The Boons and Curse of Hanuman

Sarga 35All sargasSarga 37

Shloka 1 (uttara.36.1)

tataḥ pitāmahaṃ dṛṣṭvā vāyuḥ putravadhārditaḥ | śiśukaṃ taṃ samādāya uttasthau dhāturagrataḥ || 36.1 ||

Then, beholding the Grandsire (Brahma), Vayu, stricken with grief at what seemed his son's death, took up the infant and stood before the Creator.

Shloka 2 (uttara.36.2)

calakuṇḍalamaulisraktapanīyavibhūṣaṇaḥ | pādayornyapatadvāyustisropasthāya vedhase || 36.2 ||

With his swinging earrings, diadem, garlands and golden ornaments, Vayu drew near and fell at the Creator's feet.

Shloka 3 (uttara.36.3)

taṃ tu vedavidā tena lambābharaṇaśobhinā | vāyumutthāpya hastena śiśuṃ taṃ parimṛṣṭavān || 36.3 ||

He, the knower of the Vedas, adorned with hanging ornaments, raising Vayu up by the hand, then touched that infant.

Shloka 4 (uttara.36.4)

spṛṣṭamātrastataḥ so 'tha salīlaṃ padmayoninā | jalasiktaṃ yathā sasyaṃ punarjīvitamāptavān || 36.4 ||

The moment he was touched, in play, by the lotus-born one, the child regained life, as a crop sprinkled with water lives again.

Shloka 5 (uttara.36.5)

prāṇavantamimaṃ dṛṣṭvā prāṇo gandhavaho mudā | cacāra sarvabhūteṣu sanniruddhaṃ yathā purā || 36.5 ||

Seeing him alive, Prana, the wind-bearer, moved joyfully among all beings as before, no longer held back.

Shloka 6 (uttara.36.6)

marudrodhādvinirmuktāstāḥ prajā muditā 'bhavan | śītadāhavinirmuktāḥ padminya iva sāmbujāḥ || 36.6 ||

Released from the stoppage of the wind, all creatures grew joyful, like lotus-ponds freed from excess of cold and heat, blooming with their lotuses.

Shloka 7 (uttara.36.7)

tatastriyugmastrikakuttridhāmā tridaśārcitaḥ | uvāca devatā brahmā mārutapriyakāmyayā || 36.7 ||

Then Brahma — threefold in his powers, three-peaked, of triple abode, honoured by the thirty gods — that deity spoke, wishing to please Maruta.

Shloka 8 (uttara.36.8)

bho mahendreśavaruṇaprajeśvaradhaneśvarāḥ | jānatāmapi vaḥ sarvaṃ vakṣyāmi śrūyatāṃ hitam || 36.8 ||

"O Mahendra, Isha, Varuna, lord of creatures, and lord of wealth — though you already know everything, I shall speak; hear what is beneficial.

Shloka 9 (uttara.36.9)

anena śiśunā kāryaṃ kartavyaṃ vo bhaviṣyati | tadvadadhvaṃ varānsarve mārutasyāsya tuṣṭaye || 36.9 ||

Through this child a great task of yours shall be accomplished; therefore let all of you grant boons, for the satisfaction of this son of Maruta."

Shloka 10 (uttara.36.10)

tataḥ sahasranayanaḥ prītiyuktaḥ śubhānanaḥ | kuśeśayamayīṃ mālāmutkṣipyedaṃ vaco 'bravīt || 36.10 ||

Then the thousand-eyed one, filled with affection, of auspicious countenance, lifting up a garland of lotuses, spoke this word.

Shloka 11 (uttara.36.11)

matkarotsṛṣṭavajreṇa hanurasya yathā hataḥ | nāmnā vai kapiśārdūlo bhavitā hanumāniti || 36.11 ||

"Since his jaw (hanu) was struck by the thunderbolt loosed from my hand, this tiger among monkeys shall become known by the name Hanuman.

Shloka 12 (uttara.36.12)

ahamasya pradāsyāmi paramaṃ varamadbhutam | itaḥ prabhṛti vajrasya mamāvadhyo bhaviṣyati || 36.12 ||

I grant him this supreme and wondrous boon: from this day he shall be unslayable by my thunderbolt."

Shloka 13 (uttara.36.13)

mārtaṇḍastvabravīttatra bhagavāṃstimirāpahaḥ | tejaso 'sya madīyasya dadāmi śatikāṃ kalām || 36.13 ||

Then blessed Martanda, the Sun, dispeller of darkness, said there: "I give him a hundredth part of my own splendour.

Shloka 14 (uttara.36.14)

yadā tu śāstrāṇyadhyetuṃ śaktirasya bhaviṣyati | tadāsya śāstraṃ dāsyāmi yena vāggmī bhaviṣyati || 36.14 ||

And when he shall have the power to study the scriptures, then I shall grant him the scriptures, by which he shall become eloquent.

Shloka 15 (uttara.36.15)

nacāsya bhavitā kaścitsadṛśaḥ śāstradarśane | varuṇaśca varaṃ prādānnāsya mṛtyurbhaviṣyati | varṣāyutaśatenāpi matpāśādudakādapi || 36.15 ||

And none shall be his equal in the exposition of scripture." Varuna too gave a boon: "Not even after ten thousand years shall he meet death from my noose, or from water.

Shloka 16 (uttara.36.16)

yamo daṇḍādavadhyatvamarogatvaṃ ca nityaśaḥ | varaṃ dadāmi santuṣṭa aviṣādaṃ ca saṃyuge || 36.16 ||

Yama said: "Being pleased, I grant this boon — he shall be unslayable by my rod, ever free of disease, and never despondent in battle.

Shloka 17 (uttara.36.17)

gadeyaṃ māmikā nainaṃ saṃyugeṣu vadhiṣyati | ityevaṃ varadaḥ prāha tadā hyekākṣipiṅgalaḥ || 36.17 ||

This mace of mine, too, shall never slay him in battle." Thus spoke the tawny, one-eyed giver of that boon.

Shloka 18 (uttara.36.18)

matto madāyudhānāṃ ca na vadhyo 'yaṃ bhaviṣyati | ityevaṃ śaṅkareṇāpi datto 'sya paramo varaḥ || 36.18 ||

"By me, nor by my weapons, shall he be slain." Thus Shankara too gave him a supreme boon.

Shloka 19 (uttara.36.19)

sarveṣāṃ brahmadaṇḍānāmavadhyo 'yaṃ bhaviṣyati | dīrghāyuśca mahātmā ca iti brahmābravīdvacaḥ || 36.19 ||

"He shall be unslayable by any curse of Brahma, and shall be long-lived and great of soul." Thus spoke Brahma.

Shloka 20 (uttara.36.20)

viśvakarmā ca dṛṣṭvainaṃ bālasūryopamaṃ śiśum | śilpināṃ pravaraḥ prādādvaramasya mahāmatiḥ || 36.20 ||

And Vishvakarma, foremost of craftsmen, of great intellect, seeing that infant like the rising sun, gave him a boon too.

Shloka 21 (uttara.36.21)

matkṛtāni ca śastrāṇi yāni divyāni saṃyuge | tairavadhyatvamāpannaścirajīvī bhaviṣyati || 36.21 ||

"Whatever divine weapons made by me are used in battle, by them he shall be unharmed, and he shall be long-lived."

Shloka 22 (uttara.36.22)

tataḥ surāṇāṃ tu varairdṛṣṭvā hyenamalaṅkṛtam | caturmukhastuṣṭamanā vāyumāha jagadguruḥ || 36.22 ||

Then, seeing him thus adorned with the boons of the gods, the four-faced Brahma, guru of the world, spoke to Vayu with a satisfied mind.

Shloka 23 (uttara.36.23)

amitrāṇāṃ bhayakaro mitrāṇāmabhayaṅkaraḥ | ajeyo bhavitā putrastava māruta mārutiḥ || 36.23 ||

"O Maruta, your son Maruti shall bring fear to enemies and fearlessness to friends, and shall be unconquerable.

Shloka 24 (uttara.36.24)

kāmarūpaḥ kāmacārī kāmagaḥ plavatāṃ varaḥ | bhavatyavyāhatagatiḥ kīrtimāṃśca bhaviṣyati || 36.24 ||

Taking any form at will, roaming at will, going anywhere at will, foremost among those who leap — his path shall never be obstructed, and he shall be renowned.

Shloka 25 (uttara.36.25)

rāvaṇotsādanārthāni rāmapriyakaraṇi ca | romaharṣakarāṇyeṣa kartā karmāṇi saṃyuge || 36.25 ||

This one shall perform, in battle, deeds that bring about Ravana's destruction, that please Rama, and that make the hair stand on end with wonder."

Shloka 26 (uttara.36.26)

evamuktvā tamāmantrya mārutaṃ tvamaraiḥ saha | yathāgataṃ yayuḥ sarve pitāmahapurogamāḥ || 36.26 ||

Having spoken thus, and taking leave of Maruta, all the gods, with the Grandsire at their head, departed together with the immortals as they had come.

Shloka 27 (uttara.36.27)

so 'pi gandhavahaḥ putraṃ pragṛhya gṛhamānayat | añjanāyāstamācakhyau varadattaṃ vinirgataḥ || 36.27 ||

The wind-bearer too took up his son and brought him home; and, having come forth, he related to Anjana the account of the boons given to their child.

Shloka 28 (uttara.36.28)

prāpya rāma varāneṣa varadānasamanvitaḥ | balenātmani saṃsthena so 'pūryata yathā 'rṇavaḥ || 36.28 ||

O Rama, having obtained these boons, endowed with such gifts, he became filled with the strength within him, as the ocean fills with water.

Shloka 29 (uttara.36.29)

tarasā pūryamāṇo 'pi tadā vānarapuṅgavaḥ | āśrameṣu maharṣīṇāmaparādhyati nirbhayaḥ || 36.29 ||

Then, filled with vigour, that bull among monkeys, fearlessly, began to commit offences in the hermitages of the great sages.

Shloka 30 (uttara.36.30)

srugbhāṇḍānyagnihotraṃ ca valkalājinasañcayān | bhagnavicchinnavidhvastānsaṃśāntānāṃ karotyayam || 36.30 ||

He would break, tear, and destroy the sacrificial ladles and vessels, the fire-oblations, and the stores of bark-garments and deerskins of those tranquil sages.

Shloka 31 (uttara.36.31)

evaṃvidhāni karmāṇi prāvartata mahābalaḥ | sarveṣāṃ brahmadaṇḍānāmavadhyaḥ śambhunā kṛtaḥ || 36.31 ||

That mighty one went on in such deeds, for Shambhu had made him unslayable by every curse of Brahma.

Shloka 32 (uttara.36.32)

jānanta ṛṣayastaṃ vai sahante tasya śaktitaḥ || 36.32 ||

The sages, knowing this of him, endured him because of his given power.

Shloka 33 (uttara.36.33)

yathā kesariṇā tveṣa vāyunā so 'ñjanāsutaḥ | pratiṣiddho 'pi maryādāṃ laṅghayatyeva vānaraḥ || 36.33 ||

Though forbidden by Kesari and by Vayu, that monkey, Anjana's son, kept transgressing every bound.

Shloka 34 (uttara.36.34)

tato maharṣayaḥ kruddhā bhṛgvaṅgirasavaṃśajāḥ | śepurenaṃ raghuśreṣṭha nātikruddhātimanyavaḥ || 36.34 ||

Then the great sages of the line of Bhrigu and Angiras, angered — though not extremely wrathful, O best of the Raghus — laid this curse upon him.

Shloka 35 (uttara.36.35)

bādhase yatsamāśritya balamasmānplavaṅgama | taddīrghakālaṃ vettāsi nāsmākaṃ śāpamohitaḥ | yadā te smāryate kīrtistadā te vardhate balam || 36.35 ||

They said: "O monkey, the strength on which you rely to trouble us — deluded by our curse, you shall not know it for a long time; but when your own fame is called back to your mind, then that strength of yours shall grow again."

Shloka 36 (uttara.36.36)

tatassa hṛtatejaujā maharṣivacanaujasā | eṣośramāṇi tānyeva mṛdubhāvaṃ gato 'carat || 36.36 ||

Then, his splendour and vigour taken from him by the power of the great sages' words, he moved about those same hermitages now in a gentle manner.

Shloka 37 (uttara.36.37)

atharkṣarajaso nāma vālisugrīvayoḥ pitā | sarvavānararājā ' 'sīttejasā bhāskaraprabhaḥ || 36.37 ||

Now there was one named Riksharajas, father of Vali and Sugriva, king of all the monkeys, radiant in splendour like the sun.

Shloka 38 (uttara.36.38)

sa tu rājyaṃ ciraṃ kṛtvā vānarāṇāṃ harīśvaraḥ | sa ca ṛkṣarajā nāma kāladharmeṇa saṅgataḥ || 36.38 ||

That lord of monkeys, Riksharajas, having ruled the kingdom a long while, met with the law of time.

Shloka 39 (uttara.36.39)

tasminnastamite cātha mantribhirmantrakovidaiḥ | pitrye pade kṛto vālī sugrīvo vālinaḥ pade || 36.39 ||

When he had set like the sun, the ministers skilled in counsel placed Vali in his father's seat, and Sugriva in the seat beneath Vali.

Shloka 40 (uttara.36.40)

sugrīveṇa samaṃ tvasya advaidhaṃ chidravarjitam | ābālyaṃ sakhyamabhavadanilasyāgninā yathā || 36.40 ||

With Sugriva, his friendship, undivided and free of any flaw, had lasted from childhood, as between Wind and Fire.

Shloka 41 (uttara.36.41)

eṣa śāpavaśādeva na veda balamātmanaḥ | vālisugrīvayorvairaṃ yadā rāma samutthitam || 36.41 ||

O Rama, it was because of that very curse that, when the enmity between Vali and Sugriva arose, he did not know his own strength.

Shloka 42 (uttara.36.42)

na hyeṣa rāma sugrīvo bhrāmyamāṇo 'pi vālinā || 36.42 ||

For, O Rama, this Sugriva, even while being driven and harried about by Vali —

Shloka 43 (uttara.36.43)

deva jānāti na hyeṣa balamātmani mārutiḥ | ṛṣiśāpāhṛtabalastadaiṣa kapisattamaḥ || 36.43 ||

was not defended by him — for, O lord, this Maruti too did not know the strength within himself; that best of monkeys had had his strength taken by the sages' curse.

Shloka 44 (uttara.36.44)

siṃhaḥ kuñjararuddho vā āsthitaḥ sahito raṇe || 36.44 ||

He stood there, as it were, like a lion held back by an elephant, engaged together in that fight.

Shloka 45 (uttara.36.45)

parākramotsāhamatipratāpasauśīlyamādhuryanayānayaiśca | gāmbhīryacāturyasuvīryadhairyairhanūmataḥ ko 'bhyadhiko 'sti loke || 36.45 ||

In valour, ardour, wisdom, majesty, gentleness, sweetness, in the knowledge of right policy and wrong, in profundity, cleverness, prowess and fortitude — who in this world surpasses Hanuman?

Shloka 46 (uttara.36.46)

asau punarvyākaraṇaṃ grahīṣyansūryonmukhaḥ praṣṭumanā kapīndraḥ | udyadgirerastagiriṃ jagāma granthaṃ mahaddhārayanaprameyaḥ || 36.46 ||

This lord of monkeys, wishing to learn grammar, facing the sun, questioning him, went — bearing that great treatise in mind, immeasurable as he is — from the mountain of sunrise to the mountain of sunset.

Shloka 47 (uttara.36.47)

sasūtravṛttyarthapadaṃ mahārthaṃ sasaṅgrahaṃ sāddhyati vai kapīndraḥ | nahyasya kaścitsadṛśo 'sti śāstre vaiśārade cchandagatau tathaiva || 36.47 ||

That lord of monkeys masters the science entire — its aphorisms, glosses, word-meanings, deep import and compendium; none is his equal in the science of grammar, nor likewise in the science of metre.

Shloka 48 (uttara.36.48)

sarvāsu vidyāsu tapovidhāne praspardhate 'yo hi guruṃ surāṇām | so 'yaṃ navavyākaraṇārthavettā brahmā bhaviṣyatyapi te prasādāt || 36.48 ||

In every branch of learning, and in the practice of austerity, he rivals even the guru of the gods; this knower of the meaning of the nine grammars shall, by your grace, become like Brahma himself.

Shloka 49 (uttara.36.49)

pravīvivakṣoriva sāgarasya lokāndidhakṣoriva pāvakasya yugakṣaye hyeva yathāntakasya hanūmataḥ sthāsyati kaḥ purastāt || 36.49 ||

Like the ocean longing to overrun its bounds, like fire longing to consume the worlds, like Death himself at the ending of an age — who could stand before Hanuman?

Shloka 50 (uttara.36.50)

eṣeva cānye ca mahākapīndrāḥ sugrīvamaindadvividāḥ sanīlāḥ | satāratāreyanalāḥ sarambhāstvatkāraṇādrāma surairhi sṛṣṭāḥ || 36.50 ||

This one, O Rama, and the other great lords of monkeys — Sugriva, Mainda, Dvivida, with Nila, Tara, Tareya, Nala, Rambha — were all created by the gods for your very sake.

Shloka 51 (uttara.36.51)

tadetkathitaṃ sarvaṃ yanmāṃ tvaṃ paripṛcchasi | hanūmato bālabhāve karmaitatkathitaṃ mayā || 36.51 ||

Thus all that you asked of me has been told; I have related this deed from Hanuman's boyhood.

Shloka 52 (uttara.36.52)

śrutvā 'gastyasya kathitaṃ rāmaḥ saumitrireva ca | vismayaṃ paramaṃ jagmurvānarā rākṣasaiḥ saha || 36.52 ||
