Shloka 1 (yuddha.60.1)

sa praviśya purīṃ laṅkāṃ rāmabāṇabhayārditaḥ| bhagnadarpastadā rājā babhūva vyathitendriyaḥ || 60.1 ||

Entering the city of Lanka, tormented by fear of Rama's arrows, that king, his pride broken, became distressed in all his senses.

Shloka 2 (yuddha.60.2)

mātaṃga iva siṃhena garuḍeneva pannagaḥ| abhibhūto'bhavad rājā rāghaveṇa mahātmanā || 60.2 ||

Like an elephant overcome by a lion, like a serpent overcome by Garuda, that king was overcome by the great-souled Raghava.

Shloka 3 (yuddha.60.3)

brahmadaṇḍapratīkānāṃ vidyuccalitavarcasām| smaran rāghavabāṇānāṃ vivyathe rākṣaseśvaraḥ || 60.3 ||

Recalling Raghava's arrows, resembling the very rod of Brahma, blazing with the brilliance of lightning, the lord of the rakshasas was tormented.

Shloka 4 (yuddha.60.4)

sa kāñcanamayaṃ divyamāśritya paramāsanam| viprekṣamāṇo rakṣāṃsi rāvaṇo vākyamabravīt || 60.4 ||

Seated upon his splendid golden throne, gazing upon the assembled rakshasas, Ravana spoke these words.

Shloka 5 (yuddha.60.5)

sarvaṃ tat khalu me moghaṃ yat taptaṃ paramaṃ tapaḥ| yat samāno mahendreṇa mānuṣeṇa vinirjitaḥ || 60.5 ||

"All that supreme austerity I once performed has indeed proved vain, since I, equal to great Indra, have been vanquished by a mere human."

Shloka 6 (yuddha.60.6)

idaṃ tad brahmaṇo ghoraṃ vākyaṃ māmabhyupasthitam| mānuṣebhyo vijānīhi bhayaṃ tvamiti tattathā || 60.6 ||

"This is that terrible word of Brahma now come upon me -- 'know your danger to come from men' -- and so indeed it has proved."

Shloka 7 (yuddha.60.7)

devadānavagandharvairyakṣarākṣasapannagaiḥ| avadhyatvaṃ mayā proktaṃ mānuṣebhyo na yācitam || 60.7 ||

"I asked for invulnerability against gods, danavas, gandharvas, yakshas, rakshasas and serpents; against men I did not ask."

Shloka 8 (yuddha.60.8)

tamimaṃ mānuṣaṃ manye rāmaṃ daśarathātmajam| ikṣvākukulajātena anaraṇyena yat purā || 60.8 ||

"This human, I believe, is that very Rama, son of Dasharatha, of whom Anaranya, born of the Ikshvaku line, once foretold --"

Shloka 9 (yuddha.60.9)

utpatsyati hi madvaṃśapuruṣo rākṣasādhama| yastvāṃ saputraṃ sāmātyaṃ sabalaṃ sāśvasārathim || 60.9 ||

"-- 'A man shall be born in my line, O basest of rakshasas, who shall slay you in battle together with your sons, your ministers, your army, your horses and your charioteers --"

Shloka 10 (yuddha.60.10)

nihaniṣyati saṃgrāme tvāṃ kulādhama durmate| śapto'haṃ vedavatyā ca yathā sā dharṣitā purā || 60.10 ||

-- O vile and evil-minded one of a degraded line.' And I was also cursed by Vedavati, in the manner she was once violated.

Shloka 11 (yuddha.60.11)

seyaṃ sītā mahābhāgā jātā janakanandinī| umā nandīśvaraścāpi rambhā varuṇakanyakā || 60.11 ||

That very Vedavati has now been born as Sita, daughter of Janaka. And as was foretold by Uma, and by Nandishvara, and by Rambha, daughter of Varuna --

Shloka 12 (yuddha.60.12)

yathoktāstanmayā prāptaṃ na mithyā ṛṣibhāṣitam| etadeva samāgamya yatnaṃ kartumihārhatha || 60.12 ||

-- so it has come to pass for me -- what the sages spoke was not false. Coming together now, you must make every effort here.

Shloka 13 (yuddha.60.13)

rākṣasāścāpi tiṣṭhantu caryāgopuramūrdhasu| sa cāpratimagāmbhīryo devadānavadarpahā || 60.13 ||

"Let the rakshasas take their stand at the watch-posts and upon the tower-tops." And that one of matchless gravity, crusher of the pride of gods and danavas --

Shloka 14 (yuddha.60.14)

brahmaśāpābhibhūtastu kumbhakarṇo vibodhyatām| samare jitamātmānaṃ prahastaṃ ca niṣūditam || 60.14 ||

-- said: "Let Kumbhakarna, overcome by Brahma's curse, be awakened." Having learned that he himself had been defeated in battle and that Prahasta had been slain --

Shloka 15 (yuddha.60.15)

jñātvā rakṣobalaṃ bhīmamādideśa mahābalaḥ| dvāreṣu yatnaḥ kriyatāṃ prākāraścādhiruhyatām || 60.15 ||

-- that mighty one gave command to the terrible rakshasa host: "Let effort be made at the gates, and let the ramparts be manned."

Shloka 16 (yuddha.60.16)

nidrāvaśasamāviṣṭaḥ kumbhakarṇo vibodhyatām| sukhaṃ svapiti niścintaḥ kāmopahatacetanaḥ || 60.16 ||

"Let Kumbhakarna, overcome by the sway of sleep, be awakened -- he sleeps happily, free of care, his mind overpowered by desire."

Shloka 17 (yuddha.60.17)

nava sapta daśāṣṭau ca māsān svapiti rākṣasaḥ| mantraṃ kṛtvā prasupto'yamitastu navame'hani || 60.17 ||

"That rakshasa sleeps for nine, or seven, or ten, or eight months at a stretch; having performed his rite, he has now slept, from this day, into the ninth day."

Shloka 18 (yuddha.60.18)

taṃ tu bodhayata kṣipraṃ kumbhakarṇaṃ mahābalam| sa hi saṃkhye mahābāhuḥ kakudaṃ sarvarakṣasām| vānarān rājaputrau ca kṣiprameva haniṣyati || 60.18 ||

"Awaken that mighty Kumbhakarna quickly; he, mighty-armed, is the very crown of all the rakshasas in battle, and shall swiftly slay the monkeys and the two princes."

Shloka 19 (yuddha.60.19)

eṣa ketuḥ paraṃ saṃkhye mukhyo vai sarvarakṣasām| kumbhakarṇaḥ sadā śete mūḍho grāmyasukhe rataḥ || 60.19 ||

"He is the foremost banner in battle among all rakshasas; Kumbhakarna, alas, always sleeps, foolishly given over to sensual pleasure."

Shloka 20 (yuddha.60.20)

rāmeṇābhinirastasya saṃgrāme'smin sudāruṇe| bhaviṣyati na me śokaḥ kumbhakarṇe vibodhite || 60.20 ||

"Once Kumbhakarna is awakened, I shall no longer grieve, though driven back by Rama in this terrible war."

Shloka 21 (yuddha.60.21)

kiṃ kariṣyāmyahaṃ tena śakratulyabalena hi| īdṛśe vyasane ghore yo na sāhyāya kalpate || 60.21 ||

"Of what use to me is that one, equal in strength to Indra himself, if in such a terrible crisis he cannot be summoned to my aid?"

Shloka 22 (yuddha.60.22)

te tu tad vacanaṃ śrutvā rākṣasendrasya rākṣasāḥ| jagmuḥ paramasambhrāntāḥ kumbhakarṇaniveśanam || 60.22 ||

Hearing these words of the rakshasa lord, those rakshasas, in utmost haste, went to Kumbhakarna's dwelling.

Shloka 23 (yuddha.60.23)

te rāvaṇasamādiṣṭā māṃsaśoṇitabhojanāḥ| gandhaṃ mālyaṃ mahadbhakṣyamādāya sahasā yayuḥ || 60.23 ||

Commanded by Ravana, those flesh-and-blood-eating rakshasas went at once, bearing fragrant perfumes, garlands, and abundant food.

Shloka 24 (yuddha.60.24)

tāṃ praviśya mahādvārāṃ sarvato yojanāyatām| kumbhakarṇaguhāṃ ramyāṃ puṣpagandhapravāhinīm || 60.24 ||

Entering that great-gated cave of Kumbhakarna, a league wide on every side, delightful, wafting with the fragrance of flowers --

Shloka 25 (yuddha.60.25)

kumbhakarṇasya niḥśvāsādavadhūtā mahābalāḥ| pratiṣṭhamānāḥ kṛcchreṇa yatnāt praviviśurguhām || 60.25 ||

-- those mighty rakshasas, buffeted by Kumbhakarna's very breath, could barely stand, and with effort and difficulty made their way into the cave.

Shloka 26 (yuddha.60.26)

tāṃ praviśya guhāṃ ramyāṃ ratnakāñcanakuṭṭimām| dadṛśurnairṛtavyāghrāḥ śayānaṃ bhīmavikramam || 60.26 ||

Entering that delightful cave, its floor paved with gems and gold, those tigers among rakshasas beheld him lying there, of terrible prowess.

Shloka 27 (yuddha.60.27)

te tu taṃ vikṛtaṃ suptaṃ vikīrṇamiva parvatam| kumbhakarṇaṃ mahānidraṃ sametāḥ pratyabodhayan || 60.27 ||

Gathering together, they set about waking that misshapen, sleeping, deeply-slumbering Kumbhakarna, sprawled like a scattered mountain.

Shloka 28 (yuddha.60.28)

ūrdhvalomāñcitatanuṃ śvasantamiva pannagam| bhrāmayantaṃ viniḥśvāsaiḥ śayānaṃ bhīmavikramam || 60.28 ||

The hair on his body stood on end; he hissed like a serpent; his limbs were stirred by his own great breaths, as he lay there of terrible prowess.

Shloka 29 (yuddha.60.29)

bhīmanāsāpuṭaṃ taṃ tu pātālavipulānanam| śayane nyastasarvāṅgaṃ medorudhiragandhinam || 60.29 ||

They beheld him -- his nostrils terrible, his mouth vast as the netherworld, all his limbs stretched out upon his bed, reeking of fat and blood --

Shloka 30 (yuddha.60.30)

kāñcanāṅgadanaddhāṅgaṃ kirīṭenārkavarcasam| dadṛśurnairṛtavyāghraṃ kumbhakarṇamariṃdamam || 60.30 ||

-- his body bound with golden armlets, his crown bright as the sun -- that tiger among rakshasas, subduer of foes, Kumbhakarna.

Shloka 31 (yuddha.60.31)

tataścakrurmahātmānaḥ kumbhakarṇasya cāgrataḥ| bhūtānāṃ merusaṃkāśaṃ rāśiṃ paramatarpaṇam || 60.31 ||

Then those great-souled ones set before Kumbhakarna a mountain-like heap of creatures, most gratifying.

Shloka 32 (yuddha.60.32)

mṛgāṇāṃ mahiṣāṇāṃ ca varāhāṇāṃ ca saṃcayān| cakrurnairṛtaśārdūlā rāśimannasya cādbhutam || 60.32 ||

Those tigers among rakshasas, piling up deer, buffaloes and boars, made a wondrous mass of food.

Shloka 33 (yuddha.60.33)

tataḥ śoṇitakumbhāṃśca māṃsāni vividhāni ca| purastāt kumbhakarṇasya cakrustridaśaśatravaḥ || 60.33 ||

Then those enemies of the gods set before Kumbhakarna vessels of blood and meats of every kind.

Shloka 34 (yuddha.60.34)

lilipuśca parārghyena candanena paraṃtapam| divyairāśvāsayāmāsurmālyairgandhaiśca gandhibhiḥ || 60.34 ||

They smeared that scorcher of foes with costly sandal-paste, and revived him with divine garlands and fragrant scents.

Shloka 35 (yuddha.60.35)

dhūpagandhāṃśca sasṛjustuṣṭuvuśca paraṃtapam| jaladā iva cāneduryātudhānāstatastataḥ || 60.35 ||

They spread clouds of incense, sang his praises, and the demons roared on every side like storm-clouds.

Shloka 36 (yuddha.60.36)

śaṅkhāṃśca pūrayāmāsuḥ śaśāṅkasadṛśaprabhān| tumulaṃ yugapaccāpi vineduścāpyamarṣitāḥ || 60.36 ||

They blew conches bright as the moon, and, impatient, all together raised a tumultuous din.

Shloka 37 (yuddha.60.37)

nedurāsphoṭayāmāsuścikṣipuste niśācarāḥ| kumbhakarṇavibodhārthaṃ cakruste vipulaṃ svaram || 60.37 ||

The night-rangers shouted, clapped, and hurled things about, making a vast noise in order to rouse Kumbhakarna.

Shloka 38 (yuddha.60.38)

saśaṅkhabherīpaṇavapraṇādaṃ sāsphoṭitakṣvelitasiṃhanādam| diśo dravantastridivaṃ kirantaḥ śrutvā vihaṃgāḥ sahasā nipetuḥ yadā bhṛśaṃ tairninadairmahātmā na kumbhakarṇo bubudhe prasuptaḥ| tato bhuśuṇḍīrmusalāni sarve rakṣogaṇāste jagṛhurgadāśca || 60.38 ||

At the sound of conches, war-drums and cymbals mingled with clapping, shouts and lion-roars, birds, hearing it, fled the sky in every direction and fell suddenly to earth. Yet even at that tremendous din, the great-souled, sleeping Kumbhakarna did not wake. Then all the rakshasa hosts seized iron clubs, maces, and cudgels.

Shloka 39 (yuddha.60.39)

taṃ śailaśṛṅgairmusalairgadābhi- rvakṣaḥsthale muda‍garamuṣṭibhiśca| sukhaprasuptaṃ bhuvi kumbhakarṇaṃ rakṣāṃsyudagrāṇi tadā nijaghnuḥ || 60.39 ||

Then those fierce demons struck the happily-sleeping Kumbhakarna, as he lay upon the ground, on his chest with mountain-peaks, maces, clubs, and blows of hammers and fists.

Shloka 40 (yuddha.60.40)

tasya niḥśvāsavātena kumbhakarṇasya rakṣasaḥ| rākṣasāḥ kumbhakarṇasya sthātuṃ śekurna cāgrataḥ || 60.40 ||

By the very wind of that demon Kumbhakarna's breath, the rakshasas could not even manage to stand before him.

Shloka 41 (yuddha.60.41)

tataḥ parihitā gāḍhaṃ rākṣasā bhīmavikramāḥ| mṛdaṅgapaṇavān bherīḥ śaṅkhakumbhagaṇāṃstathā || 60.41 ||

Then those rakshasas of terrible prowess, firmly girded, with mridangas, panavas, war-drums, conches and kettle-drums --

Shloka 42 (yuddha.60.42)

daśa rākṣasasāhasraṃ yugapatparyavārayat| nīlāñjanacayākāraṃ te tu taṃ pratyabodhayan || 60.42 ||

-- ten thousand of them at once surrounded him, shaped like a heap of dark collyrium, and strove to wake him.

Shloka 43 (yuddha.60.43)

abhighnanto nadantaśca na ca sambubudhe tadā| yadā cainaṃ na śekuste pratibodhayituṃ tadā || 60.43 ||

Striking and roaring, still he did not wake. When they found they still could not rouse him --

Shloka 44 (yuddha.60.44)

tato gurutaraṃ yatnaṃ dāruṇaṃ samupākraman| aśvānuṣṭrān kharān nāgāñjaghnurdaṇḍakaśāṅkuśaiḥ || 60.44 ||

-- then they undertook an even more strenuous and drastic effort: they goaded horses, camels, mules and elephants with rods, whips and hooks.

Shloka 45 (yuddha.60.45)

bherīśaṅkhamṛdaṅgāṃśca sarvaprāṇairavādayan| nijaghnuścāsya gātrāṇi mahākāṣṭhakaṭaṃkaraiḥ || 60.45 ||

They beat war-drums, conches and mridangas with all their strength; and they struck his limbs with great wooden clubs.

Shloka 46 (yuddha.60.46)

muda‍garairmusalaiścāpi sarvaprāṇasamudyataiḥ| tena nādena mahatā laṅkā sarvā prapūritā| saparvatavanā sarvā so'pi naiva prabudhyate || 60.46 ||

They struck with hammers and maces, wielded with all their might. By that mighty uproar all of Lanka, with all its mountains and forests, was filled -- yet even so he did not awaken.

Shloka 47 (yuddha.60.47)

tato bherīsahasraṃ tu yugapat samahanyata| mṛṣṭakāñcanakoṇānāmasaktānāṃ samantataḥ || 60.47 ||

Then a thousand war-drums were struck at once on every side, with polished golden drumsticks unrestrained.

Shloka 48 (yuddha.60.48)

evamapyatinidrastu yadā naiva prabudhyate| śāpasya vaśamāpannastataḥ kruddhā niśācarāḥ || 60.48 ||

Yet still, so excessive was his sleep, he did not wake, held fast in the sway of that curse -- at which the night-rangers grew furious.

Shloka 49 (yuddha.60.49)

tataḥ kopasamāviṣṭāḥ sarve bhīmaparākramāḥ| tad rakṣo bodhayiṣyantaścakruranye parākramam || 60.49 ||

Then, seized with fury, all of them, terrible in prowess, made further exertions to rouse that demon.

Shloka 50 (yuddha.60.50)

anye bherīḥ samājaghnuranye cakrurmahāsvanam| keśānanye pralulupuḥ karṇānanye daśanti ca || 60.50 ||

Some pounded drums, some raised a great clamor, some pulled out his hair, some bit his ears.

Shloka 51 (yuddha.60.51)
