Shloka 1 (yuddha.35.1)

tena śankha vimiśreṇa bherī śabdena rāghavaḥ | upayato mahā bāhū rāmaḥ para puram jayaḥ | || 35.1 ||

With that sound - the roll of kettle-drums mingled with the blast of conches - the mighty-armed Rama, conqueror of hostile cities, advanced.

Shloka 2 (yuddha.35.2)

tam ninādam niśamya atha rāvaṇo rākṣasa īśvaraḥ | muhūrtam dhyānam āsthāya sacivān abhyudaikṣata | || 35.2 ||

Hearing that roar, Ravana, lord of demons, paused a moment in thought, and then looked toward his ministers.

Shloka 3 (yuddha.35.3)

atha tān sacivāṃs tatra sarvān ābhāṣya rāvaṇaḥ | sabhām samnādayan sarvām ity uvāca mahā balaḥ | || 35.3 ||

Then that mighty Ravana, addressing all his ministers gathered there, making the whole hall resound, spoke as follows:

Shloka 4 (yuddha.35.4)

jagatsaṃtāpanaḥ krūro'garhayan rākṣaseśvaraḥ | taraṇam sāgarasya api vikramam bala saṃcayam | || 35.4 ||

That cruel lord of demons, the tormentor of the world, spoke without reproach of Rama's crossing of the ocean, his prowess, and his gathered strength:

Shloka 5 (yuddha.35.5)

yad uktavanto rāmasya bhavantas tan mayā śrutam | bhavataścāpyaham vedmi yuddhe satyaparākramān | || 35.5 ||

"I have heard all that you have told me of Rama; and I too know you to be truly valiant in battle.

Shloka 6 (yuddha.35.6)

tūṣṇīkānīkṣatonyonyam viditvām rāmavikramam | tatas tu sumahā prājno mālyavān nāma rākṣasaḥ | || 35.6 ||

Yet, aware now of Rama's prowess, you all merely look at one another in silence." Then that highly wise demon named Malyavan -

Shloka 7 (yuddha.35.7)

rāvaṇasya vacaḥ śrutvā mātuḥ paitāmaho abravīt | vidyāsvabhivinīto yo rājā rājan naya anugaḥ | || 35.7 ||

- his mother's grandfather - hearing Ravana's words, spoke thus: "O king, that ruler who is well trained in the sciences and follows the path of prudence -

Shloka 8 (yuddha.35.8)

sa śāsti ciram aiśvaryam arīṃśca kurute vaśe | saṃdadhāno hi kālena vigṛhṇaṃsaḥ cāribhiḥ saha | || 35.8 ||

- he governs his sovereignty for long, and brings even his enemies under his sway; making peace with foes at the fitting time, or waging war at the fitting time -

Shloka 9 (yuddha.35.9)

sva pakṣa vardhanam kurvan mahad aiśvaryam aśnute | hīyamānena kartavyo rājnā saṃdhiḥ samena ca | || 35.9 ||

- increasing his own party's strength, he attains great power. By a king who is weaker, or even equal, peace should be made;

Shloka 10 (yuddha.35.10)

na śatrum avamanyeta jyāyān kurvīta vigraham | tanmahyam rocate saṃdhiḥ saha rāmeṇa rāvaṇa | || 35.10 ||

one should never underrate the enemy; the stronger one should indeed make war. For that reason, alliance with Rama is what I favor, O Ravana.

Shloka 11 (yuddha.35.11)

yad artham abhiyuktāḥ sma sītā tasmai pradīyatām | tasya deva ṛṣayaḥ sarve gandharvāsaḥ ca jaya eṣiṇaḥ | || 35.11 ||

Let Sita, for whose sake you are now under attack, be given back to him. All the celestial seers and the Gandharvas alike wish for his victory -

Shloka 12 (yuddha.35.12)

virodham mā gamas tena saṃdhis te tena rocatām | asṛjad bhagavān pakṣau dvāv eva hi pitāmahaḥ | || 35.12 ||

do not incur enmity with them; let alliance with him be agreeable to you. The Lord Brahma, indeed, created only two orders of beings -

Shloka 13 (yuddha.35.13)

surāṇām asurāṇām ca dharma adharmau tad āśrayau | dharmo hi śrūyate pakṣaḥ surāṇām ca mahātmanām | || 35.13 ||

- the gods and the demons - and righteousness and unrighteousness are their respective refuges. Righteousness, it is said, is the side taken by the great-souled celestials;

Shloka 14 (yuddha.35.14)

adharmo rakṣasām pakṣohya asurāṇām ca rāvaṇa | dharmo vai grasate adharmam tataḥ kṛtam abhūd yugam | || 35.14 ||

unrighteousness, O Ravana, is truly the side of the rakshasas and the asuras. When righteousness swallows unrighteousness, that becomes the Krita Yuga -

Shloka 15 (yuddha.35.15)

adharmo grasate dharmam tatas tiṣyaḥ pravartate | tat tvayā caratā lokān dharmo vinihato mahān | || 35.15 ||

- and when unrighteousness swallows righteousness, then the age of Tishya (Kali) sets in. Therefore, as you have roamed through the worlds, great righteousness has been struck down by you,

Shloka 16 (yuddha.35.16)

adharmaḥ pragṛhītasaḥ ca tena asmad balinaḥ pare | sa pramādād vivṛddhas te adharmo ahir grasate hi naḥ | || 35.16 ||

and unrighteousness has been fostered instead - for that reason, our enemies have grown stronger than us. Through your negligence, that unrighteousness, now well-grown,

Shloka 17 (yuddha.35.17)

vivardhayati pakṣam ca surāṇām sura bhāvanaḥ | viṣayeṣu prasaktena yat kiṃcit kāriṇā tvayā | || 35.17 ||

is indeed devouring us like a serpent, favoring the gods and swelling their party's strength. By you, engrossed in sense-pleasures, doing whatever you please -

Shloka 18 (yuddha.35.18)

ऱ्ṣīṇām agni kalpānām udvego janito mahān | teṣām prabhāvo durdharṣaḥ pradīpta;iva pāvakaḥ | || 35.18 ||

a great alarm has been generated among the sages, who resemble blazing fire itself. Their power is unassailable, like a fire ablaze;

Shloka 19 (yuddha.35.19)

tapasā bhāvita ātmāno dharmasya anugrahe ratāḥ | mukhyair yajnair yajanty ete nityam tais tair dvijātayaḥ | || 35.19 ||

their minds purified by austerity, devoted to the furtherance of righteousness, these twice-born ones worship the gods through their principal sacrifices,

Shloka 20 (yuddha.35.20)

juhvaty agnīṃsaḥ ca vidhivad vedāṃsaḥ ca uccair adhīyate | abhibhūya ca rakṣāṃsi brahma ghoṣān udairayan | || 35.20 ||

pour oblations into the sacred fires with due rites, recite the Vedas aloud, and, having overpowered the demons, raised the sound of Vedic chanting -

Shloka 21 (yuddha.35.21)

diśo vipradrutāḥ sarve stanayitnur iva uṣṇage | ṛṣīṇām agni kalpānām agni hotra samutthitaḥ | || 35.21 ||

hearing which, all demons fled in every direction, like thunderclouds scattered in the heat of summer. The smoke rising from the sacred fire of those sages, who resemble fire itself,

Shloka 22 (yuddha.35.22)

ādatte rakṣasām tejo dhūmo vyāpya diśo daśa | teṣu teṣu ca deśeṣu puṇyeṣu ca dṛḍha vrataiḥ | || 35.22 ||

spreading over the ten directions, draws away the very power of the demons. In those various sacred lands, by ascetics of unwavering vows -

Shloka 23 (yuddha.35.23)

caryamāṇam tapas tīvram samtāpayati rākṣasān | devadānavayakṣebho gṛhītaśca varastvayā | || 35.23 ||

the severe austerity practiced there torments the demons. A boon was indeed received by you from the gods, the danavas and the yakshas -

Shloka 24 (yuddha.35.24)

manuṣyā vānarā ṛkṣā golāṅgūlā mahābalāḥ | balavanta ihāgamya garjanti dṛḍhavikramāḥ | || 35.24 ||

but now men, bears, and monkeys, mighty and firm in valor, have come here and roar aloud.

Shloka 25 (yuddha.35.25)

utpātān vividhān dṛṣṭvā ghorān bahu vidhāṃs tathā | vināśam anupaśyāmi sarveṣām rakṣasām aham | || 35.25 ||

Having witnessed manifold and terrible portents of every kind, I foresee the destruction of all the demons.

Shloka 26 (yuddha.35.26)

rudatām vāhanānām ca prapatanty asra bindavaḥ | rajodhvastā vivarṇāsaḥ ca na prabhānti yathā puram | || 35.27 ||

Teardrops fall from the weeping draft-animals; discoloured, covered with dust, they no longer gleam as before.

Shloka 28 (yuddha.35.28)

Dark women, baring their pale teeth, stand laughing in front, robbing houses even as they speak of it in dreams.

Shloka 30 (yuddha.35.30)

gṛhāṇām bali karmāṇi śvānaḥ paryupabhunjate | kharā goṣu prajāyante mūṣikā nakulaiḥ saha | || 35.30 ||

Dogs devour the sacrificial offerings set out in homes; donkeys are born of cows, and mice of mongooses.

Shloka 31 (yuddha.35.31)

mārjārā dvīpibhiḥ sārdham sūkarāḥ śunakaiḥ saha | kimnarā rākṣasaisaḥ ca api sameyur mānuṣaiḥ saha | || 35.31 ||

Cats mate with leopards, pigs with dogs; even Kinnaras consort with rakshasas, and with men as well.

Shloka 32 (yuddha.35.32)

White pigeons with red feet, driven on by Time, wander about, foretelling the destruction of the demons.

Shloka 33 (yuddha.35.33)

Shloka 34 (yuddha.35.34)

Birds and all the wild creatures cry, turning their faces to the sun; a grim, monstrous, shaven-headed being, dark and tawny -

Shloka 35 (yuddha.35.35)

We deem this Rama to be Vishnu himself, dwelling in human form; this Raghava, of unwavering prowess, is surely no mere man -

Shloka 37 (yuddha.35.37)

he by whom that most wondrous bridge was built across the very sea. Make peace, O Ravana, with Rama, the king of men; having understood his deeds, let that be done which is best for the future, after due deliberation.

Shloka 38 (yuddha.35.38)
