The blare of conch and kettledrum, and the lion-roars of the swift ones, echoed through earth, sky and ocean —

एतस्मिन्नन्तरे घोरः संग्रामः समपद्यत। रक्षसां वानराणां च यथा देवासुरे पुरा ॥ 42.41 ॥

etasminnantare ghoraḥ saṃgrāmaḥ samapadyata| rakṣasāṃ vānarāṇāṃ ca yathā devāsure purā || 42.41 ||

Meanwhile, between the rakshasas and monkeys there broke out a battle as fearsome as that which once raged between the gods and demons.

Shloka 42 (yuddha.42.42)

ते गदाभिः प्रदीप्ताभिः शक्तिशूलपरश्वधैः। निजघ्नुर्वानरान् सर्वान् कथयन्तः स्वविक्रमान् ॥ 42.42 ॥

te gadābhiḥ pradīptābhiḥ śaktiśūlaparaśvadhaiḥ| nijaghnurvānarān sarvān kathayantaḥ svavikramān || 42.42 ||

With blazing maces, javelins, tridents and axes, boasting of their own prowess, they fell to striking down the monkeys.

Shloka 43 (yuddha.42.43)

rājā jayati sugrīva iti śabdo mahānabhūt| rājañjayajayetyuktvā svasvanāmakathāṃ tataḥ || 42.44 ||

"Victory to King Sugriva!" — such was the mighty cry that rose; crying "Victory, victory, O King!", each thereafter called out his own name.

Shloka 45 (yuddha.42.45)

राक्षसास्त्वपरे भीमाः प्राकारस्था महीं गतान्। वानरान् भिन्दिपालैश्च शूलैश्चैव व्यदारयन् ॥ 42.45 ॥

rākṣasāstvapare bhīmāḥ prākārasthā mahīṃ gatān| vānarān bhindipālaiśca śūlaiścaiva vyadārayan || 42.45 ||

Other fierce rakshasas, with javelins and spears, tore apart those monkeys who had come down from the rampart onto the ground.

Shloka 46 (yuddha.42.46)

The greatly enraged monkeys likewise, leaping into the air, hurled to the ground, with their own arms, those rakshasas who had come down from the rampart.

Shloka 47 (yuddha.42.47)

स सम्प्रहारस्तुमुलो मांसशोणितकर्दमः। रक्षसां वानराणां च सम्बभूवाद्भुतोपमः ॥ 42.47 ॥

sa samprahārastumulo māṃsaśoṇitakardamaḥ| rakṣasāṃ vānarāṇāṃ ca sambabhūvādbhutopamaḥ || 42.47 ||

That tumultuous combat between the rakshasas and the monkeys, mired in flesh and blood, became a spectacle of wonder unlike any other.
