Sarga 33All sargasSarga 35

Shloka 1 (yuddha.34.1)

atha tām jāta samtāpām tena vākyena moditām | saramā hlādayām āsa mahīṃ dagdhāmivāmbhasā | || 34.1 ||

Then Sarama gladdened Sita, who had been born into anguish, with those words, comforting her as rain refreshes parched earth.

Shloka 2 (yuddha.34.2)

tatas tasyā hitam sakhyāś cikīrṣantī sakhī vacaḥ | uvāca kāle kālajnā smita pūrva abhibhāṣiṇī | || 34.2 ||

Then, wishing to serve her friend's good, that companion, skilled in knowing the right moment, spoke, smiling as she began:

Shloka 3 (yuddha.34.3)

utsaheyam aham gatvā tvad vākyam asita īkṣaṇe | nivedya kuśalam rāme praticcannā nivartitum | || 34.3 ||

"O dark-eyed one, I am able to go, deliver your message to Rama, and inform him of your welfare, and return again unseen.

Shloka 4 (yuddha.34.4)

na hi me kramamāṇāyā nirālambe vihāyasi | samartho gatim anvetum pavano garuḍo api vā | || 34.4 ||

For as I move through the unsupported sky, neither the wind-god nor even Garuda is able to keep pace with my flight.

Shloka 5 (yuddha.34.5)

evam bruvāṇām tām sītā saramām punar abravīt | madhuram ślakṣṇayā vācā pūrva śoka abhipannayā | || 34.5 ||

To Sarama speaking thus, Sita replied again, in a voice now sweet and gentle, though it had earlier been overtaken by grief.

Shloka 6 (yuddha.34.6)

samarthā gaganam gantum api vā tvam rasā talam | avagaccāmy akartavyam kartavyam te mad antare | || 34.6 ||

"You are capable of going even to heaven, or to the depths of the netherworld. Understand today the task that must be done by you for my sake.

Shloka 7 (yuddha.34.7)

mat priyam yadi kartavyam yadi buddhiḥ sthirā tava | jnātum iccāmi tam gatvā kim karoti iti rāvaṇaḥ | || 34.7 ||

If it is your wish to do me a kindness, and your resolve is firm, I wish you would go and learn what it is that Ravana is doing.

Shloka 8 (yuddha.34.8)

sa hi māyā balaḥ krūro rāvaṇaḥ śatru rāvaṇaḥ | mām mohayati duṣṭa ātmā pīta mātrā iva vāruṇī | || 34.8 ||

For that Ravana - possessed of the strength of illusion, cruel, the enemy who makes his foes weep, his mind corrupt - has bewildered me, as wine bewilders one the very moment it is drunk."

Shloka 9 (yuddha.34.9)

tarjāpayati mām nityam bhartsāpayati ca asakrt | rākṣasībhiḥ sughorābhir yā mām rakṣanti nityaśaḥ | || 34.9 ||

"He continually threatens and repeatedly reviles me, through those most dreadful ogresses who forever guard me.

Shloka 10 (yuddha.34.10)

udvignā śankitā ca asmi na ca svastham mano mama | tad bhayāc ca aham udvignā;aśoka vanikām gatāḥ | || 34.10 ||

I am anxious and fearful, and my mind finds no peace; and it is out of fear of him that I remain, anxious, within this Ashoka grove.

Shloka 11 (yuddha.34.11)

yadi nāma kathā tasya niścitam vā api yad bhavet | nivedayethāḥ sarvam tat paro me syād anugrahaḥ | || 34.11 ||

If ever you should learn of what he has said, or whatever he may have resolved, and tell it all to me, that would be a very great kindness to me."

Shloka 12 (yuddha.34.12)

sāpyevam bruvatīm sītām saramā valgu bhāṣiṇī | uvāca vacanam tasyāḥ spṛśantī bāṣpa viklavam | || 34.12 ||

Then Sarama, the sweet-spoken one, wiping her friend's face, wet as it was with tears, replied to Sita, who had spoken thus:

Shloka 13 (yuddha.34.13)

eṣa te yady abhiprāyas tasmād gaccāmi jānaki | gṛhya śatror abhiprāyam upāvrttām ca paśya mām | || 34.13 ||

"If this indeed is your wish, O Janaki, then I shall go for that very reason. Having grasped the enemy's intent, I shall return to you, O Maithili."

Shloka 14 (yuddha.34.14)

evam uktvā tato gatvā samīpam tasya rakṣasaḥ | śuśrāva kathitam tasya rāvaṇasya samantriṇaḥ | || 34.14 ||

Having spoken thus, she then went near to that demon, and heard all that was said by Ravana in council with his ministers.

Shloka 15 (yuddha.34.15)

sā śrutvā niścayam tasya niścayajnā durātmanaḥ | punar eva agamat kṣipram aśoka vanikām tadā | || 34.15 ||

She, skilled at learning such resolves, having heard the decision of that wicked one, swiftly returned once more to that lovely Ashoka grove.

Shloka 16 (yuddha.34.16)

sā praviṣṭā punas tatra dadarśa janaka ātmajām | pratīkṣamāṇām svām eva bhraṣṭa padmām iva śriyam | || 34.16 ||

Entering there once again, she saw the daughter of Janaka, waiting only for her, like Shri, the goddess of fortune, bereft of her lotus.

Shloka 17 (yuddha.34.17)

tām tu sītā punaḥ prāptām saramām valgu bhāṣiṇīm | pariṣvajya ca susnigdham dadau ca svayam āsanam | || 34.17 ||

Sita, seeing her sweet-voiced friend Sarama returned once more, embraced her tenderly and herself offered her a seat.

Shloka 18 (yuddha.34.18)

iha āsīnā sukham sarvam ākhyāhi mama tattvataḥ | krūrasya niścayam tasya rāvaṇasya durātmanaḥ | || 34.18 ||

"Sit here comfortably and tell me truly everything - the resolve of that cruel and wicked Ravana."

Shloka 19 (yuddha.34.19)

evam uktā tu saramā sītayā vepamānayā | kathitam sarvam ācaṣta rāvaṇasya samantriṇaḥ | || 34.19 ||

So questioned, Sarama then related to the trembling Sita all that had been said in the council of Ravana and his ministers.

Shloka 20 (yuddha.34.20)

jananyā rākṣasa indro vai tvan mokṣa artham bṛhad vacaḥ | aviddhena ca vaidehi mantri vṛddhena bodhitaḥ | || 34.20 ||

"O Vaidehi, Ravana's own mother, and Aviddha, his aged minister, spoke great words urging him toward your release.

Shloka 21 (yuddha.34.21)

dīyatām abhisatkrtya manuja indrāya maithilī | nidarśanam te paryāptam jana sthāne yad adbhutam | || 34.21 ||

'Let Maithili be honorably restored to the lord of men. The wonder that occurred in Janasthana should be lesson enough for you.

Shloka 22 (yuddha.34.22)

langhanam ca samudrasya darśanam ca hanūmataḥ | vadham ca rakṣasām yuddhe kaḥ kuryān mānuṣo bhuvi | || 34.22 ||

What mortal on this earth could have crossed the ocean, could Hanuman have been sighted here, or could the demons have been slain in battle, as has now occurred?'

Shloka 23 (yuddha.34.23)

evam sa mantri vṛddhaiśca mātrā ca bahu bhāṣitaḥ | na tvām utsahate moktum artahm artha paro yathā | || 34.23 ||

"Though thus admonished at length by his aged ministers and by his mother, he does not resolve to release you, no more than a miser lets go of his wealth.

Shloka 24 (yuddha.34.24)

na utsahaty amrto moktum yuddhe tvām iti maithili | sāmātyasya nṛśaṃsasya niścayo hy eṣa vartate | || 34.24 ||

'I will not release her without dying in battle,' O Maithili - such is the fixed resolve of that cruel one, together with his ministers.

Shloka 25 (yuddha.34.25)

tad eṣā susthirā buddhirmṛtyu lobhād upasthitā | bhayān na śaktas tvām moktum anirastas tu samyuge | || 34.25 ||

This obstinate resolve of his has arisen out of a lust for death; it is not out of mere fear that he is unable to release you unless first overcome in war.

Shloka 26 (yuddha.34.26)

rākṣasānām ca sarveṣām ātmanaś ca vadhena hi | nihatya rāvaṇam samkhye sarvathā niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ | || 34.26 ||

Only by the destruction of all the demons and of himself, having slain Ravana in battle utterly with his sharp arrows, O dark-eyed one -

Shloka 27 (yuddha.34.27)

pratineṣyati rāmas tvām ayodhyām asita īkṣaṇe | etasminn antare śabdo bherī śankha samākulaḥ | || 34.27 ||

- will Rama surely bring you back to Ayodhya." At that very moment, a sound was heard - the tumult of war-drums and conch-shells, of all the armies, making the very earth tremble.

Shloka 28 (yuddha.34.28)

śruto vai sarva sainyānām kampayan dharaṇī talam | śrutvā tu tam vānara sainya śabdam | lankā gatā rākṣasa rāja bhrtyāḥ | naṣṭa ojaso dainya parīta ceṣṭāḥ | śreyo na paśyanti nrpasya doṣaiḥ | || 34.28 ||

Hearing that roar of the monkey army, the servants of the demon-king stationed in Lanka - their vigor destroyed, their movements overcome by despondency - could see no good fortune, owing to the fault of their king.
