Uttara Kanda · Sarga 9
The Birth of Ravana and His Brothers
Shloka 1 (uttara.9.1)
kasyacittvatha kālasya sumālī nāma rākṣasaḥ | rasātalānmartyalokaṃ sarvaṃ vai vicacāra ha || 9.1 ||
Then, after some time had passed, the rakshasa named Sumali journeyed forth from Rasatala and wandered through the whole world of mortals.
Shloka 2 (uttara.9.2)
nīlajīmūtasaṅkāśastaptakāñcanakuṇḍalaḥ | kanyāṃ duhitaraṃ gṛhya vinā padmamiva śriyam || 9.2 ||
Dark as a blue rain-cloud, wearing earrings of molten gold, he took with him his unwed daughter -- who was like the goddess Shri without her lotus --
Shloka 3 (uttara.9.3)
rākṣasendraḥ sa tu tadā vicaranvai mahītalam | tadāpaśyatsa gacchantaṃ puṣpakeṇa dhaneśvaram || 9.3 ||
That rakshasa lord, as he wandered over the earth, saw the lord of wealth passing by on the Pushpaka chariot.
Shloka 4 (uttara.9.4)
gacchantaṃ pitaraṃ draṣṭuṃ pulastyatanayaṃ vibhum | taṃ dṛṣṭvā 'marasaṅkāśaṃ svacchandaṃ tapanopamam || 9.4 ||
going to see his father, the mighty son of Pulastya; seeing him, godlike, free in his own splendor, radiant as the sun,
Shloka 5 (uttara.9.5)
rasātalaṃ praviṣṭaḥ sanmartyalokātsavismayaḥ | ityevaṃ cintayāmāsa rākṣasānāṃ mahāmatiḥ || 9.5 ||
he who dwelt in Rasatala, now filled with wonder at what he saw in the world of mortals, the wise lord of the rakshasas, thought thus:
Shloka 6 (uttara.9.6)
kiṃ kṛtaṃ śreya ityevaṃ vardhemahi kathaṃ vayam | athābravītsutāṃ rakṣaḥ kaikasīṃ nāma nāmataḥ || 9.6 ||
'What good deed brings such prosperity -- how might we too rise to such heights?' Then the rakshasa spoke to his daughter, Kaikasi by name:
Shloka 7 (uttara.9.7)
putri pradānakālo 'yaṃ yauvanaṃ vyativartate | pratyākhyānācca bhītaistvaṃ na varaiḥ pratigṛhyase || 9.7 ||
'Daughter, this is the time for your marriage -- your youth is passing; yet suitors, fearing refusal, do not come forward to seek your hand.'
Shloka 8 (uttara.9.8)
tvatkṛte ca vayaṃ sarve yantritā dharmabuddhayaḥ | tvaṃ hi sarvaguṇopetā śrīḥ sākṣādiva putrike | kanyāpitṛtvaṃ duḥkhaṃ hi sarveṣāṃ mānakāṅkṣiṇām || 9.8 ||
'And on your account, all of us, though we hold to dharma, find ourselves constrained; for you, my daughter, are endowed with every virtue, like Shri herself made visible -- and being father to a daughter is a grief to all who value their honor.'
Shloka 9 (uttara.9.9)
na jñāyate ca kaḥ kanyāṃ varayediti kanyake || 9.9 ||
'And, my girl, one never knows who will come forward to choose a daughter in marriage.'
Shloka 10 (uttara.9.10)
mātuḥ kulaṃ pitṛkulaṃ yatra caiva pradīyate | kulatrayaṃ sadā kanyā saṃśaye sthāpya tiṣṭhati || 9.10 ||
'Her mother's family, her father's family, and the family to which she is given -- a daughter always holds all three lineages in suspense.'
Shloka 11 (uttara.9.11)
sā tvaṃ munivaraṃ śreṣṭhaṃ prajāpatikulodbhavam | bhaja viśravasaṃ putri paulastyaṃ varaya svayam || 9.11 ||
'So you, my daughter, go to that foremost of sages, born of Prajapati's line -- Vishrava, son of Pulastya -- and choose him for yourself.'
Shloka 12 (uttara.9.12)
īdṛśāste bhaviṣyanti putrāḥ putri na saṃśayaḥ | tejasā bhāskarasamo yādṛśo 'yaṃ dhaneśvaraḥ || 9.12 ||
'Then, my daughter, your sons will surely be such as this -- radiant as the sun, just as this lord of wealth is.'
Shloka 13 (uttara.9.13)
sā tu tadvacanaṃ śrutvā kanyakā pitṛgauravāt | tatropāgamya sā tasthau viśravā yatra tapyate || 9.13 ||
Hearing those words, that maiden, out of reverence for her father, went to the place where Vishrava was practicing austerities and stood there.
Shloka 14 (uttara.9.14)
etasminnantare rāma pulastyatanayo dvijaḥ | agnihotramupātiṣṭhaccaturtha iva pāvakaḥ || 9.14 ||
Meanwhile, O Rama, the twice-born son of Pulastya was tending his sacred fire, seeming like a fourth flame himself.
Shloka 15 (uttara.9.15)
avicintya tu tāṃ velāṃ dāruṇāṃ pitṛgauravāt | upasṛtyāgratastasya caraṇādhomukhī sthitā | vilikhantī muhurbhūmimaṅguṣṭhāgreṇa bhāminī || 9.15 ||
Heedless of that ominous hour, out of reverence for her father, she came before him and stood with face bowed at his feet, that lovely woman, again and again scratching the ground with the tip of her toe.
Shloka 16 (uttara.9.16)
sa tu tāṃ vīkṣya suśroṇīṃ pūrṇacandranibhānanām | abravītparamodāro dīpyamānāṃ svatejasā || 9.16 ||
Seeing her -- lovely of form, her face like the full moon, glowing with her own radiance -- that most gracious sage spoke:
Shloka 17 (uttara.9.17)
bhadre kasyāsi duhitā kuto vā tvamihāgatā | kiṃ kāryaṃ kasya vā hetostattvato brūhi śobhane || 9.17 ||
'Good lady, whose daughter are you, and whence have you come here? What is your purpose, and for what reason -- tell me truly, fair one.'
Shloka 18 (uttara.9.18)
evamuktā tu sā kanyā kṛtāñjalirathābravīt | ātmaprabhāveṇa mune jñātumarhasi me matam || 9.18 ||
Thus addressed, the maiden, joining her palms, replied: 'O sage, by your own power you are well able to know what is in my mind.'
Shloka 19 (uttara.9.19)
kiṃ tu māṃ viddhi brahmarṣe śāsanātpiturāgatām | kaikasī nāma nāmnāhaṃ śeṣaṃ tvaṃ jñātumarhasi || 9.19 ||
'But know, O brahmin sage, that I have come at my father's command; my name is Kaikasi -- the rest you are able to know for yourself.'
Shloka 20 (uttara.9.20)
The sage, entering into meditation, spoke these words: 'I have understood, good lady, the purpose in your mind.'
Shloka 21 (uttara.9.21)
sutābhilāṣo mattaste mattamātaṅgagāmini | dāruṇāyāṃ tu velāyāṃ yasmāttvaṃ māmupasthitā || 9.21 ||
'You desire a son from me, O you whose gait is like a rutting elephant's; but since you have come to me at this dire, inauspicious hour --'
Shloka 22 (uttara.9.22)
śṛṇu tasmātsutānbhadre yādṛśāñjanayiṣyasi | dāruṇāndāruṇākārāndāruṇābhijanapriyān || 9.22 ||
'-- therefore hear, good lady, what manner of sons you will bear: terrible ones, terrible in form, and dear to terrible kin.'
Shloka 23 (uttara.9.23)
prasaviṣyasi suśroṇi rākṣasānkrūrakarmaṇaḥ | sā tu tadvacanaṃ śrutvā praṇipatyābravīdvacaḥ || 9.23 ||
'You shall give birth, fair one, to rakshasas of cruel deeds.' Hearing these words, she bowed low and spoke:
Shloka 24 (uttara.9.24)
bhagavannīdṛśānputrāṃstvatto 'haṃ brahmavādinaḥ | necchāmi sudurācārānprasādaṃ kartumarhasi || 9.24 ||
'O venerable one, expounder of sacred truth, I do not wish for such wicked sons from you -- be gracious to me.'
Shloka 25 (uttara.9.25)
kanyayā tvevamuktastu viśravā munipuṅgavaḥ | uvāca kaikasīṃ bhūyaḥ pūrṇenduriva rohiṇīm || 9.25 ||
Thus addressed by the maiden, Vishrava, foremost of sages, spoke again to Kaikasi, as the full moon might speak to Rohini.
Shloka 26 (uttara.9.26)
paścimo yastava suto bhaviṣyati śubhānane | mama vaṃśānurūpaḥ sa dharmātmā ca bhaviṣyati || 9.26 ||
'The son who comes to you last, O fair of face, will be worthy of my lineage, and he shall be righteous of soul.'
Shloka 27 (uttara.9.27)
evamuktā tu sā kanyā rāma kālena kenacit | janayāmāsa bībhatsaṃ rakṣorūpaṃ sudāruṇam || 9.27 ||
Thus addressed, that maiden, O Rama, in time gave birth to a hideous, most terrible rakshasa form.
Shloka 28 (uttara.9.28)
daśagrīvaṃ mahādaṃṣṭraṃ nīlāñjanacayopamam | tāmroṣṭhaṃ viṃśatibhujaṃ mahāsyaṃ dīptamūrdhajam || 9.28 ||
Ten-necked, huge-fanged, dark as a heap of collyrium, copper-lipped, twenty-armed, wide-mouthed, his hair ablaze.
Shloka 29 (uttara.9.29)
tasmiñjāte tu tatkāle sajvālakavalāḥ śivāḥ | kravyādāścāpasavyāni maṇḍalāni pracakramuḥ || 9.29 ||
At the moment of his birth, jackals with mouths full of flame, and carrion-eating beasts, began to circle about in ill-omened, left-turning rounds.
Shloka 30 (uttara.9.30)
vavarṣa rudhiraṃ devo meghāśca kharaniḥsvanāḥ | prababhau na ca sūryo vai maholkāścāpatanbhuvi || 9.30 ||
The sky rained down blood, and clouds rumbled with a harsh roar; the sun did not shine, and great meteors fell to the earth.
Shloka 31 (uttara.9.31)
cakampe jagatī caiva vavurvātāḥ sudāruṇāḥ | akṣobhyaḥ kṣubhitaścaiva samudraḥ saritāṃ patiḥ || 9.31 ||
The earth quaked, and dreadful winds blew; and the ocean, lord of rivers, unshakeable though it was, was thrown into turmoil.
Shloka 32 (uttara.9.32)
atha nāmākarottasya pitāmahasamaḥ pitā | daśagrīvaḥ prasūto 'yaṃ daśagrīvo bhaviṣyati || 9.32 ||
Then his father, wise as the Grandsire himself, gave him his name: 'Born with ten necks, he shall be called Dashagriva.'
Shloka 33 (uttara.9.33)
tasya tvanantaraṃ jātaḥ kumbhakarṇo mahābalaḥ | pramāṇādyasya vipulaṃ pramāṇaṃ neha vidyate || 9.33 ||
After him was born Kumbhakarna, immensely strong, whose vast bulk has no equal measure in this world.
Shloka 34 (uttara.9.34)
tataḥ śūrpaṇakhā nāma sañjajñe vikṛtānanā | vibhīṣaṇaśca dharmātmā kaikasyāḥ paścimaḥ sutaḥ || 9.34 ||
Then was born a daughter named Shurpanakha, misshapen of face; and Vibhishana, righteous of soul, was Kaikasi's last-born son.
Shloka 35 (uttara.9.35)
tasmiñjāte mahāsattve puṣpavarṣaṃ papāta ha || 9.35 ||
When that great and noble being was born, a rain of flowers fell from the sky.
Shloka 36 (uttara.9.36)
nabhaḥsthāne dundubhayo devānāṃ prāṇadaṃstadā | vākyaṃ caivāntarikṣe ca sādhu sādhviti tattadā || 9.36 ||
In the sky, the drums of the gods resounded, and a voice in the air cried out, 'Well done, well done!'
Shloka 37 (uttara.9.37)
tau tu tatra mahāraṇye vavṛdhāte mahaujasau | kumbhakarṇadaśagrīvau lokodvegakarau tadā || 9.37 ||
There, in that great forest, those two mighty ones, Kumbhakarna and Dashagriva, grew up -- who were destined to bring terror upon the world.
Shloka 38 (uttara.9.38)
kumbhakarṇaḥ pramattastu maharṣīndharmavatsalān | trailokyaṃ bhakṣayannityāsantuṣṭo vicacāra ha || 9.38 ||
Kumbhakarna, unrestrained, devouring great sages devoted to dharma, roamed through the three worlds, never satisfied.
Shloka 39 (uttara.9.39)
vibhīṣaṇastu dharmātmā nityaṃ dharme vyavasthitaḥ | svādhyāyaniyatāhāra uvāsa vijitendriyaḥ || 9.39 ||
But Vibhishana, righteous of soul, ever grounded in dharma, devoted to sacred study, disciplined in his diet, lived on with his senses mastered.
Shloka 40 (uttara.9.40)
atha vaiśravaṇo devastatra kālena kenacit | āgataḥ pitaraṃ draṣṭuṃ puṣpakeṇa dhaneśvaraḥ || 9.40 ||
Then, after some time, the god Vaishravana, lord of wealth, came there on the Pushpaka chariot to see his father.
Shloka 41 (uttara.9.41)
taṃ dṛṣṭvā kaikasī tatra jvalantamiva tejasā | āgamya rākṣasī tatra daśagrīvamuvāca ha || 9.41 ||
Seeing him there, seeming to blaze with splendor, Kaikasi, that rakshasa woman, came to Dashagriva and said:
Shloka 42 (uttara.9.42)
putra vaiśravaṇaṃ paśya bhrātaraṃ tejasā vṛtam | bhrātṛbhāve same cāpi paśyātmānaṃ tvamīdṛśam || 9.42 ||
'My son, look at your brother Vaishravana, clothed in splendor; and though you are equal as brothers, look at yourself -- so unlike him.'
Shloka 43 (uttara.9.43)
daśagrīva tathā yatnaṃ kuruṣvāmitavikrama | yathā tvamasi me putra bhava rvaiśravaṇopamaḥ || 9.43 ||
'Dashagriva, whose might is boundless, strive in such a way, my son, that you may become the equal of Vaishravana.'
Shloka 44 (uttara.9.44)
mātustadvacanaṃ śrutvā daśagrīvaḥ pratāpavān | amarṣamatulaṃ lebhe pratijñāṃ cākarottadā || 9.44 ||
Hearing his mother's words, the mighty Dashagriva felt an indignation beyond measure, and then made this vow:
Shloka 45 (uttara.9.45)
satyaṃ te pratijānāmi bhrātṛtulyo 'dhiko 'pi vā | bhaviṣyāmyojasā caiva santāpaṃ tyaja hṛdgatam || 9.45 ||
'I make you this true promise: by my own strength I shall become equal to my brother, or even greater still; cast away the sorrow in your heart.'
Shloka 46 (uttara.9.46)
tatastenaiva kopena daśagrīvaḥ sahānujaḥ | cikīrṣurduṣkaraṃ karma tapase dhṛtamānasaḥ || 9.46 ||
Then, driven by that very anger, Dashagriva, together with his younger brothers, resolved firmly upon austerity, determined to accomplish a formidable task.
Shloka 47 (uttara.9.47)
prāpsyāmi tapasā kāmamiti kṛtvā 'dhyavasya ca | āgacchadātmasiddhyarthaṃ gokarṇasyāśramaṃ śubham || 9.47 ||
'I shall win my desire through austerity' -- resolving thus with firm determination, he set out, to achieve his purpose, for the blessed hermitage of Gokarna.
Shloka 48 (uttara.9.48)
sa rākṣasastatra sahānujastadā tapaścakārātulamugravikramaḥ | atoṣayaccāpi pitāmahaṃ vibhuṃ dadau sa tuṣṭaśca varāñjayāvahān || 9.48 ||
That rakshasa, fierce in valor, together with his younger brothers, performed there matchless and terrible austerities; he pleased the mighty Grandsire, who, well satisfied, granted him boons that would bring victory.
