Vibhishana's Rally and the Fall of Indrajit's Chariot
Shloka 1 (yuddha.89.1)
युध्यमानौ ततो दृष्ट्वा प्रसक्तौ नरराक्षसौ। प्रभिन्नाविव मातङ्गौ परस्परजयैषिणौ ॥ 89.1 ॥
yudhyamānau tato dṛṣṭvā prasaktau nararākṣasau| prabhinnāviva mātaṅgau parasparajayaiṣiṇau || 89.1 ||
Then, seeing the man and the demon locked in combat, each bent on the other's defeat, like two elephants in rut,
Shloka 2 (yuddha.89.2)
तयोर्युद्धं द्रष्टुकामो वरचापधरो बली। शूरः स रावणभ्राता तस्थौ संग्राममूर्धनि ॥ 89.2 ॥
tayoryuddhaṃ draṣṭukāmo varacāpadharo balī| śūraḥ sa rāvaṇabhrātā tasthau saṃgrāmamūrdhani || 89.2 ||
that strong and valiant brother of Ravana, bow in hand, took his stand at the front of the battle, wishing to watch their fight.
Shloka 3 (yuddha.89.3)
ततो विस्फारयामास महद् धनुरवस्थितः। उत्ससर्ज च तीक्ष्णाग्रान् राक्षसेषु महाशरान् ॥ 89.3 ॥
tato visphārayāmāsa mahad dhanuravasthitaḥ| utsasarja ca tīkṣṇāgrān rākṣaseṣu mahāśarān || 89.3 ||
Standing there, he then drew his great bow to its full stretch and let fly sharp-pointed, mighty arrows upon the demons.
Shloka 4 (yuddha.89.4)
ते शराः शिखिसंस्पर्शा निपतन्तः समाहिताः। राक्षसान् द्रावयामासुर्वज्राणीव महागिरीन् ॥ 89.4 ॥
te śarāḥ śikhisaṃsparśā nipatantaḥ samāhitāḥ| rākṣasān drāvayāmāsurvajrāṇīva mahāgirīn || 89.4 ||
Those arrows, striking their mark with fiery precision as they fell, tore through the demons as thunderbolts cleave great mountains.
Shloka 5 (yuddha.89.5)
विभीषणस्यानुचरास्तेऽपि शूलासिपट्टिशैः। चिच्छिदुः समरे वीरान् राक्षसान् राक्षसोत्तमाः ॥ 89.5 ॥
vibhīṣaṇasyānucarāste'pi śūlāsipaṭṭiśaiḥ| cicchiduḥ samare vīrān rākṣasān rākṣasottamāḥ || 89.5 ||
Vibhishana's own followers too, those foremost of demons, cut down the valiant demons in battle with tridents, swords and spears.
Shloka 6 (yuddha.89.6)
राक्षसैस्तैः परिवृतः स तदा तु विभीषणः। बभौ मध्ये प्रधृष्टानां कलभानामिव द्विपः ॥ 89.6 ॥
rākṣasaistaiḥ parivṛtaḥ sa tadā tu vibhīṣaṇaḥ| babhau madhye pradhṛṣṭānāṃ kalabhānāmiva dvipaḥ || 89.6 ||
Surrounded by those demons, Vibhishana then shone like a great elephant in the midst of impetuous young tuskers.
Shloka 7 (yuddha.89.7)
ततः संचोदमानो वै हरीन् रक्षोवधप्रियान्। उवाच वचनं काले कालज्ञो रक्षसां वरः ॥ 89.7 ॥
tataḥ saṃcodamāno vai harīn rakṣovadhapriyān| uvāca vacanaṃ kāle kālajño rakṣasāṃ varaḥ || 89.7 ||
Then that foremost of demons, who knew the right moment, spoke timely words, urging on the monkeys who delighted in slaying demons.
Shloka 8 (yuddha.89.8)
एकोऽयं राक्षसेन्द्रस्य परायणमवस्थितः। एतच्छेषं बलं तस्य किं तिष्ठत हरीश्वराः ॥ 89.8 ॥
eko'yaṃ rākṣasendrasya parāyaṇamavasthitaḥ| etaccheṣaṃ balaṃ tasya kiṃ tiṣṭhata harīśvarāḥ || 89.8 ||
"O chiefs of monkeys, here alone stands the last refuge of the demon-king; this is all that remains of his force. Why do you stand idle?"
Shloka 9 (yuddha.89.9)
अस्मिंश्च निहते पापे राक्षसे रणमूर्धनि। रावणं वर्जयित्वा तु शेषमस्य बलं हतम् ॥ 89.9 ॥
asmiṃśca nihate pāpe rākṣase raṇamūrdhani| rāvaṇaṃ varjayitvā tu śeṣamasya balaṃ hatam || 89.9 ||
"Once this sinful demon is slain here at the height of battle, all that remains of Ravana's force, save Ravana himself, will be as good as destroyed."
Shloka 10 (yuddha.89.10)
प्रहस्तो निहतो वीरो निकुम्भश्च महाबलः। कुम्भकर्णश्च कुम्भश्च धूम्राक्षश्च निशाचरः ॥ 89.10 ॥
prahasto nihato vīro nikumbhaśca mahābalaḥ| kumbhakarṇaśca kumbhaśca dhūmrākṣaśca niśācaraḥ || 89.10 ||
"Prahasta the valiant has been slain, as have mighty Nikumbha, Kumbhakarna, Kumbha and the demon Dhumraksha,"
Shloka 11 (yuddha.89.11)
जम्बुमाली महामाली तीक्ष्णवेगोऽशनिप्रभः। सुप्तघ्नो यज्ञकोपश्च वज्रदंष्ट्रश्च राक्षसः ॥ 89.11 ॥
jambumālī mahāmālī tīkṣṇavego'śaniprabhaḥ| suptaghno yajñakopaśca vajradaṃṣṭraśca rākṣasaḥ || 89.11 ||
"Jambumali, Mahamali, swift Ashaniprabha, Suptaghna, Yajnakopa, and the demon Vajradamshtra,"
Shloka 12 (yuddha.89.12)
संह्रादी विकटोऽरिघ्नस्तपनो मन्द एव च। प्रघासः प्रघसश्चैव प्रजङ्घो जङ्घ एव च ॥ 89.12 ॥
saṃhrādī vikaṭo'righnastapano manda eva ca| praghāsaḥ praghasaścaiva prajaṅgho jaṅgha eva ca || 89.12 ||
"Samhradi, foe-destroying Vikata, Tapana and Manda, Praghasa and his kin, Prajangha and Jangha,"
Shloka 13 (yuddha.89.13)
अग्निकेतुश्च दुर्धर्षो रश्मिकेतुश्च वीर्यवान्। विद्युज्जिह्वो द्विजिह्वश्च सूर्यशत्रुश्च राक्षसः ॥ 89.13 ॥
agniketuśca durdharṣo raśmiketuśca vīryavān| vidyujjihvo dvijihvaśca sūryaśatruśca rākṣasaḥ || 89.13 ||
"unassailable Agniketu, valiant Rashmiketu, Vidyujjihva, Dvijihva, and the demon Suryashatru,"
Shloka 14 (yuddha.89.14)
अकम्पनः सुपार्श्वश्च चक्रमाली च राक्षसः। कम्पनः सत्त्ववन्तौ तौ देवान्तकनरान्तकौ ॥ 89.14 ॥
akampanaḥ supārśvaśca cakramālī ca rākṣasaḥ| kampanaḥ sattvavantau tau devāntakanarāntakau || 89.14 ||
"Akampana, Suparshva, the demon Chakramali, Kampana, and those two mighty ones, Devantaka and Narantaka -- all these have fallen."
Shloka 15 (yuddha.89.15)
एतान् निहत्यातिबलान् बहून् राक्षससत्तमान्। बाहुभ्यां सागरं तीर्त्वा लङ्घ्यतां गोष्पदं लघु ॥ 89.15 ॥
etān nihatyātibalān bahūn rākṣasasattamān| bāhubhyāṃ sāgaraṃ tīrtvā laṅghyatāṃ goṣpadaṃ laghu || 89.15 ||
"Having slain all these many exceedingly mighty and foremost of demons, and having swum across the ocean itself with your arms, let this puddle now be crossed with ease."
Shloka 16 (yuddha.89.16)
एतावदेव शेषं वो जेतव्यमिति वानराः। हताः सर्वे समागम्य राक्षसा बलदर्पिताः ॥ 89.16 ॥
etāvadeva śeṣaṃ vo jetavyamiti vānarāḥ| hatāḥ sarve samāgamya rākṣasā baladarpitāḥ || 89.16 ||
"O monkeys, only this much remains for you to conquer; all the other demons, proud of their strength, who gathered here, have been slain."
Shloka 17 (yuddha.89.17)
अयुक्तं निधनं कर्तुं पुत्रस्य जनितुर्मम। घृणामपास्य रामार्थे निहन्यां भ्रातुरात्मजम् ॥ 89.17 ॥
ayuktaṃ nidhanaṃ kartuṃ putrasya janiturmama| ghṛṇāmapāsya rāmārthe nihanyāṃ bhrāturātmajam || 89.17 ||
"For me, who am to him as a father, it is not fitting to bring about the death of this son; yet, setting aside all tenderness, for Rama's sake I would slay my own brother's son."
Shloka 18 (yuddha.89.18)
हन्तुकामस्य मे बाष्पं चक्षुश्चैव निरुध्यति। तमेवैष महाबाहुर्लक्ष्मणः शमयिष्यति ॥ 89.18 ॥
hantukāmasya me bāṣpaṃ cakṣuścaiva nirudhyati| tamevaiṣa mahābāhurlakṣmaṇaḥ śamayiṣyati || 89.18 ||
"Even as I wish to kill him, my eyes fill with tears and are checked. This alone, this long-armed Lakshmana, will put an end to him."
Shloka 19 (yuddha.89.19)
वानरा घ्नत सम्भूय भृत्यानस्य समीपगान्। इति तेनातियशसा राक्षसेनाभिचोदिताः ॥ 89.19 ॥
vānarā ghnata sambhūya bhṛtyānasya samīpagān| iti tenātiyaśasā rākṣasenābhicoditāḥ || 89.19 ||
"O monkeys, gather together and slay his attendants who stand near him." Thus urged on by that most illustrious demon,
Shloka 20 (yuddha.89.20)
वानरेन्द्रा जहृषिरे लाङ्गूलानि च विव्यधुः। ततस्तु कपिशार्दूलाः क्ष्वेडन्तश्च पुनः पुनः। मुमुचुर्विविधान् नादान् मेघान् दृष्ट्वेव बर्हिणः ॥ 89.20 ॥
vānarendrā jahṛṣire lāṅgūlāni ca vivyadhuḥ| tatastu kapiśārdūlāḥ kṣveḍantaśca punaḥ punaḥ| mumucurvividhān nādān meghān dṛṣṭveva barhiṇaḥ || 89.20 ||
the monkey-chiefs rejoiced and lashed their tails; and then those tigers among monkeys, roaring again and again, let loose cries of every kind, like peacocks at the sight of clouds.
Shloka 21 (yuddha.89.21)
जाम्बवानपि तैः सर्वैः स्वयूथ्यैरभिसंवृतः। तेऽश्मभिस्ताडयामासुर्नखैर्दन्तैश्च राक्षसान् ॥ 89.21 ॥
jāmbavānapi taiḥ sarvaiḥ svayūthyairabhisaṃvṛtaḥ| te'śmabhistāḍayāmāsurnakhairdantaiśca rākṣasān || 89.21 ||
Jambavan too, surrounded by all his fellow troop, struck at the demons with stones, claws and teeth.
Shloka 22 (yuddha.89.22)
निघ्नन्तमृक्षाधिपतिं राक्षसास्ते महाबलाः। परिवव्रुर्भयं त्यक्त्वा तमनेकविधायुधाः ॥ 89.22 ॥
nighnantamṛkṣādhipatiṃ rākṣasāste mahābalāḥ| parivavrurbhayaṃ tyaktvā tamanekavidhāyudhāḥ || 89.22 ||
Casting aside their fear, those mighty demons, wielding weapons of every kind, surrounded Jambavan, the lord of bears, as he wrought havoc among them.
Shloka 23 (yuddha.89.23)
शरैः परशुभिस्तीक्ष्णैः पट्टिशैर्यष्टितोमरैः। जाम्बवन्तं मृधे जघ्नुर्निघ्नन्तं राक्षसीं चमूम् ॥ 89.23 ॥
śaraiḥ paraśubhistīkṣṇaiḥ paṭṭiśairyaṣṭitomaraiḥ| jāmbavantaṃ mṛdhe jaghnurnighnantaṃ rākṣasīṃ camūm || 89.23 ||
With arrows, sharp axes, spears, clubs and javelins, they struck at Jambavan as he slaughtered the army of demons in that battle.
Shloka 24 (yuddha.89.24)
स सम्प्रहारस्तुमुलः संजज्ञे कपिरक्षसाम्। देवासुराणां क्रुद्धानां यथा भीमो महास्वनः ॥ 89.24 ॥
sa samprahārastumulaḥ saṃjajñe kapirakṣasām| devāsurāṇāṃ kruddhānāṃ yathā bhīmo mahāsvanaḥ || 89.24 ||
That tumultuous clash between the monkeys and the demons, with its terrible roar, was like the fearsome battle of enraged gods and demons.
Shloka 25 (yuddha.89.25)
हनूमानपि संक्रुद्धः सालमुत्पाट्य पर्वतात्। स लक्ष्मणं स्वयं पृष्ठादवरोप्य महामनाः ॥ 89.25 ॥
hanūmānapi saṃkruddhaḥ sālamutpāṭya parvatāt| sa lakṣmaṇaṃ svayaṃ pṛṣṭhādavaropya mahāmanāḥ || 89.25 ||
Hanuman too, filled with rage, that great-souled one, gently set Lakshmana down from his back and, tearing up a Sala tree from a mountainside,
Shloka 26 (yuddha.89.26)
रक्षसां कदनं चक्रे दुरासादः सहस्रशः। स दत्त्वा तुमुलं युद्धं पितृव्यस्येन्द्रजिद् बली ॥ 89.26 ॥
rakṣasāṃ kadanaṃ cakre durāsādaḥ sahasraśaḥ| sa dattvā tumulaṃ yuddhaṃ pitṛvyasyendrajid balī || 89.26 ||
wrought havoc among the demons by the thousand, none daring to approach him. And mighty Indrajit, having given his uncle a fierce fight, once more rushed at Lakshmana.
Shloka 27 (yuddha.89.27)
लक्ष्मणं परवीरघ्नः पुनरेवाभ्यधावत। तौ प्रयुद्धौ तदा वीरौ मृधे लक्ष्मणराक्षसौ ॥ 89.27 ॥
lakṣmaṇaṃ paravīraghnaḥ punarevābhyadhāvata| tau prayuddhau tadā vīrau mṛdhe lakṣmaṇarākṣasau || 89.27 ||
That destroyer of valiant foes charged again at Lakshmana; and then those two heroes, Lakshmana and the demon, engaged once more in fierce combat.
Shloka 28 (yuddha.89.28)
शरौघानभिवर्षन्तौ जघ्नतुस्तौ परस्परम्। अभीक्ष्णमन्तर्दधतुः शरजालैर्महाबलौ ॥ 89.28 ॥
śaraughānabhivarṣantau jaghnatustau parasparam| abhīkṣṇamantardadhatuḥ śarajālairmahābalau || 89.28 ||
Raining showers of arrows, they struck at one another; those two mighty warriors ceaselessly hid each other from view behind their nets of arrows,
Shloka 29 (yuddha.89.29)
चन्द्रादित्याविवोष्णान्ते यथा मेघैस्तरस्विनौ। नह्यादानं न संधानं धनुषो वा परिग्रहः ॥ 89.29 ॥
candrādityāvivoṣṇānte yathā meghaistarasvinau| nahyādānaṃ na saṃdhānaṃ dhanuṣo vā parigrahaḥ || 89.29 ||
as the sun and moon are veiled by clouds at the close of summer. So light and swift was the hand of each that neither the grasping of the bow --
Shloka 30 (yuddha.89.30)
न विप्रमोक्षो बाणानां न विकर्षो न विग्रहः। न मुष्टिप्रतिसंधानं न लक्ष्यप्रतिपादनम् ॥ 89.30 ॥
na vipramokṣo bāṇānāṃ na vikarṣo na vigrahaḥ| na muṣṭipratisaṃdhānaṃ na lakṣyapratipādanam || 89.30 ||
nor the drawing of the arrows, nor their fitting to the string, nor the release, nor the pulling back, nor the placing of the fist, nor the finding of the mark could be seen at all --
Shloka 31 (yuddha.89.31)
अदृश्यत तयोस्तत्र युध्यतोः पाणिलाघवात्। चापवेगप्रयुक्तैश्च बाणजालैः समन्ततः ॥ 89.31 ॥
adṛśyata tayostatra yudhyatoḥ pāṇilāghavāt| cāpavegaprayuktaiśca bāṇajālaiḥ samantataḥ || 89.31 ||
so swift was the play of their hands as they fought there; and on every side the sky was filled with the net of arrows shot with the force of their bows.
Shloka 32 (yuddha.89.32)
अन्तरिक्षेऽभिसम्पन्ने न रूपाणि चकाशिरे। लक्ष्मणो रावणिं प्राप्य रावणिश्चापि लक्ष्मणम् ॥ 89.32 ॥
antarikṣe'bhisampanne na rūpāṇi cakāśire| lakṣmaṇo rāvaṇiṃ prāpya rāvaṇiścāpi lakṣmaṇam || 89.32 ||
The sky, thus overspread, showed no visible shapes at all. Lakshmana closing with Indrajit, and Indrajit likewise with Lakshmana --
Shloka 33 (yuddha.89.33)
अव्यवस्था भवत्युग्रा ताभ्यामन्योन्यविग्रहे। ताभ्यामुभाभ्यां तरसा प्रसृष्टैर्विशिखैः शितैः ॥ 89.33 ॥
avyavasthā bhavatyugrā tābhyāmanyonyavigrahe| tābhyāmubhābhyāṃ tarasā prasṛṣṭairviśikhaiḥ śitaiḥ || 89.33 ||
as they clashed against each other, a terrible confusion arose as to which would prevail. By the sharp shafts shot forcefully by both of them --
Shloka 34 (yuddha.89.34)
निरन्तरमिवाकाशं बभूव तमसा वृतम्। तैः पतद्भिश्च बहुभिस्तयोः शरशतैः शितैः ॥ 89.34 ॥
nirantaramivākāśaṃ babhūva tamasā vṛtam| taiḥ patadbhiśca bahubhistayoḥ śaraśataiḥ śitaiḥ || 89.34 ||
the sky seemed covered as if with unbroken darkness. And as their hundreds of sharp arrows fell in multitudes,
Shloka 35 (yuddha.89.35)
दिशश्च प्रदिशश्चैव बभूवुः शरसंकुलाः। तमसा पिहितं सर्वमासीत् प्रतिभयं महत् ॥ 89.35 ॥
diśaśca pradiśaścaiva babhūvuḥ śarasaṃkulāḥ| tamasā pihitaṃ sarvamāsīt pratibhayaṃ mahat || 89.35 ||
the quarters and intermediate quarters became choked with arrows. All was shrouded in darkness, and a great terror gripped everything.
Shloka 36 (yuddha.89.36)
अस्तं गते सहस्रांशौ संवृते तमसा च वै। रुधिरौघा महानद्यः प्रावर्तन्त सहस्रशः ॥ 89.36 ॥
astaṃ gate sahasrāṃśau saṃvṛte tamasā ca vai| rudhiraughā mahānadyaḥ prāvartanta sahasraśaḥ || 89.36 ||
As if the sun itself had set and darkness had closed in on every side, great rivers of blood flowed forth in their thousands.
Shloka 37 (yuddha.89.37)
क्रव्यादा दारुणा वाग्भिश्चिक्षिपुर्भीमनिःस्वनान्। न तदानीं ववौ वायुर्न च जज्वाल पावकः ॥ 89.37 ॥
kravyādā dāruṇā vāgbhiścikṣipurbhīmaniḥsvanān| na tadānīṃ vavau vāyurna ca jajvāla pāvakaḥ || 89.37 ||
Fierce flesh-eating beasts let out dreadful, terrifying cries; the wind ceased to blow, and fire itself would not blaze.
Shloka 38 (yuddha.89.38)
स्वस्त्यस्तु लोकेभ्य इति जजल्पुस्ते महर्षयः। सम्पेतुश्चात्र संतप्ता गन्धर्वाः सह चारणैः ॥ 89.38 ॥
svastyastu lokebhya iti jajalpuste maharṣayaḥ| sampetuścātra saṃtaptā gandharvāḥ saha cāraṇaiḥ || 89.38 ||
The great sages murmured, "May it be well with all the worlds!" And the anxious Gandharvas, together with the Charanas, gathered there to watch.
Shloka 39 (yuddha.89.39)
अथ राक्षससिंहस्य कृष्णान् कनकभूषणान्। शरैश्चतुर्भिः सौमित्रिर्विव्याध चतुरो हयान् ॥ 89.39 ॥
atha rākṣasasiṃhasya kṛṣṇān kanakabhūṣaṇān| śaraiścaturbhiḥ saumitrirvivyādha caturo hayān || 89.39 ||
Then Lakshmana, with four arrows, struck the four black, gold-adorned horses of that lion among demons.
Shloka 40 (yuddha.89.40)
ततोऽपरेण भल्लेन पीतेन निशितेन च। सम्पूर्णायतमुक्तेन सुपत्रेण सुवर्चसा ॥ 89.40 ॥
tato'pareṇa bhallena pītena niśitena ca| sampūrṇāyatamuktena supatreṇa suvarcasā || 89.40 ||
Then, with another arrow -- a sharp, yellow-hued shaft, drawn fully back and released, finely feathered and splendid,
Shloka 41 (yuddha.89.41)
महेन्द्राशनिकल्पेन सूतस्य विचरिष्यतः। स तेन बाणाशनिना तलशब्दानुनादिना ॥ 89.41 ॥
mahendrāśanikalpena sūtasya vicariṣyataḥ| sa tena bāṇāśaninā talaśabdānunādinā || 89.41 ||
like Indra's own thunderbolt, ringing with the slap of his palm -- swift-handed, glorious Lakshmana
Shloka 42 (yuddha.89.42)
लाघवाद् राघवः श्रीमान् शिरः कायादपाहरत्। स यन्तरि महातेजा हते मन्दोदरीसुतः ॥ 89.42 ॥
lāghavād rāghavaḥ śrīmān śiraḥ kāyādapāharat| sa yantari mahātejā hate mandodarīsutaḥ || 89.42 ||
severed from its trunk the head of the charioteer, even as he wheeled about. And with the charioteer slain, mighty Indrajit --
Shloka 43 (yuddha.89.43)
स्वयं सारथ्यमकरोत् पुनश्च धनुरस्पृशत्। तदद्भुतमभूत् तत्र सारथ्यं पश्यतां युधि ॥ 89.43 ॥
svayaṃ sārathyamakarot punaśca dhanuraspṛśat| tadadbhutamabhūt tatra sārathyaṃ paśyatāṃ yudhi || 89.43 ||
himself took up the reins and, at the same time, kept hold of his bow -- a feat that seemed marvellous to those who watched him drive in that battle.
Shloka 44 (yuddha.89.44)
हयेषु व्यग्रहस्तं तं विव्याध निशितैः शरैः। धनुष्यथ पुनर्व्यग्रं हयेषु मुमुचे शरान् ॥ 89.44 ॥
hayeṣu vyagrahastaṃ taṃ vivyādha niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ| dhanuṣyatha punarvyagraṃ hayeṣu mumuce śarān || 89.44 ||
When his hands were busy with the horses, Lakshmana pierced him with sharp arrows; and when he turned again to his bow, Lakshmana loosed arrows at the horses instead.
Shloka 45 (yuddha.89.45)
छिद्रेषु तेषु बाणौघैर्विचरन्तमभीतवत्। अर्दयामास समरे सौमित्रिः शीघ्रकृत्तमः ॥ 89.45 ॥
chidreṣu teṣu bāṇaughairvicarantamabhītavat| ardayāmāsa samare saumitriḥ śīghrakṛttamaḥ || 89.45 ||
Ever swift in action, Lakshmana tormented him with volleys of arrows at each such opening, even as Indrajit ranged the field fearlessly.
Shloka 46 (yuddha.89.46)
निहतं सारथिं दृष्ट्वा समरे रावणात्मजः। प्रजहौ समरोद्धर्षं विषण्णः स बभूव ह ॥ 89.46 ॥
nihataṃ sārathiṃ dṛṣṭvā samare rāvaṇātmajaḥ| prajahau samaroddharṣaṃ viṣaṇṇaḥ sa babhūva ha || 89.46 ||
Seeing his charioteer slain in battle, the son of Ravana lost all zest for combat and fell into despondency.
Shloka 47 (yuddha.89.47)
विषण्णवदनं दृष्ट्वा राक्षसं हरियूथपाः। ततः परमसंहृष्टा लक्ष्मणं चाभ्यपूजयन् ॥ 89.47 ॥
viṣaṇṇavadanaṃ dṛṣṭvā rākṣasaṃ hariyūthapāḥ| tataḥ paramasaṃhṛṣṭā lakṣmaṇaṃ cābhyapūjayan || 89.47 ||
Seeing the demon's face fallen, the monkey-chiefs were filled with the greatest joy and praised Lakshmana.
Shloka 48 (yuddha.89.48)
ततः प्रमाथी रभसः शरभो गन्धमादनः। अमृष्यमाणाश्चत्वारश्चक्रुर्वेगं हरीश्वराः ॥ 89.48 ॥
tataḥ pramāthī rabhasaḥ śarabho gandhamādanaḥ| amṛṣyamāṇāścatvāraścakrurvegaṃ harīśvarāḥ || 89.48 ||
Then four monkey-chiefs -- Pramathi, Rabhasa, Sharabha and Gandhamadana -- unable to hold back any longer, sprang into swift action.
Shloka 49 (yuddha.89.49)
ते चास्य हयमुख्येषु तूर्णमुत्पत्य वानराः। चतुर्षु सुमहावीर्या निपेतुर्भीमविक्रमाः ॥ 89.49 ॥
te cāsya hayamukhyeṣu tūrṇamutpatya vānarāḥ| caturṣu sumahāvīryā nipeturbhīmavikramāḥ || 89.49 ||
Those four monkeys of tremendous might and terrible prowess leapt swiftly and came down upon his four splendid horses.
Shloka 50 (yuddha.89.50)
तेषामधिष्ठितानां तैर्वानरैः पर्वतोपमैः। मुखेभ्यो रुधिरं व्यक्तं हयानां समवर्तत ॥ 89.50 ॥
teṣāmadhiṣṭhitānāṃ tairvānaraiḥ parvatopamaiḥ| mukhebhyo rudhiraṃ vyaktaṃ hayānāṃ samavartata || 89.50 ||
Mounted upon by those monkeys, huge as mountains, blood ran visibly forth from the mouths of the horses.
Shloka 51 (yuddha.89.51)
ते हया मथिता भग्ना व्यसवो धरणीं गताः। ते निहत्य हयांस्तस्य प्रमथ्य च महारथम्। पुनरुत्पत्य वेगेन तस्थुर्लक्ष्मणपार्श्वतः ॥ 89.51 ॥
te hayā mathitā bhagnā vyasavo dharaṇīṃ gatāḥ| te nihatya hayāṃstasya pramathya ca mahāratham| punarutpatya vegena tasthurlakṣmaṇapārśvataḥ || 89.51 ||
Those horses, crushed and broken, fell lifeless to the ground; and, having slain his horses and smashed his great chariot, the monkeys leapt up again with speed and took their stand at Lakshmana's side.
Shloka 52 (yuddha.89.52)
स हताश्वादवप्लुत्य रथान्मथितसारथिः। शरवर्षेण सौमित्रिमभ्यधावत रावणिः ॥ 89.52 ॥
sa hatāśvādavaplutya rathānmathitasārathiḥ| śaravarṣeṇa saumitrimabhyadhāvata rāvaṇiḥ || 89.52 ||
Then Indrajit, his charioteer crushed and his horses slain, leapt down from his chariot and rushed at Lakshmana with a shower of arrows.
Shloka 53 (yuddha.89.53)
ततो महेन्द्रप्रतिमः स लक्ष्मणः पदातिनं तं निहतैर्हयोत्तमैः। सृजन्तमाजौ निशितान् शरोत्तमान् भृशं तदा बाणगणैर्व्यदारयत् ॥ 89.53 ॥
tato mahendrapratimaḥ sa lakṣmaṇaḥ padātinaṃ taṃ nihatairhayottamaiḥ| sṛjantamājau niśitān śarottamān bhṛśaṃ tadā bāṇagaṇairvyadārayat || 89.53 ||
Then Lakshmana, like great Indra himself, fell fiercely upon Indrajit, now on foot with his splendid horses slain, as he loosed sharp and excellent arrows in that battle, and rent him again and again with volleys of shafts.
