That mountain-crest, pierced by a hundred arrows and its rocky mass split apart, fell down streaming sparks and flame.
Shloka 23 (yuddha.70.23)

sa vijṛmbhitamālokya harṣād devāntako balī | parigheṇābhidudrāva mārutātmajamāhave || 70.23 ||
Seeing this feat, the mighty Devantaka, filled with delight, charged with his mace at the son of the Wind-god in that battle.

As he came on, Hanuman, that elephant among monkeys, leapt up and struck him on the head with a fist like a thunderbolt.
Shloka 25 (yuddha.70.25)
śirasi prāharad vīrastadā vāyusuto balī | nādenākampayaccaiva rākṣasān sa mahākapiḥ || 70.25 ||
The mighty hero, son of the Wind, struck him upon the head, and that great monkey made the very demons tremble with his roar.
Shloka 26 (yuddha.70.26)

His skull crushed and shattered by that fist, his teeth and eyes knocked loose, his tongue hanging out, Devantaka, son of the demon king, fell lifeless to the earth in an instant.
Shloka 27 (yuddha.70.27)

When that mighty foe of the gods, foremost of demon warriors, was slain, Trishira, enraged, rained a fierce shower of sharp arrows upon Nila's chest.
Shloka 28 (yuddha.70.28)
mahodarastu saṃkruddhaḥ kuñjaraṃ parvatopamam | bhūyaḥ samadhiruhyāśu mandaraṃ raśmivāniva || 70.28 ||
Mahodara, in fury, once more swiftly mounted his mountain-like elephant, like the radiant sun mounting Mount Mandara.
Shloka 29 (yuddha.70.29)
tato bāṇamayaṃ varṣaṃ nīlasyoparyapātayat | girau varṣaṃ taḍiccakracāpavāniva toyadaḥ || 70.29 ||
Then he rained down a shower of arrows upon Nila, as a thundercloud, ringed with lightning and rainbow, pours its rain upon a mountain.
Shloka 30 (yuddha.70.30)

Then, pelted by that torrent of arrows, his body pierced through, Nila, the general of the monkey army, fell limp, overpowered by that mighty demon.
Shloka 31 (yuddha.70.31)

But Nila, regaining his senses, tore up a mountain crag along with its trees, and leaping up with tremendous force, struck Mahodara on the head with it.
Shloka 32 (yuddha.70.32)
tataḥ sa śailābhinipātabhagno mahodarastena mahādvipena | vyāmohito bhūmitale gatāsuḥ papāta vajrābhihato yathādriḥ || 70.32 ||
Then Mahodara, his body broken by the crashing mountain, along with his great elephant, sank senseless and lifeless to the ground, falling like a mountain struck by a thunderbolt.
Shloka 33 (yuddha.70.33)

Seeing his uncle slain, Trishira took up his bow, and in fury pierced Hanuman with his sharp arrows.
Shloka 34 (yuddha.70.34)
sa vāyusūnuḥ kupitaścikṣepa śikharaṃ gireḥ | triśirāstaccharaistīkṣṇairbibheda bahudhā balī || 70.34 ||
That son of the Wind, enraged, hurled a mountain-peak at him; and the mighty Trishira shattered it into many pieces with his keen arrows.
Shloka 35 (yuddha.70.35)
tad vyarthaṃ śikharaṃ dṛṣṭvā drumavarṣaṃ tadā kapiḥ | visasarja raṇe tasmin rāvaṇasya sutaṃ prati || 70.35 ||
Seeing that peak had failed, the monkey then let loose a shower of trees in that battle against the son of Ravana.
Shloka 36 (yuddha.70.36)
tamāpatantamākāśe drumavarṣaṃ pratāpavān | triśirā niśitairbāṇaiściccheda ca nanāda ca || 70.36 ||
The mighty Trishira cut to pieces that shower of trees as it came flying through the sky, with his sharp arrows, and roared aloud.
Shloka 37 (yuddha.70.37)
hanūmāṃstu samutpatya hayaṃ triśirasastadā | vidadāra nakhaiḥ kruddho nāgendraṃ mṛgarāḍiva || 70.37 ||
Then Hanuman, leaping up in fury, tore apart Trishira's horse with his claws, as a lion tears apart a great elephant.
Shloka 38 (yuddha.70.38)
atha śaktiṃ samāsādya kālarātrimivāntakaḥ | cikṣepānilaputrāya triśirā rāvaṇātmajaḥ || 70.38 ||
Then Trishira, son of Ravana, taking up a javelin like the very night of doomsday, hurled it at the son of the Wind, as Death himself might hurl it.
Shloka 39 (yuddha.70.39)
divaḥ kṣiptāmivolkāṃ tāṃ śaktiṃ kṣiptāmasaṅgatām | gṛhītvā hariśārdūlo babhañja ca nanāda ca || 70.39 ||
That tiger among monkeys seized the javelin, hurtling on unimpeded like a meteor flung from the sky, and broke it, and roared.
Shloka 40 (yuddha.70.40)
tāṃ dṛṣṭvā ghorasaṃkāśāṃ śaktiṃ bhagnāṃ hanūmatā | prahṛṣṭā vānaragaṇā vinedurjaladā yathā || 70.40 ||
Seeing that terrible javelin broken by Hanuman, the monkey hosts, overjoyed, roared like thunderclouds.
Shloka 41 (yuddha.70.41)
tataḥ khaḍgaṃ samudyamya triśirā rākṣasottamaḥ | nicakhāna tadā khaḍgaṃ vānarendrasya vakṣasi || 70.41 ||
Then that foremost of demons, Trishira, raising his sword, drove it into the chest of the lord of monkeys.
Shloka 42 (yuddha.70.42)
khaḍgaprahārābhihato hanūmān mārutātmajaḥ | ājaghāna trimūrdhānaṃ talenorasi vīryavān || 70.42 ||
Struck by that sword-blow, the mighty Hanuman, son of the Wind, struck Trishira, the three-headed one, upon the chest with the flat of his hand.
Shloka 43 (yuddha.70.43)
sa talābhihatastena srastahastāyudho bhuvi | nipapāta mahātejāstriśirāstyaktacetanaḥ || 70.43 ||
Struck by that blow, the weapon dropping from his hand, the mighty and glorious Trishira fell to the ground, bereft of his senses.
Shloka 44 (yuddha.70.44)
sa tasya patataḥ khaḍgaṃ tamācchidya mahākapiḥ | nanāda girisaṃkāśastrāsayan sarvarākṣasān || 70.44 ||
As he fell, the great monkey snatched away his sword, and, huge as a mountain, roared out, striking terror into all the demons.
Shloka 45 (yuddha.70.45)
amṛṣyamāṇastaṃ ghoṣamutpapāta niśācaraḥ | utpatya ca hanūmantaṃ tāḍayāmāsa muṣṭinā || 70.45 ||
Unable to bear that roar, the night-ranging demon leapt up, and leaping, struck Hanuman with his fist.
Shloka 46 (yuddha.70.46)
tena muṣṭiprahāreṇa saṃcukopa mahākapiḥ | kupitaśca nijagrāha kirīṭe rākṣasarṣabham || 70.46 ||
At that blow of the fist, the great monkey blazed with fury, and, enraged, seized that bull among demons by his crown.
Shloka 47 (yuddha.70.47)

With that same sharpened sword, the son of the Wind, in fury, sliced off his heads, crowned and adorned with earrings, as Indra once sliced off the heads of Tvashtri's son.
Shloka 48 (yuddha.70.48)

Those long-eyed heads of the foe of Indra, mountainous, their eyes ablaze like fire, fell to the earth, like blazing lights loosed from the sun's own path.
Shloka 49 (yuddha.70.49)

When that three-headed foe of the gods was thus slain by Hanuman of Indra-like valor, the monkeys roared aloud, the earth itself shook, and the demons fled in every direction.
Shloka 50 (yuddha.70.50)
hataṃ triśirasaṃ dṛṣṭvā tathaiva ca mahodaram | hatau prekṣya durādharṣau devāntakanarāntakau || 70.50 ||
Seeing Trishira slain, and likewise Mahodara, and beholding Devantaka and Narantaka, once unassailable, both slain --
Shloka 51 (yuddha.70.51)

bound about with plates of gold, foaming with flesh and blood, massive and resplendent, glutted with the blood of foes,
Shloka 53 (yuddha.70.53)
tejasā sampradīptāgrāṃ raktamālyavibhūṣitām | airāvatamahāpadmasārvabhaumabhayāvahām || 70.53 ||
its tip ablaze with splendor, adorned with red garlands -- a mace that struck terror even into Airavata, Mahapadma, and Sarvabhauma, the great elephants of the quarters.
Shloka 54 (yuddha.70.54)
gadāmādāya saṃkruddho matto rākṣasapuṅgavaḥ | harīn samabhidudrāva yugāntāgniriva jvalan || 70.54 ||
Taking up that mace, the enraged and arrogant bull among demons charged upon the monkeys, blazing like the fire of universal dissolution.
Shloka 55 (yuddha.70.55)
atharṣabhaḥ samutpatya vānaro rāvaṇānujam | mattānīkamupāgamya tasthau tasyāgrato balī || 70.55 ||
Then Rishabha, the mighty monkey, leaping up, went before that arrogant younger brother of Ravana and stood in his path.
Shloka 56 (yuddha.70.56)
taṃ purastāt sthitaṃ dṛṣṭvā vānaraṃ parvatopamam | ājaghānorasi kruddho gadayā vajrakalpayā || 70.56 ||
Seeing that monkey, huge as a mountain, standing before him, Mahaparshva, in fury, struck him on the chest with his thunderbolt-like mace.
Shloka 57 (yuddha.70.57)
sa tayābhihatastena gadayā vānararṣabhaḥ | bhinnavakṣāḥ samādhūtaḥ susrāva rudhiraṃ bahu || 70.57 ||
Struck by that mace, that bull among monkeys, his chest torn open, reeling, poured forth a great stream of blood.
Shloka 58 (yuddha.70.58)
sa samprāpya cirāt saṃjñāmṛṣabho vānareśvaraḥ | kruddho visphuramāṇauṣṭho mahāpārśvamudaikṣata || 70.58 ||
After a long while, Rishabha, that lord of monkeys, regained his senses, and, enraged, his lips quivering, glared at Mahaparshva.
Shloka 59 (yuddha.70.59)
sa vegavān vegavadabhyupetya taṃ rākṣasaṃ vānaravīramukhyaḥ | saṃvartya muṣṭiṃ sahasā jaghāna bāhvantare śailanikāśarūpaḥ || 70.59 ||
That swift foremost hero among monkeys, huge as a mountain, rushed upon that demon with matching speed, and, clenching his fist, struck him suddenly between the arms.
Shloka 60 (yuddha.70.60)
sa kṛttamūlaḥ sahaseva vṛkṣaḥ kṣitau papāta kṣatajokṣitāṅgaḥ | tāṃ cāsya ghorāṃ yamadaṇḍakalpāṃ gadāṃ pragṛhyāśu tadā nanāda || 70.60 ||
He fell to the ground at once, like a tree cut off at the root, his limbs drenched in blood; but Rishabha swiftly seized that demon's terrible mace, like the very staff of Death, and roared aloud.
Shloka 61 (yuddha.70.61)
muhūrtamāsīt sa gatāsukalpaḥ pratyāgatātmā sahasā surāriḥ | utpatya sandhyābhrasamānavarṇaḥ taṃ vārirājātmajamājaghāna || 70.61 ||
For a moment that foe of the gods lay as though lifeless; then, his senses suddenly returning, that demon, hued like a twilight cloud, sprang up and struck the son of the water-lord, Rishabha.
Shloka 62 (yuddha.70.62)
sa mūrcchito bhūmitale papāta muhūrtamutpatya punaḥ sasaṃjñaḥ | tāmeva tasyādrivarādrikalpāṃ gadāṃ samāvidhya jaghāna saṃkhye || 70.62 ||
He fell senseless to the ground; then after a moment, rising again with his senses restored, he whirled that same mace of the demon, massive as a great mountain, and struck him in that battle.
Shloka 63 (yuddha.70.63)
sā tasya raudrā samupetya dehaṃ raudrasya devādhvaravipraśatroḥ | bibheda vakṣaḥ kṣatajaṃ ca bhūri susrāva dhātvambha ivādrirājaḥ || 70.63 ||
That terrible mace, reaching the body of that terrible foe of the gods, of sacrifice, and of brahmins, split open his chest; and a great flow of blood poured forth, like mineral streams flowing from a mountain-king.
Shloka 64 (yuddha.70.64)
abhidudrāva vegena gadāṃ tasya mahātmanaḥ | tāṃ gṛhītvā gadāṃ bhīmāmāvidhya ca punaḥ punaḥ || 70.64 ||
He then charged with speed toward the mace of that great-souled demon; and seizing that terrible mace, whirled it again and again,
Shloka 65 (yuddha.70.65)
mattānīkaṃ mahātmā sa jaghāna raṇamūrdhani | sa svayā gadayā bhagno viśīrṇadaśanekṣaṇaḥ || 70.65 ||
and that great-souled one struck the arrogant demon at the very front of the battle; and he, shattered by his own mace, his teeth and eyes scattered,
Shloka 66 (yuddha.70.66)
nipapāta tadā matto vajrāhata ivācalaḥ | viśīrṇanayane bhūmau gatasattve gatāyuṣi | patite rākṣase tasmin vidrutaṃ rākṣasaṃ balam || 70.66 ||
fell, that arrogant one, like a mountain struck by a thunderbolt -- his eyes destroyed, lying on the ground, his strength and his life both gone. When that demon had fallen, the demon army fled in rout.
Shloka 67 (yuddha.70.67)
tasmin hate bhrātari rāvaṇasya tannairṛtānāṃ balamarṇavābham | tyaktāyudhaṃ kevalajīvitārthaṃ dudrāva bhinnārṇavasaṃnikāśam || 70.67 ||
When Ravana's brother was thus slain, that ocean-vast army of the demons, casting aside their weapons, bent only on saving their lives, fled in rout, like a shattered, storm-tossed sea.
