The Boons of Brahma

Sarga 9All sargasSarga 11

Shloka 1 (uttara.10.1)

athābravīnmuniṃ rāmaḥ kathaṃ te bhrātaro vane | kīdṛśaṃ tu tadā brahmaṃstapastepurmahābalāḥ || 10.1 ||

Then Rama said to the sage: 'How, O Brahmin, and what manner of austerity did those mighty brothers perform there in the forest?'

Shloka 2 (uttara.10.2)

agastyastvabravīttatra rāmaṃ suprītamānasam | tāṃstāndharmavidhīṃstatra bhrātaraste samāviśan || 10.2 ||

Agastya, his heart well pleased, then said to Rama: 'Those brothers there took up various rites of austerity, each his own.'

Shloka 3 (uttara.10.3)

kumbhakarṇastato yatto nityaṃ dharmapathe sthitaḥ | tatāpa grīṣmakāle tu pañcāgnīnparitaḥ sthitaḥ || 10.3 ||

Kumbhakarna, then, resolute and ever fixed upon the path of dharma, in the summer season practiced austerity standing amid five fires.

Shloka 4 (uttara.10.4)

meghāmbusikto varṣāsu vīrāsanamasevata | nityaṃ ca śiśire kāle jalamadhyapratiśrayaḥ || 10.4 ||

In the rainy season, drenched by the clouds, he held the hero's posture; and through the winter, always, he took his abode amid water.

Shloka 5 (uttara.10.5)

evaṃ varṣasahasrāṇi daśa tasyāticakramuḥ | dharme prayatamānasya satpathe niṣṭhitasya ca || 10.5 ||

Thus ten thousand years passed for him, laboring in dharma and firmly set upon the righteous path.

Shloka 6 (uttara.10.6)

vibhīṣaṇastu dharmātmā nityaṃ dharmaparaḥ śuciḥ | pañcavarṣasahasrāṇi pādenaikena tasthivān || 10.6 ||

Vibhishana, righteous of soul, ever devoted to dharma and pure, stood upon a single foot for five thousand years.

Shloka 7 (uttara.10.7)

samāpte niyame tasya nanṛtuścāpsarogaṇāḥ | papāta puṣpavarṣaṃ ca kṣubhitāścāpi devatāḥ || 10.7 ||

When his vow was fulfilled, the hosts of apsaras danced, a shower of flowers fell, and the gods too were stirred with wonder.

Shloka 8 (uttara.10.8)

pañcavarṣasahasrāṇi sūryaṃ caivānvavartata | tasthau cordhvaśirobāhuḥ svādhyāyadhṛtamānasaḥ || 10.8 ||

For another five thousand years he followed the sun's course, standing with head and arms raised, his mind held fast in sacred recitation.

Shloka 9 (uttara.10.9)

evaṃ vibhīṣaṇasyāpi svargasthasyeva nandane | daśavarṣasahasrāṇi gatāni niyatātmanaḥ || 10.9 ||

Thus, for the self-disciplined Vibhishana too, as though he dwelt in the heavenly garden of Nandana, ten thousand years passed.

Shloka 10 (uttara.10.10)

daśavarṣasahasraṃ tu nirāhāro daśānanaḥ | pūrṇe varṣasahasre tu śiraścāgnau juhāva saḥ || 10.10 ||

Ten-faced Ravana went without food for ten thousand years; and at the end of each thousand years, he offered up one of his heads into the fire.

Shloka 11 (uttara.10.11)

evaṃ varṣasahasrāṇi nava tasyāticakramuḥ | śirāṃsi nava cāpyasya praviṣṭāni hutāśanam || 10.11 ||

So nine thousand years passed for him, and nine of his heads had already gone into the flames.

Shloka 12 (uttara.10.12)

atha varṣasahasre tu daśame daśamaṃ śiraḥ | chettukāme daśagrīve prāptastatra pitāmahaḥ || 10.12 ||

Then, in the tenth thousand-year span, just as Dashagriva was about to cut off his tenth head, the Grandsire appeared there.

Shloka 13 (uttara.10.13)

pitāmahastu suprītaḥ sārdhaṃ devairupasthitaḥ | tava tāvaddaśagrīva prīto 'smītyabhyabhāṣata || 10.13 ||

The Grandsire, well pleased, arriving together with the gods, said: 'Dashagriva, I am indeed pleased with you.'

Shloka 14 (uttara.10.14)

'Quickly choose, knower of dharma, whatever boon you desire; what wish shall I grant you today? Your labor shall not go in vain.'

Shloka 15 (uttara.10.15)

athābravīdṛśagrīvaḥ prahṛṣṭenāntarātmanā | praṇamya śirasā devaṃ harṣagadgadayā girā || 10.15 ||

Then Dashagriva, his heart overflowing with joy, bowing his head to the god, spoke in a voice choked with delight:

Shloka 16 (uttara.10.16)

bhagavanprāṇināṃ nityaṃ nānyatra maraṇādbhayam | nāsti mṛtyusamaḥ śatruramaratvamahaṃ vṛṇe || 10.16 ||

'O venerable one, for living creatures there is no fear anywhere but from death; there is no enemy equal to death -- I choose immortality.'

Shloka 17 (uttara.10.17)

evamuktastadā brahmā daśagrīvamuvāca ha | nāsti sarvāmaratvaṃ te varamanyaṃ vṛṇīṣva me || 10.17 ||

Thus addressed, Brahma then said to Dashagriva: 'Complete immortality is not possible for you; ask of me some other boon.'

Shloka 18 (uttara.10.18)

evamukte tadā rāma brahmaṇā lokakartṛṇā | daśagrīva uvācedaṃ kṛtāñjalirathāgrataḥ || 10.18 ||

Thus addressed, O Rama, by Brahma, the maker of the worlds, Dashagriva, joining his palms, spoke this before him:

Shloka 19 (uttara.10.19)

suparṇanāgayakṣāṇāṃ daityadānavarakṣasām | avadhyo 'haṃ prajādhyakṣa devatānāṃ ca śāśvata || 10.19 ||

'May I be unslayable by garudas, serpents, and yakshas, by daityas, danavas, and rakshasas, O lord of creatures -- and, eternal one, by the gods as well.'

Shloka 20 (uttara.10.20)

nahi cintā mamānyeṣu prāṇiṣvamarapūjita | tṛṇabhūtā hi te manye prāṇino mānuṣādayaḥ || 10.20 ||

'I have no concern for other creatures, O one worshipped by the immortals; for I count beings such as men to be no more than blades of grass.'

Shloka 21 (uttara.10.21)

evamuktastu dharmātmā daśagrīveṇa rakṣasā | uvāca vacanaṃ devaḥ saha devaiḥ pitāmahaḥ || 10.21 ||

Thus addressed by the rakshasa Dashagriva, the righteous god, the Grandsire, together with the gods, spoke this word:

Shloka 22 (uttara.10.22)

bhaviṣyatyevametatte vaco rākṣasapuṅgava | evamuktvā tu taṃ rāma daśagrīvaṃ pitāmahaḥ || 10.22 ||

'This shall indeed come to pass, just as you have spoken, O bull among rakshasas.' Having said this to Dashagriva, O Rama, the Grandsire went on--

Shloka 23 (uttara.10.23)

śṛṇu cāpi varo bhūyaḥ prītasyeha śubho mama | hutāni yāni śīrṣāṇi pūrvamagnau tvayānagha || 10.23 ||

'-- hear too this further boon, auspicious, from me, well pleased: those heads which you earlier offered into the fire, blameless one--'

Shloka 24 (uttara.10.24)

punastāni bhaviṣyanti tathaiva tava rākṣasa | vitarāmīha te saumya varaṃ cānyaṃ durāsadam || 10.24 ||

'-- shall be restored to you again just as they were, O rakshasa. And I grant you here, gentle one, yet another boon, hard to come by.'

Shloka 25 (uttara.10.25)

chandatastava rūpaṃ ca manasā yadyathepsitam | bhaviṣyati na sandeho madvarāttavarākṣasa || 10.25 ||

'And your form, too, at your pleasure, however you wish it in your mind, shall become so, without doubt, through my boon, O rakshasa.'

Shloka 26 (uttara.10.26)

evaṃ pitāmahoktasya daśagrīvasya rakṣasaḥ | agnau hutāni śīrṣāṇi punastānyutthitāni vai || 10.26 ||

So, as the Grandsire had declared, the heads of the rakshasa Dashagriva that had been offered into the fire rose up again.

Shloka 27 (uttara.10.27)

evamuktvā tu taṃ rāma daśagrīvaṃ pitāmahaḥ | vibhīṣaṇamathovāca vākyaṃ lokapitāmahaḥ || 10.27 ||

Having spoken thus to Dashagriva, O Rama, the Grandsire, the grandsire of all worlds, then spoke this word to Vibhishana:

Shloka 28 (uttara.10.28)

vibhīṣaṇa tvayā vatsa dharmasaṃhitabuddhinā | parituṣṭo 'smi dharmātmanvaraṃ varaya suvrata || 10.28 ||

'Vibhishana, my child, your mind bound fast to dharma, righteous of soul -- I am well pleased with you; choose a boon, keeper of good vows.'

Shloka 29 (uttara.10.29)

vibhīṣaṇastu dharmātmā vacanaṃ prāha sāñjaliḥ | vṛtaḥ sarvaguṇairnityaṃ candramā raśmibhiryathā || 10.29 ||

Vibhishana, righteous of soul, ever clothed in every virtue as the moon is clothed in its rays, joined his palms and spoke this word:

Shloka 30 (uttara.10.30)

bhagavankṛtakṛtyo 'haṃ yanme lokaguruḥ svayam | prītena yadi dātavyo varo me śṛṇu suvrata || 10.30 ||

'O venerable one, my purpose is already fulfilled, in that the world's own teacher has come to me himself; but if, being pleased, you would grant me a boon, hear my request, keeper of good vows.'

Shloka 31 (uttara.10.31)

paramāpadgatasyāpi dharme mama matirbhavet | aśikṣitaṃ ca brahmāstraṃ bhagavanpratibhātu me || 10.31 ||

'Even should I fall into the direst adversity, may my mind hold fast to dharma; and, venerable one, may the Brahmastra, though unstudied, reveal itself to me of its own accord.'

Shloka 32 (uttara.10.32)

yā yā me jāyate buddhiryeṣu yeṣvāśrameṣu ca | sā sā bhavatu dharmiṣṭhā taṃ tu dharmaṃ ca pālaye || 10.32 ||

'Whatever understanding arises in me, in whatsoever stage of life, may it always be steeped in dharma -- and may I hold fast to that same dharma.'

Shloka 33 (uttara.10.33)

eṣa me paramodāra varaḥ paramako mataḥ | nahi dharmābhiraktānāṃ loke kiñcana durlabham || 10.33 ||

'This, most generous one, I consider the supreme boon; for nothing in this world is hard to attain for those devoted to dharma.'

Shloka 34 (uttara.10.34)

punaḥ prajāpatiḥ prīto vibhīṣaṇamuvāca ha | dharmiṣṭhastvaṃ yathā vatsa tathā caitadbhaviṣyati || 10.34 ||

Once more well pleased, Prajapati said to Vibhishana: 'As you are devoted to dharma, my child, so shall it be.'

Shloka 35 (uttara.10.35)

yasmādrākṣasayonau te jātasyāmitranāśana | nādharme jāyate buddhiramaratvaṃ dadāmi te || 10.35 ||

'Since, O destroyer of foes, though born in a rakshasa womb, your mind has never inclined toward unrighteousness, I grant you immortality as well.'

Shloka 36 (uttara.10.36)

ityuktvā kumbhakarṇāya varaṃ dātumupasthitam | prajāpatiṃ surāḥ sarve vākyaṃ prāñjalayo 'bruvan || 10.36 ||

Having said this, as Prajapati stood ready to grant a boon to Kumbhakarna, all the gods, with joined palms, said this to him:

Shloka 37 (uttara.10.37)

na tāvatkumbhakarṇāya pradātavyo varastvayā | jānīṣe hi yathā lokāṃstrāsayatyeṣa durmatiḥ || 10.37 ||

'A boon should not yet be given to Kumbhakarna; for you well know how this ill-minded one terrorizes the worlds.'

Shloka 38 (uttara.10.38)

nandane 'psarasaḥ sapta mahendrānucarā daśa | anena bhakṣitā brahmannṛṣayo mānuṣāstathā || 10.38 ||

'In Nandana, he has devoured seven apsaras and ten attendants of mighty Indra, O Brahmin, and sages and men as well.'

Shloka 39 (uttara.10.39)

alabdhavarapūrveṇa yatkṛtaṃ rākṣasena tu | tadeṣa varalabdhaḥ syādbhakṣayedbhuvanatrayam || 10.39 ||

'Consider what this rakshasa has already done even without a boon -- should he now win one, he would swallow the three worlds whole.'

Shloka 40 (uttara.10.40)

varavyājena moho 'smai dīyatāmamitaprabha | lokānāṃ svasti caivaṃ syādbhavedasya ca sannatiḥ || 10.40 ||

'Let some delusion, O one of boundless splendor, be given to him under the guise of a boon -- so the worlds shall be safe, and he himself held in check.'

Shloka 41 (uttara.10.41)

evamuktaḥ surairbrahmā 'cintayat padmasambhavaḥ | cintitā copatasthe 'sya pārśvaṃ devī sarasvatī || 10.41 ||

Thus addressed by the gods, Brahma, the lotus-born, fell to pondering; and no sooner did he think of her than the goddess Sarasvati came and stood at his side.

Shloka 42 (uttara.10.42)

prāñjaliḥ sā tu pārśvasthā prāha vākyaṃ sarasvatī | iyamasmyāgatā deva kiṃ kāryaṃ karavāṇyaham || 10.42 ||

Standing beside him, palms joined, Sarasvati spoke this word: 'Here I am, O god, come at your thought; what task shall I do?'

Shloka 43 (uttara.10.43)

prajāpatistuṃ tāṃ prāptāṃ prāha vākyaṃ sarasvatīm | vāṇi tvaṃ rākṣasendrasya bhava yā devatepsitā || 10.43 ||

Prajapati then said to Sarasvati, who had come to him: 'O goddess of speech, come to reside with the lord of the rakshasas, in whatever manner the gods desire.'

Shloka 44 (uttara.10.44)

tathetyuktvā praviṣṭā sā prajāpatirathābravīt | kumbhakarṇa mahābāho varaṃ varaya yo mataḥ || 10.44 ||

'So be it,' she said, and entered him; then Prajapati spoke: 'Kumbhakarna, mighty of arm, ask for the boon you desire.'

Shloka 45 (uttara.10.45)

kumbhakarṇastu tadvākyaṃ śrutvā vacanamabravīt | svaptuṃ varṣāṇyanekāni devadeva mamepsitam || 10.45 ||

Kumbhakarna, hearing this, spoke these words: 'To sleep for many years -- that, O god of gods, is my desire.'

Shloka 46 (uttara.10.46)

evamastviti taṃ coktvā prāyādbrahmā suraiḥ samam | devī sarasvatī caiva rākṣasaṃ taṃ jahau punaḥ || 10.46 ||

'So be it,' Brahma said to him, and departed together with the gods; and the goddess Sarasvati, too, then left that rakshasa once more.

Shloka 47 (uttara.10.47)

When Brahma had departed into the sky together with the gods, he -- released now by Sarasvati -- returned to his own senses.

Shloka 48 (uttara.10.48)

kumbhakarṇastu duṣṭātmā cintayāmāsa duḥkhitaḥ | īdṛśaṃ kimidaṃ vākyaṃ mamādya vadanāccyutam || 10.48 ||

Kumbhakarna, ill-fated, fell to brooding in distress: 'What strange thing is this that has fallen today from my own mouth?'

Shloka 49 (uttara.10.49)

ahaṃ vyāmohito devairiti manye tadā ' 'gataiḥ | evaṃ labdhavarāḥ sarve bhrātaro dīptatejasaḥ | śleṣmātakavanaṃ gatvā tatra te nyavasansukham || 10.49 ||

'I must have been bewildered by the gods who came then -- or so I believe.' Thus, having obtained their boons, all the brothers, blazing with splendor, went to the Shleshmataka forest and dwelt there in happiness.
