The Death of Indrajit

Sarga 89All sargasSarga 91

Shloka 1 (yuddha.90.1)

sa hatāśvo mahātejā bhūmau tiṣṭhan niśācaraḥ| indrajit paramakruddhaḥ samprajajvāla tejasā || 90.1 ||

Standing on the ground, his horses slain, that greatly splendoured demon Indrajit, filled with towering rage, blazed with fiery energy.

Shloka 2 (yuddha.90.2)

tau dhanvinau jighāṃsantāvanyonyamiṣubhirbhṛśam| vijayenābhiniṣkrāntau vane gajavṛṣāviva || 90.2 ||

Those two archers, bows in hand, each bent fiercely on slaying the other with arrows, were like two mighty tuskers advancing to battle in a forest for mastery.

Shloka 3 (yuddha.90.3)

nibarhayantaścānyonyaṃ te rākṣasavanaukasaḥ| bhartāraṃ na jahuryuddhe sampatantastatastataḥ || 90.3 ||

Rushing at each other from every side, those demons and forest-dwellers destroyed one another, yet none deserted his master in the battle.

Shloka 4 (yuddha.90.4)

tatastān rākṣasān sarvān harṣayan rāvaṇātmajaḥ| stunvāno harṣamāṇaśca idaṃ vacanamabravīt || 90.4 ||

Then Indrajit, cheering on all those demons, himself exultant and praising them, spoke these words:

Shloka 5 (yuddha.90.5)

tamasā bahulenemāḥ saṃsaktāḥ sarvato diśaḥ| neha vijñāyate svo vā paro vā rākṣasottamāḥ || 90.5 ||

"O foremost of demons, these quarters are wrapped on every side in thick darkness; here one cannot tell friend from foe."

Shloka 6 (yuddha.90.6)

dhṛṣṭaṃ bhavanto yudhyantu harīṇāṃ mohanāya vai| ahaṃ tu rathamāsthāya āgamiṣyāmi saṃyuge || 90.6 ||

"You fight on boldly, so as to confound the monkeys; I, for my part, shall mount another chariot and return to this battle."

Shloka 7 (yuddha.90.7)

tathā bhavantaḥ kurvantu yatheme hi vanaukasaḥ| na yudhyeyurmahātmānaḥ praviṣṭe nagaraṃ mayi || 90.7 ||

"Act in such a way that these forest-dwellers do not press the fight while I have entered the city."

Shloka 8 (yuddha.90.8)

ityuktvā rāvaṇasuto vañcayitvā vanaukasaḥ| praviveśa purīṃ laṅkāṃ rathahetoramitrahā || 90.8 ||

So saying, that destroyer of foes, the son of Ravana, deceiving the forest-dwellers, entered the city of Lanka to fetch another chariot.

Shloka 9 (yuddha.90.9)

sa rathaṃ bhūṣayitvātha ruciraṃ hemabhūṣitam| prāsāsiśarasaṃyuktaṃ yuktaṃ paramavājibhiḥ || 90.9 ||

There he had a beautiful chariot got ready, decked with gold, fitted with darts, swords and arrows, and yoked with the finest horses,

Shloka 10 (yuddha.90.10)

adhiṣṭhitaṃ hayajñena sūtenāptopadeśinā| āruroha mahātejā rāvaṇiḥ samitiṃjayaḥ || 90.10 ||

guided by a charioteer skilled in horses and trustworthy in counsel; and that greatly splendoured Indrajit, ever victorious in battle, mounted it.

Shloka 11 (yuddha.90.11)

sa rākṣasagaṇairmukhyairvṛto mandodarīsutaḥ| niryayau nagarād vīraḥ kṛtāntabalacoditaḥ || 90.11 ||

That valiant son of Mandodari, surrounded by troops of eminent demons and driven on by the force of destiny, sallied forth from the city.

Shloka 12 (yuddha.90.12)

so'bhiniṣkramya nagarādindrajit paramaujasā| abhyayājjavanairaśvairlakṣmaṇaṃ savibhīṣaṇam || 90.12 ||

Coming out of the city with his utmost strength, Indrajit, drawn by his swift horses, advanced upon Lakshmana and Vibhishana.

Shloka 13 (yuddha.90.13)

tato rathasthamālokya saumitrī rāvaṇātmajam| vānarāśca mahāvīryā rākṣasaśca vibhīṣaṇaḥ || 90.13 ||

Then, seeing the son of Ravana seated once more in a chariot, Lakshmana, the mighty monkeys, and Vibhishana the demon --

Shloka 14 (yuddha.90.14)

vismayaṃ paramaṃ jagmurlāghavāt tasya dhīmataḥ| rāvaṇiścāpi saṃkruddho raṇe vānarayūthapān || 90.14 ||

were struck with the greatest wonder at the wise Indrajit's swiftness of hand. And that enraged son of Ravana, in the battle, struck down the monkey-chiefs --

Shloka 15 (yuddha.90.15)

pātayāmāsa bāṇaughaiḥ śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ| sa maṇḍalīkṛtadhanū rāvaṇiḥ samitiṃjayaḥ || 90.15 ||

by the hundred, by the thousand, with volleys of arrows. Bending his bow into a circle, that ever-victorious Indrajit --

Shloka 16 (yuddha.90.16)

harīnabhyahanat kruddhaḥ paraṃ lāghavamāsthitaḥ| te vadhyamānā harayo nārācairbhīmavikramāḥ || 90.16 ||

with supreme agility, fell in fury upon the monkeys. Those monkeys of terrible prowess, thus slain by his steel arrows,

Shloka 17 (yuddha.90.17)

saumitriṃ śaraṇaṃ prāptāḥ prajāpatimiva prajāḥ| tataḥ samarakopena jvalito raghunandanaḥ| ciccheda kārmukaṃ tasya darśayan pāṇilāghavam || 90.17 ||

sought refuge in Lakshmana, as creatures take refuge in the Lord of Creation himself. Then Lakshmana, blazing with the fury of battle, showing the swiftness of his hand, sundered Indrajit's bow.

Shloka 18 (yuddha.90.18)

so'nyatkārmukamādāya sajyaṃ cakre tvaranniva| tadapyasya tribhirbāṇairlakṣmaṇo nirakṛntata || 90.18 ||

Hastily he seized another bow and strung it; but Lakshmana cut that one too to pieces with three arrows.

Shloka 19 (yuddha.90.19)

athainaṃ chinnadhanvānamāśīviṣaviṣopamaiḥ| vivyādhorasi saumitrī rāvaṇiṃ pañcabhiḥ śaraiḥ || 90.19 ||

Then, with his bow shattered, Lakshmana pierced Indrajit's chest with five arrows, deadly as the venom of serpents.

Shloka 20 (yuddha.90.20)

te tasya kāyaṃ nirbhidya mahākārmukaniḥsṛtāḥ| nipeturdharaṇīṃ bāṇā raktā iva mahoragāḥ || 90.20 ||

Those arrows, shot from that mighty bow, pierced through his body and fell to the ground like great red serpents.

Shloka 21 (yuddha.90.21)

sa cchinnadhanvā rudhiraṃ vaman vaktreṇa rāvaṇiḥ| jagrāha kārmukaśreṣṭhaṃ dṛḍhajyaṃ balavattaram || 90.21 ||

His bow shattered, his mouth vomiting blood, Indrajit seized yet another excellent bow, firmly strung and stronger still.

Shloka 22 (yuddha.90.22)

sa lakṣmaṇaṃ samuddiśya paraṃ lāghavamāsthitaḥ| vavarṣa śaravarṣāṇi varṣāṇīva puraṃdaraḥ || 90.22 ||

Aiming at Lakshmana and displaying supreme agility, he poured down showers of arrows, as Indra pours down the rain.

Shloka 23 (yuddha.90.23)

muktamindrajitā tattu śaravarṣamariṃdamaḥ| āvārayadasambhrānto lakṣmaṇaḥ sudurāsadam || 90.23 ||

That shower of arrows, released by Indrajit and well-nigh unbearable, Lakshmana, the tamer of foes, warded off calmly, without the least perturbation.

Shloka 24 (yuddha.90.24)

saṃdarśayāmāsa tadā rāvaṇiṃ raghunandanaḥ| asambhrānto mahātejāstadadbhutamivābhavat || 90.24 ||

Then Lakshmana, greatly splendoured and unperturbed, displayed his own prowess to Indrajit -- a sight that seemed truly wondrous.

Shloka 25 (yuddha.90.25)

tatastān rākṣasān sarvāṃstribhirekaikamāhave| avidhyat paramakruddhaḥ śīghrāstraṃ sampradarśayan| rākṣasendrasutaṃ cāpi bāṇaughaiḥ samatāḍayat || 90.25 ||

Then, filled with towering rage and displaying his swiftness with weapons, Lakshmana pierced every one of those demons in the battle with three arrows each, and struck the son of the demon-king too with volleys of arrows.

Shloka 26 (yuddha.90.26)

so'tividdho balavatā śatruṇā śatrughātinā| asaktaṃ preṣayāmāsa lakṣmaṇāya bahūn śarān || 90.26 ||

Sorely wounded by that mighty, foe-slaying enemy, Indrajit loosed a ceaseless stream of arrows at Lakshmana in return.

Shloka 27 (yuddha.90.27)

tānaprāptān śitairbāṇaiściccheda paravīrahā| sāratherasya ca raṇe rathino rathasattamaḥ || 90.27 ||

Lakshmana, the destroyer of valiant foes, cut those arrows apart with his sharp shafts before they could reach him; and, best of charioteers himself, he then struck at the head of that charioteer of Indrajit, the warrior on his chariot, in that battle --

Shloka 28 (yuddha.90.28)

śiro jahāra dharmātmā bhallenānataparvaṇā| asūtāste hayāstatra rathamūhuraviklavāḥ || 90.28 ||

with a curve-jointed Bhalla arrow, that righteous Lakshmana carried it away. Those horses, now bereft of their driver, undaunted, kept drawing the chariot on --

Shloka 29 (yuddha.90.29)

maṇḍalānyabhidhāvanti tadadbhutamivābhavat| amarṣavaśamāpannaḥ saumitrirdṛḍhavikramaḥ || 90.29 ||

running in circles -- a truly wondrous sight. Then Lakshmana of unyielding valour, overcome with indignation,

Shloka 30 (yuddha.90.30)

pratyavidhyaddhayāṃstasya śarairvitrāsayan raṇe| amarṣamāṇastatkarma rāvaṇasya suto raṇe || 90.30 ||

pierced his horses too, terrifying them with his arrows in that battle; and Ravana's son, unable to bear that deed of his in the fight,

Shloka 31 (yuddha.90.31)

vivyādha daśabhirbāṇaiḥ saumitriṃ tamamarṣaṇam| te tasya vajrapratimāḥ śarāḥ sarpaviṣopamāḥ| vilayaṃ jagmurāgatya kavacaṃ kāñcanaprabham || 90.31 ||

struck that indignant Lakshmana with ten arrows. But those shafts of his, though like thunderbolts and deadly as serpent-venom, on reaching Lakshmana's gold-gleaming armour, were shattered and came to nothing.

Shloka 32 (yuddha.90.32)

abhedyakavacaṃ matvā lakṣmaṇaṃ rāvaṇātmajaḥ| lalāṭe lakṣmaṇaṃ bāṇaiḥ supuṅkhaistribhirindrajit || 90.32 ||

Seeing that Lakshmana's armour could not be pierced, the son of Ravana, Indrajit, then struck Lakshmana in the forehead with three fine-feathered arrows,

Shloka 33 (yuddha.90.33)

avidhyat paramakruddhaḥ śīghramastraṃ pradarśayan| taiḥ pṛṣatkairlalāṭasthaiḥ śuśubhe raghunandanaḥ || 90.33 ||

filled with the utmost fury and showing his own swiftness with the missile. With those arrows planted in his forehead, Lakshmana shone all the more,

Shloka 34 (yuddha.90.34)

raṇāgre samaraślāghī triśṛṅga iva parvataḥ| sa tathāpyardito bāṇai rākṣasena tadā mṛdhe || 90.34 ||

delighting in that combat at the head of the battle, like a mountain with three peaks. Yet, tormented thus by that demon's arrows in the fray,

Shloka 35 (yuddha.90.35)

tamāśu prativivyādha lakṣmaṇaḥ pañcabhiḥ śaraiḥ| vikṛṣyendrajito yuddhe vadane śubhakuṇḍale || 90.35 ||

Lakshmana quickly drew his bow and struck him back with five arrows, straight into Indrajit's face with its lovely earrings.

Shloka 36 (yuddha.90.36)

lakṣmaṇendrajitau vīrau mahābalaśarāsanau| anyonyaṃ jaghnaturvīrau viśikhairbhīmavikramau || 90.36 ||

Lakshmana and Indrajit, those two heroes of tremendous might and mighty bows, of terrible prowess, struck at each other with their sharp shafts.

Shloka 37 (yuddha.90.37)

tataḥ śoṇitadigdhāṅgau lakṣmaṇendrajitāvubhau| raṇe tau rejaturvīrau puṣpitāviva kiṃśukau || 90.37 ||

Then, their bodies both smeared with blood, Lakshmana and Indrajit shone in that battle like two Kimshuka trees in full bloom.

Shloka 38 (yuddha.90.38)

tau parasparamabhyetya sarvagātreṣu dhanvinau| ghorairvivyadhaturbāṇaiḥ kṛtabhāvāvubhau jaye || 90.38 ||

Those two bowmen, each set upon victory, closed with one another and pierced each other's every limb with dreadful arrows.

Shloka 39 (yuddha.90.39)

tataḥ samarakopena saṃyuto rāvaṇātmajaḥ| vibhīṣaṇaṃ tribhirbāṇairvivyādha vadane śubhe || 90.39 ||

Then Indrajit, filled with the fury of battle, struck Vibhishana in his handsome face with three arrows.

Shloka 40 (yuddha.90.40)

ayomukhaistribhirvid‍dhvā rākṣasendraṃ vibhīṣaṇam| ekaikenābhivivyādha tān sarvān hariyūthapān || 90.40 ||

Having pierced Vibhishana, that lord of demons, with three iron-tipped arrows, Indrajit then struck each of the monkey-chiefs with a single arrow apiece.

Shloka 41 (yuddha.90.41)

tasmai dṛḍhataraṃ kruddho jaghāna gadayā hayān| vibhīṣaṇo mahātejā rāvaṇeḥ sa durātmanaḥ || 90.41 ||

Vibhishana, of great splendour, blazing with far greater fury at that assault, struck down with his mace the horses of that evil-souled Indrajit.

Shloka 42 (yuddha.90.42)

sa hatāśvādavaplutya rathānnihatasāratheḥ| atha śaktiṃ mahātejāḥ pitṛvyāya mumoca ha || 90.42 ||

Leaping down from his chariot, its charioteer already slain and its horses now killed, that greatly splendoured Indrajit hurled a javelin at his uncle.

Shloka 43 (yuddha.90.43)

tāmāpatantīṃ samprekṣya sumitrānandavardhanaḥ| ciccheda niśitairbāṇairdaśadhāpātayad bhuvi || 90.43 ||

Seeing that javelin hurtling towards him, Lakshmana, the joy of Sumitra, cut it into ten pieces with his sharp arrows and cast it down to the ground.

Shloka 44 (yuddha.90.44)

tasmai dṛḍhadhanuḥ kruddho hatāśvāya vibhīṣaṇaḥ| vajrasparśasamān pañca sasarjorasi mārgaṇān || 90.44 ||

Vibhishana, that strong-bowed one, in anger drove five arrows, whose blow was like the thunderbolt's, into the chest of Indrajit, his horses now dead.

Shloka 45 (yuddha.90.45)

te tasya kāyaṃ bhittvā tu rukmapuṅkhā nimittagāḥ| babhūvurlohitādigdhā raktā iva mahoragāḥ || 90.45 ||

Those golden-shafted arrows, finding their mark, pierced through his body and, stained with blood, became like great red serpents.

Shloka 46 (yuddha.90.46)

sa pitṛvyasya saṃkruddha indrajiccharamādade| uttamaṃ rakṣasāṃ madhye yamadattaṃ mahābalaḥ || 90.46 ||

Enraged at his uncle, mighty Indrajit, there amid the demons, took up an excellent arrow that Yama had once given him.

Shloka 47 (yuddha.90.47)

taṃ samīkṣya mahātejā maheṣuṃ tena saṃhitam| lakṣmaṇo'pyādade bāṇamanyad bhīmaparākramaḥ || 90.47 ||

Seeing that great arrow now fitted to his bow, Lakshmana too, greatly splendoured and terrible in prowess, took up another arrow --

Shloka 48 (yuddha.90.48)

kubereṇa svayaṃ svapne yad dattamamitātmanā| durjayaṃ durviṣahyaṃ ca sendrairapi surāsuraiḥ || 90.48 ||

one that Kubera himself, of boundless glory, had once given him in a dream, unconquerable and unbearable even for gods and demons together with Indra.

Shloka 49 (yuddha.90.49)

tayostu dhanuṣī śreṣṭhe bāhubhiḥ parighopamaiḥ| vikṛṣyamāṇe balavat krauñcāviva cukūjatuḥ || 90.49 ||

Drawn with great force by their bar-like arms, the excellent bows of both of them cried out like a pair of curlew birds.

Shloka 50 (yuddha.90.50)

tābhyāṃ tu dhanuṣi śreṣṭhe saṃhitau sāyakottamau| vikṛṣyamāṇau vīrābhyāṃ bhṛśaṃ jajvalatuḥ śriyā || 90.50 ||

Those two excellent arrows, fitted to their excellent bows and drawn back by those two heroes, blazed forth exceedingly with splendour.

Shloka 51 (yuddha.90.51)

tau bhāsayantāvākāśaṃ dhanurbhyāṃ viśikhau cyutau| mukhena mukhamāhatya saṃnipetaturojasā || 90.51 ||

Those two shafts, loosed from the bows, lighting up the sky, met head-on with tremendous force and collided in mid-air.

Shloka 52 (yuddha.90.52)

saṃnipātastayoścāsīccharayorghorarūpayoḥ| sadhūmavisphuliṅgaśca tajjo'gnirdāruṇo'bhavat || 90.52 ||

The clash of those two terrible arrows produced a fearsome fire, filled with smoke and sparks.

Shloka 53 (yuddha.90.53)

tau mahāgrahasaṃkāśāvanyonyaṃ saṃnipatya ca| saṃgrāme śatadhā yātau medinyāṃ caiva petatuḥ || 90.53 ||

Colliding with each other like two great planets, in that battle they shattered into a hundred pieces and fell to the earth.

Shloka 54 (yuddha.90.54)

śarau pratihatau dṛṣṭvā tāvubhau raṇamūrdhani| vrīḍitau jātaroṣau ca lakṣmaṇendrajitau tadā || 90.54 ||

Seeing their arrows thus checked there at the height of battle, Lakshmana and Indrajit, both of them, felt ashamed and grew still more enraged.

Shloka 55 (yuddha.90.55)

susaṃrabdhastu saumitrirastraṃ vāruṇamādade| raudraṃ mahendrajid yuddhe'pyasṛjad yudhi niṣṭhitaḥ || 90.55 ||

Lakshmana, greatly agitated, then took up the Varuna missile; and mighty Indrajit, unwavering in that battle, discharged the Rudra missile against him.

Shloka 56 (yuddha.90.56)

tena tadvihitaṃ śastraṃ vāruṇaṃ paramādbhutam| tataḥ kruddho mahātejā indrajit samitiṃjayaḥ| āgneyaṃ saṃdadhe dīptaṃ sa lokaṃ saṃkṣipanniva || 90.56 ||

By it, that wondrous Varuna weapon was struck down. Then Indrajit, greatly splendoured, ever-victorious and now enraged, as though he would consume the very world, took up the blazing Agneya missile.

Shloka 57 (yuddha.90.57)

saureṇāstreṇa tad vīro lakṣmaṇaḥ paryavārayat| astraṃ nivāritaṃ dṛṣṭvā rāvaṇiḥ krodhamūrcchitaḥ || 90.57 ||

That valiant Lakshmana warded it off with the Saura, the sun-missile. Seeing his weapon thus repelled, Indrajit was overcome with rage,

Shloka 58 (yuddha.90.58)

ādade niśitaṃ bāṇamāsuraṃ śatrudāraṇam| tasmāccāpād viniṣpeturbhāsvarāḥ kūṭamuda‍garāḥ || 90.58 ||

and took up a sharp, demonic arrow that could rend an enemy apart. From that bow there burst forth gleaming hidden hammers,

Shloka 59 (yuddha.90.59)

śūlāni ca bhuśuṇḍyaśca gadāḥ khaḍgāḥ paraśvadhāḥ| tad dṛṣṭvā lakṣmaṇaḥ saṃkhye ghoramastramathāsuram || 90.59 ||

tridents, fire-weapons, maces, swords and axes rushed forth. Seeing that terrible demonic weapon in the battle,

Shloka 60 (yuddha.90.60)

avāryaṃ sarvabhūtānāṃ sarvaśastravidāraṇam| māheśvareṇa dyutimāṃstadastraṃ pratyavārayat || 90.60 ||

irresistible to all beings and capable of tearing apart every weapon, radiant Lakshmana warded off that weapon with the Maheshvara missile.

Shloka 61 (yuddha.90.61)

tayoḥ samabhavad yuddhamadbhutaṃ romaharṣaṇam| gaganasthāni bhūtāni lakṣmaṇaṃ paryavārayan || 90.61 ||

Between the two of them there arose a marvellous battle, one that made the hair stand on end; and the beings dwelling in the sky gathered around Lakshmana.

Shloka 62 (yuddha.90.62)

bhairavābhirute bhīme yuddhe vānararakṣasām| bhūtairbahubhirākāśaṃ vismitairāvṛtaṃ babhau || 90.62 ||

In that terrible battle between the monkeys and demons, resounding with fearsome cries, the sky, thronged with countless astonished beings, shone bright.

Shloka 63 (yuddha.90.63)

ṛṣayaḥ pitaro devā gandharvagaruḍoragāḥ| śatakratuṃ puraskṛtya rarakṣurlakṣmaṇaṃ raṇe || 90.63 ||

The sages, the ancestral spirits, the gods, the Gandharvas, Garudas and serpent-folk, with Indra of the hundred sacrifices at their head, all protected Lakshmana in that battle.

Shloka 64 (yuddha.90.64)

athānyaṃ mārgaṇaśreṣṭhaṃ saṃdadhe rāghavānujaḥ| hutāśanasamasparśaṃ rāvaṇātmajadāraṇam || 90.64 ||

Then Rama's younger brother fitted to his bow another excellent shaft, its touch like fire itself, capable of rending Ravana's son asunder,

Shloka 65 (yuddha.90.65)

supatramanuvṛttāṅgaṃ suparvāṇaṃ susaṃsthitam| suvarṇavikṛtaṃ vīraḥ śarīrāntakaraṃ śaram || 90.65 ||

finely feathered, of smooth and rounded shape, well-jointed and perfectly wrought, adorned with gold, that heroic Lakshmana fitted the shaft that could end a body's life --

Shloka 66 (yuddha.90.66)

durāvāraṃ durviṣahaṃ rākṣasānāṃ bhayāvaham| āśīviṣaviṣaprakhyaṃ devasaṃghaiḥ samarcitam || 90.66 ||

hard to ward off, hard to withstand, a terror to demons, deadly as a venomous serpent's poison, and honoured by the hosts of gods --

Shloka 67 (yuddha.90.67)

yena śakro mahātejā dānavānajayat prabhuḥ| purā devāsure yuddhe vīryavān harivāhanaḥ || 90.67 ||

the very arrow by which mighty Indra, lord of the green-horsed chariot, valiant and greatly splendoured, had once conquered the Danavas in the war between gods and demons.

Shloka 68 (yuddha.90.68)

athaindramastraṃ saumitriḥ saṃyugeṣvaparājitam| śaraśreṣṭhaṃ dhanuśreṣṭhe vikarṣannidamabravīt || 90.68 ||

Then Lakshmana, fitting to his excellent bow that excellent shaft, the Aindra missile never defeated in battle, and drawing it back, spoke these words:

Shloka 69 (yuddha.90.69)

lakṣmīvā~llakṣmaṇo vākyamarthasādhakamātmanaḥ| dharmātmā satyasaṃdhaśca rāmo dāśarathiryadi| pauruṣe cāpratidvandvastadainaṃ jahi rāvaṇim || 90.69 ||

"If Rama, son of Dasharatha, is righteous of soul, true to his vows, and unrivalled in valour, then, O arrow, slay this Indrajit."

Shloka 70 (yuddha.90.70)

ityuktvā bāṇamākarṇaṃ vikṛṣya tamajihmagam| lakṣmaṇaḥ samare vīraḥ sasarjendrajitaṃ prati| aindrāstreṇa samāyujya lakṣmaṇaḥ paravīrahā || 90.70 ||

So saying, and drawing that unerring arrow back to his ear, valiant Lakshmana loosed it at Indrajit in that battle; and, charging it with the Aindra missile, Lakshmana, the destroyer of valiant foes --

Shloka 71 (yuddha.90.71)

tacchiraḥ saśirastrāṇaṃ śrīmajjvalitakuṇḍalam| pramathyendrajitaḥ kāyāt pātayāmāsa bhūtale || 90.71 ||

severed that glorious head of Indrajit, adorned with its head-guard and blazing earrings, from his body, and cast it down upon the ground.

Shloka 72 (yuddha.90.72)

tad rākṣasatanūjasya bhinnaskandhaṃ śiro mahat| tapanīyanibhaṃ bhūmau dadṛśe rudhirokṣitam || 90.72 ||

That great head of the demon's son, sundered from its shoulders, stained with blood, was seen lying on the ground, gleaming like gold.

Shloka 73 (yuddha.90.73)

hataḥ sa nipapātātha dharaṇyāṃ rāvaṇātmajaḥ| kavacī saśirastrāṇo vipraviddhaśarāsanaḥ || 90.73 ||

Slain, the son of Ravana then fell to the earth, still in his armour and head-guard, his bow flung far away.

Shloka 74 (yuddha.90.74)

cukruśuste tataḥ sarve vānarāḥ savibhīṣaṇāḥ| hṛṣyante nihate tasmin devā vṛtravadhe yathā || 90.74 ||

Then all the monkeys, together with Vibhishana, cried out in joy at his death, exulting as the gods once exulted at the slaying of Vritra.

Shloka 75 (yuddha.90.75)

athāntarikṣe devānāmṛṣīṇāṃ ca mahātmanām| jajñe'tha jayasaṃnādo gandharvāpsarasāmapi || 90.75 ||

Then, in the sky, a triumphant shout arose from the gods and the great-souled sages, and from the Gandharvas and Apsaras too.

Shloka 76 (yuddha.90.76)

patitaṃ samabhijñāya rākṣasī sā mahācamūḥ| vadhyamānā diśo bheje haribhirjitakāśibhiḥ || 90.76 ||

Realizing that he had fallen, that great army of demons, cut down by the triumphant monkeys, fled in every direction.

Shloka 77 (yuddha.90.77)

vānarairvadhyamānāste śastrāṇyutsṛjya rākṣasāḥ| laṅkāmabhimukhāḥ sasrurbhraṣṭasaṃjñāḥ pradhāvitāḥ || 90.77 ||

Struck down by the monkeys, those demons, casting away their weapons, senseless and running headlong, streamed towards Lanka.

Shloka 78 (yuddha.90.78)

dudruvurbahudhā bhītā rākṣasāḥ śataśo diśaḥ| tyaktvā praharaṇān sarve paṭṭiśāsiparaśvadhān || 90.78 ||

Frightened, those demons, by the hundred, fled in every direction, all of them abandoning their weapons -- spears, swords and axes.

Shloka 79 (yuddha.90.79)

kecillaṅkāṃ paritrastāḥ praviṣṭā vānarārditāḥ| samudre patitāḥ kecit kecit parvatamāśritāḥ || 90.79 ||

Some, terrified and harried by the monkeys, fled into Lanka; some fell into the sea; some took refuge in the mountains.

Shloka 80 (yuddha.90.80)

hatamindrajitaṃ dṛṣṭvā śayānaṃ ca raṇakṣitau| rākṣasānāṃ sahasreṣu na kaścit pratyadṛśyata || 90.80 ||

Seeing Indrajit slain, lying upon the field of battle, not one among the thousands of demons was to be seen anywhere.

Shloka 81 (yuddha.90.81)

yathāstaṃ gata āditye nāvatiṣṭhanti raśmayaḥ| tathā tasmin nipatite rākṣasāste gatā diśaḥ || 90.81 ||

As the sun's rays vanish when the sun itself has set, so too, once he had fallen, those demons scattered to every quarter.

Shloka 82 (yuddha.90.82)

śāntaraśmirivādityo nirvāṇa iva pāvakaḥ| babhūva sa mahābāhurvyapāstagatajīvitaḥ || 90.82 ||

That mighty-armed one, his life now cast away, lay like the sun with its rays grown still, like fire that has gone out.

Shloka 83 (yuddha.90.83)

praśāntapīḍābahulo vinaṣṭāriḥ praharṣavān| babhūva lokaḥ patite rākṣasendrasute tadā || 90.83 ||

When that son of the demon-king had fallen, the whole world, its many afflictions now stilled and its enemy destroyed, was filled with rejoicing.

Shloka 84 (yuddha.90.84)

harṣaṃ ca śakro bhagavān saha sarvairmaharṣibhiḥ| jagāma nihate tasmin rākṣase pāpakarmaṇi || 90.84 ||

And when that demon of sinful deeds was slain, the blessed Indra, together with all the great sages, was filled with joy.

Shloka 85 (yuddha.90.85)

ākāśe cāpi devānāṃ śuśruve dundubhisvanaḥ| nṛtyadbhirapsarobhiśca gandharvaiśca mahātmabhiḥ || 90.85 ||

In the sky too was heard the sound of the gods' kettle-drums, amid dancing Apsaras and the great-souled Gandharvas.

Shloka 86 (yuddha.90.86)

vavarṣuḥ puṣpavarṣāṇi tadadbhutamivābhavat| praśaśāma hate tasmin rākṣase krūrakarmaṇi || 90.86 ||

Showers of flowers rained down -- a truly wondrous sight; and with that cruel-deeded demon slain, all turmoil was stilled.

Shloka 87 (yuddha.90.87)

śuddhā āpo nabhaścaiva jahṛṣurdevadānavāḥ| ājagmuḥ patite tasmin sarvalokabhayāvahe || 90.87 ||

The waters and the very sky grew clear; the gods and demons rejoiced and gathered there, now that he who had terrorized all the worlds had fallen.

Shloka 88 (yuddha.90.88)

ūcuśca sahitāstuṣṭā devagandharvadānavāḥ| vijvarāḥ śāntakaluṣā brāhmaṇā vicarantviti || 90.88 ||

The gods, Gandharvas and demons, all together and well pleased, declared: "Now let the Brahmins walk about freely, their fever gone, their troubles stilled."

Shloka 89 (yuddha.90.89)

tato'bhyanandan saṃhṛṣṭāḥ samare hariyūthapāḥ| tamapratibalaṃ dṛṣṭvā hataṃ nairṛtapuṅgavam || 90.89 ||

Then the monkey-chiefs, overjoyed, seeing that unrivalled bull among demons slain, applauded Lakshmana in that battle.

Shloka 90 (yuddha.90.90)

vibhīṣaṇo hanūmāṃśca jāmbavāṃścarkṣayūthapaḥ| vijayenābhinandantastuṣṭuvuścāpi lakṣmaṇam || 90.90 ||

Vibhishana, Hanuman, and Jambavan the lord of bears, rejoicing in that victory, praised and honoured Lakshmana.

Shloka 91 (yuddha.90.91)

kṣveḍantaśca plavantaśca garjantaśca plavaṃgamāḥ| labdhalakṣā raghusutaṃ parivāryopatasthire || 90.91 ||

Shouting, leaping and roaring, the monkeys, their purpose now achieved, gathered around and stood encircling Rama's brother.

Shloka 92 (yuddha.90.92)

lāṅgūlāni pravidhyantaḥ sphoṭayantaśca vānarāḥ| lakṣmaṇo jayatītyeva vākyaṃ viśrāvayaṃstadā || 90.92 ||

Whirling and cracking their tails, the monkeys then rang out the cry, "Victory to Lakshmana!"

Shloka 93 (yuddha.90.93)

anyonyaṃ ca samāśliṣya harayo hṛṣṭamānasāḥ| cakruruccāvacaguṇā rāghavāśrayasatkathāḥ || 90.93 ||

Embracing one another, their hearts full of joy, the monkeys spoke of many kinds, praising the virtues and the deeds of Lakshmana.

Shloka 94 (yuddha.90.94)

tadasukaramathābhivīkṣya hṛṣṭāḥ priyasuhṛdo yudhi lakṣmaṇasya karma| paramamupalabhanmanaḥpraharṣaṃ vinihatamindraripuṃ niśamya devāḥ || 90.94 ||

Then the gods, beholding that arduous feat of Lakshmana, their beloved friend, in battle, and hearing that the enemy of Indra had been slain, were filled with the deepest joy of heart.
