Ravana's Appeal to Kumbhakarna

Shloka 1 (yuddha.62.1)

स तु राक्षसशार्दूलो निद्रामदसमाकुलः। राजमार्गं श्रिया जुष्टं ययौ विपुलविक्रमः ॥ 62.1 ॥

sa tu rākṣasaśārdūlo nidrāmadasamākulaḥ| rājamārgaṃ śriyā juṣṭaṃ yayau vipulavikramaḥ || 62.1 ||

That tiger among rakshasas, still dazed with the stupor of sleep, the mighty one of vast prowess, went forth along the royal highway, resplendent with beauty.

Shloka 2 (yuddha.62.2)

राक्षसानां सहस्रैश्च वृतः परमदुर्जयः। गृहेभ्यः पुष्पवर्षेण कीर्यमाणस्तदा ययौ ॥ 62.2 ॥

rākṣasānāṃ sahasraiśca vṛtaḥ paramadurjayaḥ| gṛhebhyaḥ puṣpavarṣeṇa kīryamāṇastadā yayau || 62.2 ||

Surrounded by thousands of rakshasas, that most unconquerable one advanced then, showered with flowers falling from the houses.

Shloka 3 (yuddha.62.3)

स हेमजालविततं भानुभास्वरदर्शनम्। ददर्श विपुलं रम्यं राक्षसेन्द्रनिवेशनम् ॥ 62.3 ॥

sa hemajālavitataṃ bhānubhāsvaradarśanam| dadarśa vipulaṃ ramyaṃ rākṣasendraniveśanam || 62.3 ||

He beheld the vast and lovely dwelling of the lord of rakshasas, spread over with nets of gold, radiant to the eye as the sun.

Shloka 4 (yuddha.62.4)

स तत्तदा सूर्य इवाभ्रजालं। प्रविश्य रक्षोधिपतेर्निवेशनम्। ददर्श दूरेऽग्रजमासनस्थं। स्वयंभुवं शक्र इवासनस्थम् ॥ 62.4 ॥

sa tattadā sūrya ivābhrajālaṃ| praviśya rakṣodhipaterniveśanam| dadarśa dūre'grajamāsanasthaṃ| svayaṃbhuvaṃ śakra ivāsanastham || 62.4 ||

Entering that dwelling of the rakshasa-lord as the sun enters a bank of clouds, he saw from afar his elder brother seated upon his throne, as if Brahma the Self-existent sat enthroned like Indra.

Shloka 5 (yuddha.62.5)

भ्रातुः स भवनं गच्छन् रक्षोगणसमन्वितः। कुम्भकर्णः पदन्यासैरकम्पयत मेदिनीम् ॥ 62.5 ॥

bhrātuḥ sa bhavanaṃ gacchan rakṣogaṇasamanvitaḥ| kumbhakarṇaḥ padanyāsairakampayata medinīm || 62.5 ||

As Kumbhakarna went toward his brother's palace, accompanied by his host of rakshasas, the earth shook beneath the tread of his feet.

Shloka 6 (yuddha.62.6)

सोऽभिगम्य गृहं भ्रातुः कक्ष्यामभिविगाह्य च। ददर्शोद्विग्नमासीनं विमाने पुष्पके गुरुम् ॥ 62.6 ॥

so'bhigamya gṛhaṃ bhrātuḥ kakṣyāmabhivigāhya ca| dadarśodvignamāsīnaṃ vimāne puṣpake gurum || 62.6 ||

Approaching his brother's house and passing through its inner courts, he saw his elder brother seated, troubled, upon the Pushpaka chariot.

Shloka 7 (yuddha.62.7)

अथ दृष्ट्वा दशग्रीवः कुम्भकर्णमुपस्थितम्। तूर्णमुत्थाय संहृष्टः संनिकर्षमुपानयत् ॥ 62.7 ॥

atha dṛṣṭvā daśagrīvaḥ kumbhakarṇamupasthitam| tūrṇamutthāya saṃhṛṣṭaḥ saṃnikarṣamupānayat || 62.7 ||

Then, seeing Kumbhakarna arrived before him, the ten-necked Ravana rose swiftly, overjoyed, and drew him close.

Shloka 8 (yuddha.62.8)

अथासीनस्य पर्यङ्के कुम्भकर्णो महाबलः। भ्रातुर्ववन्दे चरणौ किं कृत्यमिति चाब्रवीत् ॥ 62.8 ॥

athāsīnasya paryaṅke kumbhakarṇo mahābalaḥ| bhrāturvavande caraṇau kiṃ kṛtyamiti cābravīt || 62.8 ||

Then mighty Kumbhakarna bowed at the feet of his brother, seated upon the couch, and asked, 'What is to be done?'

Shloka 9 (yuddha.62.9)

उत्पत्य चैनं मुदितो रावणः परिषस्वजे। स भ्रात्रा सम्परिष्वक्तो यथावच्चाभिनन्दितः ॥ 62.9 ॥

utpatya cainaṃ mudito rāvaṇaḥ pariṣasvaje| sa bhrātrā sampariṣvakto yathāvaccābhinanditaḥ || 62.9 ||

Rising up, joyful, Ravana embraced him; and Kumbhakarna, embraced by his brother, was duly welcomed.

Shloka 10 (yuddha.62.10)

कुम्भकर्णः शुभं दिव्यं प्रतिपेदे वरासनम्। स तदासनमाश्रित्य कुम्भकर्णो महाबलः ॥ 62.10 ॥

kumbhakarṇaḥ śubhaṃ divyaṃ pratipede varāsanam| sa tadāsanamāśritya kumbhakarṇo mahābalaḥ || 62.10 ||

Kumbhakarna then took his place upon a splendid, celestial seat of honour; and having seated himself there, mighty Kumbhakarna --

Shloka 11 (yuddha.62.11)

संरक्तनयनः क्रोधाद् रावणं वाक्यमब्रवीत्। किमर्थमहमादृत्य त्वया राजन् प्रबोधितः ॥ 62.11 ॥

saṃraktanayanaḥ krodhād rāvaṇaṃ vākyamabravīt| kimarthamahamādṛtya tvayā rājan prabodhitaḥ || 62.11 ||

-- his eyes red with irritation, spoke these words to Ravana: 'For what reason, O king, have you had me roused with such urgency?'

Shloka 12 (yuddha.62.12)

शंस कस्माद् भयं तेऽत्र को वा प्रेतो भविष्यति। भ्रातरं रावणः क्रुद्धं कुम्भकर्णमवस्थितम् ॥ 62.12 ॥

śaṃsa kasmād bhayaṃ te'tra ko vā preto bhaviṣyati| bhrātaraṃ rāvaṇaḥ kruddhaṃ kumbhakarṇamavasthitam || 62.12 ||

'Tell me, from what has this fear of yours arisen? Who is it that must die?' -- Then to his brother Kumbhakarna, who stood there impatient, Ravana --

Shloka 13 (yuddha.62.13)

रोषेण परिवृत्ताभ्यां नेत्राभ्यां वाक्यमब्रवीत्। अद्य ते सुमहान् कालः शयानस्य महाबल ॥ 62.13 ॥

roṣeṇa parivṛttābhyāṃ netrābhyāṃ vākyamabravīt| adya te sumahān kālaḥ śayānasya mahābala || 62.13 ||

-- his own eyes rolling with anguish, spoke these words: 'A very long time indeed you have lain sleeping, O mighty one.

Shloka 14 (yuddha.62.14)

सुषुप्तस्त्वं न जानीषे मम रामकृतं भयम्। एष दाशरथिः श्रीमान् सुग्रीवसहितो बली ॥ 62.14 ॥

suṣuptastvaṃ na jānīṣe mama rāmakṛtaṃ bhayam| eṣa dāśarathiḥ śrīmān sugrīvasahito balī || 62.14 ||

Deep in sleep, you do not know the fear that Rama has caused me. This glorious and mighty son of Dasharatha, together with Sugriva --

Shloka 15 (yuddha.62.15)

समुद्रं लङ्घयित्वा तु मूलं नः परिकृन्तति। हन्त पश्यस्व लङ्कायां वनान्युपवनानि च ॥ 62.15 ॥

samudraṃ laṅghayitvā tu mūlaṃ naḥ parikṛntati| hanta paśyasva laṅkāyāṃ vanānyupavanāni ca || 62.15 ||

-- having crossed the ocean, is now cutting away at our very root. Look, see for yourself, at the groves and gardens of Lanka --

Shloka 16 (yuddha.62.16)

सेतुना सुखमागत्य वानरैकार्णवं कृतम्। ये राक्षसा मुख्यतमा हतास्ते वानरैर्युधि ॥ 62.16 ॥

setunā sukhamāgatya vānaraikārṇavaṃ kṛtam| ye rākṣasā mukhyatamā hatāste vānarairyudhi || 62.16 ||

-- by a bridge the monkeys crossed with ease and turned the ocean itself into their causeway; the foremost of our rakshasas have already been slain in battle by these monkeys.

Shloka 17 (yuddha.62.17)

वानराणां क्षयं युद्धे न पश्यामि कथंचन। न चापि वानरा युद्धे जितपूर्वाः कदाचन ॥ 62.17 ॥

vānarāṇāṃ kṣayaṃ yuddhe na paśyāmi kathaṃcana| na cāpi vānarā yuddhe jitapūrvāḥ kadācana || 62.17 ||

I see no way at all to bring about the destruction of these monkeys in battle; nor have the monkeys ever before been defeated in war.

Shloka 18 (yuddha.62.18)

तदेतद् भयमुत्पन्नं त्रायस्वेह महाबल। नाशय त्वमिमानद्य तदर्थं बोधितो भवान् ॥ 62.18 ॥

tadetad bhayamutpannaṃ trāyasveha mahābala| nāśaya tvamimānadya tadarthaṃ bodhito bhavān || 62.18 ||

This, then, is the danger that has arisen -- save us from it, O mighty one! Destroy them today; it is for this very purpose that you have been awakened.'

Shloka 19 (yuddha.62.19)

सर्वक्षपितकोशं च स त्वमभ्युपपद्य माम्। त्रायस्वेमां पुरीं लङ्कां बालवृद्धावशेषिताम् ॥ 62.19 ॥

sarvakṣapitakośaṃ ca sa tvamabhyupapadya mām| trāyasvemāṃ purīṃ laṅkāṃ bālavṛddhāvaśeṣitām || 62.19 ||

-- 'My treasury utterly exhausted, come to my aid; save this city of Lanka, now left with only the old and the young.'

Shloka 20 (yuddha.62.20)

भ्रातुरर्थे महाबाहो कुरु कर्म सुदुष्करम्। मयैवं नोक्तपूर्वो हि भ्राता कश्चित् परंतप ॥ 62.20 ॥

bhrāturarthe mahābāho kuru karma suduṣkaram| mayaivaṃ noktapūrvo hi bhrātā kaścit paraṃtapa || 62.20 ||

-- 'For your brother's sake, O mighty-armed one, perform this most arduous task; never before, O scourge of foes, have I spoken thus to any brother.'

Shloka 21 (yuddha.62.21)

त्वय्यस्ति मम च स्नेहः परा सम्भावना च मे। देवासुरेषु युद्धेषु बहुशो राक्षसर्षभ ॥ 62.21 ॥

tvayyasti mama ca snehaḥ parā sambhāvanā ca me| devāsureṣu yuddheṣu bahuśo rākṣasarṣabha || 62.21 ||

-- 'I have deep affection for you, and the highest regard, O bull among rakshasas, borne of the many battles fought against gods and demons --'

Shloka 22 (yuddha.62.22)

त्वया देवाः प्रतिव्यूह्य निर्जिताश्चासुरा युधि। तदेतत् सर्वमातिष्ठ वीर्यं भीमपराक्रम ॥ 62.22 ॥

tvayā devāḥ prativyūhya nirjitāścāsurā yudhi| tadetat sarvamātiṣṭha vīryaṃ bhīmaparākrama || 62.22 ||

-- '-- you have arrayed yourself against the gods and conquered even the asuras in battle. Now summon forth all that valour, O one of terrible prowess!'

Shloka 23 (yuddha.62.23)

नहि ते सर्वभूतेषु दृश्यते सदृशो बली। कुरुष्व मे प्रियहितमेतदुत्तमं। यथाप्रियं प्रियरण बान्धवप्रिय। स्वतेजसा व्यथय सपत्नवाहिनीं। शरद्घनं पवन इवोद्यतो महान् ॥ 62.23 ॥

nahi te sarvabhūteṣu dṛśyate sadṛśo balī| kuruṣva me priyahitametaduttamaṃ| yathāpriyaṃ priyaraṇa bāndhavapriya| svatejasā vyathaya sapatnavāhinīṃ| śaradghanaṃ pavana ivodyato mahān || 62.23 ||

-- 'Among all beings none is seen equal to you in strength. Do this, the highest service, dear and good to me; O lover of battle, beloved of your kin, harry the enemy host with your own fiery might, as a great, rising wind scatters the autumn clouds.'
