind-god grew furious at Indra, to the harm of all creatures.

Shloka 49 (uttara.35.49)

pracāraṃ sa tu saṅgṛhya prajāsvantargataḥ prabhuḥ | guhāṃ praviṣṭaḥ svasutaṃ śiśumādāya mārutaḥ || 35.49 ||

Withdrawing his motion from within all creatures, that lord Maruta, taking up his infant son, entered a mountain cave.

Shloka 50 (uttara.35.50)

viṇmūtrāśayamāvṛtya prajānāṃ paramārtikṛt | rurodha sarvabhūtāni yathā varṣāṇi vāsavaḥ || 35.50 ||

Blocking up even the passage of excrement and urine in all beings, causing them the utmost distress, he restrained all creatures' breath, as Vasava might withhold the rains.

Shloka 51 (uttara.35.51)

vāyuprakopādbhūtāni nirucchvāsāni sarvataḥ | sandhibhirbhidyamānaiśca kāṣṭhabhūtāni jajñire || 35.51 ||

Through the Wind-god's fury, all beings everywhere were left breathless, their very joints splitting apart, becoming stiff as logs of wood.

Shloka 52 (uttara.35.52)

niḥsvādhyāyavaṣaṭkāraṃ niṣkriyaṃ dharmavarjitam | vāyuprakopāt trailokyaṃ nirayasthamivābhavat || 35.52 ||

Bereft of Vedic recitation and ritual exclamations, without any activity, void of dharma, the three worlds, through the Wind-god's wrath, became as if plunged into hell.

Shloka 53 (uttara.35.53)

tataḥ prajāḥ sagandharvāḥ sadevāsuramānuṣāḥ | prajāpatiṃ samādhāvanduḥkhitāśca sukhecchayā || 35.53 ||

Then all creatures, together with the gandharvas, gods, asuras and men, distressed and desiring relief, rushed together to Prajapati.

Shloka 54 (uttara.35.54)

ūcuḥ prāñjalayo devā mahodaranibhodarāḥ | tvayā nu bhagavansṛṣṭāḥ prajānātha caturvidhāḥ || 35.54 ||

With joined palms, the gods, their bellies swollen like Mahodara's, said: 'O venerable one, lord of creatures, it is by you that we, the fourfold creation, were brought into being.'

Shloka 55 (uttara.35.55)

tvayā datto 'yamasmākamāyuṣaḥ pavanaḥ patiḥ | so 'smānprāṇeśvaro bhūtvā kasmādeṣo 'dya sattama || 35.55 ||

'This lord of the wind, given by you as the master of our very life-breath — he, having become the lord of our breath, why does he now, O most excellent one —'

Shloka 56 (uttara.35.56)

rurodha duḥkhaṃ janayannantaḥpura iva striyaḥ | tasmāttvāṃ śaraṇaṃ prāptā vāyunohatā vayam || 35.56 ||

'— restrain us, causing us suffering, as women confined within an inner chamber are restrained? Therefore we, struck down by the Wind, have come to you for refuge.'

Shloka 57 (uttara.35.57)

etatprajānāṃ śrutvā tu prajānāthaḥ prajāpatiḥ | kāraṇāditi coktvāsau prajāḥ punarabhāṣata || 35.57 ||

Having heard this from the creatures, Prajapati, lord of all beings, having said, 'there is a cause for this,' spoke again to the creatures —

Shloka 58 (uttara.35.58)

yasmiṃśca kāraṇe vāyuścukrodha ca rurodha ca | prajāḥ śṛṇudhvaṃ tatsarvaṃ śrotavyaṃ cātmanaḥ kṣamam || 35.58 ||

'For what cause the Wind grew angry and restrained you, hear all of that, O creatures — it is fitting that you should hear it.'

Shloka 59 (uttara.35.59)

putrastasyāmareśena indreṇādya nipātitaḥ | rāhorvacanamāsthāya tataḥ sa kupito 'nilaḥ || 35.59 ||

'His son has today been struck down by the lord of the immortals, Indra, acting upon Rahu's word; and so has the Wind grown wrathful.'

Shloka 60 (uttara.35.60)

aśarīraḥ śarīreṣu vāyuścarati pālayan | śarīraṃ hi vinā vāyuṃ samatāṃ yāti dārubhiḥ || 35.60 ||

'Though bodiless himself, the Wind moves within all bodies, sustaining them; for a body without the Wind becomes equal to a mere piece of wood.'

Shloka 61 (uttara.35.61)

vāyuḥ prāṇaḥ sukhaṃ vāyurvāyuḥ sarvamidaṃ jagat | vāyunā samparityaktaṃ na sukhaṃ vindate jagat || 35.61 ||

'The Wind is the breath of life, the Wind is happiness, the Wind is this entire universe; a world abandoned by the Wind finds no happiness at all.'

Shloka 62 (uttara.35.62)

adyaiva ca parityaktaṃ vāyunā jagadāyuṣā | adyaiva te nirucchvāsāḥ kāṣṭhakuḍyopamāḥ sthitāḥ || 35.62 ||

'This very day the world has been abandoned by the Wind, its own life; this very day all of you stand breathless, like so many wooden walls.'

Shloka 63 (uttara.35.63)

tadyāmastatra yatrāste māruto rukprado hi naḥ | mā vināśaṃ gamiṣyāma aprasādyāditeḥ sutāḥ || 35.63 ||

'Let us therefore go to where the Wind-god, the cause of our present affliction, now dwells; let us not perish, O sons of Aditi, without first appeasing him.'

Shloka 64 (uttara.35.64)

tataḥ prajābhiḥ sahitaḥ prajāpatiḥ sadevagandharvabhujaṅgaguhyakaiḥ | jagāma tatrāsyati yatra mārutaḥ sutaṃ surendrābhihataṃ pragṛhya saḥ || 35.64 ||

Then Prajapati, together with all the creatures, with the gods, gandharvas, serpents and guhyakas, went to that place where the Wind-god sat, holding his son who had been struck down by the lord of the gods.

Shloka 65 (uttara.35.65)

tato 'rkavaiśvānarakāñcanaprabhaṃ sutaṃ tadotsaṅgagataṃ sadāgateḥ | caturmukho vīkṣya kṛpāmathākarotsadevagandharvarṣiyakṣarākṣasaiḥ || 35.65 ||

Then, beholding that son, radiant as the sun and as fire and as gold, lying upon the lap of the ever-moving Wind-god, the four-faced Brahma, together with the gods, gandharvas, sages, yakshas and rakshasas, was moved to compassion.
