Having thus dismissed those counsellors, and when the rakshasas had gone each to his assigned post, he tore into the ocean-like flood of monkeys, as a great sea-monster tears into the full flood of the ocean.

Shloka 36 (yuddha.59.36)

sa sāyako rāvaṇabāhumuktaḥ śakrāśaniprakhyavapuḥprakāśam| sugrīvamāsādya bibheda vegād guheritā krauñcamivograśaktiḥ || 59.40 ||

That shaft, loosed from Ravana's arm, radiant of form like Indra's thunderbolt, reaching Sugriva, pierced him with its force, as a fierce dart hurled by Guha once pierced the Krauncha mountain.

Shloka 41 (yuddha.59.41)

Hearing Hanuman's words, Ravana of terrible prowess, his eyes reddened with fury, spoke this reply.

Shloka 58 (yuddha.59.58)

kṣipraṃ prahara niḥśaṅkaṃ sthirāṃ kīrtimavāpnuhi| tatastvāṃ jñātavikrāntaṃ nāśayiṣyāmi vānara || 59.58 ||

"Strike quickly, without hesitation, and win lasting fame. Then, once your prowess is known, I shall destroy you, O monkey."

Shloka 59 (yuddha.59.59)

Hearing Ravana's words, the son of the Wind spoke: "Remember, I have already slain your son Aksha before this."

Shloka 60 (yuddha.59.60)

Thus addressed, the mighty-splendored Ravana, lord of the rakshasas, valiant, struck the son of the Wind on the chest with his open palm.

Shloka 61 (yuddha.59.61)

sa talābhihatastena cacāla ca muhurmuhuḥ| sthito muhūrtaṃ tejasvī sthairyaṃ kṛtvā mahāmatiḥ || 59.61 ||

Struck by that slap, he reeled again and again. Then, the splendorous and wise one, steadying himself, stood firm for a moment.

Shloka 62 (yuddha.59.62)

ājaghāna ca saṃkruddhastalenaivāmaradviṣam| tataḥ sa tenābhihato vānareṇa mahātmanā || 59.62 ||

And, greatly enraged, he struck that enemy of the gods with a slap in return. Struck by that great-souled monkey --

Shloka 63 (yuddha.59.63)

daśagrīvaḥ samādhūto yathā bhūmitale'calaḥ| saṃgrāme taṃ tathā dṛṣṭvā rāvaṇaṃ talatāḍitam || 59.63 ||

-- ten-necked Ravana reeled, like a mountain shaken upon the earth. Seeing Ravana thus struck and reeling in that battle --

Shloka 64 (yuddha.59.64)

ṛṣayo vānarāḥ siddhā nedurdevāḥ sahāsuraiḥ| athāśvasya mahātejā rāvaṇo vākyamabravīt || 59.64 ||

-- the sages, monkeys, siddhas, and gods together with the asuras cried out. Then, having recovered his breath, the mighty-splendored Ravana spoke these words.

Shloka 65 (yuddha.59.65)

sādhu vānara vīryeṇa ślāghanīyo'si me ripuḥ| rāvaṇenaivamuktastu mārutirvākyamabravīt || 59.65 ||

"Well done, monkey! By your valor you are a foe worthy of praise." Thus addressed by Ravana, the son of the Wind replied.

Shloka 66 (yuddha.59.66)

dhigastu mama vīryasya yat tvaṃ jīvasi rāvaṇa| sakṛt tu praharedānīṃ durbuddhe kiṃ vikatthase || 59.66 ||

"Shame on my own valor, Ravana, that you still live! Strike me now with all your force -- why do you boast, O foolish one?"

Shloka 67 (yuddha.59.67)

tatastvāṃ māmako muṣṭirnayiṣyati yamakṣayam| tato mārutivākyena kopastasya prajajvale || 59.67 ||

"Then my fist shall send you to Yama's abode!" At Maruti's words, his fury blazed up.

Shloka 68 (yuddha.59.68)

saṃraktanayano yatnānmuṣṭimāvṛtya dakṣiṇam| pātayāmāsa vegena vānarorasi vīryavān || 59.68 ||

His eyes reddened, he clenched his right fist with effort, and, valiant, brought it down with force upon the monkey's chest.

Shloka 69 (yuddha.59.69)

hanūmān vakṣasi vyūḍhe saṃcacāla punaḥ punaḥ| vihvalaṃ tu tadā dṛṣṭvā hanūmantaṃ mahābalam || 59.69 ||

Hanuman, struck upon his broad chest, reeled again and again. Seeing the mighty Hanuman thus shaken --

Shloka 70 (yuddha.59.70)

rathenātirathaḥ śīghraṃ nīlaṃ prati samabhyagāt| rākṣasānāmadhipatirdaśagrīvaḥ pratāpavān || 59.70 ||

-- the mighty charioteer, the powerful ten-necked lord of the rakshasas, swiftly turned his chariot toward Nila.

Shloka 71 (yuddha.59.71)

pannagapratimairbhīmaiḥ paramarmābhibhedanaiḥ| śarairādīpayāmāsa nīlaṃ haricamūpatim || 59.71 ||

With terrible, serpent-like arrows that pierced to the vital core, he set ablaze Nila, the commander of the monkey host.

Shloka 72 (yuddha.59.72)

sa śaraughasamāyasto nīlo haricamūpatiḥ| kareṇaikena śailāgraṃ rakṣodhipataye'sṛjat || 59.72 ||

Nila, commander of the monkey host, overwhelmed by that flood of arrows, hurled a mountain-peak with one hand at the lord of the rakshasas.

Shloka 73 (yuddha.59.73)

hanūmānapi tejasvī samāśvasto mahāmanāḥ| viprekṣamāṇo yuddhepsuḥ saroṣamidamabravīt || 59.73 ||

Hanuman too, splendorous and great-minded, having recovered, watching intently and eager for battle, spoke these words in anger.

Shloka 74 (yuddha.59.74)

nīlena saha saṃyuktaṃ rāvaṇaṃ rākṣaseśvaram| anyena yudhyamānasya na yuktamabhidhāvanam || 59.74 ||

"It is not proper for another to rush in against Ravana, lord of the rakshasas, while he is already engaged in combat with Nila."

Shloka 75 (yuddha.59.75)

rāvaṇo'tha mahātejāstaṃ śṛṅgaṃ saptabhiḥ śaraiḥ| ājaghāna sutīkṣṇāgraistad vikīrṇaṃ papāta ha || 59.75 ||

Then the mighty-splendored Ravana struck that mountain-peak with seven extremely sharp-tipped arrows, and it shattered and fell.

Shloka 76 (yuddha.59.76)

tad vikīrṇaṃ gireḥ śṛṅgaṃ dṛṣṭvā haricamūpatiḥ| kālāgniriva jajvāla kopena paravīrahā || 59.76 ||

Seeing that mountain-peak shattered, the commander of the monkey host, slayer of enemy heroes, blazed up with fury like the fire of doomsday.

Shloka 77 (yuddha.59.77)

so'śvakarṇadrumān śālāṃścūtāṃścāpi supuṣpitān| anyāṃśca vividhān vṛkṣān nīlaścikṣepa saṃyuge || 59.77 ||

Nila hurled Ashvakarna trees, Sal trees, richly blossoming mango trees, and other trees of every kind into that battle.

Shloka 78 (yuddha.59.78)

sa tān vṛkṣān samāsādya praticiccheda rāvaṇaḥ| abhyavarṣacca ghoreṇa śaravarṣeṇa pāvakim || 59.78 ||

Ravana, as those trees reached him, cut them all down, and rained a terrible shower of arrows upon the son of Fire.

Shloka 79 (yuddha.59.79)

abhivṛṣṭaḥ śaraugheṇa megheneva mahācalaḥ| hrasvaṃ kṛtvā tato rūpaṃ dhvajāgre nipapāta ha || 59.79 ||

Rained upon by that flood of arrows as a great mountain is rained upon by a cloud, he shrank his form small and alighted upon the tip of Ravana's banner.

Shloka 80 (yuddha.59.80)

pāvakātmajamālokya dhvajāgre samavasthitam| jajvāla rāvaṇaḥ krodhāt tato nīlo nanāda ca || 59.80 ||

Seeing the son of Fire perched upon the tip of his banner, Ravana blazed with fury, and Nila then let out a roar.

Shloka 81 (yuddha.59.81)

dhvajāgre dhanuṣaścāgre kirīṭāgre ca taṃ harim| lakṣmaṇo'tha hanūmāṃśca rāmaścāpi suvismitāḥ || 59.81 ||

Lakshmana, Hanuman, and Rama, all three, watched in great astonishment as that monkey darted from the banner's tip, to the bow's tip, to the very tip of the crown.

Shloka 82 (yuddha.59.82)

rāvaṇo'pi mahātejāḥ kapilāghavavismitaḥ| astramāhārayāmāsa dīptamāgneyamadbhutam || 59.82 ||

Ravana too, mighty-splendored, astonished at the monkey's agility, invoked the blazing and wondrous Agneya weapon.

Shloka 83 (yuddha.59.83)

tataste cukruśurhṛṣṭā labdhalakṣāḥ plavaṃgamāḥ| nīlalāghavasambhrāntaṃ dṛṣṭvā rāvaṇamāhave || 59.83 ||

Then, delighted, the monkeys, seeing their opportunity, cried out joyously, seeing Ravana bewildered by Nila's agility in that battle.

Shloka 84 (yuddha.59.84)

vānarāṇāṃ ca nādena saṃrabdho rāvaṇastadā| sambhramāviṣṭahṛdayo na kiṃcit pratyapadyata || 59.84 ||

Enraged by the monkeys' roaring, Ravana, his heart seized with confusion, could not decide upon any course.

Shloka 85 (yuddha.59.85)

āgneyenāpi saṃyuktaṃ gṛhītvā rāvaṇaḥ śaram| dhvajaśīrṣasthitaṃ nīlamudaikṣata niśācaraḥ || 59.85 ||

Taking up an arrow charged with the Agneya weapon, the night-ranger Ravana gazed upon Nila, seated atop his banner.

Shloka 86 (yuddha.59.86)

tato'bravīnmahātejā rāvaṇo rākṣaseśvaraḥ| kape lāghavayukto'si māyayā parayā saha || 59.86 ||

Then the mighty-splendored Ravana, lord of the rakshasas, said: "Monkey, you are skilled indeed in agility, joined with the highest illusion."

Shloka 87 (yuddha.59.87)

jīvitaṃ khalu rakṣasva yadi śakto'si vānara| tāni tānyātmarūpāṇi sṛjasi tvamanekaśaḥ || 59.87 ||

"Guard your life now if you are able, O monkey, though you conjure so many forms of yourself in various ways."

Shloka 88 (yuddha.59.88)

tathāpi tvāṃ mayā muktaḥ sāyako'straprayojitaḥ| jīvitaṃ parirakṣantaṃ jīvitād bhraṃśayiṣyati || 59.88 ||

"Even so, this arrow, charged with a weapon and loosed by me, shall strip you of life even as you strive to guard it."

Shloka 89 (yuddha.59.89)

evamuktvā mahābāhū rāvaṇo rākṣaseśvaraḥ| saṃdhāya bāṇamastreṇa camūpatimatāḍayat || 59.89 ||

Having spoken thus, the mighty-armed Ravana, lord of the rakshasas, fitted the weapon-charged arrow and struck the army-commander.

Shloka 90 (yuddha.59.90)

so'stramuktena bāṇena nīlo vakṣasi tāḍitaḥ| nirdahyamānaḥ sahasā sa papāta mahītale || 59.90 ||

Struck on the chest by that weapon-loosed arrow, Nila, suddenly burning, fell to the ground.

Shloka 91 (yuddha.59.91)

pitṛmāhātmyasaṃyogādātmanaścāpi tejasā| jānubhyāmapatad bhūmau na tu prāṇairviyujyata || 59.91 ||

Through the greatness of his father's power, joined with his own inborn splendor, he fell to the ground upon his knees, but did not part from his life.

Shloka 92 (yuddha.59.92)

visaṃjñaṃ vānaraṃ dṛṣṭvā daśagrīvo raṇotsukaḥ| rathenāmbudanādena saumitrimabhidudruve || 59.92 ||

Seeing the monkey senseless, ten-necked Ravana, eager still for battle, charged in his cloud-thundering chariot at Lakshmana.

Shloka 93 (yuddha.59.93)

āsādya raṇamadhye taṃ vārayitvā sthito jvalan| dhanurvisphārayāmāsa rākṣasendraḥ pratāpavān || 59.93 ||

Reaching him in the midst of battle, halting there, blazing with fury, that powerful lord of the rakshasas twanged his bow.

Shloka 94 (yuddha.59.94)

tamāha saumitriradīnasattvo visphārayantaṃ dhanuraprameyam| avehi māmadya niśācarendra na vānarāṃstvaṃ pratiyoddhumarhasi || 59.94 ||

To him, twanging his measureless bow, the undaunted Lakshmana said: "Know me now, lord of the night-rangers; you are not fit to fight against these monkeys -- fight me instead."

Shloka 95 (yuddha.59.95)

sa tasya vākyaṃ pratipūrṇaghoṣaṃ jyāśabdamugraṃ ca niśamya rājā| āsādya saumitrimupasthitaṃ taṃ roṣānvitaṃ vācamuvāca rakṣaḥ || 59.95 ||

Hearing his full-throated words and the fierce twang of his bowstring, that rakshasa king, closing with Lakshmana who stood before him, spoke these wrathful words.

Shloka 96 (yuddha.59.96)

diṣṭyāsi me rāghava dṛṣṭimārgaṃ prāpto'ntagāmī viparītabuddhiḥ| asmin kṣaṇe yāsyasi mṛtyulokaṃ saṃsādyamāno mama bāṇajālaiḥ || 59.96 ||

"By good fortune, O Raghava, you of perverted judgment, heading toward your end, have come within my sight. This very moment, crushed by my nets of arrows, you shall go to the realm of death."

Shloka 97 (yuddha.59.97)

tamāha saumitriravismayāno garjantamuda‍vṛttaśitāgradaṃṣṭram| rājan na garjanti mahāprabhāvā vikatthase pāpakṛtāṃ variṣṭha || 59.97 ||

To him, roaring, his sharp fangs bared, the unshaken Lakshmana said: "O king, those of true greatness do not roar; you merely boast, O foremost of evildoers."

Shloka 98 (yuddha.59.98)

jānāmi vīryaṃ tava rākṣasendra balaṃ pratāpaṃ ca parākramaṃ ca| avasthito'haṃ śaracāpapāṇi- rāgaccha kiṃ moghavikatthanena || 59.98 ||

"I know your valor, O lord of rakshasas, your strength, your might, and your prowess. Here I stand, bow and arrow in hand -- come! What use is this empty boasting?"

Shloka 99 (yuddha.59.99)

sa evamuktaḥ kupitaḥ sasarja rakṣodhipaḥ sapta śarān supuṅkhān| tā~llakṣmaṇaḥ kāñcanacitrapuṅkhai- ściccheda bāṇairniśitāgradhāraiḥ || 59.99 ||

Thus addressed, the enraged lord of the rakshasas loosed seven well-feathered arrows. Lakshmana cut them all down with arrows bright with gold fletching and sharp of edge.

Shloka 100 (yuddha.59.100)

tān prekṣamāṇaḥ sahasā nikṛttān nikṛttabhogāniva pannagendrān| laṅkeśvaraḥ krodhavaśaṃ jagāma sasarja cānyān niśitān pṛṣatkān || 59.100 ||

Seeing those arrows suddenly cut down, like the severed coils of great serpents, the lord of Lanka fell into a rage, and loosed yet more sharp shafts.

Shloka 101 (yuddha.59.101)

Rama's younger brother rained a fierce shower of arrows from his bow, and with razor-tipped, crescent-headed, and broad-headed shafts, cut down those arrows, unshaken.

Shloka 102 (yuddha.59.102)

sa bāṇajālānyapi tāni tāni moghāni paśyaṃstridaśārirājaḥ| visismiye lakṣmaṇalāghavena punaśca bāṇān niśitān mumoca || 59.102 ||

That king, enemy of the gods, seeing those very networks of arrows rendered vain, was astonished at Lakshmana's swiftness, and again loosed sharp arrows.

Shloka 103 (yuddha.59.103)

sa lakṣmaṇaścāpi śitāñ śitāgrān mahendratulyo'śanibhīmavegān| saṃdhāya cāpe jvalanaprakāśān sasarja rakṣodhipatervadhāya || 59.103 ||

Lakshmana too, equal to Mahendra, fitting to his bow sharp, keen-edged arrows, fierce and swift as thunderbolts, blazing bright, loosed them for the destruction of the rakshasa lord.

Shloka 104 (yuddha.59.104)

sa tān praciccheda hi rākṣasendraḥ śitāñ śarāl~ lakṣmaṇamājaghāna| śareṇa kālāgnisamaprabheṇa svayaṃbhudattena lalāṭadeśe || 59.104 ||

That lord of the rakshasas cut down those sharp arrows, and struck Lakshmana upon the forehead with an arrow bright as the fire of doomsday, given to him by Brahma himself.

Shloka 105 (yuddha.59.105)

sa lakṣmaṇo rāvaṇasāyakārta- ścacāla cāpaṃ śithilaṃ pragṛhya| punaśca saṃjñāṃ pratilabhya kṛcchrā- cciccheda cāpaṃ tridaśendraśatroḥ || 59.105 ||

Lakshmana, pained by Ravana's shaft, reeled, his bow held loosely in his grip. Then, with difficulty regaining his senses, he cut down the bow of that enemy of the king of the gods.

Shloka 106 (yuddha.59.106)

nikṛttacāpaṃ tribhirājaghāna bāṇaistadā dāśarathiḥ śitāgraiḥ| sa sāyakārto vicacāla rājā kṛcchrācca saṃjñāṃ punarāsasāda || 59.106 ||

Then Dasharathi struck him, his bow now cut, with three sharp-tipped arrows. That king, pained by the shafts, reeled, and with difficulty recovered his senses once more.

Shloka 107 (yuddha.59.107)

sa kṛttacāpaḥ śaratāḍitaśca medārdragātro rudhirāvasiktaḥ| jagrāha śaktiṃ svayamugraśaktiḥ svayaṃbhudattāṃ yudhi devaśatruḥ || 59.107 ||

His bow cut, struck by arrows, his limbs wet with fat, drenched in blood, that enemy of the gods, himself of terrible power, seized in battle the divine spear given him by Brahma.

Shloka 108 (yuddha.59.108)

sa tāṃ sadhūmānalasaṃnikāśāṃ vitrāsanāṃ saṃyati vānarāṇām| cikṣepa śaktiṃ tarasā jvalantīṃ saumitraye rākṣasarāṣṭranāthaḥ || 59.108 ||

That lord of the rakshasa realm hurled that spear, resembling smoky flame, blazing, terrifying to the monkeys in that battle, with force at Lakshmana.

Shloka 109 (yuddha.59.109)

tāmāpatantīṃ bharatānujo'strai- rjaghāna bāṇaiśca hutāgnikalpaiḥ| tathāpi sā tasya viveśa śakti- rbhujāntaraṃ dāśaratherviśālam || 59.109 ||

Bharata's younger brother struck at it as it hurtled toward him, with weapons and arrows like blazing sacrificial fire; yet still that spear pierced into the broad chest of Dasharathi.

Shloka 110 (yuddha.59.110)

sa śaktimāñ śaktisamāhataḥ san jajvāla bhūmau sa raghupravīraḥ| taṃ vihvalantaṃ sahasābhyupetya jagrāha rājā tarasā bhujābhyām || 59.110 ||

That valiant Raghu hero, struck by the spear, though himself possessed of power, fell burning to the ground. The king, rushing suddenly to him as he lay reeling, seized him forcibly with both arms.

Shloka 111 (yuddha.59.111)

himavān mandaro merustrailokyaṃ vā sahāmaraiḥ| śakyaṃ bhujābhyāmuddhartuṃ na śakyo bharatānujaḥ || 59.111 ||

The Himalayas, Mandara, Meru, or even the three worlds with all their gods might be lifted by his arms -- yet Bharata's younger brother he could not lift.

Shloka 112 (yuddha.59.112)

śaktyā brāhmyā tu saumitristāḍito'pi stanāntare| viṣṇoramīmāṃsyabhāgamātmānaṃ pratyanusmarat || 59.112 ||

Though struck upon the chest by that Brahma-given spear, Lakshmana recalled within himself that he was a portion of Vishnu, beyond all measure or judgment.

Shloka 113 (yuddha.59.113)

tato dānavadarpaghnaṃ saumitriṃ devakaṇṭakaḥ| taṃ pīḍayitvā bāhubhyāṃ na prabhurlaṅghane'bhavat || 59.113 ||

Then that thorn to the gods, having crushed Lakshmana -- destroyer of the danavas' pride -- with his arms, was still unable to lift him.

Shloka 114 (yuddha.59.114)

tataḥ kruddho vāyusuto rāvaṇaṃ samabhidravat| ājaghānorasi kruddho vajrakalpena muṣṭinā || 59.114 ||

Then the enraged son of the Wind rushed at Ravana, and, furious, struck him on the chest with a fist like a thunderbolt.

Shloka 115 (yuddha.59.115)

tena muṣṭiprahāreṇa rāvaṇo rākṣaseśvaraḥ| jānubhyāmagamad bhūmau cacāla ca papāta ca || 59.115 ||

By that blow of the fist, Ravana, lord of the rakshasas, sank to his knees upon the ground, reeled, and fell.

Shloka 116 (yuddha.59.116)

āsyaiśca netraiḥ śravaṇaiḥ papāta rudhiraṃ bahu| vighūrṇamāno niśceṣṭo rathopastha upāviśat || 59.116 ||

From his mouth, eyes and ears much blood poured out; reeling, motionless, he sank down upon his chariot's seat.

Shloka 117 (yuddha.59.117)

visaṃjño mūrcchitaścāsīnna ca sthānaṃ samālabhat| visaṃjñaṃ rāvaṇaṃ dṛṣṭvā samare bhīmavikramam || 59.117 ||

He was senseless and swooning, unable even to hold his place.

Shloka 118 (yuddha.59.118)

ṛṣayo vānarāścaiva nedurdevāśca sāsurāḥ| hanūmānatha tejasvī lakṣmaṇaṃ rāvaṇārditam || 59.118 ||

Seeing Ravana, of terrible prowess, senseless in that battle, the sages, monkeys, and gods with the asuras cried out.

Shloka 119 (yuddha.59.119)

ānayad rāghavābhyāśaṃ bāhubhyāṃ parigṛhya tam| vāyusūnoḥ suhṛttvena bhaktyā paramayā ca saḥ| śatrūṇāmapyakampyo'pi laghutvamagamat kapeḥ || 59.119 ||

Then the splendorous Hanuman, taking up in his arms the Ravana-stricken Lakshmana, carried him near to Raghava. Out of friendship for the son of the Wind, and through the highest devotion, even he -- unshakeable to enemies -- yielded to the monkey's gentle handling.

Shloka 120 (yuddha.59.120)

taṃ samutsṛjya sā śaktiḥ saumitriṃ yudhi nirjitam| rāvaṇasya rathe tasmin sthānaṃ punarupāgamat || 59.120 ||

That spear, releasing Lakshmana, though he was overcome in battle, returned once more to its place upon Ravana's chariot.

Shloka 121 (yuddha.59.121)

rāvaṇo'pi mahātejāḥ prāpya saṃjñāṃ mahāhave| ādade niśitān bāṇāñjagrāha ca mahaddhanuḥ || 59.121 ||

Ravana too, the mighty-splendored, having regained his senses in that great battle, took up sharp arrows and grasped his great bow.

Shloka 122 (yuddha.59.122)

āśvastaśca viśalyaśca lakṣmaṇaḥ śatrusūdanaḥ| viṣṇorbhāgamamīmāṃsyamātmānaṃ pratyanusmaran || 59.122 ||

Lakshmana, slayer of foes, now recovered and freed of the spear's wound, recalling within himself his identity as the unfathomable portion of Vishnu --

Shloka 123 (yuddha.59.123)

nipātitamahāvīrāṃ vānarāṇāṃ mahācamūm| rāghavastu raṇe dṛṣṭvā rāvaṇaṃ samabhidravat || 59.123 ||

-- seeing the great monkey army with its mighty heroes struck down in that battle, Raghava charged at Ravana.

Shloka 124 (yuddha.59.124)

athainamanusaṃkramya hanūmān vākyamabravīt| mama pṛṣṭhaṃ samāruhya rākṣasaṃ śāstumarhasi || 59.124 ||

Then Hanuman, approaching him, spoke: "Mounting upon my back, you should chastise this rakshasa --

Shloka 125 (yuddha.59.125)

viṣṇuryathā garutmantamāruhyāmaravairiṇam| tacchrutvā rāghavo vākyaṃ vāyuputreṇa bhāṣitam || 59.125 ||

-- as Vishnu, mounted upon Garuda, chastises the enemies of the gods." Hearing these words spoken by the son of the Wind, Raghava --

Shloka 126 (yuddha.59.126)

athāruroha sahasā hanūmantaṃ mahākapim| rathasthaṃ rāvaṇaṃ saṃkhye dadarśa manujādhipaḥ || 59.126 ||

-- at once mounted upon the great monkey Hanuman; and that lord of men beheld Ravana, stationed on his chariot, in that battle.

Shloka 127 (yuddha.59.127)

tamālokya mahātejāḥ pradudrāva sa rāvaṇam| vairocanamiva kruddho viṣṇurabhyudyatāyudhaḥ || 59.127 ||

Beholding him, that mighty-splendored one charged at Ravana, weapon raised, like an enraged Vishnu charging at Vairochana.

Shloka 128 (yuddha.59.128)

jyāśabdamakarot tīvraṃ vajraniṣpeṣaniṣṭhuram| girā gambhīrayā rāmo rākṣasendramuvāca ha || 59.128 ||

He made his bowstring resound fiercely, harsh as the grinding of a thunderbolt, and in a deep voice Rama addressed the lord of the rakshasas:

Shloka 129 (yuddha.59.129)

tiṣṭha tiṣṭha mama tvaṃ hi kṛtvā vipriyamīdṛśam| kva nu rākṣasaśārdūla gatvā mokṣamavāpsyasi || 59.129 ||

"Stand, stand! Having done me such an injury, where, O tiger among rakshasas, can you go and yet win release?"

Shloka 130 (yuddha.59.130)

yadīndravaivasvatabhāskarān vā svayaṃbhuvaiśvānaraśaṃkarān vā| gamiṣyasi tvaṃ daśadhā diśo vā tathāpi me nādya gato vimokṣyase || 59.130 ||

"Though you flee to Indra, to Yama, to the Sun, to Brahma, to Fire, or to Shankara, or in any of the ten directions, still, having gone, you shall not today escape from me."

Shloka 131 (yuddha.59.131)

yaścaiṣa śaktyā nihatastvayādya gacchan viṣādaṃ sahasābhyupetya| sa eṣa rakṣogaṇarāja mṛtyuḥ saputrapautrasya tavādya yuddhe || 59.131 ||

"He whom you struck today with your spear, plunging suddenly into anguish -- that very one, O king of the rakshasa hosts, shall today in battle be death itself to you, your sons, and your grandsons."

Shloka 132 (yuddha.59.132)

etena cātyadbhutadarśanāni śarairjanasthānakṛtālayāni| caturdaśānyāttavarāyudhāni rakṣaḥsahasrāṇi niṣūditāni || 59.132 ||

"By him too, fourteen thousand rakshasas of wondrous and terrible aspect, dwelling in Janasthana and armed with choicest weapons, were slain with his arrows."

Shloka 133 (yuddha.59.133)

rāghavasya vacaḥ śrutvā rākṣasendro mahābalaḥ| vāyuputraṃ mahāvegaṃ vahantaṃ rāghavaṃ raṇe || 59.133 ||

Hearing Raghava's words, the mighty rakshasa lord, seized with great fury --

Shloka 134 (yuddha.59.134)

roṣeṇa mahatā''viṣṭaḥ pūrvavairamanusmaran| ājaghāna śarairdīptaiḥ kālānalaśikhopamaiḥ || 59.134 ||

-- and recalling his old enmity, struck with blazing arrows, like the flames of doomsday's fire, the great-speeding son of the Wind who bore Raghava in that battle.

Shloka 135 (yuddha.59.135)

rākṣasenāhave tasya tāḍitasyāpi sāyakaiḥ| svabhāvatejoyuktasya bhūyastejo'bhyavardhata || 59.135 ||

Yet even as he was struck by the rakshasa's arrows in that combat, Hanuman -- possessed of inborn splendor -- had his splendor only increase the more.

Shloka 136 (yuddha.59.136)

tato rāmo mahātejā rāvaṇena kṛtavraṇam| dṛṣṭvā plavagaśārdūlaṃ krodhasya vaśameyivān || 59.136 ||

Then the mighty-splendored Rama, seeing that tiger among monkeys wounded by Ravana, fell under the sway of anger.

Shloka 137 (yuddha.59.137)

tasyābhisaṃkramya rathaṃ sacakraṃ sāśvadhvajacchatramahāpatākam| sasārathiṃ sāśaniśūlakhaḍgaṃ rāmaḥ praciccheda śitaiḥ śarāgraiḥ || 59.137 ||

Approaching his chariot, Rama, with the sharp points of his arrows, cut it to pieces -- wheels, horses, banner, parasol, and great flag, together with its charioteer, and its thunderbolt-weapon, trident and sword.

Shloka 138 (yuddha.59.138)

athendraśatruṃ tarasā jaghāna bāṇena vajrāśanisaṃnibhena| bhujāntare vyūḍhasujātarūpe vajreṇa meruṃ bhagavānivendraḥ || 59.138 ||

Then he swiftly struck that enemy of Indra with an arrow like the thunderbolt itself, upon his broad and well-formed chest, as the lord Indra strikes Meru with his thunderbolt.

Shloka 139 (yuddha.59.139)

yo vajrapātāśanisaṃnipātā- nna cukṣubhe nāpi cacāla rājā| sa rāmabāṇābhihato bhṛśārta- ścacāla cāpaṃ ca mumoca vīraḥ || 59.139 ||

That king, who had never been shaken or moved even by the fall of thunderbolts, being struck by Rama's arrow, was greatly pained; that hero reeled and let his bow fall.

Shloka 140 (yuddha.59.140)

taṃ vihvalantaṃ prasamīkṣya rāmaḥ samādade dīptamathārdhacandram| tenārkavarṇaṃ sahasā kirīṭaṃ ciccheda rakṣodhipatermahātmā || 59.140 ||

Seeing him reeling, Rama took up a blazing crescent-headed arrow, and with it the great-souled one at once cut off the sun-bright crown of the rakshasa lord.

Shloka 141 (yuddha.59.141)

taṃ nirviṣāśīviṣasaṃnikāśaṃ śāntārciṣaṃ sūryamivāprakāśam| gataśriyaṃ kṛttakirīṭakūṭa- muvāca rāmo yudhi rākṣasendram || 59.141 ||

To him -- now like a venomless serpent, like a sun with its rays extinguished, its splendor lightless, his glory gone, his crown's peak cut away -- Rama spoke thus in that battle, to the lord of the rakshasas.

Shloka 142 (yuddha.59.142)

kṛtaṃ tvayā karma mahat subhīmaṃ hatapravīraśca kṛtastvayāham| tasmāt pariśrānta iti vyavasya na tvāṃ śarairmṛtyuvaśaṃ nayāmi || 59.142 ||

"You have performed a mighty and terrible deed, and you have deprived me of my finest heroes; yet, judging that you are now exhausted, I do not send you with my arrows to the sway of death."

Shloka 143 (yuddha.59.143)

prayāhi jānāmi raṇārditastvaṃ praviśya rātriṃcararāja laṅkām| āśvasya niryāhi rathī ca dhanvī tadā balaṃ prekṣyasi me rathasthaḥ || 59.143 ||

"Go now; I know you are worn out by battle. Enter Lanka, O king of the night-rangers; then, having recovered, come forth again, chariot-borne and bow in hand, and then, seated on your chariot, you shall witness my strength."

Shloka 144 (yuddha.59.144)

sa evamukto hatadarpaharṣo nikṛttacāpaḥ sa hatāśvasūtaḥ| śarārdito bhagnamahākirīṭo viveśa laṅkāṃ sahasā sma rājā || 59.144 ||

Thus addressed, his pride and joy destroyed, his bow cut down, his horses and charioteer slain, pained by arrows, his great crown shattered, that king entered Lanka at once.

Shloka 145 (yuddha.59.145)

tasmin praviṣṭe rajanīcarendre mahābale dānavadevaśatrau| harīn viśalyān saha lakṣmaṇena cakāra rāmaḥ paramāhavāgre || 59.145 ||

When that mighty enemy of the danavas and gods, lord of the night-rangers, had entered the city, Rama, there at the forefront of that great battle, healed the monkeys of their arrow-wounds, together with Lakshmana.

Shloka 146 (yuddha.59.146)

tasmin prabhagne tridaśendraśatrau surāsurā bhūtagaṇā diśaśca| sasāgarāḥ sarṣimahoragāśca tathaiva bhūmyambucarāḥ prahṛṣṭāḥ || 59.146 ||

When that enemy of the king of the gods was thus defeated, the gods and asuras, the hosts of spirits, the very quarters of the sky, the oceans, the sages, the great serpents, and likewise all creatures that move on earth or in water, rejoiced.
