Shloka 2 (yuddha.120.2)

amoghaṃ darśanaṃ rāma tavāsmākaṃ nararṣabha | prītiyuktāḥ sma tena tvaṃ brūhi yanmanasepsitam || 120.2 ||

"O Rama, foremost among men, this sight of us should not go unrewarded; we are filled with affection for you - tell us whatever your heart desires."

evamukto mahendreṇa prasannena mahātmanā | suprasannamanā hṛṣṭo vacanam prāha rāghavaḥ || 120.3 ||

Thus addressed by the great-souled, gracious Mahendra, Raghava, his heart utterly glad and rejoicing, spoke these words -

Shloka 4 (yuddha.120.4)

yadi prītiḥ samutpannā mayi te vibudheśvara | vakṣyāmi kuru me satyam vacanaṃ vadatāṃ vara || 120.4 ||

"O lord of the wise, if love for me has truly arisen in you, then I shall speak - O foremost of the eloquent, make this word of mine come true.

Shloka 5 (yuddha.120.5)

mama hetoḥ parākrāntā ye gatā yamasādanam | te sarve jīvitaṃ prāpya samuttiṣṭhantu vānarāḥ || 120.5 ||

Let all those valiant vanaras who, for my sake, went to the abode of Death, regain their lives and rise up again.

Shloka 6 (yuddha.120.6)

matkṛte viprayuktā ye putrairdāraiśca vānarāḥ | tān prītamanasaḥ sarvān draṣṭumicchāmi mānada || 120.6 ||

O bestower of honour, I wish to see, with a glad heart, all those vanaras who, for my sake, were parted from their sons and their wives.

Shloka 7 (yuddha.120.7)

vikrāntāścāpi śūrāśca na mṛtyuṃ gaṇayanti ca | kṛtayatnā vipannāśca jīvayainān puraṃdara || 120.7 ||

Valiant and heroic, they took no account of death; O Purandara, restore to life those who strove with all their might and perished.

Shloka 8 (yuddha.120.8)

matpriyeṣvabhiraktāśca na mṛtyuṃ gaṇayanti ye | tvatprasādātsameyuste varametamahaṃ vṛṇe || 120.8 ||

Those who, devoted to my cause, gave no thought to death - let them, by your grace, be reunited with life; this boon alone I ask of you.

Shloka 9 (yuddha.120.9)

akāle cāpi puṣpāṇi mūlāni ca phalāni ca | nadyaśca vimalāstatra tiṣṭheyuryatra vānarāḥ || 120.10 ||

Wherever those vanaras may dwell, let flowers, roots, and fruits appear even out of season, and let clear-flowing rivers be there.

Shloka 11 (yuddha.120.11)

śrutvā tu vacanaṃ tasya rāghavasya mahātmanaḥ | mahendraḥ pratyuvācedaṃ vacanaṃ prītisaṃyutam || 120.11 ||

Hearing this speech of the great-souled Raghava, Mahendra, filled with affection, replied thus -

Shloka 12 (yuddha.120.12)

mahānayaṃ varastāta yastvayokto raghuttama | dvirmayā noktapūrvaṃ ca tasmādetadbhaviṣyati || 120.12 ||

"O dear one, foremost of the Raghus, this boon you have asked is a great one; never before have I gone back on my word twice, so this shall come to be exactly as you wish.

Shloka 13 (yuddha.120.13)

samuttiṣṭhantu te sarve hatā ye yudhi rākṣasaiḥ | ṛkṣāśca saha gopucchairnikṛttānanabāhavaḥ || 120.13 ||

Let all those slain in battle by the rakshasas, and those bears whose faces and arms were severed, rise up again along with the long-tailed monkeys.

Shloka 14 (yuddha.120.14)

nīrujo nirvraṇāścaiva saṃpannabalapauruṣāḥ | samutthāsyanti harayaḥ suptā nidrākṣaye yathā || 120.14 ||

As men rise from sleep when it ends, so shall these vanaras arise, free from sickness, free from wounds, and endowed once more with strength and valour.

Shloka 15 (yuddha.120.15)

suhṛdbhirbāndhavaiścaiva jñātibhiḥ svajanena ca | sarva eva sameṣyanti saṃyuktāḥ parayā mudā || 120.15 ||

All of them shall be reunited, with the greatest joy, with their friends, kinsmen, relatives, and family members.

Shloka 16 (yuddha.120.16)

akāle puṣpaśabalāḥ phalavantaśca pādapāḥ | bhaviṣyanti maheṣvāsa nadyaśca salilāyutāḥ || 120.16 ||

O wielder of the mighty bow, even out of season the trees shall be laden with colourful flowers and fruits, and the rivers shall flow ever full of water.

Shloka 17 (yuddha.120.17)

savraṇaiḥ prathamaṃ gātrairidānīṃ nirvraṇaiḥ samaiḥ | tataḥ samutthitāḥ sarve suptveva hariyūthapāḥ | babhūvurvānarāḥ sarve kiṃ nvetaditi vismitāḥ || 120.17 ||

Limbs that had first been covered with wounds now became even and unblemished; then all those monkey-troop-leaders rose up as though waking from sleep,

Shloka 18 (yuddha.120.18)

kākutthsaṃ paripūrṇārthaṃ dṛṣṭvā sarve surottamāḥ | abruvan paramaprītāḥ stutvā rāmaṃ salakṣmaṇam || 120.18 ||

and all the vanaras, astonished, cried out "What has happened!" Seeing that Kakutstha's wish had been fully granted, all those foremost of gods,

Shloka 19 (yuddha.120.19)

gacchāyodhyāmito rājan visarjaya ca vānarān | maithilīṃ sāntvayasvaināmanuraktāṃ yaśasvinīm || 120.19 ||

greatly delighted, praised Rama and Lakshmana and said: "O king, proceed now from here to Ayodhya, and let the vanaras take their leave.

Shloka 20 (yuddha.120.20)

bhrātaraṃ bharataṃ paśya tvacchokādvratacāriṇam || 120.20 ||

Console the illustrious and devoted Maithili; behold your brother Bharata, who through grief for you has taken up the life of an ascetic,

Shloka 21 (yuddha.120.21)

śatrughnaṃ ca mahātmānaṃ mātṝḥ sarvāḥ paraṃtapa | abhiṣecaya cātmānam paurāngatvā praharṣaya || 120.21 ||

and the great-souled Shatrughna, and all your mothers too, O scorcher of foes; have yourself consecrated, and going there, bring joy to the citizens.

Shloka 22 (yuddha.120.22)

evamuktvā sahasrākṣo rāmaṃ saumitriṇā saha | vimānaiḥ sūryasaṃkāśairyayau hṛṣṭaḥ suraiḥ saha || 120.22 ||

Having thus spoken to Rama and Lakshmana, thousand-eyed Indra, rejoicing, departed together with the other gods in aerial cars radiant as the sun.

Shloka 23 (yuddha.120.23)

abhivādya ca kākutthsaḥ sarvāṃstāṃstridaśottamān | lakṣmaṇena saha bhrātrā vāsamājñāpayattadā || 120.23 ||

Then, having saluted all those foremost of gods, Kakutstha, together with his brother Lakshmana, ordered all the vanaras to take rest, each in his own place.

Shloka 24 (yuddha.120.24)

tatastu sā lakṣmaṇarāmapālitā | mahācamūrhṛṣṭajanā yaśasvinī | śriyā jvalantī virarāja sarvato | niśā praṇīteva hi śītaraśminā || 120.24 ||

Thereupon that illustrious and mighty army, its people rejoicing, protected by Lakshmana and Rama, shone resplendent on every side with its own splendour, like a night lit up by the cool-rayed moon.
